he looks scared in front of the class and is unable to answer many questions
Doesn't give good notes. Gives simple examples but tough questions on test...almost like he's trying to trick you.
He seems scared an unsure of himself. He only goes over the basic concepts, but then goes way in depth on his tests. His tone of voice also makes his lectures very boring.
Gives poor notes, and very poor practice questions. He does nothing more than follow the book exactly, and gives you book print--outs for test reviews. Test questions are very hard though. Extremly boring to sit through lecture. Bad at relating info.
I think that he is fair game; may be boring at times. He seems like he is scared but with the class size and the competitve students he's dealing with...I can completely understand. Do the work and you can earn a very good grade.
Lectures constisted of him reading a powerpoint of notes on the book. Spent too much time on easy review stuff and rushed through the more difficult material. Review problems in book were not similar to problems on tests and quizzes.
All i have to say is read your book, becuase you will realize after you fail his first few quizes that you learn nothing from him and everything on your own. He is a really nice guy, but just not a good teacher at all and the material is not easy!
He is the worst prof I have ever had. His labs turn into three hour lectures... Do not take his class if you can avoid it... HONESTLY!
Way too much lecturing in lab and for all the lecturing he does you still don't really understand what to do. Really no point reading the lab going into it b/c he explains it all, hope you dont have him for lab
horrible lab professor. takes up too much time in lab lecturing on what lecture professor has already lectured. labs should be easy but he makes them diffuclt. take someone else for lab if you can. honestly a waste of my freaking time to even go.
EXPLAINS ALOT DURING THE LABS AND IT ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP WHEN YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. EASY GOING GUY BUT A GREAT LAB TEACHER!
Talks a lot before the actual experiment, making lab much longer than it should be. Sort of intimidating at first, but helps you if you ask. Expects more out of you than an entry level chem course. Other lab profs. are much more enjoyable
Most boring class I have ever taken. He is very unclear and doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. I skipped most of my classes and the info I taught to myself gave me a better grade then listenting to him. Be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING because he is not going to. Exams are easy and repetitive. You can skip class and be fine.
Gallagher is not easy, but he does do a good job of teaching the material. The class is going to be tough and boring, but show up to class and do some outside studying and you'll do fine.
great teacher, at least for an "easy" nursing chem class
Very helpful if you take the time to see him. The class isn't terribly easy but reading the book and looking over his slides, it is not bad. He is a good teacher and a nice guy
nice guy, definitely willing to help you out. you never have to go to class. his exams are kinda tough, but do-able, he grades pretty easily. 4 exams is all that your grade is based on.
Warren doesn't teach this class. He jumps all over the place, races through slides, and he is not clear on what we are learning. Be prepared to teach yourself out of the book because going to class is pretty much pointless.
He gets a lot of rap for being unclear and confusing, which he is at times, but I also believe that this is his first time teaching this material after switching books. The class isn't horrible if you read the book and do the practice problems, but don't plan on relying on lecture.
I think he would be a better teacher if the class size were smaller. He provides slides for the lecture, but doesn't post slides until after most lectures. If you do the practice problems from the book he tells you to do, you will do fine on the exams, but be prepared to teach yourself the majority of the material from the book.
I felt bad for Gallagher. Students were rude and impatient with him. He was very helpful when I met with him during office hours. I do feel like he was overwhelmed sometimes and should have a TA to help.
I was unsure about him at first but got to know him and he really is a nice guy! Yea, the lab is longer than it needs to be, but he wants to make sure we understand the material and how it relates to what we will be doing. He is willing to help, however I basically taught myself the material through the book and practice problems. STUDY LOTS!
If you must take biochem, take another professor. Uses only powerpoint (no board usage), uploads the files as useless movies 1 - 2 days before the exams, and spaces the exams out horribly. One of the worst professors I've ever had-totally killed any interest I had in biochemistry. Take the 2 semesters of biochem instead of the 1 for the ACS degree.
I disagree with all of the negative comments. I think he did a great job presenting the material in a clear and easy that is easy to understand. He isn't going to hand-feed you everything, but this is a 400 level chemistry course - students need to take some responsibility to the textbook and learn the material. Overall, good prof, learned a lot
If you READ the lab manual before class you should be fine. He talks for an hour in the beginning but he explains what we will be doing in lab. He is always willing to ask questions and very knowledge able about the topic. The labs do take longer than they should, but that is because he makes shure you understand what the expariment is about.
Kind of a quiet guy, but helpful if you talk to him after class.
He is a good teacher, but a poor test writer. I thought I understood the class material very well, but the exams were something else. However, he is pretty easy on the grading scale to make up for it. The text book was useless.
He's a nice guy, but be prepared to teach yourself. He goes very quickly through the material but actually REALLY know the material when it comes to exams. They're a little on the tough side.
It's hard if you are not good at teaching yourself. Exams are hard. Some of the questions in the exams are not even discusse in lecture..but he is a nice professor n helpful if you go to his office hours. Overall, I still dont recommand taking him..he is too unorganize
The class he taught has been taught by other teachers. I made the mistake of taking it with him. This is a 100 lvl course but is taught as a 400 lvl by him. It is a weed out course to get rid of nursing students who won't get accepted. His tests are not notes based, nor r the quizzes. He never gave us enuf time, and wasn't very helpful w/ questions
Teach yourself through the book's practice problems. Lectures are pointless, just need the book. Exams are very hard but teacher is lenient on grading. Quizzes are nice because lowest 2 of 6 are dropped. Class is about drawing condensed structures of molecules and naming them. Once you get the hang of it, the rest of the semester goes smoothly.
Biochem I lab is interesting, but he spent the first hour or 2 of everyday lecturing/reviewing. it wouldn't have been as bad if he did it during the long breaks while the centrifuge was running, etc. He expected us to write abnormally long reports that were really weird. He was also a tough grader.
Please, please take this over winterm if you have to take this class. It is possible to do well if you take it with Warren, but honestly not worth the extra time that you are forced to put in if you actually want to do well.
If I could go back in time, I wouldn't have taken this course with this professor. It is extremely time consuming outside of class. He doesn't follow along with the book and jumps around frequently. Nowadays, I go to lecture to get participation points, but tune him out and teach myself through the book only. Be prepared to study A LOT.
Terrible professor. He doesn't follow his powerpoints and is always going on tangents that don't pertain to the material. Be expected to teach yourself, his tests are extremely hard, and the homework is pointless. I don't recommend him at all.
PLEASE try to take this online or with someone else. Nice guy, but NOT a good teacher. Goes through notes way too quickly, does not explain things well, and tests you on things you haven't covered in class. Lecture is pointless, he goes through so fast you can't process the info. Rely on the book, tho its very time consuming to learn it yourself.
I only had Dr. Gallagher for my lab but he was a very helpful professor. If my group had a question he would answer it and always helped us with the flow chart for the final lab practical. He wants what is best for his students but talks for a great deal of the lab period, so we often ran out of time.
Gallagher was unprepared for lecture most of the time. He rarely answered questions well. The tests went on tangents that were extremely in-depth for a 100 level class. If you have ANY other option to take this class through a different professor, do it. I didn't struggle in my 200 level classes this year, yet this 100 level was a disaster!
His tests aren't the easiest, but he finds a way to make class easier by dropping two lowest quizzes and adding clicker points to the final grade. I got an A in the class, but had to work fairly hard for it. Be prepared to study a lot from the book and make sure to study from previous exams in past years.
His lectures went too fast to comprehend what was happening. The only point of going to class was to get iClicker points. If you have a question, he won't be of any help. His tests were difficult, the online assignments were time-consuming, and I had to get a tutor and study an insane amount to pull off an A. Don't take it with him!
Don't take this professor! He was unprepared for lecture, disorganized, unclear, unfocused and most of the examples he gave us in class were wrong and had to be corrected by students! His lectures are a waste of time aside from the clicker questions. He is a good guy, but a terrible professor.
Prof Gallagher wasn't the greatest teacher in class, however when I did visit him in his office hours he really did do a good job clearing things up. If you read the book thoroughly, go to class and go in for help you should be fine. I got a 95% but I did have to do a lot of work, but it is worth it!

His class is boring and he is kind of hard to follow for notes but he is definitely a nice guy. Online homework every week but its easy to do. He gives a study guide before the exam that identical to the exam but with different numbers so if you study that tests are easy. I would recommend this class for an easy A. Takes attendance by i clickers.
Be prepared to teach yourself the chemistry and be prepared for loooong homework assignments weekly. Nice dude, not the most organized
Professor Gallagher is not one of the best teachers in class, however, if you stay after and ask questions he is much clearer. Online homework is due every other week and it is time consuming, but if you spend time to do well on it, it boosts your grade and prepares you well for tests. Overall, this class is quite easy if you devote time to it.
You have to have knowledge of chemistry going into this class, it wont be bad if you do. He lectures and it is kind of boring but usually helpful.
This class rocked. It was actually interesting. Homework was not bad and you had forever to work on it. He was so helpful in office hours. I would totally take this class again.
You could either show up to class and not have to look at your textbook OR Read though each chapter on your own and take a nap during lecture.. both lead to the same result. Definitely do your online assignments, that's were I learned the most information.
Professor Gallagher is a nice guy and he definitely knows what he is talking about, however does not give a very good lecture. If I had not taken high school chemistry I don't know how I would have passed. That being said if you go to him for help he will go out of his way to help you.
Professor Gallagher was a really great professor. He is always available for help during office hours and really cares about you. Be ready for online homework. But with that being said, the homework is helpful in preparing for the tests and is also worth a decent amount of points. I really liked Dr. Gallagher and hope to have him again.
The class is still chemistry so it can still be kinda hard but on some occasions skipping class will not prevent you from passing the class. The online homework can be kind of a pain in the neck so it is advised to work with other students on it.
He was super confusing in lectures and was pretty boring. He is super smart but not really the best at teaching. However, his tests weren't too bad, he gave a study guide a few days in advance which really helped!
Lectures were boring and not very helpful, material was explained very poorly. Taught myself with the help of the online homework (OWL). Expect to spend many hours a week on homework. I left class frustrated many times and felt like my time was wasted. Tests are very similar to the study guides, so go to the SI reviews to check answers.
Prepare to fall asleep in his lectures. Also he is very unapproachable, and his tests are very in depth and specific. Wouldnt recommend.
Thank goodness OWL is apart of the grade!!! The exams were horrible and hardly like owl and the practice exams. I found studying to be pointless since he would put stuff on there we hardly covered. Lectures are boring and long and find that most students will work on other stuff in class.
Dr. Gallagher is a great professor and really knows what he is talking about. If you struggle with what you're learning, definitely go to office hours because he is more than willing to help you! Lectures can be long and drag on. Do the practice exams because those will really help you. The textbook is helpful if you are confused with concepts, etc
He is a good professor, really organized and pretty detailed for the most part during lecture. Lectures are pretty boring but there is iClicker questions each day that will give you extra points at the end of the semester. OWL assignments due each week that aren't difficult. You can do well without reading the book. Exams are difficult but doable.
Lecture is super boring. If you don't know the info already you'll probably end up reading the textbook for help. The OWLS are busywork but those and practice exams help on the actual tests. Clicker questions are the only reason I show up & he doesn't even click the right answer half the time. Overall, not super hard content, just the class sucks!
Worst professor I have ever had. Exams are nothing like his practice exams and his lectures are very boring. Be prepared to fall asleep in class and to teach everything to yourself. I will never take one of his classes again.
Dr. Gallagher is one of the best professors I have had, while I'll admit that his lectures are a bit dry at times, he is compassionate about the topic and very knowledgeable. If you do his practice exam and redo the homework assignments the tests are not that bad.
Ok i have to admit his last test is really hard, but he makes up for it with a curve! His lectures can be long, but he answers any questions you need. Do the homework every week and do the practice exams!! Im not the smart and Im getting an A
He knows the content very well, but he has a very hard time conveying his ideas to the students so they can learn.
He's clearly very intelligent and understands his topic well, but he has difficulty breaking it down to a level understandable by students. Test were HARD, his answer-key was not always even correct and the study guides often totally different from the exam. Lectures were boring but the clicker questions allowed for up to 1-2% extra credit
When lecturing he speaks to the board and doesn't give you enough time to answer clicker questions. Most people watched Netflix during class because it got so boring. I didn't think his study guilds matched the material on the exams. DO NOT take him if you don't have to, have fun nursing majors!
Gallagher is kind and cares about what he teaches, but his lectures are boring and long. He just reads the powerpoint that he puts on D2L, so going to lectures is pointless besides the clicker Qs, which he gives you 0.5 sec to answer. I didn't think his practice exams were ANYTHING like the actual exams. He's willing to help you during office hours
Very quiet man and hard to hear. If you skip class you will not pass. You are graded on iClicker questions. Tests are heard and long. Was okay in the beginning of the class and then stropped explaining things.
If you're not familiar with Ochem you will struggle with this class. Class is boring but it helped to print the notes and write along side them. Study guides were replicate of the tests, but he doesn't post all of the answers to them so it was difficult to know if you got the answer right.
If your a Nursing major, I would take this course somewhere else. Lectures are boring & long, so the only point of attending them is the clicker questions which he gives 0.5 seconds to answer. However, do the study guides; they help out on preparing for the exams.
He's one of the most boring lecture profs ever. people fall asleep all the time in class. the exams are really hard, the class average was barely ever passing. really smart and nice guy, but he just does not lecture effectively
Do the study guides and practice exams and you will be okay on exams. Sometimes he throws curve balls on exams, but overall they are just like the study guides. Very knowledgeable professor, but you may need to get extra help learning the material.
Lectures are extremely long and hard to pay attention to. You will need to read the book to learn everything because he doesn't explain anything well. Go to SI, and do the study guides, even though he does not post he full answer key. Try to take this class with another professor especially if you are a nursing major because it is hard to get an A.
He is obviously very knowledgeable about all the concepts but he has a really hard time breaking it down so that students can understand it. Content probably isn't actually that hard but he's very monotone and can't explain things the best. Seems like a caring professor who wants you to do well but could do better at conveying content to students
He cares about his students but in order to do well you need to read and teach yourself a lot of the content. SI sessions help and so does going to the chem tutors periodically for the online homework. If you are a freshman don't buy a clicker from the bookstore, get it off amazon for cheaper.
If you're taking this class it's because you have to not want to. Not a terrible class but not the best, just because it was difficult. Online homework due about 1/2 times a week that can take a few hours but super helpful. Read the book. Show up to class. Study hard and you will do great.
"I do not believe in multiple choice exams" k. I paid UWEC to teach myself for this course. Go to SI, do the homework, show up to lecture for clicker questions, and do his study guides. Wait to take it with Yang in the fall. Your GPA and sanity aren't worth it. Good luck :)
Have him for chem 105. Tends to dive deep into the subjects that are easy to grasp and just glazes over the harder topics. Gives a boat load of online hw so be prepared. Chem tutoring and study guid will help. Make sure to do the practice OWL problems before the exam (there is a practice setting on owl).
Willing to help!
I have Prof. G for Chem 105 Lect. He goes into a lot of detail on the basics that everyone should know by now, but brushes off the more difficult problems. Easy points for participating in iClicker but unfortunately you have to pay for that AND OwL subscription. Lots of OwL hw. However, Study Guides for exams are very similar to the real thing.
I hated this class. He had amazing study guide and nice slides, but i was teaching myself. Half the time you cant hear lectures or see what he writes on the white board for examples. I can see how he would be good in an advanced chem course, but for an intro I didnt learn anything. Everyone just did hw during lectures and class doubled exam day..
He is so nice! Lots of online homework through OWL but the homework helps a lot. Uses Iclicker for attendance. Class lecture kinda useless. Posts overhead slides on canvas. His exams aren't too hard and his exams are exactly like the practice exams. the final was also super similar to his past exams.
Dr. Gallagher is a good professor, but you don't want him for lower level classes. When covering our material during lectures, he would talk very briefly about what was expected on the test, and went into detail about things we didn't need to know (which he told us). He's too smart for low level classes and expects you to know the material already
Doesn't teach or give examples. Expects to just know stuff automatically. Talks in monotone voice
Had to drop class during COVID-19. He doesnt even teach you. He expects you to know things yourself and takes in a monotone voice. There is so much owl hw and the exams are difficult! Cant wait to take chem 105 with anyone but him. DONT TAKE!!!! Switch to online was confusing and he wasnt willing to teach us.
Really had a tough time with him during lab, his lecture isn't that bad if you can stay awake and keep up on the homework. He talks for way too long during lab and over-explains everything. Get ready to spend the whole time in the lab. You only get out of the lab early if you cut corners or you're willing to do more homework.
Grades everything for accuracy, good luck! I strongly disliked him. Doesnt respond to emails. Montone voice not interesting in helping.
Super caring guy in my opinion, so I am shocked he has such a low score here. He would always help with any questions I had in lab, and his grading was quite generous. I had covid and missed 3 labs, and Professor Gallagher was very accommodating and genuinely cared about my health.
Had to buy Mastering Chem: was glitchy, assignments didnt reflect lecture material. Lectures: sparse, learning expectations unclear. Normal course load crammed into way less lecture time due to social distancing. Exam difficulty varied by a lot, never knew what to study. HEAVY on graded HW, activities, quizzes that were extremely difficult.
Take this course with a different professor if you can. His in-person exams are insanely difficult. Not sure how he is about partial credit. His lectures are extremely boring and uninformative. His homework assignments do not come from anything you will learn in the textbook or in lecture. You won't know how to study for any of the exams.
Dr. Gallagher is a nice guy and if you talk with him he is willing to help you learn but I would recommend not taking Biochem with him. I got an A in Orgo 2 and I have no idea what he is teaching half of the time. Super lecture heavy that doesn't line up with the book or mastering chemistry. He changed our online exam to in-person last minute too.
