She knows her material but she is very hard to understand because of her accent.
I stopped going to her lectures because I was able to understand 10% of what she was saying. Just be prepared to learn everything by yourself. Lecture will not help you. Recitation teacher Tony Lipinski was very helpful though.
she would be a good teacher if she taught in china...i understrand my dog better than her....dont take the class unless u want to teach yourself..
i didnt have that much trouble understanding her, but had a friend sit with me so together we got everything she said...only word of caution is make sure your prepared for the tests most people didnt have enough time to get through it during class
I think she's a great teacher who explains difficult concepts over and over again so that we'll will be able to grasp the material firmly. Her exams are sometimes tough, and her final exam is cumulative(which was a pain for many of us), but anyways, I survived and managed to get an A- while putting 85% of effort.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. She was almost impossible to understand and she would spend most of her time on concepts that weren’t even on the test. If u wana take this class plan on spending a lot of time in the library teaching it to yourself. The tests are very very long and in no way did anyone ever have time to finish!
THE WORST. I wish UB offered more teachers that taught the course. maybe 1 that spoke better english because i might as well have the guy that announces soccer on the spanish station teach the class because id draw the same from it "what? didnt catch that, what about what account? could you repeat that? slow down a little?" theres no avoiding her
UB has to get rid of teachers like this who barely speak english to 400 american students. She might explain things over and over, but whats the point when every word she says sounds the same. She might understand english and did well in school, but that doesnt make her a qualified teacher with 400 american students trying to become accountants.
By far the WORST professor I've ever had at UB. Her English is horrible! The weekly quizes she gives are extremly hard and should be reserved for exams. Maybe should be restricted to teaching accounting to native Chinese students.
Why is she allowed to teach in America?
Like seriously? She has no clue!!!
Prof. Xu is a smart woman, she got her PhD from WUSTL. With that being said, she should not teach native English speakers accounting. At times the things she says are incomprehensible. If you read the book, do the homework, and take the practice exam you will do fine on the tests. Go to class and sit in teh front and try to make out what she says.
hard to understand, a lot of work, hard tests
not as horrible as the other reviewers said, quizzes are fair, and tests are similiar to the practice exams, as long as you understand the lecture notes you should be able to get an easy A- with 80% effort.
She is underrated after looking at the other ratings...her tests are fair along with her quizes and the material is relevant so she is a good prof.
It was very hard because her asin accent was extremely strong that it put me in a tracnce and it was hard to pay attention. Howvere, the ta's were great!!!
Not as bad as everyone says... she has very helpful study aids and her accent really isnt that bad if you're paying attention. Would definitely take her again.
The accent was horrible and made me not want to come to class. ALl you have to do is do the hw and there are eexamples in the book. Go to rec. and take the quizzes and theyre easy and there the concepts are explained. then go over the practice tests. I got a B and imagine if i studied!!!
She is a great professor...it might be a bit difficult to understand her, but she eaches well, and her examples in the slides are very helpful. Her exams aren't too difficult, and shes fair.
Very very hard to understand. I stopped going to class because it was pointless... If you can teach yourself with the textbook then you will be fine. The quizzes aren't bad and the tests are fair. Make use of your TA.
This teacher is very hard to understand because of her accent, which pretty much makes you responsible to learn the material on your own.
Where to begin... Going to class is pointless since her accent is one of the thickest; you cannot understand a word out of her mouth. She is somewhat flexible if you have a problem, the only good thing about her. Rely on yourself and friends to study together and do well. The material is harder but the exams are decent.
She is impossible to understand. She has no time for students and refuses to answer questions during lecture. The only way I got a B was through help of friends.
i did not attend one class, at all. your ta and friends carry you though this class, but it's the same thing as mga201. you know what to expect on exams and she provides practice exams. do the practice exams and pay attention to the hw problems in recitation and you will do fine in this class.
Shes one of those type of people where you either like them or you don't. Personally i thought she was tolerable, and her accent wasn't nearly as bad as some professors i've had. The material imo is easier than mga201, and I actually did better in her class than i did in Anderson's. The exams and quizes are fair as long as you semi study. Use ur TA
Don't listen to all these complaints. Her English is not that bad; sit in front if you have trouble. Tests are fair and she tells you exactly the questions she will ask.
Very very difficult to understand
I took her one year ago. She was very helpful and her accent wasn't very bad when I was sitting in her class. Just like what I did in other classes, I did not read the accounting book. Her notes were very comprehensive. If you attend her classes, you should be able to get at least a B. Take her class!
Why is she allowed to teach in America? don take her she is worst prof....
Cant understand a word she says
The professor is hard to understand and speaks way too fast. Fortunately, the TAs help out a lot during recitation. The workload is somewhat heavy but much easier than mga201. Easy A if you do all the work.
for fall/2008 Xu is the only professor teaching mga202. So you have no choice. Xu is a hard working professor; therefore, she needs to go on a vacation and never come back!!!
People, her accent is not that bad. I understood every word she said. Just listen a little more carefully. Anyone who complains about her speech just wants to have a built-in excuse to do poorly.
Avoid taking her class if you can.
Her accent is not that bad unless you lived in a hole and have never heard one before. She's tricky on her exams, but if you study all the exams and reviews this class is bearable. She's hard, but you have to know the material to pass so it's actually worth it if you want to learn. Attendance is mandatory and labs are a must!
Practice Sets, she needs to cut it out with those. They are way too time consuming and do not help learning in the slightest. Hate them. And her accent really isn't that bad people if you attended her lectures faithfully, you get used to it. Just, there was way too much work in this class for a 202 level course.
[Requirements: 3 Exams (w/ final), 11 REC quizzes (9 graded), attendance, weekly homework, 2 practice sets] Her accent isn't bad, homework is not too time consuming and is graded on effort only. There are practice tests for review! The practice sets are tricky but she is willing to help. Go to class, don't put off practice sets and you'll be fine.
i thought she was a good professor, a little hard to understand at times but definitely manageable. exams are same as practice test. the class is much easier than 201
I LOVE professor Xu.She is so cutesy and friendly.I honeslty think shes better then anderson. As long as you go to class and copy down the fill in the blanks on the lecture sides its sooo easy. Her accent is not hard to understand and shed be willing to help you in a heartbeat. People that put her down just probably didnt go to class.
Class is boring. Heavy accent makes already not easy material even more difficult. No other teacher for this class, best bet is go to lecture and take down the fill in notes. Hardly go to lecture and am still managing to pull an A. Just study like crazy for the tests. Grading scale is out of 2 tests & a final, 2 practice sets, recitations & quizzes
She is a little hard to understand but anything you miss can be found in the textbook. The grading is fair and she is super nice and is willing to help you out any time. The practice sets are time consuming so start early. I would say she is just as easy as Anderson.
MAKE SURE U KNOW EXCEL BEFORE TAKIN THE CLASS !either take orrange before this or make sure u know excel. i never used excel bef and BOMBED my 1st practice set. (2 worth as much as 1 test combined) She really gotta put some time into her accent. SRSLY. i have to constantly go back to the text and see wat she meant. But she's real @ office hours.
Went to class 3 times all semester. syllabus day, exam 1 and exam 2. accent is brutal. do the practice tests and you are money
Midterm test were a bit challenging, final exam was easier. Tough class but managable. You must pay close attention she has a very thick accent
Prepare to do a lot of reading of slides or frequently visit your TA's office. Do the practice tests as well. You really don't need to go to class if you do all those things because you can't understand her if you go.
Accent is pretty thick on the first day, but it gets easier to understand her after a few classes. Exams are pretty easy, and follows her practice exams pretty closely. I got an A but I attended every class and studied hard for every exam & quiz (quizzes are exactly like homework questions). She is very friendly & approachable. I learned a lot from
Impossible to understand ! If you take the course with her plan on either hiring a tutor, or teaching the subject to yourself through the textbook
This class was hell. Couldn't understand a word she said, plus she would spend 20 min of every class completely off topic. Be prepared to teach yourself some accounting
oh my goodness- you need to do one of the following- 1. take a lot of notes as your figuring out what language she is speaking or 2. pay attention to the slide... impossible to do both, if you write something down, you wont understand what she is saying.. class was easy though, online homeworks were cake. had a good TA, was respectful of athletics
not nearly as bad as people make her sound. you'll be completely lost on the first day but the accent gets easier as the semester goes on. read the book and put a little time into studying and its not too hard to get an A.
Weihong is a nice lady but difficult to understand and doesn't present the material that well. You have to practice a lot by yourself to learn the material and her tests are way too hard, asking about things you barely ever went over in class or recitation. I don't recommend her, take it over the summer with someone else.
Love Professor Xu! Probably the best accounting professor at UB. She's very clear on what she expects on exams and quizzes, no surprises. Difficult to understand at first but once you get over the accent she's great.
HORRIBLE!!! WOrst professor of my life. DOesnt know how to speak a spit of english!
She obviously speaks english in order to become an accounting professor at UB, however she does have an accent. Attendances is mandatory, and online hw are super easy. But her final exam was a bit too much, consider the time and the load of problems that was given to us. Other than that she's pretty awesome and super helpful!
I enjoyed her class two years ago. She is super helpful. I am a senior accounting students. The majority of the cost knowledge I learnt from her not Nesper. I sincerely respect her and thanks for her help from academics.
Not as bad as everyone says she is. Her accent takes some time to get used too. An A in the class is an 90 and a A- is an 85. Very reasonable class to get a decent grade
She was a terrible professor! I am a student that always attends class and takes notes, but she couldn't teach and present the material well enough like Anderson does and her accent was thick. Her exams are extremely hard even when my friends and I studied hardcore for days and days before it. She's just not good at teaching is all.
Her accent is thick but shes not impossible to understand but still sucked at presenting the material well. Expect to run out of time on the second exam and final. Homework is easy. Quizzes get tricky. Try to pile up your points from homework and attendance and exam 1. Practice set was not too bad. Tough class, you have to put work in to do good
She does have an accent but it's not strong at all. She is a great professor and teaches very well. She knows her material well&tries to be funny to entertain the crowd. Her exams are EASY!Make sure to go to class and pay attention so you wont need to study much outside of class. She gives out practice exams that is very similar to the actual one.
While still understandable, her accent makes it tough at times. Decent professor and seemed to be helpful. If you put in an average amount of work, you should be able to get an A.
Not only is accounting hard in the first place but she makes it 10X harder. She has a very thick accent and sometimes doesnt even know what shes teaching. The tests arent weighted and she doesnt give much help in review
The material is not hard. Easy A class. Her slides are very useful. The group project is very helpful to build up your skills with excel. Utilize the office hours and tutoring hours, then you will pass with at least A-B+.
Her accent is not the worst at UB, You get used to it pretty fast. I lived in my TA's office hours to make sure I always got full credit on the homework. The practice set was pretty easy, just tedious, its outlined in the textbook and the TA's will help you. Her tests are pretty tough, and you are short on time. Overall you have to work for an A
She's not that hard to understand. She's very easy going and her test and quizzes are very easy!!
She is a good professor. She knows how to teach, and devotes time to clearing concepts. Those who are criticising her accent should realise the fact that they'll be entering the business world in a few years, which is becoming increasingy international. So, be prepared to work with people having accents that are different from yours.
She's a great lecturer, she clearly knows her stuff, is personable and easy going . Honestly her accent isn't bad at all, if you can't understand her or get used to the accent you really shouldn't be going into business...
Get ready to teach yourself. At certain times in class I found it hard to follow along with what Professor Xu was doing. Her handwriting is sloppy and she flips through pages too quickly sometimes. Weekly quizzes can be very tricky and I found the tests to be challenging. Try to load up points on the homeworks, attendance, and the final project.
I pretty much taught myself. 100% recommend to go to TA office hours if you want to pass/learn anything. Extremely hard to understand and follow along during class. I thought that the weekly quizzes were easy, but the tests were extremely challenging, especially the multiple choice sections.
You won be able to understand what she is saying. She makes tests and quizzes 10 times harder than other accounting professors. Most of the students end up teaching themselves via tutoring help, books, online resources etc. Accounting is already hard and she makes it more stressful.
Can not understand her, she talks way too fast, and her handwriting is terrible
Xu tries to make everything very fair. You can rake up a lot of points from the homework, recitation quizzes, attendance, and an excel project. Her multiple choice questions come from the lectures and if you redo the recitation quizzes until you understand them, then you will do well on the part 2s. This class can be overwhelming but not impossible
Prof Xu isn't great.. The class is already hard and her accent creates a barrier that makes it almost impossible to understand her. Exams are worth a LOT of your grade but the points for quizzes, attendance, and the project add up quickly so don't consistently do bad on them. I failed a quiz or two along with my first exam, but came out with an A-
She speaks so fast in the lecture, you will not have chance to take any notes or you will miss the important points from this course. And she was careless in correcting the examination papers that she made several mistakes on my paper.
Professor Xu is quite terrible. I know online classes are tough for teachers too, but Xu does an awful job conveying course material during lecture. She uses the draw feature on word/powerpoint and writes all over the slides with illegible handwriting and it makes everything disorganized. Shows no sympathy and disregarded several of my emails
Her accent is thick making it difficult to understand what she is saying, moves quickly through the notes, and do not expect to get all of the notes down. McGraw Hill Connect you will have to use to do homework. The software is 50/50 especially when you get to chapter 3 answering the last part when you put down the correct answer it will say wrong
This lady should not be a professor. Her English is terrible and even sitting in the front row I still cant understand her well. She talks super fast yet asks that students not type their notes because laptops are "distracting". This is a challenging course but exams aren't curved. If there was another professor who taught it I'd switch immediately
By far the worst professor I have ever had in my college career! I don't know how she still has her job. She is so hard to understand and she speeds through notes. Her handwriting/note taking during lecture is so hard to read. Quizzes during recitations are difficult and the tests are even worse. Take this class at your own risk!!
It's super hard to understand her since she talks fast and has a thick accent. She doesn't give much class content for you to learn and study with, besides the lecture notes. The tests looks different than the stuff she teaches in class. I'd advise you to avoid her as a professor but if she's your only option then be prepared to teach yourself.
She is very hard to understand!!! Tests and quizzes are tough with the tests looking NOTHING like the review sheets. Excel project is okay, but VERY tedious. Overall, she is pretty bad. If you can take this course with any other professor, I highly recommend doing so. If she is your only option, then get ready to teach yourself EVERYTHING.
This professor was kind of hard to understand. I found that during class, if I just looked away and paid attention to my notes for just one second, I would be lost on what she would be saying. Make sure you go to lectures and recitations and participate because she grades you on attendance and participation. The info builds up really quickly.
Tbh her accent isn't even that bad, but I don't get how she expects us to understand the material when she speaks faster than Busta Rhymes during class. The TAs really saved me tho. She has a very old school way of presenting the material, so get ready to be glued to your textbook. Hw's and quizzes are easy but her tests will humble you real quick.
So difficult to understand which makes sitting through a lecture impossible. Talks fast and with heavy accent.
Don't understand how the university lets her be the only MGA202 professor when nobody can understand a word she says. If you can understand her then you're in luck. But for most people. this class just becomes that much more difficult because of how fast she speaks, and her accent
To no fault of her own, this is a very difficult to sit through not because of the content, but her accent. Teaching yourself the material is difficult, however may be necessary if you have her as a professor as it is extremely difficult to understand what she is saying due to her cadence and accent while lecturing. Nice lady, though.
She is a very nice and understanding professor, however her accent is hard to understand so the class does become somewhat difficult at times as a lot of material is learned during lecture
The fact that she teaches the most difficult business pre-req while having such a strong accent is honestly a joke. Read the textbook and do the hws and you'll be okay, but difficult to succeed in this class with her as professor
Very unclear instructions and hard to understand. However, if you study the content on you are, you can do well in the class. Just be prepared to spend lots of time learning the material yourself
Nice lady, very hard class. She is impossible to understand when you combine her accent and the speed at which she speaks. I thought everyone else was over-exaggerating, but it is the real deal. To have success in this class you need to study the homework and do the practice exams, because her lectures will not help you at all. Excel project = Easy
Impossible to understand. Material is difficult already but her accent and speed of speaking makes it 10x harder
UB please don't let her teach MGA 202 anymore. Nobody can understand her. This class is so difficult when you can't understand the professor.
Exams are difficult, quizzes and homework are not. Learning in lecture is pretty hard with her accent but go to TA office hours and you should be okay.
Listen to everybody else. Her accent is not easy to understand and this class moves fast. Excel project, quizzes and homework are easy, but the exams are pretty difficult
Very difficult to learn material with the way she speaks/speeds through the content. I think there is another option for MGA 202 professor, so definitely go with them if you can.
Class itself is challenging, professor Xu did not make it any easier during lecture. Don't even bother going to lecture, just teach yourself and go to TAs and you can pass the course
Prof Xu is one of the WORST professors I have had at UB this far. During my senior year and having to sit through long lectures where you can not understand the material, and being belittled if you have a question that was previously gone over in another lecture. No other option for a 306 professor as well. Do better SOM and UB this is crazy.
UB is so frustrating. Constantly hiring professors who are impossible to understand and doing NOTHING about it when students complain and/or do poorly as a result. Difficult to blame the professor when her accent and way of speaking is not her fault, but she should not be a professor
Confusing and difficult to understand as most of the other reviews have noted. Makes the class more difficult than it needs to be
Unable to convey material clearly, and disorganized. This falls on UB though for hiring and keeping a professor of such nature though
Would give her a 0 if I could. Would learn better in this course with no professor at all, just self-teaching anyways, cuz trying to learn in her lectures is impossible.
This lady is definitely the worst professor I've had and she is the least likable person too. She scheduled a midterm exam, worth 30% of students grade, the day after fall break where many students went away and had no time to study. She also is impossible to understand, but forces students to come to lecture and sign in. Be ready to teach yourself
Cant Understand her
Can't learn in a class where you don't understand the professor
Caring and nice professor. She is a kind lady, but her teaching material is not always relevant to the exams or quizzes. Most students are often shocked to find questions on the exams/quizzes that they have never seen before.
Avoid at all costs if you don't want a headache all year. The fact we are paying to take a class taught by her is an absolute travesty and scam. Haven't learned a lick of valuable information all year, mostly because she barely speaks english and talks through all stuff way to fast assuming we already know it or that its "very easy".
She is so difficult to understand, wish there were more professor options for this course.
Wish UB would take the hint that she should not and cannot teach this course or any course for that matter. I'm doing okay in this course simply because of the crazy hours I put into it outside of class, because nothing during it makes sense
bruh come on UB this lady can barely speak english no disrespect
Worst class EVER! Professor is hard to understand and just assumes that her work is easy for students to understand. Nobody knows whats going on during her lectures and they're a complete waste of time. She makes attendance mandatory so you to waste a few hrs a week that you could've been studying for. Exams are challenging and there's no curve.
Terrible professor, I thought she was nice and kind at the start of the semester. Her grading is awful. She does not do her job properly. Her class average is 60/100. She tests us on material that she has never covered before. I always pay attention and take notes, I have 95 average in all my classes except hers. Do not take her if you can!!
dont do it. do not. you will thank me at some point.
Save yourself the stress, and take any other professor possible if you can. Cannot understand her at all, and is an unforgiving professor on top of that.
Wish I didn't have to go through that class with her, but glad I won't have to again. All the other reviews are accurate. Stay away if possible
Class is interesting, and somewhat difficult. Only made more difficult through her teaching method, though.
Listen to everybody else
Shrimp fried the rice
I can not understand her
Hard to understand, talks quiet and fast. Awful handwriting on top of it so hard to figure out anything that is happening or being said in class. Quizzes are difficult. Extremely hard to learn from, should not have became a teacher if she cannot teach and answer questions well. Clearly very smart woman so she goes fast and does not explain well.
Just not a good teacher. Hard to understand and expects you to know everything she teaches without explaining.
I guess this is the professor that you get for going to a public school. Be prepared to go to class for 1 day only to realize the professor doesn't speak english. The fact that she is employed by UB is an insult to students. I think we should poll for her to be banned from teaching at any universities not in Asia.
impossible to understand, and the majority of the grade comes from tests and quizzes. There is a group project, but she has talked about how hard she grades that as well.
The course material itself is not challenging. She finds a way to make it confusing. Very strong accent. Will routinely say to the class kids normally do terrible on this quiz. Nice lady and very smart, but isn't fit to teach a technical course. Hard to understand sometimes. Straight forward with material. Easy class for anyone to get a B in.
The reviews below are extremely overstated. While the class can be tough, it is not overly challenging. It is entry level financial accounting. She is a very nice lady who responds quickly to emails and answers all your questions. Will get an A in this class pretty easily.
I think her rating is unfair. Most of the student who did poorly on quizzes/tests either didn't show up to class or didn't pay attention to lectures. As long as you take notes and do the practice problems, you'll be fine. She can be condescending (to the class) at times, but she has always been friendly when I go to her with questions.
Overhated. Cheat sheets for exams and quizzes. I got like a 70 on every quiz and still got an A bc she gives so many extra point opportunities. Just do some exercises she provides before quizzes and exams and you'll do really good. also I think she's really nice. I think most negative reviews are people who didn't want to do much work tbh.
Lecture is extremely hard to follow. I had to really train myself to try and understand what was even going on. If you even begin to struggle with accounting topics this class not a good idea.
