explains material well, very helpful, good sense of humor
An excellent teacher. Has wide ranging knowledge of subject and presents topics well. Encourages class discussion as this course is taught similar to a graduate level course. Goes the extra mile to assist students with uderstanding material.
I have taken multiple classes with Prof. Steger and anyone who really wants to learn about the given topic should take him. Lots of reading, very demanding, hard grader, BUT very un-bias in the way he teaches. You can’t tell if he is a lib. or Cons. (whi
He is EXTREMELY smart! He knows his material very well. Will give a lot of reading, but he explains it well. And, you honestly can't tell if he's a liberal or conservative...which is awesome at this school - and that's how it should be!
Very intelligent and knows the subject extensively. Great inside and the classroom and outside as well. Responds to e-mails quickly and always willing to help out. Kept the class interested always. Very challenging.
This is by far the best and my favorite prof yet.Very knowledgeable and his lectures make you want to listen. If you want to do well on his papers just use a lot of what you read from the assigned books.
Steger is the best. Not only soes he make the class interesting, but he is so smart that he is able to express ideas in the clearest way. Not too bad to look at either! STEGER ROCKS!
WOW this guy is awesome. Very smart indeed. But a word of advice read what he assigns and pay atention to the lectures and you will do fine. Also; extremely nice, not judgemental, has statistics that are real, and in general extremely intellegent!
This is by far my favorite professor at DePaul. He is one of the smartest people I know. He is willing to help, genuinely interested in the potential of students, very humorous, and an overall great person. PSC major or not, take a class with him...
Great teacher!! He makes everyone feel like they have a good opinion. Knows what he is talking about. Funny too!
He's pretty good if you are into the stats about political elections and parties. The tests were very difficult. There are two mid terms and a final and there is LOTS of reading. He's nice and funny. Overall a good professor.
He's a great teacher, and he understands that everyone doesnt know everything about politics. I would take another one of his classes even though Poli Sci isnt my major. The is alot of papers though...so beware...
Steger is by far the best professor I've ever had at DePaul and I've been there for over 2 years now. He's very knowledgeable! His classes are a little tough though. Lots of reading and writing, so keep up with the reading and you'll be fine.
Incredible professor. I learned so much!
Excellent professor.
Very intelligent and taught with un-biased lectures (a rairity at DePaul). It was refreshing to learn the + and - about each side. GO TO CLASS and read the assigned readings and you should be fine.
He is very good at keeping an objective front, but you can tell he has some very strongly held opinions! The problem was the syllabus - it was riddled with errors and due dates constantly needed changing, confusing many students and, I’m sure, hurting some grades.
Very passionate in what he does. He's also very knowledgeable in his subject area. The material's you have to read for the class is very dry and not very interesting to read. The lectures were also kind of repetitive. He's very big on attendance and participation so watch out for that. Tough Grader
He is very intelligent and fun in class, but his lectures are a bit scattered and alot of people were never really sure what he expected on papers and tests.
class was easy u pretty much just had to show up.Participation is big with him,but most the time u can BS an answer and do OK.He was a moderately tough grader when it came to papers, but he was always willing to help and give advice. He repeated himself A LOT.We basically learned the same 3 things
He is one of the best professors at DePaul. A very smart man but also very down to earth. He is willing to meet with you anytime you have a question and helps you out a ton with your research proposal. GREAT TEACHER
Cool guy, good lectures. Very tough grader. Reading is terribly boring.
He is defintely passionate about polysci, but sometimes its too much! The reading is way boring and if you are balancing other classes that require more attention, its easy to fall behind. 2 midterms 1 final, thats it... Not worth taking unless this class is focused for your major. Lots of notes!
One of the coolest guys I have ever met and is plainly a genius. He helped create the ACT. His grading is somewhat difficult but he is one of the nicest people I have met. He states everything very clearly and is very funny in class. Take him.
not what i expected after reading other rating- big on attendence, loves to hear himself talk but for good reason, he knows a crap load about politics- tests are hard so study and memorize- lectures unorganized and lots of sidenotes- a lot of reading for exams
If the replicant from Blade Runner had more time, he would've turned out like Wayne Steger. Indeed he is awesome. His political intelligence is impressive but beware high expectations. Expect to be challenged from start to finish. Highly recommend his lectures. Make no mistake very human being.
This guy is pretty cool and definitely knows his stuff about anything political science related. However, if you are not planning on being a political science major, the class is pretty tough and he only gives out about 3 A's in the whole class. So be careful.
Very knowledgeable, gives detailed lectures (although he spends a lot of time on things you dont need to know), and is willing to help outside of class. The readings are boring and the tests are hard so be prepared to work.
Great class. there tends to be alot of information to absorb but you'll be fine. If you do the reading he gives you it will help but if you don't you still won't be lost or anything. he knows his stuff and makes class interesting. Deffinately take him!!!
Good professor, nice guy, but is very difficult. high expectations and he will let you know the first day that he rarely gives A's. I find it discouraging for students. Tests very difficult, written like the ACT. Tough class, work hard. If you dont need this for your major, then i would say dont take it.
Awesome professor. He definitely knows his stuff; extremely knowledgable. Hard class though. There's a lot to learn and take in, but if you do the readings and show up, you should be fine. If you have the chance, take him!
Great lecturer and guy, but his classes are ridiculously hard. Expensive texts, and tests designed for you to get no higher than a C. Beware.
Great lectures. He very approachable and helpful with students. He really knows the subject very well. Grade comes from a paper and a final no midterm. He gives a handout with questions that he picks from to put on the final. If you come to class and participate the class is easy and enjoyable.
For a professor that expects so much from his students and rarely gives A's or even B's, he could at least stay on topic and not go on tangents all the time and end class on time instead of keeping us there while he is babbling away
He is very intelligent and personable, a bit sarcastic in class and very honest. (don't take his honesty personally) VERY high expectations, a lot of reading. Go into this class with prior research. All of the tests/quizzes come from the book...his tests are incredibly hard but the class is worth it. Not an easy A.
This man made this class so difficult. There is A LOT of reading. So be prepared to read pretty much every day of the quarter. The tests are crazy hard. His lectures just go on forever and he doesnt even test on it.U can go to him for help-but he'll just tell u to read better.Yeah that really helps!Trust me-stay away if u can.
Former writer for ACT tests, so the exams are comprehensive and difficult, but this man is one of the most knowledgeable people I know. Has an excellent grasp on current politics and is great to listen and talk to. If you're OK with a challenge and worth putting out the effort to succeed, you'll like his class.
He is a great teacher because he is well prepared. I also had him for PSC 221, 326.
what can i say he is very well informed however it seems that he enjoys hearing himself talk. be sure to do well on the tests because our class had no homework and the final grade was based solely on the mid term and the final. Also, watch out if u are an ed major he has something against us. Basically, he thinks that ed majors have it too easy. The class is passable.
He is a very strict grader but very helpful and very passionate about his work. Awsome prof. Every poli sci major should take at least one of his classes.
This class was very interesting and informative (if you are into American politics). Steger is a great lecturer, BUT he goes way off topic sometimes. He is also a difficult grader.
Knowledgeable professor, extremely hard class. I worked really hard in his course and got a B. So beware.
He is nice but goes off on tangents. He grades fairly on the papers but then grades extremely harshly on the final exam, so what you think you're going to get probable won't be the case. He puts too much weight on participation (doesn't leave you too much room to talk) and common hour.
Great guy. If you do the readings, you will do well. If you don't do them, you will fail. If you want to be challenged and to actually learn something, take this prof. If you are looking for an easy A, look elsewhere.
This professor is GREAT...very challenging, but so knowlegeable about the subject he teaches. It's not an easy class but I still loved it, even though I usually take easy classes...I would take him again anytime
Wayne is one of the best profs in the department! His classes are always fun, challenging and, if you don't already, will make you fall in love with the subject. Highly recommend if you really want to learn something!
Steger made me understand the subject. I'm not a political junkie and I got a really good grade. If you go to class and listen to the lecture and take notes you'll be fine. I never read unless I had to. Studying for his tests are really hard but the test itself was not that bad. Awesome guy!
He does not encourage class discussion. His grading criteria is unclear. He favors certain students
He's a great professor and very knowledgable. He encourages class participation and sometimes randomly calls on people. The tests are not at all easy. His multiple choice is very complex. The class isn't an easy A. It's very hard but interesting. Tough grader.
You don't have to read for the class, but definitely read for the midterm and final: both are sort of difficult, especially the multiple choice. Expect to make inferences and not only memorize, but try to go a step further. Make sure to participate in class now and then. Otherwise, the lectures are really interesting, but he talks a lot.
Steger knows his stuff, and runs a pretty fun class. He can get off topic sometimes, and repeats himself a lot over the course of the class.
Not for slackers. He's a straight up politics junkie and is incredibly knowledgable and engrossing. I had him for Congress. He could be a little pompous sometimes, but he knows enough to get away with it. The class was very much worth, highly recommended. SHOW UP EVERYDAY. I stayed after class frantically writing trying to remember everything often
This class and professor are Awesome! If you give 100%. He will be extremely fair to you. He really knows his stuff. I would recommend him for any class.
Awesome professor!!! He is really helpful with his and other classes. If you need anything you can go to his office and he is more than willing to help. I would tell anyone to take his class, if you don't you are missing one of depaul's best. He is not a really easy grader, but if you go to the lectures and read just a little, you will do fine.
Professor Steger is an incredible professor. He is the reason I declared my major to political science. In order to do well, engaging in discussions is critical and reading the text. The multiple choice and final on his midterms came straight from the text but the essays came from class discussions. Take him!
I worked my butt off for this class and I got a C--my first C in college. He messed up my GPA. His grading is impossible and it is true...he only likes extremely left wing democrats. He picks and chooses students as his favorites. Class discussion isn't required but he makes everyone feel tense. Don't take him for political science. Enough said.
One of, if not the best professor I had in college. Cared about me more than any other professor, saved my butt more than once. The claim that you need to take the left wing position is nonsense, I am a conservative Republican and spoke my mind. He is VERY intelligent, and sees through BS like water, so you have to think and apply yourself.
Prof. Steger is one of my favorite professors at DePaul so far. He's extremely knowledgable on an impressive number of subjects, yet he is easily approachable and very understanding with his students. Perhaps a bit unorganized - but so long as you read the material, speak your mind and put some effort into your papers, expect a good grade!
NOT an easy class, by any means. However, you'll learn a lot, and if you put the right amount of effort into it, it's possible to get an A.
I love this class!!! He knows how to present the material. I enjoyed his fun facts through out the course. He does not take attendace but if you want to do well go to class.Mini research paper + midterm exam + final exam + final paper + participation = Grade.I want to take another class of his.
Lots of reading and writing- 30 pages in one week, for example, but I have learned SO much. Plus, he is such a great professor. He knows his stuff!
If you like a boring lecture this class is for you. Tons of reading and a hard grader. I liked poly sci alot till his 14 page midterm.
Way too much work for a 200 level class. All 3 tests required reading 500 pages from various books and answering very vague questions, yet somehow he wanted very particular answers. Very difficult - avoid.
I love prof. Steger! Disregard the comment below. I had A's all across, and you know what....I barely did any of the readings until I needed to, and I had the older edition of the books. If you listen in class, and do the MOST important readings, and really spend a lot of time on your midterm/final you will be fine.
He sucks!!!
Great teacher, great guy and knows his stuff. He is head of Poli sci for a reason. Although it takes him a long time to grade and his classes are challenging they are worth it. Work hard and you will do well, but be prepared to work!
Very good professor... really have to read the texts and attend class daily. He is very helpful if you need his help. willing to work with you if you ask. He expects a lot because he teaches a lot and there is a load of information in the texts.
Steger is amazing. Loads of info and a lot of personal experience with politics. Great lectures, but expects a lot of participation and he'll randomly call on you so do the reading!! Love that you can see the passion he has for what he teaches. If you want to learn something, I'd highly recommend taking him.
Steger knows what he's talking about. Able to hide his partisanship very well, which makes his opinions a mystery. He has a pretty bad habit of talking over students, which can be frustrating, but stand your ground. You can learn a lot from him. Readings are more of a supplement to the lectures, but he'll call you out sometimes. Would take again.
He is very engaging, you can tell he has infinite knowledge on the subject he is teaching. Very reachable, on many occasions I did not understand the topic and he was always willing to meet before class; as well as giving us study guides. If you are not political science I recommend you take this class, you will definitely learn a lot from it!
Great professor. He gives no homework besides reading. His grades are based on 2 mid terms and 1 final, and one partisanship paper. If you don't actively participate and pay attention and read don't expect an A.
Reading is essential to passing the class, and there is a ton of it. Be prepared for him to call on you even if you were not willing to participate. Heard other teachers were easier than him so if you can, choose them. Very nice man though.
Ok not that bad
Phenomenal teacher. Awesome dude. Care about students. Approachable. Not exactly easy, and 2 papers make or break your grade. But, you'll learn more about politics and elections in one quarter than you would over a year with other teachers. If you ask a question he'll explain the answer really in depth. Lectures are usually tied to current events.
Biggest down side to Steger is that he's a big mansplainer and rambler. Ask a simple question and he'll go off on a huge tangent. He knows his stuff though and is willing to help you get your best grade possible. If you like the type of class where you can just kick back and listen for an hour and a half, this is a good one for you.
Good class if you don't want to go to class. Lots of readings and powerpoint notes but if you study them well and take good notes, you could easily skip a class a week and get an A. Didn't take attendance. Likes to ramble in lectures. Gets most of his exam questions from the book readings.
He is decent but his lectures lack substance and is not thorough enough when you ask Mr. Steger questions. I wish he would teach more instead of indoctrinate students.
Only 2 response papers and a final paper for the whole quarter. Since it was a 2 credit class, in class time determined most of my grade.
Prof Steger did a very good job explaining what the readings could not. He is also one of the most fair and unbiased teachers I've had at DePaul. He can give a lecture on one topic for close to 40 minutes, but they are very informative. He answers any questions you might have. We had 3 papers on 4 books and some D2L readings. I recommend him!
Lots of reading (4 books) with 4-5 papers on the readings. I am not that iinterested in the topic, but lectures were interesting at times and you learn a lot. He can talk for hours about this stuff and knows a ton. Read the books, take notes in class, and it won't be the worst. Compared to other honors courses, he grades easier. no midterm or final
Prof. Steger is really passionate about his subject but there aren't many assignments just about three essays throughout the quarter and then a final and a midterm. Lectures are very content heavy so if you miss a day you miss a lot. I learned a lot from him and hope to take him again!
Dr. Steger is clearly passionate about the classes he teaches- if you listen to the lectures, invest yourself in the topic, and put in effort on the papers you will be fine. Honestly, he is one of my favorite professors and this was my favorite class at DePaul so far. Not easy, but totally fun and doesn't feel like work.
Wayne Steger is hands down the best professor I've ever had! In the first half of class, you don't really have any assignments except for weekly readings and for the second half, you have to analyze and critique readings in a short essay (2-5 pages). Show up to class, be ready to participate, go to office hours, and read!
Prof Steger is a "hard" professor in that if you don't work very hard you'll probably fail. The reading isn't bad and if you like politics they're interesting and he knows his stuff. If you want to learn a lot take him, if these kinds of profs scare you keep moving.
Steger was a great professor. I found his feedback on papers to be some of the best I have received in college. He does not use powerpoints often. He kind of just talks at you (which I like). However, it can be hard to follow at times. He taught the only American politics class I took in my degree and I learned a lot.
Prof Steger is extremely knowledgeable about a lot and wants you to ask questions. Get comfortable with reading graphs bc he uses a ton in his powerpoints. Cracks jokes and cusses. Partcipate or else hell ramble or put you on the spot, especially if he knows you. Papers are easy if you pay attention in class.
Professor Steger is such a great professor but wow did his PSC200 class kick my ass. He definitely wants you to work and put in the effort for a good grade so if you're looking for a class to slack off on this is not the class for you. He is great with working with you outside of class and will help you achieve a good grade if you put in the effort
VERY TOUGH GRADER! DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you already know about this topic. I took this because I thought it would be interesting but no it was just random students talking about what they feel like and then the professor going on tangents about that. We had and exam week 9 then a final paper due One week later. My advice do not take this class.
Professor Steger is a very knowledgeable man and will give great lectures. But, these lectures can get out of control and spiral into conversations about things that do not matter. He is an insanely hard grader and looks for the most specific answers or else points are docked. You MUST do all class readings to pass exams. Good luck.
Steger is very educated in his field. However, he regularly lets the class go on tangents, which wastes class time and forces us to rush through material before exams. Very hard grader. You will definitely need to read everything to pass, but if youre into poli sci its interesting stuff. Personally I wouldnt take him again even though I did well
So I had Prof Steger twice. Once online, once in-person. I find him to be an interesting man with extensive knowledge in the psc world. However, he does not give timely feedback and his grading is pretty subjective. Only three grades (which were graded harshly w/o a clear rubric), which everyone collectively complained about. but he is a nice guy
Professor Steger is, in my opinion, one of the best professors at DePaul. He is strict in his grading, that is true. But he is also very invested in the success of his students. He will take the time to go into detail about anything you do not understand. By far one of my favorite professors. If you enjoy a challenge, and learning, take his class.
Congress/Legislature is so much better than his Presidency class. Be engaged in class. Read. It is interesting.
Dr. Steger's American Presidency was great. He lectures in class but sometimes will waver from his lecture based on questions. Make sure to read for class as it is vital for getting good grades exam and understanding the lectures. If you participate in class and do some reading, you will be fine. Also definitely go to office hours they're so chill.
Professor Steger is interesting and not a boring lecture. Few papers but they hold all the weight so read the readings and you'll probably be okay. If not a political science major, GOOD LUCK cause our major is admittedly boring and tedious. He's a fair grader and can go on tangents but it's typically related to course material.
Professor Steger is likable and fair. He is extremely lecture-heavy so it can become a tad bit boring if the material doesn't interest you. 3 overall exams but each exam becomes more redundant as it goes on. Allowed Zoom students so that was cool, I appreciate it. A 9:40 is hard to get up for, especially for the lectures considering.
At first, I liked professor Steger but as time went out, it seemed like he would just ramble and go on. None of the information he taught felt necessary. The class is kind of boring at the end. Also, your only grades are papers but have no rubric. How was I suppose to know the specifics of what you were asking for if you don't tell me? Skip him.
You get out of Steger's class what you put into it. You can get by doing minimal readings and not participating if you're just going for the credit, but it does seem like for students who are genuinely interested in the material, Steger's lectures can be interactive and engaging. Quite a few papers, but not too harsh a grader.
His lectures are frequently hard to follow but he is very knowledgeable about the subject. I wouldnt recommend for people who arent political science majors. The class is helpful and he gives a lot of relative examples but the lectures can be redundant. There are only four papers that make your grade and the grading criteria can be unclear.
This class is not for the faint of heart, but for anyone majoring in experiment-based social sciences, I heavily recommend this course. However, you will never read more in any other class, and there are a total of 16 pages of papers to write, as well as a rather difficult midterm. Participation and preparation will carry you far, and he is lenient
Professor Steger is alright. He talks the whole class and doesn't give much room for discussions or questions. He assigns too much reading, is a very tough grader, and doesn't make it clear when he is curving the exams or not. He is passionate about his work and I enjoyed the topic of his class, he is just a bit too extreme.
He was definitely knowledgable on the topic but sometimes explained things by going around in circles before fully answering certain questions. Very lecture heavy and quite a lot of reading, but mainly only in the first few weeks of the quarter. Expect to participate quite a bit. Overall, he's a nice person and grades fairly.
PSC200 with Professor Steger is a challenge, but engaging with the material pays off. Attend class, participate, and use resources like unstuck study to excel. The workload is high, but it's worth it to learn from this knowledgeable prof.
