Be sure to work in his class, it is definitely not easy. Wayne teaches very well and expects you to know your stuff, hard marker. He's very approachable and willing to help.

I really like this prof. I think that he teaches with clarity and his classes are interesting. I think he marks fairly...it is not an easy class for me but I suck at math haha.
Wayne is a great math prof. He is nice, his classes are structured and predictable, and he gives clear notes. He is a fair marker, but it is up to you do all of the work he assigns and make sure you understand the material. Most importantly, Wayne makes an otherwise boring class bearable. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Wayne's a good prof. It's not easy but he's really helpful if you go talk to him.
Solid prof, and knows his materials. DO ASSIGNED QUESTIONS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. TRY HARD, NOT AN EASY COURSE FOR MANY.
Wayne is awesome... i had several afterclass questions and got full 10minute mini lectures as if he was teaching the thing all over again.. i even asked some questions out of curiousity and he got very excited and went into detail.. I found him quite funny, as well.
Good overall but sometimes he wasn't incredibly clear about tests or assignments. In fact, once he directly told our class not to study something because it would not be on the test, then he did put it on the test. Lame.
Wayne was great! He's been teaching this for a long time so he knows his stuff. Well structured classes and clear notes. Make sure to do the practice and ask questions when unsure. He's a charasmatic and funny guy. Keeps you awake during math class!
Yes Wayne is funny and makes comprehensible notes, but he expects all of his students to have taken calculus and know what is going on, when it's guaranteed that not every student has taken high school calc and don't know what's going on. If you haven't taken high school calc, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH WAYNE!!
Great great Prof! Explains things very well. If you go to class, listen and do practice questions you'll do fine. Made math enjoyable and would love to take his courses again!
Wayne's hilarious! Had many math joke shirts with equations and such, he was clear and explained things really well. practice tests were usually very much like the exams. Go to most classes and do the assigned problems and you'll do awsome!Overall GREAT prof
I don't know who said "he expects us to know high school math" that is not true! Wayne is one of the most passionate and effective profs I've ever had. He knows what students need and turned a class that I initially groaned at the thought of to a fun and interesting experience. I would take math again with him in a heartbeat.
Wayne is a good Prof. Math is by far my worse subject and i was able to make it through his class. His notes are great. He does lots of examples. Midterms are straight forward. No surprises. He loves math so much and it almost (only almost) makes you want to love it too.
For some reason, I didn't like listening to his lectures, I thought they were quite boring (If you want to be in a class with intimidating lectures, take Edward Butz as your prof., his midterms are EXACTLY based off the assigned homework probs.). Wayne's midterms are pretty straightforward. The exam was also pretty straightforward, he's 'not bad'.
Such a nice guy! If you took calculus in high school I would definitely take Broughton's class. Spends too much time on proofs but midterms are very easy and so was the final. No graphing calculators allowed.
Wayne is clearly very passionate about math, but his lectures can be dull and dry. He spent too much time on proofs, and although his are notes clear, he didn't do many examples. I always found his practice tests to be easier than the real tests. He explains things in a really clear way, but my biggest complaint was his lack of examples in class.
Very short explanations. This man gives a lot of notes, and explains them all in the pretense that you have a good handle on it all. His explanations can be a bit immaterial, but overall, his class is great, and with enough effort, you can master Calculus II. His tests are quite difficult, especially when compared to Javad's.
Dr. Broughton loves math - and he wants you to love it, too! Echoing others: more examples, less proofs. More funny shirts and mugs and stories! Good, super smart prof who is nice and loves to teach (and he's cute) - it could be much worse!
Wayne knows his stuff, turned out to be one of my favorite profs. Really helpful if you need it. Not that challenging of a course, but doing the homework questions help a lot with his midterms!
He is very passionate about math, extremely approachable, likes to joke around during lectures, dresses up for Halloween. One of those profs who want you to do well. First midterm was similar to the practice, good portion of the grade is based on assignments and labs which is great(labs were a little tough) But the final was quite challenging
Wayne is really nice and approachable. His midterms were fair and a good portion of the course was based on lab work, which is great if you tend to choke on math exams like me. The lab work was difficult but not impossible. The only complaint I have is that the final was brutal. I think Rebecca might have had more to do with that than Wayne, though
He is a good professor! He is so passionate, and which makes me love math!
Really good prof. Explains examples really well and easy to do well if you pay attention and understand what is going on in class.
Really good math prof! Super clear in class, quite good notes. It's a good idea to go to class because he explains his notes well. Tests are fair and have questions in them that are similar to examples in class. Highly recommend to first years!
besides the fact he knows what he's talking about, he makes the class interesting and funny. if you are his student, look out for his archimedes apron and math tshirts. gatdang did i laugh for the whole day
WAYNE IS AWESOME! He is so funny and loves math. His notes are super organized and he just teaches it so well. I used to struggle with math but got 90+ in both terms because he was such an awesome teacher. Tests totally fair. Do all the practice questions and you'll kill it. Seriously, DO PRACTICE QUESTIONS. its math after all.
Wayne is a really good prof. Very helpful when you ask him questions and explains concepts in class really well. He jokes around sometimes and his tests are fair. Doing practice questions help a lot. Taught me for both MATH 100 and 101 and I would definitely say he is THE BEST prof I had in both terms.
Really good prof, explains everything well and with detailed notes. Pretty funny guy too, would definitely take another math course with him.
This class was VERY frustrating! He assumed that everyone had already taken the class in high school, so he skipped over many concepts, making it tough to learn. For example, most of his examples involved little more than a question and an answer, without many steps. When answering questions, he was unclear in his answers, and condescending.
He is a really nice prof and tries to make math fun. His tests are easy if you study. I wouldn't take any other math prof for first year science but him.
Although Matrix Algebra can be fairly uninteresting at times, Wayne really goes above and beyond to try and make it interesting. He constantly makes jokes and shows his students a visual representation of what he's talking about (dimensions, subspaces, etc). Matrix is a cake walk for people who have taken/are good at CoSci.
Wayne is easy to listen to and manages to make Matrix Algebra interesting. He's friendly and easily approachable. The tests were hard, but fair. I would highly recommend taking 221 with Wayne!
Expectations of students are always clear and tests and assignments are fair.
He made calculus a lot more fun to learn. Midterms were not too difficult. Also he posts his lecture notes online the day before, so you can bring it to class if you wanted to.
My biggest problem with him was he taught like everyone had taken calc before. His lectures are little more than him reading off his notes, which thankfully are decent. Questions were answered condescendingly and the class had enough of it as nobody asked any questions after the 1st month. If you've taken calc before, it shouldn't be too hard.
Wayne knows his stuff and brings such a good quality of education to Math221. I have yet to hear of a student in this class that found him problematic. I would recommend doing a lot of textbook questions, as our final exam three days ago had a few text questions in it. Testing is overall very fair.
Broughton is a likable guy - funny, intelligent. His notes are pretty helpful. He posts them online, but it definitely helps to go to class. There are about 6 assignments and 2 midterms. The midterms are pretty easy, however I found the final to be very challenging. Overall, it's an interesting class; as long as you don't get behind, you're golden.
If you've never taken calc before, prepare to spend most of your semester learning everything on your own; if you have, then sit back and enjoy the quick refreshers he gives about each concept. He was passionate about it but time restraints on lectures (only 50min) had him scrambling to fit in most of the info, leaving it barebones and not helpful.
Both midterms are fairly straightforward. Wayne is super clear in lecture and incredibly nice and approachable. Loved his math shirt of the day!! Likes to go through some theorems, so expect to be tested on those. If you've taken calc before this class shouldn't be too hard. Do the textbook homework for xtra practice (: Final was crazy easy.
Wayne is an awesome prof. He is very enthusiastic in class and explains concepts well.
Smart but he gives easy examples then assigns EXTREMELY hard assignments. Nothing on the assignment is actually taught and the textbook doesn't help either. If he wants to assign harder questions, he should give an example during the lecture on solving it. I felt like i was teaching myself everything. not happy when im paying for him to teach me.
Phenomenal guy. He's very opinionated but it's valid and enjoyable because he's so smart. He's really helpful in office hours if you come prepared with questions. Overall easy to understand what is taught in class.
Wayne is a good prof. Very well respected and loves math. Wears super cool t-shirts and you can tell he really loves math. He really loves math theory though so be prepared to learn a lot of "facts" about math that you will end up having to know for exams. Overall great professor, tests are hard if you haven't taken calc 12.
Wayne is a really good prof. He explains concepts clearly and provides examples in the notes. The examples are usually much easier than the homework questions, but he makes sure that you have the basics. Wayne also really loves proofs and graphs, so be prepared to spend some time on theory. The final was much more difficult than the midterms.
Explains concepts well, however the examples he gives in class do not even compare to the level of difficulty of the homework/labs. It is a hard class if you haven't taken calculus before.
This was a good class. The notes were well organized; however some questions were more difficult than the examples given, but not too bad. The online assignments were helpful in understanding the concepts. I loved the collection of math-related t-shirts he had! Overall, good.
Take his class! Such great teacher!
Made the final exam way too hard then instead of scaling it drops the pass rate to 44%
Slightly awkward. I honestly felt bad for the guy. I definitely should have dropped the class but as most people already had and it was so empty. All marking was tests or quizzes because people had cheated in the past on assignments. He posts all the notes and definitely has an interest in the subject. Maybe in a smaller class he could be great.
honestly the worst prof I have ever had to endure... Lab exams are brutally hard... No matter how hard you try (Finish txtbook questions and webassignments) he literally want everyone to fail. The lab exams are a joke, he gives examples you aren't able to find through web or textbook Q's. if you can avoid this course do it. he needs a reality check
Wayne is a very passionate professor, and is SUPER intelligent. He definitely knows matrix algebra inside and out. He is very proof heavy which is quite difficult for lots of students, and his assignments/tests and not from a question bank like most professors, so sometimes the questions are tricky. Absolutely love the man otherwise though!
If it weren't for the Coronavirus, I would not have passed this class. This was ridiculously hard and I didn't know anyone doing well on the tests, but nothing was being done to help us. Lectures were hard to follow, I was definitely struggling. Only reason I did well was because his online lectures were actually much better than his in-person.
Such an easy course, nothing to say.
Wayne is an excellent prof, overall the course was not hard because he was clear and concise; he was clear with what grading expectations were, and he gave us recommended textbook questions- which popped up on the lab tests. I would recommend having wayne as a prof if you have to take integral calculus
he dosent care
He spent way too much time teaching the first half of the course and completely rushed the other half.
Wayne is a nice guy, but he is not the best at explaining concepts. He only has pre-typed notes and just reads off of them for lecture. I find it very hard to learn from Wayne and his examples in class are incredibly simply compared to those on the tests. You need to put a lot of work in to do well in this class. also not good at replying to emails
He is very nice, but teaching is just not for him. He will not reply to your emails, and his pre-written notes are very low effort. I almost always had to relie on extra sources to understand the topics.
Wayne is nice, but he simply does not teach very well. Wayne uses pre-written notes in class which he simply reads off of during the lecture, which are oftentimes quite messy and hard to follow. In the occasional case that Wayne actively solves a question in class, they are incredibly simple compared to those on the Lab Tests and Written Assignment
Great professor, definitely knows his stuff really well. I really liked his lectures
I think that Professor Broughton was a very nice guy but I did not like his class. I had a hard time following the lectures and the tests and assignments were extremely difficult, nothing like the practice problems or the examples from in class. He was always super kind though and is super passionate about math, and was always showing us his pets!
He was a nice person, but he just reads off his pre-written notes during the class, which is boring. I only used the textbook, and I believe studying the textbook was far more helpful than attending his classes.
His lectures were okay, I felt that he was not very clear on some things but it was easy to figure out if you read the textbook after watching his lecture. Overall, he was okay. His lectures aren't super necessary in my opinion.
Cool prof! He did "Friday pet" or something during lectures where he showed his pets every friday!
Very difficult course. There is a 50% average so far for the first midterms. The professor is above average but the course is just that hard that the professor is forced to go very fast through the lectures.
Prof. Broughton is an excellent math professor. He is very helpful and cares about his students. However, the class is really hard.
Wayne is a great teacher. And he clearly cares about his students. Maybe he has too much going on right now because the last half of the semester felt quite rushed which resulted in a lot of unnecessary stress. The course content was interesting, however the grading is tough.
nice guy but he isn't the best at explaining
His knowledge of the course (cryptography) is outstanding. He is really competent and he makes the class fun by now and then making a comment that is really funny. The content was awesome but covered a lot of material. The assignments are hard and will take a lot of time to solve. The midterm and final are hard but not too bad.
Friendly teacher and classes weren't too boring. Personally I used other resources like YouTube and khan academy because I had a hard time learning the content through the lectures alone. Optional free textbook written by another prof that's really helpful. Tutorial had assignments for marks and clickers during lectures. Mediocre class
his tests are very hard and he pretty much just reads off of online notes, his methods of communicating the information is sub par. You'll find yourself teaching yourself the majority of the course and with a challenging class like calc 2 that is not ideal.
I like Dr. Broughton. He is a nice person and is super approachable as a prof. We had one very difficult test and he took the blame for how low we scored and scaled up our grades due to this. I do, however, find his teaching style a little frustrating. He rather demonstrates concepts instead of explaining or simplifying them.
Wayne is a nice and a chill guy, however I don't really like his style of teaching. He mainly focuses on his notes, reading them and explaining concepts through those notes using easy examples. However, the tests which he gives are very difficult compared to the examples he has solved in class. Get ready to do lab work and webwork homework.
All the reviews saying he is terrible must be students who are slackers or just bad at math. He's a great prof but you do have to do the work, he's not going to spoon feed it to you. Do the homework, go to office hours because he'll give you mini lectures one on one that are super helpful! If you do badly it's probably your own fault.
Wayne was quite awful. At first seems like a nice guy with the math t-shirts and all, but you find out that you haven't learnt much by the first midterm. Get ready to learn how to learn Calc II completely on your own because Wayne's math notes aren't going to help with anything. If you're already good at math you'll be fine I hope. Goodluck!!
Avoid him at all costs. Wayne is so lazy and disorganized and his style of teaching is terrible. He reads off of pre-written notes even after students ask that he do more examples on paper. It was extremely difficult to learn math this way and my grade plummeted compared to math100. Try to take a different prof if you can.
Avoid this prof at all costs. He shows up for class late and underprepared everyday, doesn't show a big interest in seeing the students succeed. Notes are useless. Final exam was extremely tough and many students did not reach the min 40%. Although final marks were so low, he did not scale the test resulting in a huge drop in overall grade for many
Broughton just reads from his stupid pdf notes. Then solves some wishy-washy questions on spot. Afterward, he surprises you with super freaking questions whether on the assignments or at the exams. Lots of people failed this semester's result shows, is simply an untalented teacher who's just wasting students' financial resources.
His lectures are based off the posted notes on canvas; however, there are a few tidbits he throws in here and there that make the content interesting. Overall, the course didn't feel too difficult as long as you put effort into the labs since the exams are pretty much the same as those questions.
Good lecturer, cares about students, and tells you exactly what'll be on the exams. Suggestions for him: The examples for some of the topics don't paint the full picture, and you're left piecing it together on the test. This is rare though, mostly predictable test questions and good teaching.
His lectures are good, however I found him to be a little over thorough in the basics of this course. I wish he had spent more time on the more complex concepts rather than graze over them in comparison. Overall his deadlines were fair, midterms were relatively easy and the final was fair and similar to the practice material he gave us.
Honestly he was by far the worst professor I have had in my entire university career. He did not explain examples well expected everyone to fully understand his train of thought and was incredibly unkind and unhelpful when a problem arose. I would highly recommend not taking a course with him. There are much better Math teachers at UBCO
Dr. Broughton is a great person in general, however, I do wish he focused more on difficult problems and examples rather than going over the theory stuff of math concepts. His quizzes were exactly what was taught in class and the final was similar to the practice final and lab questions. Overall, an amazing prof who truly loves math!
Dr. Broughton's lecture format was a little bit difficult to follow. Quizzes were easy but I had to rely on other profs review sessions to study for the final because the type/level of questions differed. Dr. Broughton is a caring and amazing person, but if I could choose again, I would probably take MATH100 with Dr. Nastos or Dr. Davis instead.
Professor Broughton puts a lot of effort into his lectures and explains each topic in a detailed manner. Class tests are neither easy nor too tough. He did not provide us with any practice papers for class tests. If you have attended his lectures and studied from his notes, then you are good to go. Lectures and notes were available on Canvas too.
Prof. Broughton gave very straightforward lectures that were easy to follow, his tests were very fair and he gave feedback if you got the question wrong. He is incredibly approachable and is the kind of professor to know your name even if you don't go to office hours. He fell a little behind on the syllabus but was sure to leave it off the final.
Answer keys to practice questions are given late if ever. For the mid term, the answer key was posted at 10:00PM the night before. Another time his answer key only covered half of the worksheet and was posted at 11:00PM the night before. Takes forever to mark tests. Class average on one quiz was 48% despite the concepts being fairly simple.
