Best first year prof I had...funny in non-funny way
Great notes, fairly easy exams, overall nice-guy.
very clear notes... but needs a new wardrobe
very helpful, easy going, great lecture notes, nice person
Very helpful notes, nice professor

Excellent notes; hard midterms make final really easy

He has the BEST notes. They're really clear and he teaches at a good pace. He can be a bit boring, but he takes the time to learn ppl's names!
should not teach first year courses
very good prof..wish he teaches physics, chem, biol, all my math courses afterwards too!
Not a good instructor...
and MATH 101. He teaches well but marks hard. However, I'm also kinda glad he does that. I may not be good at math but I've learned a lot. If he marked easy, I don't think I would've learned as much as I have.
Good and responsible prof. Marks hard and has hard midterms, but it good for you this way.
He's very clear. Marks hard, but has excellent notes for studying. Good prof.
Very very good prof for math 100/101 students. Very helpful and clear. Midterms & Finals are piece of cake if you have Prof. Nagata
Very clear notes! Weekly assignments are hard, but helpful. Again,His notes are PERFECT! many examples, very clear to understand! Thanks, Dr. Nagata!!
Seems really condescending and intimidating at first but it's all part of the process-you get the sh*t scared out of you after nearly failing the mts then end up with A's at the end. Works for us!
EASY EASY EASY! Exams are based on the assignments, and doing assignments for marks gives us the motivation!
Great prof, excellent notes, and assignments are like his exams, so u have nothing to worry about, just do those questions and ur fine.
A very patient prof, explaining every step possible. Clear notes...nice weekly assignments.
Best math prof ever! explains everything clearly, assignments are good reflection of exams, and very approachable!
Great prof! Good lecture notes and assignments. He is very helpful and the course is really interesting.
Good at explaining things clearly. Expectations for assignments could perhaps be a bit clearer, but overall it was a good course with a good prof.
Gives excellent notes!-Very clear and concise. The midterms can be a bit hard; but after finals everything works out pretty well.
Best Math Prof. Period.
His notes rock! His midterms can be a bummer, but if you study and do the homework you can really do well in his class (whereas I did not). Pretty good prof overall
If there's a better Math prof around I'd be shocked. His midterms, especially in Math 100, can be excrutiating, but it pays off come finals time, his midterms make them seem like a cake walk.
Incredibly clear notes. He's probably a robobot sent back in time... Has high expectations on midterms (quite difficult), but prepares you well. Students in his class do much better than other sections on the final.
The Best Prof.
Midterms are harder than some others, but if you do what he tells you to--read the notes, do the suggested problems--this course will be a breeze. His notes and explanation are as good as they get-plus he's a funny man during lecture. Willingly available for help outside class too. Great prof.
He's a great prof. His notes were super clear and gave lots of examples which resembles exam questions. The weekly homework kept you on track. Midterms were usually on the challenging side because they were either long or tricky but he usually scales up so no worries. He makes the text useless.
he's like, the best?!?! dont even think about any other prof. just get him.
midterms - hard, weekly hw - kinda pointless but does keep u ontrack, notes - CLEAR, prepped us quite well for finals. thank goodness for scaling
very very good prof. best prof i had in first year.
He is a funny guy; or atleast he tries to be. Love the fact he wears bedroom slippers to class. Notes are clear and his homework is awesome even if it is pointless. I am studyin hard and I hope his midterm aren't too bad.
Really good prof. FYI - he's a sensei and director of Cdn.Ki foundation - sometype of Jung-fu. No wonder he wears slippers 24/7. Midterms very hard - class avg. 60%. Alrite otherwise
An awesome awesome math prof~ Notes are clear and definitely useful for studying. Also has a very neat handwriting!! :D
Notes very clear, very considerate, great example problems, midterm tested on exactly the material he taught and emphasized. Weekly homework is a hellish but for-your-own-good kind of thing, kept me on track. Side note: Nagata has NINJA skills! lol! Love his weird sense of humour.
Awesome course. Even though the midterm was tough, Nagata made sure you got a good mark if you worked hard. As long as you do well on the assignments / finals, the course is not too bad. Lots of examples and lots of applications, a very good course if you like applications of differential equations.
nice prof, he gives clear examples and explnations. final is a bit difficult
Hi is not that easy as people say. yer, his class is OK maybe,, but tests are not that easy. Final was even harder,
Midterms are tough and he grades even tougher. Weekly assignments (and they are LONG assignments) are hellish but they really do keep you on track as the course spans a lot of material. Now to think of it, I appreciate having the homework. Explains materials very clearly and his notes are excellent. Takes time to explain concepts in office hours.
Quite knowledgeable, yet have no idea how to teach an engineering math class. Ability to assess the student's knowledge in this subject is extremely poor. Course notes are confusing, few examples are given in class, hard homework problems. Expects us to complete a 4 question test in 50 mins when it took himself 30 mins to do one of the questions
cant understand his english, cant read his notes =[ in fact, he's a realli nice man to talk with, just lack of teaching experinece?
Very good professor as he has good notes (imo) and is clear about them. Tells you what you need to know for all the major tests. That being said, THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS. It takes work to succeed in this class as he marks pretty strictly on HW and tests, which I think is a good thing for the final. DOES LIVE NOTES. LIVE NOTES > SLIDES
agreed about the live notes, so much better. if you can't see them, just move up. his notes are very clear with examples and explanations, highlighting important stuff. he's really open to questions, really knows his stuff, and his quizzes are right out of the homework. assignments are much harder but worth it. all in all, a great prof
Great teacher. Mid terms near impossible but final exam was not too bad
Excellent notes that would help you when you do homework questions.. great prof, but just hard course.. second midterm is brutal.
Although his notes were neat, his explanations weren't that good. He seems to have a great personality and he can be witty at times. Just make sure you keep up with homework and quizzes and you'll do just fine in his course. Paying attention is absolutely vital in his class.. make sure you don't have distracting friends!
Nagata is an experienced professor and is very good as an instructor. He places great emphasis on homeworks (mostly not assigned), which really are the key to this course. He is funny and he does crack very witty (and usually insulting) jokes every now and then. The 2nd midterm was brutal.
what can i say... HES MIDTERMS ARE BRUTALLY HARD but the final exam was a tiny tiny bit easier. I failed the first midterm and barely passed the second one and I managed to get a B+ in his course. Nagata was the head of Math 100 prof and he wrote the final exam. He's really good but you also have to do the suggested homework to do well in his cours
Has a lot of quizzes and homework, but if you keep on top of your game and work hard you can definitely get a good grade. Bases a lot of the material on the textbook examples. I liked that he used the chalkboard to write out his notes systematically every class. Overall, he was one of my favourite first year profs.
Just do everything he tells you to do and you'll be fine. Did no extra other than the homework he assigned and got A+.
witty, great notes, very thorough,
Very clear in explanations and easy to understand. He gives quizzes every second week and hand-in homework every other which I find helpful since exam questions were similar to these quizzes and assignments. He does a lot of examples in class along with concepts which helps you understand the theories.
He is very experienced at teaching, and is funny. He cares a lot about his student. Of the 10 professors I had had at UBC so far, he is one of the best. If not, the best. Highly recommended. Thank you so much for all the extra help Dr. Nagata!
Great PROF!! Midterms were quite hard but if you followed what he told you to do, getting an A- was not hard. He gave great notes.
You will be in good hands with this prof. His teaching is a bit slow and he writes EVERYTHING on the projector. All in all, he's a good prof.
Notes are ridiculously neat and organized. Overall, he is a solid teacher - does his job. Nothing good/bad to say.
I gotta say Nagata is great at teaching, especially for first year students. His notes are so clear that I can do my revision very efficiently. I guess switching to his section was the best choice I've ever made!!!
Very good teacher, very hard course
Midterms were evil. Were not based on homework/textbook questions at all. He loves giving out twist questions, so it doesn't matter if you study, you'd still fail the midterms. Hmwk assignments are tedious, and takes 5 hours to do each week.
not at all helpful almost failed cause it was so hard to understand him
His notes are very detailed and very good, and he does a very good job of outlining all the major principles of the course. His homework assignments take a long time to complete however, and his midterms are brutal. He always puts extremely difficult questions on his exams, so no matter how hard you study, it is very hard to do well.
Good for clarity, notes very neat. That being said notes are almost a carbon copy of those in the text book. Results in a very robotic teaching style and understanding of the course. In previous courses i felt like i really understood the math, in this one it sometimes feels more like i'm following protocol. Makes things very technical.
His note is neat and as long as you do all the homework, you will be fine on exams.
Wayne's lectures are organized and clear. He is very approachable and helpful during office hours (almost gives away the answer to assignments... SHHH don't tell anyone!)
I was planning to do grad research in his area, but he's a lightweight. Not a deep thinker. He has no grad students. Probably an ok prof for a first year course.
He teaches very well and make sure that every body understands what he is saying. Best Prof for a first year course
He is a very fair prof who knows his stuff. His teaching style may not be the most interesting, but I suppose it's effective. Make sure you attend class and take down all the notes, or else you'll be lost. Completing the textbook questions can't hurt either.
He's a good prof. Notes & explanations are clear, although his lectures are not very inspiring. Exams are not exactly cakewalks, but there are no surprises.
Well prepared and does a lot to tailor classes for the engineering sections. Sort of impersonal and not great at answering questions, but his lectures are very in depth, very clear, very structured and helpful, but admittedly pretty boring. He's full of really funny sarcastic one-liners that he mutters to himself under his breath, which are fun.
love him
Lectures are worth going to because Dr. Nagata teaches them effectively. I am not that good at math but he taught the course so well that I was able to follow and understand him in lectures. He is funny and likes to tell us content-related jokes. Exams are not that difficult as well. Gives great advice too for study tips. Best math prof ever.
Lectures were essentially straight out of the textbook, but his teaching style is very effective, clear, and easy to follow, and attending lectures definitely helped me out!! Not an easy course, but Nagata made it manageable. midterms were fair, homeworks were usually pretty tedious, and the final was long but overall fair. textbook super helpful!
Was very thorough at the start but later began glazing over harder topics assuming that we had already had learned them in highschool (I know I hadn't). Just copies the textbook onto the board a bit too fast to keep up with. Just go through the textbook notes and practice problems and show up for exams. HW is rough and much harder than the exam Qs.
Great professor, extremely helpful office hours and good lectures
Fairly straightforward professor IMO, mostly only read the direct examples inside lecture slides outside of class and did pretty well on midterms and final since the questions were roughly the same format.
Overall, he was a good prof for MATH 215, and his deadpan humour made it better. The midterms were very easy and the final was not much harder. The material for the tests was exactly what he covered in class. However, the homework was quite confusing at times, and it was a source of frustration for many students, but his class was enjoyable for me.
Prof. Nagata was alright. He communicated the material fine, but the course was boring and he really didn't seem very engaged. No interaction with the class, which was disappointing. Exams were easy technically, but so long that most people did quite poorly due to time.
Dr. Nagata is a very good prof. I enjoyed his classes even though I wasnt in his section. The course tho is messed up and it's not his fault. Way too many questions in the midterms and you have type in your working along with your answer which ultimately slows you down a lot. However, he is a very good prof. If you have him as an option, choose him
I really enjoyed having the treat of lectures by Dr. Wayne Nagata this semester. Math 101 is often not enjoyable for many people, but Dr. Nagata has a sharp wit and good color commentary. He provides a lot of insights into how to develop your mathematical thinking through his philosophical musings. He is also a very skilled mathematician .
meh, speaks very monotone and this class became such a drag, with him making condescending jokes while borderline illegibly doing the lecture notes and leaving everything "for your homework" and "on your own time". but to be fair, first year math is just a shootshow in general so he's not the worst out there. just rip off the bandaid with him
He is pretty funny, I don't know if that is intentional but I really enjoyed his lectures and liked how he explained everything in detail, I would definitely take his class again!
