Very good teacher, super nice. The best part about him is that he will try to help you and is always providing office hours, even outside of his regular times. Essays are marked sparatically thought.
definitely one of the best i've had at uofa
Was not very punctual and did not show up to several classes. Still, I enjoyed being in his class.
Best professor I've ever had. Really cares about his students, eager to help us and knows his stuff. Diplomatic to a fault.
Fantastic, really cares for students and will answer any question. Friendly and learned everyone's name
One of the best profs I've had. Relaxed and very helpful during class and during office hours. Responds to emails fairly punctually when he's not busy. He's a very fair marker (fair =/= easy) Highly recommended.
ATTN: Engineers....get in this guys section! He is an awesome prof...he understands that as engineers, english isn't our top priority so he tries to make it as engineering related as possible. DeFehr is da man!
defehr is da man
BEST prof i've had so far. Very understanding! Take his class, you won't regret~ :D
Low emphasis on the things we were actually graded on. Seemed to be ‘phoning it in’ most mornings. For introductory English, look elsewhere.
All right people, he will put you on the spot! so be ready. He is a good proff. classes are interesting. just read the text and know the Genre, techniques used in film. exams are easy with a lot of choices. Take his class:)
:S. I thought he was a good prof. I can't believe I listened to the people here who said he was good.
Awesome prof. Understand the relevance of english and engineering, therefore gives us easy assignments. Very laid back course and flexible with deadlines. He gives open topics (write about anything you want). And was not required to read any books.
I don't think that he gives out A's at all...no one in my class has gotten an A, but it's pretty easy to get a B. He knows his stuff and is fun to talk with, but I don't know how to get an A. I just can get an A.
He is a funny and easy to approach. However, I feel like the person below me --> I don't know how to do good in his class!
Initially I thought he would be a great professor until... no response to e-mails, failure to organize meeting times, too many inclass movies, tardy for 90%of classes and missing 3 classes completely, he took the zest out of my earlier interest in the class. Classes were quite uneventful, assignments provided plenty of choices and exams were similar.
Same with the person below me, I also had troubles arranging meeting times with him, and we failed to meet 3 times as well :( I know that he is a busy guy but I think he should work on his timing a bit more. Also, I find it hard to get even a B on papers and I know I tried really hard on them :(
he's a nice dude with a big heart, but his level of disorganization is unjustifiable for a university prof, in my opinion. he didn't have some essays/assts marked by the last day of classes; leaving some students with 50% of their term mark undetermined is unacceptable. this class could have been great but i thought it was a joke.
Very laid back, great guy, easily approachable. Flexible assignments. Only had 4 essays with the midterm/final over the whole course. Class time is spent on discussions trying to broaden people's minds and creativity (which don't you think intro English should be doing??). If you want rote learning - don't take Wayne. Otherwise he's excellent.
He seemed like he was really laid back and approachable but i had emailed him twice for an assignment and he didnt respond. When i went to see him he asked me if i was the student who had emailed him.Hmm... why would he check his email and then not reply back? Classes were scattered and i just did not learn anything.
Fantastic teacher i've ever had before. He is a hard worker also. BTW, he gave me a higher mark so i just thought that he is a great teacher. As a result, i choose to take his ENGL111!
He seems very nice but he is completely disorganized, I learned next to nothing and he seems very nervous teaching, almost as if he is trying too hard to seem cool. It makes english look like a joke. Sorry but I would not recommend his class unless you hate english, are looking to be bored out of your mind, and get a nice easy mark.
I really don't know how to explain his way of teaching.
He is a very genuine guy. Talks about family alot &explains how sorry he is for not marking things in time, cause he just had a babyetc(excusable in my books). For people saying he is horrible cause he doesnt do anything? Its English,&for science/eng's,its a great break.Never stressed once over course.HARD marker tho(never know what hes looking for
An overall good proffesor. Marks were based on 4 essays, a midterm, a final, short reading quizzes and participation. Friendly and approachable, and marks fairly easily, but hard to get above an 80% on an essay, so hard to get an A. Definitely recommended for first year English, he makes classes interesting, and the reading material isn't too bad.
very easy going, marks fairly. Essays are easy to get in the 70% range but hard to pass the 80% range. He understands that not everyone takes english because they love it, he tries his best to teach english without making it a burden. Only downfall is that at times he is too easygoing, and some lectures aren't clear on what we are trying to learn.
Really nice guy. Learned absolutely nothing from him. Came into this class loving english and he basically ruined it for me. Going to class was a waste of time because absolutely nothing got done. He was always late and disorganized. Practically impossible to get into the 80's on essays. Don't expect him to hand things back on time either.
Like others have said, he is a bit disorganized. HOWEVER, if he has missed a meeting with you, he will give you an extension. I've also handed in late essays with no penalty. Good choice on reading materials, so at least you're not bored out of your mind. His notes are a bit disorganized though, but only the definitions were really tested on anyway
Ruined my love of English. He was disorganized and I learned just as much on the days when he didn't show up. Not many assignments due and even if you do everything he tells you, you still won't get an 80, also terrible in responding to emails- any questions must be asked to his face.
If anyone can keep me motivated to learn for 3 hours, it's this guy. Good class, although some of the discussions get ivory towerish. But overall, a great ENGL class!
Understands that English is a typical weakness in engineers and that we'd much rather be elsewhere. As a result he made the class as enjoyable as possible. Lots in-class assignments made attendance necessary.
honestly best prof so far. Makes it exciting to go to class, while other classes were reading shakespeare, we were playing video games. Really easy-going and respectful would DEFINATELY recommend his class if your not really and english person!
Very nice person. Helpful in answering questions. Respectful to students, and listens to all points of view. I enjoyed his class.
Dr. DeFehr used group work and group discussions in lieu of actually teaching. I was disappointed by how little information we received from him, especially since I was interested in the course. Showing up for class and writing a few essays will guarantee you a good grade, but don't take his class if you want more than that.
Interesting, friendly prof but a lot of irrelevent info discussed in lectures. Be prepared to do a lot of unique readings and use a lot of technology. Very interesting essay topics.
Super nice, easy going. Great guy all around. He extended the due date by a week on both of our essay assignments. Final was a cake walk.
Very personable and friendly with great sense of humor. Gives wide variety of essay topics which is nice. Lectures were mostly irrelevant and a waste of time. Never got below B on anything, but I'm good at English. He is disorganized and marks papers late but does give extensions. I would recommend his class to anyone. Easy and enjoyable.
Fantastic prof. You will learn. Really useful.
If you have any interest in english, i highly recomment NOT taking this class. defuhr is a really nice guy, funny even, but he doesnt teach anything. prior to this class i LOVED english. this class was torture going to, he marked essays in a ridiculous way, spent class time doing research that was not graded and completely irrelevent
Great prof. Loved going to his classes. Very laid back and willing to provide help one on one. Definitely recommend taking his class.
Fun, laid-back professor. Very kind to his students, and offered help with my paper. I enjoyed his class, I looked forward to going, and I learned a lot.
This Prof was actually really good, he is funny and tried to make a sci-fi class fun. His final exam was fairly easy and he gave tons of choices for the essay topics. One of the better english profs....
Worst english prof I have ever had. At first you just think that he is really laid back and easy because you always do group work. Then you get your essays back and realize he hasn't actually taught you anything. The stuff he talk about is useless for tests. He didn't show up to any of our meetings or ever email me back. Such a hard marker!
Not a bad prof, but his class isn't structured. He spends a lot of time on sci-fi. His classes are interesting, and he's very approachable.
The class was quite easy and low stress. He understands that not all people love English, like myself, but I enjoyed this class. He doesn't criticize your ideas on the essays like some other teachers do. He doesn't force his ideas on students and he doesn't think that his thoughts are the only right thoughts.
Has a horrible reputation for never returning graded papers and pursuing own objective of using technology - NOT teaching the material
He's a nice guy for sure, and approachable, but after being stuck in a night class with him for a term, I felt like he was wasting my time. Did not learn a thing the entire time and I would not have shown up to class if it wasn't a once-a-week night class.
I had the best class with Wayne. I felt his approach to technology and the way we use it was refreshing and actually kept me interested. I got good grades and I wrote papers the night they were due so all you have to be is interested and listen to what he is saying and you'll pass for sure. As long as you keep your mind open you'll love this class.
This guy was the best. Hardly had to do any work, and gives you 5% just for showing up. Easy marker, just write an extra page and he'll give you a decent mark. Easy to understand. Really nice guy. Take his class.
amazing prof, we watched avatar instead of having to do a novel study. english for engineer is pretty much a fluff coarse so its nice that he didnt take it too seriously. Made the class alot of fun so you actually want to go. excellent prof.
He was a nice guy, but his goals and expectations were never really clear. Papers took forever to get back, and comments were less than helpful. The class itself is very slack, but be warned that it will come back to bite you.
I've had Mr. Defehr for 112 and 389 now. Really nice guy, but not the greatest prof ever. Always gives essay topics on WoW, Rammstein or Avatar, which makes course content seem irrelevant. Low expectations and he's often late for class. Attendance not mandatory. If you're tech savvy you'll do fine. I would still recommend his class to anyone.
Not a bad class. attendance makes essays and the final pretty easy. he seems to give better marks to short to the point essaysv(the kind you write last minute) and lower marks to essays that go more in depth into the topic
Really enjoyed this prof. All our texts were online (eg. we watched Inception, music videos etc) so no worries about reselling books ppl don't want. MINIMAL take home readings or assignments - perfect for a science kid like me. Does take time to hand back assignments but it was a laid back class, and the final was relatively easy. Recommended.
Wayne is a really nice guy, and always willing to help. However, his class is very slack and expectations are sometimes unclear, in that case, just be sure to email him or talk to him and he will clarify. Good class for science/non-humanities students because reading and writing assignments are minimal.
Cool prof, made the mandatory English course for engineering enjoyable. Always chose pretty interesting topics and we even had the chance to watch a movie. Written assignments are minimal compared to other sections. Just make sure you attend as many lectures as you can since he has a lot of in-class activities that are worth marks
Such a chill teacher. He doesn't judge any opinion, in fact he encourages you to share yours. He takes a while to give back essays, but he tells you exactly what you need to work on. Doesn't take time away from other classes. Minimal reading, minimal work. He's fun and super nice. He can be late quite often though.
Amazing prof, loved every class. He delves into a lot of interesting topics in his Global Perspectives course, including comics, video games, youtube videos, and Rammstein, and tends to mix up the types of assignments he makes you do instead of just written work. Generous marker if you're willing to put in the effort, and extremely easy going.
GREAT Prof! If you are a science student like me and are normally dislike English do EVERYTHING you can to get this prof. In class activities to keep you engaged,(1.5h lecture feels like 30 mins), his lectures have incredible fluidity, and NO TEXTBOOKS! If you are sick of shakespeare translating and want to study modern english, TAKE THIS CLASS.
Wayne is a fantastic teacher, he is so chill and you basically never have to go to his class and he doesn't care, as long as you do his activities and essays(which they are two of..) easy marker, funny guy.
I don't understand his class at all, german music videos and Inception, with manga? I understand that our world is online nowadays, but this class was very inconsistent. I think I would have liked him better with a different class, he is interesting and funny, not a lot class of notes, but you need to pay attention, it will only benefit you!
Great professor!! By far my favourite, would love to have him again. Very interesting lectures, and has a unique way of teaching. Very helpful, and always willing to answer questions or help with essays. Would defiantly recommend him!
Very approachable, helpful, personable. Very chill atmosphere in class. Understands that most of us are in Science. Takes awhile to mark essays. Clearly knows his stuff, but the course itself is very different from traditional English, so it can be confusing. Teaching method is somewhat disorganized. Nevertheless, GREAT prof.
This has to be the easiest class I've ever taken. Such a chill prof, but his essay topics were almost too straightforward - not at all like the diploma exam essay topics! This class was very fun, and his emphasis on group work made it easy to make friends. Gave us extensions on both essays, but was sometimes pretty bad about answering emails.
Wayne is the most laid-back guy I've ever met. His final essay question was "what was your favourite topic this term and why?" .. he's chill. Easy marker, funny, and always lets us leave early. Try and get him if you can because he makes english easy!
I am not sure what to say about Wayne. He is a strange cat that is for sure. His class is quite easy. It is hard to judge his marking because he does not leave very many comments. the course material quite interesting. However, his final exam was hard to study for due to his randomness. he does not respond to emails. I didn't love or hate him!
Takes a long time to get back essays. Marks are random and without much explanation. Gives everyone B's but won't give out A's. Easy class but go at your own risk depending on the grade you want.
Best professor in d game son. Son, you don't even know. His rating is like 3.8 or summing, but its actually like 4.3 or 4.5 son, you feel? Teaching is pretty good son, puts d team on his back on a regular type basis. His teaching has so mach power son, so mach power. Son I beg you to try dis prof, he is the king of the English
What a great prof. He's a genuinely nice person who cares about his students, and he's very encouraging. It's not hard to get a good mark in his class if you complete all of the assignments and show up to majority of the classes. Long story short, he's awesome.
Terrible prof. Doesn't show up to scheduled office hours or his final exam for that matter, talks about topics that are completely irrelevant to a university education, doesn't use a textbook and never gives feedback. Do not take this class if expect to learn anything other than basic functions of the internet.
It is difficult for me not to go on rant but I will try. I have had him twice: once in my first year and this year at a 300 level. The first year he was unreal, while this year he was abominable. I wish I had more space to write out why he should not be allowed to teach anything higher than a first year class but I don't. I was given no education.
What a terrible prof! Disorganised to the point of being disrespectful to students. Didn't assign any books for a 300-level English class. Expectations were NOT made clear. And assigned a group project worth 15% of our mark in the last two classes. I love 20th century American lit, and this class taught me nothing about it--useless!
What a great prof! he encouraged everyone to share their opinion on topics and didn't just preach about content. He was always very respectful to students and open to counter arguments to his ideas. He didn't assign a textbook; rather, he assigned eclass readings, which was nice. Great guy, Definitely take his class!!!
unorganized, and takes forever to mark assignments.
As an instructor, he is fairly decent. He explores many interesting topics and establishes a broad variety of classroom activities. Unfortunately, he is disorganized, ambiguous, and unpredictable as a marker. He doesn't adhere to his rubric and places great weighting on irrational elements on your papers. You can't ever improve in his class.
Easily the worst prof I've ever had. Often late, Incredibly slow marker, No feedback on assignments, his lessons are pointless. Avoid if you can!
Although his class is easy enough, he has too many "participation marks" coming from confusing and pointless in and out of class tasks. Attendance is not mandatory and his assignments are decently easy but he is so unorganized and takes unreasonable amounts of time to mark them. I learned next to nothing. He's a good guy, but should not be a prof.
If you're looking for a fun, interesting course to fill up and English requirement, take this course! If you plan to pursue an English degree, maybe reconsider. Awesome, fun class that focuses on atypical mediums (comics, video games, and music videos), and will keep you interested. The only Eng class I didn't hate.
This professor rocks. His classes are pretty chill, the content is great. For an introductory English course, it was fun and pretty easy. Two essays, a final and a couple of participation assignments, overall the class was pretty low maintenance, stay on top of your readings and review before the final and you will be fine.
Very straight forward English professor. Tells you exactly how he would like you to write your essays, and if you follow his instructions, you'll do well. Show up to class for the notes. Would like more feedback on the essays, but that's really the only negative aspect. Also, not a lot of reading in English 124. Good first year English class
Professor Defehr made my life as a science student easier There were only 2 essays that I had to write and he is very clear on what he expects on the essay. Just follow the instructions he gives out in class and you'll do well. Not a lot of readings in class and they were all modern and interesting. Genuinely cares about his students. Amazing prof.
I've never had such a nice and helpful professor before. This course was on literary analysis and we covered popular material by lady gaga and Jayz. He was so fair with marking and really helpful with essays! would take it 100% again and again.
If you're just looking to get through first-year English to get to the real meat of your program, this prof is for you. Doesn't make students pay for any textbooksnovels and gives very clear expectations. Follow these expectations and a grade of B+ or higher is easily achievable. He's also a pretty funny guy.
Very easygoing, did not antagonize students, and gave excellent feedback on written assignments. Preferred to draw material from the internet i.e. no textbooksnovels. Very slow marker, however. Recommended for those whose writing is not their forte.
This is the worst professor that i ever have, his lecture is really useless and a waste of money and time. After his lecture i really regret i pay money for his lecture, he might be professional at this field, but he know nothing about teaching . Once he play a movie in lecture time for four-whole-god-damn-lectures,and that movie's name s hunger g
Dr. DeFehr is my favourite professor at the University of Alberta. I had 2 classes with him and absolutely loved it! He really cares about his students and offers wonderful suggestions and feedback on essays. The material he chooses are based on modern texts/songs so it is always interesting. Would recommend any class with him to anyone!
Mr. Defehr was an amazing prof for my first year English class! Not only was he able to make historical english interesting and fun, but he also gives great feedback on essays and is there if you need help. Will always read your papers and answer questions if you go up to him. Would recommend!
Amazing Prof, picks great texts and the course isn't very text heavy. Super nice guy and very helpful on essays. Would recommend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wayne DeFehr is an amazing prof for first years. This was my first university english class, and he made it straightforward, simple and easy. He assigns very little readings and you don't have to purchase any books for his class. His feedback is awesome on all assignments, and he helps a lot with essay writing. Amazing! Would recommend to anybody!
I liked him as a prof. We watched movies, played video games, and just chatted about random stuff. Then we had exams about it. Pretty fun, obviously mandatory attendance. He didn't make us purchase any books which was very unusual for an ENG class, but i cant complain.
The man is a legend.
Wayne is an amazing English professor. I really enjoyed his class, and he always used class time efficiently. His choice of texts may seem unusual for an English class, but I personally found them pretty interesting (ex. Waka Waka - Shakira, Inception, etc.). I definitely recommend him for any first year students!
I liked Wayne. Class was pretty easy, he did random participation sign-ins for marks. He was very clear with his expectations and gave fair marks with explanations for his decisions. Courteous and encourages class participation. We used the textbook quite often.
Loved this prof. I took Engl 121 and Engl 123. I was dreading English because I had little time as a science student. He never assigned homework other than 2 essays. His feedback was informative and he was very clear about what he wanted. He was a little bit of a tough grader. We also covered very interesting topics in class. The best prof I've had
Great guy, I really enjoyed it as a first year student as well, I would recommend him to anybody
AMAZING prof!! I would recommend him to everyone if you get the chance to enrol in his class. such clear instructions for what he expects on essays, and its an easy pass if you show up and pay attention. he is approachable and always willing to help students. just amazing.
This guy is a gem. He empathizes what an engineering student is undergoing and keeps the instruction clear and concise. I actually learnt some good stuffs rather than wasting time reading novels for a boring subject like this. The course is easy as long as you put some effort in.
Great guy. Like previous reviews, he does empathize with engineering students. Light workload, and a fair marker. Didn't learn much, but I did improve my writing skills. Would recommend anyone in engineering to take his ENGL 199 class. No readings, just watched TED Talks, movies, youtube videos and played video games in class.
Solid prof, did not assign much homework and give in-depth feedback on essays. If you listen to the feedback you can easily get A's on the papers.
Wayne is a really nice guy, sympathizes with students workload a lot. No long readings and his mid term and final were easy. Lets you pick amongst many different topics for essays and marks them very fairly. Takes attendance every class so showing up is important.
Absolutely loved this class. We didn't have any big reading (mostly small articles read in class and movies) and the essays had lots of options for subjects to choose from. He actually gave really helpful advice and I feel like my writing has improved a lot.
Loved the class despite it being a 9 am. He really cares about his students and will give you great feedback on your essays as well as help you in the writing process as long as you reach out. 10/10 prof.
Professor Defehr is very empathetic towards his students. He didn't assign any textbooks and provided our texts online, and if you are struggling he puts a lot of effort into helping you succeed. He's really understanding, and is easily reached via emails. Sometimes his lectures were confusing, but visiting him in his office will help.
Textbook use is fair, the course is fine but the prof is not the best. He does not reply to emails. I sent an email in the start of the semester, a follow up email and haven't heard since even though it's been weeks since the semester ended
Great prof! Always willing to help you out and answer any questions or concerns!
The few lectures he had were alright, though most of them were skipped for one reason or another. This was hands down the easiest class i've ever seen. Spent like 12 hours total over the whole semester and got an A-. Grade is based on lab which is literally the cmput250 tutorials, 3 writing assignments, and final 5min long game, yep 5 minutes.
Wayne DeFehr was an amazing teacher, class was usually reading or research and then group discussions. He describes the assignments he gives in great detail so you have a very clear idea of what to do, and is very easy to communicate with. Overall great and if you put in effort will get a good mark!
One of the chillest profs for English. He marks easy and extends deadlines if a few people come up to him. Also does NOT require you to purchase any books. All the literature is online or shown in class. Only downside is that he doesn't reply to emails.
Dr DeFehr was my favourite English Prof Ive ever had at the U of A. The most down to earth guy, and he gives wonderful feedback on every assignment. His lectures were a joy to attend, and he is very understanding towards student life being hectic sometimes. Totally 100% recommend taking a class with him - hes amazing.
Wayne is very nice, and he knows that students are only there because it is required courses. His lectures are easy going, he has you email your notes from that class for participation, and i didnt read a single book in this class. he provides 20 different essay topics for each essay and i wrote on a movie and a TedTalk. Zero work outside of class
Super sweet guy, would recommend. Found his english class easy. He'll go above and beyond for feedback but you have to ask for it. Had a percentage of marks for attendance so coming to class matters but isn't neccesary to succeed. I didn't have to read any books/long stories. Provided interesting topics for the course and writing was easy.
Professor DeFehr is great for ENGL 199, he understands that students are dealing with a high workload in other classes and makes it very clear what he expects for each assignments. There are participation marks but it's easy to get. Just do what he says for each assignment and you will do very well.
He was very kind and understanding, and was very clear on what was expected. He taught the course very well and was clearly passionate about what he was teaching which made it far more interesting. He was very forgiving and understanding if I ever had to miss a class as long as I emailed him to let him know.
Took Professor Wayne's class in 2020 Winter. He was great, made sure we knew the essentials for writing and reading professionally in English, all the while understanding that our workload is already heavy for 1st year and keeping it easy. The assignments were very easy and we could enjoy resources during class like short video segments.
The only downside to professor Defehr is that he's not great at responding to emails and the participation credits for every class was a little tiring, but overall he's great at helping you out with your essays! Not the easiest marker in my opinion, but he's clear in his feedback.
If you're looking for an easier 100 level English course, take it with DeFehr. Only 2 essays, an easy grammar midterm, and 1 quick and easy group project. Only downside is you have to attend lectures in order to get instructions for the participation credit, which were pretty long and tiring sometimes. Overall though he was a great professor.
The class covers short written works, speeches, and movies (no novel-reading!). The prof has few assignments (aside from participation marks): grammar quiz, 2 essays, and blog. These are worth a lot, but the prof is an easy grader - as long as you follow the format he likes. Downside? The class is not well-structured (unorganized) and unintersting
Mr. DeFehr is such a wonderful guy, he really cares about his students and tries to help you do the best that you can. I enjoyed the class itself for most of his content, but even in the few things that weren't my favourite he was always supportive and made sure that the task was understood. A real gem :)
Wayne is a really great guy, he was very flexible with due dates and willing to give extensions, gave 10% for participation which was just showing up, 1 grammar midterm that was open book, lets you choose from a selection of topics when writing papers, not a super tough grader. Overall, a very good prof who genuinely cares and wants you to succeed.
I had Dr. Wayne DeFehr for my ENGL199 Engineering english class. Dr. DeFehr is great for this intro class, he is willing to adapt his course depending on the areas where students are having the most difficulty. Dr. DeFehr is unbiased in his marking and if you write a good argument for your piece your grade received will reflect that.
I really loved his class, he was just a very sweet prof who wants to set you up for success. Easy to get a good mark if you put effort in
Dr. DeFehr is great. He does not assign long readings or novels, and there are lots of opportunities to do well in this course. He gives good feedback and genuinely seems like he wants his students to do well. Also, when the time comes to write essays, there are so many topics to choose from that you are bound to find something you'll excel at.
Participation in class makes up a portion of your grade. One of the nicest professors ever, and he truly cared about teaching. All extra course material is free as opposed to paid. Marks just a tiny bit rough, but it makes you a better student. Don't believe anyone telling you that he's a bad prof. They're probably just a lousy student.
The Wayne train is a legend for ENGL199. He marks pretty easy because he understands how much work you have in your other 4 classes. My only two gripes with him are that the participation credits after every class get annoying fast, and the man does not reply to emails, but other than that, consider yourself blessed if you get Wayne for ENGL199!
wants us to write how we'd talk in classroom discussions but is picky enough that i wonder how underdeveloped he thinks young students' vocabs are. he assumes everyone's here for a grade and nothing else, so i didn't gain much from his foolproof essay formula. feels more confining than high school. decent, lenient with time, and safely inoffensive.
Dr. DeFehr is decent as far as teachers go, but there's nothing particularly attractive about his courses. I found ENGL 103 to be remarkably dry. This is, at least in part, due to Dr. DeFehr's hesitation to take a stance or say anything substantial. If you're looking for something inoffensive, he's not bad. But keep your expectations low.
Professor DeFehr was an amazing prof. He understood that english is not an easy subject and took it step by step. I struggled with english in high school but found his class enjoyable. Would recommend!
The best English prof you'll ever get, especially if you're a STEM major like me and don't like writing essays! Gives super clear outlines and is always flexible with deadlines. No reading outside of class, and really interesting topics. Plus, he let's you go early almost every class.
I loved this English class! I was not very good at English in High School, but this class made me enjoy it. He was extremely flexible with due dates and understood that we were in many other classes. I would 100% retake his class; this was a great first-year experience for English.
Dr. DeFehr really understands his students. He gets that English isn't everybody's cup of tea, and makes it clear what you have to do in order to succeed. Engl102 consisted of mostly essays, and so long as you put the time and effort into your papers you will do well. Emailing/talking to him after class is also very helpful.
I'm a science student so it was nice to have an English teacher that understood that it was a required class and made it much easier. He gave clear criteria and was an awesome teacher. Lots of the content we covered was interesting as well.
He was super understanding if you had to miss class and explained things really well. He has a lot of super interesting topics and genuinely cares about the students. At the beginning of the semester, he had us email him what we'd like to see in his class and actually delivered. 10/10 loved his class.
DeFehr is the best prof I've had in the U of A. If you want an easy class and a high grade, take English with him even if you don't like English. Trust me. You will enjoy it. You don't have to come to every class but come to most classes to get full participation marks which is easy.
Awesome guy.
The W in his name is for win and the R is for real. DeFehr's ENGL 102 class was so easy and are structured so that you're prepared for all the assignments. The topics in the class are also very interesting to write about so that it doesn't get boring as you write about them. He's also very caring towards students and sometimes gives extensions.
Wayne is what every English teacher or professor should strive to be. He makes others look sorry in comparison. He gives clear criteria to follow and actually helps you improve your writing and your ideas. Even after the class I can't articulate how amazing he is. You will finish the class enlightened. By far the best in the English department.
One of my favourite profs. He is SUPER understanding and straight forward with what he looks for. His lectures are easy to follow along and aren't boring. heavy on the understanding part, he really does take time to care for his students and tries to fit their needs. He's given many extensions when he realizes that students are stressed.
DR DEFEHR IS THE GOAT PERIODT NOBODY DOES IT LIKE HIM!!!! SOMEONE GIVE THIS MAN AN AWARD ALREADY HE SAVED MY LIFE THIS SEMESTER WWWWWW also his little bike that he rides to class is so cute lol
LIFE IS HELL AND WAYNE IS AN ANGEL. The absolute goat. He is not part of the english department. The english department part of him. W in his name is there for a reason. Nothing but respect for the goat.
Great guy, very caring. He understands most people are required to take English, so he makes it very enjoyable and practical. Participation was in the form of attendance (proof by sending in-class notes). He is THE PERSON to take an introductory university English class with, if you aren't an Arts major.
CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH! He is an absolutely AMAZING prof. Class never seemed to drag on even though I was in TR lec. Really interesting pop culture topics which made for engaging assignments, answered emails and gave feedback on work before it was submitted. Always extended the due dates and understood that english wasn't for everyone. 10/10!!!!!!
The activities that we go over in lecture are very engaging! He provides many ways to help and gives back excellent feedback on assignments. He gives super helpful tips with upcoming assignments as well. Wayne cares a lot about his students and understand the many stresses that university students go through. He's the best eng profs out there.
Our class focus was on Popular Culture which I find very interesting. He let us choose our topics for essays, they just had to follow the prompt and generally get approved by him. His feedback was amazing and he was very kind. I recommend you have him review your intro paragraph before continuing your essay, he will guide you to a better grade.
Professor Defehr is one of the best English prof's out there by a long shot. He is super caring and understanding about his students. The topics that we cover are pretty interesting compared to other ENGL 103 classes. He makes the assignments very straightforward to understand and are not too bad as long as you stay on top of it. Best English prof.
HE IS THE DEFINITION OF WHAT EVERY PROFESSOR SHOULD BE. Wayne is just so caring of students and it shows as he gives extensions whenever students are struggling with school. He is also mindful of the fact that there are science students wanting to get English over with. Just makes life a lot easier. His take-home final is also stress free.
Best English teacher ever! Did not read a long novel (instead watched a movie) and did not have to buy any books for this class. Provides amazing feedback on assignments and is always willing to give out extensions on assignments. Very understanding and realizes that we all have other classes to worry about.
He typically gives some time during class to read articles/short stories etc. and he never made us buy any materials. Taking notes in class counts as participation, which is great. His comments on graded essays can be vague, so attend office hours if you have more questions. Other than that, the class wasn't as high effort as other english profs
He tended to flip-flop with his grading criteria. One paper he'd be fine with something, the next he'd dock for it without warning, sometimes before teaching that skill. Graded slowly and returned papers individually immediately upon grading, rather than returning them all at once. So it was a gamble as to whether you'd get your feedback on time.
He understands full well that this is a 100 level course and that most are taking it simply as a degree requirement, so he doesn't make it strenuous or stressful. "Participation" marks consisted of writing out a simple word doc each class (with his specific instructions on what to write) and emailing him. No required text!
Professor DeFehr is an absolute gem. He makes the often-dreaded English class truly enjoyable. Between his understanding nature, engaging lectures, and helpful study resources like unstuck ai, this is the prof to take for an easy A.
Wayne is such a sweet guy. He always extended the due date and we watched Avatar as our novel study. His feedback was copied and pasted from each assignment. He didn't reply to any of my emails but would be happy to help in person. 10% of your grade comes from sending in your notes after each class. Overall, super easy and he was an amazing prof.
If you get him as your professor you've basically won the lottery. He is genuinely very sweet and caring, all he really expects is that you show up to class and send in your work (he literally tells us what to write so its nothing stressful). He's extremely thoughtful and understanding, always ready to help.
DeFehr is an actual slay tbh, he was very caring and considerate. He acknowledges that many of his students are required to take an English course so he makes the course straightforward. Although his feedback was copied and pasted from essay to essay. He isn't a super hard marker. Make sure to attend class bc he takes notes as participation marks.
A great professor, workload very manageable. ALWAYS extended deadlines! Attendance mattered, as it counted towards your final grade. Rubrics were not given, but he was always open to reading intro paragraphs to see if you were on the right track. My favourite prof, was very thoughtful and easy-going.
Wayne is a really good professor. His deadlines are flexible and he gives good feedback. Attendance is mandatory but he made the class interesting. Passing the class is easy as long as you attend and participate in the classes.
Incredible professor! He was so kind and really cares about his students. He always extended deadlines too. He is very accommodating and open to giving feedback on all assignments. Only issue is that he takes a while to respond back to emails, so if you would like to talk to him I suggest making time after class to do so.
Impossible to get ahold of outside of class. Dont expect a reply to your emails
If you can manage to get Prof. Defehr you have hit the jackpot. He is caring, nice, and completely understands that this will be the last English class many students take in their lives. We went over popular forms of media and even watched a James Bond movie instead of having to read a novel. He was the best english teach I've had in my life.
DeFehr is one of the best english teachers I've ever had. He understands the change from highschool to university is complicated and is super understanding of other classes and their course load. Would 100 percent take again.
Great prof! Papers written during the semester are nice as he gives you freedom with the topics. He's a slow grader but the feedback given is good and clear. Lectures are interesting and there are many sources covered throughout. I would highly recommend. He extends due dates a lot and it's clear he cares about his students. Highly recommend.
Dr. DeFehr is an AMAZING PROF who shows genuine care for his students. He helps out and guides you with the essays. His class was never boring a Great marker as well as feedback. trouble with emails sometimes but it is probably because it gets mixed up, but if you ask him to check after class he responds fairly on time. Take him if you can!!!
Assignments had no clear instructions and no clear grading criteria. Got the exact same grade for all 4 assignments. Feedback is always the same even if you change and try to improve. Did not respond to any of my emails over the course of the entire semester. Still don't have final grades back over 3 weeks since the due date of our final assignment
Dr Wayne Defehr was an amazing professor! He is so kind and funny and is very understanding of students in his class. We almost always ended class early and he really acknowledged that everyone is busy and it's ok to not have a lot of energy and just to do the best we can. I highly highly recommend this compassionate professor.
Awesome prof, you can tell he really cares about you doing well and is happy to help if you ask. His lectures and material are more focused on current events which makes it easy to stay engaged. You have to attend class as participation counts for marks. Great English prof!
THE GOAT. attendance was just sending the notes from that day's lecture. slow marker but great feedback. no readings outside of class and we spent like 4 classes watching the movie avatar. pushes back deadlines since he understands we have other classes to manage. overall just a wholesome guy
Okay so my other rating starting with "THE GOAT" is actually for engl103 not engl102. My bad, I need new glasses
As a student who excels in math and science, English was always my lowest grade througout high school. BUT Dr. Defehr does a beyond amazing job of teaching, he actually gives helpful feedback and it is prominent that he wants his students to excel. The essay and assignment were very clearly explained, and he got me loving an English class.
Such a good professor. I hated english back in junior high and high school but this professor changed that for me. Very engaging and interesting class and gives good feedback on your writing. He lets us out a few minutes early and always understands that we might be tired but appreciates us coming in to attend class anyways. Wonderful professor!
Very amazing professor who cares of his students and gives very good, reasonable grades and feedbacks. Lectures are very easy to follow and the course load is not heavy.
was a harsh grader and took a lot of time to hand assignments back. took the course back in winter 2025
Awesome prof, I had him for engl 103 and 102 both and both the classes were a breeze. The only negative thing about him is he does not reply to his email but other than that easy class
