Excellent feedback, hilariously funny...super sexxxy..WOW
Warrens looks are only out done by his charming personality
One of the best profs I ever had!
You are hot and when I say hot I mean like really really hot...Ya Know
He struck me as pretty average overall. Not a bad lecturer, but could have been more attentive and helpful in seminar course.
I thought he was a horrible prof. I had european history with him and the only thing I learned was British history. NAPOLEON? who was he, we never learnt about him, so I guess he wasn't that important to european history.
I had a couple classes with Elofson. Sure, he's not my idea of a hottie, but then again I paid my tuition to learn a few things. He was a very clear, articulate teacher and willing to answer questions. And he gave encouraging advice. (thank-you)
This guy was the man, i loved learning about population growth and how that influenced society and ended up causing change in the parliamentary system in Britain. He draws amazing manor house pictures.
M.M. Postan forever! who knew that population growth was so capitvating? The only question left at the end of this course was How many sub-sub-sub-sub tenants in chief could there be?
Population growth may have been the thesis for the course, but would it have hurt to give us a bit on the politics and wars of the time? good prof though, likes to help you along as well as he can using seminar sessions and no-rules exams.
Wonderful prof, really knows what he is talking about, very helpful, very flexible. Treats university students like they have something to offer the academic world!
Dr. Elofson, in this small informal class setting proved to be a caring professor and a fair marker. Elofson isn't always clear in his expectations though. You may find yourself asking for clarification.
Horrible prof. He can teach I'll give him that but he has his favorites and picks on/ignores those who aren't. I don't understand how this man could have become the department head. I'm going to avoid any class he's teaching from now on.
Dr. Elofson is a really knowledgeable guy for sure. He picked a boring topic for our course - the American Dust Bowl - but he made it as interesting as he possibly could. He is passionate about the subject which makes it a lot easier to listen to. He could use some supplementary notes on the overhead but other than that he's pretty good!
If you're looking for a professor who can make the 1930's interesting this is the professor for you. He is passionate about his topics and has interesting lectures. You can tell that he's knowledgeable on the material but his essay questions are often vague and open ended. A good professor overall.
I had a course with 6 different profs he was by far one of the best. Very compprehensible, straight forward and didn't ramble too much.
My favourite history teacher to date! Work load was medium. Easy marker. Participate in his classes and you are golden. I only went to the classes that we got marked for. The final I just researched info to write my essays on. And can't forget to mention his beautiful blue eyes!
Dr. Elofson is a very good lecturer, you can obviously tell that he's very knowledgable and passionate about history. Although I wouldn't say he marks extremely hard, I wouldn't say he's an easy marker. On exams, papers are graded solely on content, but term papers are a different story, so be prepared!
I had an awesome experience in Dr Elofson's class. Class discussions were fun, he was always available to help if needed. Being a first year class many students were struggling with aspects of writing a paper and he was very good about giving people the opportunity and time to get it right. I highly recommend taking a class from him.
Awesome professor!! Very interesting, and obvious he knows his stuff. Extremely friendly and approachable. Took this course as an option and loved it. Cant emphasize how awesome he is. His course moves away from statistics and timelines and focuses on historical issues. Perfect for anyone opinionated and willing to put in some work.
NOT a skilled communicator, at least verbally. He knows what he wants from his students but communicating that is a different story. He encourages open debate and loves to give A's
Dr. Elofson is a very nice prof. He is sympathetic with students and very understanding. If you seek help, he will really assist you. His lectures are good, but a little dry. For assignments and papers, I found he wasn't too clear. There is no clearcut outline for what he is looking for in a paper, at least he does not communicate it well.
I thought the focus of the class would be a bit more broad but it focused almost entirely on social change. This was a bit boring at times and the lectures were a bit hard to follow. Going to class is a must as the final is an essay question based entirely on course material. Didn't use the textbook once, wast of $100. Fair assignments and marker.
This class is fundamentally easy, if you attend every class. If you don't, don't count on doing well. Even if you're sick and have a doctor's note, he won't do much to help you out. The lectures seem pointless, which makes attendance frustrating. He just lists off events and doesn't go into any depth as to what they are, and doesn't post his notes
I thought this class would be easy considering Warren believes every person should get an A. The lectures were very boring, not well organized, and would sometimes repeat things from earlier lectures. The slides are blank white with random facts scattered around. Marks are very inconsistent, on the first day he said "throw out the textbook".
His notes are kind of all over the place, but he gives you the midterm and final questions way before hand. That was super helpful, also he is very understand and marks fairly decent.
Very good prof, if you are a history major take his History 439, it will help your writing of history essays a lot. Also you really get to engage in his upper level history classes. I enjoyed it very much and he gave me lots of resources for my paper. Highly recommended for history majors.
Elofson is the best history prof at UofC! He is so understanding, engaging, and great lecturer! His class is an easy A if you attend! He gives you everything you need to do well! (including the final question ahead of time) He gives everyone who attends class regularly an A in participation mark worth 20% of your grade! Would recommend to anyone!(:
Great Professor. He really wants his students to succeed. If you just show up and pay attention in his lectures then you will do well. He has very clear expectations. Lectures seem boring in the beginning but get more and more interesting as time goes on. Textbook is useless though, I didn't even look at it once.
Really enjoyed this course. You can tell Dr. Elofson wants his students to succeed and doesn't place super high standards on grading. Attend class, take notes and work hard on your paper and you'll do fine. Only real complaint is his lecture format isn't the most cohesive. Other than that i'd highly recommend this class.
Dr. Elofson wants students to get an A. If you show up, participate, and put in actual effort, you will do well. Lecture can be a bit boring and slides lack visual stimulation. His TA and him were both super helpful, kind, and very fair markers. He puts so much effort into his classes and into the success of his students. Overall, a fantastic prof
THIS NICEST, SWEETEST MAN AT U OF C! I took his class in block week but I want to take him again for a full semester! Amazing man who knows everything and is encouraging and understanding about all styles of thinking. Gives his all to his classes. Be nice to him please. Only need the source book from bound and copied and attendance needed!
Spectacular professor. He literally sat down and told us everything to write on the final, over the course of the semester. Would highly recommend his class if you are willing to go and pay attention. As a bonus, he's hilarious if you catch his jokes.
Second class I've taken with Elofson and he has really grown on me. He's very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches and he always welcomes student's questions. Fair marker on the essay and book review. Final exam is open book. If you put in the effort this is an easy A or A-.
Really good. Wants you to pass and will give you the tools for an A. Basically gives you everything you need to get an A. Super nice and allows you to think for yourself
Professor Elofson is a brilliant man. It's so clear that he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His take on history is unique and I truly learned a lot in this class. Would definitely take again.
Lectures can be boring but he's very focused and wants everyone to succeed, learned a lot as well. Didn't need the textbook.
Nice approach to class, focuses on a lot of hands-on group work which is nice and refreshing for history. Lectures can be a bit monotonous but the content is not bad. Nice guy and easy to approach. If you meet all of his expectations he will give you an easy A. A few readings-chapters and articles. Some are harder to read than others but still okay
Weekly reading/group work was one of the easiest parts of the class. No textbook required & articles are provided by him. Really enthusiastic but material is dry. Gives good feedback and advice, plus extensions if requested. Attendance is MANDATORY for him, even if you're not paying attention. Easiest A I've ever gotten in a history course.
Easy class, great prof. Lectures can get dry, but the group work is very beneficial. Don't waste your money on the textbook, as everything is based on the lectures. Open book final, only one question that he gives to you a week before. Easy and fast grader, would take again.
Dr. Elofson was absolutely great! Marks were based off a midterm, book assessment, and final PLUS weekly group work which was an easy A if you went to class. He was excellent at preparing us for ALL the assignments IF you attended class. Also more than willing to help you out with the assignments if you needed it.
Dr. Elofson is great! This class and the material is pretty easy and the weekly group work is a good grade booster. He is a pretty kind marker and gives good feedback.
Great guy, really funny and fun to listen to. I took it as an option but I don't recommend it as an option. If you hate essays, the class will destroy you but if you are a History major or really love history and like essays, then the class is easy. Be careful, attend class for the group work and start reading for the book assessment early.
He's a really great professor and knows a lot on the subject. It's best to make notes as he's talking since the powerpoints are more skeleton notes. He makes it clear what he expects for the exams (which are take home essays) so if you sit down read what he wants and do that it'll be easy. He is compassionate and understanding!
He's a nice prof and can be quite funny either intentionally or unintentionally. The grading of work is very fair and he encourages students to think outside the box for the essays. One slight negative is that his powerpoint slides are very dull, so it can be difficult to pay attention in class.
Easy marker and straight forward assignments. One book assessment, research paper, final and group work every Friday. Textbook was not really needed, mostly based on lectures. Lecture notes were very confusing and unclear so you really have to pay attention. Impossible to communicate with him through email, he rarely responds but easy class
Good professor, but just wasn't my teaching style. I found his lectures kind of bland, and the book assessments were a bit tough, but easy enough if you put some effort into them. Textbook not needed (I returned mine) and group work 100% essential, it can really boost your grade. Interesting material though.
Lectures were really bland and he just read off his powerpoints. The group works were easy marks but other than that he marks on your grammer and not your content which is wrong to do. There are for sure better history profs in the department.
Dr Elofson puts a great emphasis on reading in his class. Make sure to start well ahead on your book readings and allocate sufficient time for not just reading them but also taking notes on the content, as it can get dry but you need to understand it for the papers. The group work is also beneficial so attending is must.
Dude has a phd from Oxford what can I say
Dr. Elofson is an amazing prof! He doesn't believe in tests so everything was essay based (term paper, midterm and final) and participation every week. We only did participation classes on Friday, but were super helpful for the midterm and final! The final is a take home essay which was even better! He is very passionate and makes the class fun.
dont miss fridays! fridays are the best. dont miss his classes in general. they are boring but so easy. you will pass and you wont even feel like you had to do anything. he is funny, a good speaker and an easy grader! I regret skipping his classes.
Elofson is awesome. Really passionate about the material, in this course in particular. Cared about our success and helped at any opportunity. Genuine, good-natured and inspirational. Book review, group essay and individual and group weekly submissions were the components. Participate, enjoy the class and you will be successful. Highly recommend.
Dr. Elofson is a good choice for anyone wishing to have an easier experience in a history class which focuses more on group work and lectures. Individual writing and textbook reading are less important. I may be biased however as I was very interested by the content of HTST 357 itself. If you are interested in Alberta's history- HTST 357 is for you
Dr. Elofson is true U of C tressure. I have taken multiple classes with him. Put in a little effort and an A or A+ is easily possible. Dr. Elofson knows his stuff, his lectures are super interesting, and he is a very nice and easy to talk to guy. He does however use group work a lot, so be weary of that if its not your thing.
Elofson is by far the best history prof I've had at UofC thus far. He makes the classes interesting and he is a very fair marker. There aren't many tests, your grade is more dependent on group projects, essays, and participation. I would definitely take his class again!
This guy... Great guy for sure. Really nice guy, even. But your papers are marked based on your grammar rather than your content. Group discussion assignments were said to be marked one way and then when you do it the way he says, you still get a mediocre grade. Lectures are 150+ slides long, where he reads to you for at least half of it.
Dr. Elofson is an amazing prof. If you are a history major and can take a seminar with him I highly recommend it. He is very encouraging with his feedback and inspired me to be interested in a subject I previously didn't care much about. Although the course was more challenging due to its focus on written assignments, he is a very fair grader.
Dr. Elofson is easily amongst the best professors at U of C, let alone in the HTST dept. Usually engaging lectures and knows how to deliver ideas and information. Regular small group discussion for marks, but through this you will learn everything you need to know for the class and the papers. Nail the thesis for the book report. Easy A imho
Dr. Elofsson is a nice man, and he seems to care about his students. But he seems more concerned about giving his lectures in regards to contemporary politics and his view on them rather than giving us a lecture about the actual historical context. When he does give lectures on history, they are often very one-sided.
Professor Elofson is a great prof in many ways, but format may not appeal to all. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Genuinely enjoys teaching, engaging and supporting students. A stellar human &genuinely good guy. Group work/participation 40%. Two book assessments 60%. Provides lengthy power points for each class. No text or assigned readings.
He was an interesting guy. I didn't love the class and thought Elofson had some questionable views as there were some comment made throughout the course that were racist. But that being said when the professor had a good lecture it was definitely attending the class. He is a fair marker though
Elofson is very knowledgeable about history, but could not stick to the syllabus schedule in the slightest, we did not complete course content that the syllabus had in it. 3 papers were the extent of our assignments and no tests at all but two papers were book reviews on the most boring books written; if you don't attend class you will fail
Elofson loves history! Helpful if you ask questions, go to his office hours, but he did not follow the syllabus at all! Class was divided into three papers, two of which were based only on books he assigned which were the most boring i've ever read and the last is a final based on the lectures. Go to this class or you will fail the final
I personally would avoid any of his classes.
Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topics. Participation in group discussions is a must. He shows lots of primary sources (quotes, newspapers, art, etc) in his lectures that really drive the point across.
I am still unsure of what the class I took was supposed to be about. Very hard to follow and disorganized. Very unclear expectations and feedback consist of telling students they do not understand the material, without any elaboration on what that means or how to correct it. Would avoid if you care for your GPA since grading is seemingly arbitrary.
He is a decent prof. He is older so it can be hard to hear him at times and midway through the semester he stopped posting slides before the class which made it hard to follow. Worst part of the class is that he doesn't have clear guidelines. Did good the entire class except for the final paper because there were no clear instructions.
Super rude. I had a prior commitment so I requested a make up assignment and he was super disrespectful in his response instead of addressing the issue like an adult. Definitely 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND if you care about things other than the Wild West
I have a lot of confusion as to what we were supposed to learn. He seems to keep giving the same lecture over and over again, repeating that the "frontier changed people". The class is not difficult, but it may be getting to the point where retirement should be considered.
I am usually the type of person to ignore bad reviews on profs or like the prof that has bad reviews. However, Elofson is an exception. Im sure he was good in prior years but now he is very rude and an arbitrary grader. Wants to read the same paper over and over again. He is clearly getting sick of teaching but yet does not retire.
Honestly one of the harder classes i've taken, mainly because of his grading criteria which is very vague. he doesn't give much information on any of the papers (like 2 sentences) and then grades quite harshly for not meeting standards that he didn't tell you about in the first place
Hands down one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is quite arrogant and will be quick to shut you down with outdated comments and rants. He requires you to regurgitate his book for the book review, which was easy enough, but me and my classmates suspected he wasn't even reading them, just skimming and giving arbitrary marks.
I have taken HTST 338, 357, 427, and 517 with Elofson. He is by far the best prof I have had during my time in uni, and he even inspired me to pursue a second major in history. I loved that all his classes included group work. I met some great people over the years thanks to Elofson. He loves to assign book reviews. Don't forget to NAIL THE THESIS!
Honestly a lovely professor to have, he looked like his face would be in Mount Rushmore, you really need to go to group work to succeed.
I would avoid this professor if you actually want to learn anything. The lectures mostly consist of reading off slides without any analysis. In terms of the class, his chosen info has very little to do with overall history and its impact on Europe. Also consistently bases the class on his personal views. annoying and a waste of time.
Had him for two classes now. He gives high marks for book reviews and participation assignments but grades the final paper very harshly mentioning expectations that were never given, same pattern in both classes. Lectures are boring; he just reads directly off slides in a monotone voice. Assignment instructions are often vague and poorly worded.
Took this class as a third year. Hes nice but much of what he says isnt very historically accurate and is based on his personal perspective, which is fine, but not great when its a survey course. I feel like I didn't learn that much about European history but rather about theories he finds interesting. Didn't enjoy the way he talks to students.
Dr. Elofson's perspective on European history was incredibly interesting. There were definitely times where he could be quite pessimistic about things, but the course was interesting regardless. Modern history is not my thing, but his commentary made me curious about it. Had 3 essays + final paper, lecture slides weren't the highest quality
amazing professor, extremely knowledgeable on his topic. only graded by 5 things, all essays which included the final, but it worked perfectly for me. essays were open book, making consistent reviews of notes basically included in the course, making everything make more sense. really awesome professor and a great class!
Only four essays plus a final essay. Literally just put exactly what he says in lecture into the essay and you'll pass. Do not go into this class with this prof expecting a general survey of European history. Entire course was very pointed to a central thesis about militarism.
He himself was not a bad professor, in fact the opposite, good lectures and clear assignments. The course itself was bland, boring, repetitive and disorganized. It felt like a giant ad for his book and I didnt really learn anything and want my money back.
It's harder to stay awake than it is to get an A. Easy but boring
