Interesting class. Knows his stuff. Can wander.
very knowledgable in the field of education; enjoyed his methods class
very simple to understand, many bad jokes, have coffee before class
I'm not a History major but I got an A- in a 400 level history class taught by Dr. Hanley. It wasn't necessarily easy, but he has a real passion for his subjects. It was fun!
Awesome teacher, real enthusiatic, nice guy, really knows his material, great class
He tries. History can be really boring and this guy does his best to make it interesting which I can't say about some other profs I've had. His 101 classes are pure lecture but he keeps them light and fun.
He is VERY arrogant. If you have a class with him, be prepared to hear that he has two masters and a PhD constantly. He thinks very highly of himself. No one in my class liked him.
Funny and interesting. Just pay attention any you will get a good grade.
This course should be a writing emphasis course as you do alot of writing. Tests are straightforward! I'll take this former grunt again!!
Excellent professor that was always very helpful. He has a great sense of humor. I would definately take another class with him.
Amazing teacher a lot of fun to have and extremely informative. Lot of writing work and tests are 50% multiple choice 50% essay
Never thought Modern France would be a good class- I was just fulfilling a culture cluster. Great lecturer and story teller. He expects nothing less than the best you can give, but that makes you better than you were before.
ssci331, history of france.. Dr Hanley has a funny sense of humor and makes the class enjoyable. He was a english teacher so he is a stickler on grading papers
Entertaining and skilled lecturer. Genuine interest in students success. Definitely take his courses.
I loved learning until I took this class by Dr. Hanley. His sarcasm, although briefly entertaining exemplified his pompous attitude. He was un-necessarily harsh & unfair in his grading too-this is coming from a student who recieved good grades.FYI he doesn't believe in 100% don't get your hopes up
He is a great teacher, keeps history interesting which is hard to do. He grades kind of hard on the essay parts of tests but overall the class isn't to hard.
He is the absolute worse professor I have ever had! He made me seriously think about switching out of my major, thank god Peters helped me enjoy history again For you sanity NEVER take Hanley, he thinks he is funny but he is so far from that. He is a pompus middleaged man who laughs at his own jokes
He is awesome and do not let anyone tell you different. He is always willing to help and very passionate about teaching. If you failed his class you probably deserved it b/c he is very fair and thorough. As long as you do the work and study hard you will pass his class.
I took him for 3 classes Modern France, French Rev., and Social Studies Methods. He is an great history teacher, very passionate and interesting. Terrible education teacher, confusing and uninformative. Classes are lecture, if you that is condusive to your learning style you'll do fine. All of his tests are fair papers and projects VERY SUBJECTIVE!
Is an interesting fellow. Lectures are entertaining and tests are very fair. Attandance is required. If you don't like liberal professors who constantly express their views during class, don't take him. Overall, the class was worth the $!
Good teacher. Does laugh at his own jokes- but he knows the are bad. states his opinion. always helpful. very useful with papers, will help you in any way. esp for his 400- he will help you with research and topic ideas. fair but tough grader- lets you do rewrites, gives good feedback
funny guy (i think he is). lots of energy and passion for his work. he does tend to give TOO MUCH information/detail, so just be careful what you study...the tests and homework assignments are HARD!
The worst professor by far!
Hanley is one of the most amazing teachers i've ever had, his passion helps motivate his students. I would recommend him to those who do and don't love history! The only way anyone cannot love him and his wonderful sense of humor is if you are an ignorant republican!
worst professors I ever had. It was a teaching methods class yet he never gave any instruction on how to teach.(Unless you count his poor teaching as a negative example). Never gave clear instructions. And he told me a lesson that I had used to teach to a real class, and went wonderfully with, interested, engaged students, would never work
Have to agree with last post. "Do as I say, not as I do" would have been his theme song. Everything he taught I already had in lower level education courses. Very little if any of the endless mountains of time consuming busy work actually prepares you to teach social studies. An absolute waste of time, and the worst choice to teach this class.
I think he really keeps the class interesting with his constant jokes and references to modern situations. He provides a LOT of detailed information, but it is just to give students a clear picture of the time period. The work's cake, and he gives you every opportunity to get an A. I'd highly recommend him.
Hanley is great teacher and knows everything there is to know about ancient civilizations. He seems a little weird in the beginning but he has a great sense of humor and generally keeps you interested. Be prepared for A LOT of notes and the dreadful documents exercises. Tests aren't too bad either, i recommend him.
One of the best professors I've had. Keeps the class interesting, his corny jokes make the time fly. A lot of note-taking but tests are easy and the final is basically the old tests and quizzes again. TAKE HIM!
Hanley is pretty awesome. I had him the first semester of 06' for my gen. ed. history class. At first, he seems goofy and has weird jokes sometimes but once you get to know him, he is great. I love history and let me tell you what, that man knows everything there is to know about ancient history. Do your do****ent exercises and take GOOD NOTES!
OMG. This is seriously the biggest waste of my time. EVER. don't take him for this class if you can avoid it.
Took his seminar on the Romantic era. His lectures were quite interesting; his specialty is in French history and Napoleon. Very fair grader. His jokes are silly, but overall the class was great.
Dr. Hanley is a terrific professor. He's extremely knowledgeable, has vast experience in French AND British History, and interesting lecturer - and his jokes are pretty cool if you are of a "certain age" - loves satire and irony, uses a lot in his class! Funny, enjoyable professor! May turn me into a History Major yet!!
I rook Dr. Hanley's class, "England to 1688" during the summer. Not only did I love the class, but Hanley's ability to synthesize his love of history and his love of teaching was nothing short of enlightening (not to mention his cool ties). One of the best teachers I have ever had. Ever.
Dr. Hanley is the type of Professor people come to college to have. He his funny, enlightened, friendly, encouraging and engaging. He is a true mentor and just plain fun to be around. He makes you want to do the work by making you not want to let him down. Superb teacher, excellent human being.
its true. his jokes are awful. but hes the man! lol. great professor and great guy all around. fair grader. attendance is mandatory (hes the dept. chair, it makes sense) has a vibrant passion for what he teaches and he does a good job of telling the story. hw due every 2 weeks and a paper at the end + the exams. def recommend to anyone!
Took Modern France and French Rev & Nap. Fascinating man, great yet corny jokes. Willing to debate interpretations. Big on primary sources. One of my favorite profs ever. Essay tests were hard, but only due to time restraint. Very fair, and lets you know what'll be on the test. But assignments are all based on texts, so be sure to get the books
Easy, easy, easy. If you want an A, take him and laugh at his jokes.
Dr Hanley is a nice amusing guy, who is knowledgeable about his subject, and the topic is interesting, but I don't like his teaching style. He digresses a lot, and when he uses Powerpoint, what he is talking about usually doesn't match what is displayed. ID/Essay tests but no study guide. Also no due dates for assignments or exams on syllabus.
Dr. Hanley is a nice guy. Funny sense of humor. He gives 3 tests of IDs and essays, easy document question homework assignments, and a book review paper. His PowerPoints are confusing and he jumps from one point to the next. He is sometimes hard to follow during lectures. Overall a good professor though.
I'm not a History Major (I'm a Comm Major) so I was a little scared to take a 400 level history class but I needed a culture cluster and history interests me so I decided to take this class anyway. I LOVED Dr. Hanley's class, it was one of my favorites of the semester! He made history understandable AND interesting!
Don't take this class if you're a visual learner (like me). He doesn't have good slides at all and expects you to take notes off of what he's saying. Personally, that is tough for me and it made it so hard to get above a C on the tests, which are all BLUEBOOKS ! Never again...
Dr. H is a great guy. Funny and knowledgeable. Clear love of his field which makes lectures fun and interesting. Unfortunately, he requires like 7 or 8 books. Tests are difficult. All of them are Blue Book and based on the lectures and the tons of reading. If you are a good test taker, you should ace this. If not, think it over!
Professor Hanley is absolutely hilarious. He's very passionate in what he teaches, but also in older pop culture reference. Take notes based off of what he says, rather than what's on the slide. Other than that do the Document exercises because they're a little long, but they aren't too hard.
Dr hanley is a great Professor and I enjoyed his class very much. He is filled with dad jokes that grow on you but he knows his stuff. For the class he says you need 2 books and you really need 1 to be honest so keep that in mind. His final was easy if you have a brain stem youll do well. Good class if you gotta get a requirement out of the way
Extremely funny and intelligent. Highly recommended.
There are 3-4 questions per exam from the book, just read the material he hasn't covered in class. He is very harsh on the essays, but does warn you about that. I believe he did curve both "mid-terms," the first one had +5 added and the second one had +9 added. Easy A if you put in the effort, just be ready to take notes.
Do not waste your time with this teacher if you are just taking this for credits. I am a very visual learner and he expects you to keep up with what he is saying without slides and doesn't even give you time to raise your hand to ask him to repeat himself. 2 Mid-terms, 1 final, 6 document exercises. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Expected to know EVERYTHING.
nice guy, definitely not mean, which is great. very approachable. but these are the only upsides. his class is just him talking at us for over an hour. very little visuals which makes his lecture even more unbearable and boring. if you have to take him, it's not the worst thing in the world but get ready to read a ton and be bored out of your mind.
He's very easy going and lectures very well. Has a lot of funny jokes.
Funny guy, bad teacher. If you're a history major who knows everything already take the class, if not, good luck. There aren't that many grades for the semester so if you fail one test you are screwed. He doesn't use his slides for anything more than a map to stare at on the screen claiming that we need to learn from him lecturing the entire class
Dr. Hanley is willing to help outside class but there's not much he can do if you don't know what you don't know. Tests seem to focus on reading rather than the point of what he talks about in class and homework. I'm not a great test-taker, but these tests were extra hard for me because the wording on the tests didn't sound familiar or ring a bell.
SO hard and so much work, tests require a 5 paragraph essay on an unknown topic and 30 multiple choice. AVOID!
You definitely have to take notes on lectures and not just what he puts in the PowerPoint because he doesnt put slides online. We had an assignment every other week but they were super easy readings and questions. This class was easy to pass and you dont necessarily need to attend every one but it is helpful to Show up take notes.
The only thing that saved me in this class was the fact that he gives these document questions as homework and theyre basically free points and he just checks for completion. I would not recommend him if this is just for a gen ed
I have taken Hanley's classes for three semesters in a row and I keep coming back. Lectures are heavy and it would be rough to even miss a couple, but he will help you succeed if you ask. Cares a lot for his students and is always clarifying his lectures with modern-day examples and references. He's also funny which helps his dense lectures.
At the beginning of the semester, he said everything would be done in class since he has a hard time using a computer. Dr. Hanley literally taught himself how to use the internet to give everyone the best class that we could get. His lectures were close to as good as his lectures in class and truly makes his classes challenging and interesting!
Love dr hanley, hes loaded with dad jokes and such humor. Really funny guy, gives classical type dictated notes (which works for me some others not so much). Hes a very tough essay grader, but he gives plenty of points elsewhere that you can do not so great on essays and still have a very good grade. Document book is necessary, textbook your call
Hanley is the most knowledgeable professor I have ever had, and if he does not know the answer to your question he will find out. If you show up to class, ask questions and do the readings, you will get a good grade. Engagement is huge. A LOT of reading but it is all applicable to the class and will make you a better student.
I've had Dr. Hanley a few times now, this was for the fall 20 covid zoom semester. He seemed to adjust well to being online. Very funny guy. This class is his main area of study so he's very into it. He's a pretty tough grader with writing but there are enough points elsewhere to make up for it and still do quite well. Would recommend the class
Dr. H is a great professor. Passionate about the subject matter. SO many books for one class (9). Treats people like people. I suffered a severe panic attack during a final just before winter break. He allowed me to come in a week later and retake with no deductions. Tough but fair, funny and engaging, what a prof should be.
Dr. Hanley's class did nothing but stress me out. He is a nice person but expects students to dedicate all time outside of class reading and writing for his class. If you ask questions he will get frustrated, treats undergraduate classes like graduate level classes.
Professor Hanley is just an amazing professor and human being. I had a family emergency that occurred during the semester and he was extremely helpful going thru my problems and was very respectful as well as a very caring person! Id take him again in a heartbeat!!
being upfront, he's just annoying and extra. you can attend every class and still have no idea whats happening because 1) he doesn't talk about the textbook assigned pages, he just goes on tangents, yet has 5+ required texts, 2) you listen to him talk the whole time with some mediocre slides & no discussion, 3) you teach yourself w/ the syllabus
I love this class, and Professor Hanley. His tests are hard but the document exercises and online quizzes are simple enough. As far as his lectures go, you need to write down what he says and what's on the powerpoint. He isn't an easy A though, you definitely have to work. But if you study and pay attention, the experience is amazing.
Funny guy but absolutely horrible class. It is a small class and he does not connect or care about any of the students individually. He does not use D2L to post due dates or submit any work on. His tests are all fill in the blank and he refuses to give study guides or any guidelines for the exams. Extremely hard to follow whats going on.
If you actually enjoy history I highly suggest taking him, he will make you work for the grade and gives lots of lectures so skipping is kinda difficult to do if you want to pass. His history lessons are almost like you're being told a cool story and you kinda forget you're in a class and are supposed to be taking notes.
The only negative about him is his clear bias against trump and the right. He will take small jabs at it which I didn't think was necessary for the class. But, he is a great lecturer and made history interesting. You will have to do work outside the classroom to pass though. Exams aren't too bad but the essays on them are a big chunk of the grade
Prof Hanley's lectures are always entertaining but he definitely makes you work for your grade. Be prepared to pay attention and take notes. Also do the reading in the textbook, it helps a LOT with his tests which are difficult. We also had document exercises every week or so that included about 5-6 pages of writing.
Professor Hanley is a really great professor, his teaching style is lecture heavy but makes it fun and easy to pay attention. He is a very funny guy too. I'm currently in his French Revolution class and always look forward to going. He has document assignment homework that's easy but a little time consuming. hardest part is his 3 bluebook tests
Overall, Professor Hanley is a great professor with a great sense of humor that makes his lectures enjoyable. Every class will involve taking notes so missing a day involves losing a whole day of notes. 100% recommend him.
I took this class as a French culture cluster as a COM major. His lectures can be boring and it's hard to keep up with what he talks about b/c his PP slides are minimal and pointless. You're graded on a few assignments and the exams are HARD. I went to his office hours and he was kind. If ur a history major u might do well but this class is no joke
Prof Hanley is very funny and kind! He makes his class very easy to pass as all exams and homework are done online. He lectures every class so if you miss class you miss a full day of notes, but his lectures are interesting and he makes it entertaining.
He doesn't post slides so make sure you attend class and take detailed notes.
Dr. Hanley is a traditional professor, but he still is a great professor . I would recommend to everyone to take all his classes .
Great guy, super enthusiastic. Sometimes brings up his political views a little much and it can get a little annoying. Notes are pretty much taken off of just the words he says. Overall though, just pay attention.
Lectures drag. Has a superiority complex over his students--constantly makes jabs at college students intelligence. I misheard the due date for an online exam once and went to his office hours to explain; he not only proceeded to ignore me while chatting with another faculty member for 5 minutes, but was extremely rude and belittling to me.
I have taken 2 of his classes. He's definitely not a great teacher for everyone. He makes witty dad jokes in class all the time, I think they are funny. All his tests are online but he doesn't add trick questions. He's inflexible with deadlines, but his assignments are super easy.
Absolutely love Dr. Hanley. He's easy to talk to and happy to help during office hours. He will push you to be a better student and writer, and he will give you so much feedback on papers and tests if you ask. He helped me a lot with applying to graduate school and is full of amusing life advice. Definitely take him!
His French Rev/Napoleon class was awesome! Dr Hanley is extremely knowledgeable and his lectures are so entertaining. His teaching style is very traditional so be prepared to take a lot of notes based on what he says, not the slides. Exams are hard but not impossible especially if you pay attention. I'd only recommend for history majors.
This dude is awesome, makes a normally boring class actually fun. Just listen and take a few notes and you will be good. Very funny guy, take his classes if you can.
Worst professor in my whole college career. Grade decided by missing one assignment while getting A's on all other ones. DO NOT TAKE
Dr. Hanley is a very knowledgeable prof. of his focus areas. His grading is fair but will have a lot of reading and paying more than average attention in class as he speaks the lectures themselves with just reference photos on the board and they are not posted anywhere. He is funny and always tries to answer students' questions to help.
This prof is so funny, and a trump hater! He gave me a selfie after my mom thought I was skipping! This man is an easy grader, and his lectures are so funny!
