Well organized. No curve. Good teacher overall
lectures are good, tests are fair, quizzes are easy.
You may think it is an easy class but come test time you are dumbfounded and for two semesters in a row he has failed 50% of his class. Don't underestimate him. No curve
good explaination. Very helpful. Many midterms so that you can make up if you do not do well at the beginning.
One of the best matrix theorists and nicest teachers around. He is always available in office hours to answer homework questions. His lectures are very clear and organized. Exams are difficult, but fair. Dr. So, if you are reading this, thanks!
Dr. So has very nice personality and always patient when answering questions. Quizes are very easy, tests are triky and he won't give you enough time to finish it. However, the final is not that hard.
I will never take another class from him. Check his home page. For 3 years, in all of his classes, 40-50% get D's and F's. Tons of formulas to memorize. Closed book, closed notes. Nice man, poor teacher.
if you are CS major do not take him, waist of time
He was helpful during his office hour. He doesn't lecture everything in the text however students were required to know them. Tests were extremely hard and long. No make-up test and no curve or extra credit. I won't take him again if possible...
He gives clear and organized lectures, very helpful and nice during office hours. He's a friendly person, fair, and easiest Linear Algebra teacher.
I wouldn't say poor teacher, but neither a good teacher. He is very strict at grading. All or nothing. Tons of formulas to remember. Closed books, closed notes. Give him a shot if you want, but I recommend the other teacher, Rocha.
I would avoid him if I can. He doesn't cover the materials very well and expect you to know them in the exam. Good personality but not a good teacher. This is the only class in my file I ever got an 'F'
Don't take him...he never give partial (good person; bad teacher) ( has fun tricking you on the tests) points..85% of class flunking lectures are organized quiz every week.no make up exam...if i could do it again i would have take another Prof.
Since he sees subject as easy, the class *should* as well. Doesn't explain examples to well. Doesn't discuss everything in class which is in HW and on TEST! Slides in tricks to topics which are confusing enough. He is a very nice guy on the plus side but I would stay away from this teacher.
Do not take this guy, hes a really bad teacher. Merciless when grading test. Doesnt handout solutions to homeworks. Doesnt really explain the examples thoroughly.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL. Class average on midterms were 58%, yet he didn't curve the class. More than half the class failed this course! He lectures too fast without clarifying the concepts. HORRIBLE PROFFESSOR!
nice person! helpful esp in office hours!
You know pretty much everything in the class but the tests are designed to screw you. Out of five questions for mid terms you have to have 4.5 right to make it. Pretty unfair.

do not ever take this class. teacher can not teach what so ever. if u want to do well in class, dont show up to hear him yap and just learn out of the book by ur self. his lectures are more confusing then the book. if i can give him 0's i would.
Dont even have words to describe the ways that this professor has to make students life miserable. he is the worst professor i have ever had. his mid terms are so called 5 questn but each of them has 5 sub parts which makes it 25 questns in 50 mins. 90% of his class is failing but he still doesnt wanna curve the grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR ..
Homework and quizzes are easy but tests are tricky. You must pass tests to pass the class. If you like logic and proofs then you might do well. He's good at explaining things but throws complicated questions on the tests. No 3x5 cards allowed for tests. Also, he doesn't curve even though most of the students are failing the class.
One of the hardest teachers I've had. You have to work very hard to get even a passing grade in the class. He does NOT curve. HW & Quiz every week make the class even more of a pain. His justification for hard tests is "We have to raise the standard" and he does this at the cost of failing half his class consitently. Avoid him at all costs!
dude...take someone else.
A teacher should TEACH not regurgitate information from the book -- he talks like the book word for word which doesn't help at all. His examples in explaining theorems and ideas are also terrible. His grading/tests are STRICT and unpredictable most of the class failed. Quizzes are like 2 questions you either do really good or u fail. Dont take him
Nice guy. Very good teacher. He's a master. Gives very little HW. Gives a few simple quizzes. Gives good credit for HW. The problem... his tests. You'll look at them and say, "Where did this come from?" They are pretty tough. If you do well on tests, you may do ok. You need to triple the amount of HW he gives to prepare.
He tries to be helpful, and even gave extra tutorials on the software we used for projects. It is true that the difficulty of homework and projects is much less than that of his tests, so be forewarned. He made an effort to get to know our names, so I think he is trying. I learned a lot in his class.
nice guy but there are ezier prof out there. No cheat sheets (memorize). no curves but may allow retest/avg if class avg is abysmal. Decent partial creds. HW worth 12% so do it. Must do ALOT more than assigned hw if u want to do well on exam (need lots of outside-the-box-thinking). 40% final. Don't take unless u can devote all your time to it.
not that bad of a class
PLEASE DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE OTHER COMMENTS THIS PROFESSOR MIGHT HAVE AS BEING A NICE GUY BECAUSE THAT WILL NOT HELP YOU PASS THE COURSE. HE KNOWS THE MATERIAL BUT HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT TEACHING A CLASS. WHEN MORE THAN HALF THE CLASS IS FAILING INCLUDING THOSE WHO GO EVERYDAY TO CLASS THEN THE TEACHER HAS TO TAKE ACTION AND BLAME IT ON HIS
this teacher is terrible. I went to class everyday and averaged a C+ on the tests, he then tells us to study the old final that he has posted on his website. The day of the final comes and less than 1/4 of the old final was on the actual final. Oh and the final is worth 60%.As everyone says, knows the material, but does NOT know how to teach AT ALL
Stay away from this guy. The average scores on our tests are always around 50% and he refuses to grade on a curve. He gives out and collects hw, but the tests are WAY harder than any of the homework problems or anything we've done in class. No matter how many times I ask him he never tells me what to study for a test. So it's always a surprise.
Avg score on tests was 50%, half the class was failing, doesn't curve. I normally don't fail... and this was my first. Stay away from him.
I thought he was a great teacher! His lectures were clear, his homework wasnt too bad but the only default are his test! His test are extremely hard! This teacher makes you work for your grade. Yes the averages on all our test are 51% and I believe his grading scale is not very fair but beside his test I mean he really is a great teacher.
So it's not that he doesn't know how to teach, I just think that he's wayyy hard for anyone who's not a math major, including me. I mean he throws out tricky test questions which throws off even the smartest students in class. Take my advice and avoid him if you can, take it at a JC or with someone else or most likely you will regret taking him!
You'll have to MEMORIZE everything. He does not curve, even if 85% of the class is failing. He crams material in for lectures, but never has time to go over 1-2 hwk problems. Expect long lines during his office hours. Expect to study at least 12 hours per week. The chances of still getting an F is fairly high even if you've studied thoroughly.
Extremely difficult and unfair professor. His exams are very hard and do not come from the book or the HW. He failed more than half of the class. He simply does not prepare you pass his exams, extremely unfair and you will regret ever taking him. Stay away at all costs.
Don't take him EVER. Even if he's the only 1 open for that semester. It will really hurt your GPA if you even pass. TEST AVERAGES WERE 50%. NO CURVE. Tests are 70% of total grade. Even if you can do all the homework with speed, you'll still fail all his tests. You would have to have a photographic memory to get B's. He needs to curve or get fired
Makes his own exams and they are not from the book or his lectures. Fails 80 percent of his class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Avoid at all costs! I am a 4.0 student with going for a math minor and I am struggling big ttime to get a decent grade in this class. Exams make up 76% of your grade and the average score on his exams looms around 65-70. His response? "Study harder." The issue isn't study habits, it is the professor.
He is difficult, but not unfair. He drops 3 low homework scores, and your lowest exam score. No notes on exams, but allows calculators. I think he teaches linear algebra in a very practical way for engineers. It's a difficult subject by itself, i think his teaching approach was good. I just wish I'd payed attention in class more.
This is not the easiest class but it definitely isn't impossible. His in class notes and homework prep you well for the tests. Yes, the tests are challenging, but they are not impossible since he tells you ahead of time what will be on it. I studied and did all my work and got an A-. I would definitely recommend taking his class
this is a good teacher but he really goes for the jugular when it comes to test grades and his grading breakdown, his test averages are always less than 65% and his final is worth 40% and his tests are both worth 25%, you have to be a super student to pass his classes, my advice, dont sign up for a class with this teacher
Prof. So is one of the best teachers I've ever had! Very professional, class is taught at a good pace, and he drops 3 lowest hws and lowest midterm. You can tell he enjoys his job and loves to teach. I am very glad I took his class and I encourage others to do the same! Tests are pretty straight forward if you do well on hws. Projects were easy.
He was fantastic. So enthusiastic and encouraged students to ask questions and participate during class. Homeworks were very useful and he would go over answers to homeworks when handing them back. This was for a small graduate class (~12 students), so I'm not sure if he does this for larger classes. Overall, I looked forward to coming to class.
WOW! Best prof at SJSU -- hands down! He is clear with projects/lectures. Average score was 65% or under for exams, but that's because they didn't try on the homework or come to class. UNDERSTAND HOMEWORK and exams are EASY. Drops lowest 3 hwks and test. Final is 40% and easiest test of all. Note: He does not curve. AT ALL. EVER.
Obviously enthusiastic about teaching. He'll remember your name by the end of the semester. This class is a not a walk in a park nor is it hard. No cheat sheet, but the test questions are ridiculous so you'll have to study. A++++ Would take again.
Not a great professor. His accent can be difficult to understand. Says, "What?" way too often. He doesn't give students enough preparation for exams. His tests are often too difficult (avg score 60%). Students expected to memorize all proofs for final.
his tests are hard but he drops the lowest midterm.
So is a great professor. His lecture is very organized and well done. If you want a good grade, please attend his class, take notes, and pay attention. Also, keep up with your homework and make sure you understand all the problem. The test is not too hard, but not too easy if you don't study bcuz there will be lot of materials. I happy with an A-
Takes effort but not impossible. Make sure to take notes, attend class, and do all hw. Tests make up big portion but 1 mimdterm dropped. Just make sure to understand the hw and you'll pass (tests arn't impossible if you know the stuff - somewhat simpler than hw). Finals 50% of grade can make or break you so just need to review but not impossible. B
Awful, just awful. Horrible incomprehensible accent. He rarely understands your questions and his answers are worse. The tests are impossible to do well on, and he doesn't curve or anything. Don't tell yourself "I'll be fine, I'll study on my own" I did and here I am. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE AN OPTION, ANYONE ELSE!
Tests are INSANE. Class isn't curved, and the tests are designed to fail you if you don't have a photographic memory of every single theorem or proof. The tests are extremely abstract, so the homework is useless in preparing you in any way. So is a nice guy, but avoid taking linear algebra with him because he does not prepare you for his own exams.
So teaching is very organized. If you take good notes and do well on the homework, exam will be easy. Just make sure to attend his class and sit in front to get all the note down. If any question, ASK...
Do not listen to the negative comments below. Wasin So's exams are one of the EASIEST math exams I have taken at SJSU . He literally puts some of the EASIEST examples on his exams and doesn't try to trick you. Although I'm currently taking his class, I'm confident I will be getting a B or higher.
This class is horrible. He does teach ok, but does not prepare you for tests. I missed one negative signs and got deducted 8 points. You can show you understand the topic, but one mistake and you are screwed. Class average is a 59% which shows how bad he is.
He has a very thick accent but he is funny and always says "Isn't it?". His exams are rather straight forward, tough course but reasonable. No cheat sheets on exams which kinda stinks.
He is an alright professor. He grades pretty strictly: no curves ever, no cheat sheets, expects you to REALLY know the subject matter. His lectures are always very organized and he will respond to emails quickly. Although his tests can be pretty hard, he does drop the lowest midterm! Review calc I, calc II, study hard and you'll be fine.
Lives up to his reputation. Abstract lectures, covers material but doesn't give clear applications. Lectures move quickly, always seems anxious and pushes himself through too much content not giving students much chance to effectively absorb the material. No exam prep and no forgiveness. Historically has a 40-50% fail rate and 30-40% getting a C.
Dating back to the mid-2000's 50% of the class does not pass. So is a relic that needs to be uprooted from his tenure status. His exams are what matter when it comes to grading and they are based 90% on the lectures, you will find no help from the books or assigned homework. I'm a 3.6+ student and failing this class. Think twice before taking So.
The lectures are really organized. Homework is graded in quarters and due before each midterm. His accent is hilarious and worth listening to. Tests are fair, all questions were presented in either the homework or lecture. Understand the concept and approach and you will pass. No curve, though he drops the lowest midterm.
He is a good teacher, and explains topics clearly and relevance. Don't skip class, and do the homework, and you should get a good grade.
I liked him a lot for calculus 3. He's extremely clear about the material, very quick to fix his own mistakes, and encourages questions. The lowest midterm score out of 3 is dropped, so you'll be fine if you bomb one by some mishap. He has an odd charm. Clearly passionate for the topic and wants you to not only do well, but appreciate the content.
Hes a solid teacher and very enthusiastic, but you need to work
Hands down, the best math teacher I've had at sjsu. He's so enthusiastic and makes lectures fun. I took him over the summer & everything was super fast paced but he made it clear what would be on the test and what not. You have to put in time though, to actually study for his midterm and understand every concept thoroughly. super accessible!
Gave good feedback on tests but made students feel dumb for asking questions. Make sure you attend all the lectures because he doesn't put his lecture notes online.
Prof. So is incredibly enthusiastic and the classroom atmosphere is always amazing. He explains concepts and solves sample problems. Yes, the class is lecture heavy but its enjoyable as well.
Professor So is a very good in terms of lecture; along with the lecture notes he prepares. He's also very helpful during office hours in terms of the further clarification of concepts, and explanations to specific homework and test questions. Math 129B itself is hard as nails due to the proofs, and the heavy abstraction of the concepts.
I took So's 129A class over summer. I thought it was very straightforward. Homework is optional and instead you have projects done with MathLab. I recommend this class completely!
A stressful study grind. He gives only a few problems in class, but these problems are a major far cry from what he covers in class + on the midterms. Literally half of the class is struggling and receiving poor grades! Also, no curve! How do you expect us to learn and do well when we're worried about our grades?!
If you're looking to get a grade higher than a C in this class, look for another professor.
I think(and as many have pointed out)he is an extremely difficult teacher. While attendance is not necessary(about half of the class usually disappears after the first mid term), I highly recommend going to class and 100% say you should attend office hours. His courses are not easy regardless of the subject but he is extremely accessible to help.
Really helpful, he gives good examples and explains everything really clearly, the homework and practice tests are extremely helpful, over all very fair and if you pay attention and do the work there shouldn't be a problem
Very good lecturer. Records lectures if you miss class or need to go back. Very test heavy (test and quizzes are 90% of your grade) but if you study and do the optional homework you should be fine on the tests. Quizzes are very easy.
Gives out quizzes almost every week. They're not too bad as long as you do the homework. The tests are pretty hard.
Dr. So is a great math professor who truly enjoys what he teaches, and it shows in his lectures. Your grade is mostly dictated by quizzes and tests (including the final), but if you go to class and pay attention, do the homework, and (my suggestion) do textbook problems for test review/extra practice, you'll be fine.
Generally a good teacher. Very test heavy class though. Tests and quizzes make up 90% of your grade (and the tests are very difficult, the quizzes however are very easy.) Optional homework. So does make class fun though
Very good professor. Exams are difficult so make sure you truly understand the material. Partial credit on exam is only on the answer, if part a is wrong, dont expect partial credit on b and c. All topics covered in lecture. Make sure to take notes. Very open to helping in OH. put in the work you'll pass. Able to easily explain complex ideas
This has gone wrong. Although professor had made such great lecture and material where I could do well on the homework, he gave me the wrong final grade, because he discounted a lot of assignments delaying my graduation plan. This hurts me now.
Homework is not too much or hard, two tests are harder than homework. He doesn't curve! No matter the class average score high or low. The second test is only two weeks before final. If you think the first two tests are little bit hard than your except, the final exam is extremely hard. Prepareing to spent much more time than other classes.
Don't take his classes. His material is good but he never curves as well as never allow to use cheatsheet. Homeworks are a lot but they do not help much for your exam. He feels very easy but the grades are not.
This is a terrible professor at SJSU. He did not even know the answers of hw when students asked but he gave a lot of hw. Exams were hard and covered a lot of stuffs. Exam 1 was right before the spring break and exam 2 2 was right before the final. He did not even spend a day to review the exams. Tough grader ever!
Nice guy, but as a professor he's terrible. Tests are closed book/note, he expects you to memorize like 7-8 chapters worth of material and regurgitate it on exam day. Goes WAY too fast, we were doing like 2-3 sections per lecture. Midterm averages reached as low as 47%, still refused to curve. Weekly quizzes with 1-2 problems, no partial credit.
He respects his student's time and none of the tests felt like we weren't taught what to do. The course's difficulty can be attributed to the difficulty of the content, not the professor. You can tell he knows his stuff and is passionate and wants the students to be just as knowledgeable and passionate.
Really cares about his students and wants them to do good in his class. I went to his office hours weekly and he helped me understand what I was confused about. Material is hard but professor does his best to teach you. Makes lectures fun. Weekly quizzes forced me to keep up with studying. Tests are hard but he lets you replace your lowest test.
Great professor! His lectures go a bit fast at times, but they're fun, engaging, and to the point. The structure of the class is very clear and he is easy to reach in and out of class. The exams and quizzes aren't too bad and they're a lot like the study guides. Cares about the subject and his students!
Dr. So is an overall good prof. Energetic and kind, bit of a thick accent. His class is made up of HW every 2-3 weeks, weekly quizzes, 3 midterms, and one final (replaces your lowest midterm score). He is always willing to answer questions and explain. Make sure to read the textbook and study outside of class. No late assignments accepted.
Funny at times, nice accent. Grades HW thoroughly (correct answer + work), 3-5 hrs of HW every 2 weeks. Quizzes are scheduled, in-class, 2-3 easy questions. 2 midterms + final can be hard, but there are no surprises as to the material covered. Late work not accepted (he's lenient if you mess this up once). Straight-forward math class.
The professor gives out way too much homework for what is covered in class and only gives you a short amount of time before the homework is due. Homework assignments are around 5 questions, but each question has several parts which adds up. The professor grades for correctness on homework assignments too, so good luck taking this class.
Teaches well and answers questions but hard grading; make sure to pay attention and attend class. No notes on tests; lots of memorization. Treat this as two classes with the amount of studying.
Even though he's very open to help during office hours, Dr. So makes his tests super hard and does not allow a cheat sheet. Exam 1 was right before Spring Break and Exam 2 was a week before the final. To make matters worse, he does not curve regardless of the high or low. IDK how he expects us not to be uptight when we are worried about our grades.
My deepest condolences to you all if you take Wasin So. Whenever you see his name on the courses that he is/will be teaching, I just want to say good luck with your future endeavors. Whenever you do his homework or take his exams, you depart your life on the spot. He will trap you around the corners and never let you escape. Instant path to Heaven.
Dr. So may be accessible outside of class, but he teaches the most basic concepts during lectures and his exams are crazy hard with no cheat sheet. The averages on the two midterms were 56.53/100 and 58.66/100, respectively, and he still refused to curve. Only take his class if you want your GPA to go south dramatically and quickly.
He recently deleted a lot of students' reviews which is against the policy. I have taken a lot of screenshots as proof. He can't hide everything. If he wants to be a better professor, please listen to students. Stop covering up and do your job. Do you know how many student graduations/lives you have ruined? Students have depression because of him.
I wanna see whether he will delete this time. I have proofs and the student below me has them too. It is interesting that he likes or enjoys students suffering. I am retaking his class in Fall 2023 just to give him another chance. If he keeps being like this, then I could post the proofs on social media. Redemption is real and it is never too late.
How is he still employed at SJSU? I hope they get someone else to teach 142 because this guy is a joke and his tests are not reflective of the material taught in class or the hw, its a must to be in office hours if you want a chance of passing.
Dr. So may be a nice guy as he is willing to help, but he's a terrible professor. The difficulty of the problems on the tests is nothing compared to the class examples and homework as the averages on the midterms and final were in the 50s out of 100, yet he refused to curve. He also occasionally made mistakes and it cost me homework points.
Terrible professor. He does not give students enough preparation for exams. The tests are WAY harder than any of the homework problems or anything that is done in class. To make matters worse, he does not curve even though the average scores on the tests are in the 50s out of 100.
Do not even bother with this professor. Drop the class if you can and save your GPA.
Drop while you can. I had no choice than to take this professor and I thought that if I studied enough, I could make it through. Worst decision. His exams were crazy hard and he refused to curve regardless of the high or low even though the average on the midterms and final were in the 50s out of 100.
Tests are INSANE. Class isn't curved, and the tests are designed to fail you if you don't have a photographic memory of every single theorem or proof. The tests are extremely abstract, so the homework is useless in preparing you in any way. Dr. So is a nice guy but avoid taking Combinatorics with him since he does not prepare you for his own exams.
Save yourself the time...I tried to stick with this professor since he was the only one available at the time but that was the biggest mistake in my college career so far since he grades so harshly and does not prepare students for his crazy hard exams. All the bad reviews are true. This professor should not be teaching anymore.
If get this professor, take my advice and drop his class within the easy drop period. I tried to stick it out through the whole semester, but I absolutely hated this class. You have to work extremely hard to get a decent grade since he refused to curve despite the low averages (50s/100) on both midterms and the final.
Without a doubt the worst professor I ever met in my entire life. He had no problem failing a good portion of the class. He grades extremely harshly on tests and the final and did even not curve despite the low averages (50s/100). If you can take other professor, just anyone besides him, take it!!!
This is the worst professor at SJSU hands down. I have never been in a class before where I walked out more confused. He is a terrible professor. Class averages on exams are always low (mid 50s or lower than that) and he does not curve whatsoever, even when majority of the class is failing. I am so sorry if you are stuck to take him.
Horrible lecturer, extremely tough grader. He acknowledges that a majority of his students fail but offers no solutions and refuses to curve. He does not care whether or not you pass the class.
Usually I take rmp reviews lightly because most people will only speak on their bad experiences but TRUST ME WHEN I SAY HE IS GENUINELY A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. Good portion of my class failed, he refuses to curve, and I do not think he cares about the success and wellbeing of his students. Extremely hard professor for NO REASON. Avoid at all costs
Before taking his 142, I heeded someone's warning on here from a review a long time ago to basically "treat this class as if it were two" in terms of effort needed to pass the class. Attend office hours and if you are like me, it was way more effective to remember the book's techniques and refresh on precalc/calculus 2's "tricks" about series.
He is an unforgiving grader who gives complicated lectures and does not care if students understand the material or not. His teaching method does not even make sense. He acts as if everyone in class already previously understands the concept. Unless you are extremely good at math, I would highly recommend not taking this guy for Math 142.
Do NOT take this professor. A good amount failed his class due to his impossible tests with no cheat sheets, yet he refused to curve despite the low averages on the tests and final (in the 50s out of 100). He does not realize that he's the problem despite so many failures. This class was a waste of time and effort.
Very tough on students. He refused to curve despite the low averages on the midterms and final (the averages were in the 50s out of 100 on all three tests), and if you get lost you would have to work super hard to catch up. He has very high expectations of everyone and does not care whether students understand the material or not.
I only took him since he was nice enough to help me when I was stuck on a problem since his office mate, Dr. Jahanbekam, who was my Math 42X professor at the time, was helping another student. However, I made a big mistake in taking him as he is an unforgiving grader who makes his test problems nothing like the homework problems and class examples.
Available during office hours to help you learn, but it did not help. This was seriously the hardest class I have ever taken. Material sucks and he does not make it any easier. If you have to take his class, you should get a math tutor and start praying to your higher power.
He is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. If you take him, just know that your entire grade is essentially based off of exams (two midterms and a final). The class averages on the exams were in the 50s out of 100 yet he refused to curve. He also makes a six figure salary, he really can care less about the students.
Worst professor ever. When I did not do well on his crazy hard tests, he told me, "Don't be too up-tight. Relax and enjoy the mathematics that you have learned this semester. Maybe you can re-do some problems by changing the numbers to test your understanding. Studying with friends is also a good idea." However, I still did not do well.
Drop if you can. If you are still taking his class, wait until the grades for the first test and think again. Exams are extremely hard and he does not care if you struggle.
By far the worst math teacher I ever had. His class is incredibly hard and most students fail. Do NOT take him, even as a last resort.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL. Class average on tests were in the 50s out of 100, yet he refused to curve. He also lectures extremely fast without clarifying concepts. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!
Avoid at all costs! Exams are 80% of your grade and the averages are in the 50s out of 100, but he never curved. He's the issue, not the study habits.
Do not take this guy. He may be a nice guy, but he is a terrible professor since he refuses to curve even though the averages on the two midterms and final are in the 50s out of 100. Not only that, but the questions on the tests are NOTHING like the homework problems and the examples that are covered in his lectures.
This class with Professor Wasin So is extremely difficult. Exams average in the 50s with no curve, and he lectures too fast. However, using unstuckstudy and study groups helped me get through it.
By far one of the best math professors I've taken! His lectures are very informative and explain the topics in thorough detail. He's funny and very easy to reach out to during his office hours. The course itself is challenging, but Dr. So ensures that his students thoroughly understand the material
Honestly not as bad as what people say. He is a nice guy but a very tough grader. One question is worth a lot of points. Hard to keep up with his lectures but he is willing to help.
A good portion did not pass this course. He is not good at teaching and is even worse when it comes to tests as the questions are crazy hard and he refuses to curve even though the averages are in the 50s out of 100. He gave the second midterm the week before the final. This man's plot armor is his tenure. Prepare to suffer.
I understand failing a class if we do not work hard, but in this case, the professor made his tests and final so hard that the averages were in the 50s out of 100. It feels like his intention is to make students fail. I do not understand why SJSU continues to employ him. STAY AWAY guys, you do not deserve to go through this class.
You know something is wrong when the class averages on the midterms and final are in the 50s out of 100 (without curve). Terrible professor.
he is a really good professor, he's funny, thorough, and class is well scheduled. he has 2 midterms, which have 5 problems each, 4 OF THEM ARE ON THE PRACTICE TEST. he is not a bad teacher at all, the class itself is just really difficult. ALL math 42 classes have the same final. It's worth 40% of your grade for any professor you take.
This is the worst professor I ever had. He realizes that many students do not do well on his tests since the problems are nothing compared to the class examples, yet he does not curve. The two midterms and the final are a huge part of your grade, so watch out.
Do not even bother with this class. Homework is very difficult and requires hours of outside class time, and tests only build off of that difficulty.
avoid at all costs. extremely tough grader and will give quesitons on test that are not covered on homework and practice test. exam averages in 40-50 range and he will NOT curve.
This class is hard. Your grade depends on you studying. So is such a kind professor, to the point that I imagine the only people saying negative things about him are those who did not study well. The best pick for math 42 by far.
This is a difficult class, but to no fault of the professor. Doctor So's lectures were very well-structured and you can truly see his passion for the subject & how he wants his students to feel the same way. Take good notes. The tests can get hard, but the final replaces your lowest test score. I couldn't have asked for a better professor.
Tests and final is basically your entire grade. I like that he's passionate about the subject, but he goes through stuff fast and it can get confusing. No curves even if the average is 50%. The grade on canvas isn't your real grade, you need to weigh everything and calculate the grade yourself, which he mentioned on the last class day :(
Prof. So shows care for the class, but its hard to keep up and read his handwriting at times, especially since he does not post any notes. Content is hard to grasp, so though attendance isn't mandatory, you need to show up or else you will be behind. To do good in this class, you need to sacrifice a lot of time to studying. No extra credit or curve
Good professor overall. Very approachable and accessible outside class for doubts. The course itself is on the tougher side and requires a lot of practice. He gives plenty of homework which really helps. Three tests and a final, with the final replacing the lowest test score.
I didn't like him at first, he used to give lots of HW and his tests were difficult, class used to avg in 50's and 60's, but if u study carefully u will get in 80's-90's, but his class helps a lot for the common finals as most other professors didnt cover the whole content that was in the final. So overall I liked his class and recommend taking it
