This prof is terrible. He started off by saying 'if you have any questions, your first point of contact should be your TAs, not me. I am only here to direct the course'. He doesn't let us use computers but talks so fast and doesn't put slides up. The content is boring too.
Professor Steele seemed very passionate about the course material, and he organized and presented the content effectively. I learned a lot from his class, and it has helped me tremendously with my upper-year MIT courses. Prof. Steele is also easy on the eyes.
Amazing professor - most interesting material so far in MIT and has a real passion for the content. The TAs were well prepared and the course load was fair.
At first he had a hard time adjusting to our bigger class, but slowly he became more comfortable and turned out being a pretty funny prof... I'd recommend him especially for upper year MIT courses where the class sizes are smaller, so you actually get to know him.
he had no clue how to lecture to a larger class size, so he would speak quietly. seemed to drag on the lectures as long as possible because he didnt have enough material to talk about/would always repeat himself. my TA was absent once and he filled in and he was better one on one but just doesnt know how to teach a class.
He is young and was clearly still trying to get his footing in a large classroom setting. I've heard he is much better in a smaller classroom situation but have not taken his smaller sized courses. He really enjoyed saying the same thing in different words over and over. Not horrible, not great.
I took Steele's Cold War/Post America class and really enjoyed it. Although it was probably my most difficult class content wise, it was my favourite course because he was very knowledgeable and the information was really interesting. He also gave great feedback. Definitely recommend taking his courses ? he's brilliant!
Steele is an amazing prof, i actually enjoyed going to his classes, he makes the content interesting. You can also tell he is extremely knowledgeable but without being egotistical. HIGHLY recommend.
Prof. Steele quickly became one of my favourite profs. He's knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and very well-spoken. I also found him quite approachable and helpful outside of class hours. Overall, great prof and great class.
This prof will open up your mind to insane new concepts that, if you give the time to think about, will change the world around you. I have taken 4 courses with him and it was the highlight of my University experience. You MUST put in the effort, as the material he looks at will not just come to you. That's MIT though. Expand your mind
Nervous in large classrooms, but knowledgeable and clear. Reiterates important points to keep in mind for exams. Will broaden your perspective on technologies and society. Still trying to figure out what his tat is of (inside l arm). His ta Brianne would be a sick lecturer (funny and insanely smart). Exams make sense if you do the readings b4.
awesome. inspired you too learn more. great/intriguing lecturer.
He is down to earth as hell. He makes excellent points and is very passionate, and he presents his courses in a organized fashion. He is also great at encouraging class involvement. Really enjoyed his classes!!
Very Monotone, Awkward, and Read from a script. Hsted going to lectures. Went to 2 of his classes and ended with a mark in the mid 70's.
I love this man. I've had him for multiple classes and he always kept me engaged. Very knowledgeable and personable outside of class.
Too many readings, seems like a nice guy (has a good sense of humour) but sometimes things were unclear.
Hottieeeeee, LOVE THIS MAN
He sometimes forgets that we all aren't quite as brilliant as him and find it difficult to grasp some of his ideas. However, if you ask him to clarify, he is more than willing to. Try not to be intimidated and just approach him. Extremely interesting and knowledgeable, not to mention easy on the eyes.
Brilliant professor! I can't stress how interesting and well organized his lectures are. He is charismatic and nice to, although at first he can be a little bit daunting to approach.
Amazing. I love this professor. He is extremely intelligent and down-to-earth. He made me consider ideas and issues in ways I never would have before. He also helped me become a better thinker and writer.
Really interesting course material. Some concepts may be abstract and hard to grasp at first but Steele does an amazing job at explaining in lecture. A couple of responses, midterm, and final. Easily my favourite course and prof of the semester.
Well this guy was certainly interesting. Everyone in my class seemed to be captivated by the melodramatic, disjointed nonsense that he passed off as lectures. Was incredibly awkward in lecutres and like most academics who specialize in post modernism, a lot of what he said amounted to pseudo-intellectual drivel. Not a particularly hard class tho.
Overrated. Completely mediocre as a professor. Course content is abstract to the point of complete incoherence. Thinks everything he says is profound, yet for the most part his speeches as a cheesy overly dramatic element to them. Really don't understand why some students like him so much. Learned nothing concrete/tangible during the whole course.
His teaching style isn't for everyone. The concepts he teaches are incredibly difficult to grasp. You absolutely MUST engage with the material as openly as possible. It will be frustrating at times, but once you have taken the time to TRULY understand everything this man says, it is a rewarding experience unmatched by any course I've ever taken.
The first lecture of 2500 i was completely confused and nervous. This professor's teaching style is very abstract, however it is obvious he is brilliant and well spoken. He is very intelligent, passionate and challenged the class to open their minds to course material. I ended with a great mark and would definitely take his classes again.
Interesting, inspiring, and passionate. Difficult and slightly intimidating to talk to at first, but very helpful when needed. Steele explains some difficult and complicated course material in ways that are clear. I highly recommend taking a smaller class with him like MIT 3218. Eye-opening courses.
Warren Steele is one professor that every student in MIT should have at least once (most do in 2500). His classes are always engaging, his prose is thoughtful and leaves most classes hushed in reverence. A smaller course with him is a must, as his specified content on the Cold War is profound.
Amazing and inspiring professor. While does not seem immediately personable, he is very kind, helpful, and kind of fun to talk to. I hang onto his every word. Take race, post-war, capitalism, or crash landscape.
The terms that he introduces in lectures are easy to understand and grasp as he offers many examples to help you understand it better. He is a terrific prof that goes in dept with his course content and makes class enjoyable. He is a fair marker.
Warren Steele is hands down the best professor I had in my four years in FIMS. His teachings in this class were absolutely fundamental to my development as a student of media studies. His focus on the philosophies behind media was instrumental to my learning in FIMS. Take his classes, and listen when he talks.
He is absolutely amazing. My academic crush for sure. I had 3 classes with him and i hung onto every word. Such a profound, deep, sensitive intelligent human being. Extremely fair marker. Great guy. Everyone needs Warren Steele as a professor in their life at least once. He's also a badass activist.
Brilliant and well versed professor. Though the language he uses in his lectures is poetic and nice thought provoking, it's easy to get lost and confused about what he means. He needs to recognise his audience are mostly 19 year olds and ought to use more appropriate understandable language. Side note; Warren Steele is a hottie
Very eloquent and well spoken. He sounds like he's reading an essay, but the material is extremely interesting. You definitely have to pay attention in lecture, but he always summarizes himself well. Good professor, but lectures can get a bit dry and tedious
Warren Steele is an amazing teacher. If you can PLEASE take his Race and ethnicity class. My eyes have never been more open and I have never been more interested in a class before. He is so passionate that you ultimately become extremely passionate as well. You literally never want to miss a class because you want to learn everything.
The impact this professor has had on my growth as not only a student but as a human being is indescribable. Take this course. It will change your life
Amazing and life changing
Warren Steele's is an amazingly inspirational professor. I can't help but hold on to every word. Very passionate.
One of the best profs you will ever have at Western. Very intelligent and philosophical. Seems intimidating but it so nice. Walk away from every lecture very inspired.
I'm one of the very few people who wasn't absolutely in love with Warren Steele. I really wish he wouldn't script his lectures and that he would speak in a more organic and understandable way... the content he's teaching isn't nearly as fancy or cryptic as he makes it. The way he lectures just makes him come off a bit pretentious.
I personally don't understand the hype behind this prof. He reads a paper rather than doing the lecture off the cuff and he sounds extremely monotone. The content of the course was interesting at times but he seemed a bit like a conspiracy theorist. He's extremely pessimistic and offers no solutions to the problems he proposes, seeming hopeless.
Great prof. Interesting lectures and sparks much interest in students.
LOVED the class I took with Warren. Very interesting material that he explains in a way that made every class feel like a Black Mirror episode. Two essays and 2 exams (both of which are fair). Highly recommend.
Ugh, hated this course/Warren. Boring and confusing lectures about why technology sucks, despite him owning an iPhone and being just like the rest of us. A wee bit hypocritical ....
Puts me to sleep every class, but fair grader and has interesting topics. Can grab the slides outside of class, but having notes for the tangents he goes on in lecture helps you understand what he's saying. Some reading but not too bad. Can skip
Awful, awful, awful lecture. He reads off the slides the ENTIRE time and gives minimal breaks. Very dry when speaking even though the information is good, super negative man and seems as if everything is bad and wrong. Very hypocritical man but has straight views on things, no changing his mind.
The most depressing 2 hrs of my life. Not bad tho
I've had Warren twice. Admittedly, in second year, it took me a while to get used to his style. He presented material in a poetic, yet academic and ominous, way. Now, in 4th year, I understand. He may not seem outwardly enthusiastic, but IMO, he exudes empathy, thoughtfulness, and ethics in his teaching style and chosen material. Take his seminar!
Warren is a very intelligent and caring man. Frankly, anyone who does not see the relevance of this course should not be in MIT. I don't mind that he reads off of a script because it shows that he puts thought into each word that he chooses. Words can be very important. Loved the class- eye-opening and impacted my life in a significant way.
I thought his lectures were very dry and hard to follow. if you don't go to class you won't know what's happening because his slides are just pictures. the content is really negative and I don't think ive ever seen him smile. I would definitely not take another class like this with him.
Warren Steele is one of the best professors within the Faculty of Information and Media Studies. He challenges his students to think more critically about issues that truly matter and have an impact on our lives. His electives are based on discussions rather than straight content, are engaging, and impact us beyond the classroom. Warren is a GEM
Do not base your opinions on Steele from 2500, where he really thrives is the upper year courses. They are so intriguing and I constantly walk away thinking about the world in a new lens. They are discussion based and the readings assigned are really gripping and don't feel like textbooks. Steele is an amazing prof
Western is so lucky to have Steele teach, he should be giving TED Talks and writing the next Nobel Prize winning novel. He is too smart for us university kids, but anyone who has had a class with him is incredibly fortunate to hear even one of his lectures in their lifetime. Take his (upper year) classes, it'll change your life.
Warren is my favourite professor in MIT. His 2500 classes are probably the driest, but I still found them great. Warren really excels in upper-year courses. His classes are probably one of the top things that I miss about UWO. Listen, do the readings (which are awesome) and concentrate while he talks. You'll be mindblown!
Any chance you have to take a class from Warren Steele - ESPECIALLY 3935 - take it. He's absolutely incredible; so inspirational and smart. Being taught by him is an absolute privilege because he WILL change your life and your perspectives on the world.
By far the most interesting and thoughtful professors I've encountered in FIMS. His smaller classes always create the best discussion environments, and makes me never want to take another big lecture classes. Warren encourages new and interesting ideas, he values personal perspectives as they contribute to class discussion, and is truly kind.
Amazing lecturer who really cares about the course topic. I learned so much in this class. His exam was very straightforward. Slightly tough essay marker but if you put in time you will do fairly well. Easy participation marks.
Next to impossible to get over a 75 in this class. Steele is rude when you reach out with questions and responds like you are stupid. Grading criteria is nonexistent which makes it impossible to do well. Additionally, the TA's have to get permission to give students over an 80, which makes it impossible to do well.
This prof is very passionate about his content, however, his lectures are very heavy. He posts podcast like lectures with no visuals that are around 45 minutes each, so it's difficult to stay engaged. Along with the long lectures, the weekly readings are A LOT. 1 week's reading was a 300-page novel making it difficult to keep up with other classes.
worst lectures I have ever encountered. Nothing like listening to countless long voice clips that sounds straight out of a Shakespeare script. This guy speaks in tongues and half of the battle is translating his sentences out of the awful coded way he speaks. This course does not to be as hard as he is making it, absolutely awful experience.
I had Warren Steele for MIT 2000 and it was probably the worst class I have had so far. He makes the simplest of things the most complicated and makes English sound like a completely different language. He also changes his syllabus about 5 times during the semester. Prepare yourself for a lot of readings, and his marking sucks.
Assigns entire books as readings and gives discouraging feedback. Feels impossible to do well
Let's be honest. He's probably one of the most boring professors we've ever got. He needs to learn how to make his lectures or study material interesting.
Only comes out of the void occasionally to teach his class and answer his emails
lectures are very hard to understand, uses very complex language. They are not hard concepts but the way he explains it makes it very confusing to grasp. Also there are so many readings and the tests are graded quite harshly.
Took the history of communication in 2020 online and it was terrible . All lectures were in podcast format with no visuals except a "PowerPoint" that literally just had 3 slides with one quote on each. He sounded like he was reading an entire academic paper each week with the most complex language that made have a thesaurus open for each lec.
If you didn't understand and emailed him for help, he gave no effort to explain it further for you, the lectures were voice recordings with no visuals (or even subtitles) which made it so hard to understand or retain anything, and the content was unnecessarily confusing. Marking was unfairly hard and prof showed 0 interest in his students' success.
Steele was a tough grader based on vague instruction. His lectures were painful, hard to understand, and wordy. In communication he was blunt and kind of rude. His course wasn't interesting and he wasn't personable.
This was one of my favourite courses Ive ever taken. Not only was the class well structured, planned, and executed, but Dr. Steele was insightful and passionate towards the subject. I found the assignments and course work relevant and enjoyed the class overall.
While I didn't interact with the professor directly, I do think his online format didn't really set students up for success. The 'podcast' format was really ineffective (but I will admit they would probably be interesting in-person). The only written papers had weird prompts. And the exam was set up in a way that 1 mistake could screw you over.
He literally made it impossible to improve on assignments bc he didn't provide feedback, just told you what you did wrong. Not a good lecturer - he used very advanced language at a rapid pace via PODCAST?? Concepts were unclear and hard to grasp. Also, assigns full novels to read for one week?!? Also not helpful when you ask him for help.
Professor Steele is an incredibly intelligent and intellectual man. I will remember this course for the rest of my life. He really challenges you to think in a different way and question your current beliefs/assumptions. I highly recommend taking his courses if you are serious about learning.
I'll go to my grave saying that anyone who doesn't like Steele just can't (or won't) keep up with his content. He's incredibly intelligent and articulate and frankly one of FIMS best profs. If you've never had him, ignore the reviews, go to the lecture, and just make the judgement for yourself
get out if you still can
Warren Steele is one of the best professors MIT can provide at Western. He is clearly passionate and well informed about his areas of expertise and is always willing to discuss and have opinions challenged in class. Though some topics of the class can be difficult to navigate, it just shows how much care and time they each deserve. GREAT professor!
The absolute worst lecturer I've ever had. His slides are literally just pictures with some quotes. He talks way too fast and uses extremely sophisticated language that no one can understand. I did not understand anything in this course and it's practically impossible to keep up with him when taking notes. Everyone in his class literally hates it.
Agh, he definitely expanded my worldview but I felt so defeated by this class. I submitted all my grad school applications 2 months early specifically because he's such a tough marker and I didn't want my grade in this class to show up. I would take his class as a discovery credit but oof, it felt like he didn't want students to succeed.
I think the MIT 2000 class is boring no matter who teaches it, take anything else from him and you won't be disappointed. He is the smartest and most insightful prof I have ever had and I will take the teachings from his class with me forever. He is extremely passionate and I can't recommend a professor more then him.
A real gem of a professor, I don't often find that classes change my life very often but he is truly one of the most intelligent and insightful teachers I have ever had. I would recommend him to every single person if I could. If you took MIT 2000 with him don't let it discourage you, the class is just boring.
This is just not a fun course at all. I generally like most profs I have, but I can't think of single positive for this guy. Judging by the way he has good ratings for the other classes he teaches, it seems like he just hates teaching this course, and it shows.
Warren had very dense lectures, though his content was still interesting. I found the readings were unhelpful, but remembering the author's name mattered. The TAs do not come to the lectures, which meant many essays and midterms where you references concepts in class were sometimes marked wrong. The professor was good at correcting this though.
Honestly, the lectures got a bit long and boring, but I will always come back to the thing I learned in this class. I feel like that's really important now.
Profesor Steele is very knowledgeable when it comes to lecture content but, the delivery of the content is extremely boring. He often cancels class towards the end of the semester and says he will posts video of the content but does not do so for a couple days to weeks later. When you email him do not expect a detailed answer, just email your TA.
The class it self was not great and that was reflected in the content and how the course was taught. Feedback on assignments was not great and felt like there was little room for improvement.
This was one of my favourite 2nd year MIT courses. Personally I found the content extremely interesting even though the readings and lectures were long. Prof Warren speaks slow, but it's not boring - more like a narrator. Its like I'm watching a documentary during his lectures, and his speed is the perfect pace for taking notes. W course & W prof.
Don't really get the hate this dude gets. He's a pretty good lecturer, probably one of the best I've had so far. Lectures and readings were really interesting and quite profound. The criteria for assignments were pretty loose, so the marking by the TAs was pretty tough, but overall I would recommend this course.
I don't understand why there are any negative reviews about professor Steele. His lectures are extremely interesting, they can sometimes drag on but he makes the content engaging. TA's were very hard markers but it may be because the assignment guidelines weren't that detailed. I looked forward to this lecture every week.
He is a very good professor, and the knowledge taught during the course is also very useful. However, some lectures during the course tend to be lengthy. Exam scores greatly depend on the TA. Having a good TA can be more advantageous in achieving high grades.
Warren Steele is such an incredible prof, and the 2000 course (despite some reviews) might be my favourite course I've taken in MIT so far. Warren is knowledgable and efficient when delivering his content. If people say that 2000 is boring (i found the content sooo interesting), I can't wait to see how much better Warren is in upper year classes :)
Warren is an amazing professor. While he does speak very sullenly, the information in his lectures is incredibly interesting and he presents ideas in a full, well rounded way. To do well in this course you must go to class and take notes, but the information is easily disgestible.
I think he was a great prof for 2000. You must attend lectures for this course as the slides provide little to no information or context (often just photos). Be prepared as he speaks in a very monotone voice which is something he acknowledges. Despite this once you get a feel for the content the lectures are enjoyable.
The content of the course is interesting but the way the lecture is delivered is very boring. The professor is very wordy and speaks extremely monotone so it's easy to disengage and not enjoy the class. You must attend the lectures as the slides posted convey very little information.
You either love or hate taking his classes. No in between. Usually those who claim to hate W.S. can't grapple with the fact that engagement with the material is a must. You WILL struggle his class if you try to passively float through. Otherwise, he's a 'no bs' prof. Go to all the lectures and critically read all the readings and you'll be good.
Warren Steele is an amazing and intelligent professor. He is extremely helpful when it comes to questions about assignments and he's very nice overall. I leave every lecture feeling so much more knowledgeable. Participation isn't marked but you absolutely CANNOT skip his lectures, and make sure to be paying close attention throughout all of class.
Professor Steele is an insanely intelligent individual and gives some very interesting lectures. I do believe at times the content can be a bit hard to grasp but he is always open to questions. You cannot coast in this class and must attend every lecture. The content taught in his class is very informative and relevant.
