"Wendy" is an intelligent, kind, approachable teacher who makes class as interesting as possible. She has high expectations for all written assignments (which comprises most of students' marks). She likes group work and incorporating different mediums (ie. music, film). Very enjoyable class (for English fans) but it's not a walk in the park!
She is a tough marker, but makes the class interesting and really strives for you to work on your writing skills.
The content of this course - Madness in Women's Writing - was amazing! Dr. Faith is intelligent, patient, and very organized.
"Dr.Faith" is an amazing prof. She is well-organized, intelligent, positive, helpful, and encouraging. Her teaching methods are clear and understandable. She is a tough marker of essays but she is available and encouraging to help her students succeed.
I took her "Madness in Women's Writing" course. She's a new prof to the UofL but I was very happy with her course. She encourages a lot of class discussion. She is a tough essay marker though... absolutely rips apart your writing (and I'm a good essay writer!). Her final is tricky as well, but over all a very friendly, intelligent, accessible prof.
Very nice lady. Tough essay marker, but I didn't expect it to be easy. My only complaint about the course was the content we covered. I wasn't a fan of the novel or short stories at all.
One of my favourite profs. She is tough marker on essays, but she's more liberal on the final exam. Once you get passed the essay, the class is a blast. The class load is fairly light and there are occasional group work assignments (its just for participation). She's charismatic, laughs a lot and manages to keep the class interesting.
This class inspired deep thinking and the content was interesting. I also throughly enjoyed our class discussions. For a three-hour class, the time went by really quickly.
Portrayals of Madness in Women's Writing- really interesting, the material seemed simple and the prof was very frank and precise in the lectures. The papers however had a much higher standard. Mine was ripped apart, it taught me how to write an english paper. Class seems easy but it is not, an understanding of the material is not enough to get an A
Keeps class fairly entertaining and goes over most stuff you should know for tests. Pretty hard marker on essays. Make sure to write down what is on the slides.
Wendy is a beautiful person. She is a pleasure to listen to, and is very kind to her students. Her class was very personal, and you knew everyone's name in the class. She is a tough marker, but wants her students to do well so she gives lots of feedback on how you can improve. I would reccommend any of her classes.
Her teaching style is easy to follow and she's not all about lectures. But she's a Nazi when it comes to marking and attendance.
Wendy was always very well prepared and clear in her instruction. Her personality and sense of humour made the class more enjoyable. I also appreciated that she had several due dates for the research paper. I will definitely take more classes from her.
Wendy is one of the best profs I have ever had. She is very helpful, keeps the class interesting, has a wonderful sense of humor, and always makes you think about things critically. She is a very tough marker but she is a fair marker. I would take another class from her for sure!!
I didn't find her to be a great prof. She is an extremely hard marker and her tests are quite hard. Attendance is a must since she takes attendance. I found her to be very boring and not interesting at all.
If you're a slackard who's looking for easy marks and doesnt like to be challenged, then yeah, don't take her classes. Personally, I think she's terrific (and this is my 2nd class with her).
Dr. Faith is a genuinely nice person who keeps the class interesting. She is a tough marker, but she's fair. She taught me how to write a University essay, and I'm grateful for that.
Turn your paper in on the earliest date and you'll get incredible feedback! Wendy made the cousre super interesting and the final exam was reasonable.
Wendy is a true GEM of a professor. Her brilliance shines through her lessons and she's always challenging her students' critical analysis. Expect lots of valuable discussion. Her classes are informative, interesting, and challenging. Her writing expectations are high, but teach you how to write better. Fabulous teacher, scholar, and person!
Wendy is a great teacher. She is helpful and offers awesome feedback. That being said she is a very challenging marker. Class averages are usually in the 65% range. 1900 is an interesting course and is worthwhile, but if you need to keep a high GPA be very careful. Great prof though and a wonderful person. Funny lady, definitely an ex-hippy.
OMG. Hardest class in the world. She is a crazy hard marker...That being said, one of the most useful and progressive classes I have ever taken. My writing improved by 100x. Not a gpa booster. But, extremely helpful in the long run.
She is a super hard marker-but it helps you improve a lot. I love going to class-she makes it so enjoyable and I hated English in high school!
Dr Faith is an artistic, floaty professor. She teaches with numerous styles using video and music as well as the written word. Her readings are mostly contemporary, and she is passionate about interpretation, so close readings are empirical! The marking scheme is really hard, and she can be punctilious. The class is fair, and will teach you much.
Even though it was a tough class, it was still my favourite of the semester. Absolutely loved the material. Prof expected a lot by way of analysis but she was clear and organized, which did make it easier to study. Seemed to mark easier on the final than course work.
I was so worried after I got the grade for my first paper, but when I went to see her, she REALLY helped me! If you want to learn how to write better, she'll go the extra mile for you. I'm doing better on all my university papers now.
Artsy, warm, funny. Great lady. Liked her choice of literature, too.
Passionate teaching style, and from beginning to end, extremely well organized. It was a joy to go to class!
If you get her quirky sense of humour, you'll find her hilarious. This class was not only fun but interesting and informative. She is a bit of tough marker, though.
Very tough essay marker but awesome class! Light workload. She is a very intelligent person. Got to listen to bob Dylan, audioslave, and read Dickinson and watch a movie. It was the only class I didn't hate going to this semester.
the prof has one poetry explication throughout the semester and she is a hard marker, if you got 90s in high school on essays your looking at 70s in this class but overall a ver underated teacher in our university
We had to write two writing assignments in class plus hand in one poetry essay to Turnit.com. She is hard, but I've learned more about writing in her class than from any others. Excellent teacher!
She is by far the best prof I have ever had. While yes, her exams and marking schemes are difficult, she is willing to go out of her way to help you out! Probably the nicest, and most interesting teacher by far! You can just tell she was a hippie kind of kid, and it is awesome!
Definitely my favorite prof. I look forward to class, she's interesting and funny. Tough marker and there are pop quizzes/writing tests but as long as you review your notes, you should be fine. I definitely recommend her
Controversial topics and exceptionally honest and open-minded prof. Also a good historical overview of rhetoric. Highly recommend!
Rhetoric was great. Faith is awesome and this class is a good option for people who don't share her taste in lit.
Rhetoric. A very hard marker, but you will learn so much from W. Faith! A fun and engaging class, interspersed with occasional video and audio. Lots of student and group presentations on lots of fun topics. A very warm personality (and warns us when she's grouchy). Allows for extensive class participation, takes student interaction seriously.
Awesome! Wendy came off as a very laid back, personality-wise. However, she is serious about teaching. If you have a desire to learn about English literature and become a better writer this is your kind of prof.
I found her to be slightly judgmental towards student comments in class. She wasn't my style of professor, but I would not deny that she is decent. The material was repetitive, but not boring.
Very interesting material, and Wendy is great with class discussion. She encourages participation and is very open to different viewpoints. Overall I loved this class!(I just wish she'd lighten up on the grammar).
Awesome class discussions about serious issues, like the ethics and rhetoric of slave literature. But Wendy has the craziest sense of humour, too. Love her!
Incredibly hard marker. Will mark your essay as incorrect if it isn't her interpretation. Really takes the beauty of language and destroys it. She dissects english to the point where it is no longer enjoyable. If you need this class for more important things, get a different professor.
I enjoyed this class. Wendy is a very approachable teacher, down to earth. She has high standards but you'll learn a lot. I recommend her!
So lovely! The most interesting and quirky prof I've met! She makes the material relevant and really makes you care about what you're learning even if you wouldn't usually be interested in the material. Tough marker but willing to give advice and guidance and you really feel that you've earned your mark when you're done. I highley recommend her!!
I love Wendy. She is quirky and very, very sharp.Classes are animated and involved Work hard, speak up, dont be afraid to voice your opinion and she will love you. She is a very caring proff. Not to mention she isnt all that hard on the eyes either. Hands down I would recommend her to anyone.
Wendy is the worst prof I've had so far. I found her to be incredibly boring, and just plain weird. She was so anal about stupid things, and she uses the worst books! It was not an enjoyable class at all.
So smart, so funny, so interesting! I took this course last year and have recommended it to many of my friends. They ALL like Wendy too. If you pay attention and work hard, you'll find her teaching style to be very rewarding.
Wendy is one of my fav profs ever. She is insightful, clever and does an excellent job at engaging students. Class presentations were fairly easy marks but the tests can be tough. Gotta memorize and apply concepts. I recently failed the midterm but still think this prof is fantastic... and sexy.
Very clear on what is required in university. Coming from high school my writing greatly improved just from her class word. As an English major I totally suggest Wendy's class!!
eng 1900 the material used in the class is sooooooo boring and sooooo disturbing! choice of textbook and material can drive a person to depression! she looks very sweet and is a nice person but she chooses to teach all kinds of depressing and sad poetry. no matter what you write she will find a way to criticize it! DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS...
Ridiculous marker, way too anal, incredibly unclear expectations. Takes a lot of marks off for silly things like disliking a certain word. The class is fun, and if you have no university writing background then go for it, but if you're a higher-level English major who already has your own writing style, she'll tear you apart for no good reason.
I took 1900 with her last semester and I'm in 2300 now because I liked her so much. She's an AMAZING prof who challenged me to become a better writer and a better thinker. I started with a D+ and ended up with a B. She doesn't suck up to the students, though, and she doesn't put up with any sh**. Still a very warm and caring prof.
Faith has the most twisted sense of humour. She's hilarious! Kept me interested from beginning to end. Fair marker and a super genuine person. Her exams are based on lectures, and she gives hints so listen carefully. She'll also tell you exactly what she wants on essays. Go to class, pay attention, and you'll do fine.
Another great class from Prof. Faith, the department's strongest instructor. Class discussion was always excellent and well facilitated. Assignments were a nice change from the usual English essay.
Wendy is an absolute gem. She forever amuses and teaches you how to write an exceptional paper. Her content is usually interesting, and she will help you if you ask.
Wendy Faith is the worst profesor I have ever had. The most condescending person I have ever met! Very hard marker, her way or the highway.
I did very well in the courses I took from her, and I thought she was really easy to get along with. You should try to learn from your professors. There's a reason they're teaching the class and you're not.
Enlightening, challenging, useful, and even fun on occasion. Loved the many comments on my papers and exams. Thanks for another great class Wendy!
My worst class this semester. I used to like English until University level english. Ended up switching my minor from English to Science after this. If you are a creative writer and like to use descriptive words and adjectives, beware wordiness. She is also harsh in her marking comments.
she rocks
As an Education major, I totally recommend Wendy's class. Her exercises in class are fun and creative but she also shows you how to deeply analyze speeches and poems. It's a challenging class, and you have to work hard, but very rewarding by the end.
Faith is a great prof, but not an easy marker. Atttending class is very beneficial because she gives away many hints and ideas on the literature that is obvious to use for the final. Wendy always makes class interesting and is really young at heart!
Hilarious, passionate and extremely knowledgeable!! I highly recommend any of Faiths classes!! I wish she offered more!!
Great Professor if you're willing to put the time into her class. Material was interesting. Beware of wordiness and grammar errors in her class or it will not end well for you. Great class to take in the summer.
She is quite sincere and very open to discussion. She requires a lot from her students. She is a very strict marker. For example, she will never give out %100. The level of quality required feels much higher than a first year English class. I liked her but this class seriously hurt my GPA.
She makes the class more enjoyable than English ever should be. Tells you what she wants and marks based on that. Hard at the start but gets easier as the course goes on.
Wendy is an excellent prof. Very helpful and friendly. She tells you exactly what she expects on assignments and exams. However she does mark pretty hard and places a lot of emphasis on making sure you aren't wordy.
She's an alright prof, but not my style of teacher. She enjoys class discussions on controversial topics, and isn't afraid to pick on the less vocal students. She isn't clear on what she expects on exams, which makes them difficult to study for. Lots of regurgitating info, so if you're good at that you should do alright.
Wendy is an extremely difficult marker and puts a lot of emphasis on minimizing wordiness, topic sentences, and thesis statements. Although she's challenging, she will shape you up for your next classes! I learned a lot from her and don't regret taking the course with her despite my not-so-great mark!
One of my favorite classes of all time. Even though some of the theory was a little dry, Wendy always livened it up with creative exercises. She's a very passionate and engaging prof. I honestly never thought metaphor could be so interesting.
I would not recommend this class for anyone not interested in poems. We analyzed poems in great depth and Wendy had very high expectations for assignments and papers. She is a very difficult marker, and I found her requirements for papers to be extremely specific. She doesn't post any notes online and expects you to attend all of the lectures.
I loved her class, but she is quite a tough marker and gives out multiple presentation projects, so if you don't like public speaking, would NOT recommend.
Dr. Faith is great! Her classes are interesting and she is very positive and happy--an excellent quality in a teacher! This class doesn't require a lot of writing but you do have to present speeches in front of the class. A VERY interesting and useful class! Highly recommended!
She knows her stuff and expects you to know it too. Her assignments are difficult but have a very structured outline. If you approach her she will help you quite a bit and manages to make her classes very interesting, you can tell she cares about what she's teaching. No notes are posted online.
She is encouraging when you comment in class, makes difficult concepts easy to understand and is an engaging lecturer. She put a lot of work into helping students with grammar, building a thesis and showing you how to analyze poems and stories. Going to class is essential, and class discussions are a big part of the course not for marks though.
Quality over quantity. This is true for the assignments and the required readings. Know that and you will do well. She can be a very tough marker but she tells you exactly what she wants. She is kind, refreshingly engaging and helpful. Would absolutely recommend to improve the quality and structure of your writing.
Despite what I've heard of her 1900 classes, she was surprisingly laid back and fun during her lectures. Expect group work and public speaking. She's a tough marker, but her expectations are clear and she makes the material as simple and easy to process as possible.
Her class is extremely tough and if I didn't need this to get into education I would have dropped it. Hardest B of my life!!
Excellent Prof! Wendy makes English somewhat fun! She is challenging and yet very fair. I learned more in her class than any other post secondary course! Great Prof!
I didn't do well in this class, would not take again. Lots of group work, reading, and memorizing her book. Tests were very difficult, class was much too hard for first year english.
Wendy is a spectacular professor. She's got a very laid-back, hippie attitude, but not when it comes to writing. She has a strong focus on quality and stresses conciseness, but she is always willing to help you improve. She chooses great material (incl. music) to explicate. Wendy is very kind and dedicated - you will not regret being in her class.
I was really enjoying her Modernism course. The theory she gave us was incredible! I've heard that she's ill and unfortunately can't continue. Her replacement is fine, but the course is going in a different direction now. I was especially interested in her thoughts on the theory/history of surrealism and cubism. Hope to see her back soon!
Before I took this class, a lot of people told me that Dr. Faith is the worst teacher ever. Well, Dr. Faith is by far one of my favourite prof. The speeches she assigns has improved my public speaking ability. She is a tough grader, but, I mean, who isn't? Just be prepared to work hard. I would definitely take more classes with her. Love her!!
Tests included material that was not relevant and not focused on in class. Little details were expected to be memorized. Should writing not be of more emphasis? If I wanted to memorize, I would take an anatomy course.
She gives great lectures, but the tests are tough, and she marks the papers really hard.
Loved this class!
Wendy is an amazing professor. She is a difficult marker when it comes to written assignments, but she tells you exactly what she wants. She believes that words should be chosen for a reason. Nothing superfluous. This is exemplified in her choice of poetry and reading. Overall, work hard. She is very dedicated to helping students.
Wendy is a fantastic prof. Take good notes, do all your readings and don't skip classes, and you will have great success. She is great at drawing out participation, which makes classes fun and fascinating. The readings are very interesting and prompt you to think deeply. Wendy is accessible and respectful to her students, which makes them love her.
She was my first English prof at the U of L and I am on my way to taking another class with her. She is really passionate about her work and she knows what she's talking about. She gives work back at a timely fashion, and it is really important to attend class. She has specific criteria and do's and don'ts, but if you follow them, you're golden! :)
Dr. Faith's exams are hard but this is a class you do not want to miss. It is informative and absolutely entertaining. She is a tough grader because she is really concerned with wordiness and the use of the passive voice but I promise you, you will not regret taking her class!
Wendy is extraordinary! There's a solid base in theory throughout the course, but it's necessary. She does a good job of keeping the class engaged and interested. This class pushes boundaries, so keep an open mind. Overall, one of the best courses ( and best professors ) I've had. She's very helpful, and brilliant, take anything you can with her!
If English isn't your strong suit, you definitely will struggle quite a bit.
I absolutely adore wendy, she is a great prof! I had her for both intro and now american slave narrative and have never had a problem with her. She's funny, her lectures are very interesting, and she always can't figure out the computer stuff. She gives great feedback, overall an awesome prof
Goes through lecture material very quickly, won't repeat herself or post lecture slides, and then tests very heavily on the finest details. Very helpful one on one, but you'll have to catch her after class because you won't find her in her office. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you won't pass if you don't go to class.
bit of a tough grader, and you need to work hard for a good grade. But I loved Wendy! I felt comfortable in her class right away. She's cool, I would happily take another course from her.
Wendy is extremely intelligent, but expects way too much for first year English. She is such a tough grader and the smallest mistakes can be detrimental to your grade. In addition, English 1900 was more of a history class that you won't really be tested on.
Dr. Faith is a tough grader but she's fair. I loved her lectures and Its the first time I've ever been interested in poetry. She also gave great feedback on the poetry papers. I don't need another English class but if I did, I'd take it from her.
Wendy is an amazing professor, best Engl. prof I've had. Be ready for lots of group discussions, responses, and projects. She is a fair marker; put in some effort, and your grade will reflect it. She is very tough on proper grammar and form in written work. She is funny, approachable, and makes you feel comfortable in class and to speak in class.
Wendy is probably the worst prof I'd had to date. She is very arrogant when it comes to marking, with condescending remarks on papers. She doesn't post the slides, so you have to write down everything she has on the board, plus everything she says. Would not recommend.
I love Wendy! This is my 3rd class with her, and even though her expectations are high, they're clear and consistent. She's relaxed and funny in class and her lectures are always interesting!
she's so nice and very intelligent. she is such a hard marker tho and on the littlest things. hated english from the start but she made me have some interest. when it comes to tests and essays though it's hard to like the class...
Wendy is quite nice, and very intelligent - almost too smart to be teaching an intro class. Your grade is mainly based off of quizzes and papers, but she marks VERY hard. Most of what was previously learned in HS english is incorrect in her class, so you must relearn the basics to do decent. She doesn't use moodle, so attendance is necessary.
Great professor and great class. Clear grading criteria, and it was really easy to do well in her class, if you put in the effort and paid attention to detail. She's very open minded and likes many different perspectives. Really good class for anyone who hates public speaking
Wendy is an okay professor. Lecutres clearly had a lot of effort put into them. The content of the course was super interesting, though was very poetry heavy. Wendy is a hard grader though; she cares about grammar as much as she does content and considers small mistakes to be "major grammatical errors". I was constantly studying for this course.
I really liked Wendy! I learned alot about grammar and the lectures on the poems and novel were terrific. Great sense of humour also!
If you don't like heavy lectures and group projects, I wouldn't recommend Wendy. Otherwise she is wonderful. She leads some absolutely amazing discussions and she gives very clear grading criteria. She is very accessible outside of class. She is very funny and as long as you realize her personality quickly, she can be amazing.
Wendy is one of my favourite Profs. Her lectures are heavy but she gives a clear grading scheme. She is caring and very passionate about her studies. I would recommend taking a class with Wendy!
By far, my favourite English class! Wendy is intelligent, her teaching methods and class exercises are creative, and she works hard to give her students the best feedback!
If you aren't into strict profs, then she is not for you (not going to lie, I was a little terrified). That being said, she is really passionate about English AND teaching. If you go to her with determination of getting good grades she will do her best to help you achieve it.
To get a good grade in her class, make sure you participate. That can be the difference between passing and failing her class! Make yourself noticeable to her and she will have no issue with you. A few group projects, make sure you put effort in as a lot of your final mark is dependent upon your groups review on you. tough grader, isnt too helpful
Wendy's passionate about English and she wants you to be too. Her lectures and class discussion have been really interesting. She marks fairly hard but she made me up my game! I would take a class from her again.
Wendy is a great professor and extremely passionate about english literature. Attendance is mandatory basically because she does not post her slides or uses Moodle. Also, participation is graded, but quite easy to get the points. To get a good grade on her papers do not to leave it until last minute and apply everything you learned.
I sometimes felt like I was in an elementary language arts class; in-class exercises and group work felt silly and unnecessary. Overall, she was very structured and organized and the material was taught well but in turn, her grading was brutal.
Amazing lectures and seriously great feedback on essays. I loved Wendy!
Great teacher and enthusiastic about her job. I love her "hands on" approach to learning and her examples of current day ballads in songs! Class discussions were encouraged and insightful. My only complaint is with Covid-19 disrupting our schedule, but that's not her fault. I missed the class discussions.
Dr. Faith shows little compassion for her students, despite medical documentation and letters of support. Her teaching style is densely vague, highly critical, and sucks the joy out of literature study. Avoid her at all costs.
Wendy is ok but is an awfully hard grader and reduces grade for things that she is not clear about. Her tests are pretty unfair more often than not and include things that I do not think should be on tests. Her approach to online classes is pretty terrible, primarily being slide show lectures that she sends with no face to face at all.
The slides and Discussion Boards are well done, but I prefer Zoom. I find it easier to follow the material when questions can be made in real time. She's been great at answering emails though. I've taken two prior courses from Wendy, and she is definitely better in person, but the class has been well-taught considering the circumstances.
Wendy is a great teacher and very good at responding to emails in a helpful and timely fashion. Her feedback on assignments is excellent as she leaves thorough explanations on how to improve. Her approach to online is lacking though. The course has been flexible but not all that engaging.
I hate everything Zoom (especially when they make us keep our cameras on), so Wendy's method works for me! Her class is actually quite a bit more interactive than the one I'm taking online from Athabasca right now. She is super organized and gives amazing feedback!
She seems like a nice enough person but she marks way too hard. I got As in English in highschool and in her class I'm getting Cs. So frustrating!
She gives good, quick feedback. I never get A's in university English courses, but I did with Wendy as she encourages quality over quantity. Writing to the point without the use of expletives or needless vocabulary was a hard change for me, but overall it made me a better writing. Such interesting content in this course and very impressed with her!
Wendy was a good prof. She marked assignments quickly and gave good feedback, but her exams were unfair. She is also not accommodating to students with health concerns - even with appropriate documentation.
I had so much anxiety this term because of Covid and my living situation and Wendy was my rock. She gave really clear instructions and precise feedback so that I knew exactly how to improve. I didn't obsess about my grade the whole time like I did with other classes. Very understanding of my situation. Thanks Wendy!
Refused to make accommodations for exam conflicts under very reasonable requests (keep in mind this is an intro English) that 2 other profs in third year chemistry and neuro were glad to make. Her methods for online teaching were very inefficient as she would email everything (she did not use moodle at all) I had 85 attachments from her by February
Other than my major, which is neuroscience, Metaphor was the best class I ever took. Content was fascinating and she had an incredibly creative way of teaching it. I'm not kidding when I say this course actually changed my life! I heard that she's left the U. of L. She'll be missed.
Took many classes with Dr. Faith, including an Independent Study. She gave the best feedback. Super nice lady also. Sorry to see her go!
