He's stingy about giving marks and picky and not lenient at all.
he is actually very nice if you go to his office hours.
Hard marker and difficult tests but interesting lecturer
alright..could use better notes, very vague material.
Very interesting lecturer, very poor/vague notes, extremely stingy marker.
Incredibly intimidating, but very nice if you get to know him. HARD/LONG EXAMS.
Good prof...vague, scattered notes...too enthusiastic about ecology!
his enthusiasm is REFRESHING!!!
project makes class not worth taking but he's nice guy that gives bad notes
notes unclear, but super helpful in office hours
His notes are useless. Hard marker on midterms. Not an effective instructor.
as for notes he gives none..hard exams..very boring..buuut hes very nice
His teaching methods are really awkward
didn't take notes, nice guy, an exam based solely on common sense, very easy
excellent person, very dedicated to teaching ecology, very helpful, tough exams
never gives note
interesting, loved going to class
occasionally insulting comments to the class, otherwise okay

a little too cocky--needs a major improvement on personality.
needs to have better notes, if not, HAVE notes.
Helpful during office hours. Unclear lecture notes. Tough grader. Funny instructor!
Actually focusses on concepts, and values intelligence instead of memorization. Too bad for all of you who don't have original ideas.
Get past the ego, and he's one of the best profs i've ever had.
Takes too long to explain concepts. Class is as exciting as eating cardboard.
He should not be teaching 1st year level courses. Not only is he intimidating, it takes a while to get used to his style of teaching. As a 1st year student, I found it difficult. He told us at the start of class that 3 in 8 would fail. Class Avg was 52%!
Goodey is the best prof I've had in all of my years in University. His lectures are above average, but when you approach him during office hours, he's extremely helpful, and helps you think. He is a great reference for help in all of my university years.
extremely productive lecture. you don't even need to go to lectures or office hourse to get and A. The best biol121 prof. Don't get scared because he tell's you last year's average, his tests are quite easy to understand even without studying
Not the easiest tests...but makes u learn/think a lot...great help in office hours...overall a great prof...one of the best ive had so far
Complete waste of my time...worst prof ever...and i've had hasinoff
Good guy, bit of an ego, but willing to help and answer any questions
forgot to mention, he is the only biology teacher i know who doesnt do research. but he thinks he knows everything. I think he doesnt have research because noone would give him a grant. Listening to his lecturers makes me feel smarter than him.
I thought he was great! he's one of my favourite profs, i just loved biology 121!! you have to know how to take notes from what he says cuz he doesn't write stuff down much.
Hard midterm. Med-Easy final. Don't worry if you fail the midterm because the scaling is decided well. Insatiable appetite for teaching-I doubt he gets paid for extra office sessions, and will sacrifice himself to teach overtime. He takes the 25 bus.
Unstructured classes that tend to wander. Very willing to help though.
Goodey knows what he's talking about, and people would always argue with him but everybody knows he's right. He doesnt waste time with stupidity. He has fun in lecture... and his tests are easy, if you disagree you must be one of those arts students
Nice guy, and very helpful. Clarity of instruction is very poor. Tries to get you to apply knowledge in exams which is good, but does not teach well enough for you to have a strong understanding of material. Lecture interesting but all over the place.
Very boring class. You learn nothing at all! He says tests aren't memorization, but thats all they are. If you don't answer exactly word for word like their answer keys, you'll do bad. Or maybe you marked by a random number generator!
he wants you to be able to integrate, but doesn't see you through it. whole course lacked structure, not more than some bones and a few shreds of meat when you think about it
Nice, interesting teaching style. Tends to think one-way so you better be good at convincing if your answer is different than his. Overall, great class. Tests not easy.
There were times in this course when I thought I was about to die from the slow agonizing pain of listening to goodey's as-matter-of-fact tone of voice. The course lacks substance, productivity, and structure. Goodey acts as if he is always right and I fi
What kind of professor has a debate about Science vs. GOD? He's very unorganized about his lectures making them even more boring as they drag along. Honestly, his midterms are marked with a far too picky scheme set by him =(
And I thought Biol 303 bored me to death. This guy is so boring I can actually feel my brain cells commiting suicide. Wanna cure insomnia? Come to this class. And the exams MUST be answered word for word. It's ecology, not even a real science.
Goodey is the kind of prof who knows what he's doing. His teaching style is great. All he does is embellish the same principles over and over. Very kind, helpful. Midterm is just like final.
Very good prof and was always there to help

He gave absolutely no notes in his lectures and showed slide after slide of some animals he was studying, which was irrelevant. Midterma average was 51%. My tip is to go to his final exam tutorial and ask tonnes of questions cuz that is what saved me
In lecture, he explains a lot of the ideas with examples and diagrams, which was very useful. He had good exam review sessions. Exams were cahllenging, but not too hard.
One of my best profs at University. He teaches a brutal research-oriented course, but it is definatley on eof the most worthwhile courses you can take in Uni. UNlike other boring lecture-based subject, Wayne's class prepares you for life after undergrad, adn he's a gret guy too!
Though not the greatest professor, he would scale mountains to help students with ANYTHING. He always will remember you and gives you awesome tips if you're in a bind with courses. So-so prof, outstanding person.
excellent prof...top notch, not easy to get high grade but very engaging and well spoken
mean.. but kind of cute.
He tries to be helpful, and is very considerate to students but I find his lectures very confusing. I have no idea what his point is when I come out of class. I think he needs to be more "organized" and "CLEAR" like Turkington.
Easy class. But I hate going to field trip.
A very supportive and encouraging professor!
Try avoiding this class if you can. Our section midterm average was 49% compared to Turkington's section of 75%. you do the math.
Graded on midterm, final and 25% on tutorial. Goodey uses overheads but for the most part he just talks, so go to class. For midterm and final look at previous exams. Some qns were EXACTLY the same qns from previous years. Nice man, ok prof. Best if you take course w/ Goodey + Turkington split.
you will NOT get away with just memorizing definitions in this class. you have to actually get the whole concept. go to all of the office hours he offers before tests, and make sure you can do all of the practice questions he gives. this guy sure as hell doesn't test like other science profs, and he marks hard. know everything.
A course in which you should attend class and take notes on what he says. Do not try to simply memorize the material; you must understand the big picture. With interest, a decent grade should follow. Very friendly and approachable person.
Overall, a good prof. Gives lots of examples. Very understanding. Once you realize that it's okay to just sit and listen in class, it's actually quite interesting. Don't bother copying down all the fancy drawings. Make sure you write EVERYTHING RELEVENT that you know on the final-- it's very picky.
sometimes helpful, i guess...
Very supportive and helpful. I had a midterm and a term paper due on the same day as the final for this course, and he allowed me to take the final a couple of days later so I can get my other assignments done on time. Few notes, mostly drawings, but the examples he says are useful for the tests. Go to the review sessions. Great person overall.
Fantastic instructor and a great mentor. I took three classes with him and he's tough, but I learned so much. This class is what started me thinking about grad school.

He teaches well and is able to convey ideas, but his test questions are just bizarre. He wants you to think and approach a question in a particular fashion, and if your mind unfortunately is not tuned into his brainwave you're a goner. He's a good guy, despite hints of arrogance, but his testing methods need an overhaul.
too many graphs from him...n you have to make sure you realli understand the concepts to write his exam questions...review sessions are definitely helpful....but his lectures were a bit boring...
Puts a lot of effort into developping concepts to make everything absolutely clear. A feature most students would appreciate. Tests are alright as long as you do practice so you know what you're getting into. All around good prof. ****
Boring lecture. Too many graphs to understand. I think he made most of final questions. You really need to go to his review sessions to understand what he's been lecturing..haha.. If you know the graphs, then you'll be fine~
You have to be willing to think on your own to enjoy the class because he's more into the 'philosophy' of science so not many hardcore facts are needed. He's a concepts man thus it is easy to obtain high marks in. Also, be ready for anti-religious sentiment so if you're sensitive to that, don't say I didn't warn you. I loved his stance.
Best prof I have ever had. Seems scary in class, but if you go and speak with him, show that you are making an effort he will help you ALOT! He is kind, and interesting. He doesn't just spit out facts and definitions and make you memorize them. He wants to you to understand! Took many classes with him and will remember him as my fave prof!
I never planned to major in Ecology but Dr. Goodey is certainly an amazing prof. Very nice and approachable. He put a lot of effort preparing for class. One word, he's GREAT!
Goodey is amazing. Far and away the best prof I had in first year because he has this rare tendency to ask his first year students to think. Can't say enough good things but...what's with the cats? Also, text was ridiculously expensive and not much used for the course.

Goodey ruined this class for me. His lectures are extremely vague with no solid notes. Some things were just completely confusing. And he marks hard. Bad prof!
doesn't have any concrete notes. seems to make thigns more complicated than they really are. textbook was good background knowledge but really have to problem solve on own in this course
This guy sucks so bad it aint even funny. He just says bunch of non-exam material crap and then continue his terrible jokes for the rest of the class. It's hard to study when you dont know WHAT to study, and that is how Mr.Goodey teaches.
By far the worst professor I have ever had in UBC. Lectures are ambigious and unclear, the marking scheme of his sections of the exams are highly specific to what only he wants as an answer despite how ambigious ecology really is
Goodey really makes you learn concepts which means memorization won't help you.Focus on lecture notes and be able to apply knowledge to new situations. Exams ask general questions and expect specific answers, very frustrating! It's difficult to get over 75% on exams. Tutorials are easy if you get help from the TA beforehand. A good, helpful teacher.
Goodey did sometimes bore me by taking a backassward way around presenting material but overall I think he's alright. He really puts effort into his teaching and loves it. If you ask him a question he will do all he can to make sure you understand. His exam questions are difficult though. Blast you Turkington! Why did you have to leave!?!?
Dr.Goodey is a dedicated prof. He has a good sense of humour. His notes are pretty straightforward but you still need to keep up with your readings. He is quite clear about what is expected on his exams. Be sure to check out his website for tips on how to do well in his course. Don't miss his review sessions, they're really good.
He's an excellent professor. Down-to-earth and friendly. Bothers to remember students'names. Bio 302 is an interesting course. Since the concepts are simple it's more about application. Don't hesitate to ask questions during office hours, he is very helpful. His door is always open.
Strengths: funny guy that doesn't take it too seriously, clearly loves teaching and ecology. Weaknesses: Tries to make simple material overly complicated, tests are very difficult, he tends to beat points into the ground, goes on and on about irrelevant examples, can be condescending.
Lecture style takes a while to get used to. Don't bother taking really precise notes, they won't be that useful - especially for exams. His exams are long, hard, vague, and rely on risky assumption rather than material that he actually teaches. Textbook is not really used. Exams yielded failing averages. Too hard for first year. Nice guy though.
Goodey is a wonderful person outside of class, however he is an extremely tough marker for first year. If you expect to learn a lot, but get a horrible grade (yes even if you study 8 hours a day for this class, you probably wont get an A) you should take this class. Be prepared to think a lot, and in depth. Learn to think like goodey, and your set.
Very condesending attitude, not very helpful outside class. Expects everyone to think like ecologists but really, most are probably taking it b/c its required, not for interest. Failure rate 8% which isn't bad but it was a long and hard mt. 5 marks to draw graph representing how the given graph would change?!
very easy to fall asleep in his class because he doesn't give any notes. but then if you just pay attention and take your own notes you'll do well in this class. it takes forever to understand the concepts but once you do, you will find his exams extremely easy. There wasn't much work you had to do for the course..just try to pay attention in class
The single best word to describe this man is pompous. Let me say it again: POMPOUS. He is a bit delusional in thinking that he knows everything or that ecology is an intellectual pursuit. He has a knack for simplification and speaking for excessively long periods of time without saying anything. He is a nice guy and is willing to help.
Wayne is quirky and extremely opinionated (against creation) with impossible midterms and boring lectures, but thanks to scaling of grades, isn't really that difficult.
Prof. Goodye is a nice prof. he is helpful but give hard exams. I do recoomend him and you will be fine
He's actually a pretty good guy. He makes the material relevant, interesting and note taking is easy with him. Most of the definitions are online which is nice and he'll make jokes every so often to lighten it up. I found it interesting and I took away more from this one class than any other single class in the past 2 years.
he didnt give very good notes so you have to depend on yourself. but just listening to the lectures is very interesting. he's a very interesting and influential speaker...almost made my cry during his "the world is coming to an end and there's nothing you can do about it" lecture - please don't think i'm a tree-hugger.
i hear he's cool to talk to during office hours, i wouldn't know i didn't go. heard horror stories about wayne...... lo and behold they were ALLLL true. TAKE THE SECTION WITH ROY TURKINGTON, at least you'll do well on the midterm which is his material. i hear gary bradfield is worse than wayne is (hard to accomplish!). final=killer, good luck!
Dr. Goodey is a fantastic teacher. He is very hard and you must go to class and pay attention. Even though you will probably not do that well, you will begin to think in a new way.
Good teacher, fantastic to talk to during office hours. Takes questions in class very well. A bit of a cynical pessimist, but fun none-the-less.
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that UBC doesn't generate many ecologists. Some complain that the exams are hard, but in reality, it is that the material is simply glossed over. Don't read into their BS that they "simply challenge you with critical thinking". Don't for a second let them make you feel stupid. I have an 83 avg and i got 72.
you will fail his class.
Very passionate about bio, but an extremely hard grader. Requires knowledge beyond first year. Only those with VERY good critical thinking will succeed. Way harder than all the other BIOL 121 profs. Don't take his section if you want to pass.
Complete travesty of a professor. Arrogance flows out of his breath like water flows out of a running tap. Not only is he pompous and cynical, but rude and disrespectful to the class, and also has a condescending attitude that tries to make your intelligence look like rubbish. I do not recommend this bloke at all.
Must go to his classes for his notes. He talks about nothing alot of the times. and his notes are not very helpful. His tutorial sessions are a waste of time unless you have questions.. but then use his office hours. Try to avoid if possible. Nice guy though
True, the midterm was pretty hard - but if you learn how to answer his questions correctly - like designing a proper experiment, then you'll end up doing fine. Obviously 75% of the class is not going to fail in the end, only ~ 7% will. Besides that Goodey is an AWESOME prof - very interesting in lectures and study groups/office hrs = great!!!
Really a nice guy, but needs to stop pretending he knows how to teach. Bring a sift to exams b/c they consist of questions laden with ambiguity. The guy barely mentions a topic in class and decides to make it a 20 mark question. Only class in my life I've only achieved a B in. Conclusion: the problem's with WAYNE, not with you.
Insanely interesting man and really nice. I'm an A student and I probably bombed his class but it was so worth it! If you take his class, make sure to attend lectures and learn how to think critically (good for Art students). Textbook reading not necessary.
AVOID HIM
Well... if you don't mind a 37.4% fail rate on the final exam or a 36% average on the midterm, this is definitely the class for you! Wayne is very knowledgeable so I encourage you to use his office hours though I didn't have time to go to any of them this term. Critical thinking is a must... if you think you can pass with just memorizing, gl.
Very depressing professor to learn from. If you're goal is to do well, do not take this course. If you want to learn, I think his lectures can be quite interesting. Do not walk in this class aiming for an A though... because chances are that you'll never get it. Text is useless, learn to THINK like him. Good Luck!
Can you spell PRETENTIOUS? Well, Wayne can, and he'll tell you the origin of the word too. Pretentious, conceited, arrogant, you name it, it's Wayne. Don't waste your time studying, it won't help. Just pray he has mercy on you and gives you a "fair" exam. That being said, he challenged me and encouraged critical thinking.. but I'm glad it's over
I enjoyed the course because it required no memorization whatsoever...i found it relatively easy for the amount of work put in and you could pretty much **** your way through his exams. The study group project is a great idea.
Very helpful prof once you seek for help during his office hours. Because he is a difficult prof, he makes you REALLY study for bio. Just read the text and take notes, then try all the questions and ask him. I failed the midterm, but ended up getting an A-. TAKE HIM & YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT BIO =D
don't take him....trust me...
Just listen to what he says and think. I thought this was one of the easiest classes I have taken. Barely studied and always managed above average. You have to know how to approach the questions. He has tons of review sessions, take advantage of them and learn what kind of answer he is looking for. I enjoyed the class.
definitely not an interesting prof. I slept through or skipped 80% of his classes because they seemed utterly useless! Even though he's completely pretentious, he has clear expectations and is explicit in how he wants you to answer exam questions. So even if u bs.. but its logical and has some factual basis it will work. Oh plus he scales enormousl
Great prof! Very helpfull if you go to his office hours. Very encouraging once you get to know him.
I had Dr.G for 302, 303 and 310. Sure, the midterm avgs were low and I think I even failed one, but I got A's in all three of the classes. He CARES about the students who care and show interest (those who show up to office hours, etc.) Some of the material can be unclear, but he is one of the most approachable teachers at UBC-take advantage of it
His teaching style is quite random and unstructured BUT if you write down all the stuff (and experiments) he discusses, it's basically what you get for exams. Also, read your book, especially experiment examples. Cramming works quite well, but only if you have good notes and READ the book as part of your cramming.
He's alright... I find that his lectures are extremely interesting, and I appreciate that hes trying to teach people how to think critically but his exams are tough to finish and even tougher to answer. I like listening to him talk, though.
Lectures are very interesting and covers a broad range of topics. However, finals and midterms are VERY hard- it's a course where you must pay attention/write notes in order to do well.
He teaches you how to think critically, which is a lot more than what I can say for a lot of the other profs.
He really loves to hear himself talk, but it usually isn't very useful information he is speaking about. The lecture is like a boring conversation, and the midterms are quite difficult.
I think hes a nice guys but did not like the exams whatso ever they were crazy hard and i didn't know what to do because it's hard to prepare for them if you want high marks avoidddd
1)GO TO OFFICE HOURS!! you need to think experimentally and since most of us usually just info, talking to him REGULARLY helps you get "into his mindset" scary 2) Don't rely on da text, just skim and KNOW DEFINITIONS ~ 5 marks on da final (you'l need em) 3) Final is hard so attnd all review sessions 4) GO TO OFFICE HRS STRTING DAY 1!!
Most useless class. Material is presented very poorly, nothing to take notes on, PPt slides completely useless. When studying for exams, you don't know what to study because you don't feel you have learned anything. Avoid this prof! Tests are very difficult...easy group project and nice enough guy Office hours and review sessions must be attended.
Great prof! People complain about how vague he is, but he'd rather have his students actually think about the answers and learn, than memorize the material, hence his teaching. His exams are HARD though...careful thinking is required instead of recitation of the material.
Prof. Goodey is absolutely the harest prof I have ever experienced... All the other biol 121 section wrote the same final.. just ours was different and way harder, so not fair... also, his modterms are a wild guessing game and its is JUST IMPOSSIBLE to get a grade higher than A- trust me you 90+ seekers this prof IS NOT for you..!
Great Teacher
He's actually a great prof. The midterm was killer but it didn't count for much, the study group was worth the same and it was just easy marks. Just discussing with him for 15 minutes! DEFINITLY need to go see him during office hours, he gives loads of help. Did great on final though =)
I love Wayne! He was such a good prof and so helpful when you go to his office hours!!!
very interesting stories...but not really related to the course. all his exam questions require logic/streetsmart...don't require any "biology knowledge." seriously lol. don't take unless your good with solving problems just using logic. final worth 70%. midterm 15% study group 15%. basically get study group full marks. midterm average is 50%.
I think he's a very effective instructor. It's true that you have to be good at solving problem with logic to do well in his class.
He's an interesting prof, has lots of examples about weird animals. But overall, all his stories don't really relate to the course. Taking his class requires lots of logical/problem solving skills. It's difficult to study for this class because you feel like you haven't learned anything once you leave the lecture. The exams are pretty hard too...
Writes exams where he tests material on which he did not lecture and which the material is not necessarily in the textbook. Takes great pride in saying he does not care if students pass or fail. The average grade in his first year Biology course is very low. Great showman but NOT a helpful professor.
His midterm and final are extremely hard.Even now I dont really know how to answer them. Although it is a hard course and a hard prof, his way of teaching make me open up my mind. Do not take this course unless you want a challenge and want to scruggle through the entire semester. Otherwise, take this course with Blade.
extremly dedicated to teaching. Goes the extra mile in side and out of the lexture hall.
If you want to pass DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He has the most pointless exams, both of his sections midterm and finals were on average 15% lower than the other classes. I went to his office hours everyweek and that did me nothing in trying to figure out how to answer his exam questions, which were unrelated to the material we were learning.
Great prof who doesn't follow the typical teaching style other prof uses. Sure exams make you think and questions are kind of open ended, but that's part of the fun! Yes the average for this class is lower in comparison, but the experience is so much more worthwhile.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO. the average for the 3rd year bio midterm was 55%. The lab averages are no better!! Every lecture involves cats in some way. Test questions are ridiculous and so open-ended. My guess is that he probably rates himself as a good prof on this site. This class was so much harder than it needed to be.
Extremely unique teaching style, will keep you awake in his classes. Don't let negative comments prevent you from taking his class, he is a great professor. However, be warned that he marks VERY hard. People complain mainly because of how difficult his marking scheme is.
Goodey really makes you think. Lots of conceptual questions - but you learn a lot about ecology and the scientific method. I don't understand why people dislike him so much.
AVOID. The exams are ridiculous! Questions are poorly worded, so you'd write the exam, feel confident about it, only to find out you failed. Why? Because the marking scheme was looking for a specific answer THAT THE QUESTION NEVER ASKED. My advice is to knowledge vomit on exams. Trust me, I got my first below A grade since 1st year.
Great professor!! Always willing to help and funny sense of humor. Hard exams but if you do the practice exam and talk to him about confusions, you will do great. He actually pushes you to think instead of mindless memorization!
i felt like half his lecture material was just a set up for a lame joke or a bad lolcat picture. lab questions were very unclear -- unless you go and wqork with your TA (who often don't understand what wayne's looking for either) you will not answer the questions right. it was often hard to identify the important concepts from his scattered notes.
Everyone who is complaining about Goodey being too hard, or confusing has no understanding of the importance of logic and complex problem-solving when it comes to these classes. Everyone seems to be used to the rote memorization stages of Biology (ie: first year classes) and when they finally get to a 3rd/4th year level they're lost or offended!
I've had Goodey for 121 and 304. The key to this class is stroking his ego, seriously. If you take the time to ask him irrelevant questions on a philosophical level, and make him feel he's superior to everyone, you'll do great. The midterm average will be a failing average, despite the exam seeming like the easiest test you've ever written.
This class wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. The answer scheme was specific but there should have been no surprises because EVERYTHING was covered. The textbook readings and practice midterms and finals were very helpful, and he really takes the effort during office hours and even goes beyond that time if necessary. Excellent and dedicated
Probably the class I've enjoyed the most at UBC! Lectures were clear and interesting, with lots of real world applications and examples. Wayne Goodey is engaging to listen to, funny, and more than willing to answer questions. Do the work and read the questions and a decent mark is totally doable.
He wastes tons of time trying to impress you with lame jokes and cat pictures or just wastes your time with lots of irrelevant information that isn't on topic. He over complicates everything to make things seem harder than they actually are. Exam and practice questions are extremely wordy and hard to understand even if you know the material.
Makes class interesting with his vault of knowledge about animals. Exams are tricky as most of his Q's are application. Also writes the labs so his instructions will be hard to follow due to wording. Don't fall behind on labs or you'll end up pulling an all nighter.
He is very clear in explaining concepts and makes the class interesting! Plus I enjoyed the cat pictures. ^^
Such a sarcastic person. When I went up to him after we got our first lab back and all received poor marks he was unforgiving and whatever about it. Wasn't super clear when I asked him questions out of class. Spent entire classes going on about general and subjective stuff that didn't help my understanding of ecology at all. Ended up skipping many classes...
I really enjoyed this class (this isn't my area of interest) and I thought Wayne did a good job keeping people interested. Yes, his wording can be confusing but he's still a great prof! Read the book and come to class and you'll do great. The labs are really time consuming!!!! (but not hard)
Professor Goodey is bright, cheerful and engaging. If you can make it to his office hours, he can be very helpful for clarification, but I found him to be quite clear in class. Tests are difficult, but you'll be fine if you justify yourself and refer to concepts taught- Wayne notes in his iClickers that there are often multiple right answers.
Dr. Goodey comes across as quite scary and unapproachable initially. However, if you get to know him he is really passionate about his subject and is willing to talk to you at length. He really wants students to succeed and becomes very, very helpful when he sees that you are working hard and interested in his subject area. Definitely recommend.
He uses a variety of techniques to help you learn (labs, clickers, discussion questions) which is appreciated. He is pretty good, but his clicker questions are often "any answer has merit" which is unrealistic for test situations. He seems very passionate and tries to make the course as interesting as possible.
An incredible prof, who puts fantastic effort and organization probably into every aspect of his life, but certainly into his lecture organization and teaching. Despite it being a difficult class, I had no trouble in getting a good mark as my interest never waned and I was always given an outlet for creative thought and application. Thanks.
Prof. Goodey single-handedly ruined ecology for me. His impossible to understand assignments posted online, along with his frustratingly repeated emails about corrections ruined the lab experience for myself and quite a few students I've recently talked to about it. The labs took ages to do and had such meticulous criteria that doing them was hell.
He's an amazing prof and is enthusiastic. He makes his class enjoyable; however, his exams are marked brutally. The material covered in class is not tested directly in the exam. Despite how well you know your concepts and how much you studied, the tests were unfair.
Wayne thinks he is doing you a service by "making you think outside of the box" when really all he does is screw you over. In class, he makes it seem like any answer you give is valid as long as you can back it up, but on the exam his marking is ridiculously unfair because he wants extremely specific answers even though the questions are so vague.
his expectations are ridiculous on exams - class avg 49% and he seems to be okay with it. the marking scheme is also crazy. AVOID. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID.
Half our class failed the first midterm. We are the only section for the course this semester that had a different exam, and the only section to do this badly. Lectures are interesting enough, but material is reviewed rather than taught, which doesn't feel productive for a first year course. I would not recommend Wayne Goodey.
WORSE PROF EVER!!! midterm 1 had an average of 49% whereas all the other sections were at least in the high sixties. This guys basically slaps us in the face when he decided to put material from the first midterm in our second one because we did so bad. what a guy.
worst prof of all time.. avoid
In lecture, he asks open ended questions with a wide range of acceptable answers but on the exam, he asks questions that require specific responses. I believe there should be an even level playing field between all bio sections but that is not the case. A 49 average class and a 70 percentage is not an even playing field.
his marking is insane and irrational. his lectures very vaguely go over what is tested , if that. he gives completely irrelevant clicker questions and actually said giving the answers to a practice midterm would not help us study. AVOID at all costs. his class avg was atleast 20% below other sections. really hated his class.
Goodey, maybe its u that sucks.
He is very clear, helpful and intelligent. I like the cat jokes, and his presentation style. University isn't supposed to be easy. If you study well, ask questions, you will succeed. I got within the top 5% of the class for ecology. I paid no attention to class average as I wasn't looking for a scale.
If you are interested in any of the material covered in this course, you will probably find his lectures very interesting. His exams are extremely unfair,as open ended class discussion questions are often met with "There's more than one answer"yet he only accepts his one answer for tests.Do not take this with him, other sections had way betteraverages
DO NOT TAKE HIM PERIOD.
Okay, this guy is DEFINITELY hard. But, not impossible. Get to know him, he is very friendly if you go to his office hours. I ended up helping him test his aquarium water every once and awhile. Attending class not mandatory, as he does NOT go over textbook stuff. Mainly conceptual stuff which was helpful. Don't expect an easy class with him.
He isn't the best prof. When he DOES properly teach, he is decent but he goes over material a bit too quickly at times and his exams are HARD. Our class got 46% on our MT. He did scale a bit in the end but he is very strict. One other thing is that he likes to ramble and waste class time. no need to go to lectures. try and avoid him if you can.
His exams are Not easy and can be a bit of a shocker to be honest. You have to really work at this course since most of his questions are based on the concepts rather than memorization. He makes the topics very interesting and his classes are mostly discussion based so pre-readings are almost essential to do well in this class.
His exams are tough. You have to really work at this course since most of his questions are based on the concepts rather than memorization. He makes the topics very interesting especially because the class is discussion based so pre-readings are almost essential to do well in this class. This is NOT an easy first year class.
The material is great, but the lecture itself with Wayne Goodey was horrible. Avoid this class at all costs if you value your grade and interest in Biology. I loved the material in this class, but Wayne absolutely destroyed any plans I had in pursuing genetics or ecology further. I hate the fact that part of my tuition goes to him.
Wayne did the lab portion of ecology. The lab assignments were so hard to understand and the marking incredibly hard. For the amount of work and time I put into the labs my mark did not reflect. We then got an email telling the class not to overuse the office hours. (which you needed to attend because the labs are so confusing)
Wayne Goodey is the most worthless prof on the planet. do yourself a favour and avoid this guy like the plague. he needs to get a life, lives in his own little world and openly despises his students
He is the best prof if you really want to learn Biology. He is patient, responsible, but not higher grade. He really teaches you how to think biology, that's what other profs could not do!!! Take his class, it worths it!
Don't take this class, you won't get higher than 60%. Time put into studying will never be worth the grade you get back. Biggest mistake yet of my Uni life. Doesn't teach anything just talks about his cats all day.
Worst prof i've ever had. Would not give us answers to practice midterms. Half the class failed the first midterm. Second midterm even worse.
Great Teacher with lots of experience. Take this class if you want to learn. You will grow as a student. Even though tests are hard, it is possible to do well.
his gives a lot of discussion questions in class but never tells you the correct direction afterwards
If you have the chance, switch out of his class! His tests are very hard and you'll end up hating this course. His tests are less terminologymemorizing and more on conceptscreativityBS-like answers. His class is very self-directed. Again, if you can, switch out of his class. If not, good luck! You'll definitely need it.
Midterms are tough, might be most important part of grade, which are building the foundation of your final grade.
He marks much more on process of thought than by anyparticular curriculum. It was hard to figure out what he was looking for on any of the tests, especially since he didn't really lecture on anything tested. DO THE READINGS. Otherwise you will have no chance.
Is he tough? Yeah. Complaining that his tests are not memorization based but concept based? Thats laughable. Did you expect to do well in university by just memorizing stuff? He is a nice guy if you get to know him and very helpful. His assignments can be confusing and you need to follow the criteria. It is possible to do well though. A- in both.
I really enjoyed his class! Tough marker but I learned a lot.
Dr. Goodey is an incredible professor. That being said, you should only take 230 with him if you are interested in ecology. The work he gives us is hard and the exams are complex, but you learn a lot and become a better ecologist in the end. Also take this over the summer: only one lab and a small class of 30-50. Makes it more enjoyable
Spent all of the first month talking about random things such as the history of UBC, and his hate for modern culture. Told us that he would not be teaching us anything for the first unit, because we should already know it (while other sections are learning it). Office hours were pointless, only does confusing ppt questions with vague explanations.
If you have the chance to drop out of his class, do it. He is extremely unhelpful, lectures are boring and useless, and I self teach myself using the textbook. His lectures are all discussion questions and don't expect to learn from him, at all.
He does not teach anything.
He does not teach anything, just talks about what he likes in his life.
HIS PART OF COURSE IS PRETTY EASY! BUT NOT THE PROF FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE COURSE!!!
You haven't had a bad prof until you took bio 121 with this guy... Unless you've had background in bio, chances are you will not understand/learn anything from him. His slides are pointless and just a wall of text that doesn't get any point across. If you have the chance to drop, DROP IT IMMEDIATELY.
Very different kind of prof, suits people who are naturally smart and dont rely on memorization to pass classes
don't even attend class, his lecture slides are all irrelavant
His lectures and Powerpoint slides are a complete waste of time. They do not teach you anything, literally just a bunch of irrelevant words. If you have no background in Bio it will be hard to do good in his class. Had to sit-in in another bio class and self-teach myself the whole book just to do decent in Bio. Dont take his class guys
I found his lectures to be often disorganized, leaving us with no "learning objectives". I would often attend other profs' lectures to fully comprehend the course material. Would not recommend
Wayne Goodey is delusional if he thinks his structure for biology 230 labs is reasonable. Sends students too many emails that are too long and make no sense too. His labs for the course and tedious, useless and extremely time consuming. Relate in no way to the lecture material either. Impossible to do well in this class
He sends too many lengthy e-mails that are not helpful at all. Literally 2000 word e-mails. I always end up losing marks on the lab reports because he gives NO CRITERIA or rubric so it's very difficult to get a good mark on them. He just takes off marks whenever he feels like it.
Just bad. Lab portion seems to be intended to bring your mark down in this course.
Sends too many emails. Doesn't teach well. Asks for class participation then is condescending when he receives it. Had to complete the second lab before getting the first one back, therefore unable to correct any previous mistakes made one the first for the second lab. Labs are super tedious and time consuming. Midterms unfair. Don't take BIOL306!!
Expects perfection from students in the lab, certainly does not reciprocate in the quality of assignment information.
He admits to deliberately obfuscating coursework. He is condescending, yet expects class participation. He is extremely vague in his exams. The type of student that succeeds in his class are the type that would succeed only by reading a textbook. Unless youve got a massive craving for last decades memes, avoid at all costs.
I think Wayne missed the part in middle school where they teach you how to make effective powerpoint slides. His lectures are filled with excessive and useless text that make it difficult to take notes from and even more difficult to study from. He is condescending and has unrealistic expectations regarding exams.
It seems like it's complete luck on what grade you get. You literally have to put EXACTLY what he wants to get the marks, yet he sends 1000 word paragraph essays in his emails which explain very little. Literally, your only hope is that you get a good TA and then go to office hours, that gives you a shot.
Wayne is amazing if you take the time to be patient with him and the course work. He teaches application of knowledge not memorization. The discussions in lecture provide all the answers. Dont write out whats written on the slides.
He's the worst prof I've had so far. His lectures are boring and dry. The only time textbooks come in handy are the pre-readings quizes and they aren't in sync with lectures. Questions on tests are barely related to lectures and the textbook, so preparing for them is difficult. No answers are given for practice exams which defeat the purpose of it.
He expects so much from his students but doesn't give clear instruction on literally anything. He would tell us to read the textbook and understand it, yet would say how much he hated how things were worded and how the tables were constructed. Expect a low mark on the labs and exams.
One word: Inspirational Deeply cares about students as he sends email updates often to worry about your education Wonderful lectures slides as they're very clear and concise. Can't ask for a better prof Very looking forward to taking bio 306 with him
Wayne is an okay prof. He makes himself very accessible outside of class. Lecture can be a bit dry at times, but overall it was interesting. Lots of discussion. Exams are fair (1 midterm + final), but MC are worth 2 each which is annoying. Labs aren't hard either and you can usually leave early. Overall not my favorite prof but he wasn't the worst
when going over clicker answers he would show there are multiple ways to look at certain questions, but when it came to the tests he wanted you to be super specific on things that can be looked at in many different ways. Gave 0/5 on questions on the midterm even when you write a whole paragraph.
Wayne Goodey sends incredibly long, condescending emails. His instructions for 230, while not inherently difficult, are so bloated that you have to wade through the information. He refuses to release any sort of rubric or criteria for such things as chart presentation. Biol 230 lab reports are an exercise in frustration, I dread Biol 306.
Used him as my reference for medical school and I got in! (First try!!!) Really passionate about Biology. Couldn't ask for a better prof.
Honestly, he's a pretty good prof. If you go to his office hours, he really ensures you know the stuff before you leave his office. In lecture, I know sometimes it may be confusing, but the dude just wants you to think on your own sometimes. He's preparing you for harder courses. Buy the optional textbook as exam questions come from it :)
Many people complained about his lack of availability and clear explanations. But if you don't go to office hours or ask him any questions and figure things out on your own, you'll do fine.
