This guy is hard to understand and mostly rambles to himself. He is not very good at leading discussions, but you can tell he wants to be good. He tries hard but ultimately attending discussion didn't help. Going over his discussion problems on your own is essential to success on the exam. Some of the exam questions are word for word from discussion
Nice guy, class was alright. He's pretty helpful during discussion. The new lecture/discussion set up just makes things harder.
Very nice guy. He will do almost anything to help out his students. He provides you with all the resources to succeed on the homework and weekly quizzes. You just have to take the time to actually do the work.
One of the best teachers out there. He isn't there to trick you. He wants you to do well. Too bad Physics 126 has been officially removed from U of M.
This class was absolutely wonderful & professor Lau was no exception. He is somewhat difficult to follow at times, but if you have any questions, he's extremely helpful and kind.
Professor Lau is awesome! He take's his time to make sure you understand concepts and also does his best to make exams easy and straightforward. He's also very kind, helpful, and funny.
Wayne Lau was a great guy. He genuinely cared about our success, and he tried to help us understand the concepts. If you have to take physics, take it with him because he is very helpful and tries to help you succeed.
I can sincerely say one of the best professors I have had at U of M. I was definitely scared to take physics at Michigan, but Professor Lau's clarity, helpfulness, attentiveness to the class's needs, and kindness definitely alleviated this stress. He really wants students to understand the concepts, and made the tests challenging but fair. AMAZING
Dr. Lau is one of the more congenial professors I've had at UM. He's happy to engage with the students in lecture and know them personally. He explains problems and concepts well and enjoys answering questions. I even took him up on an offer for lunch. He wants everyone to do well. Highly recommend him!
First professor I've liked enough to add a rating here. He was extremely helpful before/after class and during office hours. Everything was very fair, just make sure you put the effort in and he will meet you halfway. Also he is very willing to write you a reference letter as long as you've talked to him a few times.
Excellent professor who clearly loves the topic but understands not all students love physics as much as he does; is extremely fair and wants everyone to succeed (get an A). Easy course with a funny and knowledgeable professor.
Very difficult to understand if you have problems with accents. Not the greatest English speaker. He will attempt to help you if needed, but isn't the greatest at explaining things more than one certain way. So if you don't understand what he's saying in lecture, asking in office hours is pointless. You'll have to put in a lot of extra effort.
He's a really great professor and doesn't want anyone to fail. If you've never take physics before nor interested in it, this class will be difficult. It's still pretty easy to get an A on exams if you study hard and write a whole bunch of equations down. Gives clicker questions away.
Professor Lau was so nice and genuinely wanted everyone to do well. The exams weren't terrible, there were extra credit opportunities, and he practically gave clicker answers away. I was a little worried about his accent at first but got used to it quickly. Going to miss him in 235!
Professor Lau is one of the nicest professors at UM and a great physics lecturer. He makes the exams fair and similar to practice/homework questions. The class is a lot of work, but what you put into it, you get out. Receiving an A is very doable, especially since Professor Lau wants to help all of his students succeed.
Professor Lau is the best. He's slightly difficult to understand, but he offers extra credit opportunities and is extremely helpful. The exams can be tricky, but they're fair. Make sure you take plenty of practice exams before your exams. They help immensely.
Dr. Lau is the best. He's incredibly entertaining and genuinely wants everyone to succeed in his class. Go to office hours if you're confused. He's always willing to help. The material can be tricky at times, but his exams are fair.
Wayne is the man. One of the nicest professors I've had at U of M. His explanations can be hard to follow sometimes but he is very approachable for help. Class was also much easier than I expected. Do the practice exams!
Very good professor. Very helpful.
Professor Lau is amazing. I absolutely dreaded taking physics, but it actually ended up being enjoyable! Practice tests and problems help a lot. Also make sure that you understand the online homework. The assigned readings don't help much.
Lau made this class very easy. He literally wanted everybody to do well, so about half the class got A's. He probably understood that most of the class was only interested in "checking the box" for med school rather than legitimately learning physics. The only thing was that you go into 235 unprepared for how rough it gets.
He's a great teacher, but I feel that he gives way too many A's for an intro class. I find it very clear that many of the people who got A's don't actually know their physics very well. It shows when they go on to 235. I definitely agree with the last rating that most people in the class only have the check the box kind of attitude.
He's helpful in that he wants everybody to get a good grade, thus helping your GPA. Most people taking this class only care about getting an A rather than a good understanding of physics. This class, while it is an easy A, I would say was not adequate preparation for 235.
So I really hated this class because, like other weeder classes, it seemed like the exams were a separate entity from the lectures. As in, to do well on the exams you just had to power through a bunch of practice tests. But Lau seemed to really want people to understand and do well so if you have to take this class, I'd take it with him.
Wayne is absolutely wonderful, he is so fun and so smart. But going to class will not help you learn anything. Instead of working out problems, there are just a bunch of equations on the board. And when the equations are worked out, its still a page worth of work that is very difficult to follow. Mastering Physics is even worse.
This class is easy for a physics class. You might not learn as much, but you'll very likely get the grade you want. You're just taught that something works this way, know it, and the reason is too complicated to explain. Basically, just do lots of practice exams. He generally reuses the same questions with some modification for the most part.
Professor Lau is an incredibly nice person; he wants his students to get high scores on his exams, so he makes them fairly straightforward. The only downside is that you don't learn much aside from how to plug numbers into formulas to get the right answer.
The way I learned physics through lecture and the class itself was plug-and-chugging formulas. I did not truly understand the material, nor the equation for that matter. Dr. Lau is a good teacher, but if you really want to know what's happening, I might have to suggest 140.
Wayne is an incredible teacher - he understands that the class is a pre-med req, so he always slips in encouragement for our careers in his lectures. Although his lecture slides can be a bit confusing, he is SO helpful and his tests are generally very easy. This year, his final was a lot harder than expected, but Wayne is a very generous grader.
Professor Lau isn't a very clear or good lecturer, but Physics 135 is a VERY easy class. All you need to do is read the lecture notes online and take a couple practice exams, and you'll get at least A's on the exams. Unfortunately, attendance is mandatory due to iClicker questions. Otherwise, there would be no need to go to lectures at all.

He is the best physics teacher I have ever had but the amount of work he requires is a ton. He is definitely able to help if you ask for it and his lectures prepare you well for the exams.
Wayne Lau's lectures are phenomenal and he's super funny in class. The final exam was a nightmare.
You honestly don't learn much in physics 135 beyond plugging and chugging, but the class is not terribly difficult. You will have to spend time in the help room to learn and get the homework done. Lau tends to give out better grades than other intro physics professors. However, I didn't feel that this class was adequate preparation for 235.
Professor Lau is the man. His lectures usually have a fun element to them at some point to break up the monotony that is physics material. He's one of the most genuine professors I've come across, and sincerely wants everyone to do well in his class. Tests are tough, but the curve is more than fair.
Wayne is great and wants everybody to do well. This semester if you did well on the midterms you didn't have to take the final, but in the future I think you can only drop a midterm and everybody has to take the final. You might not learn the material in enough depth, but the learning assistants are very helpful in the help room for the homework.
Lau is great and really wants everybody to succeed. Physics is a tough subject for everybody, but Lau makes it so that even if you are not especially great at physics, an A is still attainable. Use the help room. Lau, the 135 learning assistants, and some learning assistants for other courses are all very helpful for the homework.
Coming from somebody who had zero physics in high school, Professor Lau did a great job conveying the topics across simply enough in lecture that you could understand them enough on the homework and use that to prepare for the exams. You get to drop an exam so I didn't even have to take the final. My only A so far in premed prereqs
Wayne Lau is my favorite teacher at the university to date. He respects his students and you can tell he wants everybody in his class to succeed. Every lecture is connected to the medical field, making the class very interesting. Study with his old exams and this class is not hard at all.
Lau really wants everybody to do well. You might not learn that much, but Lau understood that everybody was pre health and therefore grades matter. Most of your grade was easy points (iclicker, mastering physics). There is some extra credit available for mastering physics in case you miss a few problems by accident in the regular assignments.
I didn't think I could be a doctor before this class. Wayne tells me every lecture that I can be a doctor. I will now be a doctor. 10/10 would recommend.
Wayne is literally the man. All of his exams are past exam problems and they are really not that bad. Give him the respect he deserves as a professor and he will do the same for you. Amazing!
Wayne makes the class pretty easy, since many exam questions were recycled from the practice exams. However, you really don't learn much in the class. He basically just throws a bunch of equations at you and you just plug and chug. You do have to show up to class for the iclicker questions though.
This class was easy for a physics class, but I have to admit I learned very little from attending lecture. Sure, the fact that an A was not that hard to achieve was great, but I'm not sure how to feel about 235 now. I honestly would not have gone to lecture if it weren't for the iclickers. Use the help room, as you learn more there.
Wayne is the man! He is the nicest, most down to earth professor I have had here. He cares about every single student and will do anything to help you get the grade you want. Take Wayne.
Lau was very sweet and cared about students, but wasn't the best teacher. His slides were full of too much information making it difficult to know what was relevant. Too many examples and not enough explaining. Yes the class is easy and exam questions are often recycled, but you don't learn very much. Doesn't set you up well for 235.
Have to go to lecture because of iClicker. Lectures are absolutely pointless, but Wayne lau makes it entertaining. The class is easy because you get notecards on the exams, and the exams are almost identical to the practice exams provided. You also get to drop a test, so you dont take the final if you get the score you want after the 3 midterms
He cares and is very entertaining, but he's a relatively confusing lecturer and his slides filled with unnecessary information. Beware, if you have a weak background in physics, this class is a fair amount of work. If you put the work in though, you will do well since the exams are relatively straightforward. Focus on the practice exams, not HW
Lau is one of the sweetest professors I've ever known. He will try his best to teach and help you. Nonetheless, think of this class as two separate things: Lecture - go and enjoy the Lau experience. Not only is Lau very entertaining but he also gives amazing insight into the physics of the body. Exam - DO PREVIOUS EXAMS and you'll get an A+
The exams are quite easy so long as you study past exams (he reuses a lot of questions). I taught myself most of the material right before the exams and just went to class for the iClicker points. He's helpful if you ask him questions outside of class; he really wants everyone to do well in the class! One exam is dropped.
Dr. Lau was one of my favorite professors at the university of michigan. His lectures were always fun, and he is hilarious. His exams are also quite fair, as long as you do the practice exams before each test. A great guy!
Prof. Lau may not be the best professor in the world, but teaches the material well enough for every student to succeed. He knows most students in the class are pre-med and makes the class very easy to get an A, he gives you the iClicker answers and drops your lowest exam. Overall, he's a really cool guy who wants all of his students to do well.
He is such a great guy. His lectures are kind of confusing but he makes up for it by being the best professor. He cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. Definitely recommend taking physics with him!
Wayne is awesome and by far better than any of the 235 professors. If you have to take physics, take 135 with Wayne! He is super nice and makes lecture very entertaining and funny. The exams are just problems from previous exams and you get to drop your lowest one, so you may be able to get away with not taking the final.
He was such a nice professor and genuinely wanted the students to do well. He realized that science classes are not easy and did his best to help us. An incredible and extremely funny professor- one of my favorites!
Going to lecture is pointless but mandatory because of iclicker. Wayne is a cool guy but you honestly dont need to pay attention to lecture at all to do well as long as you do the practice exams because they are the same as the exams.
Wayne is such a nice guy and genuinely wants everyone to do well. He makes lecture very entertaining and enjoyable and explains concepts pretty well.
Wayne Lau is the sweetest professor I've met. His demos are hilarious too. The class is easier than I anticipated because we get to drop an exam and 6 lectures/iClickers, we're allowed to bring notecards to the exams (which are exactly like the past exams), and there's extra credit for the online homework. I wish I could take him for 235!
Dr. Lau tries to give it his all, but the class is just poorly structured (not a quality unique to classes taught by Lau). He leaves the i-Clicker open which allows you to change your answer if you are indeed wrong. Didn't read the book, didn't go over the slides. Just went through the practice exams, and took every question off of 6 practice exams
Wayne's really chill, but he doesn't teach at all. You'll have to teach yourself physics if you take the 135/235 series. They try to take all the math out of physics, which makes it a lot more conceptual. I don't like the style, but it's pretty easy to get an A in this class.
Wayne is probably the funniest professor I have had throughout my time as an undergrad. He really wants every student to succeed and makes lectures interesting.
Lau really cares about his students. It's really easy to pass if you do the homework (there's a lot) and show up, but you don't really learn much.
Dr. Lau is the BEST! Do not take Physics 135 unless it's with him. His tests are straight from the practice exams, he makes in class demos fun and interesting, and he essentially gives you the answers to 99% of the iclicker questions. He's also an incredibly kind man and will go above and beyond if you need assistance.
Dr. Lau is a really great professor and he made physics bearable. He's super funny and easygoing, and he gives you the answers to most of the iclickers. As long as you put in the work doing the practice exams- you'll be fine and do great in the class!
Dr. Lau was fantastic for Physics 135. He explained things very well, and always worked hard to ensure that everyone understood the topics. Additionally, he had availability in the physics help room for additional assistance outside of class, and was a very kind individual overall.
Wayne Lau may be the greatest man to ever live. He is so passionate about physics, and makes it so interesting with a lot of different experiments. His exams are super easy and as long as you do the practice exams beforehand you'll do well.
Hilarious man, basically tells you all the answers to iclicker questions. If you copy old practice exam questions on your notecard for exams it's super easy and I didn't really learn anything in this class but I had fun.
Wayne is an angel. Gives you iClicker answers and is hilarious and cute. Didn't learn a lot from the class but as long as you take a bunch of practice exams (2013 or later) you'll be fine. There's a ton of extra credit on mastering physics where you can make up for lost points. I wouldn't take this class with the other prof if possible.
Wayne is great, he's super funny and wants everyone to do well. If you've never taken physics before it can be a little stressful, once you get the hang of the class you'll be fine. Take all the practice exams and but the formulas on your note card.
Wayne is one of the best people out there. But unless you REALLY put in a lot of your own time into physics 135, you won't learn a thing. Biggest tip: know how to use a notecard and know how to do the questions on the practice exams.
Wayne is really a very nice guy and he genuinely wants all his students to do well in the class. You won't learn that much in the lectures but if you do lots of practice exams, you will do well on the exams since many questions on the exams are similar to the practice exams.
This semester Physics 135 got restructured into a way more DIFFICULT class, so the past reviews are not accurate for the course currently. Practice exams aren't as helpful, and test averages have gone down. It's not an easy premed course anymore.
Lau seems like a really good guy who does his best to try to make lecture more entertaining with demos. He switches the slides very fast and he has so much material on the slides that its hard to know whats important and whats not so everyone only shows up for the clickers and learn nothing. Tests arent like practice exams anymore so its hard.
Dr. Lau, in all honesty, might be one of the worst professors at Michigan. Ive been doing well despite the restructuring of this class, but only because of tutors/prior experience. Dr. Lau does not teach, and his exams are extremely difficult relative to his lack of guidance both in and out of class. Take this course somewhere else!
Wayne Lau is a nice guy, but this class has become far too difficult given the fact that it's just an introductory course. I don't understand the reason behind the restructuring, as it is not helping us learn the material any better. Don't take this class here if you have the chance. No level of studying seems to help for the exams. Good luck.
Hes a nice guy but Im not really learning the material or doing well on exams because his teaching doesnt align with the restructuring of the class.
This class made my semester hell!! I have maintained all As throughout my time at UM, however I think this class is going to mess my GPA up. Dr. Lau is a super nice guy, but not a good teacher. Exams are really difficult, NO THEY ARE NOT LIKE PRACTICE EXAMS ANYMORE.
His class is useless. His slides are packed with obsolete information. What he says makes no sense. He tries to be funny; he's not, and his demos are pointless too. He makes his exams too difficult, and he expects us to know everything when he doesn't teach us anything. He assumes that we just know everything and that we'll produce it on the exams.
Students are literally left on their own in this class because the lectures don't help AT ALL for the exams. Since the class changed, the practiceexams don't help either. Lau doesn't even admit the class got harder and he gets offended when we question the average he says. don't expect the grade you were looking for. So difficult.
The new ratings do not accurately reflect Wayne. The class went from being a super A to a class that you actually have to pay attention in and people dont like that. His lectures may hold unnecessary information but its easy to tell what he is emphasizing. Overall good and entertaining teacher!
His ratemyprof rating went way down just from this semester so I would recommend not taking the class here, as it has become far too difficult considering it's an intro class. Everyone studies the same way, if not more, than previous students and get way lower exam scores because they have become impossible pretty much. Worst class I have taken.
Lau's teaching style is horrible. Instead of taking time explaining how concepts should connect, and when to use which concept, he spends most of the class on random applications of the material. I try to go through the slides to find formulas and over half the slides are useless information. Avoid this class until they improve the structure.
Due to recent changes in the course, it's extremely difficult to do well on exams. Wayne's lectures and teaching style do not prepare you for the exams, which are much more difficult than the practice exams. Lecture slides are too packed with content, making it difficult to pick out important concepts. He's a nice guy, but not a great lecturer.
While he seems quite intelligent about physics, he's unable to break concepts down and explain material to students. His lecture slides are excessively packed & his explanations are overcomplicated. He does NOT prepare you for the exams well, and everything I learned I spent time teaching myself through khan academy, google and old practice exams.
He makes me not hate going to a class that I hate
Don't listen to everyone else. If you know how to write equations on a notecard, you will get an A. Also, the class never "got harder." (I took it Fall 2018)
Wayne definitely enjoys the subject he teaches and does a good job of engaging students. My major issue is not with him, persay, but how he uses the materials. The lectures are dense and are beyond introductory level, but mandatory for attendance - practice exams are the only true way to prepare. HW HEAVY but HW is not good prep. for exams.
Dr. Lau is a nice guy, but he does not explain the material in an introductory way. I've never taken physics before and I've never been more confused in a class in my life. Exams are supposedly based on practice exams, but only about 50% of the problems come from old exams. I never knew what to expect on exams. Homework was easy, but not helpful.
Wayne is a great guy. While his lectures tend to deviate from what you actually need to know sometimes, he always emphasizes the important things and makes sure you get the clicker questions correct. The class is NOT harder now, just be sure to go through the clicker questions on the posted post-lecture slides b/c exam questions stem from them.
Wayne is one of the nicest professors at the university. A lot of people are complaining about how he teaches, but it's mostly because he has so little time to cover so much material. He is always happy to help and he'll keep trying to explain concepts to someone until they understand. He's also a clown that tries to get students to be engaged.
Wayne is an awesome person, but not the best professor. Time outside class, especially if you haven't taken higher-level physics before, is required. Your time is best spent reviewing post-Fall 2018 exams because those questions are most similar to current questions
I hate to say this because Wayne is a nice guy, but he simply is just not a good teacher. Ever since the class has changed, his true colors of teaching have come out. His lectures are wasted with demos and slides that aren't useful. People who don't come into the class with a strong physics background are the ones who suffer the most. Awful class!
I found Dr. Lau's lectures to be somewhat helpful, but they are mandatory regardless because of iClicker questions. If you just want to get through Physics and are ok with taking a fairly easy boring class, then Physics 135 with Dr. Lau is what you're looking for. If you are actually interested in Physics, take calculus-based instead.
Dr. Lau is a very funny, entertaining, and caring instructor. The class is not an "easy A", but the material is relatively straightforward and the practice exams help a ton. Dr. Lau was very kind and helpful during office hours, and was very willing to clarify confusing information.
Lau is an okay prof, but lecture and online homework wasn't very helpful. The class isn't too difficult if you put in the work (drill practice exams fall '18 and onwards). There's a lot of outside work like iclickers, daily "quizzes", and online homework so there is a buffer/cushion outside of exams.
Wayne Lau is the sweetest professor I've had at UMich so far. He really tries his best to make his lectures more interesting with demonstrations, which is tougher to do online. I would say the course material really isn't that hard, just make sure you don't fall behind and keep track of the equations well and you'll be fine!
The class was dry, lectures were useful but a bit confusing. Practice problems are a must.
The transfer to online only due to covid was done poorly. The quiz content doesnt match the homework or lectures and he disregarded any student input about it. Very minimal office hours with unhelpful lectures.
Nice professor, but his lectures just arent helpful. All you really have to do to be successful in this class is to do past exam questions since his exams are pretty similar to these. I would say for each exam (or weekly quizzes if during COVID), do the questions from Winter 2018 to the most recent past exam and you should do well in the class.
Lecture slides were jam packed with so much info that they were so confusing/unhelpful. I recommend skimming through them and then hitting up an SLC study group/ULA problem solving sessions/past practice exams. Lau reuses a lot of past questions so practice/compile old questions to access during quizzes/exam
Lau was great in the online format because his exams and quizzes were basically the old practice quizzes and past exams. I went into this class feeling anxious but the online format was very nice. He gives only weekly quizzes and one final exam. Also, there is mastering physics HW but nothing too crazy.
I had Lau for PHYS135, which was taught asynchronously without discussion sections. Lau held quiz review sessions every week to help us prepare. He genuinely cares about his students doing well and does not try to trick you on quizzes/exams. There was an optional textbook we could buy for this course, but I never had it. Try to take his class!!
Professor Lau - virtually - was probably the worst experience I have had so far in this fiasco. His microphone for lectures was really quiet and had a distorted sound - so that definitely didn't help. Furthermore, the lectures weren't really helpful for the material.. If you want to pass - DO AS MANY PRACTICE QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE!!
Very charismatic professor excited about physics. He used to have amazing reviews and ratings until the curriculum changed as this is my Senior year. He still is a great professor and the class is getting more structured. Welcoming office hours and likes to clarify complicated concepts that the lecturer will not cover
He is such an amazing professor! He is so kind and genuinely cares about you as a person and your mental health. He is always willing to help you including outside of class. He is hilarious and so sweet. He makes physics fun to learn and cares about you actually learning the material. I would highly recommend taking any classes that he is teaching!
This is a difficult course, but Dr. Lau goes out of his way to help students in any way that he can. He wasn't the primary lecturer, however he is the sole reason I'm on the borderline of receiving an A- in the class. Dr. Lau is caring and willing to explain and re-explain concepts until they are understood. I was lucky to have him as a professor!
Best professor at UMich hands down!
Dr. Lau really wants students to succeed and like physics. He is great at explaining my questions and clearly cares about his students
If you are taking Physics 150 take the studio with Dr. Lau. He is amazing at explaining and when you ask him a question he will fully explain it to you and work with you until you understand. The only problem is that since there are a bunch of people in studio sometimes it can be hard to get his attention
Engaging lecturer, always seemed excited to be there. Get ready to spend a LOT of time on homework, and for some tough quizzes and exams. Class average on the final was a D, if that's any indication. Don't take if you've got other tough classes already, or if you're not familiar with diff. eq., multivariable calc, and linear algebra.
Dr. Lau has good intentions, but talking loudly into a microphone at 8 am for an introductory physics class made it hard to stomach. He also says "mmk" a lot, which makes me want to pull my hair out. Do not take the studio version of physics 140, attendance is required and based on group homework assignments.
The class average for the final (winter 2023) is 64.3% (Lower quartile: 52.5%, Median: 64.5%, and Upper quartile: 80%). The median letter grade in the course is a B-. He expects you to spend 9 hours per week on this course while giving you low grades.
FA 22. (he insists we use his first name, which I admire) Wayne's lectures were useless to me, and this is partly on me. I attended basically every class, but was always confused. When I read the textbook, I understood everything. To make use of his lectures, you might want to read before going to class. Super nice guy. Confusing lectures. No curve
