He seems really mean at times, but he's really very fair and extremely smart
No Comments
In love with himself - but we were in love with him too!
he's a rudeboy, knows his stuff
Dude knows his stuff, and is pretty funny most of the time, always a hard ass...
Can be mean, but also nice. Seems to know his stuff (somewhat). Hard marker!
Great teacher, smart man. Somewhat cocky. Hard marker, but great class.
He seems to know what he is talking about and his lectures are interesting.
Most dynamic professor in Queen's department.

Biased lectures, doesn't encourage student participation, thinks he's great, still gives a good lecture
Great Lecturer, Tough Course. A **** Marker, but interesting p.o.v.
For people in 260 who don't like Cox, you are a pack of fools. I advise you to leave the politics department immediately. By far the best pols prof at Queen's. He has some pretty leftwing views that will keep you entertained. Not an easy marker though
Brilliant and knows it. Very engaging lecturer. Excellent prof.
You will come to love the brilliance and passion that is Cox. Ask him about his previous rock and roll career in California.
He is an excellent lecturer and the material is interesting, so definitely take this course. Be prepared to be marked really hard though.
Soooooooo amazing. If you only take one politics course, take his. Kurdish freedom fighter...
Scares his students at first but actually a really cool guy who had a rock and roll past. Go talk to him and you won't be so intimidated! Very good lecturer- really clear and interesting. The class is pretty hard, but a good class nonetheless.
Wayne is amazingly brilliant and a teacher of high excellence: everyone at Queen's should be required to take his courses.
He is an amazing professor. He seems really fair with late penalties which I like - A LOT. Last year lazy people would get so many breaks with handing things in. I'm glad it wont be tolerated in this class.

He turned me off international relations. But that might not be entirely his fault - the TAs were terrible markers. The second half of the course (pol.econ.) was kind of boring.
Hot for an older guy...
I really liked the first half..it was interesting...Second half on political economy is BORING...The readings are awful and the classes are so bad....I liek the way cox teaches but he is very arrogant and likes to think he is a big shot in IR
He often comes off as arrogant - very arrogant. As though he is the be all and end of all of political scientists studying IR. His assignments are also very difficult. There is challenging, then there is graduate level work.
Awful, Awful class...I was really looking forward to learning about IR, but Cox turned me off from it. He is rude and does not have any concern for his students. His marking was unfair and did not reflect anything he taught in class.
Amazing Class!!! Best Class I took all year. It is very hard but you always look forward to lectures. He cares deeply for his students and wants the best for them however he does not tollerate lateness or Plagerism and has NO sympathy for these students. He is arrogant but if you go talk to him he doesn't talk down to you.
great class, great guy, anyone who bad talks the class of Cox is (a) a moron, (b) has never talked to him outside of class, or (C) is going no where in life.
one of the best i've had to date.......simply a great teacher....definetly has piqued my interest in the program
best class ever! funniest prof, with his conspiracy theories, and random outbursts of swearing while ranting underneath a "Queen's" banner... how does he have a job here? love him or hate him, you'll never be bored in his class, i never wanted to miss a single lecture. i wish he taught more undergrad classes!
he's great! interesting and hilarious, his lectures are straightfoward and make sense. students are rewarded for attending class by the questions he asked in the final exam.
Lazy and self-absorbed. Arrogant wanna-be scholar. Cannot even show the courtesy of responding to e-mails. I definitely would not recommend taking his classes.
Pretentious. With his conspiracy theories, he is an insult to students' intelligence. Swearing and joking make for good entertainment, NOT good teaching. Students do not get with him the solid base they need for continuing with IR. Shouldn't teach intro.
Very funny and interesting He used the large class size as an excuse to be very unforgiving as well as compose all or nothing class requirements(40% Essay 50% exam)I do recommend the class because I havent had one like it yet. Whoever calls him a conspiracy theorist doesnt grasp how valid his arguements are and thus miss the whole point of pols 262
enjoy him while you can. the department did not give him tenure and he will be looking for a job elsewhere
i loved Prof. Cox. I found his lectures to be interesting and very linear/ easy to follow. Cox was passionate about IPE and it showed in every lecture i attended. He also clearly put alot of effort into TA selection, which makes a big difference to the end result of the course in my opinion. i liked the one essay, one exam style as well.
Don't know why this guy is so popular. He is a big conspiracy theorist. One of those "corporations run the world" types. What he teaches is irrelevant to most other courses in IR in upper years. Didn't care for the way he trivialized 9/11 either.
Cox is ill. His lectures are as entertaining as they are educational. Offers a unique perspective in a department mostly filled with the "macho jock politics" of IR. But if you're one of these crypto fascists like my friend a few posts up you might not appreciate Cox's occasional polemics.
He's about as entertaining as one can be at 8:30 Tuesday morning, and definitely keeps me interested in the topic, however, he comes across as extremely arrogant, and I often feel I'm only getting one side of the issues.
Brilliant. He made class interesting and kept me listening, even at 8:30 in the morning. I will take any class he teaches, no matter the subject matter.
intelligent, sexy, great lecturer!
Beware the personality cult surrounding Cox...he's a decent enough Professor, but spends too much time discussing personal stories, and far too little time discussing the readings.
A great lecturer. Very clear on what he does lecture on but goes off on funny tangents which results in not all the material being covered in as much depth as others. Needed to read textbook for full understanding of subject
Appears to be intimidating at first until you speak with him one-on-one. Incredibly nice. Absolutely gorgeous. Very intelligent.
Definitely arrogant. Suspect that how some schools of thought were represented may not square with original, formative texts-do your own investigation if you have an interest in IR.
awesome, keeps you engaged throughout lecture, uses profanity :)
Prof Cox is a favorite among newer students but is a walking joke among upper year students. He is extremely bias and is easily thrown off course by the desire to tell anecdotal stories. If you take one of his courses just spit back up what he has fed you and keep your mouth shut and you'll do fine.
was not clear AT ALL through lectures. he goes off on tangents, does not use powerpoints even as guidelines for what he speaks about. and he doesnt follow usually what he is supposed to talk about according to the syllabus. expected so much more from the class than what we got. Its always very clear he was a history major during his lectures.
This professor provides very interesting lectures. However, lectures often go on a tangent, and without laptops allowed or power points, the lectures can be confusing to organize in your notes. The course was unfortunately balanced on three marks, leaving little room for error. Good professor.
He is overly arogant, biased and goes off on random tangents during lecture. If you have any belief in realism, you will be butchered by him.
Awesome prof! Although he goes quickly through the material, he makes a point of reiterating important information. As well, he takes the time necessary to prepare you for the essay. Be sure to take this class!
Took many courses with Wayne in undergrad. He is by far the most caring and helpful professor I have ever had. Loves to teach and truly wants his students to succeed. Second year IR intro is not a good representation of his style - take upper year classes with him and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Also, end of semester dinners rock.
Very helpful Professor who is clearly interested and motivated to help students learn. Knows the material very well and is an excellent speaker.
Very scary at first but helpful later on in the course.
Cox is an amazing professor, he makes the material interesting and challenges many popular assumptions. The man is brilliant and very interesting, which makes lectures engaging and worthwhile. The work is really hard, attendance matters but you'll learn a lot.
Cox is an interesting guy but for a 2nd year intro to international political economy, he was way too disorganized. After attending every lecture of this course by the time the exam came around I didn't even know what we were supposed to have learned, it was so unstructured. Pretty much DEVS100 but with even less clarity and even more opinion
He lectures with no powerpoints and only has minimal notes in front of him, therefore he can tend to go off on tangents in lectures. I would say he's very knowledgable and willing to answer questions in office hours, but can be hard to follow.
Solid prof. No powerpoint was a change but I personally liked it a lot. Interesting content. May be hit or miss for some people though I can see that.
I would not recommend a course with Wayne Cox. Although he is a very engaging lecturer, he memorizes his lectures before class and would just speak the whole time- no powerpoint or notes. He often got off track, leading us to be very behind. A paper was worth 40%, the exam 50%, with tutorials making up the last 10%, leaving little room for error.
I honestly was terrified of him at first (which he wants). His lectures were amazing and totally worth getting up at 8:30am. He doesn't use slides so you NEED to go to every class. The grading was 50% essay and 50% exam which was terrifying. I still don't know my grade breakdown other than that I got an A- overall. Prior knowledge of IPE is needed.
Great prof. Intense and intimidating, but actually a really good guy once you get to know him. No power points, only anecdotes which gives his lectures really good flow and a continuing narrative. People who trash him, are people who get mad when they don't get an A for doing nothing.
Wayne is a weirdo and he tells virtually all the same stories but tbh, he does it so you remember them. Lots of people either like him unreasonable because he's pretty iconique, or hate him unreasonably because he says that the gender pay gap and structural racism exist. I think he's aight, if you like global development you'll like this course.
SHOUTOUT TO THE HOMIE FOR EXTENDING OUR ESSAY WORTH 50% NOVEMBER 2020!!!!
Genuinely cares about his students, gives a lot of good information on the course and sets you up for succcess!! Favourite prof ever
Gave out his first extension in 19 years to my class (because of COVID) which is great but u gotta time manage a lot normally; a bit intimidating at first but is a super nice guy and its reasonable and understanding. his lectures are actually engaging ( will slow down when there are important points being made); sick guy
wayne is a g, thank u man
Great prof. Really knows what he's teaching. Not many assignments graded on. Tutorials are graded and mandatory. He has some really interesting stories and personal anecdotes.
Prof. Cox is a sick prof, but a tough marker.
This man is a legend. Amazing, exceptional, the best.
Incredible Prof, really challenging and intellectually stimulating course, fun anecdotes, taught the course content like a story! 10/10 recommend.
Doesn't return our one essay (50% of our grade), back on time. Doesn't let us know when he will either
Most pretentious prof. ever. Does not use lecture slides and goes on random tangents during class. Essay was worth 50% of the grade and doesn't provide any usable feedback. Avoid at all costs!!
Intimidating, but amazing Prof. His lectures were extremely engaging and his teaching style made it easy to understand and remember his insights.
Interesting guy but some of his lectures make no sense. He goes on random tangents that are very difficult to follow. We were only graded on the exam and an essay. Weirdly extremely against technology. Intelligent man but kind of full of himself.
Cox is an amazing lecturer! He doesn't use slides, meaning you need to really pay attention to what he saying and attend class. It is not hard at all to pay attention to his lecture because he is such an engaging professor who is clearly passionate and interested in the topics. I could listen to his lecture all day!
dont have a single bad thing to say about the guy.
This is probably the best professor I will ever have in my undergrad, full stop. I mean, he opened my eyes to this topic without powerpoint, just talking and pacing around a room. A true expert. Read the textbook, engage with him, and this will be your favourite class. But if you're a "student" who wants to BS your way through a class, steer clear.
Amazing professor, so knowledgeable, but if your a lazy student that wont come to class then don't take this class. Not hard to do well, if you attend and diligently listen. You will learn a lot. However, two heavily weighted assignments, which is a blessing and a curse. Overall a really great lecturer and would recommend, if your not utterly lazy.
good prof, a harder grader. comes off as arrogant and a little full of himself but you can tell he's smart. interesting content if you are interested in foreign affairs, the UN, and politics on an international scale. only thing I will complain abt this class is the final was worth 40% and the essay was worth 50%; this being one single assignment.
He avoids technology and takes on too many classes, resulting in delayed feedback on papers (graded by TAs, then reviewed by him). His lectures lack structure, as he speaks off the cuff without notes or slides. He is arrogant, and I wouldn't recommend this class. Attendance is essential, exams are based entirely on his lectures.
The only lecture worth going to was the exam review. Other than that, he repeated the same stories about himself or reinstated the exact same points about realism and idealism.
Honestly, Cox has been my favourite professor thus far. He is knowledgeable and drills the core concepts so much that I'll likely never forget them. His teaching style is old-school (tech-free and one paper + final) but surprisingly helpful. I'm usually a lazy student, but this class truly made me want to try my hardest. I highly recommend it!
Professor Cox knows his stuff and delivers a very engaging lecture. I would not recommend him to students unwilling to attend class/do readings, as he strays away from using technology or posting lecture content. If you are willing to put in the work, I would argue he is the best professor in the department.
