Very funny prof. He makes this boring course enjoyable by his amusing stories and funnny movies. You'll enjoy the class. Just take notes and skim the reading and you'll do fine.
Pretty Dull class. Lots of movies. Taking notes on his lectures is big because he doesn't talk about the book; however, He'd be a much better professor if he showed up to class on time more regularly...
A lot of movies, note taking is very important in his class because non of that stuff is in the text book. His lectures are pretty dull and tests are hard
He has some funny stories and lectures aren't too boring, but the tests are sort of difficult and you have to make sure you read the book. Also, the test isn't just on the book...he also talks about stuff in lectures that you have to remember for the test

Go to the lectures! He talks about weird stuff, not in the book, that will be on the tests. Also You have to study, he doesn't go over eveything in class so you have to read the text book. Also if he thinks attendance is low he may give extra credit to the people who are there!
Difficult to discern what is important in his lectures and what is just him telling another random story. However if you attend the class there are numerous extra credit oppurtunities plus his stories are often pretty entertaining.
Uncle warren is the best...You'd be crazy not to take him..his lectures are random and sometimes even interesting. Definitley go to class though, exams are relatively easy, skim through notes, read the book, and go to recitation and the class will be easy
Not a bad professor, although it is a bit hard to follow his lectures. Can be funny at times.
He's somewhat boring and often goes off on tangents. (Occasionally the stories are funny, though.) I only did really well because I had a good TA. Also, going to lecture is important, since there are quite a few questions on his test from lectures.
He's really intelligent and has a lot of experience.
i have no idea what he's saying 75% of the time. you really have to focus and pay attention to catch what he's trying to teach you.

Not bad - go to lectures, a lot of the test questions are based on what he says in class and he also gives lots of extra credit. lectures can be confusing - hard to distinguish between a story and test questions. also, a good TA could greatly help out
He goes off on tangents constantly. doesn't really have a lesson plan so it makes it INCREDIBLY hard to follow along. I have left many lectures having not learned anything relavent for the tests. Tests are somewhat easy compared to other world civ tests. ALL MULTIPLE CHOICE!!!Also there is only one book to read. Definitally much better than others
Class is fairly easy (test isn't too bad, and study sheet was provided), but lectures tend to be fairly boring. Though I guess if you like archaeology it would be pretty interesting.
I think he is pretty funny. He goes off on tangents a lot, but some of his stories are enjoyable. I don't know what to really say about the class. eh...
Uncle warren is the man. Go to lectures and skim the reading and you will be fine. Gives out extra-credit at lectures. Only problem is your grade is based on a midterm, final, and thesis paper and thats it
He says the tests are based on general concepts when actually they're very specific knowledge, although it can be bullshat with ease. you do need to attend lecture as it is about 50% of the test. over all pretty good but not great
clearly more interested in his research than his teaching, he often simply discusses what he is currently working on in mexico rather than the class material. as a person i think he is great however, his stories can be fairly interesting and he has good sense of humor. unfortunatley, this will not get you anywhere on the test.
barbour is the man. he always lectures on his research, rather than the book material, but he keeps the lectures interesting. 75% of the test is based on lecture, but if you attend and take good notes, u will ace the tests. the tests are easy and the paper is not bad. i read the conclusions of each chapter, went to class and ended up with an A.
Dr. Barbour is a good professor to have. He often throws in jokes to enhance lectures. However, at least 50% of the tests (2 of them) are based on lecture so you have to go to class. Also, there's a paper but it's not too bad. I managed a B
Pretty interesting class. Lectures might be hard to stay awake in if you are not the least bit interested in history. I got an A in this class and had an awesome TA but it wouldn't have been too hard otherwise. He gives lots of extra credit. It is an easy A anyway you look at it, and the paper at the end is easy to BS. Ill take him again in UGC112.
not a bad class, your expected to read the book but all you need to know are the key terms. lectures are interesting and he gives a lot of extra credit
Barbour is very straightforward and easy going. You show up to class, listen to him talk about whatever is on his mind and he relates normal things to history. The course only involves a midterm, final exam, research paper, and recitation. Even the recitations are pretty easy. If you read the book and pay attention in lecture you can get an easy B.
he was funny at times...can get kinda boring. u dont actually need to read the book or listen as long as u have mia jorgensen as ur TA. she is the best TA ever and if u want and A in barbours class u need to have MIA. she holds review sessions before both exams and is soo helpful and very nice.
I can see why people would like him, b/c he's very funny and loves to tell stories during lecture. However, i found the class endlessly boring (but i hate history), and it is SO incredibly difficult to take notes from his lecture, b/c he'll put the most random things on tests. oh well, he was ok...
This was just being tested on reading the book and his views on stuff. His views took over. Class was ok..really long notes...hard to understand. Goes really fast. Use to teaching Grad Students so isn't very patient. I got a "b-" still but with a lot of work. 10 page paper at the end that was super hard!
As long as you get Mia for recitation, you're all set. Go to her review before tests and she tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. The only work I did all year was the 10page paper at the end, which I half bs-ed and still did well on. Theres only 2 fairly easy exams, all multiple choice, and there's usually a curve.
he is soooo boring. he tries to be funny, and it gets a couple laughs, but overall he just puts people to sleep. there is a 10-15 page paper which is a ****, and he does take attendance sometimes. it's not that hard to get a B, but i would say an A- or an A is pushing it.
Maybe hes good for 100 level UGC classes, but don't take him in the Anthro dept. Our grade was based on two assignments, both due May 9th. Lectures border on torture and you'll regret going because they won't help at all in the class. You know he'd rather be digging somwhere in Mexico than teaching you. Don't take his classes. Just not worth it.
awesome!!! he is so hillarious with his stories that come up from nowhere! He keeps ur attention. If u get a good ta like mia , then u will be prepared for the exam .
Barbour wasn't that bad of a professor but if you have MIA as your TA then you're set. and it really isn't hard to get an A- or an A if you have Mia.
Plan on doing all learning on your own. fairly pointless lectures. tells random stories instead of giving information to study for exams. we once watched a video about Elvis in class. ridiculous.
This class is not only disinteresting, it is ridiculously unfsair. Though Professor Barbour is an interesting man, he doesn't give a wide enough basis for studying. Lectures are interesting, but completely unrelated to the textbook. One of the T.A.'s, LYNNE SANDUSKY, is a complete **** and thinks it's ok to take attendance in an enormous lecture.
this class is redic, it depends 100% on which TA you have. if you have brianna, you should do well... other ta's like jack and lynn will make your life hell. tests are on 5 quotes and an essay. GOOD TA = A, BAD TA = C.... i wouldn't recommend this class
GREAT TEACHER! He makes attendance mandatory by having random att.checks but he make it interesting so go to class. He tells a lot of stories about his personal experience and these are on the midterm and final. We had equal txtbk/lect. ?'s said isnt using book FALL 2007 last I knew. resrch paper not hard u choose topic in history from time period.
He might be crazy. His lectures are all over the place. His stories are pretty funny though. The work is not hard and the tests are easy if you study at all.
Barbour is the man hands down. He keeps your attention and loves his stories, i'm doing great in the class and i'm no where near a history buff so he must be doing something right for my fragile mind.
I went to ONE lecture... ONE, didnt take either of the tests, he gave me an A.
The prof keeps telling these unnecessary stories that are completely unrelated to the readings. Some questions on the quiz are actually about his personal life in the stories he tells. The entire class, and it's work, is based entirely around the book. I had Lynn as my TA, and she was alright. The 10-page paper is really bad, though.
easy class lecture is not important at all if you get Mia as a TA you will get an A
if all you do is use the review sheets for the two exams and write the ten page paper, you will get a good grade. attendance is taken on random class days.
Have to read textbook because lectures do not cover textbook, only what he wants to talk about. 10-page paper is an annoyance, but ok.
probably one of the easiest classes i've ever been involved in. plays movies in class. exams have personal questions about him incorporated. 10 page paper is about the history of what you want to be when you get older. you get like 2 months to write it. highly recommended.
Barbour rocks! He keeps my attenion during lectures and his stories r funny and they keep class interesting! the videos can sometimes be dull, but i really enjoyed the Elvis and Spin video. the monty pylon documentaries are tough tho because it's hard to understand his accent. Anyways, he is an excellent professor, i would recommend him to neone
you can tell that he never has his lectures prepared, and dont expect him to talk about anything really relevant to what youre supposed to learn during lecture. thats what the recitation is for, so its a good idea to go to that. he assigns a 10 page research paper that sucked and took up too much time. easy exams and small quizzes during recitation
I have him for world civ 2, if you just show up and listen to him the tests are so ridiculously easy its not even funny. There are basically three completely wrong answers and one obviously right answer. He likes to tell stories so he is pretty fun to listen to in lecture.
Very very interesting guy, you will learn a lot of interesting things you never knew before. Textbook and attendance are required as well as a 10 page term paper. Not a hard class if you just go to class and read the text book a little. I recommend him, he is a great professor
Very interesting man. Very fun lectures Class is generally easy, however you will fail tests if you dont take notes in lecture. or listen well. Make sure you get Mia or Kate as TA because they help ALOT with test prep time. Do'nt get Barbour as TA because as interesting as his many stories are that he tells in res they dont help you pass the test!!
Dr. Barbour seems like a great person in general but unless you have a real knowledge of history, you'll have a hard time following him. He knows a lot about what he's talking about but he seems to expect you to as well. Lectures are never related to what's going on in the book or recitation. TAs are ok but not the best.
Nice guy, knows his stuff and a lot of it, but when it comes to actually teaching it he just rambles about random stuff and you never know whats going on. DO NOT get Lynne as your TA-shes just terrible
lecture is 60% of grade: clickr attendance/in class quizzes which are random/kill your grade if you don'tgo to class in the first place &if you don't understand what he's SLURS to begin with, even if you are inclass. is nice but secretly selfabsorbed- cares about how how many students want to attend his comedy show therfore lowattendce=class quiz
Good guy and has lots of experience and DEFINITELY knows what he's talking about, the thing is, he's pretty much a scatterbrain. Basically a nutty professor type guy.
i can't stand his class. i'm desperately trying to study for the final but it is impossible. no one ever takes notes in lecture because he is impossible to understand. but lectures are mandatory and he does attendance at the end with clickers (which was a waste of $50) if you can, get into a class with a different professor
The 10pg research paper was tricky bc you can't use any internet sites or encyc's but I still got a 93%. Atten. to lecture and rec. is a MUST-it goes toward your grade. He doesn't record his lecture so you need to take notes. Can't speak for the tests bc we didnt have tests just a final and it was cancelled. Also he has really interesting stories.
Must read the book. If you don't you'll have no idea what's going on, especially in rec. Also must take notes in lecture. There are online quizzes but they're pretty easy and TA's assign homwork (usually 4 essays for the whole sem). TA's are pretty good and he keeps the same ones (for as long as possible).
Like others said, the TAs Kate and Josh are awesome, but Lynn is crazed with pseudo-power. Barbour is a nice guy, but rambles on about things and never uses the textbook-which is only used for the ridiculously hard quizzes. The lectures can range from mildly interesting to EXTREMELY boring. Do NOT take this class unless you have to.
Hes really boring and only cares about his studies as a grad student. And honestly, nobody cares that he was the first African American to get a PhD in Anthropology.
Barbour is the man. Had him for UGC 111 and 112. There are online quizzes that are pretty easy and 1st semester after first 5 you could redo them. UGC 112 he gave 20 bonus points to make up for quizzes. TAs Josh and Kate are great TA's Lynn should be avoided. Easy class. Some random attendance. I got a 100 on both paper and the tests so its easy.
He talks a lot about seemingly irrelavant things, so write down EVERYTHING he says. He has awesome TA's and they don't give a lot of work. You HAVE to go to lecture, they take attendence. The main grades are your REC grade, term paper, mid term and final, but it's easy to get an A or B if you write down EVERYTHING he says and do all of the work.
This professor is the WORST professor I have ever met so far... He talks about something useless... His teaching is very unorganized, unhelpful, and his exam is difficult. Just don't take this prof's class.
He was all over the place, but he is a very interesting and unique professor.
His tests are hard, but his antics are amusing. He isn't the easiest, write down everything he says. I'm taking him again next semester.
Very unorganized professor. I enjoyed his stories but do not enjoy the fact that his class is standardized tests based but his lectures do not help studying for the test. I wouldn't recommend taking this professor. Not that hard to get an A as long as you go to the TA and ask about what's gonna be on the test since the lectures do nothing to help
One of the only World Civ teachers that assigns a 10 page paper. Steer clear honestly.
Lectures are absolutely pointless. 10 page paper, I don't like him and his voice is so high I hardly understand what he's saying/talking about.
his course was honestly a waste of my time. he's the sweetest guy you could ever meet but i had to drop his class because i was getting nothing accomplished. DON;T take his course!
This was one the easiest and stress-free classes I had all semester. His lectures are torturous but his class is an easy A. TA's are awesome and are very helpful. Make sure you do well in recitation. His tests are easy. Don't procrastinate on the term paper though...I learned that the hard way. But anyway, it's really an easy A.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO WRITE A TEN PAGE ESSAY. This teacher is the only world civ teacher that assigns a term paper. It is torture. If you get him its an easy A but who wants to write ten pages during thanksgiving break?
Do not take his anthropology classes. First he started the semester with no syllabus.. then he did not assign a midterm, or he forgot to.. Then he assigned a final 15-25 page paper with ZERO guidelines/expectations. I seriously do not not how he is still teaching. I learned nothing. He threw a party at his house with underage drinking. That was fun
Not hard class at all only if you do well in recitation class. Midterm and final are totally up to the study guide given from TAs and the vocabs from textbook. Its sort of annoying to write 10 page termpaper; but you can get an A with such little effort.
This class was wonderful. Not only did we learn the material from a first hand recollection of seeing the actual places, but we learned about the methods and problems that they faced during the digs. The paper was freeform where we able to write about what we were interested within the topic with typical guidelines. Great professor. Brilliant even.
Very informative class especially for those with an interest/looking to work in Mesomerican archaeology, virtually a life time of experiences in the field covered. Very nice professor, very accommodating though a bit hard to follow at times.
Such a BORING class. But! I must say, Warren Barbour is super intelligent and there were some points when his lectures were not worth sleeping through. Come to class (they do attendance randomly which can really help your grade). If you have a good TA, the study guide is practically GIVEN to you. Textbook is not needed. Simple A.
He is boring many times. But,his class is not based off of a text book.It is based off of the slideshows(posted online) which are usually 10 times more interesting.Easy tests and quizzes. One presentation which is really not difficult to do in a group of 4-5.One research paper in which you can choose/make up your own topic. He brings artifacts in too.
He was very nice and interesting but he went off topic a lot and he gets distracted easily. He was kind of hard to hear and understand too. Make sure you really pay attention in class because the exams are mostly on his lectures. Be prepared to write a 10 page paper but the good thing is that you can choose your topic.
Dr. Barbour is a great person. Very nice and funny at times. Lectures can be boring and seem random, and attendance is mandatory (taken with clickers). Our only grades were two tests, a 10 page paper which was very free and flexible, attendance, and recitation. Tests were about two thirds lecture (study guide) and one third text vocab. Decent prof.
Bad professor. hard to understand. very random.
It is extremely hard to hear Dr. Barbour in the lecture. No need to take notes. Just go to the recitation and his TA will teach you everything you need to know. His tests are easy as long as you go to the recitation. Good professor.
Okay guy, very hard to understand. Course had very little content, mostly just talk about the world situation
Extremely boring. When I say extremely, I mean it. He went on tangents and never covered the material; his TAs ended up doing it for him during recitation. He treats lecture like he's a prison guard - if you talk, you get called out, immediately. He commands his TAs to also be on the look out for people doing other work...like really? STAY AWAY!
yes, he my be very boring in lecture, and attendance is taken through clickers. However, he gives the TAs a study guide of EXACTLY what is going to be in the test. class is based off of 2 non cumulative tests on terms from the book and study guide, and a 10-page paper due before break that is based on any topic in history. boring but easy class!
BORING and weird dude. Class is really easy, although the 10 page paper for a class like this is ridiculous. Wouldn't recommend.
Good teacher, just need to go to class and pay attention.
Attendance is taken by clickers so you have to come to lecture. Extremely little amount of content lectures are really just him rambling and going on tangents for 50 minutes. Taking notes during lecture is close to impossible but read through the textbook for what you need to know. He talks very softly and shakily so it''s easy to fall asleep.
Didn't like that he took attendance, and also that his lectures seemed pretty pointless. He's a nice guy though and has great TA's.
Easy class, but really boring
Probably the most boring teacher I've ever had. Seriously such a joke. I did other homework in EVERY single lecture, never listened once. Go to a TA review session before each exam then study the sheet they have you fill out for an hour and youll get an easy A. Hated the class and the 10 pg paper but I'm taking Barbour next semester for another A
He may not be a great professor because he is pretty boring, but I never took notes and did't pay attention whatsoever. He always gives a review sheet which is EXACTLY what is on the test. Study the review sheet and you will get an A. Plus the quizzes in recitation are on vocabulary. Very simple.
Barbour was boring, hard to listen to, tests were very easy and straight forward. I found myself falling asleep many times in his class, slides and lectures were irrelevant - but show up to class as attendance is taken through clickers. The class is an easy A - Erin Mcdonald, best TA. 10 Page term paper to write, dont push it off and youll be fine
His lectures are very long, boring with the lights dim: you fall asleep easily. Barbour has a passion for history & tries to make jokes but needs to retire. He assigns a 10 page paper with alot of topics to choose from. My grade was heavily based on my recitation. GET T.A. MATT. Matt is why i passed, i went to office hours for his weekly quizzes.
Recitation and Leture Attendance is key!!!! Recitation greatly determines what grade you will receive. Easy credit for UGC and Elective.
Just an overall baller and pretty funny guy or at least i think so, lectures are mandatory attendance but the test are super easy so as long as you can read or have a memory greater than that of a goldfish you are in the green.
Really boring professor even though he tries to be funny. If it weren't for the clickers/mandatory attendance, I'd skip each lecture. Tests are super easy (all multiple choice ); just review the study guide and his lectures (which are all uploaded onto UBLearns). Whether you use the textbook depends on your TA.
Barbour is a god guy. He just takes a while in lectures and has super long pauses between his points. Recitation is super important, and make sure you study for recitation quizzes. Attendance is taken nearly every class with the clickers.
occassional hw in any recitation. lecture itself is really boring if you have no interest in history. two exams, in class, multiple choice. read and slightly pay attention youll do fine. one long paper due at end of semester, you pick topic and isnt that bad. takes attendance in lectures. some say hes brilliant but i found it boring
He's definitely an experienced man, but he's aging and it reflects in his teaching. He can't get through most of his sentences without taking long pauses, and his voice is very monotone and boring. Attendance is mandatory through clickers. His tests are very easy as long as you read his slides and study the vocab but he assigns a 10 page term paper
Warren is not a bad professor, the real problem are his TA's. Mine was Kathryn, and in addition to the 10 page term paper we were assigned she also assigned a 20 page CHILDREN'S BOOK for our final project. It is the most ridiculous and time consuming project I have ever been assigned. Quizzes or HW in recitation every week. Do not take this class.
I was surprised when i read the other reviews. I found Barbour to be a great professor. He is a bit older and so he takes his time while he talks but the class is easy and if you pay attention he is a pretty interesting guy. Recitation can be a little annoying depending on which TA you get, though.
Professor is good but the quality of the course depends on the TAs since they run most of the course. Test questions are multiple choice and are not guaranteed to be from the lecture material or textbook. Workload can get high sometimes. Also, you only get a couple weeks for a 10 page paper. The course isn't too bad if you put in the effort.
Class was mandatory through daily attendance quizzes. The exams and quizzes are very simple if you study, and quizzes have extra credit. Dr. Barbour is very knowledgable and caring towards his students. He speaks slowly, but lectures are very interesting. Take him if you get a chance, he makes World Civ 1 clear and understandable.
Expect to have 10 page essay as your final project. Plus register your recitation instructor other than Dr. Barbour for better grades on this class.
The man is very intelligent but his class was horribly set up. The recitation teachers made us show up to lectures although they admitted that professor barbour was teaching a curriculum completely irrelevant to the class itself. If you pick this professor, be highly aware of who your TA is. This is the person in charge of all grades and assignmen
Probably the best professor I ever met. Yes, you will face difficulties about hearing his voice but other than that. It's an easy A. His recitation is all about hearing what he did Free 40% of your total point. Exams are very straight forward because everything comes directly out from the test guide. I don't think he teaches anymore though...
