Great prof, she explains things very clearly. Just make sure you do not miss any classes. Turning in your reports on time will give you an edge. Make sure you call her Dr. Fonarow and not Ms. Fonarow. Oh yeah I think she is HOT.
Great teacher, but very difficult class. Be warned this is not a teacher that will not make you work. She is a perfectionist and expects all those in her class to be the same.
Brilliant and inspiring instructor. Work hard & you will be rewarded with a new anthropological perspective on how you see yourself and others in this world. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Fonarow and wholeheartedly endorse her.
I think she is just too sexual for a class atmosphere. Sorry.
A Goddess! I am not an Anthro major, but was inspired to be one after taking her class. This woman is a genius, and will have you laughing every day of class. I loved this teacher, and encourage everyone else to take a class with her!!!
Very good teacher, explains everything to full detail. A quiz every monday...do the reading and the quizes are cake. Oh yea, shes very hot.
Great projects, do alot of reading, nice woman, great lectures, over all enjoyable class and highly recommended instructor.
I hated the thought of her class.I never asked questions because she was sarcastic in her snsweres.Stay away.....
I thought she was tuff, but you do learn in her class. Her test are hard but if she sees that your trying, shell pass you.She wants to make sure you put in the effort!!Will enjoy, its not boring...
Only reason the class is difficult is because the subject is difficult. She, however, is an extremely clear, helpful, and fair teacher who breaks everything down until it's understood. Her tests are straight-forward & she's enthusiastic about the subject.
I dropped this class after a week. If you like standing up every five minutes and sharing some lame cultural experience then you will love her. I'm sorry, but I'm not five years old and I don't want to have story time with the rest of the class.
This is an interesting class...but she is unclear on what she is lecturing. Her lectures are really hard to follow and they tend to annoy you to a point where you dont even want to listen to her lectures. Suggestion: Only take her if its your last resort.
There a quiz every monday based on the notes and readings. She assigns too much to read and her quizes are very tricky. Every point counts in this class. There is also a boring project to do. Not a fun class, very boring.
There is alot of reading that is assigned and every monday is quiz day(40%).Sometimes she can be unclear but overall she expects effort in her class and there are no tests just two reports. She is funny and curves the final grade, based on class progress.

her weekly quizzes were very annoying...but she does explain everything that is needed...and way tooooo much reading for each week...
She is really hard teacher. If you try your best in that class she will not take that into consideration, and her quizzes are hard however some of it are from the notes and some arent. Overall I wouldn't recommend hr.
To the person below: practically all of the questions on her tests are from notes or the book. If you read the chapters or attended class, then you should know as much. She is the most straight-forward teacher at GCC. Easy class if you're willing to work,
I don't understand why people say she's hard. I didn't read the book, I didn't take much notes, and I still got an A. All you have to do is pay attention in class. She is really fun once you get to know her.
I really enjoyed this class. It is true that there is a lot of reading involved, but if you read you'll do good. I think she is a great teacher and everything we talked about was very interesting. Read and you'll do fine.
very interesting class. shes so excited about what shes teaching sometimes she turns red lol. A lot of reading but even the reading is interesting.
In the two years I spent at GCC, I have to say that Anthro 102 w/ Fonarow was my favorite class. The subject is interesting and she has a great passion for what she teaches. Do the readings cause her quiz questions are straight from the readings.
the all time worst teacher...if your not her pet, shes the biggest **** it the world. too much reading and insane projects. shes evil and anal. beware of this lady people im not kidding u!
Her quizzes and tests arent hard. You're just stupid. Everyone else seems to be doing well except you
SO MUCH READDING FOR HOMEWORK. Her weekly quizzes (40% of your final grade) are annoying and hard. Has a bit of a temper, but not bad. Not a very pleasant experience...I would not take this class again.
She was horrible and she played favorites
Very intelligent teacher. Tends to become a smart ass some time and is very sarcastic. She is not as compassionate about the students as she is the material. The reading is doable. Read excerpts and bold points and you will do fine on the weekly quizzes. She is not the nicest, but isn't horrible.
This class totally rocked, I so enjoyed the class and her teaching style. She gets you going because she is so passionate about the subject. The weekly quizzes are a breeze if you attend class and do the reading, which is not impossible. I will definately take another anthro class with Dr Fonorow
I have had two amazing professors at GCC & Dr. Fonarow is one of them. If you want to learn something, take her class (but do the work). She is helpful, clear, straight-forward, & respects students. She is also open to class discussions & actually encourages student participation. Highly recommended

I have attended both two- and four-year universities. Dr. Fonarow is easily one of the best lecturers I have ever had. Her only "bias" is that she doesn't suffer fools (male or female). You need to focus on the work and not worry about her appearance. You might learn something and earn a good grade.
Do you notice the pattern of poor grammar and sentence structure from those "students" who complain? Look at the way real students write when they take the time to praise a good teacher. She is not a horrible teacher. Maybe "u r" just a bad student?
Can you say Waste of Time? She picks favorites by just looking at them and has a horrible attitude. Has no class what so ever and apparently no respect for students. Wendy Fonarow is defintely a joke and a disgrace to Glendale Community College. is that wendy posting on her own rate? Pathetic
her lectures r very energetic cuz she doesnt read out of the book or off her notes she talks 2 the class as if she is having individual conversations (i dont mean she xcludes people). if u take her class in the lecture hall then u dont have weekly tests u get 3 midterms n a final.
The best instructor I've ever had by far. She should teach the teachers. She understands the subject and makes it interesting. Her lectures brought new perspectives to the world we live in. I took her class years ago and I'm still amazed by what I learned. Valuable info for any major.
she's awesome. by far my favorite teacher at gcc. i took this class previously and failed, then i took fonarow and aced it. her sense of humor may be sarcastic, but that's what's good about her. she definitely keeps things interesting. participate in class and you'll be fine.

DR. FONAROW IS HOT!I WENT TO EVERY SINGLE CLASS JUST TO SEE WHAT SHE WOULD WEAR.I DON'T KNOW IF IT WAS THE GLASSES OR THE TIGHT TOPS BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT HER.ANYWAY, SHE ALSO HAPPENS TO BE THE BEST TEACHER AS FAR AS HOW SHE COVERS MATERIAL.THERE ARE NO TESTS, JUST A WEEKLY QUIZ ON READINGS.
She is a great teacher. Very easy and interesting discussions. Make sure to ace the weekly quizes as she doesnt give any other work (besides one midterm essay and the final).
Dr. Fonarow is easily my favorite teacher. Class discussions are interesting, she enjoys student input, and most of all she respects students. Her lectures are easy to understand and take notes on, and if you do the readings it is not difficult to make a good grade on the weekly quizzes.
You have to allow yourself to get use to her class and her style. At first, you might to bad on those quizzes, but if you read, study, and go to class, then you should be able to pull an A or a B
She is a ****ing idiot. She gives a quiz before going over the material. It is absolutely ****ed up. Anthro is porbably the most useless subject ever introduced into the school system. I think it should be taken out of the curriculum, and Fonarow should be fired.
exceptionally great, i really liked her. Made the class very interesting, she's easy to understand. Very approachable, loved her.
The person below described her with one word: Exceptional. And, that is absolutely correct. However, if you're not willing to read assigned chapters or attend lectures, then, simply, don't take the class. However, if you do put in an honest effort, she will reward you for it, and, in the end, you'll get more out of her class than just a grade. A+
If you don't want to read a lot or fully comprehend the stuff you read, don't take this class. Quizzes every week, and they are on material she hasn't covered in class yet. Though the final was not as bad as she made it seem throughout the class, there is a lot of writing on it. The culture project was a joke, but the other project wasn't hard.
Professor Wendy is the most Outstanding educator I have ever taken. She is truly a GENIUS and anyone who takes her class should pay close attention to her lectures they will open your eyes to a whole new world. Anyone here who has negative things to say probably failed the class or does not have the mental capacity to understand her enlightenenment
Very good teacher for the subject. She is very helpful with everything.
If you enjoy reading material that is confusing and poorly written, then by all means take this class. Clarity was severely lacking throughout the class, and those who did well are surely suck-ups. Get off her jock!
If you don't consider her annoying and hard quizes every week, then this class is REALLY interesting. The subject is interesting if you like learning about different societies. Although the class was hard, I enjoyed it. She is passionate about what she teaches and this is very important. She knows the subject really well too. I would recommend her.
Hay, comon this teacher is the best of all. She funny and talks about everything. I f you take her you will have great time in her class. Awesome teacher, easy A.
I don't know what other people are talking about... she ain't hot that's for sure... I don't recommend her if your a freshman because she expects a lot. She is weird but the lectures are interesting.
I don't know how many classes I've taken of hers, but she was amazing through all of them. she is the reason I became an anthropologist. She is totally hot and deserves more chili peppers.
DR. FONAROW KNOWS HER SUBJECT INSIDE AND OUT. A VERY WELL EDUCATED PROFESSOR WHO PASSES ON A GREAT AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE TO HER STUDENTS. HER GRADING IS VERY FAIR. SHE WON'T GRADE U DOWN BECAUSE SHE DSNT LIKE U. I WONT SAY THAT SHE IS THE EASIEST TEACHER BUT HER CLASS IS WORTH THE EFFORT. AFTR TKIN DIS CLS, THE WAY U LOOK AT ODER SOCIETIES WIL CHNGE
What a great class. Dr. Fonarow is very clear and knows her stuff. She has a real talent for teaching. Take her class you may learn something.
she is crazy
She was so awesome and seriously helpped me. I found myself doing better because I wanted to prove that she wasn't wasting her time with me.
She's a really fun teacher... very interersted in her subject matter and makes it interesting for you too. Has lots of great stories and life experience, very smart, cool classes. Do read the text, do study, and definitely participate and she'll recognize the effort. Cool teacher if you want to take some cool anthro classes.
She is really really cool. I love being in her class. Dr. Fonarow is one of the coolest people to talk to as well. I also wish her all the luck in the world with her book.
Though I got an A, she's severely confused and has an academic axe to grind. She needs to take her own circular logic into consideration since she takes too much at face value, whether she likes it or not. The others that did well were dull, suck-up parasites who need to powder their noses because it is riddled with brown.
This lady could not be any more worse. Even her own mates, as she admits, are telling her what kind of an uber-dolt she is. So, if you are not a kiss-ass or cannot finish long readings, don't take this instructor. She makes it harder on all except for her usual brown-nosers that have no point, just like her.
Those who do not want to do the work; want to cheat; or just want an easy "A" should not take her. Class is taught as college level course; not elementary. Either do the work or stop complaining about her teaching methods for your failure. She is incredibly gifted at what she does, makes class enjoyable & has a wealth of knowledge on most subjects.
Overall a good teacher. Very knowledgeable. I find her somewhat impatient with her students though. At times she asks for feedback and if we examine a particular subject for while, she tends to get frustrated at herself and at her students. She tends to jump from one area of topic to another during her lecture, can be confusing at times.
Dr. Fonarow is a great professor. There is no question as to who is in charge in her classroom, which is refreshing. She ensures attendance by giving a quiz each week. If you're looking for a class you can skate through, this isn't the class for you. If you're looking for a solid teacher on a fascinating topic, you'll be pleased.
Professor Fonarow Rocks!
One of the best professors teaching at GCC right now.
Did her thesis on Indie music scene in the UK. Tells you a lot about her background. She's a cool chick and very intelligent. Don't mess around guys b/c she will call you out and make you cry. She loves her subject and is a very enthusiastic teacher.
quizzes you on the readings and lectures every week. its a lot of, usually dull, reading.
Prof Fonarow is really cool, funny, and very enthusiastic. I think she does have her favorites, but that doesn't affect her grading. There's a lot of reading in her class, which I hate, but surprisingly I'm still getting a A/B in the class (so her class can't be that hard). Some things she says can be kind of offensive depending on how you take it.
Dr. F is the best professor at GCC! Her so-called favorites are students who pay attention in class and aren't disruptive, so be a responsible student and you'll be fine. She loves the subject she's teaching and is amazingly knowledgable without being intimidating. Almost considered changing my major to Anthro after taking her classes. I RECOMMEND!
i luv this teacher....she makes me the most boring class (no offense) to the most interesting i learned a lot in this class..just listen to her lectures....u dont even have to take notes (but that doesnt apply to everyone)....just do all the HWS and have a descent final results and you will get a B
you know i love this teacher. She's one of the nices person i've ever met in my life. She's so funny that after a while you can't wait till you go to her class. I wish i could take her again. I never forget about her.
she is a really hard teacher. she like things done her way and picks favorites.she tends to offend her students as well. she is not a professor i'd choose again or recommend to anyone.
This class is a very differcult class! She has her favorites which are called her "Super A plus students" which are those students who write the majority of the commits on this page. She is not a very clear professor and if you are confused for get about asking questions because she does not like people who do because they desrupt her teaching!
This massege is for the peoplewho complain about her style of teaching: People grow up. This lady has been teaching for such long time not in GCC, but UCLA. Comon now. She so sweet nd easy going for a college prof and she is very helpful. she remembers you and when she sees u she invite u to her club meeting. i've learned alot in her class. best te
One of the best... wait THE ONLY best/good teacher ive had at GCC... I took her anthro 105 class and loved it so much that i ended up taking her Anthro 104 class as well... the ones who complain and say that shes not a good teacher obviously were the ones who didnt pay attention in class and didnt do the work... I strongly recommend her! :)
For all the people who think that her class is easy get over it not everyone shares the same thoughts. This teacher is hard and does explain what she teaches. After having her I have choosen to never take an Antropology class again!
The best professor I have had in the two years I have been at GCC!! Her lectures are engaging, clear, and she is notably interested in the subject herself. Also, she has control over her classroom, which is a refreshing change from some of the professors who don't frown upon constant chatter and cell-phone rings. More like her, please!!
Magic? Witchcraft? Sexy title may hook you, but content will keep you in the class. First 4-6 weeks cover anthro theory - not always fun. However, remainder of class readings, films put theory into action. Keep up w quizes, reading & final will be easy. Very knowledgable instructor. Opinionated, but fair in grading.
i thought she was very unfair i missed 3 weeks of class because i sprained my back and couldn't walk or sit down and i send her my dr.'s note through e-mail and she still expected me to turn in the hw and send it to her through e-mail! when i couldn't even sit down at the computer!I started off well in the class and ended up with a C hard teacher!
BORING lectures and films every week. Very difficult quizes every week. Horrible class
At first I thought that this lady was weird. Then I came to find out that she is a highly intelligent, respectable woman. If you want to know how she watch the movie "Legal Blond" it represents her. If don't want to work do not take this lady. Lots of reading but she does clarify material during lecture.
Really awsome teacher. Teaches well, very intelligent, has interesting stories. Lots of reading, but you will definitely learn something. You have to be semi-intelligent to get her teaching method and for all you haters...read a book, maybe then you'll have the capacity to understand what good education means.
The worst class I've ever had. Whatever she lectures during the class doesn't match with the reading. Tests are very hard. She doesn't talk much about the assignments. The only thing she does is talk about her love affairs. DON'T TAKE HER!!
umm she is all into it and it makes it good to know that the teacher does like the subject that she is teaching. I will agree she is nice and teaches very well BUT her quizzes are a little tough she says that if you read youll be fine but try to read like 3 times or other wise youll miss that detail questions in her quiz and the final is even harde
IF YOU ARE NOT INTO DOING YOUR WORK AND TAKING WEEKLY TEST THEN THIS CLASS ISNT FOR YOU. THE BEST THING IS WENDY IS SO INTO ANTHROPOLOGY SHE MAKE IT SUPER EASY AND FUN TO LEARN. YOU HAVE TO BE PRETTY LAZY TO GET ANYTHING LESS THAN AN A IN HER CLASS
the class is very boring. whoever says she is a nice teacher is wrong. she does not want ot understant her students and is a hard grader teacher. do not take her if you have other choices.
She is the best teacher I have ever had! The class was interesting, the subject is fascinating, and she is amazingly clear about what she wants on her tests and essays. To the person who is complaining about her not "understanding" her students, that is not her job. Her job is to teach them the subject; not put up with excuses or personal problems.
One of the best classes I have taken in college. She really wants you to learn and understand the info. She makes the class very fair and if you do the reading and come to class I can't see why you wouldn't get an A. She is a great teacher and a really cool person.
As someone who was not one of her so-called favorites--I was able to get an A in both of her classes. I did this by doing the work and showing up to every class. It wasn't easy--but I wasn't lazy--and didn't expect her to cater to me--this is college kids--welcome to the real world!

no good
Don't waste your time.
She's great! like tony the tiger
cool lady, but she teaches like we all know what she's talking about. and frankly, i'm not a dr of anthropology, so dont treat me like one.
Laid back and easy going. Her exams and quizzes require alot of writing and info but overall I give it an 8/10. Aside from videos, lectures are kinda boring but I just check her out and daze. Anyhow, congrats on the book Dr. Fonarow and best wishes.
Kinda out there if you ask me. Thinks to highly just because she has a phd. Got mad at a student that called her prof. instead of doctor. Devalues her gcc students as opposed to her "ucla" students. Class was okay, uneccessary reading at some points.
Very insightful readings and interesting subject matter. Dr. Fonarow is passionate about Anthropology and expects a lot out of her students. If you're not willing to do all the work and study, you shouldn't be in college. My favorite!
One of the best teachers at GCC. Shes funny and creative. She does what she says. Very clear with her lessons. Grades easy! Returns papers back on time. Very helpful at answering questions and always returns emails in the same day or next day. Very interesting class. Just do the reading and pay attention in class and its a very very easy A!!!
An incredible individual. A true professor. She reveals a world often ignored and neglected and does it in an enlightening and inspiring way. A true professional who's passionate about her work and her students. Her lectures are clear and tests are unambiguous. She has excellent follow through and is substantially helpful . Top notch! Eye candy++++
the required reading gets a little intense at times, but i guarantee if you read every word and take good lecture notes you'll ace all the quizzes. her lectures are fascinating, but NEVER fall asleep or decide not to take notes cause she'll get pretty upset. overall excellent, facinating class A+
GREAT CLASS AND BEST TEACHER I'VE TAKEN! :)
Ok, here is the scoop: Prof. Fonarow can be a blast. She's sometimes moody and says things in such a way that you feel like you shouldn't every speak up in class again. She does play favorites... preferring the brooding quiet guys. However, her class and the insight she provides will change the way you see the world and will stay with you.
Dr Fonarow is a great. She knows her material very well and also knows how to get to her students. The class itself is very interesting and you will end up having a different view of today's world. She gets you to think and is very enthusiastic about class participation. If you read all the material and pay attention youll be fine.
Fonarow has a deep rooted mean streak. if she finds a weakness in a student she tends to exploit it until she completely embarrasses them. She has the potential to be a positive influence on her students but because of her arrogance and condescending personality, she ends up leaving you with just a sour memory.
not a good teacher. very moody. thinks highly of herself!! test are hard.
She is the WORST teacher i have ever had in my entire life. She has such a bias towards certain students. She is so rude, no one feels that they can freely give thier opinions because she exploits her students.
She was sometimes moody but mostly helpful and interesting. Go to class because her lectures are most important for the exams, read most of what she assigns to help with your understanding of the material, and study your notes. You'll get an A and an excellent background in anthro that will be invaluable if you decide to major in a social science.
she is the worst teacher ever ever ever DO NOT TAKE HER I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HER.....
She is a very challenging teacher, expects you to KNOW the material, encourages discussion and wont tolerate the "I saw this thing on TV" mentality. If you want to learn (and to learn HOW to learn) she ROCKS. If your are lazy and think that the title of the class equals and easy A, you'll be disappointed.
the hardest class i have ever taken at gcc; however, still got an a. the class requires an immense amount of reading and participation in order to do good. the tests cover everything from lectures, to videos, to book notes. if you are not prepared don't take this class.
the hardest class i have ever taken at gcc; however, still got an a. the class requires an immense amount of reading and participation in order to do good. the tests cover everything from lectures, to videos, to book notes. if you are not prepared don't take this class.
There is soooooo much reading required for this class...it's like hello we have a million other things to do too you know.
FONAROW IS VERY FUNNY N EXCITING, SHES UPBEAT, BUT CAN BE MOODY...THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS ALOTTTTTTT OF READING INVOLVED..ALOTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. SHES PRETTY CHILL N OPEN, VERY FUN.
Considering that this is school, there is a lot of reading. The class and the prof is very interesting. Reading the material comes in handy for quizzes and tests, you dont read just for the hell of it, if you want to learn... take her
THERE IS A LOTTTT OF READING AND STUDYING IN THIS CLASS. THERE IS A QUIZ EVERY WEEK.. BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND TAKING THIS CLASS BECAUSE HONESTLY YOU LEARN SO MUCH FROM HER...IT'S JUST AMAZING HOW MUCH KNOWLEDGE SHE HAS AND SHE'S ACCOMPLISHED A LOT IN HER LIFE. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO LEARN SOMETHING TAKE HER CLASS!
Sometimes she talks way too much. Although it's very informative, sometimes it would be nice if she talked less.
Because of her, I am now an Anthropology Major. Her class is so engaging, her lectures keep me thinking all week, and she shows incredible videos each class. Her knowledge base is very impressive, and very current.
i love her
If anyone decides to take this class take in consideration...she has no heart. Read the book, its useless. Do the assignments..their useless. Listening to her lecture is like someone plucking a hair from your arms for every single word she speaks. If you wish to sit in hell for an hour and a half, take her class.
This class will be with me forever. I'm really glad I took it. It changed my whole outlook on life :)
Is it just you or does this lady seem to babble on and on without keeping track of her thoughts? Does she try too much to accentuate her narcissistic image? Dunno. Just read the text and ignore her trying to monopolize class time to be "cool" w/ the crowd. Don't even speak, she loves hearing her own tone and hates her faulty analogies questioned.
She keeps her lectures entertaining and really cares about her student's opinions and questions.
Anthro is a tough topic because you have to approach things objectively. Once you can get past that (considering you're not only at GCC to collect financial aid to pay for your new BMW) it is interesting and eyeopening. Dr Fonarow is a great teacher with a great sense of humor. Pay attention, dont speak out of turn, and do the short readings. EASY!
She does love the sound of her own voice. For the last class before the final, she recited a speech she wrote to summarize the course in an extremely pretentious way. God was it dry. And to top it off, she broke the bored silence after finishing with a "Thank you," so that she would receive an obligatory applause.
This teacher is very obviously extremely knowledgeable about her class as well as very excited. I appreciated going to a class and listening to someone talk that seemed worth listening to. She makes herself very available to anyone needing additional assistance but she doesn't take any crap. Take her class seriously or don't take it.
OK topic and class w/ quizzes every week but she worsens the way it's graded. Her problem: she's afflicted with "I was a walking cliche NOTHING in high school and still am but now I can be a bully others because I can hide behind my degree" notion. SOLUTION: avoid her and don't take her or expect anything beyond a self-praising browbeating session.
What a waste of my time. Her teaching is "Anthro Light" for students who wish to transfer into Anth majors, go to another school. The content was silly and non-academic. I felt like I was an audience member, not a student. I wanted and needed academic content and I got "fluff." I believe teachers like this are irresponsible
omg shes soo smarttt, and makes the class so intresatinggg, best anthro. teacher ever, if u can take her!! u'll enjoy d class!! just need to read the articls and d articles are intreasting n she discusses them in calss aslo, besttt teacher man!
Woww! This teacher makes you read all this bs like you dont have any other classes to think about. If your only taking her class and no other classes for the whole semester you might pass. Its a boring class that puts you to sleep. Seriously if your not guna be an anthro major don't take the class youll regret it. Also unfair grader!
Her lectures are a bit scattered but she made me love Cultural Anthro. Most students didn't like her but I thought she was awesome. Her lectures were interesting and always had a bit of humor in them. The grading was only two tests and a final. If you study well and take good notes, you will ace it.
She does play favorites though. I was one of the quiet brooding guys that got an A, granted I worked for it. It helps to be on her good size and its fun to charm others :)
I have never disliked a class as much. The minute she started lecturing I stopped paying attention. This never happens, I usually enjoy my classes! She's not friendly, and narcissistic. Quizzes at the beginning of each class, attendance at the last second. Never lets out early, reading was EXTREMELY BORING! Overall hated the class, genuinely.
She might as well record her class and play it on the projector screen.. She doesnt seem to care what her students have to say though she did say in the beginning that she learns things from them.. Yes, I bet if she gave them a chance and didnt start to scoff and roll her eyes before the point was made then she would. Bottom line: pretty arrogant.
worst teacher i have ever had, her quizzes are weird she gives us a quiz on stuff she didnt even explain, expects you to read the book and take a quizz, if it was like that i would just take on line courses do everyting by my self whats the point of going to school. when you talk to her she makes you feel like shes smarter then you are,
one tough cookie
DON'T TAKE HER. She's the biggest waste of time in the world. Even if she's the only teacher available, just take another class. She assigns 40+ pages of reading every week and quizzes you on trivial parts of reading that you can't even remember. Don't do it, you will hate your life. Not to mention she thinks she's God's gift to the planet.
Dr. Fonarow is one of the few REAL professors at GCC. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Anthropology. If you are looking for an easy A, find another class. She doesn't put up with B.S! If you are a serious student, she can really prepare you for University. Make sure to do all the reading and attend class regularly.
Good overall professor knows her stuff
Very good professor, very easy to keep up with, very easy to get clarification on anything you are lost on, and class is kept entertained, what more can you ask for? just do your part on the reading, and pay attention during the lectures (which arent boring) and you are set for an A.
Her hw= her readings which are long. She loves to pat herself on the back to the point where she's gotta take a day off for injury n when she's challenged she gets fretful and talks down on her students. Sadly, they didnt teach her that skill in her Harry Potter school she dropped out of.BE PREPPED FOR IT.WE GET IT YOU WANNA BE YOUNG BUT ENOUGH.
I took her cultural anthropology course my first fall session at GCC. She's an amazing teacher. She uses great examples and emphasizes what to study for the exams. I loved the videos she showed us especially Lawn and Order.
Very knowledgeable about the subject. Explains everything very clearly and tries to allow everyone to participate. The readings are a lot, but that should be expected in any college level course.
Took her religion and magic class. Awesome professor, knows her stuff very well. By no means easy though, so get ready to learn!
You can tell she loves and knows her stuff, but honestly she can't teach. I got nothing out of her class because she teaches and expects you to know the information as if you were an anthropologist or even an anthro major. I wanted to take it just for igetc requirements but this class was the only class i've ever dropped. Not worth your time.
Do not take this teacher !!!!!!! She does NOT know how to teach... All she does is talk about her life, her book blah blah.. if you call her MS she'll give you the biggest attuide and make you call her DR Fonarow.. i honestly didnt learn anything you have to read the book no hwk just tests I DONT NOT RECOMMEND!
She knows her material good. the reading is too much for each class sesion. she is not nice and has attitude towards the students. she thinks she is all that and likes to talk about herself only. did not pass the class cuzz missed like 4 quizes. Attendance is mandatory and you have to pass every quis with an A in order to pass the class.
I greatly enjoyed taking her course. Although at times she went off on tangents, she is a great teacher and lecturer. In fact, I enjoyed her class so much I became an Anthropology major. But, as a warning to people who may mistake this class as an easy A, this is NOT an easy class. Be ready to take copious amounts of notes and to study hard.
Dr.Fonarow has been helpful not just in the area of Anthro. but in all aspects of my educational endevors. Any hash or down right cruel comments are more than likely lazy students with a disproprtionate sence of entitlement and shoukd just do the work and not blame their failures on the teacher. What a student is expected to do is not unreasonible
Dr.Fonarow has been helpful not just in the area of Anthro. but in all aspects of my educational endevors. Any hash or down right cruel comments are more than likely lazy students with a disproprtionate sence of entitlement. What a student is expected to do is not unreasonible at all so grow up!
Dr. Fonarow is a great professor. She has weekly quizzes which are extremely easy so long as you've done the reading. The lectures were always very in depth and interesting. The reading was on the dry side (though I've found that's more the subject of anthro in general, not the professors). If you want to expand your horizons I recommend her.
i dont know how she doesnt have a chilli pepper! shes hot! and that helps me stay in focus in class. fun topics, fun class. i enjoyed it alot. class is easy if your not lazy. its pretty much reading articles, some lecture, and fun projects! if your not lazy you will pass.
I loved her Anthropology of Magic Witchcraft and Religion Class! She gives great lectures and provides good videos to reiterate her points. She does give readings and weekly quizzes, but welcome to college. If you don't want to work hard, try something else. First-class teacher!
Dr. Fonarow is an excellent professor. This class started out a little slow but is worth sticking with. Dr. Fonarow makes linguistic anthropology fun and really cares about her students. She wants you to succeed, just be prepared to do your readings!
She is clear about what she wants you to know. Very helpful and great office hours. Talk to her in class, TAKE GOOD NOTES, and read the book. Same old stuff like any other class. She's really hot so try not to get distracted by her great chest. Aside from that, super cool teacher.
This class was not easy. At first I had trouble adjusting to her b/c she was too intense in lecture. The tests were tricky and each question looked impossible (and this is coming from a student who studied her butt off). Luckily, she gives you extra points for the test, and curves your final grade (85%-A). By the end, you'll come to appreciate her.
Her lectures are really interesting, but somehow...her tests don't match up with what she says. She's completely obsessed with random tribes and mentions negligible facts in tests for no reason. It's interesting, but really hard. make sure to read the random articles she assigns...she puts a lot of emphasis on them.
She was really unclear with her lectures and her tests were very difficult
This teacher is a pretty bad teacher. I got an A, but the class was honestly stupid. I don't want to take another anthro class. She makes you read multiple chapters and asks the most RANDOM questions from those chapters. Boring class, stupid notes, and bad overall class. I wouldn't recommend her. She is rude and could care less about her students.
I wouldn't recommend taking her, she's totally useless, test questions are random and do not match to the text and lecture.rude, boring, doesn't care about her students at all.doesn't know how to spell simple words, yet still she's proud of herself being a doctor
Professor Fonarow is great!!!She is very insightful extremely intelligent. Does not take B/S such as tardiness and not doing the reading. If you are looking to learn then take her otherwise go w/ smone who dosen't care. Make sure to do the reading and take excellent notes
She's and extremely passionate teacher who truly couldn't be more enthusiastic. She expects you to act like an adult and if that is too much for you to handle then don't take her. There is a lot of reading and her tests can be slightly unclear but all in all a very informative class.
good teacher
Shes a cool teacher, her class is easy and she makes the students laugh every once in a while.
if you take this teacher do not stretch or crack your neck. her majesty will threaten to throw you out (not kidding). calling her wendy'll be met with a lashing. inflexible, bitter, arrogant, boring and brags about her phd like she's the first person to attain one in history. views her opinions as the word of god. avoid her like the plague she is
no office hours, does not use blackboard system at all. arrogant and brags about how she goes to 'gigs' constantly, which seems to heavily effect her teaching since shes half asleep and her tests are misspelled and grammatically incorrect making it extremely hard to do well. her tests are too random and all trick questions about minute details
Professor Fonarow doesn't seem to care if you're tired (because of a full schedule or having to work all day). If you yawn, stretch, close your eyes, crack your neck, you WILL be thrown out of class. She gives no second chances. If your work is late, tough beans! She will belittle you in front of everybody if you accidentally call her Miss Fonarow.
Great class, keeps it interesting with films. Clearly loves what she teaches and loves her students but you will be expected to do readings and work. Highly recommended.
She's a bit over the top, a great character I must admit. Must pay attention and take LOTS of notes since you will be tested on it. Multiple choice and brief essay, don't ditch her class if you want to succeed.
She is over the top! A unique character. Must take LOTS of notes, since the quizes are based on what you learned the prior session. Multiple choice and brief essay. Attendance mandatory since you need the notes. Thank goodness I'm done with this class.
About 40 pgs of reading/week. Full reading and notes required. Weekly quiz. Not an easy A class. Strict and demands(deserves) respect. She is passionate and smart. She will challenge you and leave you feeling accomplished. Encourages participation and is a great prep if you plan to transfer to a 4 year. Highly Recommended! Best quality prof at GCC.
Her quizzes are confusing i always get the essay question wrong for some reason even tho i read and write exactly what i read she says its wrong...go figure oh and she spits....A LOT. if ur gunna take her class avoid the front seat XD
She is so incredibly rude, I've never seen anything like it. It seems she can't go a single class without humiliating someone by showing off her "intellect". Got the hell out of there...
Professor Fonarow is the best! Her teaching style keeps every class interesting. Her tests and grading scale are totally fair and she is always available to help anyone who asks. Do not miss out on taking a class from her. She's great!
Not a class for the closed minded. She's very engaging and loves class participation and questions. Lots of note taking and heavy reading, all of which are articles related to the weekly topic.
Great teacher. Hard class, and a ton of reading but the reading is all worth it. I actually decided to keep my books after my class for future reference and enjoyment. Her topics and class discussions are beautifully orchastrated and their isn't a bone in my body that regrets taking her class. IF you want to get an A, you must think critically!
let me be honest.. i never went to class, never read the articles she assigned and never read the text book. and i got a C. I deserve the grade I got for not doing anything BUT....imagine if I actually did any of it. Her class is VERY interesting and easy if you study even an hour a week. plus she's very funny and cute
There was no textbook for my class (she was trying something new my semester) so all the reading was online. The lectures pretty much go over the reading and give some info out of the of the reading. We had one 4-page paper which wasn't too hard to do and 2 midterms. Everything on the the midterms were taken from lecture and the final was cumulativ
She is very organized and lectures are interesting. She is very enthusiastic about the subject. But she may be quite intimidating. If you say something in class that she does not agree with, she will make you look like the dumbest person in the world. And she wonders why no one really speaks up in class?
Dr. Fonarow is very passionate about her subject and her class is very interesting. There is A LOT of reading involved but so do not let it add up do readings before class because her lectures explain the readings in greater detail and u will benefit from asking questions. tests are moderate not too hard just do all the readings. great teacher.
Such a good teacher. She can see through people who are just trying to get an easy A. Do the reading and the class will be a breeze. I got a B because i slacked off in the beginning. Take her!
As I take more and more classes. It makes me so grateful that I had a teacher as dedicated, Who also pushed me to be the best student I can be. I learned so much. If you don't want to work don't take her. If you have a thirst for knowledge she is the teacher for you! To be fair if someone gave a less than steller review it is all them. Just saying.
Excellent teacher but no pushover. She expects attentiveness and interest from her students, and rewards such with treasures of knowledge. If you want to learn, any of her classes is the place to be. But slackers and show-boaters beware.
I'm lucky to have taken multiple classes from such a fantastic, dedicated teacher. Dr. Fonarow is not an easy teacher, but she will go out of her way to help students who put forth an effort. I learned more in her classes than in any others I've had before or since. She's amazing.
DO NOT TAKE HER. you will regret it. DIFFICULT tests, LOTS of reading
DONT TAKE. yeah duh if you study your ass off and take notes youll do well in any class...but trust me dont take her.
she does not give out any As the highest grade u can expect in her class is a B. I found her lectures to be interesting and learned a lot in her class. BUT I didn't get the grade I deserved which was disappointing.
Dr. Fonarow isn't the easiest teacher and she is a bit strict but she knows what she is talking about. If you actually want to learn take her! you will learn a lot. She is gladly to help anyone that really wants the help. This isn't my major but I enjoyed it so much! If anthro is your major TAKE HER!!!
She's a fun teacher that knows how to get a class interested in what she's talking about. Her tests are a bit difficult but the projects are incredibly easy. I got Cs on the tests and As on the projects so I ended up with a B. If you work for it, an A is possible.
It is a quite interesting class, but you have to work your ass for a good grade.Half of the questions on the tests are tricky. If you want an good grade you must write down good notes and read a bunch of in the moodle. Getting A is almost impossible.I ended up with a B, but it was really hard and i mean it.If you need to lower your GPA .GO AHEADD!!
Very insightful lectures and she is big on understanding concepts. Do the reading, follow the syllabus, follow instructions and take notes! This is a very difficult concept for some students, so for you just drop the class. I'm tired of you making her dumb it down for you.
She's a great professor. This course requires a lot of time. You need to read a lot. The tests are all based on class lectures and readings. She's very fair. It's not hard, but is time consuming. Take notes when you read all the articles and review them for exams. Also go to the SI.
she is a nice person and down to earth. she uploads all readings onto moodle which is helpful. her tests are probably the hardest tests ive EVER taken at gcc. even with studying & going to SIs your screwed. you have to dedicate at least 4 hours a day to her readings. im having to drop her class b/c of how difficult it is. may the force be with you
The good thing about this class is that the textbook is on moodle. Yay for saving money! But the class is not that easy. There's a lotttttttt to read and too many minor details to memorize. I did not like her tests at all I don't know where she got all those info from, it was obviously not from the texts I was reading.
Class was somewhat interesting but I didn't like her teaching methods or tests. Her expectations are very unclear.
She had an attitude problem the whole time and was way to involved with her whole indieproffesor thing with the music. Just would not at all recommend her.
I was told by a few people that it's ~impossible~ to get an A in her class. I ended up getting an A. Her lectures are detailed and important so you must attend. I missed one class and missed a few questions on the midterm because of it. It's a real college class. Do the reading and comprehend it and you should be fine.
This class is very very very but very time consuming. It should rather be called a 4-5 unit class with her standards. It is a lot of concept. She demands a load of reading and not even SI helped. She does not provide a study sheet so you wouldn't know a clue on what she's going to test you on.
She is amazing. She is really passionate about her work and she helps you understand concepts. She does give out a lot of reading but they are interesting readings that are examples of the things she is teaching. They really help clarify material. She gives weekly quizzes on the readings.
Dr. Fonarow is an execptional professor. Sure she does give a lot of reading but this is college. She's very passionate about her field and her teaching style requires you to pay attention since her exams are based off lecture and the reading. Best part was that there was no need for a textbook, plus she's hot! 2 test and 1 final.
She's very passionate and knowledgable in her field, which makes for great lectures. The class is very interactive and participation is important, reading is also must in this course as she gives quizzes on the reading weekly--which are fairly easy if you actually read. Expectations are made clear and they're not hard to live up to if you try.
This class is very time consuming. If you want a good grade you better do all the reading. Also go to class everyday, her tests are very difficult.
She's an amazing teacher who makes sure to explain her work very carefully and answers all questions. You cannot use your phone like she will literally take it away but in a class that interesting who wants to be on it ? She gave us a Pdf of a textbook. Plus she's super hot .. Great stuff!
One of my favorite teachers at GCC. Makes class super interesting and lets the students get involved. No homework besides online reading which is a necessity to do well on tests. Extra credit is offered throughout the semester but not needed if you stay on track.
Dr. Fonarow is one of the best professors at GCC. The only thing that was hard was keeping up with all the reading, especially if you have other classes that demand as much attention. Tests are hard, you must truly understand the concepts, but she clarifies them in her lectures. Prepares you for a higher level education. Enjoyed the I-Clickers!
Dr. Fonarow is a good lecturer for the most part, but that's where the positive attributes cut short. She is quite arrogant and condescending. She also told the class in the beginning that the tests were going to cover the general idea of the readings. NOPE! Memorize 30-40 pages of specific details each week, because her tests are VERY hard.
she gives great lectures ,but her test are confusing not always about the reading and she didn't give much explanation what was going to be on the test so it would always be a surprise. So you really have to study for her tests.
Great Professor. Lectures are a bit long but nothing too bad. Be sure to read the assigned readings and you should be fine. Take good notes about the videos showed in class.
No clear grading, would be helpful if she gave us some sort of report on how we are doing in the class, or use moodle grades to have an idea on our grade
She is very difficult to understand in my opinion. The lectures are very difficult because her voice is so droning and nasally. She doesn't look you in the eyes when she talks but seems to be in her head so it doesn't make for good lectures and its hard to take in the information. Ii do not recomend her a a teacher.
I admit she is very arrogant but that shouldn't matter as many professors are. What does matter is that her tests are not clear at all. You can study forever -what will be on the test is something totally unexpected or not important at all. I am an "A" student ,have studied very hard and will probably get a B. Do NOT take this class! A waste!
Goes off topic a lot she doesn't know how to explain well.
I don't know. At first she seemed like she was going to be a good professor, but towards the middle of the semester, it was more than obvious that wasn't true. She knows her stuff, but spends too much time talking about her damn Ph.D. and how great indie music is. Also, don't expect everything you read to be on the tests.
I don't understand her. You read a ton and then she tests u on a minor , unimportant detail. It makes no sense. Sometimes i feel embarased for her when she talks about her phd and her music all the time and you can see how little self esteem she has. Terrible lectures , not to the point. waste of time. if you take it, you will regret it.
I have found Professor Fonarow to be one of the most insightful, approachable, and knowledgeable professors I have had. When it comes down to it, she is a university level professor. She provides good lectures and detailed readings and is willing to work with you. If you are interested in culture or anthropology you will love any of her classes.
Makes you work for a good grade but she makes her lectures very interesting. There's a test every week, don't miss a class or you will do poorly on the following weeks test. Make sure to do the reading she will test on something obscure. She's kooky but that's what's charming about her, she made me love Anthro. I kind of wish she was my mentor.
Taking her class is like riding a magical fairy bus to Narnia
Professor Fonarow's knowledge and passion about Anthropology made me want to listen to her and learn. She's awesome and didn't make us spend a hundred dollars on a textbook so the readings were online. Videos shown in class were relevant and the homework we had was fun stuff like analyzing tweets. Test questions were fair and she's sweet and funny.
I found Dr. Fonarrow to be a good professor. I really liked her case study videos and readings. No assigned textbook you have to purchase. Supplies it on Moodle. Only complaint is she brings her Chihuahua and it roams the lecture hall. Completely inappropriate and against school policy. Licensed Service animals only. I made sure to bring my inhaler
She is a good teacher. But do not expect any extra credit activities. There are quizzes every week, which make up for the most part of your final grade so if you mess them up your final grade would be low. On her final she said there wouldn't be any question from weekly readings and videos, but from 65 questions at least 20 were from readings
Her lectures can be a lot of fun but her quizzes focus on the most minor insignificant details in the book. She curves the quizzes by .5 so there are opportunities for extra credit. Her instructions are really unclear, we were told the final would be on the lectures but 30% of it ended up being on readings. Overall, she's an okay teacher.
This class is super fun and keeps you interested even though it is a lot of reading. She gives a quiz on the readings and the last lecture right at the beginning of every class. Some students didn't like this but as long as you do the reading you will do well also it helps you know exactly where your grade is at. I highly recommend her class!
There is a ton of reading and she grades you on the most minor insignificant details not on the main points . Its a real weird way to teach. I did not like her teaching style at all and I did not like the class. I do not recommend it and I am so thankful it is over.
This was the worst class I have ever had. The teacher was mean and arrogant. It was a terrible enviroment to learn in. I really didn't learn anything. The lectures were tedious and the tests were not based on the ideas of the readings. She talks a lot about her phd which is really boring.
Arrogant woman, who never really answers questions, but rather beats around the bush. In all honesty, if you are not an anthro major and can't give two hoots about a random tribe in Africa, or Papua Nu Ginea then do not take this class or this teacher. Good Luck
She never gives extra credit. and her grading is wired. I though I was getting an A in the class but ended up getting a B. I just needed 6 points to get an A, but she didn't care and gave me a B.
This class is pretty easy to pass if you do the reading. All you do in class is watch videos. The professor is excessively rude and condescending, though. She'll act like she has no idea what you're saying if you ask a question, and evades answering it. Thinks she's better than everyone for having met musicians that no one cares about.
This class is pretty easy but I wouldn't take it. The readings she offers don't help at all. Yet some of the stuff on the test aren't even covered in class. She is unclear and gets off topic in class a lot. The videos you watch are so boring it'll make you want to pull your hair out. We live in 2017 yet all her videos are from like 1970s.
You have a Ph.D, get over it. Personally, I have two doctoral degrees that obviously took much work to obtain. However, I don't walk around as if I'm better than anyone. A Ph.D is simply to acknowledge one's studies, not worth. If you enroll in any of her classes you'll know exactly why I chose to write this as my review. Good luck!
Professor Fonarow is very passionate about anthropology and it inspired me to really find what I like doing in life. Before I took her class I lived in a vacuum but after her class I view the world from a Global perspective with a little more awareness of what's going on around me and how privileged I am. If you pay attention and read you pass.
Dr Fonarow is an absolutely brilliant woman. I was not ready for her level of knowledge. There was A LOT of reading for this class and no hint as to what would specifically be on the tests. Be sure to attend every class and take good notes! She is an amazing professor! I absolutely admire her and her brilliant mind.
There are times where she's in a good mood and other times where she should just stay home for the day. She has an attitude and that really didn't settle well with me. also, she makes you look stupid when you ask her questions. She literally made a foreign exchange student cry because of it. I recommend taking another Anthropology class.
She's a perfectly fine professor. Everyone complaining about her has clearly not sampled the rest of the mess in the anthro department as she's the best. Very knowledge, kind, not arrogant in the slightest (would you say that about a male professor)? Just hate her multiple choice tests as they're tricky and unnecessarily difficult.
Wendy has one of the worst personalities I've ever come across. She's also a below average instructor. A student yawned and she accused him of "sarcastically yawning". A student checked his phone and rather than just asking him to leave she swiped it and the student was forced to argue with her to get it back. Poor speaker, berates students.
I learned so much in this class. Dr. Fonarow was great, and I would absolutely take her class again. Show up, take notes, do the reading. Listen. If you do all that you will be fine. Study. I found her funny, smart and completely knowledgeable. This was a great class!
For starters, Dr. Fonarow is the Head of the Anthro Dept. at GCC. She is intelligent and I respect her so much. Pros: She will post all readings on Moodle (you don't buy a book). Tons of extra credit. 5 grading criteria (2 tests, final, attendance, 1 project) Cons: Strict attendance policy (you will be dropped). Just read and study!
Very straight forward class. Take Notes, read material and biweekly quizzes. You have 1 very easy paper. Commutative final, (that's so easy you don't even have to study). She provides the reading material for you. Anthro 104 is super interesting and Fonorow makes the class a breeze to take
She has the worst personality ever, take this class if you want to learn about her life. All she does it talk about herself then get mad at you for failing tests. The class is really hard. If she likes you, you'll pass. If she doesn't like you, it will be the worst class you'll ever take, and you'll probably get an f. She is awful.
If i had the chance to do it over, I would NOT take this class. Her tests are based on points in the readings that are very minor. It doens't make sense. She jumps all over the place in her lectures. She is extremely rude and arrogant unless you are her pet. If she were a man, I'd say the same things. I can't tolerate verbal mockery .
Very boring, lectures and outdated films. teacher not great. don't take it.
Can be a little rough at times in terms of conversation, but she is very knowledgeable on Anthropology and you can tell she has a very deep appreciation on it. There are weekly readings that you HAVE to read to pass the tests, but overall it's a solid choice for a class.
This professor is just utterly terrible. I'm sure she's a great person but having her answer your simple question is nearly impossible. She never does fully answer your question so it's extremely frustrating. I believe she's the only one teaching 102 but if you can take it with someone else. Her exams aren't that hard if you study the notes.
Just choose another professor, there is no point in arguing with her. In the end, it only matters what her mood dictates. The tests are unnecessary tricky, they don't really prove whether you understood the content or not. These are just about details of the readings and the "essay" questions have to be answered exactly as the ideas in her mind...
Dr. Fonarow is an amazing professor. Lectures are interesting and engaging. FULL DISCLOSURE: she has a strong personality, straight forward, and BE READY to STUDY!! I love professors that are straight forwards and know their material. If I was an Anthro major I would take all her classes!! DONT TAKE FOR EASY A! Grades are earned in this class.
I learned a lot in class. She knows her stuff. My only knock on her is she cant engage with a student before class starts. If asked a question she would get exasperated and dismissive. Students stopped asking for clarification. Like she had the lesson planned out & answering a question would throw her off? She was open to questions during lectures.
Passionate about cultural anthropology. Her class was a cost free textbook. She does give out a lot of reading, but its manageable. Don't be afraid of her, she is very nice. There are only three test including the final, a paper, and a family tree. You watch films once a week for case study. her class was easy, and she tries to make it interesting
worst teacher and class I have ever had. She is arrogant and narcissistic. She can barely look you in the face when talking. I have seen her sneer at students and was there when she caused the sweet gentle exchange student to cry. I couldn't concentrate after that. Her class is extremely boring. Take anything else if you can. do not waste you time.
Has an almost psychotically adversarial relationship with her students. It's like she's rooting for you to fail and seems almost disappointed when you don't. Has a ton of name-dropping stories about being a groupie, but seems to hate young people. I got a B+ but it was barely worth showing up.
SKIP THIS CLASS. Take anything else but this. She teaches as if you already know the basis of athro. we do not. teach us lady! she loves to talk about her phd but fails to realize we don't know the basics yet. I love school and studying but this was horrible. Yes she is narcisstic and tries to act like a teenager but mainly her teachings are bad.
i hated this class with all my passion. I thought anthropology sounded great but i was disappointed. i didn't like how this teacher, always talks about herself and wht she does with music and things. I don't care. She doesn't teach well at all. I wish I didn't take it. Now I am scared to ever take an anthro class again.
I took two of her classes and she is the best professor I have ever had in my life. I know that a lot of the reviews seem to paint her out in a negative light but she is truly an amazing and passionate professor. Please dont let the negative reviews detour you from her extraordinary classes. If you study, and pay attention then you will be fine.
Dr. Fonarow is a great professor and I highly recommend that you take her Anthropology 105 class! Her lectures are very interesting and if you put in the work and do the readings, you will succeed in this class. Also, her weekly quizzes make the final easier because you're tested on each unit.
The tests were difficult and the lectures are long. She is not a patient teacher, so dont ask a lot of questions esp before class. Be careful to call her doctor or she will get very angry. Other than that, do your work and remain quiet . if you choose to take this class, which i wish i had never done. I wish i had read these first.
Professor Fonarow is super friendly person. Her lectures are interesting and I learned so much in this class. People give her a bad rating because they either don't read or don't study. Her tests are not hard, its all based on the lectures and readings! She truly cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Just ask her for help!
I have taken 3 of Fonarow's classes and enjoyed every single one. I almost changed my major to anthropology because of her passion and insight on the subject. I would recommend popping into one of her office hours and talking to her about her classes rather than using this as the deciding factor. I personally think her classes are valuable to take
I love studying and reading so I thought I'd love this class but the teachers attitude was so bad that it overshadowed anything.i did all the readings and more but the tests were on random details .u can never predict anything. Im a sociology major so I should have loved this but as I said, this woman was like someone from a bad movie.
I read the "awesome' reviews here and decided to take the class but I was very disappointed. The teacher was not accessible and she berated a quiet student for calling her "professor" instead of "Dr.". I was actually embarrassed for the teacher when this happened. She is not accessible and blows you off when you try to ask questions. Skip this.
Dr. Fonarow was not my favorite at the beginning of the semester, but once we dived into the unusal, intriguing topics, it began to grow on me. This class was definiteley one of my most memorable ones. The reading will be overwhelming if you procrastinate them, quizzes once a week on the readings. you have to go to class her lectures are important.
Very good professor.
Had her for anthro 104. This class was an easy A for me, but if you are not good at following confusing lectures, this class will be impossibly hard. Her lectures are very tangential and it is hard to get out the main points sometimes. She also has a "research" project that is a lot of work and quite annoying and overall doesnt give you many points
By all means please do not take this class with Wendy. I took a once a week class with her maybe that was the mistake. The class was both very lecture and reading dense, it is hard to know what EXACTLY to memorize from the readings and lectures, in order to get a good grade on the test.
I question her credentials due to her word usage. She said AD stands for "After Death" not Anno Domini. She pronounces Guadalupe "Guada-loop." Her knowledge of magic, religion, and witchcraft is limited to the articles she assigns. When she lectures, she pontificates. She is narcissistic and doesn't allow room for correction. Will the semester end?
Dr Wendys anthropology 102 was the most organized class that Ive ever had. She cares about the students and does everything to clarify the subjects as much as possible. Best teacher so far
I love Prof. Fonarow! There were other students in my class who had taken ALL of the classes she offers because she's just THAT good. She is very interesting, knowledgeable & funny. She is a very hard grader, though. Tests are on class lectures and HUGE reading assignments. You will not pass if you don't show up to every class & do ALL the readings
Free readings posted on canvas. Lectures are very important. Weekly quizzes but there's no surprises. Do the readings and attend lecture and you'll do great, really not difficult. Extra credit is built into the quizzes. One project & presentation at the end of the semester.
Such an interesting class. Dr. Fonarow loves what she does and you can tell by her lectures. I recommend taking her class she has a lot of great stories.
The absolute worst professor/class. DO NOT ever think about taking this class. Most difficult class i've ever taken and she doesn't make it interesting at all. she has a horrible attitude and not friendly at all. If you're willing to completely give up on a social life, go on and take the class. you will regret it 100%. 1 star is too much for her.
Professor Fonarow cares about her students. She answers questions completely. She mispronounces some words like sakura. We have study guides but she forgets to update them every semester so students have to study information that's either not in the textbook or won't be on the exam.
Professor Fonarow is very nice and she is always available to help. This class is very interesting and contains a lot of information about so many different topics. However, sometimes her directions for assignments are vague and hard to understand. Also, you need to work for the "A" because there is lots of reading and writing involved.
Professor cares a lot about students, and is always willing to explain course concepts and readings. Professor is also willing to help with projects (only 2 in my class) and give advice.
Lectures are good and the material is interesting but grades very harshly along w seriously mean feedback. I'm a good student, I work really hard and have straight A's but this class wasn't for me.
Dr. Fonarow is an excellent instructor but skip her classes if you are expecting an easy A. She is clear about what she expects from her students and grades accordingly. Lots of readings and lectures, but they're fun and interesting. Take lots of notes to do well on her weekly quizzes and the final. Not sure why she gets a bad rap- she's great!
Professor Fonarow is a real gem. Her lectures are excellent, the topics we discussed are really interesting, and her class has been my favorite for the semester. She only assigns one homework assignment a week and a quiz right before class which is based on the readings. Make sure you take good notes and participate and you'll do just fine.
the course material is very interesting but the class is very rigorous. attendance with cameras on is basically mandatory, and she calls on people at random to answer. there are quizzes at the end of each unit about the unit as well as some of the next one, which can be annoying because they are timed. instructions can be vague too.
She has very strict with behavior and often calls you out for not knowing something when you are asking a question about something often singling you out and saying you are being incompetent in the class. She is very politically motivated and would make rants on things in the news to the class often getting angry if you step out of line with her.
She loves what she does BUT this class is hard. Like everyone else said, attendance is mandatory. You need your camera on. She favors those who do. Quizzes every week at the beginning of class based on reading and past week lecture. If you don't take great notes you're screwed because she won't post any powerpoints or lectures. Readings are hard!!
Prof. Fonarow is amazing. She is very knowledgeable and absolutely exceptional ; she is super professional, very supportive, and really loves her profession. The class is very interesting, she gives a lots of readings, but it is doable. If you want to understand what the anthropology is, you should definitely take her class.
Can come off as rude. It is hard to know what exactly to memorize from the readings and lectures, in order to get a good grade on the test because there's so much reading. Drown's students in reading material. I would suggest not taking this class if you don't want to be consumed by a large amount of work
Wow never wanted to leave a class more in my life. Very unprofessional and rude professor who does not know how to talk to her students respectfully. Very rare for a student to earn full points on an assignment. Please avoid her and DO NOT waste your time taking this course. The fact that her level of difficulty is 4.5 shows it all. RUDE WOMAN!!!!!
I hope the positive reviews get taken down because I think someone was playing a sick joke when they wrote them. This class will give you mental health issues. She is the rudest most unprofessional woman I have ever come across.
She is rude, inhuman, selfish, mean on another level. She does not care about the knowledge students might receive, only cares about dictating her rules and extremely unrealistic high expectations on the students. Being a professor of such subject, I am shocked at how insensitive she is towards other ethnicities and cultures, zero respect
I hope she gets fired
She makes anthropology fun and engaging, but there is A LOT of work for this class. She may come off as condescending, but she gives great feedback. She's very knowledgeable in her field and she provides extra credit in her assignments, but it's incredibly easy to fall behind. Even if you manage your time correctly, you'll still be struggling.
I took her for four weeks fully online in the spring and she treated us like robots. Her assignments are hefty and she is not an easy grader. Her recorded lectures are helpful until you take your test and receive a lousy grade. I def don't recommend her.
I have intentionally taken her for 2 classes and would take more if I needed them for credit. It can be hard to know what to remember from the readings for the exams but she doesn't expect to memorize specifics most of the time, more conceptual understanding. I have 0 idea why others say she is rude or condescending. That's not my experience.
This class was fun and engaging. If you do the work and follow directions, you will do well. Grades mostly come from exams and quizzes. She gives great lectures, answers questions thoroughly, and is easy to get in touch with if needed. Uses readings that are not textbook purchase. Anthro 104 is one of my favorite classes I've had at GCC!
I've taken anth105 with Dr. Fonarow twice and got an F the 1st time & a D the 2nd. It feels like she cares more about catching students who didn't read as thoroughly as she wants than making sure we grasp the info she's trying to teach. I've waited 2 years to retake this class with a different professor but sadly she's the only one who teaches it.
very bs and tedious assignments, do not take
Fonarow likely became a professor so that she could rally together a group of people that would be required to sit and listen to her talk and talk about herself. If you are looking to learn about anthropology, be warned that you will only learn about her. She automatically assumes the worst intentions of her students. Avoid at all costs.
Wow! I came back to review Dr. Fonarow and was so shocked to see the bad reviews. I showed up, learned about some amazing cultures, and easily got an A. I even took another class with her and it was great. She's incredibly inspirational, but I guess if you're lazy and don't want to do the work (two readings a week) you'll do badly. Thanks again!
Don't take her class she's lost cause.
She was nice, understanding, and funny. As long as you're passionate you'll be fine. However, being an online class be prepared to take pictures of her slides if you don't want to sit throughout the 3 hours of her class. Homework is rare, however, there are weekly quizzes before class and she wants you to read 3-4 articles for each quiz.
She is an amazing professor. I am a high schooler taking college classes, and she is one of the most understanding and helpful Professors I have had. She is happy to help students grasp concepts they do not understand and is very clear in her feedback. It is a fun class as long as you pay attention and do the assignments. Thorough not difficult
She's very intelligent and knows what she's talking about but for a linguistic anthropology professor she could be a lot more mindful of the tone she uses when speaking with students because she ( often) comes off as rude or condescending. She's got a huuuuge ego and will gladly take up class time to talk about herself instead of course materials.
She is very disrespectful professor and doesn't care about students at all, no matter you are sick or dying, all she cares is only herself! I don't recommend anyone to take her class! Also she wants to watch films that are not connected to anthropology at all, very bad quality movies which takes hours to watch. And in quizzes she asked every detail
She is very knowledgeable person, she's an anthropologist. I highly recommend taking classes with her and she is so open minded and experienced person.
Extremely frustrating class. Her standards are genuinely ridiculous and make no sense. She's so concerned with catching AI that a large swath of her assessment questions sound like word salad. Her whole MO is asking the stupidest questions as detailed as possible in a perpetual loop of "gotcha" moments. Insufferable, avoid at all costs.
Not sure how a corny groupie who can't spell became dept chair but avoid for your mental health. She's obsessed with herself and seeing others fail. Please read the bad reviews. I didn't and I regret it. I think she's posting the positive reviews herself bc there's just literally no way.
She is a fair grader and will give you feedback on how you can improve on the next assignment. She is tough sometimes especially if she sees people not paying attention in class. You have to do readings for each of the modules for the quizzes. She grades and responds quite quickly. Sometimes it is hard to understand the rubric.
