I liked him a lot. he never gave tests. he really only wanted us to learn without stress and had weekly response papers to do. just takes time to do the responses and vocab words.
he gave no tests only 1 page response papers that werent graded but you got full credit just for doing it. Journals are annoying so dont wait for the last night, trust me! I missed the final and got a "B" in the class. Lots of group discussions, he is a really nice guy and funny too. Definite slacker class
One of THE raddest teachers EVER! This guy rocks :)
Hilarious, engaging teacher. No tests and the weekly response papers are easy.
Very cool teacher no testing, he does provoke discussions however they can get old. I did learn a lot about my classmates and society, however its easy to take advantage of the no testing policy and not read, trust me.
Great teacher. It is a bit of a slacker class, but he does have a good teaching style that you will get a lot out of.
Excellent teacher. The more that you want to learn in his classes, the better you will do. I highly reccomend him for beggining or intermediate psych.

Kicks Azz!!!! great prof. and open to others ideas and thoughts, never puts you down for what you think, encourages your thinking process
Wayne is an awesome teacher. He listens to his students and asks you to relate what he lectures to whats going on in your life. Having him as my professor these past two semesters has been a blessing. Mr Downey Rocks!!!
Great teacher! Really interested in seeing each student succeed. It's a chill class.
He is one of the weirdest teachers that I have had, but in a good way. He really makes class fun and it's definitely not like any other class.
I love Mr. Downey. No one has anything bad to say about this guy. As long as you turn in all homework (which is vocab and a response mostly...easy) you will do great. He makes the material as interesting as possible for people who are only there because the class is required, which is most all of us. If you can, take this class!!
He is really passionate in this class which makes it easy to pay attention. The class always offers something interesting because racism and sexism is already a touchy subject. Go to class and turn in the response papers and you got yourself an A. He doesn't distribute tests, so if you are not a test taker this is the class for you!!
He is a great teacher his teaching method works. I always have a great laugh when ever I go to class. Turn in all your response papers and vocabulary and you’ll get an A. This is my favorite class this semester; I have learns a lot and hope to have him as my psychology teacher next year.
Amazing Teacher. Really knows his stuff. Liberal and Alternative. Funny too.
This is a very low key class. The teacher is nice but not at all what i expected. I was excited to take the class and throughout the semester that excitment dwindled. I dont feel like i learned very much. Good news... NO TESTS! Attendance is mandatory but you could miss a whole week of class and not really miss anything. Overall it is pretty easy!
Fantastic teacher, extremely interesting class, the only course work is essays to questions which are fun and profound, not tests! Only portfolio's of the essays
Dr. Downey is a really cool guy. He has a different and useful approach to teaching in which there are absolutely no tests, quizzes, midterms, or finals. You simply need to attend class, participate a bit, and write a weekly paper relating the subject matter to your personal life. There's also a short list of vocab each week, better than tests
Dr. Downey is really cool. Mostly he lectures right out of the book, so you can miss a class and not miss much. He is funny and really interesting. No tests, but weekly essays and vocab definitions do take a few hours (but they aren't hard assignments). Highly recommend taking this class because it's not the typical class which is nice.
I've actually taken three of his classes. He is a very intersting guy with a lot to say. Attendance is manditory, even if you do your work. A girl got a D just becuase she missed class so much, its worht going because there is very minimal and easy homework.
Very different professor - funny, goes on random topics & tries to incorporate exercises w/ the students in class. Found it hard to attend his classes because I didn't feel I was learning much & he can sometimes speak slowly or take frequent pauses. Would suggest that you sit in a class with him & see if he's right for you. Great man, not for all.
Very good class! Portfolio-based learning. You may feel awkward about him at first, but just because he's so different, in a good way. Lectures integrate lots of aspects of the material and real life. Wants you to grow and learn from your own work, so honest responses and insights about the reading are a must to get the most out of it.Easy A & fun.
wanted to pull my hair out
Summer 2008-He made it a fun class and gave us food for thought. Glad I took it!!
VERY easy to get along with.VERy laid back class, discussions are always good &interesting. He's funny and knows his subject extremley well. u learn alot about life in general even. easy class. good teacher!
VERY easy to get along with.VERy laid back class, discussions are always good &interesting. He's funny and knows his subject extremley well. u learn alot about life in general even. easy class. good teacher! and he likes feedback from students during discussions
No tests or homework -- just a journal.
Excellent teacher. His classes are very low key, but his lectures are interesting. He has a very unorthodox way of teaching, but that's not to say it's bad. I highly recommend him!
Lectures are almost entirely made up of anecdotal information, and the textbook isn't followed except for powerpoint sessions. If you're interested in this as a major, you'd probably be more prepared for your future if you took another professor. However, he is very easy.
DOWNEY RULES!!! I highly recommend thz teacher if u wana take thz class. All u do iz take notes, listen 2 lectures, write 2 papers, take a max. of 4 quizzes...the class only took 2 cuz he didnt assign da last two which was awesome in a way.
THIS CLASS IS A COMPLETE JOKE! This is the worst teacher I've ever taken a class with EVER he is completely unclear as to what the assignments are- when they are due, and what they are suppose to be about. He won't tell you your grade. Classes are pointless you learn nothing, and its all repetitive and a joke! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
Downey expects you to man up and do the assignments without holding your hand. Though he was unclear at times and that was very frusturating.
One of the most over rated professor i have ever had. Not a bad teacher, but definitely not amazing which is how many people make him out to be. The class was fairly easy but the tests were always worded very poorly. Would listen to others opinions but he would not explore them any further. A fairly easy A but i wouldn't take him again.
It's an easy A if you can put up with him. His lectures are horrible, I think he was more interested in making people like him than teaching. Expect to learn everything entirely from the textbook. He really believes he's delivering these earth shattering lectures that will change lives, but I found them shallow and silly.
This class is awful. Lectures are incredibly boring and have nothing to do with the textbook.
He is very thought provoking and easy to talk to.
Downy's a pretty good guy, his classes are almost completely lectures. but his tests are based on the lectures, i never had to open my book once. no homework except a couple lil essays. easy class all in all.
Lectures were sometimes really boring, but sometimes they were really kind of fun. Vocab quiz every week but you really needed to read the chapter to get a perfect score, no one rarely got a perfect score in my class. He is passionate about teaching and I learned a lot.
Downey is a cool guy and his lectures can sometimes be interesting but we learned basically everything from the book. His class isn't very hard but his quizzes are sometimes ridiculous and poorly worded. If you're really interested in Psychology, take a class with a different professor.
Lack of clarity and focus. It was difficult to understand exactly what was expected and what the purpose of lectures and other "events" in class were. I could not determine if he was experimenting or lacked self-awareness.I had the impression that he was purposely intimidating, making communication difficult. Probably a good person, and very funny.
Dr.Downey, despite his condition, is an interesting teacher. While his lecture occasionally does spiral off into different directions only barely related to Psychology, he nevertheless is helpful and relatively effective. Coursework was simple and effective, but quizzes were occasionally spotty.
Downey is a great guy, I currently have him and always seems to be distracted. He ALWAYS goes on a tyrant and makes no sense relating to the book. He got extremely lazy with quizzes this semester making us stack up. The quizzes are not hard at all, all right there in the book. I don't advise you to take him, you could have a much better teacher!
I would definitely recommend his class. Its really easy and he knows what he is talking about. All the tests are open book and most are take-home. His class can get a little boring sometimes and at first he seems kind of intimidating but he tries to tell jokes and keep it light. Overall a good teacher.
Dr Downey is passonate. However, I do not think a class with 70 kids is what he should be teaching. He would be a good teacher on a more specific subject matter, but in large lecture not great. Class is easy, the book is great, but if you want a deep understanding, I would look elsewhere. Great guy and an inspiration. Kept my ego in check
Choosing a class with Dr. Downey will be the best decision you have ever made. Not only is a genius in the field of psychology, his views on the world are incredible and very thought provoking.
Downey was a very nice teacher who wanted his students to succeed. Pretty much guaranteed A or B. Weekly quiz's and 1 research paper.
Definitely not a hard class, but dry. Lectures are mind numbing and he tries to tie concepts to life, but needs to expand on the books brief overview of these ideas. Vocab quizzes account for almost your entire grade, are poorly worded and don't correspond to the words on the syllabus. Smart guy, but probably more suited to teach grad level.
Was really looking forward to learning psychology, but I feel that Downey could have taught a lot more rather than go off topic frequently during lectures. Weekly assignment is to study vocabulary for a quiz, but quizzes were irrelevant to the vocab. However, I still enjoyed his class as he was pretty funny.
I really did not enjoy this class. He goes off topic often and his lectures can be unclear. The vocab tests you take do not relate to the words he gives you. I took a psych class in high school that the same material as Psych 1A, and the class was 100x more interesting. He has your best interest in mind, but I don't recommend taking this class.
Downey's teaching style is different from many professors he can get a bit off track at points throughout his lectures, but I think it is his way of engaging the class in critical thinking, to show how real world events relate to psychology in the most unexpected ways. His insights are the best part of his teaching style.
Okay, his class is kind of unorganized and all you really study is vocab words. He didn't go into psychology as much as I wanted to..or really at all. But he is a very very sweet man and wants us to learn. His charismatic personality really can brighten my day and if the class is what you expected(wasn't for me) just try and enjoy him/stories!
He's honestly a great teacher to have. Interacts with students regularly in class, pretty laid back, and he's not a harsh grader at all. Almost all of our quizzes we're take home. Definitely a good class if you want to learn without an overly academic and bone dry curriculum.
If you are interested in Child Psychology, don't take this class. He is not clear, goes off topic, doesn't care about the input of students unless he wants to argue with you. His tests are a joke, and our class ended up almost 1 month behind our schedule because he is so disorganized. If you want to learn, do not take him. You'll be disappointed.
Dr. Downey is a wonderful teacher who loves his career and students. He wants his students to be successful and continue with life long learning. I enjoyed his class.
Constantly off topic. great man, passion for topic and for students to succeed but horrible teacher.
Dr. Downey is one of the best and most passionate professors at the JC. I would take his class again. Dr. Downey looks at psychology through multiple perspectives. His class is greatly appreciated!! :)
take this teacher! Great class, awesome perspectives and great insight. I would take Dr. Downey's class again! :D
Don't get me wrong, Dr. Downey is a really nice man, but his teaching methods are not very good. What you learn in class vs what you learn in the book is very different. You never actually use the book in class, so be prepared to teach yourself. He is always off topic in class. I honestly didn't learn anything about child psych in his class
Dr. Downey is a really nice person, but his teaching methods didn't work for me. He is very off topic most of the time and anything you learn is class doesn't apply to you final or midterm. You don't ever use the book in class, so be prepared to teach yourself, cause that is your final
He shows interesting videos and discusses cool topics in class but they are never related to the what we were supposed to be learning. The book was never used in class and there were no assignments from it, but the test was strictly from the text. The "study guides" were not helpful and he always had TAs grade, never looking at our work himself.
Nice teacher! Just show up and study for the test and you should get an A..
Just show up to class and study and should get an A
Do yourself a favor and take someone else. Worst class I have ever taken. I couldn't tell you one thing I learned from Dr. Downey.
Professor Downey is the man! He knows and loves psychology and he will help you so long as you ask. Some of his lectures are a bit dry, but then again, it's psychology..... Definitely an easy A as long as you show up and participate. The book comes in handy, so definitely get it.
I took this class in the summer. There is one self assessment paper at the beginning of the class. After that we just had vocab quizzes, the final was also a vocab quiz. He lectures the entire class. Easy A
One of the best teachers at the JC. Super easy class but you still learn a lot learn a lot and it was fun. I signed up to take a class with him next semester. Dr. Downey is an amazing person.
After taking his class I feel glad to take it. Though I passed w/ a C, it was due to his help that I even passed at all. Would have failed w/out him. If he knows your circumstances and you openly communicate with him he will let you make up work and understand your situation. He is willing to help you through the semester if he sees you struggling.
Just show up to class, do all your assignments! You will probably get an A. I enjoyed his lectures, he was funny, easy going, and not intimidating.
Interesting subject, great guy, terrible teacher. Talks about irrelevant stuff each class period, doesn't lecture, and has no game plan. There are vocab quizzes every other week, and he doesn't even know half the answers to them. A couple easy papers. I know everyone likes an easy A but this class was a huge waste of my time. Not worth it.
Really easy going and loves what he does. He's a very easy person to talk to. Lectures can run stale sometimes but nothing you can't make your way through.
Dr. Downey's class intimidated me at first, but quickly became comfortable with him and the class structure. There are several, longer papers-they're easy to write and based on opinion, mostly. Dr. Downey loves his subject and gets you to think outside of the box. I've never felt so connected to a teacher, or worked so hard. Psych 4 Is rewarding
Dr. Downey's child psych was exceptionally inspirational and enjoyable. He's organized and gives clear instructions on reading and writing, and interesting essays. Easy to do well on the tests if you study the vocab. The in-class discussions were thought provoking. Dr. Downey is very passionate about children & education -it's contagious.
Dr. Downey was an amazing professor. His class was not difficult, but you will learn a lot, if you pay attention in class. His lectures were very detailed and you can tell that he is very passionate in teaching. His tests and quizzes are based on the vocab in the glossary of the textbook. There are some papers, but they were not difficult.
Super nice instructor. He really cares about his students. He covers the material in class. The videos he assigns are really good.
Tests are made up of vocab directly from book with notes allowed. One essay (self-reflection) that is super easy. Media responses every week, basically watch some videos and answer questions. He is super nice and grades super easy but his lectures can drag on. He cares about his students opinions and doesn't force his point of view.
I had Downey for a class in person and it was easy and I enjoyed it. Then I made the mistake of taking this one online. He is too strict in his grading and also just takes too long with his grading. It was a third of the way into the semester and I only knew the grades I had from week one. I gave very thorough responses and still only was given 83%
The structure to the class was lacking. It was the exact same thing every week - a long journal entry, a long content quiz, and a vocab quiz and media response. The media responses I enjoyed, taking the class online. The vocab quizzes were OK as well. The level of specificity and word count expected in content quizzes was moderately unreasonable.
It was an alright class but "the level of specificity and word count expected in content quizzes was moderately unreasonable" It was the exact same thing every week. I really enjoyed this class and I was honestly really intrigued with everything I have learned I would just never take it with this teacher online again.
Dr. Downey is a very nice and understanding professor. However, he does not provide any feedback on papers/homework, is a slow grader, does not provide any informational lectures/insight (all of the information you learn is solely from the textbook, I did not feel like he was actually the one teaching me), and he even forgot to post the final exam!
I did not like the way Downey formatted the class. Each of the components of the weeks module has 5 responses, which had to have 160+ words to get a good grade, so I just rambled to get to 160. He graded on quantity over quality, and it made me frustrated. If you struggle in online classes, I would prepare yourself for a lot of meaningless work.
I took this class over a year ago, but I remember it well. The format/grading is predictable and he introduces each chapter with a video of himself speaking (great!).He has a creative way of putting you in someone else's shoes. Observation: Top ratings on this site are for EASY professors--that's what you all want. You get what you put into life.
The amount of writing you have to do in this class is ridiculous, but as long as you fill in the word minimum you will get an A. I love to write, but dreaded this class. He doesn't really actually "teach" anything in his online class. Read the book, watch a video and write, write and write. Also takes FOREVER to grade, about 2 months behind.
A nice person, however he is not a good teacher, at least through Zoom. We had lectures once a week but they weren't really lectures. He had the book in front of him but would go off on tangents most of the time, talking the whole time. There were weekly chapter quizzes and journal entries, lots of textbook reading. Maybe he teaches well in person.
Hey there, I had to take this online class for a GED class, and let me cut it short- it was horrible. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
Very clear grading criteria, which I like. He uses grading rubrics and his course is organized and easy to follow. I feel like he offers information and gives you the space to form your own ideas. He doesn't ever push his own beliefs (whatever they may be) on anyone. I wish I could take another class similar to this one with him.
Wayne is an easy grader and a kind person, but as a professor is lacking in a lot of things. It has been over two months since any assignments have been graded and I have no clue what I will finish the class with because nothing is graded. I find it ironic that he assigns multiple assignments weekly, but cannot grade any of them- it feels unfair
Dr. Downey is a kindhearted professor and this class was easily one of my favorites ever. The semester before mine the class hw was to be turned in through writing but when i took it, it was through video submission which was defintely better. His criteria and content for exams are very clear which is rlly helpful.
Partially not Prof Downey's fault, but his online accessibility is lacking greatly. Nice enough guy, but he neglected to grant me access to the bulk of the assignments and it wasn't clear until a couple weeks in that other people were presented the full load of work. I messaged him about it and the response was two weeks late.
I took professor Downey two semesters for Psych1A and one of his human sexuality courses. The content was interesting, and the homework was straight from the textbooks. Open ended questions as well as vocabulary tests weekly based on about a chapter of reading. Easy to reach, understanding, really friendly over zoom, and doesn't grade that hard.
This professor was my introduction to the SRJC and I took his summer course of Psych4. I thought that, although online and there were no scheduled meetings, his videos showed his personality and his class was very educational. I loved the class, the curriculum, and the style of teaching. There are a lot of reading and quizzes but nothing too hard.
I really enjoyed Dr. Wayne's class. It was lecture based, which is harder for me, but overall the homework was super easy as long as you read the textbook. I loved the conversations we had in class, and I feel that I've learned a lot about human sexuality and how our brains work.
Dr. Downey is a very nice person. His expectations were very straight forward. There is a lot of homework/quizzes but it is not difficult, just time consuming. The main thing that I did not love about the course is how long it took him to grade and respond to emails. He graded about half the coursework at the last week. Still fun and interesting.
Professor Wayne's class covered fascinating topics, but the strict grading structure and high word count made it a struggle, especially online. Thankfully, resources like Unstuckstudy helped with effective study prep.
Dr. Downey was such a good professor. He cared about what the students thought about his class, making them join him through a Zoom meeting just so he could simply ask they questions about how they were liking the lectures and curriculum. Although he did take long to grade the assignments, he was an understanding and lenient teacher!
Dr. Wayne is very clear and has a fair grading system in my opinion. His class is organized, his assignments are easy to do, and in my opinion, the exam covered most of the concepts in the book (so in a way it's easy). I found his class very interesting and he also makes it fun at times. I would definitely take another class with him.
