His class is 4 test (22.5% each 50 ?s each) 3 exams 1 cumulative final and an ethics assignment(10% and 10 ?s). Each test covers 5 chptrs (120pgs). On average 5 students get an A on the test the the mean is a high D. Study the online resource and read the chapters (book is a must). This class is hard because very little margin for error
His lectures are STRAIGHT from the book. Even the examples are the same that the book gives. Very boring, but he tries to get the class involved & actually learns your name. BUT you have to attend class cuz if not he takes off lots of pts. Final is cumulative but 75% of the last set of material the the rest from all semester.
I don't know why people are complaining. Slough is an awesome teacher! It's so easy to get a B in this class without even trying and an A if you just put in a few extra minutes. All you have to do is read the book and you will do fine! He's incredibly nice and one of my favorite teachers.
What's with the bad comments? His lectures are from the book, but he tells interesting anecdotes. Test prep could not be easier, just study terms from the book, and all exam questions are straightforward. 4 tests, and he cancels class every other week and gives a super easy online assignment instead. He takes attendance though. Easy A.
He was an awesome teacher. The subject was pretty clear but his tests are a bit wordy. I have a B in the class with out reading the text and I would definitely have a higher grade if I read. I suggest taking him
He does a great job! also listens to what you have to say if you drop by his office. Go to class read the material and its easy. 5 online webinars and 4 exams
Slough is the man. He s a sales professional with real world experience. Extremely helpful, and if you show a little interest, he makes life easy. tests are out of the book and he tells you what will be covered on the exam ahead of time. final sales call was stressful, but he graded it fairly. Got an A.
Slough is the man. Super helpful, and a wealth of information. He is a really understanding professor and can work around your schedule sometimes. His tests are online at-home essay tests, and not too hard at all. This class is HIGHLY recommended if you intend to pursue a sales career.
Dr. Slough is awesome! He is very understanding of your situations. His online assignments make it very possible to get an A. Class attendance is mandatory!! Point are deducted if you don't come. Tests are fair. Just study and you will do well. Great professor.
He seems really strict on the first few days, but as the semester goes along he is very understanding of your situations. He is a very good teacher, and his example he uses in class always come to your mind during the test. I got a B, but didnt spend as mcuh time as i should have to get an a
Nice guy, really knowledgeable about the material, comes off strict the first few classes with his contract and all, but he's not strict at all. Exams are easy if you prepare, easy online assignments, not much homework; overall, easy/great class!
Pretty straight-forward professor. Knows his stuff. Vocab intense class, used a BUNCH of flash cards.
Print all the power points & follow along in lectures. Take every vocab & make a flash card. If you make flash cards, really study them & read over the ch's in the book, you'll do fine. 4 easy assignments that are worth 5% of your grade which helps pull it up. He makes remarks about himself, but he really is a good teacher! Study for the exams!
Slough is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures from powerpoints that come from the book, just bring the book and highlight. Tests are only 50 questions, and he does review sessions (that he records for people who can't go) that basically give you the answers. Online assignments are easy. No hw. Best choice.
Dr. Slough is very laid back and funny. I'm not in the business school, but I took this course as an elective and really enjoyed his teaching.
Loved Dr. Slough!!! His tests aren't that easy but BUY THE BOOK! There's chapter review tear out sheets with vocab and those will become your best friends. He actively engages with the class and will get to know you personally too which is really great. Great teacher! And actually made me want to consider majoring in marketing.
Very clear and concise, lays things out. You have to go to his class. Takes boring topics and makes them somewhat interesting and relatable, gets the whole class involved. Very passionate. Loves to ask trick questions on exams. LOVES true or false questions that are false. Exam questions are not straight forward enough.
By far the most interesting and well rounded professor I've ever had in my college career. He has the class participate in questions and debates and in genuinely interested in what you think and your grade. Take the time to read his updates and the chapters along with some light studying and you'll get an A in this class. A+ would recommend.
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He truly cares about his students and is willing to take time out of his day to meet individually with you. There's a lot of vocab involved in the exams, but you also need to know concepts: READ THE BOOK and ATTEND CLASS. That's one thing I would have done differently to make my life easier in the class. Overall an easier B+ to A
I never went to class and I got a B. Don't know how, but I did it. But don't do what I did. Please go to class and it will be really easy.
Dr. Slough is really a great professor that truly cares about his students and their future. He is down to earth, easily approachable, and makes the class interesting. In MKTG 435 there are a few presentations throughout the semester, make sure you are prepared because he will ask questions and expect you to participate and engage the class.
Slough,is a tough love prof. He will make you go beyond yourself, get involved, network yourself4future job possibilities.very helpful. NO grade curving. If U do the work, study,do extra credit seminar, etc,at beg of class, no other ex cred given. GO2class,polling,?'s about subj going over-where you could get your grade from 88to90 w/participation
He's a very nice man and very passionate, about marketing. His quizzes are a lot of work, don't just go by the study guide, 2 out of 10 questions aren't on the study guide. GO TO CLASS!!! He does polling questions-which also takes attendance.
Slough's marketing class is awesome. He is a nice man, gives lots of examples, interacts with the classroom, and explains everything very well. The tests are a little tricky, make sure you study all of the key terms and you should be fine.
This professor is very out going and there is never a dull moment. The online assignments are easier than they look (go word search!). I find the class easy but that might be because the material is mostly common sense.
Excellent teacher. Very serious about participation. Tests are straightforward and you will ace them if you come to class, pay attention, and do some reading on your own. He really cares about his students.
very nice guy; very helpful
This was the best class I have ever taken, I have never been in a class with a professor like this. He was so genuine and thoughtful towards all his students. I would take his class a million times if I could. The person who rated him negatively clearly doesnt know what they are talking about, take this class... you wont regret it.
Dr. Slough is a great professor. This class is not hard but definitely a lot of in-depth assignments, especially for a 300-level class. If you don't like to work for an A, don't take this class. However, I have learned a lot about selling and would feel completely competent in this field if I got a job selling. Again, Slough is a great professor.
Everyone loves Slough as a person, he is a great guy and is passionate about the subject, but if you are not interested in marketing his lectures are very boring and hard to focus on. He does try to keep students involved throughout the class though. Online assignments are super easy but exams were pretty tough!
I love Professor Slough! Easily the best professor I've had. I'm a marketing major so it was already a subject I'm interested in, but even if I wasn't I'd definitely consider switching because of him. With such a large class he kept students engaged. Read the text, show up on time, and devote your attention to him and you'll do well!
He's a nice guy but, he makes it hard to get an A in this course. Overall he's an okay professor
If you are complaining about Slough, then you didn't try in his class. All you have to do is show up and study some, and you're golden. He gives extra credit on 45 online assignments and gives extra credit on his tests. Also if you're close to the next grade up and go to class, then he will bump you up. I highly recommend taking him.
Awful teacher
Great person. Test are very tough, wants to help you got in every way he can.. To pass read all chapters and power points
Professor Slough is great! He's a great teacher and willing to explain things whenever you need it. Go to class, take notes, and skim the textbook before the tests and you'll succeed. The tests are tough, but you have 4 online assignments to pull your grade up!
Professor Slough is by far my favorite professor so far at VCU, and I do not see the possibility of any future professors changing my opinion. His class is tough but it is a 300 level class so it should be expected. He is engaging during class and a wonderful lecturer. Would take again.
Not a strong teacher... would be better off taking it with someone else or somewhere else.
Wayne Slough starts off the semester as a friendly and helpful teacher, he slowly diminished about half way through... What I mean by that is you can tell he puts on a front of some sort, trying to keep his students from dropping and withdrawing... then kind of fades away. I don't and wont recommend him, save yourself the trouble.
One of my favorite teachers so far at VCU.
WORST professor at VCU... does not work with you and doesn't care about you what you have to say. Save yourself the trouble and take this course with a different professor.
Read the chapters beforehand & take some notes, because he goes through powerpoints so fast in class. Use the online study tools on the website from the book(practice tests, matching, flash cards, etc). His test are basically vocab. Half definitions and half read a situation and select the vocab term. Online assignments are easy. Easy A if you try!
Professor Slough is a great professor. He is very clear with his expectations and his tests are not hard if you read the textbook and pay attention to his lectures. He gives extra credit with almost every test and quiz which is helpful and is very engaged in his teachings! He's overall a really nice person and is very willing to help anyone!!
Prof. Slough is a total salesman and dad. He's such a nice man. He makes the lectures fun and he does small exercises to keep his students interested in the topic at hand. He loves class participation and he'll make you love it too. I used to hate talking in class but I really liked giving my point of view and he always made you feel good about it.
By far one of the best teachers I have ever had. His class is interesting, he teaches the material very well, and it is not a difficult subject to do well in. There is a textbook for the class however you do not need to use it often, posts his power points online as well as study guides for his exams. 50% effort Easy A.
What a waste of my life this class was. I would like to save anyone the pain of taking this garbage class from a garbage professor. The class isn't hard but the professor is unwilling to work with you! He seems to forget the fact that other people have other agendas to tend to. He must assume that we're all trying to manipulate or lie to him. Avoid
Gives you everything you need to do well. If you didn't do well, you didn't read the chapter overviews or go to class. Truly passionate about what he is teaching and a very nice man. Makes an effort to know students' names which is a hard trait to come by. A wonderful, organized, and zealous professor. Would take again.
No homework. Read the book and come to class. At-home quizzes take time but really boost your grade. Tests are not hard if you've read, paid attention in class. Excellent instructor- very engaging.
Slough is the man. Easy A. If you complain about his class, you simply aren't trying.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. His lectures aren't boring and if you go to class, you will definitely pass. No homework is great so if you show up and pay attention there's no way you won't get an A.
Professor Slough is an awesome marketing professor. You can tell he is very passionate about his job! His lectures are all using powerpoint, so be ready to take notes. Make sure you read the chapters in the book as well, his tests are relatively easy if you do. MAKE SURE you participate, he loves when students are engaged. Also gives extra credit
Professor Slough is great! His lectures are always interesting, if you study for the tests they're a breeze and he includes a few online assignments to do instead of going to class. MAKE SURE you have a clicker! That's how he records attendance. Go to class too. You'll miss easy grades he gives if you don't.
Professor Slough is great! His lectures are super interesting and he is hilarious. I would definitely recommend taking his class. If you come to class, read and do all the assignments that is a guaranteed A or B! Love his class!
His tests are literally vocab straight from the back of the book glossary and the answer choices on the tests are so obvious that it is a joke. Easy. But his lectures are pointless and don't help.
LOVE Dr. Slough! If you don't get an A, you're just being lazy. All you need to do is read the end of chapter summaries at the back of the book/ on blackboard! His exams literally come from there. He loves students who go to his office hours, even if you have a good grade. He gives great advice and is very inspirational. Definitely gonna miss him!
This was a great class. If you dont show up to class then just read the textbook and practice online quizzes from the textbook website. All you really have to know is vocab and youll be fine for the tests.
Professor Slough is great just make sure you go to class and study from the Power Points and you'll breeze through the class.
Slough is a great and passionate professor. He is funny in lectures and uses clickers for polling questions so go to class for participation grades. The class is easy if you read the textbook and listen during lecture. No tricks on the tests, very clear cut. A couple of friday's during the semester there's no class and an online assignment.
Slough is probably my favorite professor I've had in college so far. Goes quickly through slides, but he wants you to listen to him more than he wants you to take notes (he'll tell you whats important to write down). Everything you need to get A's on the exams is in the book. Terms and Definitions are everything!!
Professor Slough lectures can get boring over time. All of his tests are hard. You would think all of his tests were vocabulary type tests. All of his tests are 50 questions and all are scenarios with five answer choices. If you have bad test taking skills, stay away. Not enough assignments, just tests.
He was the worst professor I've ever had. He seemed to be very intimidating. He may act nice in front of the class, but meeting him in person he makes you feel stupid. His grading is very questionable. If you are not good at test taking don't take his class and if you're not outgoing please don't either. if you're brown complected don't take him.
AVOID HIS CLASS
Interesting class that was super easy to pass.
There's a few online assignments but if you follow directions they're easy. His tests can be long and difficult but going to the textbook's website and using their practice quizzes helped me more than anything. I found multiple questions from the practice quizzes directly on the tests. He also really cares and offered internships opportunities.
Pretty good professor. Likes to tell stories that relate to the subject matter to better understand. Only way to pass is to read the book and study, he will stress this every week. Nice guy and really friendly. If you read the chapters an understand key terms the tests would be easier. Easy online assignments and one extra credit opportunity.
Easy class, bad professor. There's no other way to put it... avoid this guy and save yourself the hassle.
first business class I ever took so was learning the material for the first time. pretty straight forward. nice guy, interesting
i took 18 credits and this class was one of the easiest. all you have to do is read the chapters in the book before the test and he tells you what won't be on it if you go to class. The students who don't like him are the ones who didn't try. Easy A or B
Professor Slough is a great guy. You could just read the textbook without going to class and still get an A or B. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities as well. Just read the definitions and you'll be fine.
Professor Slough is by far the best professor i've had at VCU. He isn't the type of teacher to teach straight out of the text book; he will have guest speakers and tell plenty of stories that relate to the subject matter. Honestly, you could just read the book for each chapter and pass all his exams with an A. Tip: His tests are vocab. heavy!
Tests are hard unless you know the vocab. you need to read the chapters out of the textbook if u want to pass. his in class lectures are basically him going over the chapter. do yourself a favor and read before attending class. Solid man, i really respect him.
Only take this if you have to. Tests are situational questions based on vocab, but if you just study vocab and main topics you will be fine. Some tests are long, so come early. He promised if you had a border grade at the end and answered all clicker q's then he would raise your grade, but he didn't, so don't bother going to class. Wish I didn't.
Professor Slough is a great teacher. Participation in class is a significant portion of your grade. The textbook is absolutely necessary to read the chapters and know the vocab for his tests.
Easily the worst professor at VCU. Wayne thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread, but in reality is the worst professor at VCU. Classes are boring even though marketing is fun and exciting... its awful. Avoid Slough, he's only going to rip you off at the end of the semester.
AWFUL PROFESSOR
Slough is an energetic and engaging professor. He is passionate about the topics he teaches and does a great job doing it. Highly recommend if you want a class that not only wont ruin your semester and gpa but you will also get a lot out of.
PS is an okay professor but tests are a bit tricky. Going to class is a must but reading the chapters is required to pass. There are 5 quizzes And they are fairly easy. Put in the work and you'll be fine!
Doesnt want to be bothered with questions outside of class.
if you're not a strong test taker, good luck. his tests consist of "all these answers are correct but one is MOST correct" and isn't very helpful during office hours. i would leave more confused than i originally was and he is very condescending towards "stupid" questions. save yourself the stress and pick another prof if you can.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. His test are a mind game where all of the answers are correct, but he picks the one he wants to be right. He acts like he is better than everyone. He is arrogant and loves to mock students. If you see him in office hours, he will speak to you like dirt. Do not take this teacher.
This class can be work but if you're willing to put the effort in you can get an A. PS is a great professor who cares about his students. He's very down to earth, and is flexible when working with students. He tries to make the class engaging. 4 exams, 4 quizzes, and polling questions make your grade. I would recommend PS for this class for sure!
Slough know his stuff! Be prepared to come to class and answer TopHat questions from the readings for participation. If you read the chapters once and look over the powerpoints the night before you should get all As on his test. He also gave us a ton of extra credit opportunities and only like three homework assignments. No excuses for failing this
PS has really great lectures. Always engaging. Loud and gregarious. A wonderful teacher. I learned a lot in this course. His tests are very challenging. All right answers but one is MORE right. Gotten solid Cs on every test. but he provides a lot of extra credit opportunity and online quizzes to help your grade.
Professor is very passionate about marketing but his teaching methods are horrible. His grading is very confusing and he doesn't adjust your grade on black board until the end of class. He makes this class way harder then it needs to be I recommend not taking this course with him.
Professor Slough is great and really cares about his students. Dry humor and long lectures but informative and really good if you're willing to pay attention. The tests pretty much comes straight from the textbook, but you do have to read all of it. TH questions and Quizzes are the rest of your grade. Gotta put in effort but you'll learn A LOT.
Textbook is really important in this class. Some people think Slough is condescending when he teaches but I think he's pretty down to earth. Textbook>lectures for test material, but still show up for top hat questions.
Horrible professor who has the silliest rules for a class that isn't hard material wise, yet the difficulty is enhanced immensely as he puts his own twist on things. Doesn't accept any form of explanation, horribly worded test questions, really just concerned with his check from tophat, extremely arrogant, I can go on.
It's a choose-the-best-answer-according-to-Slough class. He's condescending and wonders why students don't like to participate. Must buy Pearson product AND TopHat is req'd. Wording on tests/quizzes is horrible. EC opportunities available. Read the chapters to understand the content. I suggest taking this course online or with another professor.
Professor Slough was one of my favorite professors. After each exam he would allow you to meet with him and go over the ones you got wrong and would explain why the answer is what it is. He is also very straightforward. I will say his tests could have been better, but they weren't hard. He keeps the class energized and ready for the day.
If you take his marketing 301 class be ready to invest most of your time just to pass his exams. The second exam was extremely difficult and over half of the class got F's. I spent a lot of my time studying for exam 2 and still failed. If you have a choice of professors DO NOT CHOOSE HIM.
He's condescending and makes things unnecessarily difficult. If you ask a question he makes you feel stupid for it.
he is an amazing teacher, this class is very vocab based and his tests are multiple choice and if you do the reading you'll do amazing! he is an amazing lecturer and i really looked forward to going to his class. i got a 70 on the first exam bc i didnt read the textbook and i started to read it and the exams after i got 90+
Condescending and arrogant, Mr. Slough does not make his class a positive environment. He insists on meeting in person during COVID19, patronizes the entire class often for not asking questions, and told us he would make the last two tests a lot harder because we did well on the first one. He is not flexible with grading. Overall a horrible exp.
Took this class asynchronous and would definitely recommend it. This was my easiest class in college so far. 1-2 mini sim assignments a week and I would do multiple at once. Never had to email or talk with him, the due dates are straight forward. This class is very basic marketing concepts and vocab.
Writes the most confusing syllabus on the planet and then talks down to you when there is confusion about about his wording on the syllabus. His online lectures are just a synopsis of the powerpoint provided by the textbook company, not even a synopsis of the textbook itself. Stay as far away from this professor as you can!
Kinda hate this guy honestly. Class avgs on tests are in the 60s and he will blame you for it. Ridiculously vague test/quiz questions and prof has admitted there are multiple correct answers but one "most correct" answer. Frustrating, should be an easy class and is taught much better by other professors. Don't take.
work came from the textbook. it was online asynchronous class and he kept assignments open for 11 hours total. he told us to read the syllabus to know when the assignment could be accessed, the syllabus disagreed with itself. after a week I ignored his lecture completely and just read the textbook. the teacher was the hardest part of the class.
Tests, quizzes and final exams are timed in a way that makes it impossible to actually take time to read the question, and search for the answer. Does not respond to emails in a timely manner, and if he does, makes it sound like you are incompetent.
It's a lot of reading which if done gets you a good grade. He offers 4 exams, 4 quizzes and 2 simulations which will be the main things graded on. Tophat is 12% which can impact your grade if you don't show up or answer correctly. His lectures are great, he brings in a lot of character (anecdotes, current events) beyond just reading powerpoints.
Test questions are very difficult, all of them have the clause, "Pick the most correct answer." There were very few assignments to bring grades up, the main help was in class TopHat quizzing and well same deal with the questions, just this time on a time limit. There is TopHat quizzing throughout the lecture, miss class, lose points.
Professor Slough is my favorite teacher at VCU. Very nice guy who actually cares about his students. Sometimes his lectures feel like a drag but he has great energy when he teaches and you can tell he like his job. We rarely have homework, just an assignment every other week, highly suggest taking him
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE HE WILL NOT HELP YOU AT ALL, INSTEAD HE'LL JUST BLAME YOU FOR TAKING IT ONLINE AND SAY YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS INSTEAD OF HELPING YOU
