decent final exam
No Comments
well.. lets put it this way... there used to be over 30 people in the class.. now theres only twelve...
starts out hard, so people drop out. but then he gets better and more helpful.
Good prof but over words his lectures. Also has a tendency to pause every few seconds and reflect silently on the previous few seconds. Gets kind of annoying after a while. Very brilliant though and definelty and individual.
Awesome! You have to take a course with this prof!
This guy is just great! He really knows his stuff and makes the class interesting.
Strange guy...Is in the middle of a conversation and pauses for 30 seconds while staring at someone...Easy mid-term though - open book...
And the award for the nutty professor goes to... even so, not a bad class.
he is very interesting and intelligent man; yet very strange. But i would take a class with him again.
A strange guy (the whole sudden staring silence thing is kinda creepy at first) but he *is* a philosophy teacher. If he wasn't a little wierd, it wouldn't work.
Always got the impression that he was laughing at us. Reminds me of John Nash from A Beautiful Mind . I could have sworn I heard him mutter eager young minds under his breath while looking at us.
I fell asleep in his class...!!!
this was a logic course. his notes and explanations were difficult, at times, to understand. I had to rely on the book for explanations. very odd guy. he puts ppl down sometimes and also throws chalk and people that come late. but i did learn
The worst Prof that has ever entered Kwantlen College. Very slow, over in voloved with his own thoughts, seems to go off into another world when teaching, never focuses on what we are suppose to do. Half the class left at break time every single class.
Wayne Fenkse is the most borning teacher that teaches at Kwantlen. No students are left in his class after the break. He constantly pauses during his teaching and only writes aboutprojects or books from the 1800's. If you are a geek teacher this is for u.
Borrrrring! He lectures right out of the text and writes a million notes on the board that I never needed to use. He gave quizes every week on the readings, but in-class essays were open book. Strange dude! Stares and pauses a lot.
strange guy.. stares into space while thinking during class.. however, no matter how much thinking he does, his notes are quite confusing. the tests are fairly easy though. the assignments are VERY helpful!! very easy final: open book!
He teaches the materials well, and the exams are also fairly easy.
Great teacher, cares about the material and the students. There to help if needed and very clear. Has a fun dry sense of humor that makes class a pleasure
He is good teacher. He teaches concepts far more clearly then they are in the book and often gives shortcuts and more efficient methods to go about logic problems.
excellent!!!
Great professor! Loves to help his students.
a very good teacher, he keeps you awake and is halairious!!!Ask him how JLo is doing.
He throws chalk at students and talks about J-Lo. Enough said.
He's not mean but he actually throws chalk at students (always misses) kinda funny.
very confusing. often dunno what hes teaching himself. all of a sudden he would say that everything he wrote on the board was wrong. but his final is opened book, anyhow, it doesnt make a difference. hes really boring altho he tries 2 joke wif us
If Wayne is in Langley, then if Wayne is at Kwantlen, Then if Wayne is in class, Then Wayne is likeyl hucking a pice of chalk at your head :D But he's a nice guy and somtimes makes you laugh, once you get used to how he talks :)
Horrible. BOORING. Run away! Notes are unorganized. Finishes writing them, then changes it. Tries to be funny but he isn't. Stops in mid sentence and stares off into space. A lot. You are ignorant and stubborn if you don't agree with him. Tests are essays
easy marker
Good, clear, lectures. Fair marker, good comments. Breaks the monotony with pop culture jokes...in my opinion, he doesn't throw enough chalk at the ignorant students.
He is boring, very boring. All the tests are essays and he is VERY picky. Everything has to be done a certain way.
This is the most boring teacher ever! Think of him as a cross between a very monotone Dr.Evil. He has a very slow and deliberate tone that will be sure to you right to sleep in class. His only redeeming qualities are that his tests are fairly easy.

I miss wayne! The logic subject sucked but the fact that he's such a cool guy who tried very hard to make it understandable for every one made it enjoyable. He's so funny and generous too: He bought my class icecream on the last day of class. What a guy! Crappy subject, great teacher.
He Pauses alot when he talks, but if you like to argue this is your class, he buts the class against it'self and makes for a very fun seminar. He is also notorious for breaking chalk, sometimes while throwing it, but mostly just on the board or dropping it. He's a fun teacher, and not too hard.
It is so true about the chalk chucking! He really is a great guy though! Probably one on the most interesting classes! definitely an interactive class!
He was my first college prof can be boring at first but when you actually listen to him he's very nice and enlightening. He inspired me and still my favorite prof until now.

this class is easy if u pay attn and read everything.not recommended for dumb idiots who never show/listen and put up bad reviews Wayne is a very dedicated and helpful prof...at 1st his class may confuse u but soonafter u will love it. tests are fairly acceptable.. take his classes u'll love em
Wayne’s an awesome prof… he is dedicated to his field of work, and seems to enjoy every minuet of it. If you have a question, he is more than willing to clarify, and give further ‘background info’ that always helps…. Keep the 'passions ruling'!!!!
Boring classes.....
He's an OK teacher. The stuff wasnt too hard to learn. He is annoying with his notes. If your one of those people who can learn on their own through textbooks.. take this class. Otherwise, run. Unorganized notes + boring teacher = *BOOM*
EASIEST COURSE EVER!!!
I am a mature student and have found Wayne to be a good lecturer. He's approachable, helpful and doesn't let you go away without making sure you understand. I would take another course with him. If you're bored in his class then you're probably not paying attention.
I'm currently in his class, and i find the class to be easy but he marks a bit low and tends to choose his best students against the rest of the class, if i fail it's not because of my intellegence, but becuase philosophy just isn't my thing, mind you this is only one of the three philosophy courses i'm taking..and the other ones i'm aceing
Leaves long, weird gaps in his sentences. Stares off into space in the middle of speaking for several seconds at a time. Boring class, just read the book.
the best teacher ever mixes up some times but cool to be around with
Whoever said hes a good teacher is obviously a LAIR because Wayne is the wrost teacher you will ever have in your life. He makes no sense and he MARKS VERY HARD..NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS unless you like failing.
rather boring class - human thics turned into animal cruestly. regretted taking the class until i realised how easy of a marker he was. EASY CLASS. you can sleep though the classes and still ace the tests and essays. for the tests he gives a list of questions before and chooses about half for the test
OMG! most boring class in the entire world!! he like stares into space while giving the lecture and pauses its like he is giving you a nasty look then blabs on and on. you can actually hand in anything late and not get docked.. he is soo bad.. Horrible class! DO NOT take it.!!
Really odd. But super nice, quite intelligent, and will throw chalk at you if you give the answer that is morally akward. . .
He is a bit odd, but quite entertaining. Very organized. His notes seem confusing but are prepared perfectly for his tests. He literally does throw chalk if you talk during class. Wants students to get involved and voice their thoughts. You get what you're willing to give. He marks late assignments with full marks so maybe he needs to harden up.

Very wierd professor, i witdrew rite away just because i found the way he talked to be very annoying, he would say somethin then stop, for like 10 seconds, then continue with the same sentence, every class! we would have probably finsihed the course in half the classes if he would talk faster. i jus had a bad feeling about him, maybe its the class

By far the worst philosophy prof I've ever had. I recommend anyone taking his classes transfer to any of the other phil classes. He's also very unclear with what he wants, and when he tries to describe what he wants, it’s still unclear. His lectures are unimaginably boring and the textbook is useless. Save your money and your GPA, don't take hi
Fenske is intelligent and well versed in philosophy. He fully understands the social sciences and does a fair job of teaching students.
Money prof. Yeah he pauses and stares off into space but it's hillarious. He's a cool guy and ethics is a breeze/
Fenske is a breeze. Plus he's quirky which makes class that much more interesting. Also, probably one of the easiest markers in the philosophy department!!
He gets off topic really easily, so sometimes you'll be talking about Philosophy and then two minutes later, you'll be talking about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. His notes are a bit difficult to follow from the blackboard but after a bit, you get used to it.
His essay questions on the exam were mostly explained by HIM in class...the book did not help, so DON'T SKIP CLASS! But the definitions etc can all be read in the book. Fenske is different and does stare into space...awkward. But he's super smart and is a fair marker.
Fenske is a great teacher overall. Sometimes class get really really boring and other times its very entertaining. His exams are mostly based on stuff he explained in his notes. Be in class and pay attention!! Very smart teacher I must say, he knows what hes talking about and does get you to think about stuff you may have never thought of.
this prof is not a good one its a waste of time and money to be in his class
Wayne is as awesome teacher, he definately knows what he is talking about. No texts required which is nice, and his tests are easy cause he pretty much gives you the questions hes asking on the test so you can prepare for them. Great teacher overall.
Nice teacher. Class can be boring sometimes but other times it could be interesting. Knows what hes talking about. Makes a good connection with the students. Exams are easy!
Good Prof. You need to attend the class to get a good mark becasue his exams are based on lectures. He's entertaining, smart and a nice guy.
okay teacher. SOME topics are interesting, you deff need to go to class. But easy marker if you take PROPER NOTES!! but boring at times. . . it drags on and on.
Spaced out is the best description for this guy. He'll start a sentence and then just stop in the middle of it, stare into space, and then continue. Notes are messy and illegible, but essential to doing well on his exams. Make sure you attend class if you want any hope of passing. Good luck.
definitely hated this class! he has his favourites and is very unprofessional! If you do bad on one test.. he will continue to give you low marks on other tests! i would no recommend this teacher to anyone
Fenske was a good teacher. I liked him. He knows what he's doing. He is a bit strange, he admitted it himself, and correctly said that to major in philosophy you have to be a bit strange. ps strange is good, considering what's normal for teachers, and society in general. He will help you after class if you had trouble. I would take his class again.
Best prof in kwantlen easy maker very funny guy. Ya somtimes he is boring but he works with the material, he doesnt throw chalk no more, all in all i highly recomend him
He's weird, everyone agrees. Funny though. Kind of a hard marker but if u go to his classes then u can see how he relates to ur perspectives and what he disagrees with. That's good prep for exams. Gives exam questions a week before & allows for u to work on your answers in that time. All in all, boring, weird, but I'm pretty sure all Philo profs ar
What can I say? He's interesting, not a hard marker but a weird marker. Here's the deal, he's not bad at all. You just need to take your time with his exams and make sure you're covering what he asks for. You can do well in his class, if you think like he does.
He is quite entertaining, which is nice to have in a subject as dry as formal logic. People seem to do really well on his exams or the complete opposite. Apparently there are other logic profs that are easier than him.
Taking basic logic, I find it very hard but I'm not blaming him. Some students do very well, so I know the problem is me. Pay attention. He doesn't assign homework, but gives plenty of practice sheets. Do them! His personality isn't for everyone, I find him entertaining though. If your late he will often make a lighthearted crack, keep that in mind
Avoid him. He pauses mid sentence, grades unfairly (100 marks on a 6 question exam, and takes off huge chunks for not getting it 100%), doesn't post all the solutions and goes way too fast (18 rules in first month, maybe 5 extra rules for the rest of the semester). WORD OF CAUTION: Take 4 classes AT MOST in this class. You need lots of time.
Lectures can be boring but the material was still interesting. Grading is very lenient I feel, I never got a high mark but I never expected one. People say he's weird which is true (unexpected pauses) but I still thought he was an awesome teacher and actually funny at times.
Don't take him unless you really want to fail.
I've taken two classes with Wayne now. He's a great prof! His notes are very clear. He gives you the test questions prior to the test so if you study hard and have decent writing, acing the exam should be no problem.
Excellent teacher, makes a lot of facetious jokes. Major points for not requiring a textbook, he is sensible enough to guide you to online resources.
First class he stated that if we attend every class and do 50% of the questions on each assignment, we are good to pass. I missed 2 classes, spent few hours doing assignments the day before each exam. Got 88,100,98,65 on the four exams(25% each). Great Prof, clear and precise, very inspirational. Our class loved him.
He's a quirky but helpful prof! Important: do the worksheets he gives you and don't skip class! Do both and you'll do well in the course. That being said, the course is challenging if you're not mathematically inclined. But Wayne asserts that as long as you do enough practice, you'll be ok. He's there to help if you need it, no textbook is a plus.
Very clear grading system with 4 tests of 25% each. Gave us a lot of practice assignments to prepare for the tests. No textbooks, clear and concise lectures. Happy to help during or after the class. Can easily get A+ if you practice for an hour after each class.
Great prof. Halrious and very helpful. Plus, he gives minimal amount of homework.
Wayne is a nice prof. However, I took this class for extra credit and it definitely has been kicking my butt. I am not someone who is good at math or things similar to it so this class is very difficult for me. Wayne is super kind and always willing to meet during office hours which I appreciate - but I feel like he does not explain the concepts.
Straightforward prof. No filler textbook, quizzes, labs, assignments, papers; just 4 exams each worth 25%. Gives decent lectures and posts all the assigned exercises online on day 1 so you can work at your own pace. Show up to take notes and do the practice questions and you'll be fine. One of the few decent profs at KPU.
A really terrible prof. Bases your entire grade on 4 hard(ish) tests, no assignments for marks. No textbook: the "textbook" is his handwritten notes which are a mess. Spends entire classes mindlessly writing solutions to problems on the board with no explanation why. Bad grading structure, bad at teaching concepts and he should honestly retire.
He is not a good professor at all. If you want to pass and want to boost up your GPA please take this course from any other professor. If one student do cheating he will give penalty to whole class.
Wayne is the worst teacher in the philosophy program. I've had him for 2 different courses now and both times were bad. He doesn't know how to convey simple concepts to students and spends more time thinking of bad analogies than explaining the concepts. If you have a choice, take this course with any other of the teachers, they're all better.
Though Wayne is a good person, his teaching style is old school. Meaning that all classes are lectures with very little interaction with the students. His grading system is based soley on the performance of 4 tests with no other avenues of earning better grades. If you fail a couple of these exams you will ( in my opion) fail the the course.
Doesnt teach you basis for logic eg truth tables, introduces too many rules without explaining them and why they are logical, only grades by 4 tests and takes lots of marks off if small mistake. Will solve questions on board with no student interaction, it seems like teaching is a chore to him
Biggest regret of my life - taking this course with prof. Fenske. No interaction with students. No explanation of the rules and tips or tricks to employ them. Too much obsessed with the board and markets. It seems as if he is there not to teach but to practice logic , all by himself. Not at all understanding and cooperative.
Wow, I really liked this course. He occassionally droned a bit, but usually it was great. You either get the logic or you dont, and you have to be willing to put in the study time. Lots of tests. He likes to joke with students and make the topic relatable as much as possible.
Super dull and boring. All he does is read the notes he posts on moodle but his notes are more like an essay. Only 3 tests to do but they are 30% each. Tests are all written as he hates multiple choice. Not much humour or interaction with students.
Grades with only 4 tests throughout the term. He doesn't have any assignments or homework to add something to your grade. Take any other prof rather than this one.
Graded by three tests, 30% each and 10% attendance. He talks a lot and it can be hard to stay awake, he's not good at including the class in the discussion which makes it hard to listen to his monotone voice. Frankly, the contexts discussed in this class could easily be made fun, motivational and interesting when done in the right way, w/o Wayne
I was pretty familiar with the material going into this class, and somehow he still makes it confusing. Everything is graded solely on four tests, which is unfortunate considering this is a hard subject for a lot of people. Complains about kids these days and will only answer involved questions over the phone - seriously.
is not helpful outside of class, if you miss a class good luck passing
4 tests worth 25% each. Uploads on youtube so no interaction with other students. Hard to learn anything. Would not reccomend.
He's a nice guy. However, for the new style of online classes he isn't the best option and I don't think its his fault entirely but 25% for 4 tests to determine final grade is very hard. His lectures are recorded which is a plus but I don't think for such a hard class already he could try to be informative in a subject
No interaction with students
Do not take him for PHIL1150. Do yourself and your GPA a favor. His "would take again" percent is 12% for a reason. Unusually difficult exams, no student interaction, pre-made YouTube lectures... I can go on. Similar to Puqun Li's teaching.
As registration opens, I'm here to recommend that you DON'T take him. You will thank me later. Most people withdrew from his classes and many people failed his tests. You are only graded with exams the whole course for his PHIL classes!
KPU must have some of the worst PHIL profs, wow, I have no words...
one of the worst teachers and classes i have ever taken, everything is uploaded on youtube exams are hard and include things not covered in youtube lectures, no student interaction, all graded with exams
Nice man, incredibly, incredibly boring class. I knew the material from a previous class- Thankfully! I didn't learn at all in his class, but got a B+ based on my previous knowledge of the material, which was taught by a different prof. Would like to avoid his classes forever but may be forced to take Logic with him just to avoid Puquan Li's class!
all these reviews are right lol. idk how this prof is still employed. don't waste your money on YouTube videos his emails aren't helpful either and his calls never cover subject matter. this class covers everything under the sun for an intro class & is more demanding than my 4th year classes. defs do NOT recommend! save your mental health!
Terrible. Doesn't even show up to his own Zoom meetings and then makes up excuses for not coming. Uses over a year old YouTube lectures to teach, and doesn't care to interact with students, or reply to emails. Course is graded solely by 4 exams. The exams are difficult and he doesn't give you enough time. One of the worst experiences of my life.
So we have 4 exam and each is 25% of final grade. I kind like this.
He is a very good teacher. All you need is to give time to listen to the lectures which are quite long because the subject is really very difficult. If you miss the first unit test or do not completely focus on the lectures you are going not to do good as a whole because every lecture is connected to the previous one.
Doesnt respond to emails within 2 business days
i dont know how this guy still has a career. shocking really. there's so much to say about this pathetic human but the rest of the reviews are plenty to paint the picture. absolute failure by KPU keeping him employed this long. what a joke you are Wayne Fenske. CLOWN. STAY AWAY.
waste of time.
Always available for help. Do the work, you'll get help and pass. High # of cheating students dealt with deans office. He's a good teacher if you pay attention and have questions. During online class, no one would interact or ask questions High ratio of immigrants seeking Canadian citizenship who didnt do work to pass, just cheated.
Professor Fenske's PHIL1150 class can be really good or really bad depending on you The good: There's barely any work, everything is optional. The bad: You have 4 tests worth 25% EACH. He also seems dismissive about teaching, relying on video lectures. If you are having trouble with the material, you won't pass no matter how hard you try.
Nice professor
I paid for the course to watch YouTube videos which he recorded 3 years ago. wasted my money and time by taking this course. the amount of material he wants his students to cover is beyond first year courses and quite complex. he makes exams just by putting 3 to 5 questions which are the hardest and expect all students to answer them. Worthless!
To say this prof teaches is a huge understatement, he doesnt even teach at all. All he does is supply you with his youtube lectures from 3 years ago and expects you to understand them. And to be graded from 4 tests worth 25% each is really bad. If you mess up on one youre basically screwed for the rest of the semester. Avoid him at all costs.
He expects you to learn an entire subject with only pre recorded lectures during covid times. only 4 test each worth 25% of your overall grade, no assignments no nothing. half the class dropped and one guy fainted during one of his exams and someone had a mental breakdown. stay away from this prof.
There are only 4 tests in the whole course. His lectures are prerecorded 2020 lectures that provide very little help. In the first test, someone had a mental breakdown and in the second exam, someone had to be taken out of the room to an ambulance. Had to drop the course despite doing well on the tests because the environment was simply too hostile.
Using 3 year old youtube lectures to teach, alot of students withdrew from the course. Focus on the handouts and you will be able to pass
Probably the laziest prof I have ever taken a class with. He uses online video lectures as his teaching material and they aren't even helpful. And there are only 4 tests that are part of the mark inlcuding the final exam. He just isn't competent at teaching and is not helpful. If you like wasting money or time take his class if you want to fail.
don't take this professor. 4 hard test with pre recorded lectures on YouTube from 4 years ago. you will have brain aneurism.
If you are an international student, please save yourself, take your mental health a priority and dont take his classes. I am currently suffering from his class right now. DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THIS GUY.
Uses very outdated lectures (most of them are very hard to grasp) All of the topics suddenly spike in difficulty with no explanation (this was very noticeable in the 2nd exam onwards) Only graded by 4 VERY HARD exams I had no choice but to take him because i need my last credit T^T
Worst
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He just took 4 exams and no quizzes and assignments at all. If you want to pass this course then don't take class with this professor.
The worst professor you'll ever meet. Prepare to work hard and fail anyway.
You're basically on your own. The whole course is 4 exams for 25% each, learning from four year old youtube videos. No replying to emails. Whatever you do, try to get a passing grade within the first 3 exams. Trying to get a passing grade till the last exam, while you're also studying for finals for other courses is a no go.
Only 4 tests constitute final grade. teacher is using 4 year old YouTube videos which he explains the content very poorly, although the content is very difficult. I have had to seek help from other teachers and other textbooks. I am a A+ student in all other courses and am probably going to fail this class miserably. Would not recommend.
4 Exams worth 25% each. All lectures are posted on Youtube, so you'll be teaching yourself everything. If you're not strong in logic and speaking english you WILL struggle. My best advice is to practice his homework assignments RELIGOUSLY as they're very similar to his exams. He's not an excellent teacher, but he isn't terrible either. Good Luck!
tips: do all posted assignments, you need lots of practice to familiarize yourself with the rules. make sure to get atleast 50% for each exam to pass. For proving exams, make sure to confidently/securely answer two numbers or more that constitute 50% of the exam (if you simply want to pass)-Note: a mistake in the middle of proving gets less marks.
NEVER, DON'T EVEN TRY. It will be 3 months of pain
Professor Fenske's class is demanding but engaging. Attend lectures, utilize unstuck ai for study prep, and you can excel despite the heavy workload. Not for the faint of heart, but rewarding for dedicated students.
His coursework is just 19 YouTube Videos, which were recorded in 2020. You only have 4 tests carrying 25% each. On paper, this sounds amazing, but in implementation, this is bad. You have to watch the videos and try to understand on your own. He thinks it's one size fits all, but unfortunately, every person learns differently. Withdrawn at the end.
Very bad experience. NEVER AGAIN!!!! Read his YouTube comments, would not recommend
Teaches the class by his youtube lectures that are posted online 5 years ago, not by the professor in PRESENT. Some videos are 2 hours long. 4 tests worth 25% each. I understood his lectures and did all of his practice homework questions however his tests were 2x harder. Had to withdrawal because his teaching methods didnt work on me. Waste of $$$
This professor mainly teaches by giving old YouTube videos to watch, and for most of the course you're completely on your own. There are four exams, each worth 25%, and they are quite difficult. The exams questions often go what's covered in the exercises.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. SAVE YOUR LIFE & SANITY
