overall great prof
Taken her class twice. Did heavy studying, still did bad. I doubt it's JUST me.
Great prof, very approachable, likes to get to know you on a first name basis.
Man, she's real nice, and her Ralph Lauren skirt and pink shirt is cool!
I really can't hear what she's talking about in EVERY SINGLE lecture. She's just like talking to herself...
Want my opinion? Drop it and take it in fall instead...
Some people should not be allowed to teach... she expect too much in a second year course!!!
She explains things to quickly and too generally..give us some time to get new material through our heads instead of rushing through pretending we are 4th year micro students...
I cant understand a thing she says. Her lectures are disorganized. I am screwed for her part of the final
She's awful! If I see another diagram I am going to explode!
She just doesn't seem to have any effective ways of getting her message accross. I've had three weeks with this prof, and after each class I feel like I have learned nothing.
Her notes don't make sense and have NO order to them. I couldn't follow her teaching style at all.
She was very helpful, nice and patient.
Good prof, enjoyable lectures, but not the best teaching style for sure.
needs to clarify her teaching style. She had a lot of material to teach, but presented it in an almost random order. Reviewing the notes confused me further. She is knowlegable, and very nice.
hard to follow, everything was extremely random.
Absolutely wretched! All over the place; not helpful at all; can't pronounce "a-MEE-no" acid. Just plain bad...
RANDOM its the word of the day along with amino

no good, unorganized, too muddled, maybe she knows her stuff, but she didn't help us to know it.
Unclear, unorganized, terrible notes. Lectures were confusing and non-sequential. There was no way of knowing what she was discussing because of the way she flipped from one topic to another.
Very unorganized in notes and speaking style. She knows the material but seems to have trouble conveying it to us! Bring a tape recorder to class and MAYBE you'll catch all the stuff she says to fix your notes later.
Although her notes were not the greatest you simply have to listen to what she says and write that down. She knows her stuff and tells you what you need to know. Seemed a little grouchy but it was an 8:30 class so I was grouchy too!

lectures were hard to follow. all points in random order. notes unhelpful.
Time to Change my Major
She may know the material, but I definitely don't. She is grumpy, not well organized and does not know how to convey material.
her slides are unhelpful and hard to read. she never remembers to put them up on BOTH sides, so it makes it even harder to read that tiny font. plus, she spends too much time giving us, indeedly interesting, information that we _DONT NEED TO KNOW_. Overly annoyed at her
No Comments
Not the best teacher that I've ever had. She's pretty grumpy, and quite confusing. I also believe she tells us way to much information, and we dont need to know most of it.
She had the most direct method of conveying her ideas of all the biology profs. I found the material that she taught very easy to comprehend, which means she must be doing something right! All - in - all, a good professor!

OMG she is SO BORING... And she is SO GRUMPY... Every time you ask her to slow down she's like OH YOU SHOULD JUST COPY DOWN THE IMPORTANT STUFF...But nothing on her slides seem all that important..
some things WE should teach HER: don't teach us what we explicitly DON'T need to know! organize your freakin' slide show! i'm glad i learned most of this already, cuz i didn't know anyone could make such a mess of cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
SMILE! Cuz she never did. Alright, if we "don't need to know this stuff, but know that this is (insert random stuff here)" then why not put THAT on the slideshow, not the unimportant stuff. DUH? Well whatever, she's the only one to insist u use the text, and i didn't like her sections. BOO
The Queen of "Well, this does this to this because of this, but only pay attention to this little bit that I said briefly but never emphasized, you don't need to know anything else" And guess what shows up on the exam?!?!?! She must be smart, though, if she made it this far....
horrible prof. she mispronounces so many words, her notes are random, she didn't even write her own notes, she gave off the impression of not knowing what she was talking about.
this class frustrated me more than anything! It bothered me how she treated us like little children and sat on her desk because a few people in the back were talking, i'd rather her just leave the classroom and get someone else to teach us.
Her lectures are all over the place, which makes it difficult to understand her notes. Can't seem to develop a good rapport with the students. Her pronounciation of certain words will drive you crazy after a while.
Ms. Monotone. It’s a tragedy that she gets to teach/screw-up two sections. One is bad enough. "You don't need to know what I've just spent 20 minutes on, just the one sentence I muttered quickly and refuse to repeat." ****y to students too. Cross her part off your exam and try for the rest. Ugh.
Really poor testing plan. Very difficult to study for, and tricky marker. Plus, bloody boring.
She is one of the most structured, fairest and easy to follow microbiology profs we have. She is very approchable and helpful.
really hard to know what's important in her lectures and what can be skipped--you're guaranteed some of the most RANDOM exam questions EVER!!!!!!
terrrrrible!

Spends a lot of time on stuff we explicitly don't need to know, and then more time telling us we don't have to know it. I would have preferred to have just been responsible for it all and actually learned something. Started the 4th module "I was asked to teach this section, so I read a book on it"
not organized, her notes were all over the place. students didnt respect her because of this.
Ah-mee-no. Fun-gee. Vee-sic-les. In other words... NO. Hated her "I talked about this all class and you must remember the one word I'm not going to remind you of."
I felt like asking her in her question period: "Where the hell did you learn to pronounce amino?" She's playing the professor evaluation system, wih her buzz sessions, and question periods, because that's what she's evaluated on. Bad prof.
She is a little monotonious and not very enthusiastic about the subject. However she DOES say that things she doesnt cover in lectures won't be covered on the exam. She also lets you know specifically things you need to know and dont need to know in detail for the exam. Classes are kinda boring though.
She was so wonderful! She had a grading system favorable to all. She taught the material very well, and enhanced my understanding of material learned prior to this course. I would love to have her as a prof again. Exams were fair, and not too bad in length.
At first I wasn't pleased with her, but the more you have her, the more you grow attached. Now I can't say anything bad about her. I really wish she taught Microbial ecology. As for complaints of her notes being unorganized, you just have to get used to her style. She is one of the better profs at the University (for Micro) :(
No Comments
She is an amazing professor!! Super helpful, and is very approachable and friendly!! The course wasn't easy but she made things a lot simpler to understand which is always good! Very enthusiastic about the material, and obviously loves what she's doing!
Not very organized, and rather grumpy. Tells you pretty much exactly what she expects you to know for exams, so her section isn't very hard.
Wendy is a wonderful person, she's very approachable, and encourages students to come speak to her about micro by offering bonus marks. However, her teaching is very unclear and she expects you to grasp very minute concepts from a sea of information which she presents. OFTEN will ramble on for 15 min and then say "You don't really need to know that
Very monotone and grumpy. Her notes and class aren't very organized.
she is very. unclear and difficult to follow in class. her notes are not helpful at all
she was all over the place with her notes and the lectues jumped around to much. I along with the majority of people became confused and bored, but she is a nice person
Keenleyside was totally cool. I loved her teaching style...I didnt think she was all over the place. .I found that she spoke at a really good pace and some of the stuff she said was pretty intresting. She was one of my favorites, just pay attention to what she says.
Professor Keenleyside is very random. Her lectures are not organized, and follow no logical pattern, making it impossible to study! She had this attitude as though she would rather be anywhere else on the planet. Luckily, she's one of four teaching this course, and is only there for about 10 lectures. If you go to lectures, you will do fine.
Great professor! Very helpful, and easily approachable. A welcome lecturer in the higher level Micro major classes. Notes are straightforward, and presented well. Shows genuine interest in teaching the material.
Amazing prof. She makes the subject so interesting I've decided to make it my major.
She was really nice, had the most unorganized notes I have ever seen(making it hard to study) She also had some tricky worded questions on the midterm/final.
Awesome teacher! Her notes were clear, everything that was on the midterm was in our notes at some point and the wording was clear. Really enjoyed her module. Also, she's hot! Love a woman with a Ph.D ;)
All science students have to take this course, which is why it is sad it is so awful. Keenleyside's notes are horrible, contain useless information, and all the information you need to know she puts in online modules. So be prepared to read everything of actual importance and hear a lot about her research, which is about bacteria. ENJOY!
I used to be a germophobe but now I NEVER WASH MY HANDS!Thanks for teaching me that microbes are fun!
Hands down one of the best profs I have had. Lectures very clear and knows her stuff! Midterm and Final were fair and all based on lecture, don't really need textbook. very helpful prof. Doesn't want students to memorize, wants them to actually understand the material. Definitely would recommend her for micro.
Successful, intelligent wonder-woman! This class was hard, only essay answers on the final and group projects, but these new concepts are fundamental to advanced microbiology, life science and the environment. Unlike any other courses offered, very worthwhile expirience. Don't miss a class, sometimes scattered lectures.
great
Great prof! Material was organized, interesting, and clearly presented. Sometimes her MC questions were unclear, but overall her tests - though challenging - were very fair.
Countless assignments. Messy lectures. Unapproachable.
Fantastic prof, an inspiration! Know that her awesome dedication and commitment to teaching students like me is appreciated. Thanks so much Dr. Keenlyside!
She's a good prof and tries her best to explain things, but her lectures always seemed to be very jumbled and confusing. The worst was her testing - brutal questions and only a few of them in total, so if you get one wrong your grade drops significantly.
Hands down the craziest prof. She likes to preach about metacognition for like 40 minutes of class and spends 10 minutes on the actual MICROBIOLOGY CONTENT! She does not believe in teaching basically and makes you do hours assignments and readings. Every time i'm in the lab and think of her i want to eat pathogenic bacteria.. good luck
Only cares about teaching learning methods and psychology, almost seems like teaching us microbiology is something she hates and has to get through until she can talk more about metacognition. She actually made 2 out of 14 midterm questions about psychology not microbiology. She wants you to learn everything on your own at home.
By far the worst professor I have ever had the experience of knowing. She is so lazy and goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the course. I did not get into microbiology to learn about freaking metacognition. If you take this class get ready to have a panic attack at least once a week!
She puts in a lot of effort - which just makes the fact that she's an incredibly inefficient teacher very frustrating. She uses 5 or so different tech platforms - none of which work smoothly. Questions are incredibly unclear and vague, and she's unable to explain her reasoning. Very stubborn and unwilling to accommodate different learning styles.
She tries, but she's inefficient. Seems to think that we have no other classes to study for apart from MICR. Most content is in the modules, which are dense and take hours to get through (even though they're like 20 mins). Very unclear about what she's going to test you in the REEF polls, and tests are brutal.
She's a really great prof and clearly loves the material. Her tests are hard but if you pay attention in class and read the material outside of class, you can do very well. I loved the material as well; easily one of my favourite courses in uni. Have fun reading all the primary literature, though!
She loves learning strategies to the detriment of the material - her tests are probably some of the hardest I've ever done, simply because she insists on making the questions as vague and unclear as possible, with intentional trip ups in the wording. "choose the most correct answer".
A lot of work for one course. Tests are difficult, as are lab quizzes. Questions are vague, always "pick the most correct" answer.
Out of all my professors at Guelph during my undergrad, she was the worst. Sloppy, unclear notes. Sloppy, unclear lecture style. She makes a "hit-list" but then tells you not to study from it and to follow "the learning pyramid" and her learning outcomes. Also has so many third party learning programs it just becomes a convoluted mess. Have fun!
She was very rude and generally does not treat others the way she expects to be treated. Avoid her if you can.
Dr. Keenleyside is extremely approachable and does an amazing job focusing on what is important and going to be tested in class. Although group participation is kind of annoying, that's real life! Gotta work together. I would recommend attending lectures but she usually posts videos. Y'all have to pay attention, she's really nice and funny!
Makes the midterm out of 14 marks and the final only has 30 multiple choice (which are extremely difficult) as well as an "individual assignment" so you have to study and research before taking the final. The questions are not only difficult but she also tests you on random aspects so its hard to succeed even if you know what's going on.
Overall the lectures were quite interesting and she did a great job of explaining things. She also records all her lectures so you can go back and catch things you missed. Her exams are hard since all the questions are "thinking questions", and there's only a handful of them so if you're missing just 1 little component, you lose a lot of marks.
Prof Keenleyside like everyone says is a pretty hard prof because every exam is "choose the most correct" and there are only a few multiple choice. However she does give quiet a few free marks throughout the semester. She teaches the way she does because she wants you to learn and understand instead of memorize which I appreciate! She is very kind.
Not very informational, tests you very heavily.
Lecture notes are unorganized and hard to follow. Very difficult to study in this class, as you really have no idea what to expect on her tests. Testing is very hard, midterm had only 11 MC questions and a 3 mark short answer component. All MC questions are 'higher level' thinking questions. Overall, not an enjoyable experience, try to avoid!
She thinks her teaching style works. It does not. The assignments and lectures are incredibly convoluted, she condescends to the entire class, and she does little to no actual teaching. Someone should really tell her sending out a list of 50+ terms every week does not qualify as teaching. Can they take away PhDs?
The course layout is confusing and the questions asked makes you sit in the room thinking "why am i here". The textbook will always be there to answer your questions whereas she can sometimes disappear
Spend $130 on the textbook and keep up with the work if you want to have hopes of getting a good mark. The reviews listed here say it all. Going on vacation the weekend before the class writes an exam is also not the smartest idea. When going into this course, form a study group, read the textbook and make sure you know the lab manual inside-out.
Amazing prof, great teaching style. Her tests and questions make you think but will never go out of context from what she has taught/said in class. Really need to listen carefully in lectures, make notes, and do all that she says. Keeping up with the weekly stuff is essential to do well, but really inspiring! She's very nice even outside of class.
I liked her. But now, I love her and Microbial Ecology. Her passion for this field is contagious. There are few opportunities to get easy grades while exams are the usual toughness and group project was the usual easy-going. It is fundamentally important to do what she says; i.e. Read articles she assigned. Makes life easier.
Lecture slides were sparse and disorganized with little to no supplementation through her lecturing. We were told not to learn off of the textbook, yet she asked us questions that we could only know if we had memorized off of the readings. She was not supportive in our learning and her lack of clear teaching negatively affected grades.
This is by far the worst prof I have ever had. The midterm was based on extremely specific information that she talked about in class, but can't be found anywhere in her lecture slides. The first 30min of her 50min lecture is spent explaining a REEF polling question that has nothing to do with the actual material of the course. :(
DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT SAYS SHE IS A GOOD PROFESSOR. I warn you not to take courses with her. She is extremely confusing during her lectures, and is terrible at explaining concepts. If you have any questions, I suggest you keep them to yourself as you will end up more confused than you already were. If you have a class with her, good luck.
She tries very hard and puts a lot of effort into her teaching style, it just doesn't work. There's usually at least 3 things due a week because there are so many little assignments and quizzes worth like 1%. She does little to know actual teaching and expects students to learn it all outside of class which just doesn't work.
She thinks she has a superior method of teaching but it's downright bad. She puts only "higher level thinking" questions on the midterm & final and tries to make you think in lecture but it leaves you confused. Her slides have little content making textbook readings a must. You can tell she's trying to teach but it doesn't work.
Talks more than what is on the slides, taking notes is important, but she records the lectures. It is hard to tell what chapter she is teaching and when there is a transition to a new topic.
Her method of teaching just doesn't work. She makes you do a "case study" for probably a third of the semester that's strictly group work. She does little to no actual teaching and expects you to come to class having already taught yourself the material. Definitely the worst prof and class I've had. I like micro but she makes it hard to like.
Very messy lecture structure. Really all over the place. Material consists of a collection of random and seemingly unconnected facts. Hard to study for. Can't really say it lays a foundation for understanding rather than just makes you (try to) memorize a ton of information. Would try to avoid her as a teacher but it will definitely be difficult
-knowledgable about what she teaches -free online textbook -gave good opportunities for getting marks. -she used a group quizzing system that did not allow me access to my accommodations provided by SAS -sometimes I felt her email correspondings were less than friendly -was not always helpful when I had questions or administrative issues
I have tried to enjoy having her as a prof and follow all direction she gives (readings, articles, homework practice) and even though I do all those things, the answers to her questions can't be found in course resources. If you ask her for clarification to a question that can't be found anywhere, she acts like you're wasting her time.
The lectures are very hard to follow and are extremely unorganized. She is knowledgeable but is unable to present this in a way students can understand and when asked questions she contradicts herself.
Disorganized lectures, exam questions are super complicated and not based on anything in the lectures or textbook. Didnt allow me SAS accommodations for disability and accused me of using them to cheat. Rude in emails and condescending in class. Worst prof ever!!
She bases her teaching methods off of a video that suggests including active learning to supplement teaching with things like clicker questions helps understanding. But, she takes this to mean asking questions is a substitution for teaching. Even when proven by her students time and time again that this is ineffective, she is unwilling to change.
A lot of people have bad things to say about Keenleyside but she is one of the best profs I have ever had. Extremely helpful and accessible. If you need help she's more than happy to help you. her exams are hard because she wants you to actually learn rather than memorize. has a passion for teaching and is a great person, def do the learningoutcome
She is one of my favourite profs! Her class was extremely organized and clear. She does everything she can to provide real learning opportunities because she clearly cares about her students, which in turn makes them respect her. The class makes it easy to participate in discussions and speak up if you don't fully understand something.
Drags out lectures, no clear idea of what to study and makes exams very difficult. AVOID!!
Hilarious, brilliant, kind. Encourages greatness from her students! Found we couldn't afford micro text, so made a free open access one herself. Poor reviews are from biomed kids who are used to grade inflation that took MICRO*2420 for "easy elective" and think memorizing old midterms is learning. If you want a high GPA, don't major in micro.
Her tests are hard, but they're not unfair. If she sees a question was too hard, she's reasonable and will remove it from the grading. She's a very caring prof and she wants to help students actually learn instead of memorize, and she will go out of her way to explain things better if students are confused.
Idk how, but somehow she made a science class subjective. She wouldn't let us see what mistakes we made on the quizzes and she would say things like "technically that's right, but it's wrong". The way she worded her questions would give them multiple interpretations, making it hard to get a good grade. She is very caring, but not great at teaching.
Dr. Keenleyside genuinely cares about her students. She always responds to emails quickly, and gives good feedback when you ask for help. This being said, her tests can be kind of unfair and lectures are presented in a confusing manner. She provides "learning outcomes" which are very helpful for the quizzes. In class participation is mandatory.
I really like Dr. K, she's very approachable and caring. If you take issue with anything (marking scheme, weird wording on an assessment) she WILL listen to you. You can tell she's teaching because she enjoys micro. The course content is easy BUT - if you don't keep up with the required homework, your life will be VERY difficult (flipped format)
Contradicts herself and lectures are all over the place. She doesnt let you see what you got wrong on quizzes and not to mention, higher level multiple choice the entire semester isnt going to teach much in the real world. Interesting content but the teaching style just isnt working.
I have been in post-secondary for 5 years across 2 schools and this is hands down the worst course and teacher I have ever had. Her flipped format of teaching is awful and she's terrible at explaining and answering questions. If you are someone who struggles with time management and stress, be prepared to cry because you will have a bad time here
A lot of people don't like the flipped course format but if you watch the lectures ahead of time and come to seminars you will do well. She is also available outside of class and has offered to set up one on one help through emails. I think many people dont like the fact that you cannot memorize the content but just put in the work and its not bad.
If you have other classes that require a lot of time and attention in the semester, do NOT take this class with this professor. I have taken double credit courses that require less work, not to mention the very little payoff for the amount of work you do. Her entire course design feels like a psychological experiment.
Straight up terrible class format. Not everyone wants to do group work and it is not fair to force students to have to do group work even on the exam as well as a take home exam question to be done beforehand. We are busy enough. The seminars were not explained well, confusing and drawn out. The only good thing to come was the lab experience.
Problem-solving styled lectures. Need to watch multiple lectures in order to understand weekly lectures.
This professor was not helpful when answering questions and was very condescending when students tried to ask for help. Quiz questions are not a good reflection of content learned in lecture. The content of the course was interesting but the way it is presented is awful.
She puts very little effort into writing questions. She is not clear in answering questions. Her MCQs will often rely on small details that dictate the answer, but sometime those details will be included and she doesn't realize: meaning you can never be sure what the answer actually is.
Dr. Keenleyside is an excellent professor who inspires me to embrace learning and apply my knowledge. She's patient and caring.
She is very sadistic. She enjoys making tricky quiz Qs that only make sense to her. She recycles lecture videos from 5 years ago and gives us several quizzes, labs, group projects and assignments to do all worth such little marks. She makes it extremely hard to score well & this course takes SO much effort and time. She also favors some students.
It's almost as if you're expected to read her mind. Every single question is designed to mess you up. If you think you've solved a question, choose the opposite. Every questions is worded funny and you have to sit there and guess what it means. No matter how much work you do, your grade wont reflect it. Good luck for anyone heading this way lol.
Never take a class with her, she's not good at all. She expects you to do all of her assigned readings, this is not a DE course. She won't even teach you the material properly during class time. She is very judgemental too, will give you hell if you choose to ask for a assignment deadline. Horrible prof.
I feel horrible writing a bad review because she is such a sweet person, but she is a horrid professor. You can tell she is passionate about microbiology but she makes it so hard to understand. Tests feel like they are meant to trip you up and her lecture slides are impossible to follow. If this course is not mandatory for you, do not take it.
I actually don't know what her goal is with this class. Everyone is complaining about the same things, so you'd THINK that she'd alter her ass-backwards teaching style. But no. She slates us with quizzes designed to trick us, and assigns a multitude of assignments worth next to nothing. I feel like I know less having done this class.
The worst course I have taken so far. Chaotic course. You have to do a million readings, lectures, seminars, case studies and other miscellaneous stuff to maybe get a 70 on the quizzes because of the way minute details will mess you up. The bonus quiz on the course outline had people doing 30+ attempts, for a 50 tops. Don't take unless you have to.
It took forever to get grades back in this class and everything is marked really hard. We had a flipped classroom and our in person lectures reviewed material from our quizzes but she didn't cover everything in the lectures. Would try and avoid her if possible lol
I took MICR2420 (Intro to Microbio) and I loved Dr. K's lectures. She teaches in a way that not only makes it clear she really loves her field, but also that she loves to teach. There is a LOT of content and some of her exam questions are tricky. If you don't put in the work to actually study you probably won't do too well.
All I can say is terrible. AVOID!!
Course content is interesting and provides a strong foundation for applied research. Dr Keenleyside show empathy and at the same time motivated me to study diligently.
You can tell she cares about her field however, it doesn't translate well in her "lectures". I wish she went through concepts more clearly but she just kind of assumed we were all experienced 30 YO's in the microbio field. I believe she teaches 2430 every year so you kind of have to deal with it. I have her for 3420 this year, not excited...GL.
Avoid at all costs. No one knows what's going on in her "lectures", might be the worst instructor I've ever had. Somehow she teaches 3420 worse than 2430.
Dr. Keenleyside's lectures have the rigor that I expect as a student. Her explanations of concepts are clear and provide more than enough detail. A great prof and mentor!
idk what to say for difficulty cause while its not hard to get a decent grade in this class, i can honestly say i havent learned a thing. wendy tries to confuse and "outsmart" students with how she writes questions rather than test your knowledge. information is scattered btw videos/tutorials/textbook/random documents so u never know whats going on
I really enjoyed this course more than I thought I would. Dr. K definitely knows what she's talking about, and her quizzes and exam really reflect the readings/lectures to a T. I found the labs, group case study, and group quizzes entertaining and helped me to understand the topic. Most of what you learn has to be applied instead of memorized.
Teaching style is less like teaching, more like DIY. The seminars test the basic content, but the tests are different comparitively. Would not recommend taking if you already have a heavy courseload.
I enjoyed Dr. Keenleyside's teaching approach. I could tell that she wanted to encourage us to learn and retain the foundational concepts , and most importantly apply our knowledge. She has a caring vibe, which makes it easy to approach her for guidance. Enjoyed her course and look forward to enrolling in the other courses that she teaches.
She's very nice herself and passionate about the content but asks second-year students advanced level questions that require almost graduate-level thinking, expecting fully developed answers. It's like asking a fifth grader advanced calculus questions and penalizing them for not being able to answer.
I would go to war for this woman, it is my greatest sorrow that she has retired. She is the first prof I have ever had who managed to make multiple choice questions that are actually pedagogically sound (i.e. genuinely reflect understanding instead of getting bogged down in semantics and minutiae). I love the style of lecture/seminars!!
i was initially scared to take this course, but the learning experienced provided exceeded my expectations. i learned so much about microbiology but also the way i learn. although i never met up with dr. keenleyside, she was very helpful on the discussion forms on courselink. she really wanted us to learn! so sad she retired :(
Dr. Keenleyside's class was challenging but rewarding. Her lectures were engaging, and she truly wanted us to learn. For study prep, I found unstuck study and the textbook to be super helpful.
She is a inspiring professor, who motivated me to be better student, and more importantly a better person. I feel appreciative that I was able to attend her courses, before she retired.
