a very inspiring professor...a ton of reading, but i enjoyed her class
The readings are interesting, but her lectures seem like they last forever sometimes. Its an interesting class and she is a nice teacher. Her lecturing really bugs me. Just something to consider. There is not really a format to her lecture she just talks
She does give a lot of work, but she is one of the most awesome professors at UCD! :)
If you want to take a class with a CRAP LOAD of reading, then this class would be your best choice. Her lectures are so boring and she always goes on about herself and the decisions she's made in life. She's a nice person, but not a great professor.
Don't show up to the lectures unless a video is gonna be shown. She talks alot about nothing and he class is very reading intensive but if just read all of it, you are set for the midterm and final. I thought the class was easy, but i like reading.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had! She gives a ton of work and never explains the readings. The TAs are helpful, but all in all the class was tedious. I slept through every lecture, not because I was tired, but because it was soooo boring!!
This is one of the worst prof here. I know she trys but she is just not effective at teaching. Dont go to lectures, i've gone to 7 of them and i have a B, just do the readings (which is ALOT) but if you know your stuff on the reading you'll be fine
THis was by far the worst teacher i ever had. she is boring, uninspiring and can't teach. she doesn't talk about anything important in her lecture. dont go to the lecture unless there is a video. Make sure you go to discussion, you actually learn there.
LAme ass teacher, has conversations with the class instead of actially teaching. lectures suck and I neevr got anything out of them.
Useless lectures. The tests are multiple choice based on the readings, and are easy. The reading is intensive but fun and simple. The discussion sections were great. I enjoyed the class but she was not a good lecturer. At all.
Course is very interesting and inspiring. If you keep up with the reading you will be fine. Overall the class is good but the lectures are boredom at its worse, i would sit in the front row to make sure i wouldn't fall asleep.
Do the work & earn the grade. Great woman, very friendly. Cares a lot about what she teaches. Inspiring, and worth it.
Professor Ho is an interesting professor. The lectures were useless to go to since the midterms dealt with the readings. There is massive amounts of reading so be prepared to spend several hours reading. You write two essays for this class.
Prof. Ho assigns a LOT of (mostly interesting) reading, and she actually cares about her students. If you talk to her during office hours, she's really encouraging and inspirational.
Lots of reading in this class. If you like discussion classes, this is not it. She talks for almost the whole time, sometimes about her own experiences. Learned a lot in the class.
She doesn't know how to teach or give test. Her quizzes ask you the name of characters that are not important in the book instead of the main points of the book. So if you want to take this class take Gopinath over Ho. Ho is "ho"rrible!
TONS of reading... multiple choice tests,2 papers. Attendence was required. Lectures were disorganized but she has a passion for what she teaches and she really cares about her students.
this class was pretty good but there's enough reading for about one year. the reader (if you put both together) is like five inches thick and plus there's a bunch of books too. my god there was a lot of reading
She's passionate... but her tests are ridiculous. She gives a TON of reading (which is mostly interesting) and then asks stupid questions about it. Papers weren't difficult, although I thought the TA was nit-picky about very minor mistakes. Attendence is required. She has a great speaking style, but she just says the same thing repeatedly.
you said it, there was a lot of reading
You don't get anything from the lecture other than a sermon. Readings are RIDICULOUS. 2 huge readers and 3 actual books. Tests are open notes, but she asks ridiculous questions. With the massive amounts of reading, the tests are impossible to study for. Reader not very good with grading - very picky.
Horrible professor. The only thing I learned in her class was that it would have been better if I dropped her class the first day rather than suffer a quarter with her. She rambles A LOT and teaches absolutely nothing. Lots of dumb reading! Don't take her if you can avoid it.
she just used lectures to rant about things half related to the material, so i don't recommend going. midterms are based ONLY on the readings.. and there's a RIDICULOUS amount of reading. i nearly ran out of lecture frustrated every time i went. 2 papers, 2 midterms (midterms are worth more). definitely not worth it for just the 3 GE's.
Her class was pretty worthless to me - all she did was get fired up about Asian American rights, which i could have seen at a rally if I had chosen to do so. Do not take this class if you value your sanity. I got an A, but I dreaded going to class every single time. I disagree with the manner in which she singles out any white people in her class
I honestly have no idea what i learned in this class, but i got an A+. Lecture was never really structured and the tests were only about the reading (LOTS of reading) but you get to bring a page of notes for the tests. If you are looking to learn something, don't take this class. If you are looking for something easy, go for it.
this teacher is horrible. she gives speeches all class instead of actual lectures. likes to swear alot... like... irrationally. dont take this class if shes the teacher. youre gonna kill yourself
Too much talking about redundant topics. She hardly discusses each novel that we read in class. Overall, bad teacher and horrible lectures.
There is a lot of reading for this class. She rants during lecture and nothing she says is relevant to the novels and readers that we have to read. Every lecture I just want to get up and walk out because she's so frustrating.
Definitely a lot of reading for the class - expect on average about 30 pages between lectures, and double that for weekends. A lot of ranting, and tests are pretty hard, but she allows note usage, and revisions for lower grades/Extra credit. Really generous grading overall.
She insists that the terms she puts on the board will be huge hints on what will be on the test, but that's not the case. She let's you have 5 pages of notes for both exams, but some of the questions are still tricky. She also allowed us to get up to 15pts of extra credit. Her lectures are mostly rants, but there's also some summary of our readings.
Her midterm is hard but she gave extra credit. Her final is SUPER easy because the TAs give you a study guide that is almost the same as the final. If you do all the work that goes into the class I guarentee you'll pass with an A. She does rant but she is one of the few teachers that is passionate about what she teaches which is refreshing.
Prof. Wendy Ho is an amazing lecturer. She is by far one of my favorite Asian American Studies teachers on the UCD campus thus far. Her lecturers are all done orally, no powerpoints, just her talking to the class and keeping it real and Professor Ho's Asian American Women class definitely put a lasting impact on my view of ASA in a whole new light.
I think Professor Ho is a horrible teacher. She make fun of people and embarass them in class. She uses profanity sometimes during her lecture. Her ASA 112 course requires 3 textbooks and 2 course readers. It's the most reading I have done for 1 course. There are two 5-7 paged essays required. I personally did not like her as a teacher.
Ho has her own unique way of teaching, not v. structured but fired up & thought-provoking. Lots of reading but gives you the summary in every lec. MT/Final is all based on readings, w/ at least 1 question per reading but only worth 15/20% of grade. 50 qs/exam. Attendance is also 20%. If you enjoy passion & reading, take her class. Otherwise pass.
Rants on and on about the same things every lecture. Throws in unnecessary cuss words. Passionate about subject, but dull and repetitive. What she says in class is not on the exams, and exams are abstract and foreign. TAs really help. I had an awesome and he got us through just fine. Lectures are insanely boring.
like what others have said, she rants and cusses (maybe trying to be hip?). unhelpful... tests are MC but they're very detailed. i asked her about a question on the quiz that had to do with a color of a suitcase and she said she wouldn't throw trick questions in... yea right!
She cusses A LOT. Her lectures were mostly ranting and her opinion on things. There is a ton of reading which the tests are based off of. They were really easy tho. She allows a page of notes too. Her lecture style takes a while to get used to. This class, I felt, focused more on getting us to think about issues, than standard learning.
lectures are pretty much pointless (she summarizes readings & her point of view), but she may give hints for the tests. MC tests based off readings (allowed cheat sheet) are not tricky. essays not too difficult. the class not lecture-based; its more discussion and critical thinking.
ONLY take this class if you love reading. You have to read A LOT for this class. Lectures are pointless..you might as well not go. you are allowed a cheat sheet on all of the exams. The essays are pretty easy on my opinion.
Very passionate in topic. Don't go to lecture, it is pointless. Discussion is usually pointless too but you have to go. Lots of reading but they are interesting. Essay is easy. Cheat sheet on exams allowed.
She has the most confusing/hard to read syllabus known to man.
Assumes her class is your only class. Her tests hardly have to do with lectures, and have to do more with the 200+ pages of reading she assigns every week. She is completely redundant and hypocritical in her lectures. I changed the title on my binder from "Woman's Studies" to "Professor Ho's Opinions".
I thought she was amazing. Very inspiring and I was interested throughout the whole class. People say it is a lot of reading but she goes over all of it in class and if you pay attention the tests are EASY. Critical thinking is all you really need for them. I highly suggest taking her class and going in with an open mind.
She is very clear on what exactly you will be tested on. TAs are great and if you're lucky, she will give handouts that are super helpful for the exams. This class is a LOT of reading, but the material, or at least the novels she assigns, are really interesting. Overall, does her best & your grades mostly reflect how much time you put into them.
She is a great professor and passionate. WAY TOO MUCH READING though. For the most part the reading is super boring. This class is not an easy A. You need to actually study. Fairly easy, and you know whats on the exams. you must be asleep or never attend class to get anything below a B.
I actually came to really love this class. Professor Ho is really passionate and keeps you interested. Not hard to get an A in the class if you do the readings (there are ALOT) and do well on the papers. For the final she gave us a cheat sheet which was great..and her multiple choice tests are pretty easy. They grade papers pretty hard.
An easy class if you are willing to do your work. She is very clear on what she wants out of her students, but that translates to a lot of reading. An inspiring class if you choose to really care and pay attention to the material. Midterms and finals are hilariously easy if you just do the study guides.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She will put you to sleep during lecture so don't bother going. She just yells at you the entire time and it's impossible to take notes. I spent every lecture doodling or on my phone. I also made a ninja star and then thought about throwing it at her. Insane amount of reading but the exams are based entirely off of them.
TONS OF READING for this class, about 50 pages of reading for every lecture. ASA with Ho is one of the hardest intro classes. Tests are multiple choice and there are two moderate length essays.
Yes, professor Ho is very into the material. However, her lecture is entirely opinion based and pretty useless when it comes to studying for midterms and the final. There is also A LOT of reading.
Her lectures are very interesting and she is very enthusiastic about what she teaches. She's very helpful and my TA was super helpful. the class is super interesting. This class is not easy though. I skimmed readings and read some thoroughly and got a B-
Her lectures are absolutely pointless the only real reason Ito go is for the handouts she would give. She claims cares for critical thinking yet the midterm and final are multiple choice. The amount or reading is absolutely ridiculous! The amount of reading is absolutely ridiculous! Trust me and please save your self don't take this class!
Oh No, forget this lady. She made my life hell. Never take any class with her, it's a warning. Her lectures are boring as hell, she only gives her opinion and doesn't give actual facts. Her exams are stupid pointless, I honestly don't know how she became a Professor, Just don't take her especially all the reading she makes you do is a bit crazy.
TONS of readings! And she often goes off on random rants about life. This quarter her favorite lines are "Don't be Spongebobs! Or Walking Dead!" Sometimes going to lecture is totally useless. But then there are other times when she is focused and actually explains/clarifies the readings.
She's such a wonderful lady. The textbook she used was very relevant and great for the class. She was very relatable and understanding.
So hard to follow her lectures. Every time I actually went to class I ended up not being able to take any notes because she speaks SO unclearly. Tests are pretty easy though
Lectures are confusing and boring, I gave up on going at all. A looot of readings too, however tests are multiple choice and super easy if you keep up with the readings and do her handouts. There are 2 5-page papers, overall an OK class, pretty easy to get a B, if you put a little bit more effort in you can definitely get an A.
She is amazing to listen to. My favorite class ever. Very discussion based. No tests. Three short papers (possibly creative project substitute), a group project, and two short write ups of your choice. Do your best to read, and talk with her if things come up. She can be flexible with assignments. She's not out to fail you, but you have to try hard
Great teacher to take. Talks about the importance of effort and learning with passion. Love to take another class with her.
Tough class with a lot of material. Although much of it is dry, you will learn a lot, probably more than you should in a single 10 week class. Tests are straightforward and follow the reading she assigns.(which is a ton)
Super inspirational! Loved this class, though she tends to ramble on about the same things for the first half hour of every class. Midterm and final are both multiple choice (45 &50 questions) and are easy IF you do the reading. DO THE READING (there's a lot!!!), though the way the questions are structured isn't too hard to guess. 2 5-7 page papers
Just do all of the required readings and attend lecture; she is essentially the study guide for the exams. Pay attention. She also gives actual study guides that help refresh your memory. If you review, you won't have much trouble for the multiple-choice exams. Participation matters during the discussion period. There are also two 5-7 page essays.
Prof Ho is one of the worst lecturers I've ever had in my three years at UC Davis. Do not take her class. ASA 1 with her was extraordinarily difficult, and I've been taking upper division classes in ethnic studies for two years. She cannot explain things simply; she always has to take the long way around answering a straightforward question.
ASA 1 is the best class I've taken so far. Prof. Ho is very passionate in her teaching, and I suggest you participate, ask questions, answer questions, sit near the front to be engaged in the course as she can go on tangents. This course will fulfill a lot of GE, but you got to work for it! A lot of reading and 2 Papers, Discussion worth a lot.
Personally, I didn't enjoy this class. While TAs were very helpful and kind, Professor Ho tended to go on angry rants during lecture. She's very passionate, but she would digress from the readings and run out of time educating us on the history. Tests were relatively easy if you did the readings...4 or 5 20 pages readings per week that is.
She is passionate, but style of instruction and evaluation is not reasonable. No PPT, substantial readings. MCQ can be ridiculously tricky, and the ambiguous wording remind me of SAT. In discussion, you have to talk to get the points. The evaluation of paper totally depends on your TA, which could be subjective. Remember you have other GE options!
You have a LOT of readings every week. The midterms, final, and papers (2) are based on these readings! She repeats what is important in lecture so you can't miss it! Participation in discussion is a must for points. GO TO THE TA for help on the 2 papers! It makes a huge difference. I went from a C+ (1st paper) to B+ (2nd) after meeting w/ the TA.
Oh my god this has probably been my worst experience ever as a student. She rambled on and on n on during lectures; about topics just barely related to the material. I tried to take notes, but honestly there was no point. There are wayyy too many readings to stay caught up on and they're quite lengthy. Tests are on ALL readings. Not worth it. AVOID
omg worst prof I've ever had. She literally talks in riddles and there is so much reading and theyre difficult. She pins you into going to lecture cause participation is 30% and 3 other papers plus final. I literally can never follow her at all! AVOID!!! Pretty much my entire class dreaded her and the material.
Wendy Ho is definitely a professor who cares about her students. She is accessible, approachable, hilarious, passionate and truly a one of a kind professor. She takes the time to get to know her students and is encouraging. Yes, her assigned readings and essays are challenging, but she teaches so much and is a great resource. I loved this class.
Professor Ho's lectures are convoluted and w/o structure. She gives nearly no opportunities for student involvement. That said, she is truly passionate about her work and her students and it shows in the lengthy and helpful feedback she gives on the four essays she assigns. The readings are amazing, it's just too bad we don't get to discuss them.
She is really passionate about her work, but she had a habit of getting off topic during our almost 2hr class. We would always be behind on readings and assignment because of this. As a result we had both our essay #2 and final essay due during finals week. Again, nice and passionate lady, just needs more class structure.
passionate about Asian American Studies but she repeats stuff a lot. 2 papers, one midterm and one final. lots of books to read and midterm/final are primarily based on the books and supplementary readings she assigns. DO THEM!! not covered too much in lecture. Overall pretty easy class, nothing special though. discussion participation matters too.
I really enjoyed her class. Really enthusiastic about what she does. There are a lot of readings, but she goes through important aspects and themes and events of every reading in lecture anyway, so it wasn't as bad as the syllabus makes it out to be. Attend lecture, she gives out certain hints for exams. DO THE STUDY GUIDES.
Prof Ho was an ok professor. Not as bad as everyone claims her to be. She's just super boring and kind of repeats herself a lot. Her TAs were the best though. The tests were also pretty easy, average was a B. Shes clearly passionate about the subject and I will admit that I did learn a lot from her and the class. But DO THE READINGS & STUDY GUIDE.
Professor Ho gives good lectures. I've really learned a lot from her lectures and assignments. But assignments and readings are kinda heavy.
Gave lectures that were repetitive and went off on unrelated tangents for long portions of class. A lot of reading. Study guides were often nonsensical and seemed to be thrown together last minute. She often called people out in class, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for discussion. Do not recommend.
There is a lot of reading in this class, but she is a pretty lenient professor in terms of grading. Midterm and final were multiple choice (she gave some freebie questions) and they are all based on the study guide that comes from the readings. The essays were graded by TAs. I think it's a reasonable GE class to take if you are looking for credit.
There is a lot of reading in this class, and there is a lot to note down since lectures are not recorded and there is no lecture slides available to follow. Take note of the stuff she repeats a lot since they are the big questions on the exams (mix and match w/ short reponce at the end). Essays are quite lengthy, with most info from lectures.
shes very passionate about her topics but her lectures have no real order, structure, or clarity. the midterms and finals are 100% based on the study guides and the study guides are based on the readings. theres so many readings per week that its near impossible to stay on track. i still got an A from relying on the study guides during exam season.
grade consist only of participation, 2 papers, a midterm & a final. this class is only for those that excel in humanities. the ideas presented are very complex and you have to analysis quite deeply. there are too many readings, all very hard to dissect. was able to pass doing only 5 of the readings bc my class created study guides for the exams.
There is a lot of reading and she repeats her lectures, but she is very understanding when it comes to individual circumstances (she didn't mark down my papers even though they were super late) and she puts out study guides for every text that we go over, so even if you don't do the readings completely you can still ace the midterms!
I guess a pro of this class was that I was able to make up a lot of sleep debt cuz this class was a snoozer. Got a B in the class and honestly that's just cuz I was lazy. The midterms aren't free but they aren't that hard. Few essays we had to write but TAs graded them fairly. Very passionate professor? idk was sleeping tbh. Had to read books
Her lectures are very long and there are a lot of readings assigned. The midterm and final are both okay, as long as you skim the content of the readings. The papers aren't so bad either. Good GE if you're okay with reading a lot and writing papers.
