amazing teacher, super easy class
Professor Schnyder is a nice guy, and knows the subject, but is a horrible professor. He'll say a homework is being posted x night, and release it two days later with no extension. He promises an info sheet for a midterm, but 18 hours before, posts saying that he didn't have time to make one. Syllabus wasn't out till over 1/2 of semester was over.
He is a very nice professor and he has so much patience and passion to teach both in and outside lecture, as long as you have your question ready and be willing to discuss.
Not a good teacher
One of the worst professors I've had in my studies. Doesn't really teach, dodges questions without giving straight answers, and relies on TAs to do all the grading.
- Interesting topic - Lack of organization (always promise to post homework on x day but always post few days later - He may have 12 readings for a week and the next week he is assigning only 2 readings which were already in the previous reading) - The final exam is super hard compare to what we have done during class
Professor Schnyder is really caring. Sometimes he can be a bit short with answers, but that's probably cause he's not from here. I hear he only sleeps 3 hrs a night to try to get all slides and homework up. Sometimes he's late, which is frustrating, but he always pushes back the deadline accordingly and tries to meet every request we ask of him.
This is a hard class and the teacher is not really organized
Nice person but horrible teacher, he did not even got a syllabus, the slides are posted days after the lecture (should be nice if it was before), and he promises a lot of things but never do anything. For example, he said that the solutions for the final exam will be available and the day after he said that he couldn't share it and he is busy
He is a bit rude. His Zybooks are poorly worded and are impossible to prepare for. He doesn't warn students for what to study. Also the slides and the Zybook does not use the same methods, so you never know which one to use
really poor professor. Would never give a black and white answer to a question. Literally reads off the slides for the entire class, then expects you to have an epiphany reading all of the slides over again. There were close to 500 slides to go over and the zybook's material didn't cover everything he expected to know.
I almost feel bad for my rating because he puts so much effort into his teaching materials, but unfortunately it just doesn't matter because none of it is effective. I don't doubt he's a smart guy, but he can NOT teach. He can also be condescending at times. This is my second class with him - trust me, find another prof.
I disagree with a lot of these recent ratings for 5002. Prof. Schnyder prepared me well for future courses, and I'm no math wiz (the notation is tricky). Yes the course was the hard, but grading was consistent and straightforward... I do wish there was more coding in 5002 tho (C++ preferred :)
just fine
A lot of the ratings here are unfair. Schnyder's affect is old-school central European, which means he cares for his students through the superhuman precision of everything he says and does. His slides are a work of art; he clears the path to understanding abstract principles by demonstrating their most essential variations in application.
Absolutely awful. He removes the learning element and implements a scavenge for points element. He will also humiliate students for asking questions in class.
Worst prof I've ever had. He has tenure and it is PAINFULLY apparent.
If you are reading this, you have a chance! Do not take his class trust me! You are better off with another professor! Had a lecture after a 2 hours mid-term!!!!!!!
Perhaps one of the worst classes I have ever taken in my academic career. The material is hard to begin with, but the professor himself just makes the class worse than it should be - especially for students without a math background! Didn't have an option to take another professor, but I will never take him again... thats for sure!
Professor Schnyder is a kind and quiet professor. He discovered a mathematical theorem in the 1980s, so he is both accomplished and a bit old-school. I strongly disliked math before I took his course, and I struggled during his course, but in retrospect I learned a lot. His slides are incredible and lots of students still use them as reference.
Pretty awful teacher. He seemed normal at the start, but as time goes on you learn his style carries condescending and even elitist undertones. At lecture he reads off his slides and isn't very insightful without them. His teaching method is very rushed and impatient. The final was so difficult that no one finished on time.
Prof Schnyder is a smart guy and definitely means well, but he has room to improve when teaching students without math backgrounds. Sometimes he can be a bit rude to students asking questions, and tends to make condescending remarks often in front of the whole class. His class is challenging, but not impossible. Make sure to go to office hours!
Schnyder is a good professor and lecturer, but it can be hard to ask questions in his class because you'll feel ridiculous if you get it wrong. Still, he treats everyone the same and is very invested in you doing well, so if you carefully review the lecture notes and go to office hours, you'll do well.
The Professor has a very old-school approach with some modern integrations. Tough grading, tough class and zero to minimal curving but he does really care about the content and making himself available for students. Great guy, tough class.
Do not take class with this professor. Hardest grader and not compassionate at all. Will change grades without notifying students behind their backs.
I cannot learn a single thing from this man's lectures so going to them is a waste of time. I am probably going to end up dropping the course because he has made it so impossible to succeed. Never, ever take a class with him if you have the choice.
Walter's lectures were super clear, and he was always open to answering questions in and out of class. Grading could be iffy, but regrade requests on Gradescope were completely quickly. Overall, the material itself is hard but Walter does his best to make it manageable and I really enjoyed having him as a professor.
Unnecessarily difficulty. The subject matter is interesting, but the class is not.
Schnyder knows the material of the course very well and mostly is able to convey that material . You will have to reread stuff tho. Biggest issue with this class is the grading scale (94+ for an A, 84+ for a B with not +/-), the **horrible** shift in difficulty for the last 1/3 of the course, and unhelp TAs. Easily the hardest material I've had
The course is content-heavy, moves fast, and isn't always the most interesting, but Schnyder made it engaging and he always provided tons of in-class examples that were actually useful for the homework. He is respectful towards students, open and honest about grading, and he is also quite active on Piazza.
This guy just cannot teach. Seems like a nice guy, but shows no interest in helping students. Very condescending during office hours
Walter Schnyder is very good at explain the concepts in class. Do the work and listen to his lectures and you will do great in his class!
Professor Schnyder is not a great professor, his lectures were very boring, and moved too fast. Occasionally very condescending. Multiple participation quizzes every day, so you have to show up to class. The exams are really hard and impossible to finish on time.
The homeworks were brutally difficult and time consuming for me. The slides he publishes are very compact, you will have great difficulty understanding them without the lecture. He has a kind demeanor but I think in reality is quite harsh. Don't take this class online, being alone with nobody to reach out to for help is dire. Office hours useless.
The most complicated and hard to follow I ever had to take, the issue was with less with the material but with most of the hard gradings and lack of interest of the professor to consider different point of view except his own. Had to drop the class in order to safe my other ones, avoid at all cost!
Horrendous. He makes hws and exams incredibly difficult. Not to mention how time consuming they are. You also won't have enough time to finish the exams & he always finds a way to blame the students for it. Oh and if you plan to ChatGPT, watch out because he OSSCR'd a bunch of students. To make matters worse, his grading is 74 = C, 84 = B, 94 = A
Never went to class once. There are participation quizzes for attendance but optional gradescope quizzes to make up each credit and the lectures are on zoom and recorded. A pretty difficult class, much more difficult than if you were to take it with any other professor. The exams are fine content wise, just not in the amount of time you're given
This is basically a boring math theory class that's not that hard but imagine taking a boring math class online and try to pay attention to that(Hint it's impossible). That would all be fine for me as I have learned a lot but the actual content is COMPLETELY useless and grading is brutal.
I liked the class but grading is very hard. I did better than the median and got a B- and very very few kids got an A(sub 5%). Lectures are good and he is active online. Just hard to recommend because why take this class, do decent in relation to your peers, and get a B or B- when you could take a different professor and get a way better grade.
I really enjoyed this class and thought Walter was a great professor. I thought it would be hard to stay focused in a online class but I found it very easy and fun to pay attention and take notes. Only Con is it is veryyyyy hard, but if you work hard you should get a decent grade.
My face after every lecture :(
The hws are impossible. Gives you 2 days to do 18 really hard questions. will not recommend.
There are very few teachers you meet that are so passionate about education and their students that they make a lifelong impact on the ambitious youth. Even fewer however, are teachers who give such little regard to that theme that they eliminate any and all fire within a student to pursue a field. He is the latter. Do yourself a favor, skip him.
By far the worst professor I have ever experienced at Northeastern. Please avoid him at all costs. I taught myself everything. Save your GPA and move on to a different prof.
This prof gives you 100 minutes for 13 questions. Out of the 13 questions each have at least 2-3 sub questions. And for each of the subquestions you are expected to submit a pdf for it. That leaves you with about 2 minutes max for solve each questions and 30 secs max for you to convert it to a pdf. :) Just wonderful.
This professor puts more of an effort in trying to fail you instead of actually teaching something. He basically threatens to fail students even if you work with them. He will flag you for plagiarism and doesn't give enough time to complete assignments. And the exams are actually ridiculously difficult. Avoid at all costs
The absolute worst teacher I've had throughout my entire life of education. I've never met somebody who is so dedicated to seeing his students fail. His exams are complete hell and he publishes back to back homeworks that will have you working 50+ hours a week. Please avoid.
The homework is time-consuming, as many have claimed. Tests aren't realistic under time conditions imo but that's fine. You should expect this to lower your gpa (which is fine!) a little but you can recover with other courses over undergrad. Do not recommend taking it over summer 1 or 2. The class covers a semester's content over 6 weeks (not fun).
This prof ruined my first half of the summer. He has no compassion towards student's and wants to make them fail. He busts ppl for AI or plagarism to make an excuse to the department for why everyone is failing the class. Ngl, I rather get drafted then to sit down and do his homework's. And please, don't even get me started on the exams.
Nightmare fuel..... Hes reducing peoples learning opportunities trying to hold people accountable. His response to AI use in the class is to make the course more difficult and pick genuinely hardproblems that AI happens to struggle just as much as students do. This man is ruining the first half of my summer for nooooo reason. Find another class.
AVOID AT ALL COST!!!! IMPOSSIBLE CLASS
The homeworks take so long to complete. I understand this is a summer class, but this is insane. The midterm exam was basically impossible to complete under the given timeframe.
Awful experience
I chose this class because people said it was hard—hoping that 'hard' would mean that I would learn more. Yeah no, this professor just makes it unnecessarily difficult. You can understand the content decently well and end up with a horrible grade. HW takes 20 hours, and exams are impossible to finish. Avoid this professor at all cost.
The worst professor I've ever had in my four years at Northeastern. He is genuinely trying to fail everyone. We have a final exam in two days, and he still hasn't finished grading our midterm. I have no idea where my grade currently stands, and like many others said, the homework takes a long time, and the exams are impossible to finish in time.
It feels as if this professor is trying to fail everyone. The HWs are very long and exams so hard, you can't even finish on time. AVOID!!!
One of the worst classes at NEU. Overwhelming HW, impossible exams, and grading delays (no midterm grade even 1 day before final). The prof said no curve due to alleged AI use—punishing everyone, even honest students. Very demoralizing. TAs were also condescending. Avoid if you want fair grading or support.
I used to think he was just one of those 'hard yet caring' professors who give you challenges but genuinely want you to succeed. But no, I was wrong. he really does like seeing students fail. The homework and midterm averages will be 50–60 at best. Even worse, there's no curve (in fact, there might even be a downward curve).
Every other recent review from this summer is accurate. Homework is extremely long and tedious (2x a week for some weeks), the class rushes through content, professor is very condescending, professor will find any excuse to not give students any chances, exam is impossible to complete within the timeframe. Do this class with another professor.
My life used to be really great before taking this course. I am a shell of a human now. I haven't touched grass in so long because I spend a ridiculous amount of time on this course. I don't even know if my blood sweat and tears are paying off because he hasn't released midterm grades even though our final is tomorrow. Only pain, no gain.
No grades posted on Canvas all term, not even the midterm, and the final is tomorrow. We have no idea how we're doing. Homework is long, graded harshly, and unclear. Lectures don't teach the material, they just rush through assignments. Midterm process was flawed. Poorly run class.
WHAT WAS THIS???!!! I REGRET TAKING THIS OH MY GOD. I need therapy because of this class/professor.
Yikes. This course is difficult, and the constraints of a summer term make it harder, but Schnyder had absolutely no response to this, seeming to blame poor student performance on AI and cheating alone. The exam took too long to finish, and each question was similar in difficulty to the homework, which was also challenging. Avoid if at all possible
send help :(
I'm just mad right now. We should all complain to Khoury.
The worst decision made in my life.
We should report this to Khoury OMG he is trying to fail 90% of the class. Tomorrow is final while there's still a hw due and a quiz due tonight. no midterm score yet. no curve and according to his syllabus there will be no A- and B+ etc. Pls we don't know what to do at this point!
This was the worst class I've ever taken my entire life. I've had professors that have been considered strict or harsh but even then I've been able to get along with them and they were reasonable at the very least, Walter does not care if the entire class fails and will punish the entire class for AI when it's impossible to finish anything on time.
If this many people are complaining in two days you know there is a serious issue. Is it possible to bring this up to Khoury and file a complaint? It's ridiculous because I have tried everything like going to OH, asking questions on Piazza, taking notes on the slides, and reading the textbook. PLEASE can someone file a complaint or smthn :(
I'm going to file a complaint / email the dean about this. I encourage all students to do this too so they take us seriously!
I think Prof. Schnyder is a good guy, but in truth this is the worst class I've ever taken at NEU. The Final is tomorrow and we still don't have midterm grades back. The HW's are ridiculously long and difficult. The lectures are of no help. He is so smart that he cannot articulate things in a way others understand. Don't take this class with him!
Unrealistic deadlines and poor planning. Our final is tomorrow, but we don't even have midterm grades. First it was AI concerns, then he said he lost a TA and had to regrade everything, then blamed AI again. Most grades aren't on Canvas, no one knows where they stand. He even taught new material today and it's on the final. :(
I'll be reporting Walter to the Dean of Khoury and higher-ups at Northeastern. He should not be employed by the University.
I REGRET TAKING THIS CLASS WITH HIM SO MUCH OMG
A midterm median of 50 ish percent and he blame student for using the AI to pull the median down. Seriously, this should be brought to Khoury.
His reasoning when a concern is voiced: - Late grades: too many students used AI, we had to file those (yet on the day of the final, he has yet to contact the students) - half of the class failed (81% high): AI users brought the median down - Not enough exam time: you used AI and spent too long on an easy question blames AI for all concerns
Have you ever seen 20+ one-star reviews in ONE DAY? This is genuinely the worst-run class NEU offers. This guy indiscriminately rails EVERYONE. AI? OSCCR. No AI? Probably didn't do very well on your assignment then, cause it WASN'T POSSIBLE. Is he tenured or something? How else do you end up with a class average of probably 60, and remain employed?
The students in this class really should all united and all send a message to khoury. This just isn't how things should go. When everyone is trying hard and at best get a C- at the end.
SHOULD NOT BE EMPLOYED BY NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
10 super hard question(if you include the subquestions there will be more than 30) in 100 min final . not funny. not at all.
The condensed structure and homework made it difficult to grasp content. I'm looking to withdraw then retake over upcoming semester for more even pacing. Do not recommend taking it over summer 1. The pacing is unmanageable without prior experience. Strong recommendation to pre-study before the course, regardless of semester or summer class.
Schnyder is very kind to everyone and everything, except for math. Students are doing math in his class unfortunately, so he seems not kind at all... His lectures are very good, but there are serious issues with the overall organization. (PS I am not taking this class, but a witness of this crazy 3800 session over summer).
He doesn't care. He makes false promises on grading deadlines that are never met. He would say 'yes we can post the grades by x day' and then proceed to say 'No.' when asked about it later. Take this class if you enjoy feeling trapped. He's also planning to report students and will fail them weeks after the course is over; it's never truly over.
Today is when grades are due and no one knows their grade. He said he post on canvas beforehand and didn't. He also didn't let us know our overall grade before the W decline. This violates the academic right: "Students have the right to receive grades and feedback in a timely manner, particularly in the case of sequentially related assignments"
You can tell how terrible this professor is from the rest of the comments. Here are the numbers: Summer 1 2025 exam stats: Final Statistics: Minimum: 50.0 Maximum: 93.0 Mean: 71.83 Median: 70.0 Standard Deviation: 11.1 Midterm Statistics: Minimum: 26.0 Maximum: 88.0 Mean: 64.38 Median: 65.0 = 65% Standard Deviation: 13.77
He doesn't give feedback in a reasonable time and tries to my the class and your life as difficult as possible
Worst professor of my entire life. He blames everything on chatGPT instead of taking accountability for his own mistakes. More than half of the class failed and he blamed it on AI.The highest score on the exam was an 83, and he still blamed it on AI
