the labs are hard and boring, but he is a really great teacher, all you have to do is ask for help and he will do anything
Best lab teacher I've ever had! Extremely helpful and really goes through everything in detail.
I had mr Xie for both Chem 101 and 102. he is the best. If you need any help at all, he is really patient and always willing to help you out. The labs were a lot of fun, too.
Great lab professor!
He's a decent lab instructor. Definitely helpful in every way. I don't know why but he can seem slightly bitter sometimes.
He's ok, nothing spectacular. Hardly every in a good mood.
Great lab instructor, very professional and helpful. His labs run very smoothly.
He's ok lab instructor. He lectures you everything about lab of the day step by step in instructions. But, he really needs to change his behavior by not being bitter when you ask him questions about lab of the day and getting mad on his students. Also, HE REALLY NEEDS TO STOP BEING SLANDER ABOUT HIS OWN STUDENTS OF OTHER CLASS.
It's true he gets annoyed by ridiculous questions, but if you have a question that makes sense he will gladly answer it. Some people in other classes really bothered him,I thought his stories about other students were quite humerous. He runs a well organized lab and grades extremely fair. Can't wait to have him for 201 lab!
Hes a very good lab instructor. he goes into detail on how to do the lab which is good.As long as you do your labs and put the lab reports in the right order they are suppose to be u can get a easy A in his lab i have also had him for chem 201 lab and he is very easy. He just gets annoyed when people are following safety rules or not paying atent.
Awesome teacher!!! Def take him for lab bc hes straight forward n never make u do stupid things. Ive had him for chem and physics lab (4 classes) and hes by far the best lab instructor
He is a great lab professor. Do all your lab reports and you will get an A. Lab reports are easy too just do the experiment and write them up. He will answer any question you have. He really likes to teach chem.
Great lab instructor, as long as you don't goof around. Does not grade harshly, just do all the work and you will get an easy A for the lab section.
Great professor he is great about answering questions as long as you do not goof off.
Good instructor who explains everything clearly. He is nice, but don't mess around as he can be tempermental.
Prof. Xie was very difficult to understand in lecture, and was difficult to approach during his office hours. However, as a lab instructor, Prof. Xie was pretty good. He always helped us understand exactly what we had to accomplish during the lab.
As a lab instructor he is gr8, grades very fairly, but when it come to lecture, he is not very good, does not do enough e.gs, just reads off whatever is written on the ppt.
Professor Xie was my teacher for CHEM-102 this summer. Boring. Did not teach, read the powerpoint slides to us. Did not make the subject the least bit interesting. Glad I won't have to take another class with him.
Had him for lab. Personable, competent, fair. Has pet peeves about dishonesty and cheating, but I'm right there with him.
Is a little hard to warm up to him, but he is a very good professor. Make sure you have him for lecture though. He is better in Lecture than Lab.
He explains topics well but doesn't do too many problems in front of you. chem 135 is a really vigorous course so it is challenging but it's not a class that's really easy to fail in either. He doesn't even look over the HW assignments so you can easily get a 100% on them w/ out really doing them. Make sure you ask him for help if you need it!
He's a good teacher. He answers your questions and you can talk review quiz and test scores at his office to see what you got wrong. He talks a lot very quickly but that's what you expect from any science professor. Overall, his class was interesting, helpful and challenging.
This course is rigorous because it's chem 101 & 102 combined. You're going to need to really go through your text books and learn things on your own because the professor kind of just reads off of powerpoints w/ out explaining how certain problems are solved on the board. He'll just give a problem and then the answer. Ask him questions!
He's more in his element in lab rather than lecture but still terrific in both enirons. It will take you about one lecture to get past his accent. A thorough lecturer (although he uses a lot of powerpoints which seems to be the norm these days),fair hw and quiz assignments. Slightly tough exams(which are needed here) and can be very funny at times
Extremely bad lecture teacher. He did absolutely nothing but read power point slides. When we had 1 week of classes to learn 3 chapters for an exam we and only did 2,but all 3 were on it anyway. He told us it was our responsibility to "teach ourselves".I guess my tuition was a gift because of how nice he is.And Exams are very hard and 50% of the grade
Gives a lot homework questions (ranging in the hundreds) that are mostly redundant and are graded for completion instead of accuracy. Lectures make comprehensible topics (such as electron orbital distribution) seem confusing. Lectures are unnecessary, as professor just reads powerpoints (that are posted online)
Professor Xie is a great person, but lacks in lecturing strength. He lectures straight from the power points, which are confusing, BUT the textbook, by Nivaldo Tro, is absolutely amazing. I understood it better than I did the lectures themselves. Tests are difficult. Exam 2 has A LOT of math and not a lot of time, KNOW YOUR MATH!!!!!!
I really enjoyed Prof. Xie's lectures. He is very knowledgable about chemistry and is very enthusiastic about sharing it with his students. If you need help on homework, take home quizzes, or exam reviews he is more than willing to help. Test are a bit tough but if you do the review packets you should be well prepared.
I once attended one of Xie's classes that I wasn't even in, because my lecturer sucked, and he's so good. Yes, he's VERY powerpoint-reliant--and those powerpoints are a lifesaver. If you memorize them, you'll be set for a chem career. Don't ever put off assignments til the last minute. If you dole them out, you'll be fine; you wait, you'll fail.
Not very clear lectures, review assignments were not like the test, hard to understand
Although this professor is hard, lectures incredibly too fast especially when snow days occur, and gives hundreds of problems for homework, he is probably the best to go to and take. He will take his time explaining to you, and his office is open which I surely used. If I had to take the class over, I would take him again
Mr. Xie is hands down the best Chemistry professor Ive ever had!!!! His lectures are very clear and power-points are amazing. He gives great homework and quizzes that are basically extra credit for your learning purposes. Don't be afraid to ask for help, his door is always open! Do your homework, stay ahead, You'll PASS!
He's an AMAZING PROFESSOR!! TAKE HIS CLASS!! Do the homework, the take-home quizzes, and do well on the three exams, and you will get an A no problem!! He's always available everyday for office hours and is so nice and funny in lectures. He makes sure you know EXACTLY what to expect for exams, and gives reviews for every one!! TAKE HIM!!!!
Took this course during the 5 week condensed summer class. Since it was only 5 weeks, he taught very fast. YOU NEED TO STUDY AND PRACTICE AT HOME to do well on the second exam (ALL MATH). He always says this line, "Chem-is-TRY so if you don't try, you won't pass". I would recommend another teacher; no extra credit, no leniency, super strict.
I have taken more than one chemistry class with him before, and you can see it's because he is amazing.:) Definitely study, read, and ask for help if you are stuck in something. You can stop by his office hours and he will assist you. Take advantage of tutoring if you think it's hard but you will pass if you study hard and show up to class.
Professor Xie is awesome! He was my chem 102 lab instructor. I did not have him for lecture, but his lab was very fun. He was straightforward and told you what you needed to study for the lab quizzes and was very helpful if you had a question or did not understand the lab. This was my favorite lab by far because of him!!! Take him!!!
Had him for Fall 2015. Amazing professor. He has a great passion for chemistry and is excellent at explaining concepts clearly. He finds ways to make chemistry fun, but can also be serious and will not tolerate slack.
Hone your basic algebra skills before the course. The math isn't too challenging, but if you struggle with manipulating equations/ratios it could be intimidating. He lectures from powerpoints but they are GOOD powerpoints, and help clarify material in the text. He also gives great exam reviews! Exam 2 is terrible, but I'm hoping he'll change it.
I took chem 101 and 102 lectures. And chem 201 and chem 202 lab with him. Overall he is okay. He can be arrogant at times. Sometimes even has a bit of an attitude. No need for textbook just use the powerpoints!
Took this class during the 5wk summer and it was hard. You have to study at home and put lots of effort in to get a good grade unless you're a chem wiz already. Pr. Xie is interesting, sometimes cocky, moody, nice or mean. he grades tough and gives no extra credit whatsoever. STUDY THE EXAM REVIEWS, they are almost identical to the actual exam
Pr. Xie is a great teacher, his power points are on point. Class attendance isn't necessary, and if you understand his power points you can teach yourself. He is very willing to help you out if necessary, just send him a message to meet with him outside of class. He is great at giving examples to further your understanding.
Chem 135 is demanding. His lectures are pretty good. He answers your questions. This class was really about yourself studying hard. GO TO THE LECTURES. its gonna save you time because you wont understand a thing if you just study alone. You get easily 100/100 on homework and 25/25 on quizzes. If you study a bit then you can easily go for a B
I am an A student and I do take pride of not just learning the subject, but also trying to find way to enjoy it. I love chemistry, and this professor made things so much harder by not teaching the subject, instead he skipped through the slideshows. He expects you to pretty much study alone. His lecture are worthless for the learning process.
Just lectures with PowerPoint slides. I never actually learned anything from his class. I had to self taught literally everything. The only good thing he does offer is a practice exam before you take it with the answers. You have to figure out how to do them on your own.
He just read slides.
He is not cooperative professor. You can't ask questions in class. He'll start yelling at you. He humiliated students in class multiple times. He'll confuses you by explaining something all the way and then he will say wrong! this is not the way to do it. Chemistry is not an easy course and he made it worse. It was an awful experience. RUN AWAY!
Amazing professor. I learned so much from his lectures and power points. If you do your hws, THQ, and practice exam, you will do well on the exams.
Mr. Xie is a very helpful professor. He stays on track during the lectures and is straightforward in his grading. He responds back to emails quickly. Take advantage of his office hours because he will answer any question.
Cares about the success of his students. He makes it very clear that he wants you to learn and understand the material. I had a really hard time in this class and had to put hours and hours but it was worth it. I learned a lot and challenged myself.
Take Xie! He's the best. I took his CHEM101 during the summer session. He explains things fully to ensure eeryone undersands concepts. Answers questions with kindness and patience. His exams are straightforward and requires you to read his powerpoint slides. If you have previous chem experince, class attendance is not required.
Not the best teacher, but easy to pass if you finished three awful homework. He will curve the final so that everyone can get at least B. Keep in mind that this is a gateway class for Engineering student who wants to transfer to another college.
Not the best teacher. He literally reads off of the powerpoint. He is boring, doesn't really explain that well either. But quizzes are take home and the VERY long homework are graded on completion.
The exams are what counts. He doesn't give extra credit and he doesn't curve other than the final. BUT ITS OKAY because as long as you read over and understand the PowerPoints and go over the study guide you will do fine. The almost a straight copy of the study guide. He challenges you but he cares as well and will answer any questions that u have
I have taken Professor Xie for CHEM 101 and CHEM 201. He is strict and you have to do homework hardly to pass the class. He is straight forward and love students. He seems difficult but if you work hard and practice usually, you will get a good grade definitely. You can feel his passion with Chem.I will take him for another class if I had a chance.
Chemistry is a challenging course of course, but Professor Xie manages to make it quite understandable. He is always willing to help and answer any questions available.
His classes are ridiculously exam heavy. He also doesn't curve exams, even when the class average is a 61%. You can tell he really loves Chem but he is not concise at all when explaining the topic. Be ready to teach yourself a whole lot if you're going with him.
He is a great professor. He enjoys what he does and it helps with the learning experience. He is very clear and upfront about what the class is going to be like and encourages and reminds the class about upcoming assignments or tests. Extra credit is built into the class. Very helpful with questions and meeting after class.
I just made my account in order to rate the professor. "Take his class, If you want to get an A." This professor teaches so well. So well. Let's talk about Chem is Try. :) First, you cant get A, if you dont go to his lectures. Second, you cant get A, if you dont do his assignments. Third, you cant get A, if you dont study from "practice tests."
Xie is a terrible professor. Does not understand the word respect. Always yells and scolds students in class.
Professor Xie is hands down one of the most straight forward professors Ive ever had. He goes over EVERYTHING you need to know and walks you through how to solve problems before moving on -his exam reviews are almost identical to the tests. Unlike the people who left bad reviews, if you actually show up to lectures and study, its an easy A.
This isn't an easy class, there is a lot of work you'll have to do outside of class to guarantee a good grade. Few exams and some take home quizzes and homework. There's not a lot of time to go over all the concepts and equations for those new to chem/haven't taken it in a while. He's an awesome prof, though. Do the practice work and you'll be ok.
Professor Xie is a caring and wonderful teacher. Although the class itself is difficult he always make an effort to try to help students in need with his office hours. Would definitely take a course with him again.
Awesome professor. Is very clear as to what is expected of you when it comes to course work and information needed for the exams. The exams are what really counts. There are 4 take home quizzes, 3 exams, a final, and 3 arduous homework's, but the homework's are great practice for exams. GO TO LECTURE, IT IS PIVOTAL. Would take him again for sure.
Xie just reads slides. Is a very unprofessional and inconsiderate professor. Should not be teaching. Is very tempermental and lashes out in class.
He is an okay professor. His lecture slides are VERY helpful and his quizzes are what matter the most. Do the homework and you'll be fine for the test. He actually sets time up for students to visit him which is nice. He's nor the best because he takes takes way too long just to finish a sentence and goes on to talk about something.
While the class was mainly taking weekly notes on 2-hour, pre-recorded lectures, it's not hard at all. Quizzes are every other week, but they're open-note and open-textbook. As long as you make an effort to watch lectures, you'll do perfectly fine.
Professor Xie wouldn't give out too much work and the exams were all open note. The worst thing I hated about this class is that he didn't have any lectured zoom calls and he didn't provide any office hours.
I really enjoyed Professor Wei Xie with my online class. He is very fair and helpful. He really cares about you doing well. For my class, he sent out an encouraging email every week of the semester. His lectures were very clear about everything he wants you to know.
By the grace of god I passed this class with a C. But this class was boring he does pre-recorded lectures and it was just him reading off of a slide.
Professor Xie was extremely open to helping his students throughout the semester. This is a tough class though and required about 50% of my time over my 3 other classes. The exams this semester were open book. This did not make it easy though. You must be able to perform complicated stoichometry equations to pass this class.
Horrible professor. Worst I have ever taken. He just drones on and on and reads slides to you. He doesn't even teach.
Chemistry was one of the hardest classes of my college career. This class will challenge you and push you to your limits. Do not expect to get an A unless you put hours of work going over the powerpoint lectures and practice problems. However, Prof Xie is by far my favorite professor. I went to office hours 2-3 times per week and passed with an A.
Online class: lecture-heavy: 3-hour videos per chapter + 1 hour lecture, times 10 chapters. He was NOT ACCESSIBLE. He always said in the lectures and in the classroom to ask him questions, he didn't made himself available during any other time outside of the classes, other than 10 irritated minutes after class. He said to ask tutors to help me.
He's a nice person but he assigns a lot of work. Lecture videos can sometimes be up to six hours every week on top of the extra practice problems, Zoom and the Lab, I only recommend taking him if you've taken Chemistry before, have excellent time management, and/or aren't taking more than two other classes. This class will consume your study time.
Doesnt help, just does his own thing, no desire to know if his students are understanding the material
Took Professor Xie for Chem 102 this summer--grading criteria is clear and exams were heavily based on in-class assignments + quizzes. He is very responsive through email and is very willing to help students. As long as effort is put in, a good grade can be received. Overall one of the best profs!
Professor Xie is very fair and cares about his students learning. Chem is not an easy breezy class and I learned that the hard way - by withdrawing. He makes his policies very clear at the start and reiterates that you won't be successful without practicing and studying. I would take his class again
Will help you if needed, but beware Chem 101 is a lot of material, a lot of my class mates have had trouble passing. If you take this class you need to commit a time study, otherwise you will not pass.
Prof. Xie is a very great teacher to begin chemistry 101 with. Everything needed to pass the course is almost spoon fed to the student and all it takes is a high effort to be able to digest the information and to give a lot of effort to understand the material. - Practice Exams are key to success - Study the Lectures and Textbook - Office Hours!
CHEM-135 is basically CHEM 101 and 102 in 1 semester which is a lot but I would definitely not have been able to get an A without the professor. The class consists of lecture videos on canvas about 2-3 hours a week, 4 exams including the final, and 5 quizzes, one of them being extra credit. He also allows late work for full credit. Amazing Prof.
Great professor. Makes the course easily passable by reusing "Flipped Classroom" questions and ICP questions on exams. Study those and how to solve them, you'll be good. Class has you learn one whole chapter every week so be prepared for the pace. It is VERY fast but he is an easy, by-the-book, grader. Just do all of your work, every week. Easy A.
Prof Xie helped me understand chem so well! His flipped classroom format was so helpful because any questions I didnt understand in my own time would be gone over in lecture. Also, he recycles most of his questions for exams which helped me pass!! Keep in mind there is a ton of material but he is always there if you have questions. Amazing prof!
I took chem101 with professor Xie. He made the class not only super informative and clear but also super enjoyable. His analogies made it really easy to visualize the concepts, and he always made it really clear what was expected of us for the tests. Overall, it was probably one of my best experiences with a college science course.
I chose prof for CHEM 101(B) and 102(A). He's cool with late work and you will do well on exams if you study his practice problems THAT ARE FORMATTED LIKE THE EXAM. Everything builds off the previous chapters so start studying asap. Don't be afraid to ask questions/go to his office hours and study! If you do all that you'll have a great semester :)
There is a lot of material covered in the class and if you don't understand something, ask! I scored horribly on the tests but it was entirely my fault for not dedicating enough time and effort. He lets you have 1 index card per exam and for the final, will allow up to 4. Practice exams are JUST LIKE the actual exam so do them and you'll be set!
very rude when I tried to ask for questions or help. he assigned 4 to 8 hours of reading+videos each week, all of which we were required to prove we watched. I actually learned the material on youtube before the exams. his exams had few questions, meaning that they were very weighted and could easily lose a letter grade through a small mistake.
This is a great professor. He uses online lectures to teach and does a lot of practice problems in the in person lectures. His exams are easy if you do the review packets. He always uses the lecture before the exam to do a review session. If you have questions, go to his office hours or email him. I didn't read the textbook and scored very well.
He was all around a pretty bad professor. He always encouraged the class that he was there to help during office hours but on the multiple occasions I went he seemed reluctant and annoyed that he had to help which was pretty uncomfortable and weird. Honestly, I can't even fit the rest of the reasons not to take him because of the word limit.
Marketed the class as a lecture but proceeded to teach it with a "flipped classroom setting"no feedback on homework, belittled students occasionally. be prepared to spend at least 8 hours reviewing material each week if you take this class. Would not recommend it. however he seemed to want his students to succeed and accessible after class
The class is pretty easy overall. As long as you watch all of the flipped classroom videos and do some of the practice questions you should be fine. The exam review guides are VERY similar to the exam. His in person lectures are very slow and boring which is why I recommend watching the flipped classroom videos.
Bro i literally love professor xie hes honestly the best chem teacher at hcc i had him for lecture for CHEM 101 and lab for CHEM 102 love him so much professor xie supremacy
I like this professor a lot. He provides lecture videos that you can look back at and he's willing to give you extensions on assignments as well. His lectures are long but he's willing to help you outside of class when needed. The clas itself is hard but I belive he makes it manageable.
I had professor Xie for CHEM LAB. He is very personable, laid-back, AND FUNNY. I do not know how he is for a lecturer. Do the work before he grades it and you get full credit and don't mess up the lab.
Professor Xie is one of the best prof. I've taken at HCC. Talented teacher with a great personality who truly enjoys inspiring students. Always very helpful and caring. Lectures are clear and concise; turns difficult material into something more easily understandable. Highly recommend that you take him. Makes chem likable even for non-chem majors.
CHEM 135 and 135 lab: Responds to questions quickly through email. Very lenient late policy on almost all assignments. Lectures are somewhat boring, but he tries to include jokes which helps a lot with engagement. Passionate teacher who wants you to understand and enjoy chemistry. The course is difficult, NOT the professor. I would recommend!
Literally one of the best professors in the CHEM department. He was pretty laid back and didn't give much work. Just make sure to do the practice exams (they're the same format as the real exams) and make good notecards. There was also a big curve on the final when I took the course!
He is a good professor at first I didn't like his style of teaching he positioned the class an in person lecture but he required us to watch recorded lectures before class which he would then summarize in person and do practice problems, if you're taking him as an online class he Is great!
He is the GOAT of chem - Be prepared for "It is just conversion factor dimensional analysis, quantity to be converted multiplied by conversion factor, nothing new here, there is no chinge in this topic, just new conversion factor" He is a very good teacher, funny guy
Great profesor. Not a huge fan of his flipped format but he does lots of practice with students. Very funny guy.
Mr Xie loves giving you the opportunity to learn, and you have to take the initiative. This class is really concentrated, attendance is required to do well in this course. Exams all multiple choices. He gives you all the tools and time needed to become successful in class, you just need to take initiative to master the materials.
(My Inorganic chem lab professor)- Those lab reports will take you out but the more you complete them, the easier they get. He's an easy grader and the final had 10 questions all multiple choice. He wrote directions for the lab on the board each class, and he is very understanding about results like percent error if you mess up.
Overall, Professor Xie is a very good teacher for Chem-135. He is understandable and makes his lectures entertaining with jokes. All of his lectures are also online if you're not able to attend class. Chem-135 is Chem 1 and 2 in one class, so the class moves fast, especially at the end of the semester. If you want to do good, you need to keep up.
