Loved her. Rambles a little. Participate. Study. Get an A
Worst professor I've ever had. "Rambles a bit" is such an understatement. She rambles the entire class and then crams the last half/hour relating nothing. Class is run at Junior High level vs a college or even High School level. Entire class(that didnt drop)read ahead and learned on own!Horrid!

Avoid at all costs! You were warned!
It surprised me when I knew that she's going to teach next semester, also. I have to tell people that"She can't be a teacher". She forgets what she said,a class/the way she treats students is depends on her mood of the day.Mean.Impatient. Students can't commounicate with her.
Dishman is one of the best sociology teachers I've ever had. She can be mean, especially if you snooze in her class. She'll throw you out. But if you pay attention, it'll pay off. I learned so much in her class. She really cares about all the students and the future of our society.
Completely committed to teaching/takes it seriously; is intolerant of students who disturb class, don't listen, don't do the work, which I support (if you don't want to be there, she doesn't want you there). I recommend (the bad revus are reprimanded students). If you're serious re soc, take her!
I'm a very serious student, and I had always been wanting to learn, and I showed. I couldn't feel like she was a good teacher. She might be a good speaker but she isn't a good listener. If you are tough or optimistic, you'll be ok with her,but if you have a sensitive personality, don't take her class.
Ms. Dishman is an exceptional professor. She loves her profession & has true dedication to her craft & students. Her teaching style is unique & challenging. She brings to light valuble information & new ways of thinking.I highly recommend her if you want to broaden your mind & challenge your intellect.
She is a great teacher. has high standards for students and wants the best for them. People that dropped out of her class don't deserve A's. People that give up deserve to fail. She bring the problems of society home. and this class really opens your eyes.
do not take her, she doesnt stay on subject. it feels as if im in a history class rather then a Sociology class. can be rude if you ask her a question or answer a question incorrectly. VERY BORING.
Very opinionated, extreme liberal. That's fine if she could keep her opinions to herself and allow the student to make his/her decision. A good teacher should be biased and objective. Should just give you the facts and let you decide on results. She makes you listen to a leftist radio. Not very prof
great professor. Not the most interesting lecturer but gives alternative perspectives. I was glad to know that there are many viewspoints out there. She is very nice and caring (very smart).
Opened my eyes to all that I thought I knew, but really didn't. Challenges the status quo and that's why many students didn't like her. Knows her stuff, not opinions like some stated but real facts which she presents. Makes you question media which is long overdue in this society. Changed my major.
I loved her! Will change your life so be ready! You must read before coming to class but oh so easy and interesting readings! Very intense on the subject matter which can scare closed minded fools and they run off and write bad reviews. I am who I am today-clear, objective, questioning because of he
You must be high if you like this extremely opionated piece of work. You need to be heavily medicated to sit through her incesant rants. God forbid you have a differing opinion than hers! If you absolutley have to take her class, keep your mouth shut and try to remain invisible.
Thought-provoking, analytical class --challenges your assumptions, and make you THINK. Great class. This class is only for those who like to think outside of the box. Professor Dishmann is cool.
I have never heard a professor propagandize quite so obviously as she did. She spends most of her very easy class trying to cram her leftist ideology down the throats of her all-too-willing students. She avoids critical thinking less it show her to a vacuous and mediocre thinker and teacher.
She is ethnocentric and very biased grader. Class can be fairly easy if you suck up. I suggest dont ever voice any opinion differing than hers. If she doesnt like you it will be hard to even get her to meet with you out of class. Very moody, seen her yell at many students. Shes narcissistic and bori
Doesnt teach but manipulates class for her political views. Is not objective & unaccepting of differing opinions on ANYTHING. She is self absorbed & definately has favorites. My friend she liked never read, or even bring pen & paper to class got an A; he thought it was hilarious. Shes BORING
I saw her ratings on this site and noticed they were mixed so I took a chance with the class. I made a mistake. The bad reviews are right. I agree with her political views but she is rude when you ask a question and I did not feel safe to learn.
She has intense feelings about the topic, but her disorganization and narrow view-points may create boredom and irritation inside the classroom that may make you dislike the subject. If you can get by all that and present and share the proper material she asks for, you can get an A.
Very thought provoking. It's great to finally have someone who isn't affraid to teach. I learned so much from this class and had fun through the process.
This teacher is a character. She is passionate about the environment and society. May get on some people's nerves if you are less passive. Overall a class worth taking--may inspire you to get involved in what's going on in our world!
Don't ask (questions, she doesn't get paid out of class). Don't tell (an opinion different than hers). She claimed to have lots of health issues, but one day in class she was having KFC for breakfast, and at the same time we were watching a woman eating rabbits in Moore's "Roger & Me." Our class now associates the smell of KFC with dead rabbits.
Yes, she is left-minded, but despite that she never graded me down for my conservatively based papers. Really opened my eyes to the difference between critique and criticism.
she's very unique. very smart with profound of knowledge. her materials are interesting and eccentric. a little bizarre sometimes. but i learnt a lot from her lecture and study materials. i think she has a world wide vision. we learn to be discreet in class.
WENDY DISHMAN IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS THAT I HAVE EVER HAD. SHE'S DEFINITELY AN INSPIRATION TO THOSE TRUE SOCIOLOGISTS OUT THERE! SHE'S VERY INTERESTING AND SPEAKS THE TRUTH ABOUT CERTAIN SUBJECTS SUCH AS THE NEGATIVE IMPLICATIONS OF GLOBALIZATION, POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS,UNEMPLOYMENT, JUST TO MENTION A FEW OF THE ISSUE THAT WE COVER IN
Doing well in the class is one thing, having your opinions shot down is another. Dishman is a well rounded teacher, but god forbid your views and gender conflict with hers. The films she shows, while interesting, are very left minded and depressing. if you like lectures on her poor health and the end of the world, please, take this class.

Class is not too hard but she teaches her very green views and likes to rant and impose her beliefs on her students which make it unbearable. Doesnt help outside of class and very arrogant. Waste of time, take ANYONE else to make this learning experience worthwhile.
She's disorganized and unfocussed, often late for class (or simply doesn't show up!). If you're a soc major, I suggest you do some work/reading on your own outside of class or you're gonna be lost at a 4-yr university. Or, better yet, take a different professor (though last I looked there was only 1 other professor teaching this course).
not approachable! gets mad easily and very strict! make sure you read all the articles if you take her class.
She is a horrible professor! She has no office hours and will not let you talk to her after class. She is not organized and does not let you express your opinions. It's either her way or no way. Her assignments are unclear and very bias. Don't take her if you want a good grade.
many words given to her bias, rudeness. you concern about your exams and final grade for this course, right? let me tell you the truth: she never let you ask about the exam, seems it's a myth, you feel you didn't learn from her, then she's gonna give you the exam.anyway, taking her class means self-teaching and you even don't what to teach!
Although there are some horrible comments on this site about this amazing teacher- its only because stupid, non-study oriented people are writing them. Her experience makes her better than the rest, and she will teach you things you can walk away wiht in life. she teaches truth, and what matters. You can apply what you learn in everyday life.
She might be busy in between classes, but she will stay after hours(which she is NOT paid for)just to help students understand the material. She is a very intelligent woman, she cares alot about her students learning, and she has very valuable information to share.Dem or Rep-its a good way to learn about the truth behind US politics in relation to soc
She challenges you and when I finished the class at Santa Monica Collecge, I was better grounded in Sociology than when I started. It's excellent preparation for the rigors of UCLA.
She is a really good teacher. When I came to this country I did not know anything about the system, rulls, and how country is running but now I know every thing so that I can even explain to others and answer their questions after several semester. If you do not know english do not be worried she helps you. You can learn everything just in the clas
You'll take her class for a challenge. You will have a chance to share your ideas and focus on the topics of the course instead of recording pages and pages of lecture notes to be regurgitated at a later date. Prof Dishman encourages thoughtful inquiry. After 2 semesters of work with Prof Dishman I feel prepared for the challenges now at Berkeley.
I think she wrote all of those last comments herself. I got an A in the class, but she is a joke. Horrible!

Seems pointless to bash a teacher after recieving an A; seems ****y.Dishman is one of the most interesting teachers I have encountered. She is very honest, which most students interpret as mean/rude.Yet she is neither those, she just wants to convey that understanding is more than knowing what is on a test, it is being present.Students forget that!
Rude? I can see certain students interpreting her manner of talk as rude. However, if you are a student who doesn't take everything personally and can handle a teacher whom is forthright and honest, then take this class. An A is completely achievable. It requires reading and notes. If thats too demanding then youre not ready for university.
My thoughts are mixed. Though I don't feel like my learning time there was necessarily productive, her very opinionated leftist thoughts prompted me to think deeper (but not brainwashed like some). This class was definitely an easy A for me but not for all. Get on her good side by appearing intelligent, intrested, polite, while speaking little.

She is very negative. She took over for Livings(who exited for the rest of the semester), and gave us a vague take-home final in which we were instructed to answer essay questions in a few succinct sentences. Her lectures are replete with random anecdotes and overly opiniated. She is not qualified to teach.
No, thanks. I'd rather not.
This class was HARD, which was unneccessary. The class was difficult because the random tests- multiple choice questions about her thoughts- IMPOSSIBLE to answer correctly. Straight A students struggled. Her attitude towards the students was mean, condescending, & her views were leftist- she did NOT appreciate hearing another view then her own.
While the class was interesting, this professor was extremely opinionated and is difficult to talk to after class, or even during class. If you get on her good side, you will be okay, but either way, this class is not an easy A, and what's worse, you don't come out learning much.
she is very easy if you show effort and participate during class. All you have to do is the readings and when she discusses it, show that your interested and comment. Her tests come out of the lectures.Sit in the front, listen, and show that you care.Thats all you have to do to geth the A. She may seem hard and mean but you got to open up to her and
If you follow directions you will get an A! I learned so much in this easy and clear online class. This teacher really cares about her students and will change your life.
Please don't take her class. She referrs to her syllabus as a "living, breathing" thing so she can make changes and edit it whenever she wants - and she wants students to memorize it at 17 pages (no joke) she cannot spell, has no correct Grammar use, has formatting errors all over the place and simple typos.I took her online class.STUDENTS BEWARE.
I took her class online in the winter for 6 weeks. The tests were from her lectures and book. The work was not too hard but she kept changing her schedule and was not clear with the assignments. When I would ask her a question about the assignements her responses were not helpful. she would jus answer in another question and it got really confusing
She is an awful professor. EXTREMELY unclear on what she wants. When she gives a 50 point essay, she expects you to be able to write a report in 160 words maximum. She spells TERRIBLY making her very unclear. Not helpful, should not be a teacher. Save yourself the irritation of her, find another teacher..ANY other teacher
I took her 8 week online class. Can't spell for her life. Very unclear with her assignments. Makes us keep our 25 and 50 point threads to a maximum of 120 words...wtf how are you supposed to do a assignment of that magnitude in 120 words? Doesn't respond to emails. I don't know how she is a teacher. Take someone else
I'm in the online class so I've never actually met or talked to her. This woman has by far the worst grammar and spelling I have ever seen from a professor. If you can get past semantics, the class is fairly easy.
She is AWFUL. The worst teacher I have ever had - cannot spell or communicate ideas properly, which leads to a class where you are more afraid to break her rules (MANY MANY RULES) than get the work wrong. Never take her.
Wonder about people bashing this Prof, they probably didn?t do well or we?re easily offended. She is excellent! Follow directions, participate and you will do well, kind of like life. She responds to requests for info. Those wanting an A read text, lectures and participate. Short writing assignments, a refreshing challenge of having to fill pages.
I took her winter session online class. I thought she was great. Very helpful, and really want's people to do well - really wanted people to think outside the box on issues and share ideas. I wish she taught more classes. Read the text, and read her notes and it's a super easy class w/ out a ton of work.
Wendy Dishman is the most condescending teacher I've ever had. Her online class was unbearable.
Her online class is a complete joke. Made me swear off online classes forever. If you are the kind of person that likes to read and regurgitate knowledge and waste time, then this is the class for you! But as far as learning is concerned, you won't be doing much of that. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF THE SEMESTER!
If you are a returning student you will likely find the rules and hoops a bit trying. The frequent emails and announcements are degrading and insulting. the course material, however is interesting and the text is fabulous!
Unclear and rude
I liked her a lot. She was extrememly straight forward, and told you exactly what she was looking for - no sugar coating, and not a ton of work. I wish ALL online classes were like hers...Easy A if you just do the work on time, there's word limits so it isnt even all that time consuming. She's great.
Although she is somewhat disorganized and often repeats herself,if you can't get an A in this class it's because you didn't want to.She is very clear in what she expects from you.You have to read the book and shortly respond to the threads,a quiz per chapter per week. She is very helpful and will always respond to questions, just dont ask stupid ones
Unorganized and doesn't present things in a straightforward manner. It's also a bit annoying how she tells her students to use proper grammar and spelling and her lectures and quizzes are riddled with mistakes.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Disorganized, and just full on psychotic. I took her online class. So many typos that it just proves how incapable she is of expressing herself, yet she is constantly pretending like she is an expert at writing.
This woman gets on my nerves! She expects you to write essays in 120 words or less.WTH?She doesn't agree with anything you say.And worst of all she expects you to agree with everything the text books says, you have no choice but to use the text book for FACTS because she said that most students don't know real info from fake.
Difficult personality to learn something like sociology from. Very set in her ideas; not open to anything other than her views. Left of liberal. Scolds her students regularly, even when you're just trying to be nice to her. Ultra critical of the civilized world most of us live in, yet she herself lives in a resort. Beware of her class~
Funny reading these comments bc I'm finishing her online class now & they r 100% right. She's AWFUL. Rude for NO reason. Thinks she knows a lot more than what she really does & u better agree with her ideas! Grammar is TERRIBLE. Perfect that it's online because the less contact with her the better. She's a b***...really. Take Prof. Livings if u can
Professor Dishman is very passionate about what she teaches and you will learn a lot from her. I completely recommend for anyone to take her even if you aren't that interested in Sociology because you will be by the time the class is over! You mainly have to do the work, read the text and you will get the grade that you deserve.
This professor strictly grades on her emotions. The book is great. Her lectures contain enormous amounts of errors grammatical as well as factual. I enjoy school, and learning, this is the most regretful, stressful class I have ever come across! Do your self a huge favor and find another teacher. THIS PROFESSOR WILL DISCOURAGE YOU FROM LEARNING!!!
Anyone who recommends this teacher is out of their minds. She is psychotic and anal about stuff that doesn't even matter. She's almost impossible to reason with. Don't ask any questions because it just pisses her off. The woman is crazy. PLEASE don't take her class. Worst experience at smc yet.
Thanks God she has a forum (online threads)of her own. She has no idea how to hold a forum discussion - but what else would you expect from a left-wing nut job? Yes, you could get an A if you just nod in agreement to every BS she says, but I'd rather have discussions about things where opposing parties respect each other. You won't get them here.
Prof Dishman is a great teacher,do not listen to all these bad reviews they are untrue. These students probably did not follow her directions. To get the grade that you deserve all you have to do is make sure you follow her directions word for word and you will succeed. You definitely will learn alot from this class. She was always willing to help.
Professor Dishman is thoughtful, challenging and interesting. She provoked interesting discussions and always had well thought out opinions about things. I liked this professor a lot, she was fair with students and made people think.
Terrible instructor, I've never seen anyone with worse writing skills. Her lectures and assignment instructions are so poorly written as to be incomprehensible. This class was also ridiculously easy. I spent less than 3 hours a week including reading, and that was on an accelerated Winter session! And no, it's not sour grapes, I got an A.
CANT SPELL, CANT TEACH, CANT DO ANYTHING GOOD BUT WASTE YOUR TIME. I GOT A B BUT VERY CAPABLE OF AN A I JUST DIDNT START WELL. READ = A. LAZY = B. WOW THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE THOUGH >> BEWARE <<
Really weird to read the comments below. This is not a hard class if you put the time to it. So tired of seeing lazy students expecting to get an A doing nothing... 1 quiz every week + answering a thread. Now is that hard? No.. I got a B and happy with it. No one is perfect!
I do not understand all of these comments below. I was intimated by the professor and class at first but she made an online class feel like a real personal interactive class which is hard to do. Everyone one makes mistakes when they have tons of other things on their plate but this professor is passionate about what she teaches and it shows. Inspir
If you want to learn about Sociology then take this course. She challenges students and makes them think like a Sociologist. She made me fall in love with a subject that I never put much thought into. She has done some amazing things throughout her life which is extremely encouraging. Thank you!
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!! This teacher is awful, I have a 4.0 and am a good student, this teacher is rediculous. Doesn't know how to spell, and will base a big part of your grade on what she calls "cooperation" in which she will grade you on how much she likes you. Don't ask questions, it just pisses her off. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Dishman is a nightmare! she has such america-hating, liberal views and will ruin your grade if you don't, saying that you don't stay on topic. you never know why you got the bad grade u did. i worked so so hard reading e/t and i feel like n/t works. took online course-
Dishman is a terrible teacher with a one-sided view on every issue. She does not explain herself well and if she doesn't agree with what you say even if you back it up with facts, she scolds you. She pushes her liberal views without showing the other side of the story. There is no individual thought in this class, only what she wants to hear.
Ms. Dishman's class is informative, interactive and inspiring. My interest was definitely piqued. Sure, she's liberal, but she definitely does NOT penalize her students because of it. The only negative thing I have to say is that she makes A LOT of grammatical errors but scolds her students if they do the same.
The context of this class keeps you interested. The professor...not so much. Not only does she have numerous grammar errors, she's also not very nice when you ask questions. It's easy if you just swallow your pride and be nice to her when she doesn't deserve it, that way, she won't try to get back at you by taking off work points.
Avoid at all costs, seriously. She is boarder-line unbearable. Unclear, rude, and a hypocrite. An A is not impossible but requires a lot of work, decoding her directions, and responding in her point of view. (online class)
Dishman is beyond just a horrible professor. She is a disgrace to teaching. The only way to get a good grade is to think the EXACT same as her. She has no understanding or reasoning for anyone. You can't ask her for help because, "you should know." She believes she is always right and it doesn't matter what you do, you're always wrong.
I can't imagine anyone with a little bit of work ethic disliking Prof. Dishman. Her class was a challenge, and because of that, I walked away having actually learned something.
Very liberal, feminist, does not seem so fond about the U.S. Definitely has spelling errors, quite constant also but she wont correct them and tends to repeat things over and over. Also some days she seems helpful, other days under "stress"; practically spits fire. If you don't agree with her views GL!(Online class)
Professor Dishman is extremely liberal. You will struggle if you're a conservative. I did not agree with everything but sure thought a lot about her position. The textbook is EXCELLENT. Fair amount of work. I studied hard, got an A. I would recomend if you can stand extremely liberal views.
To the people who have discounted Dishman as a "liberal" and "UnAmerican": if you are so attached to your corporate-sponsored "news" that you think it is "unamerican" to question/understand our society by observing it from a broad perspective, then you have completely missed the point of the class....and the concept of being American.
I am hardcore lefty, and I got an 'A' in this class, it was so easy, I did agree with her views on most everything, but she does make the class easier if you are liberal. She just is not a very good professor. Her spelling is sooo bad ( online class) and she is always right, likes to think she is smarter and better than all of her students.
Easiest sociology class taken. I took this class online and got an A just by reading the book, doing decent on the quizzes and answering the discussion boards. No big papers and strict word counts make assignments a lot easier to complete. Just follow her directions and you will get an A.
The professor is almost incomprehensible. There were tons of spelling and grammatical mistakes in the course materials. The class is taught in a very biased way leaning to the far left wing of politics.
This professor is a mouthpiece for far-left America that gets her talking points from the likes of MSNBC, huffingtonpost, democracynow, and a variety of other liberal extremist websites. Her lectures ooze lefty bias and are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors (online course) while she touts the importance of sophisticated writing. Avoid.
how did this professor graduate college? She writes like an illiterate. You can tell which comments she wrote herself. They are full of run on sentences, grammar and spelling errors. she tells students to keep their essays under 120 words, but she has directions that are literally 7 pages long. She is what's wrong with the u.s. education syste
STOP! YOU WILL REGRET THIS! SHE IS VERY RUDE, AND HONESTLY MAKES HER STUDENTS FEEL DUMB! told us the week of that we have a project, midterm, quiz, and other things to do.Like her class is all we have! If my comment doesn't stop you, then I hope the rest of them will. I guarantee the "good stuff" written about her, she wrote them! Upside;classbook!
I loved this class! You can tell the professor is really passionate about Sociology... There is a 120 word limit on ALL assignments which is great for people on a time crunch. Chapter quizzes every Monday. She does not use examguard! So you can look at the text book or google answers during the timed quizzes.
Professor Dishman is totally passionate about sociology. Whomever said she sprung surprise assignments is blaming her for their own irresponsibility- she went out of her way to remind everyone constantly of upcoming assignments, not to mention YOU RECEIVE A SYLLABUS. She is great and I highly recommend her.
What a nightmare. I took her online Soc 1 class, and while she does have a syllabus, it is nearly 30 pages long. Lots of busy work and grades are never posted by her own 2wk limit. She is pedantic without reason and believes in "thinking sociologically", which is just her stating her own opinion, which she is indeed passionate about.
Prof Dishman is a wonderful teacher! I took her online class. If you make sure to read everything THOROUGHLY then you will be fine. We are in college & she teaches a college-level course so it's not a cake walk. However, it isn't that hard to get an A she just wants to push you towards critical thinking. Oh and, Read the textbook!
Don't listen to some of these people. This class is easy and straightforward. Compared to other online classes Dishman is very invested in the course, and cares about the material. Just read the book, and post your weekly assignment, and you'll get and A!
You will regret taking this class. This professor is horrible and she ruined the fun of sociology for me.
This teacher has not been in a classroom in a long time and its OBVIOUS. She is extremely disorganized, her lectures are boring and she talk about everything except sociology. Her tests ALWAYS have mistakes and her questions are hard to understand. It was a drag going to that class and I usually like learning.
This woman ruined my GPA. I do not know how she got her masters degree because she's constantly making simple grammar mistakes. She expects you to participate, yet if your answer is wrong she humiliates you in front of the whole classroom. Do NOT take her under ANY circumstances, even if you need to stay in college an extra year
Just awful. I signed up for her SOCIO1 online class & she would send out MASS emails - I got 20 emails, OF THE SAME EMAIL - with terrible grammar mistakes. I was constantly confused with her instructions telling us to do something that was mandatory, but wouldn't be available online for you to do. I'm glad I dropped. Not worth the stress.
Good professor. If you do the work, you will be fine and learn a lot in the process
She is the best professor I've had! The class itself is extremely hard, but that's because she has high expectations that she is more than willing to help you achieve. Always open to differing views and discussing them (if time permits), her class expands the mind of every student in it! This class is a life-changer, because of the professor.
I took Sociology 1 online with Professor Dishman over Summer semester. As long as you do the reading, the writing assignments are very easy she doesn't have a formal midterm or final! Professor Dishman was very accessible and helpful online as well.
Professor Dishman is an extraordinary educator. She incorporates many of her own experiences to her lectures, as a result of making the material more comprehensive and memorable. Her insatiable desire for knowledge is contagious; in her class, your imagination and curiosity will soar.
I took her online class. Her grammar and writing style is very hard to UNDERSTAND what she is ACTUALLY trying to say. Her vocabulary usage is often flawed, the grading scale isn't clear, and she cannot handle the large amount of students she has in her online course. Intelligence gets you nowhere in this class, it's just based on chance.
Don't even think about it. You can tell that the "good" comments she wrote herself. Every time I think of this class I start hyperventilating, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE professor. Too old to teach, does NOT have patience. Just stay away... Trust.
What a terrible teacher. She is the worst. Her online Sociology class is boring and does not engage the students. STAY AWAY!!!!
Absolutely AWFUL! Inconsistent, rude, and disorganized. Pesters students about good grammar, yet she makes elementary mistakes constantly! All quiz questions are confusing. Her grading system is horribly inconsistent. DO NOT TAKE HER! Can't believe I spent my summer trying to get a good grade from her, when it was a useless effort.
I wasn't aware a syllabus could be written rudely until now. Inaccurate spelling/grammar issues coupled with incessant, haranguing emails a week into semester. One appeared to be sent to me personally about why I haven't read the syllabus-just added the class on Saturday. Afraid for my 4.0 with this class. Hope SMC reads these and audits the class.
Nice class, the professor is good in teaching the material, but sometimes she appears to be rude. She interacts with students a lot
BORING, BAD grammar, and asks students to write 120 word essays explaining detailed concepts (that's not an ESSAY it's a paragraph). She has a large online class size that she can't even handle and tells students to limit their words. Rude, doesn't understand basic English on discussions, and VERY unhelpful. Will criticize before helping you.
Professor Dishman is not only the rudest professor I've ever had but by far the least helpful in almost all regards. Her "120 word maximum" essays are merely a way for her to do less work. I hope she reads these posts and begins to realize that maybe its not the hundreds of students that are wrong but in actuality she who needs to change
All I can tell you is, Don't waste your time with her class. Not very helpful. She is very rude. She sends thousand emails everyday. She does not know what she teaches. She is confused all the time, targets people picks on people randomly. Her lecture is boring. Her goal is not to teach or encourage but give you stress dissappointment.
Bad very bad.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. The course is incredibly confusing and she makes it incredibly difficult to navigate the online material and even ask questions about it. The material itself is easy but she makes it incredibly complicated. Do yourself a favor and take this course with a different professor.
Prior to her class I was horrified at the reviews here. I took the risk and: Everything said here is more or less true. BUT if you ignore her personality - rude, confusing long unnecessary instructions, one sided opinions, some quiz questions based on her life - than you should take it because it's a fairly easy A and that's ALL I care about.
First of all: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! It is a class where you really have to think, but study the book and her lectures (ok they are a little confusing) and you'll be fine. Be objective in the discussions, social essay is kinda hard. Ask if you do not know, can be a little condescending but explain why you don't know something and she'll help!
Winter session. Passed most work with A. 2 chapters each week & had to write one 120 word thread for each chapter, then take 20 min tests on them. No midterm but "social essay" also 120 words it was EASY! Final is just like the 20 min test. Read book & lecture take notes u should get an A. Annoying thing was "KWT"- not graded but mandatory.
The class is summer school so there is a LOT of info packed into six weeks. She is helpful, knowledgeable and has passion for the subject and teaching.
Challenges your critical thinking
WISH I WOULD HAVE LISTENED TO THE POOR REVIEWS AND GOT THE NEXT TEACHER. Rude and gives no feed back!!!!
Gives no feedback on your work. Only if you passed the assignment or not. I
She was not very helpful. Her directions were unclear. She was very sarcastic and rude and that is unnecessary.
Horrible human being. Very sarcastic comments.
Really interesting class with a very simple format. Unfortunately some of that gets lost in her overcrowding of unnecessary information (and spelling errors), however if you have any common sense this is not an issue. Read the chapter, respond to a discussion, take a quiz. Easy A!
Professor Dishman is clearly passionate about Sociology. She thrives to teach students how to adopt a sociological perspective and creates lessons which are engaging. She is constructive with her criticisms, but never harsh so stop hating y'all. Loved this class, first time taking anything online.
Convoluted, overwhelming. Her instructions are overly volumous and confusing, she changes things last minute and constantly contradicts herself. Expect a lot of unnecessary, distracting emails IN ALL CAPS. Be meticulous about reading the directions and syllabus. She expects you to read her mind.
Professor Dishman's quizzes are straightforward and easy points if you do the readings, so get the textbook, complete her study guides and participate in discussions. Her Key Word Threads are another easy way to get points BUT beware of her 120 word discussion threads. Although she gives you feedback, it's very vague. Interesting class.
Demands perfect spelling and grammar but presents neither. Demands clarity and succinctness but her instructions are highly convoluted and redundant. Lectures are mostly regurgitations of lectures from previous classes. Requests for aid/clarification are met with variations of "what do you think?" You basically end up teaching yourself.
I really don't know where all the negative reviews are coming from. The quizzes were not the easiest because some of the questions were from the lecture and involved critical thinking. The class is VERY straightforward. Two discussions and two quizzes every week. Sure she has spelling errors but so what? She also will bump you to the next grade!
One of best professors I've had at SMC. Well, at least online. I don't know why she has such low ratings. Read the instructions carefully, do your book/lecture readings, and you'll be fine. I'll just end this by saying that I completed most of her online assignments with only minutes to spare ( my choice) and still got an A. Take. this. class.
I enjoyed taking the course online. Ms. Dishman is very strict about participation every week- that's how she takes attendance by having students define a word from the lecture or textbook. I passed with a C due to not understanding some of the questions on tests or quizzes. Just read the lecture/textbook! READ THE SYLLABUS!
Her communications are extremely repetitive of mundane info, uses pretentious, awkward, confusing phrasing. Tests a lot and is extremely specific. Questions on concepts that weren't directly address . Refers to the text using inaccurate terminology. Demands that we make arguments based only on limited text/lecture, which has limited perspective.
Honestly I loved her she is the nicest lady and is amazing. I took her for Sociology 1 online and her outline for everything was great! She gives you plenty of time to complete her work and is my favorite teacher so far!!! Highly recommend taking her class
You will be traumatized! She has no patience. She hates students, teaching and life in general! The only feedback you will get is criticizing if you ask her any questions. She does not teach, you will be reading a lot of garbage that she probably wrote decades ago and then will be expected to take a difficult quiz. Made me hate sociology.
This class was a fairly easy A. I took it online and the grading criteria was kind of difficult to understand what she was asking for at times. She does not live near campus so don't expect to meet with her. She has a 120 word count limit for everything, which is nice but also difficult at times and she will mark you down if you go over.
Very difficult for a sociology class! Got a C, but definitely felt if I taken a different professor in person I would easily get a B or A. Takes forever to post assignments; when posting it she sometimes posts it on the due date. NO TIME AT ALL WITH QUIZZES. She gives 2 quizzes due and the end of the week. 20 questions 20 minutes. Very difficult.
Honestly, not a bad prof or course. Just make sure that you ACTUALLY read the chapters and her lectures. The work isn't hard, just two quizzes each week on two chapters and two 120 discussions. I would say it took 8 hours max out of my week each week. I didn't study for the final at all and got a 27/30, but I did read everything.
I've been in this class for only a week and the repetitive emails containing convoluted information regarding assignments and their due dates are annoying and constant. Also, any information she posts looks like it was copied from a Word doc in 1999, her formatting and spelling errors abound, but holds you to a higher standard, of course.
Professor Dishman is FANTASTIC! The material in the class is topical and interesting. I took this class online and she gives great feedback on discussions and assignments. Do the reading, participate in class discussions and you will do well. There is a quiz on every chapter. Midterm and final are multiple choice questions.
Her quizzes are messy, often repeated questions with one or two word differences that she blames on the computer system but it's clear they were entered twice. Her "email form" is confusing and she wont respond unless you use it. She's set in her ways but she is intelligent & has cool points of view, although it can be hard to understand at times.
Professor Dishman has a very clear grading criteria. If you read the book & lectures & participate in the discussions, you should get a high grade. Quizzes are super easy if you read both the book & lecture. I took this as an online class & it's efficient & easy
She means well, but she gives so much work and doesnt really care about how your mental health is. I emailed her once about a quiz and she provided a page length explanation about how i should refer to the syllabus... it was dumb. If you dont want a headache then dont take her
I really enjoyed this class!
I enjoyed Ms. Dishman's class very much. It was well-organized and easy to follow. She was always stimulating. Students have to be prepared to read a lot and to think a lot. The class helped me understand many of today's difficult issues in new ways. I highly recommend her class -- yeah!
Just do your readings and participate in weekly discussions and you will pass her quizzes on the chapters of the week. She drops the lowest quiz and discussion towards the end of the course. Good luck!
I don't understand where the negative reviews are coming from. I took Professor Dishman's class for winter semester and I loved her class. It's very informative and she helps you think outside the box. Just keep up with your readings both textbook and lecture and make sure to participate in the weekly discussions and you'll do fine on the quizzes.
Dishman likes things only her way. She has extremely specific expectations but she does a bad job of converting them to students. Spell something wrong? you'll lose points. Email her without using her email template? She won't respond. She's hard to communicate with, does not answer questions, and will constantly tell you to refer to the syllabus.
Free book online, chapter readings and lecture readings! and sometimes videos, all very informative, and interesting, and will ALL be on exams/quizzes, so read everything. Critical thinking is a must 2 discussions weekly (120 word limit)She was very considerate of the pandemic. She's very smart, and has a clear format just make sure to follow it!!
"I really enjoyed Ms. Dishman's class, you learn things you never knew about. She will help you understand so many things. If you pay attention and care, you can get an A."
Absolutely horrible. By far the MOST unorganized professor I've ever seen try to conduct class online. Way too many discussions, she always contradicts her own rules. On the bright side, she does give good feedback and is somewhat a good instructor but she's honestly a handful. Choose literally any other instructor.
I don't even know where to start with this lady. She is by far the RUDEST &most ridiculous person I have ever encountered. Her class is formatted horribly, the content isn't very inviting, & the textbook was pointless. Her quizzes are lengthy & your grade is basically based off of them. Emails you back an entire page for a simple question.
The way that her lectures and discussions are written comes off as very unorganized. She makes it hard to contact her with the specific email format and she makes people type no more than 120 words for discussion posts. She isn't clear with answering questions either. If you have a learning disability, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I regret taking her.
A great course and so timely. Do your work and you'll do fine. Good feedback. Discussions are interesting. Not all reading and writing, though. Use is made of films and videos. Happy I took the course. Wish I COULD take it again.
I gave her the benefit of the doubt and ignored the negative reviews should not have done so. She sets an impossible standard to meet to get full credit. If you take this class don't let it discourage you from sociology, sociology is a great and its fun. Have taken other socio courses and every single professor has been amazing, except her.
One of the most Bias teachers I've ever experienced... For a sociology teacher, she doesn't seem to be a critical thinker or question the mainstream narrative at all. Very strange!
She is very smart and tries very hard. Ive never left a review for a teacher but I have a very high GPA and average an A- in all the classes Ive taken. This class has impossibly difficult work load in the winter intercession. She is an impossibly hard grader and its her way of the highway. I hated learning in this class.
This class was honestly hard for me to take I had to drop it! Her guidelines to assignments are not organized well and I couldn't seem to understand the assignments. LOADS of reading her lectures are very long. It felt like there was never really clear instructions on the concept of the assignments.
The professor creates a great introduction to Sociology. I learned a lot and became more interested in the field. Even if one does not aim to become a sociologist, the class provides you with skills to better understand society and the world. I would definitely take another of Professor Dishman's classes.
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this class, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. Professor Wendy taught at UCLA and Cal States so expect quality education. Thought provoking. Eye-opener. Highly recommend. Take the class serious, read the materials, and participate; and you will thank yourself at the end. **hands down** Ms. Dishman is an amazing instructor.
Professor Dishman teaches a thought-provoking Sociology course. While the workload can be heavy, engaging with the material and using study aids like unstuck study pays off. The class provides valuable insights, though organization could be improved.
1. Lengthy and unorganized assignment instructions 2. Falsely accused me of using AI
