He talks too fast, and is a little dull. I hope things get more exciting.
This teacher is making me question my own reality.
talks really fast andit is hard to take notes. If you want a good grade you have to read.
great teacher
i took his class fall semester 05. hard to keep up for taking notes. I /was/ very interested in philosophy BEFORE I took this class. After taking this class I'm now not as interested. Maybe if I find another instructor the fire will reignite.
Good class good instructor! would recomend this instructor!
Very hard vocablury, super fast, hard to keep up with the notes and very strict for his term paper...the paper really drais you out. Not really helpful.
He's hard to gauge. Not to sure what he wants as far as answers. He's arrogant and makes it known that he's right and you're not.
This class is definitely not easy and requires a lot of work. But yuen is a great professor. I learned a lot in his class. He made philosophy interesting. I recommend anyone to take it.
If u EVER miss one of his class meets, u're probably stuck with a B on the test. Every single class meet is super important and be sure u take all the notes, not just the ones on the board too!! write down every single thing that he says, because u're gonnna need alll of it on the exam. really hard to do well on tests b/c u dont know what he wants.
Do not take this teacher. when you ask him questions, he will make you look stupid. he thinks he is right all the time. He is arrogant and no one seems to like the way he teach. i got an A in his class but study alot and i have no life. my major was pholosophy but after this class i have no interest in philosophy much anymore.
Good lectures, but at first he is a bit arrogant. He's young, so I think he does it to aviod being taken advantage of. He'll argue about useless stuff sometimes, but his class was interesting. Not hard to get an A. Just 3 tests, a paper, and some case studies (7 total).
It's strongly advised that you attend every single class because he does lecture a lot. Tests will be really challenging if you don't read the book or take good notes. Otherwise class is pretty easy. But you have to earn your A, so don't take his class if you are lazy and don't like to read!
He covers a lot of info quickly and his study guide covers all the questions on the test, which makes studying really easy. He goes over all the questions and tells you the correct answer and how to answer it. Easy class and tests to pass.
Do not take his courses. He does not like to be proven wrong and gives terrible explanations for the correct answers on the quiz.only good thing about this class is that all you need to pass are the exams and a paper.Again,he does not like to be proven wrong,if you are correct and he's wrong he will give you any excuse to tell you you are incorrect
His class is not that bad, he does get off topic alot though. Class is not mandatory and if you have a friend in the class you can just borrow notes. The study guides he hands out are very helpful for the tests. You do not need to buy the text book, if you have all of the notes you will never need the book. This class is not hard and I would recc
Attendance isnt mandatory but i think he grades more favorably to students hes sees regularly. Kinda dorky. Test are kinda hard. Dont really need the book if u go to class. Case studies are cool but grading is lame. Lectures are interesting enough to attend. Overall hes a "B".
he never took role once, so you probably wont find out if you're in the right class or not until midterm day if you're really very dumb. only 2 midterms, final, & 1paper. that's it. you don't have to say a word the whole semester. he showed a few movies which was cool. he can get really depressed, but covers it up badly. he's a cute kind of dorky.
waynes a funny funny FUNNY dude. super down to earth.. till u start talking ethics. its not that he doesnt like to get proven wrong its just hes so educated and well spoken good luck in proven him wrong.. his test are semi tough, unless you read (books really interesting) and the topics you discuss are like no other. i reccomend him to the fullest
The most interesting and helpful class I've taken at Ohlone. Prof Yuen is a friendly guy who really knows his stuff and wants everyone to learn. This class is about engaging and controversial issues such as abortion, euthanasia, vegetarianism, etc. This class teaches you how to think in everyday life and makes you feel smart. I highly recommend.
Wayne is really good at what he does. Really gets you to think critically about everything that you do. I can honestly say that I view the world much differently after taking this class. I highly recommend taking any class that he teaches. He is simply the best at Ohlone.
Wayne's awesome! He is really reall smart and explains things very well. Someone asked a question and he asked her to come up in front and demonstrated how in front of everyone! Okay that sounds kind of wrong, but he is a very passionate professor who will do anything to make sure his students understand the subject material. Plus he's hillarious!!
omg this guy is pretty cool. and p.s if you just wanna take this class for a easy A, think again. this class is hard. but if your interest in the subject and you do your homework and all the assignments your good to go. im telling you this guy is a nerd. he know everything about phil. good luck. stronly recom. you take this with him =]
Grades easy on research paper. Tests are all short response questions. Usually curves test. Easy to get an A in this class if u take notes & pay attention to lectures. goes over review sheet for test & is practically the whole test. gives extra credit. dont really have to read if u go to class. grade consists of 2tests 1paper 1final.
I recommend recording all his lectures or at least especially on review days. He talks fast so it may be difficult to keep up. Tests are easy if you take good notes. Lets you know exactly what he wants on the test when he answers all the questions on review sheet. Youre screwed if you miss a class day bc lectures are important
He is a very excited teacher who loves what he is teaching. It's simple take notes in class and study and you will pass the tests. Start the paper early like he says do not procrastinate it is harder than you think.
Yuen knows what he's talking about and makes class interesting. Every now and then he gets really excited about something or says something totally awkward, which made class fun. Learned a lot in this class. While taking this, I was actually able to apply the ethical concepts we learned about to everyday situations, which was cool.
This guy rocks. Take him if really want to learn. Cons; he stutters like crazy and is unclear a lot of times. He takes things into a lot of detail though if you ask. Grades are basically 2 exams, one paper, and the final (all 25% each). So pull yourself through these and its not hard to get a good grade. Cool guy, but has an odd personality.
Wayne is very educated, enthusiastic, and funny. I learned a lot in his class and enjoyed it as well. He doesn't drown students in work; his concern is to make sure they learn and understand the material. Definitely reccomended!
first of all, I don't even like philosophy but after i took Wayne's class, i liked it alot. He's hilarious and he definetly knows what he's talking about. DON'T BUY THE BOOK! you might as well flush $100 down the toilet. i passed with an A and i didn't read it once. All you have to do is take all the notes, even what he says and you'll pass.
Good Instructor, Check out the Hair!
Wayne is one of the best teachers at Ohlone. His class is interesting and really funny...you will learn a lot. Attendance is a must...the tests come straight from lectures. If you pay attention, it won't be hard to get an A. There is one essay...don't procrastinate! It's worth 1/4 of your grade. I highly recommend his classes phil 106 and 102.
The best classroom experience I've ever had. I am making no exaggerations when I say that this class changed my life. With the way that Wayne explained things and was always willing to answer my questions even if they were off-topic, he helped re-evaluate my views on morality and from there I came to reject all religion for lack of reasoning.
Took him for ethics. Interesting class. He's funny and quirky which makes learning ethics easier. Don't need the txtbook but you should take lots of notes. Gives a study guide before test and you can ask him questions and he'll answer. Tests are straight forward. If you go to class and take notes, you should get a good grade.
Great teacher, makes learning philosophy very fun. He is very quirky and delivers lectures clearly. Textbook and class attendance is crucial as tests take material from both.
not a good teacher.
i've taken him for PHIL100 & 106, great teacher. attendance isn't mandatory but it helps. he gives you any answers you need for the study guide. i've actually been able to apply concepts i learned in his classes to life. tells a lot of weird stories and talks about cats, doritos, LOST, and having sex with his wife a lot.
nice, funny, clear, quirky, helpful. definitely reccomended! :)
I really like this class, he's really eccentric and entertaining. He makes it so the thick material is also easier to comprehend with anecdotal stories and examples. My only complaint would be he says "Umm" a lot, but that's a personal pet peeve of mine.
He will grade significantly harder when you write about something he is opposed to. So if you are anything but an extreme liberal hippie, then don't take him.
Was thoroughly entertaining. Most lectures were very engaging, however it did drag on a couple or few of times. Just make sure you attend class and review your notes. The bulk of his exams are on his notes. He can be a bit over the top when it comes to jokes, but he keeps you into the lecture. P.S. has a big thang for Nicole Kidman yall
Took his ancient philosophy class. Lecture based class, but his lectures are very clear, engaging, and super helpful. Tests are mainly short- and long-response based, but if you take good notes and listen to his lectures (which are really interesting), you should do well. Would definitely take his classes in the future!
He wasn't the type that knew everybody's name, but that's fine because I don't often raise my hand in class and really dislike professors who force participation. He makes everything accessible and entertaining. If you do the readings, attend lecture, and ask questions when necessary you should do fine. He's also friendly and very open to all views
I don't know if maybe he was having an off semester but I don't see why he got so many positive reviews on here. I found him to be arrogant and rude. He would only give me short answers whenever I talked to him with minimal eye contact. It definitely seemed like he had his favorites so if you don't fall into that group, good luck!
His class is SUPER interesting, and he is hilarious. Even though attendance is not mandatory but listening to his lectures are more effective than reading the book. HIS LECTURES ARE CRYSTAL CLEAR. But he grades really hard on the term paper and tests. This is a class where you will learn but it takes effort to get an A.
He's a really great teacher, provided you put in the effort for the class. His lectures are thoroughly engaging, and he's the type of guy who'll help you out with your paper after class if you ask, or who will explain things to you on his own free time. A little moody occasionally, but he's one of the teachers at ohloen that you have to have.
He's weird, likes to talk about cats and impregnating his wife, but you get used to it...and it's kind of entertaining. He's a great teacher and is very clear is explaining concepts. Great teacher and would recommend taking his course.
He is ridiculous. When I poked logical flaws in his explanations he would simply side-step the question and end discussion. Class is easy tho, I put in the minimal amt of effort to receive an A and got it. I ditched class 6 times, never opened the book. I just took notes and went to review sess. His paper is easy, 8 pgs. Do your research.
Very... interesting professor. Likes to use very vivid examples to teach the material. Class itself is very straightforward. Attendance, research papers, mid-term and final and you should get an A.
Practical reasoning is not easy, you'll see a lot of confused faces in this class. But Prof Yuen is, seriously, an awesome teacher. Do your assigned readings, START YOUR RESEARCH PAPER EARLY, and take good notes in class. I got an A. (He also offers extra credit!)
READ the assignments. HE will make you do classwork. The last few chapters are HARD. DO your research paper EARLY and you can get a chance(s) to redo it for a better grade. As many times as you want until due date.7 FULL pages FOllOW Directions. VERY IMPORTANT!!! And he offers extra credit.
This teacher is awful. If you choose a topic for your paper and he disagrees with your opinion he will mark you down. He hands you a paper that expains about 50 things he doesnt want in your paper or you will get marked down. He grades hard on tests
Wayne is Awesome. He is great at explaining things for ESL students and really fun to argue with. For those students that say he "disagrees with their opinion and marks them down" He is just encouraging a stronger argument. If your argument is valid, then objections should be hard to come by. Sorry to burst your bubbles, but this is an ethics class
Class started out with 54 students. 31 people dropped the class. This teacher is weird. He has a thing for nicole kidman and is a bit on the femine side. Like previous people have said he is a tough grader. The paper reqirement is pretty ridiculous. Most of the things he will mark you down for and English teacher wouldnt do
He's a good professor. His tests aren't actually all that bad; just be sure to take notes & read the essay in the book and you should be fine. Just study! What screwed me over was the paper... so it'd be a good idea to do your paper early and turn it in a month early so he can get over it as he is a very tough grader. overall he's good though!!
Funny guy, not afraid to make a fool out of himself in front of 50+ people. Lecture attendance is a MUST. Sometimes the textbook is too confusing for me, so lecture notes really help. 3 exams + a 7 pg research paper. Don't do the paper the night before, 7 pages is realllly hard to fill.. :(
Prof. Yuen is the best! He makes a difficult subject accessible and interesting. As long as you go to class, take good notes, and study (oh, and start your research paper early!), you'll do fine. 3 exams + 1 research paper. He even offers extra credit, but I didn't need it. You should definitely take his class.
He is a very tough grader. Never take his Practical Reasoning class. It's insane. No bueno.
This is definitely a UC & CSU level class. Yuen is a great professor and knows a substantial amount of information when it comes to Philosophy, you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. He knows exactly what he is talking about.
PHILOSOPHY IS HARD PERIOD. There is only 4 grades in his class so each grade is worth 25% of your grade. Dont mess up basically. :/ I dont think this is fair to the students because in fact most students dont test well. Just do your research paper ahead of time PLEASE! I ensure you that you will learn lots, but there is so much to know.
All philosophy classes are very interesting, but also tuff or Hard. Prof. Yuen is a good teacher, but needs to understand that students dont think like teachers expecially in a subject that is hard to understand. Im a smart girl mainly an A student, and truly am having a hard time in this class. Just giving everyone an FYI :)
Would recommend Yuen highly. Lectures int. but topic is complex. He is a great teacher, but make sure you read, study and do well on paper. He lectures direct from textbook, so you can skip a lecture or skip buying the book.
Hands down one of the best classes EVER!He's such an amazing teacher. Yeah it's hard but he's more than happy to help you any time. You NEED to pay attention in class because he explains things so well compared to the book. Go to class and review the lecture from the book. TAKE THIS CLASS! Hella funny guy. If I could take it over again I would!!
Great teacher, super helpful. Very clear and knows what he is teaching. Take advantage of office hours when doing your argumentative paper. Super funny guy. Attendance is mandatory only in the sense that if you don't show you'll fall behind.
Difficult subject but fantastic professor. He's hilarious and will help you learn Ethics. Read the chapters before you go to class, take notes, do your research paper, and the tests should be a breeze for you. The only time I stressed over this class was when I started my research paper a week before the due date. Fun class, learned a lot.
pretty hard class but it's an interesting one. He doesn't give out homework but the the research paper and exam are worth alot. But you'll never get bored in his class.
Beliefs aside, his lectures keeps your interest of the topic. Since there isn't much work in this class, its hard to boost your grade; only 4 opportunities (3exams and a paper).START YOUR ESSAY EARLY! EMAIL HIM WITH QUESTIONS! Draw back is the argumentative paper. No english class has ever taught this to me, not even any college english course.
He was awesome, you have to stay on top of your work and study. Not much homework, if any at all. Pay attention and the class isn't hard at allll.
Wayne is a great teacher, I had him for Ancient philosophy, and decided to change my major to philosophy the second week meeting. He uses the book, but mainly explains things in class. His tests are failry difficult. usualy 20-30 multiple choice questions, and 12-15 short answer questions. He gives out study guides for the test and goes over them.
Super clear, super funny, super cool.
He is one of the harder teachers at Ohlone, no doubt about it, but he's a nice teacher and he explains the information well. Some students can get good grades by reading the notes alone. I'm not one of them. The notes are informative, but to get a real understanding you need to read the book. You really need to study for this class, but it's cool.
he was a pretty good teacher, good lectures
Awesome professor, not gonna lie, hard subject matter. Come to class, his lectures are the only way you will understand the topics. Never used the text, not once. He even told us the first day we didn't need to buy it. Take notes! And be ready for the 7 page research paper at the end. Don't wait til the last minute, your grade will reflect it!
Who wants to hear a professor talk about his cats 24/7? This guy is strange. He goes around in circles, and it's hard for people to try to grasp what he's trying to say. Most of the people in my class dropped him because he's such a bad professor. He shows a lot of favoritism too, and if you're not into what he's into, he'll try to belittle you.
Take this class if you're willing to put in the time to study. 3 exams and a paper. No homework at all! Very enjoyable, easy class.
4 assignments total for the whole class, 2 tests, 1 five page paper and the final. He emails the class lecture notes, so you don't necessarily have to go. I never bought the book and passed with a B. Because its 4 assignments, if you do bad on one, you have to do great on the others. Attend the classes when he reviews the tests and you'll pass.
He's funny, nice, and a good lecturer. The tests are tough, I would recommend going over every single thing he discusses in lecture as well as in the readings. He does give a good amount of extra credit at the end, and wants you to succeed. SERIOUSLY- Start the research paper after the very first day of class & keep turning it in until you get an A
Awesome teacher. He's super funny and always keeps the class interested. Not a lot of assignments. Only 3 tests and 1 paper, but they aren't easy. He's a great teacher and I would definitely take his class again.
Your grade 3 tests (or was it 4?) + paper Start the paper as soon as he assigns it, so you can turn it in repeatedly until you get an A. He emails lecture notes so you don't HAVE to go to class (but obviously you'll understand better if you do). Definitely, definitely, definitely go to class the days he reviews for the upcoming test. Funny guy.
Yuen was an amazing professor. Intriguing lectures that really got me to doubt everything that I morally believed. A few exams that are straight from the lectures. Occasional graded class group discussions, but they lessen towards the end of the semester.
Prof. Yuen's classes are very interesting. He makes you question and critically think about a lot of things that go on in the world, so it does get very deep. The homework is straightforward, but the essays are intense. This might be hard if you are not a philosophy major and just taking his class as an elective, but it was still enjoyable.
Smokin' hot! Seriously, this guy is a model! Even if you don't like philosophy, take the class to see his beautiful face, I'm talking the Asian Bradley Cooper here. He teaches pretty well too.
He's got a good heart and wants students to succeed. However, if you're only taking this class as an elective to fill up your IGETC - BIG MISTAKE. You'll have to work incredibly hard just for a B. Take an easier elective with a professor who gives easier tests. Unless your a philosophy major, avoid it. It's near impossible to get an A.
Yuen is a great prof. He is thoughtful and shows reasonings behind the logic of each argument. His lectures are straight to the point, yet highlight the nuances of philosophy (he's also really funny). The tests are difficult, but showing up to lecture and participating offsets this. He offers a good sum of extra credit to help students.
Maybe it was just me, but Professor Yuen wasn't easy or clear to me. He looked down most of the times during his lecture and the lectures are confusing. I failed his PHIL101, retook it with Van Vleet and got an A+. If you need to take a philosophy class, I recommend taking Van Vleet instead; I loved his classes.
OKAY.... I just Dropped from Phil-106 Fall '15!! :/ He is not as easy and some may say. I met with the tutor, studied for test, and did the Hw and still not good enough. Maybe it was me, but If I managed to put that much time in to a class, I would at least expect something better. Anyways, It's your choice of course, but I wouldn't take him.
Lectures are long so be prepared to take a lot of notes. 3 tests and 1 essay are the only things that decide your grade in the class, no homework. Its not as hard as people say it is, he gives you a lot of chances for extra credit and even lets you bring a 3x5 card cheat sheet for tests. Really interesting class. Grade how much effort you put in
He was an awesome teacher, as he clearly knows philosophy well. Take good notes, ask questions, and go to class. He's a very clear teacher and is very helpful in explaining difficult concepts.
One of my favorite professors ever, extremely kind and really cares for his students although he plays it off. Definitely show up to his lecture, they're really interesting! He posts his notes online but to understand you really should go to class. Subject is kind of difficult, but if you have any questions he is extremely helpful!
Only take this class if your major specifically requires it to transfer, otherwise there are much easier classes at Ohlone that you can take where you don't have to study for hours to scrape by with a B. Definitely a nice person though.
Oh goodness, honestly this man is hilarious and the biggest nerd I've ever met. Some of the material is really hard, but he tries his best to make his students understand it. He WANTS you to understand it. So, do not hesitate to ask him questions.
He's a really funny professor, I'd definitely take his class again and I'd recommend to take him. He posts his notes online, which helps, because sometimes he can go fast. I'd recommend not skipping class because he does a good job explaining, and if you don't quite understand something, he's happy to explain it another way :D
Wayne is a great professor! He definitely knows his stuff and his lectures are really helpful. No homework, just one term paper, one midterm, and one final. The subject itself is tough but he does his very best to help you understand! He's a really chill guy. Take him without hesitation.
This was a GE required class option for me. Professor Yuen is really entertaining in a lecture based class. 3 exams including the final and 1 midterm paper. Nothing too crazy. It is an intro class so expect to learn a little bit about a lot of philosophers. Would recommend his class.
This class is not hard if you actually try. His exams are straightforward, and he will explain anything in greater detail if you ask him to during lectures. Uses a lot of pop culture references when teaching (we had a whole lecture based on Terminator 2). Has a good sense of humor. Don't buy the textbook, I didn't open it once and still got an A.
Took his Phil 100 class on my first semester and read up like crazy but really all you have to do is listen to his lectures and take good notes. Super easy A if you pay attention and put in the work. Two papers and tests are usually full of short-essay sections.
hardest class I ever taken here I regret taking this course. I've met with a tutor and still struggling go to class everyday never missed a lecture. Done all the homework and classwork. If its a credit class for critical thinking golden four please take my advice take something else. I'm so sad because I might not pass and I'm trying so hard.
One of my favorite professors ever! His lectures are hilarious and cover all the material. I genuinely did not pick up the book once during the semester and got an easy A because of his lectures. Philosophy easily becomes boring if taught by the wrong person, but sometimes I almost wanted class to be longer because of how great he was.
It has taken me a while to come to this realization, but looking back at the notes he left on my exams and the lacking of feedback for my essay, it is plain to see that he is really not a good professor at all. If this course is required for your major, wait for another teacher to come around, or find an equivalent course at another school.
Professor Wayne has got to be the BEST teacher I ever had in Ohlone. I am a business major and thanks to him I am minoring in Philosophy. He taught the class really well and was truly disappointed when the class ended. He is super knowledgeable about the class so ALWAYS ALWAYS ask questions!
I took his philosophy class, not the best teacher at all. About 3 exams and a paper. Exams were 3 or more pages long all handwritten and the grading was a bit harsh. This dude does not teach any easy A classes, read the book, go to class, participate in discussion with the tutor he provides, and you might get a C.
Professor Yuen is one class where you think it'll be easy but you have to really pay attention and study in order to get a good grade. He does not give homework or assignments, just 1 paper, and the regular exams along with extra credit, so make sure to study very hard and pass the exams. He is a good teacher but lectures can get boring.
Took him for modern philosophy online. If you do the work you'll do fine. If you put in extra effort he gives extra credit! In addition to the weekly readings, he posts his own very extensive lecture notes which are very fun and easy to read. Overall I would highly recommend. Tests are also very fair and are based on a study guide. I learned a lot.
He's honestly really funny, but it's the hardest class ever. Three exams and a paper, each worth 25%. Mess up on one and you have to really haul to raise your grade. Teaches you how to study. But here's how to get an A: turn in a rough draft of your research essay so he can give you feedback. Don't be shy on review days. Write a LOT on your exams.
Great professor overall. Lecture heavy, test heavy with a 3x5 note card, one written assignment worth a large percentage, extra credit opportunities, participation matters, ask questions, ask for help, read the book to understand the material better, the study questions and discussion questions help a lot. Not an easy A! Mentally rewarding!
This was such an enjoyable class! Wayne is very personable and entertaining, yet informative and helpful. I was kinda scared for the exams and the paper, but just pay attention to the lectures, do the reading, and definitely ask questions when confused and you should be fine! He let us use a 3x5 notecard for the exams, which was really helpful! :)
He is not clear with his assignment instructions, leaves students thinking if they even did it right, posts a lot of assignments with short instructions but makes you write way too much for it when you can even anymore. Then docks off many points
Really enlightening class. There's weekly book readings plus his lecture notes which really clarify some hard concepts, but it's a lot to read. 3 exams and 1 paper each worth 20%; the other 20% comes from weekly quizzes and dicussions. Exams were straightforward and he provides a study guide; if you write a lot on them he will give extra credit.
I've taken 101 and 106 with Yuen, I loved both classes. Philosophy is my favorite subject I've learned in my two years now. I honestly never read the textbook, his lectures are pretty informative, but I would recommend reading the book for other students. Pretty easy class, super informative and really makes you think about things deeply.
Wayne Yuen is a great teacher, he is so clear when he explains things, and he gives extra credit opportunities if you provide more information than the questions in the exam require. I took 3 of his classes and he is so helpful at guiding his students into doing well in the class. I definitely recommend him!
Professor Yuen's lectures are genuinely really fun to read! I came in with no expectations, and I'm leaving saying philosophy became my fav subject! The class is asynchronous, so you get to take it at your own pace for the most part- just get your weekly tasks done. Lots of extra credit opportunities provided if you show that you know your stuff!
I entered PHIL-100 knowing nothing about philosophy, but I've learned a lot! I took the asynchronous class, so every week had reading, quiz, and discussion participation. There are 3 exams and 1 paper for the semester. Pretty challenging assignments but there are extra credit chances. Gives lots of feedback and very approachable!
The class started off really bad for me. Just make sure to do the reading very thoroughly and take notes to remember what you read. There is a lot of extra credit.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He gives the most RUDE comments on discussions. He doesn't act like a professional. He comments things like, "Really???", "seems like you don't understand anything in this lecture"... He doesn't give ANY points in a discussion if you forget to respond to a classmate. He calls himself "philosophile".weird
I learned ALOT in this class, not just about philosophy, but his case studies are very rich in facts about different topics and he challenges you to really dig deep into different philosophical theories and apply it to real world events. He can be intimidating at first, but if you talk to him and show your interest, he is very supportive.
Prof Yuen's class was pretty interesting. I knew nothing about philosophy and now I know a lot of the basics of this topic. He gives a lot of reading and EC, weekly quizzes, weekly discussion posts, 3 exams, and 1 paper. Just don't skimp on the reading if you take this class because it will reflect on your quiz grade.
I had no background in philosophy and learned a lot from this class. There's a lot of reading from the textbook and the professor's lectures, which are pretty fun to read. Some concepts can be a little difficult to understand so, be ready to spend some time on the material. Weekly discussions were pretty interesting and sometimes difficult.
This guy thinks hes like a graduate school level professor. He gives you zero points if you miss anything. He gives 3 assignments within the first 2 days of class. His comments are not constructive but very sarcastic sounding. Like cmon dude I feel sorry for him if this is what he does for entertainment
From my experiences with Professor Wayne, this class has generated more utilities than disutilities because Professor Wayne was a person who really cared about me and wanted me to succeed in this class by explaining different concepts from his valuable lectures. Take him people.
Beware of the Quiz only one attempt and Discussion post , Beware of Exam and study guide doesn't help at all. Even its online class but carefull with exam and quiz. Honestly I would take someone else.
He leaves the worst comments on your discussion, like he doesn't even try to hide the fact that he's being rude. If you have a differing opinion, prepare to be made fun of. The exams are timed so you don't even have time to do the extra credit questions at the end. Worst Professor I have ever had, so unprofessional and condescending.
Maybe right for you, maybe not. "Lectures" were all written. You have to read from the textbook. Sometimes articles too. Takes more time than it should. Beware of exams, there are 3 and if you think you did good, no you didn't. Grading is unreasonable. I get how one may enjoy his class, if one likes to read. But that's just not a good way to learn.
He is extremely racist and self-centered. The class was about philosophy and all he wanted us to do was paraphrase his modules. I had a good grade the whole semester and out of nowhere he just gave me a zero and asked if my work was AI-generated (which it wasn't). Then when I wanted to talk to him regarding the assignment he never opened my emails
BAD, Comments are not constructive, no feedback at all, he's always right and you're always wrong, false cheating accusations to me and apparently others too, narcissistic, condescending, unprofessional, disrespectful comments- especially when it's your opinion, belittles you for it, passing with facts is impossible, only his voice matters to him.
He had weekly lecture modules with quizzes and responses to discussions due every Sunday. You can retake his quizzes if you get less than a 4/7, and discuss your quiz with him to earn a 7/7 but make sure to review the material before you discuss what you got wrong with him. Write in detail abt. each philosopher on the 3 exams + 1 paper to do well.
Can rant about smt completely off topic frequently. Very charismatic person, his lectures feel like a performance somtimes. Never had hw in this class which was awesome. First test is rough, youll do better on the next 2. Loads of extra credit. Paper is light if you manage time and know how to defend your arguments. Loves his cats. Baldurs Gate 3.
Don't take this class if ur at a full course load. Very time-consuming, there's a lot of writing involved. You have to think about the prompts for the DP & requires a lot of critical thinking. It's easy to lose small points if you don't back up your argument. Read the prompt carefully, if he doesn't like the way you responded he will give you a 0.
He is self centered, son of a B__. He lives in his own delulu world, would not listen to you what so ever. He would contact you but when you try to reach him. He ignores it completely for weeks at time
just a horrible ethic when it comes to educating
His feedback on final paper is so vague and he would fail you
Take an in-person class if you can. Lectures are very engaging bc he's enthusiastic about what he teaches. Take good, thorough notes (typing is much easier). Only assignments were three 100-110 point open-note exams and a 95 point paper. All were easy if you actually paid attention. Detailed notes will help with the FRQ section of exams.
I loved Mr. Wayne SO MUCH! He was such a fun and hilarious professor and all of his lectures were an absolute blast. In my class we even developed an inside joke (sharp rock) and we became the sharp rock gang. I enjoyed the way we explained the material and he made complex philosophers very easy to understand. The tests weren't hard! #sharprockgang
10/10 would recommend, my absolute favorite class of the year! He's very engaging, lectures are easy to understand, he's hilarious and fun to be around, & the tests aren't even that hard! Just take good notes in his class. Not many assignments except for a paper & tests (which are open notes). Love ya Wayne! #sharprock
In person class was fairly easy, very engaging class lectures. Though attendance isn't mandatory as he posts lecture notes and exam reviews on Canvas, I do recommend going to them. Never touched the textbook and passed all of the exams (take good lecture notes). Only graded course work was 3 exams & 1 paper (go to office hours if ur struggling).
I really enjoyed the class, even though it was challenging. It made me think differently about many topics and taught me to create ethical discussions from anything. The course focused on discussions, quizzes, and exams, and doing well on these is key to passing. This professor really cares about his students and their success.
Easiest class. only two papers in the whole semester. Tests are easy because he literally goes through the questions on review days. No textbook needed. All notes he lectures from are posted on canvas so easy access to literally everything needed for class. Showing up to class helps but not mandatory. Easy going prof. would def take again :)
Professor Yuen is an enthusiastic lecturer and encourages students to participate and offer their perspectives in class. The atmosphere is welcoming for all students. He fosters learning through examination and reflection of concepts taught. Additionally, he promotes analysis and application of theories in our everyday life.
100/10 AMAZING professor! Wayne is hilarious which makes his lectures really entertaining. It's very easy to succeed in his class as he's always available during office hours, all lecture notes are posted on canvas, his exams are open note and he reviews for them a week in advance. If you need to take a Phil class TAKE HIM.
Professor Wayne gave a lot of interesting and thought-provoking lectures. He doesn't give any pop quizzes, and all the tests are open book. Also, I can guarantee you that there's no way you can fail his class if you follow the material he teaches in class properly. Overall, I really love this class because of how nice and helpful the professor is.
Wayne is the goat! He's a funny guy and approaches heavy subjects in a light-hearted way. He respects the willingness to have a Hot Take. Not many total assignments, so if you flubbed one of the 3 tests, your grade might look pretty poor for a while. But there's plenty of extra credit opportunities. All the information you need is in the lectures.
I've taken a lot of different classes with this professor and have loved all of them. His lectures are great, and are both informative and really interesting/engaging. His classes are some of my favorite at Ohlone.
Professor Yuen is funny, his lectures are clear, he's good at answering questions, and he provides more than enough materials on Canvas to do the work well. You should attend his lectures, but because everything is on Canvas too, I didn't have any problem completing the assignments even on days where I missed the lectures for them.
I really enjoyed this class and would recommended it to other students. The lectures are pretty good. Professor Wayne goes out of his way to help students learn and understand the material. There's extra credit assignments if you don't do well on the exams. You also have an opportunity to catch up on grades through the two essay assignments.
This professor is fair and gives more than enough time to complete all the assignments, quizzes, and exams. He holds office hours every week and offers so many opportunities to make up on lost points from quizzes and offers plenty extra credit to help everyone. The lectures given to you help a lot and you will pass as long as you read.
Professor Yuen was a wonderful professor to have for my last term at Ohlone college! I sincerely regret not taking any more philosophy classes earlier. He's an incredibly fun professor to have and he can effortless apply class material to real world examples! Highly recommend taking him in person for the best outcome.
Get ready for some funny and informative lectures. Tests are open book, and extra credit is available.
In a class that was no attendance required for no grade this guy was sure on tip about the littlest things. Projecting your weird beliefs onto your students is unprofessional as hell and on top of that he needs to stop trying to salvage that Nutella in the cave if you know what I'm referring to. Do not recommend, there are way better professors.
Homework forces you to think deeply and apply theories you have learned to actual situations that are related to, but not the same as, the questions discussed in the course material. Master Wayne is a big part of the reason I am pursuing a philosophy degree today.
If you need to take this class for credit, then don't bother, he pokes at details too much. He divides the work for the week throughout the week which is annoying.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor Yuen was able to make something quite lecture heavy into something entertaining and interesting. I would take this class again.
Professor Yuen is amazing at what he does and he makes it ridiculously easy to ask for help. He teaches in an entertaining manner and his grading is just, but the workload is minimal.
Took Intro to Philosophy, only had one research paper, and then around 3 multiple choice exams and 3 timed short essay answer exams. Weekly annotations, discussion posts, and quizzes, which were all fairly easy. Best thing about Professor Yuen is how accessible he is. Annotations were sometimes content heavy, but he made it interesting! 10/10
Professor Wayne is an amazing teacher. He is very flexible, the workload is minimal and the exams are easy. He is very easy to talk to and is entertaining in his lectures.
Professor Wayne is a great instructor! He gives opportunities to make up quiz grades and is very funny and easygoing when you make up the grade. I would just say that quizzes are heavily based off of the weekly lectures and some could be long to read.
this class was fast-paced yet engaging as it was late start, with a discussion board, annotations, and a quiz due every week. professor wayne was very responsive, providing us with comments on our annotations, along with the option for feedback all throughout for the paper due at the end of the semester. i learned a lot in this class!
I took this class for credit toward my nursing path, but frankly, Prof Yuen is super knowledgeable and offers exciting, quirky topics to read and write about. I'm sure many others wouldn't share the same perspective, but I genuinely enjoyed the class. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn cool things and be informed about old and new cases!
Professor Yuen was very passionate about the subject which made his lectures enjoyable to listen to. He is clear about the grading criteria and the assignments are not too difficult but help you learn a lot. He is very reachable outside of class and clearly cares a lot about his students.
Of all the professors I've had across many college Campuses, Professor Yuen will go down as one of my favorites. Passionate about his craft and unabashedly himself in every moment. Can't express how much his passion has ignited a flame in me. His lectures are clear and drive home the points even further and missing out on them would be detrimental
Truthfully you're gonna be okay you only have to do a few assignments a week.
He was chill
Lectures are extraordinarily informative, well paced, and engaging. Holds consistent office hours and is open to answering questions; answers to said questions are very informative. Deadlines are important. Gives excellent feedback to discussions.
He gives extra credit and is pretty easy and chill and nice. If you do bad in this class it's genuinely on you cause he gives so many opportunities to make up assignments, retake quizzes, and receive extra credit. he's really helpful and wants his students to succeed and gives plenty of chances to do so
Class was really easy. Professor seems chill and interested in what he teaches. Material is interesting.
