Only gives SUPER easy examples in class, yet tests and quizzes are ridiculously more difficult. Toughest class I've taken at UofL, and that includes CIS classes. Tells class on 1st day, "1/3 of you will fail my class." Hard professor.
tests only have 4-5 questions and is very very hard.
Easiest math course I have ever taken! Test questions come straight from the notes he gives in his lecture class, and are all very easy if you apply yourself. Math has not been my forte in the past so I would recommend him to anyone who struggles with the subject.
His class is so easy and if you go to class he sometimes gives out extra credit. I got A's on the first three test so he told me i didn't have to take the last test.
very well prepared for every class. he is always willing to answer questions or help if need be. As long as you go to the class or two before the test youll be fine
Aced First Test, explains everything well. Take notes and show up and you really would have to try not to get an A.
great guy, easy to talk to. test problems come straight from homework, although one or two might be tricky. best advice is to do all the homework and go to class, youll have to try extremely hard NOT to get an A.
Very easy class because it is very basic math
This guy doesn't like to explain your questions very much. He writes the notes, gives you your homework and you leave. If you're good at math, you won't care. I don't enjoy calculus at all.
make sure you go to class and write down everything he writes on the board. all of his test questions are either in the notes or in the homework. it really helps to do the homework. don't slack off on the first test, i got an F on the first test but got A's on the next 2 tests.
The first test is by far the hardest.
I thought this class was very easy. You have to go to class because he gives great notes and problems that show up on tests. "Homework" is key too because he pulls alot of the same problems on his tests. Oh, and if you get an A on the first 3 tests, he excuses you from the final (or atleast he did with me)
i love chellman! he gives you EVERY problem thats going to be on the test, and does it for you! if you go to class, he will help you even more. best math class i have ever taken.
Chellman made things very easy to understand. He went at a very comprehendible pace when going over material!
He was a really good teacher, I hate math and have done poorly in all previous math classes, but this one I did pretty good, I aced the first test! Make sure to go to class, the notes he gives are crystal clear, he gives all the test questions in class, and if you stay for the whole class time he sometimes gives out extra credit!
If you've never taken calculus, good luck.... he speeds through his lectures answers questions and ends class, If your unsure about even taking calculus, Don't take him. If your good at it already, he's an easy A...
second best teahcer I've had at UofL! Extremely easy class, I hate math and have never done well in it, but I was able to get an A in the course! He gives great lecture notes, and gives you every problem on the test. He acheives that fine line of being an easier teacher and still you learn a lot!
He is a good teacher. Just do the homework/practice problems and understand them and take good notes in class. be prepared for the first test and keep it up for all 4 tests
he made this the easiest class i have taken! it was a breeze. his tests came directly from the homework assignments.
Chellman is a VERY hard professor. Any of the positive reveiws I've read have not had the same experience as I have. All the hw problems are on the test, but the test consists of maybe 8 questions. I was very good at math before this class, and I'm borderline failing.
The rave reviews must be in a different class. Word of advice, don't take this class if you think you might not do well in College Algebra, pick another professor. Because just about half the class fails.
Teaches with utmost clarity and describes everything down to the best details of simplicity. Amazing professor.
This is the easiest math class I have ever had. he is incredibly easy to follow and willing to explain things over after class if it doesn't make sense. Good class. Definitely take it if you just need to take one math credit.
Chellman is fine to take if you are already know the material pretty well, as he is straight forward and not demanding. He is not a great choice if you are looking for an understanding or patient professor however. He will make fun of you in class. All test questions come from homework and class examples. Go to this class; he is picky on format.
Has a high failure rate, but I happened to receive an A. You MUST come to class and do the homework in order to do well in this class. He dumbs down the course for people who havent ever taken math at all. The only people who fail the class are people who dont show up or do the homework, and he will DEFINITELY ridicule those students for that.
Professor Chellman is pretty hard. I took calculus in high school, then took this class since i only needed one credit. This class was HARDER than my high school calculus class. I went to class everyday and did the homework and was in REACH atleast 2 times a week and still somehow got a C. Avoid him if you can, hes way to hard!
I was scared coming into this class. I was never good at math and he has a 50% failure rate. However, I'm glad I took it. His lectures are crystal clear and he will give you lots of test problems. You know what's going to be on the test, so as long as you make sure you know how to do everything and look over notes before the test, it's quite easy.
This was a very challenging class for me. I went to reach almost four times a week and i felt like i had a clear understanding on what i was doing, but the test problems were extremlly difficult. I ended up dropping the class because the the only thing he grades you on is your tests. He dosent offer any sort of extra credit.
Chellman's Math 111 class is absurd. He is one of the most cold hearted people you will ever meet when it comes to grades. I would avoid him at all cost. I got all A's my freshmen year and a C in his class. You need 400 points to get a B and I had 391 and he wouldn't help me out despite using REACH and never did i miss any lecture, and he knew it.
I would aviod at all cost. His test cover the most obscene parts of alegebra and his test are difficult. He says he gives you all of the problems on the test in class or through homework, however this is a flat lie. Hes a jerk and as hard you try his class is just to hard. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!
Very easy class if you already know the basics associated with simple algebra. I did all the homework when assigned and studied on my walk to class. Got above 90 on every test. All the test problems are in the homework or given in lecture. Very easy if you go to class.
He`s a good teacher and is willing to help if you go to him. His tests are a little difficult but he does try to give partial credit. I definitely recommend doing the homework, some problems are directly on the tests.
Mr. Chellman seems very friendly and willing to help. However, it seems as though he assumes the students know everything about Precalculus prior to attending class. He treats the class lectures as though they are review. His tests are extremely difficult, and 100% of your grade. Don't take unless you plan on majoring in math or want a challenge.
Chellman is generally kind and patient. However, he teaches this course as if it were a review for every student. Yet half of our class has never even seen this type of math. His lectures are clear and helpful. But the tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Often the tests do not reflect the assigned homework. Also, your grade is based solely off of 4 tests!!!!!!!
Grades slightly harsh on tests and confused me more than before. All the test questions comes from class and homework though. Make sure to explain all your answers or else you only get half credit. However, he is very helpful and answers any question someone has. Nice guy.
He only teaches from lecture but he very clear and gives examples that directly reflect the upcoming test. He assigns HW but is only for your benefit. There is only 4 tests in class but quizzes in the recitation.
I think he is a great professor and does a great job explaining every chapter. If you ATTTEND class and do the homework, its an easy class. if you ask questions he is always willing to help and doesnt make you feel dumb. I loved his class even though im not very good at math!
Chellman is the best mathematics professor I've ever had and I wish I could have had him the whole time that I was in high school. He's extremely helpful and is willing to spend half of his time in class (even when the lectures over) going over and helping students with homework which I found to be very rewarding. Tests are very easy or hard though
great professor. lessons are brief, so if youre not very good at math you may find it challenging but he is always willing to help after class. test policy is GREAT: if not prepared, you can skip it and just make it up by the end of the semester whenever youre prepared. he will go over any test with you and add points to grade if he finds an error
This class was pretty hard for me, being that I had it at 8:00 in the morning. He shows many examples, but they are not always the most helpful when trying to study. Your grade only consists of 4 tests. Not a bad class if you are very confident in math already.
Terrible teacher. Doesn't explain anything, doesn't respond to email, lost my test (yet he is counting the grade..shady), the TA is inept. Class is completely unfair. 4 100 point tests with maybe 8 questions each. 3 different TAs grade the tests so the scoring is inconsistent and totally subjective. Most people fail. No help from prof at all! AVOID
it is true that this is not one of the easier math 111 classes. But it is possible to get a good grade .do not miss any classes and go to recitation to get anyquestions you may have answered. with a little hard work it is possible to get an A, because i did and im far from a math genius
I love this professor. He is honest from the first day. If you don't do the homework and practice the problems u won't do well.
I don't like this professor. Three tests count for 90% of our grade...and there are only ten problems on each test. So you miss on or two things and you get a B at best, plus he tries to trick you sometimes. You have to attend class or at least get the homework problems from someone else because he NEVER uses Blackboard.
He is a good teacher, I got a B in the class and I saw him during office hours frequently and did all of the homework. His test are really difficult but class attendance is recommended because everything he teaches isn't in the book. Good teacher but VERY hard test.
Extremely hard class if you're not used to math coming in. The class is only based off 3 total exams, each with 10 problems equaling 100 percent.
If you aren't already a math genius, don't bother with the class. He moves very quickly through the notes, and has very sarcastic/rude responses to anyone who asks a question. Only 3 tests the entire semester, with 10 questions, and they're harder than anything.
Went to almost every class, went to reach, did all the homework and still almost failed. Good teacher, but he needs to teach the right things. Stay away!
Good professor. He's kind of a jerk but only to those who don't pay attention and ask him stupid questions or make him repeat himself. He's very helpful if you ask and does everything step by step so you can keep up. Attendance is mandatory because you cover a new chapter every class & notes are all you really have to learn from. Class was easy.
Tests were impossible. Only 3 tests worth 90% of your grade with 10 problems on each. Extremely difficult because he expects you to know a lot of things before coming in. Also, recitation is not helpful at all. Would not recommend at all
Overall was a good professor and would help you under stand if you needed help. Just go to every class and take notes and dont be lazy. IF you're lazy then you wont be good at math. I had to drop my other math 111 teacher and then got chellman and my grade went up 2 almost 3 letter grades.
TAKE this Prof. Go to class and pay attention, do the HW. Thats all I did and passed easily. Makes material easy to understand.
His class is pretty straight forward. He lectures a new chapter each day in class and gives clear step by step instructions on how to work problems. You don't turn in homework but I would still recommend doing it because it's great practice. Gives you a list of what to study for test and as long as you take notes in class its not hard.
Horrible Professor. I did all the homework, went to REACH, went to every single class. Homework does not count for credit. Yet, there's only three tests which amounts to 90% of your grade with only 10 questions on each one. If you can take a another professor I would definitely recommend it.
3 tests are 90% of your grade. Assigns homework every class but it is not turned in. Answers any questions in class. Best of all: he speaks english! i came into the class with prior knowledge so it wasn't too hard for me. but i think it would be challenging for anyone who is learning it for the first time. he is willing to help anyone who needs it
3 tests make up your grade. He does not care if you want extra credit or homework to do. He basically tells you "Sorry. Don't show up."
Very clear cut. If you have taken pre-cal, you should have no problem with this course. That being said, 3 tests are 90% of your grade, so as long as you practice a bit, you'll be fine.
Tests are not like the homework
Professor Chellman is hilarious. He is clear on what will be on tests and makes sure to tell you to watch out for things on the test that trip people up. He's very honest and may seem like he doesn't care if his students pass or fail, but he's a nice old man. Tests are difficult compared to what I thought they would be like.
Super easy class. Just go and do the homework he assigns and you'll be golden! If you need help, he will!
Moves through material quickly but always willing to stop for questions and stay after if needed. Teaches through an outline method which made it easy to follow and take notes. Clear expectations for tests.
Professor moves at a decent pace, but you have to go to class. Tests are short and he gives partial credit. Hw is not collected but many tests problems come from hw. Textbook is a must. It's an easy A, if you do the hw and pay attention in class, and sit in front.
He is great prof. GO TO CLASS, he teaches things that are not in the book. In class he also tells you exact problems that will be on the exam, GO TO CLASS, he tells you what most people mess up on. He has a nonchalant attitude, but is willing to help anyone that ask for it. Also do the homework is not collected but many test problems come from it.
Homework is not collected, but do it! The tests are tougher than the homework, so do extra problems. If you ask for help, he will help. Don't text in class, he notices and calls you out for it.
He is really good at explaining the concepts, and is willing to help anyone who doesn't understand. The homework isn't required, but do it! It will help. Come to the lectures, he gives example test problems. The test questions are harder than the homework and class examples, so be sure to study and you should be fine.
Professor is by the book. He gives homework but its not graded. He goes over alot of material during class, expect to really be confused. Also, a quiz every week only counts 10% of grade. 3 test, he uses the hardest questions but trys to also trick you. 10 questions each, 90% of your grade. Test are not like homework or class work and impossible...
He assigns homework but doesn't collect it and the Exams have nothing to do with the homework. Avoid
He is very straight forward. He gives you the examples and they are more or less the same on the test. Go to class and take notes and you will get an easy A or B. Very basic math class.
This professor is the best professor teaching math 111. Go to class and take notes and do the homework and go to the tutoring center and you will be fine. Make sure you study the problems he goes over in the lecture and know how to do similar ones.
Amazing Professor!! Currently taking the class. Recommending to everyone who needs to take a Math111 class. His explanations are great and easy to understand. He will stop the lecture sometimes and go step by step of the problem if you need a clarification. Overall, if you really want to understand math or having trouble then take his class.
His class is a little difficult, but he's a pretty chill guy. If you do not understand something, SAY SOMETHING. He'll explain and go step by step. Teaches exact problems that will be on the test. PAY ATTENTION. And take notes to pass. HE CARES. I made it known it was my 3rd time taking CA and he passed me when I'm 90% positive i shoulda failed.
He gives good lectures. This is the first time I took calc. I had to study hard and I did alright on the tests. Overall I'm happy with how things went
He's a good math professor. Gives good lectures and feedback on tests. Had to study hard but I did and passed the class.
Attendance is not needed, but recommended for learning. Class is 90% 4 exams. 10% recitation. Class is VERY Lecture heavy. You're expected to already know a lot. Just tells you problems, but rarely shows how it works. Very Hard. USE REACH. I'm Stuck repeating as he's the only 180 teacher. This class is my crux. Tests are VERY Hard Only 10 Qs
I took him before so I didn't think this class would be too horrible. Boy was I wrong. If you take this you might want to familiarize yourself with Khan Academy because he goes too fast and barely explains anything. You're expected to already know a lot when you come in. Horrible class.
1 point away from a B and he would not round up. Worked my butt off in this class and still couldn't get an A (I have straight A's and this is the only class I have gotten anything less than an A in) Go to recessatation DO NOT EVER MISS, tests heavy and super boring. Never replies to emails
He's pretty straightforward on what he's gonna put on exams, just attend lecture and take good notes. The only thing I would watch out for is having the Recitation TA Sarah King. She offers quizzes which don't make any sense on random days, going to her class is very pointless. Avoid her at all costs if possible.
Didn't take the first 3 exams, but Prof. Chellman let me take them the last week. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to do well, it's key. As long as you show up to lecture and understand the basics of whats going on, you'll pass. Four exams are given. Homework isn't mandatory, but given at the end of class. Very understanding.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to do well, it's key. As long as you show up to lecture and understand the basics of whats going on, you'll pass. Four exams are given. Homework isn't mandatory, but given at the end of class. Very understanding professor. Solid Choice. Also accessible over email outside of class.
Chellman is one of my favorite calculus teachers to date. I never really understood math or liked it until I took his course. As long as you show up to class, take notes, and write down the problems (a.k.a. the test) that he goes over, you should pass no problem. He doesn't allow calculators, but you never need them as long as you study.
Chellman does not beat around the bush. Let's you know everything that's expected first day of class. If you go to class, take notes and do the HW you will do fine. 3 tests, 10 Q's each. He will tell you the exact style of problems that will be on the test. Put some effort in studying and its an Easy A or B. Basic Algebra class.
Professor Chellman was a good professor and taught the material well. His tests were challenging and I always seemed to have a much harder time on those than the many quizzes I took in recitation. Overall calculus is calculus and Professor Chellman was pretty good at teaching it. I recommend going to class because it helps a lot.
He is a good professor who cares. lecture is straight forward and he gives good examples. You NEED to go because his tests are based on lecture problems and the homework he assigns in class. study those for the 4 exams and you should get an a/b. Class was super nice because his lecture was usually only 30 minutes, never stayed the whole 75 mins.
Professor Chellman explains the information well. It's super important to go to class because many of the examples he gives you are problems like he puts on the test. I also recommend doing the homework problems to make sure you understand the information. He's available to answer questions after each class and tries to help his students.
If Math is not your strong suit, i would not recommend Chellman. He is definitely very intelligent, but he moves very quick. Do the HW he assigns (he doesn't grade it) because it really helps for the tests and since your grade is only based off of those tests and recitation points, you'll need the extra practice!
He lectures as if you already understand the material and know what you're doing. 90 percent of your grade is based on 3 exams. If you don't do well on one, you're probably not going to pass. He grades awful and takes off points for very minor things. Definitely will not take this professor again.
Kinda sexist, but whatever! If you dont go you wont pass, simple as that.
awful teacher, i had no idea ever what was going on and he moves very fast. I ended with a very low grade and i got all the recitation points. did fine of the quizzes, never on his tests. did all homework problems and when it came to the test, it was nothing like them. AVOID
Initially, I thought professor Chellman was a cool, laid back guy with a great teaching style. I had all mid-A's for the first two tests, but that third test was awful. I failed the last test and ended up with a B. He throws in tricky questions that don't reflect what you did in homework. This was just my experience. The test are all different.
Walked class through the content pretty well. Show up, take notes and do the homework and make sure you understand it and you should be fine. The tests can be tricky though. Like others said he throws some different types of questions at you.
If you don't know something, he makes you feel like you're stupid. Only puts 5-10 questions on each exam so if you mess up one you won't do well.
Chellman is very cut and dry. Show up, write what he writes on the board, do the homework problems he assigns (not graded), and ask questions. He is straight forward. If you pay attention and practice the material, you will be fine. Tests are extremely similar to homework problems. Getting a B or A is very possible if you put forth the effort.
Chellman's class got out early each class. I am good at algebra so I thought it was rather simple, but many people in the class felt confused. He tried to address and help as many people as possible. I would take him again if I needed another Math credit.
He never posted grades on blackboard. If you wanted to know what you got on an exam you had to stop by either after class and see if he could pull it up or stop during his office hours. In terms of teaching you have to be paying attention the WHOLE time or you'll miss something. I went the whole class not knowing my grade until now.
This class is only graded by 4 tests and your recitation grade. There is absolutely no reason to go to class at all. At the beginning he will give participation points for showing up. He writes on the board what the book says. Go to recitation and do the homework and you will easily get an A.
Only grades are 4 exams (90%) and recitation grade (10%). Attendance not required but he gives important information for exams if you go. Rarely stay the full class. Lectures are dry and it's just him teaching to you and you write it down. Material is challenging but doable. He takes hw problems and makes it slightly harder for exams so be careful
3 exams worth 30% of your final grade and the other 10% is from quizzes in the recitation class. Chellman does not use blackboard so you will never be able to keep up with your grades and he makes his exams extremely difficult and consist of problems we hadn't practiced in class. Too much to remember in a semester to only have 3 exams.
Dr. Chellman makes math much more easy than others in the Math Dept. He's very knowledgable but explains all the topics in a way that's super easy to understand. He cares about his students and is clear about what material will be on the test. Great for intro to math classes.
Great professor. Possible to get an A/B but be ready to work for it. He doesnt collect the homework but its beneficial to prepare for tests. Accessible outside of class and willing to help you. Attendance isnt mandatory but the notes you take in class also help prepare for tests.
Professor Chellman will tell you that you will get an A in the class as long as you come to class and do the homework. Well I did both and got a B. He says the tests are 60% homework problems and 40% in class problems, but every test had much harder problems and some things he never introduced us to. Lectures are boring. My only B for the semester.
