Class kinda tough but you get a lot out of it.
Larson is an awesome teacher. He's very enthusiastic about chemistry!
Explains things very well and lets you keep up with him. Highly recomended.
he substituted for our regular instructor for a few weeks and he was awesome. he explained things well and did various demos. the main selling point for him was that he made the class fun and interesting and i wished he could have stayed
He's great. There's nothing more you can say.
hard, funny guy. very knowledgable. seriously fun. I strongly recommend him.
mr larson is totally funny, has a weird sense of humor, hes able to keep your attention. his class is not easy, youll have to work, but if you need help, he'll do what ever he can. and hes totally geeky cute.
hot kick ass teacher. this class is no walk in the park, but he makes it interesting. has cool demos, and blows stuff up the first day of class, thats always a plus. if you need help just ask, hes way cool. loved him
at least he's funny
Larson is an awesome teacher. His lectures are intersting and he has a quirky sense of humor. He loves to blow things up, and truely loves chemistry. The class is no walk in the park, but he gives you an extra 2% per grade (88% A, 76% B, 64% C, etc.). I would definantly recommend him as a teacher.
he is really good teacher.
very very funny and probably the best lecturer i have ever had, alot of fun to learn from both off the blackboard and out of the ChemKit.
i thought this was a great class. he is very amusing with the stories he tells, also very good at teaching the material so go to the lectures, dont just rely on reading the text. if you do the practice exams and the hw then it is possible to do well in his class.
i thought this was a great class. he is very amusing with the stories he tells, also very good at teaching the material so go to the lectures, dont just rely on reading the text. if you do the practice exams and the hw then it is possible to do well in his class.
Nice guy, very approachable and easy going. Sliding grading system(88= A 76=B 64=C etc)READ THE BOOK & ASK QUESTIONS. It can be a tough class if you don't study enough, but it can also be a lot of fun, it just depends on the effort you put in. THE PROF IS GREAT.
Dr.Larson is by far the best Chemistry teacher for Intro. If only he taught the other Chemistry classes, we'd all probably breeze right through. Even intro can be a bit challenging for some people so don't underestimate it. Ask questions, do the practice sheets, and attend every day to understand everything. Moles are your friend!
Larson made chemistry my favorite class last semester even though it was my hardest class. His antics make the lecture enjoyable, and he explains everything clearly. It is VERY important to study for each test. Do the practice exams and all the homework. That and paying attention in class is helps infinitely more than the textbook ever will.
very, very organized. focuses on concepts, and spells it out for you. always willing to help. I highly recommend him, I wish he taught chem 120.
He is a BEAST!!! Best professor ever. The hardest class, but he keeps it so interesting. Love him!
The best ever!!!!
Absolute best intro chemistry teacher @ DVC. Cannot recommend enough, class can still be difficult for some so make sure you study and attend lecture. Very fair, wants you to succeed. He also has a great sense of humor and actually makes you want to attend class, if you need to take chem 108 take it with larson. Too bad he doesn't teach 120 etc
Professor L has the best sense of humor ever, he is super funny, EXTREMLY HELPFUL, his lectures are crystal clear, he writes all the important points on the board, so TAKE GOOD NOTES! he puts "need to know" stuffs on WebCT before tests, and if you know how to do them then you will def A'ce the test. and DO THE HOMEWORK, you can use them on quizzes
Very helpful and really wants the class to succeed. Even slowed the pace b/c the class was not understanding a topic. There are 3 exams, 1 final & a few quizzes in between. There is HW but its not collected, however he lets you use it during quizzes ONLY! go to his office hrs for more help! he can explain things differently and help with problems!
very nice and funny guy! super helpful and I loved the way he explained chem. Everything was slowly starting to make sense. Wish I had taken him for chem108!
His lectures are easy to follow, he's funny and extremely approachable and down-to-Earth and knows what he's talking about. Wish I could have him for all my chemistry classes at DVC...
I honestly LOVE this teacher. He's awesome. THe reviews here didn't lie. He's someone I'd love to hang out with out of class n sit n bug him about what the real working-scientist world is all about. I do love chem n science n general. It helps having a professor that seems to love what he teaches as well. Great guy :)
I love this man. He's funny, witty and engaging.
Best. Lecturer. Ever! Very funny, HELPFUL, and engaging! TAKE HIS CLASS.
He is super relaxed and nice in lab, which was great. In lecture, he tries to oversimplify things so we don't get overwhelmed, but that means he sometimes leaves out necessary information, so I often don't realize something is important, or even exists until it shows up on an exam. He is really nice, and wants you to succeed though.
Wonderful professor! You'd be hard pressed to find a better one. I highly recommend taking his class. He is funny, engaging, and thoroughly knowledgeable of the subject.
I also had him for 226. He is my favorite professor and made me want to pursue a Ph.D in chemistry. Dr. Larson is an amazing teacher, funny and an all around nice guy that students want to hang out with outside of class. I highly recommend you take him if you are fortunate enough to be able to.
As a student with ADHD and Major Depression (was depressed during the class), I found that Larson was beyond amazing. He was willing to do special office hours to explain the material to me in more detail and it really helped me understand it and get the A+ grade I needed in this class to go on as a chemistry major. The best professor I've ever had
Best teacher I've ever taken and the reason I plan to major in chemistry.
He da bomb
Dr. Larson is the bomb! He is so relaxed during lab and lectures. His grading is pretty lenient too compared to other professors. Wish I could take hi for every class. I think he is the only professor that gave exams that people could finish and actually pass at the same time. Fight for a spot in his class and you won't regret it!
I don't know why people think that Larson is the best professor. He is really good, He gives amazing lectures, but when it comes to grading he is really strict. This semester we had 18 students and 2 people got A. If you think that you are in that two. Definetly recommended otherwise at different community college.
Best chem teacher, hands down. Clear, straightforward, AND easy. His tests are just like his lectures. But just bc he's easy doesn't mean you won't learn anything. He is easy because you learn EVERYTHING!!!!!! He needs a gold medal or something. He's an easygoing, hilarious guy that will be there for u if u ever need help. He makes chem so clear
The hype around Larson IMHO is a bit too much. He is funny, very chill in lab and an easy grader. He is experienced in teaching that he forgot students do not have the same knowledge as him. Thus, his lecture was way too oversimplified to the point you have no idea what's going on. Take his class if you just want to pass the class with good grade
Larson is awesome! Really straight forward and is there to help, always! He makes gen chem interesting and interactive and honestly a lot of fun. Chemistry has always been a tricky subject for me but Larson always made sure I was on track and would always check to see if I needed additional help. He is wonderful. TAKE HIS CLASS!
I wish all teachers were like Larson. He tells you exactly what you need to know, and guides you every step of the way during lab and lecture. He has a good sense of humor during class which makes lectures entertaining at times. He doesn't like memorization or complicated procedures so he makes it simple and gives you some material to use on exams.
I'm an older student (26) and I have attended much school in my life including Navy Nuclear Power School. Dr. Larson is by far my favorite professor/instructor. The methods he teaches for solving stoichiometry problems are fire af. He knows what you need to do to succeed, and he breaks things down well. He is calm. Pretty much reached chemistry zen
At first, I was dreading having to take Chemistry, as I took it in high school and had a hard time. Mr. Larson made it super easy to understand and made class fun (because he likes to blow stuff up). Chemistry went from my least favorite subject, to one of my favorites. So to anyone looking for a great Chemistry teacher, take this one.
Mr. Larson was easily my favorite professor this semester, and I was genuinely dreading taking chemistry. He made the subject enjoyable and he's more interested in you understanding the material so you can get the grade you want. He wants you to pass too!
He's funny, understanding, focused. Writes everything important on board so long as u copy good notes you'll have everything u need for the tests. 4 quizzes followed by 4 exams for each quiz + final. Little extra credit opportunity. Mildly easy A. He's THE BEST CHEM TEACHER BY FAR!!! Take him, you will never regret ur decision.
I went up to Larson the first day of my chem 108 class and told him this was my 3rd and final attempt at taking this class and I really needed to pass. He assured me that he would get me through the class! If you work hard, try and show up he notices. Take notes and stay involved. He is a fair grader & got me through CHEM!!
He is one of the best professors in DVC. He designs the lecture that is so easy to understand. He's also very kind to answer all your questions through email, in class, or in office hour. There are 4 tests, some quizzes before each test, and 1 final exam. Following his instructions, and you can do it well!
Professor Larson is an excellent chemistry professor. He makes the material very simple and straightforward. If you do the homework and study your notes, you will do fine! Just don't get behind in the class!
Professor Larson is a great teacher, but the test is not easy and when you take the quiz, the homework that he let you use that is not useful.
Professor Larson is a genius w knowing the materials and also teaching it. You will see as you take higher levels that while all professors at dvc know their stuff, they are not the greatest at teaching. I feel so lucky to have had him. Havent had a professor yet that is as good.
I loved taking Chemistry with Larson. He really cares about his students learning and understanding the material. He is more than fair when it comes to content youre expected to know and grading. He is hecka slow at returning exams and grading and he does not update grades in canvas. Show up, pay attention, and put in a little work and get an A.
I didn't do well in the class, but that was all my fault. Larson is a phenomenal teacher both in lecture and lab. Unless you can retain everything in the lectures you'll need to do outside studying, a lot of it. The labs are fun and educational. He is really a great instructor and I can't recommend him enough.
Larson makes it the easiest he can for everyone. The course is hard. The information is hard but he really teaches it in the simplest way. This is just one of those classes where you need to constantly practice it or you won't do well. One of my hardest classes, ever. But, he's definitely the prof you want for the job, just work for it.
Amazing professor. TAKE LARSON. His lectures are amazing, and he wants nothing more than to see his students succeed. It really shows how much he cares. Yes, you will need to work hard, but he gives you everything you need to succeed and he has the best ways of teaching you the material so that you understand i. One of the best professors I've had.
Such a great teacher. super funny and is really caring of his students. attend lectures and take notes and you'll pass. One of my favorite teachers ever!!
Professor Larson is by far my favorite professor in DVC, if you have the chance to take him you will not regret it. The class is chemistry so you cant expect it to be easy but professor Larson does his best to help you succeed in chemistry.
Best chem teacher out. Hes super caring about his students and wants everyone to learn and pass. Makes labs easy because he shows you step by step on what to do, and in lecture he breaks it down for you to make easier to learn. Overall good teacher
The class was alright. RMP made it seem easier than it was. It has a huge curve so an 88 is an A a 76 is a B and a 66+ is a C. Couple tests , midterm, textbook hw, labs every Wednesday. He knows his stuff but his class was hard. Hes kind of a tough grader but he went to cal tech so it make sense.
Took him for into to chem and intro to organic chemistry he is really good and caring professor. I wish more professors were like him. His lectures are amazing and very clear.
I have so SO much respect for Dr Larsen, I would have not made it through this class with any other teacher on the plant. He is there for you, incredibly patient, and soft spoken. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND him!! The best professor in the world!
If you have the chance to take Prof. Larson then do it!! He's a great teacher, makes lecture funny, and provides snacks! Also he makes the class very easy to understand, he explains things well and then provides lots of practice. Have to show up though, because he doesn't post any class notes online but he's great so time goes by fast in his class!
One of the best Professors at DVC! He makes chemistry understandable and is very patient. He makes class enjoyable with his dad jokes and stories lol. He also goes out of his way just to bring snacks every class period! Great teacher.
Professor Larson is probably the funniest professor that ive had at dvc. He is extremely caring and goes through material SLOWLY and even reviews what he goes over from past lectures! He definitely knows his chemistry. He makes you practice, but it is so helpful! Absolutely recommend him!
Lectures are broken down and thoroughly explained. The material is hard in general but he explains it well. Allows you to work together on labs. Very generous with homework due dates. Extremely nice and funny. Gives us lots of slack when it comes to quizzes, homework, and gives partial credit to wrong answers on exams. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Professor Larson is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. The material is hard, but he explains it thoroughly, so attendance is important! He lets you use your hand written notes on all your quizzes, so make sure to take good notes. He genuinely cares about the class and he wants you to pass. Highly recommend taking him!!
Easy class if you attend! Goes over everything in simple terms and makes things easy to understand. Assigns homework each day but its due when there are quizzes. Helps with your lab if needed and allows partners except for one lab. 4 tests including the final which is not cumulative. Super understanding and has the best dry humor.
One of the most caring professors at dvc! He goes through the material slowly so everyone understands. He Even brings snacks! He puts online what he went through that day and posts worksheets. Study those to practice for the exam. Hes easily accessible outside of class for take home quizzes you might have and is always open to help. I recommend!!!
Professor Larson is amazing ! I recommend him to everyone. Hes a great professor & a great person . He would bring our class snacks every class period and was always helpful.
He is aware of the impracticality/meaninglessness of Organic Chemistry for most people, so he adjusts his method based off of that fact. Good guy. Always gave out snacks, and expressed concepts clearly. Overall made the experience a lot less hard than it easily could have been.
I loved Prof. Larson! He is a super caring guy and does a lot to help you. Before Covid hit he would pass out snacks and was always very available to help during his office hours. The transition to online went pretty smoothly and I still enjoy his video lectures although they aren't the same without all the jokes he made in class! Highly recommend!
Professor Larson is THEE best professor ever! Hes funny, down to earth, explains things so well, and genuinely wants you to pass. If you take notes on his lectures, youll do well in his exams. I never had to read the book; you only need it for the hw problems. Thought I for sure wouldnt pass during whole pandemic but hes an amazing professor!
Prof Larson was my last hope before having to switch my major since I've dropped this class before with a different prof. There really needs to be more people as passionate and knowledgable about what they're teaching as he is. He made it as easy as Chem can get and I love his "dad jokes" lol. Take him he's life changing!
I am currently taking his chem 109 class ONLINE. I was very afraid to take this class because of what I heard about the class itself. However he really breaks down each concept for you so that if you watch videos in sequence and take notes you will understand and do great on tests. He is understanding as well. Doesnt tell you what isnt relevant.
Professor Larson was a breath of fresh air during this online season! His lectures are easy to follow through and I was able to understand the material. Make sure to watch all the lectures and complete the practice worksheets because they come in handy for his exams and quizzes. He is by far one of my favorite professors at DVC!
I was terrified to take Chemistry but Professor Larson was able to explain difficult concepts in clear, understandable ways and with a good dose of humor as well. He was always available for office hours and will spend a lot of time with students and it is clear he wants his students to succeed. It's weird, but I actually enjoyed Chemistry.
I'm not sure why he doesn't have a 5/5 rating because he is one of the best professors I've had, wish I could have met him in person. This class was online due to covid. His lectures were clear making it easy to understand. I personally think he went above and beyond to make sure we understood the material in order to do well in the class.
Prof. Larson is a truly excellent teacher. Explains complicated concepts in a way that's easy to understand and makes chemistry fun to learn. You need to do the work and study, but he gives you everything you need to be successful. Good sense of humor, fair grader, and genuinely wants to help his students. You will not regret taking his class.
I really enjoyed my semester with Prof L. When online, you have to be on top of when you watch lectures and do homework, but it's manageable. Prof L adds humor in his lectures, and breaks down hard topics into the simple things. Also sends a weekly email so that everyone knows whats due. Signs it with a "Ok!". Makes me smile when I see it. Ok!
best professor I ever had at DVC. The most caring and understanding guy, gives extensions and help whenever its needed. His grading system is perfect and he honestly made me feel really at ease with chemistry. All deadlines and exams are super flexible and his lecture videos are also kinda funny. Take him for any class!!!!
Nice guy. Let me make some corrections to an exam I turned in a few minutes after the deadline. Grade is 65% from the four exams but they're very straightforward and you should have no issue if you watch the lectures + do the labs/hw. Graded a bit slow but nothing outrageous.
He is like the Bob Ross of CHEM 109. I love his lectures. Hes super caring and understanding and will give out extensions if asked. You need to watch the lecture videos to pass this class. He makes it easy to understand it. I really loved having Professor Larson as my chem 109 Professor!!
So I told Prof Larson that he is the Bob Ross of Chemistry, & he replied with Bob Ross is the Wayne Larson of Painting. Imitation is the finest form of flattery so props to the person who is borrowing my joke. He really makes you laugh with his Dad Jokes & sense of humor while keeping his lectures very informative. No graded hmwk but good practice
I couldn’t say enough good things about Larson!!! No weekly meetings, but 3 required lab meetings during the semester. Chem book required for homework questions, but he teaches pretty much everything in his lectures and grades work very leniently. He keeps things fun, take his class!!!!!
Professor Larson was one of the best science teachers I've had. He was a great first experience in chemistry class. This was all online so I totally could've gotten an A but I am not the best at time management. He responds within minutes to messages- even on weekends! VERY accessible outside of class. He is kind and makes a lot of dad jokes.
I would highly recommend him! You can see his passion for teaching, but also his knowledge that we don't need to know everything in the textbook. I wish I had teachers like him in high school. The course material is hard but watch all his lectures and you should be great! I actually learned chemistry while also feeling supported. Rare.
Prof Larson is an amazing professor. He is very accessible outside of class with having office hours every single day. He explains difficult topics into something that is easy to understand and simple. Does take a long time to grade stuff but not a big deal. 4 exams and some quizzes.
Professor Larson tries his best to make this class fun and straightforward. Hes a great professor. If you're nervous about this class because you feel like you're not good at chem, STUDY !!!Go to his office hours and rematch his lectures. The class gets harder over time but if you study and do your homework on time you should get a decent grade.
Prof. Larson is super funny and engaging. I enjoyed his teaching style so much I plan to take another chem class with him. He is always willing to answer any questions and reassures you. ask questions!! he uploads all the lectures on canvas and provides practice quizzes and exams. study hard though because it can get tricky!
I took Prof Larson in FA22 as a return to in person classes. Considering O Chem is such a tough subject, he is an incredibly gifted teacher whose lectures are easy to follow if you put in the effort. He's hilarious, super kind and relatable and takes pride in his job as an educator! *note card allowed for each exam!
He barely gives any study material and the hw from the book doesn't represent the questions he puts on the tests. The worksheets do but he only gives one per chapter with 10 questions. His lectures are long and exams are 60% of your grade, quizzes 25%, and theres no hw points. He takes a long time to grade too so I couldn't even drop.
His lectures are engaging and fun, always going on tangents which i loved bc it kills the tension in the room making it easier to speak up in class. He is also a good teacher who knows how to simplify a lesson you can tell he knows what hes teaching and hes been doing it a while. only thing is tests R worth 65% of ur total grade w 3 per semester.
Professor Larson was a great teacher. He made me enjoy and understand chemistry always made dad jokes that would make the lecture entertaining and made it comfortable to ask questions. no hw but tests are worth 60% of grade allowed note cards.
Though participation isnt mandatory for lectures,i would say that it is highly recommended! FYI his jokes r funny, very much dad jokes
Every day, I wake up grateful to have taken him. Such a funny guy; his lectures are enjoyable, and he does a great job of keeping you engaged. Made chemistry SO easy to understand. Very little homework, labs were super clear, exams were relatively easy (you get a notecard). Sets you up well for chem 120!
I have never written a review before, but I had to for him. Absolute best teacher I have ever had. He is the kindest and funniest teacher ever! You can't hate him. I was so scared going into this class, but Professor Larson made learning each concept so easy. He is one of the rare professors who truly want to see you succeed. Thank you professor
The best teacher! I have never left class confused. He was very understanding and is always willing to help! He make class interesting and always had me excited to go!
Professor Larson brings a fun, engaging teaching style to this class. While tests are worth 65%, his clear explanations and available resources like Unstuckstudy make it manageable. Definitely recommended if you're looking for an enjoyable chemistry course.
This guy is literally amazing. If you're nervous about chem or difficult material, take this class. Professor Larson is the funniest and smartest professor I've ever met. He makes everything so easy and fun. The homework is not bad at all and helps a lot, plus he never lets you leave lab unless you completely get the topic! He's the best. Take him!
Genuinely the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are funny and engaging, his labs are streamlined and generally take far less time then the allotted period, he clearly has iterated on his material making changes where problems occur and genuinely cares about his students, he brings snacks. If you have the opportunity TAKE HIM!
My favorite professor! Prof. Larson is very down to Earth, easy going, and great to talk to. He cares about chemsity and his students. He made his lectures interesting and fun, he's also hilarious. He's very helpful in office hours, in class, and in lab. And always tries to answer your questions. Class is heavily weighted on tests and labs.
Probably the best professor I've had so far. He makes class funny and a joy to be in. He makes sure you understand all the material and will answer all your questions. Sometimes he forgets to post the homework on Canvas, but you can email him or tell him next time you see him and he'll post it. Do the work and you'll get an A.
Larson was a really great teacher, and his lectures are very easy to follow. I highly suggest you go to lecture, even though he posts a video lecture online. I found that he would explain certain things in lecture that would not be on the online video, so attend as much as possible. Very funny, very kind, and very good explanations of the content.
Great professor and really wants you to succeed. Overall grade is heavily based on 3 tests, so lab points are important cushion. He is SO understanding and flexible, but I felt like many of my peers took advantage of his kindness - being constantly late/talking so much during class. He respects his students, so pls give him respect in return!
The instructor often becomes frustrated and raises his voice, which makes the classroom environment stressful. His explanations are sometimes unclear, and this can make it difficult for students to grasp the material. Without additional support, students may struggle academically in this class.
Don't be fooled by his casual snacking in class his teaching is a method is trash. If you don't do all the research yourself, this professor will wreck your GPA, and since the course is worth 4 credits, the damage is even worse
amazing professor! i have PTSD from a previous terrible chem prof but larson is very passionate about his job and can explain hard stuff without using confusing big words. he's very funny, caring, and also brings snacks. i look forward to coming to class. he actually said he wants to get an awful review before he retires.
Professor Larson's lectures were super easy to follow. He's very light hearted and funny, which helps to make the class not feel overwhelming. For exams we're allowed two notecards and if you miss a class he provides online lecture videos. As long as you do the work this class should be a breeze. As a bonus he provides snacks during lecture.
Amazing professor!! Very funny, and extremely helpful if you ask him to clarify or go to office hours. Not only did everyone enjoy class, he cares about his students and make lectures exciting. He also says he never wants to make a student feel bad about asking a question/not understanding and he really does mean it. Take his class if you can!!!
I was nervous going into Chem 109. I'm extremely lucky I had Dr. Larson, he was the best! His lectures are very straightforward and easy to follow, cracks jokes in between as well! Labs were always simple. Just do your part. Dr. Larson also provides practice tests before an actual exam and man are they such a big help!
Great guy! Great professor! Mr. Larson's lectures were amazing, everything he teaches is exactly what is in exams. I wish I would've told Mr. Larson how much I appreciated him being a great teacher throughout the semester.
