a great teacher, interesting, clear and very helpful
she is a great professor. whenever you need help or just to talk she is there for you. she actually cares about her students.
Her class is terrible... worst professor i ever had in 4 years at binghamton... she reads briefs out loud and claims that is what law school is like... nothing like law school... she worships the supreme court and has mood swings in class
this is the worst class i have ever been in. Its supposed to be an intro class, yet shes treats it like a graduate class. She really needs to lighten up and stop sending 30 freakin emails every day!!!!!!
CRAP, made a simple intro class seem impossible. Participation? Yeah, not easy when there's a million and one kissups and brownnosers is the discussion. Class blows!
the worst teacher ever, avoid taking her class at all costs. she needs to lighten up and get a life. she is psycho about cell phones, and students being late. The worst.
Do Not Take This Class!!!
She is very nice.
This is the worst teacher. a intro class that is ridiculous, you can't possibily participate in discussion with 20 other kids who need to do the same thing in an hour. She is too mean with lateness in lecture hall
I do no tlike this teacher. students already have enough stress. no one needs someone like this to make them go insane for an intro class. she acts like her has the most important job on earth when in fact she is just a loser.
She is ridiculous, tough, and a ****. I wish I never had this class.
made my favorite subject a living hell...that's all you need to know
The class isn't as bad as you guys are making it out to be. It's by no means a good class but it's not awful. She needs to stop yelling at people who come in late. It's a lec 1 class Wendy! She is very picky about things being done her way.

Strict but VERY REASONABLE. exams are straight out from the notes. If you put time into the class, you should get a good grade. She's really anal about people coming in late, but it's a 400 people lecture - imagine 100 students coming in late.
Amazing teacher, the way teachers should be. Demanding about what she expects but consistant. Has a passion about her topic and desire to teach those who want to learn. You have to be willing to get past her front and listen, take notes!!
Way to anal and particular about everything. Makes lecture painful to sit throw, and shes just really a nasty person.
This is too hard for an intro class. Take it easy
No Comments
She's making my first semester a living hell. Take it easy Martinek. A lot of us don't need this much stress from an Intro class. If you plan on taking this class with her, DON'T BE LATE. And if you are late, please make a scene when she kicks you out

ok so she's not the easiest prof in the world, but who said college is easy? she can be a b**** because she doesn't care too much about her students but her class is fair. 20% of grade is discussion section speaking
This woman is horrible. She doesn't understand that we all aren't graduate students that need a thorough understanding of political science. If your late she will PMS and never stop. If you want **** prizes for answering questions, this class is for you..

Very bitter about teaching an intro class. Doesn't understand that stressing people out is just making them hate plsc, and being interested is an important part about being a freshman. Reasonable with wanting an orderly class, but takes it too far
She wastes the students' time by stopping the class every time someone coughs... you don't even want to think about coming in late or, heaven forbid, going to the bathroom. Besides her, not a bad class... be prepared for lots of powerpoint notes.
It's true she requires alot from her students. However, she made it clear from day one that she had high expectations on the quality of work and she stuck to it. The people who gave her bad ratings are bitter that they didn't take her warning seriously.
Ignore the people who are ****ing. They are freshman who don't realize this is what college is about. Martinek will teach you Political Science. She is tough, but fair. If you attend class, read the book, and do your work, you'll get an A/A-/B.
I feel that this woman shold not be allowed to teach. She is very unhelpful, extremely moody, and has no consideration for her students. I am elated to transfer out of the university not only because I am leaving but because I never have to see her again.
i got an A-....exams from the notes, reading the book is a waste of time....papers were managable...but she is SOOO anal & tries too hard to appear "nice" with her trivia games....i would recommend avoiding the class just because of her personal
Wendy is the worst teacher I've had over the past 2 years. Her exams are rediculously specific. Her lectures are very boring consisting of nothing more than copying whatever she has on the powerpoint. She will kick you out of her office if you go for help
I liked the class, but hated the professor. She was unnecessarily strict about small things and treated the class as if we had done something wrong.
not a bad course and martinek taught it pretty fairly. however, when it comes to being late and going to the bathroom, she is insanely strict. dont save readings for the night before. on a good note, in a large intro class she made me feel like i was in a
She ran a tight ship, I respect her for effectively maintaining order in a 400 person class. The course was interesting and she was enthusiastic I hope I can take a smaller class with her. If you want an easy intro class this one is not for you.
She is an extremely helpful teacher and devotes mor time to her students than any other teacher. You will learn a lot of material and enjoy the class. With that said, she is the most difficult grader I have encountered and sets her standards very high.
She is the strickest, pickiest grader I have ever encountered at this school. She is incredibly intimidating and difficult to approach. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A LAWYER! Hard work doesn't always pay off! STAY AWAT!
Good Teacher. EXTREMELY HARD! LOTS OF WORK! But is very Fair.
nice, but work is hard, but fair, plenty of time
best teacher here, so nice, even brings snax to eat durin the test :)
The hardest course I have ever taken. She is very willing to help you get through the work, but somtimes I think that she forgets that we have other classes to do work for as well. But perhaps one of the best Teachers at BU
I got B+ despite having a D for discussion grade. The exams were so easy and weeks were given to write the papers. If you are shy, be warned that the discussions are graded and require a good amount of participation if you want an A. Readings were boring
easy to approch her, she'll learn ur name and make u simle with cookies at the exam. Papers are hard, but not terrible(it is an upper level)Learn about the Court system, and it makes you think that your a real lawyer
kindest prof. at BU. BEST at BU, she is open to new ideas, and will change accordenly. BEST (cant say that enough). Wish she taught more upper levels. Cookies and Brownies were awsome, who knew she could cook, LOL.
Horrible teacher--way too demanding and not fair with grading papers--don't take a class with her...save yourself a decent semester
Horrible...extremely bad grader and can not teach. She is nice to your face, but trust me...STAY AWAY!!!
the absolute worst teacher i have ever had.. she is cold hearted and extremely strict for no reason.. she makes kids not want to go to class and learn.. i went to class got a b+ and still hate her
she makes the topic interesting. she loves what she teaches. she is extremely fair. if you go to class and go to her for help, an A is easy to get. I got one.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS. By the end of the semester just the sound of her voice will give you the chills. She always seems nice to your face but she is evil.
Her classes are ridiculously difficult. Avoid her class if you care about your GPA.
She is one of the worst teachers ever...i do not even bother goin to class because there is no way i could sit in a class for over an hour lookin at her...she looks like that the louie guy who used to do family feud
I hated this professor and class. She has ridiculous expectations and standards. Whatever GENED this class gives you is not worth it at all. This was the biggest pain in the a** class I have ever taken.
-eccentric woman -not as bad as people say, but there is a lot of reading to do
Possibly the worst professor I have had. She is very strict and makes up ridiculous rules for absolutley no reason. Best thing you can do is go to class all the time, take the notes, and study them. Her tests are difficult, but not imposible if you study.
The class isn't bad at all. The papers are really easy and graded very easy. The tests are a little difficult but aren't terrible. The class is pretty interesting if you go to all the lectures. In all, a pretty good class.
She seems to be excited about what she's teaching, but her class is boring. The tests are hard, and the requirements for an introductory class are ridiculous. Kicking people out for being late is more disruptive than if they came in and sat in the back. She's strict and mean.
Very easy class. You don't have to read those things for discussion just repeat/comment on what other people say. She answered all my questions via e-mail. Weeks are given to write papers with clear guidelines so there's no excuse not to do well on them. Tests are a joke too if you study a little.
She's a little troll but wants you to learn. She makes things seem harder than they are. And looks like her head is about to explode from all that coffee. The 830 class is a killer, don't be late or she'll eat you. Joking aside I can't say I hated her as much as some other PolySci prof. Luke warm.

Professor Martinek is a wonderful professor... just don't sleep in class or come in late. The class covers a lot of material and is a bit difficult, but the professor always clarifies material that the students aren't clear on, and answers any questions e-mailed to her.
Never, ever take this class. The average on the midterm was around a 64;papers are graded way too hard. She pretends to treat students like adults but really she thinks we are all babies.
Yikes!
dont come late!
For an introduction class she expects too much from students. Papers are graded very hard. The tests aren't horribly difficult, but the class average for the midterm was in the 60's with a ten point curve. Not recommended to fufill a gen-ed.
SHE WAS SO HARD AND BORING BUT SHE GIVES U AN OPTION TO TAKE THE FINAL SO SHES COOL IN MY BOOK HOLLA
Decent class, but politics should be much more interesting. Discussion sections are fun when you get off topic. I thought she had an attitude problem until she didn't make us take the final. that was amazing. I know people who would have failed without that.
If you can avoid this class...DO IT, it is insane and eventhough she gives u the option of taking the final it doesnt make up for the hell that she puts u through the rest of the semester...from one student to another..DO NOT take this class unless u have to!!!
She is an awful teacher and makes you hate the class. I was really looking forward to the class and liked disscusion but she was so boring and stupid. never take a class by her and this isn't because i got a bad grade i did no work and got a B. skip this class she is so BAD you will never want to go
She is a hideous troll. From the moment I stepped into the class i knew she was a spiteful, unhelpful, and awful teacher. She just wishes she could of become a lawyer and takes it out on the class. Do not take this class.
Professor Martinek is an excellent professor. She teaches the subject very well and will help you if you need it. Papers are graded fairly. Tests can be difficult but not horrible. Definatly take this class.
You have to be prepared if you want a good grade and you need to SPEAK UP in discussions! She gives you a month to complete a 5 page paper and constantly sends you out e-mails before a test clarifying main points and ideas. She really is a great teacher who knows what she is talking about.
NEVER TAKE HER CLASS EVER
People who complain about Martinek do so because they are lazy, and they don't want to work in a 100 level class. Sorry she makes you think and work guys. Yes, class is not easy, but she is fair (and tough). She is very helpful though, and she answers any and all questions that you may have.
THIS IS AN EVIL WOMAN! I took this class as an elective...big mistake. I got a B+ in the class but wish I dropped it anyway. I agree with everything nasty posted about her!
If anyone who thinks this class is hard wants to become a lawyer - you'll never make it to law school. If you like American Politics/Constitutional history, you'll love this class. The only people leaving nasty posts are the ones who think college should be easy and were lazy; the class isnt bad
No Comments
lets start by saying that i wanted to take this class... and then when they find out that you are not a poli sci major ie. engineering, your grades drop... shes very biased, so if u want to do well suck up to her and her TAs. Dont defy her beliefs or she'll lower your grade. pretend ur a poli maj
No Comments
Tough class, not a bad teacher, but as a freshman it was a big time wakeup call, the mid-term and finals are very hard, and the discussions are the only way to maintain an average grade
If ur willing to work, then this class will not be a problem!
I was less interested in Politics by the end of this class than I was coming in. Martinek has a mean streak as well, which makes the entire class feel uncomfortable. Study well for the tests, and they're not all that bad. The papers are graded fairly too. Material is boring, but if you study, you'll be ok.

she is ok!
Martinek is awesome in an upper-level class. If people think she's harsh, they should drop out of college, because she's very fair, clear, intelligent, and helpful. Just go to her office hours, she's a great professor, and she's always willing to help anyone who asks for it.
Yes, she is tough but I think that if you are willing to do the work, you will be fine. She really tries hard to make the class interesting. Take the class and keep an open mind.
You just have to be willing to put in the work--and you'll do fine. She's tough but fair.
Great teacher, really goes above and beyond to help students. She asks a lot, but gives a lot. She grades the papers, unlike her TAs in PLSC 111, so there is no bais. One of the best Binghamton has to offer!
If you're looking for an easy A, do not take a class with this woman. It's not impossible, but she makes you work. She's very helpful and makes herself more available than any other professor. Really wants her students to do well, but won't give out an A just because she likes you, you have to work hard.
She's very knowledgeable and really cares about what she teaches. But you better respect her class. She's better in higher level courses because it's all PPL and PLSC majors, so all the students are relatively interested in the subject.
terrible teacher. makes broad generalizations and does not seem to grasp the material as well as she thinks she does. She is also a complete **** and yells at you when you show up even a minute late for her clas.I can't stand her and she is one reason why i switched from being a poli sci major to a History major.Simply put she is a bad teacher.
Clearly, if you are unable to do well in a class with one of the most accesible professors then you are brain dead and should withdraw from the university. If you like the material, you will enjoy her class; she is without question one of the finest professors in the department. Easy A if you do your work- tests and papers are very straightforward.
Prof. Martinek is very knowledgeable, but strict. Has insane policy of not admitting students into class who are 5 seconds late to lecture, no joke. Made me feel uncomfortable in lecture. Overall a good professor. You need to put a good amount of effort and hard work into her class.
If you are able to put in at least 30 hrs a week into her class, then great!

This class was really interesting yet difficult. I am an hdev major and this was my first plsc class ever, and I still liked the teacher. If you are a hard worker and will just put the time in then you will do fine. The memorandum kicked my ass, but the tests were straight foward.
One of the greatest professors I've ever had. Extremely willing to help you out as much as she can. Definitely take a class with her if you have the opportunity to, but just be prepared to do the work. If you dont' do the work and don't go to class you're screwed
She is an excellent professor, knows everything about what she teaches, will give you all the help you need if you go to her office hours...but she is a very hard grader and all of her upper level classes involve a lot of work
whoever complains about Martinek is just a lazy person who doesnt want to do anything. she is the best professor i've ever had. her classes do involve a lot of work but shes ALWAYS available to give help and if the subject interests u and u want to learn her classes are AMAZING
If you're not in her group of favorite students, don't expect a good grade unless you live and breathe for her and her class. She thinks that your world revolved around her class and her attendance policy is what is wrong with teaching

Wendy is a really nice lady who is very helpful and cares for her students greatly. I would not recommend this class unless you are ready to do alot of work. You have to devote alot of time to this class. I took this class way to early in my tenure. It is definitely a class for upperclassman preferably ones who are taking a reduced schedule.
Love her :) She is such a dedicated teacher. She is always there to help her students. Class is difficult but if you do the reading and invest the time, it's worth it. Convinced my I wanted to be a lawyer.
Do not take this class unless you have absolutely have to. There is way too much work expected, especially as a freshman. Also, it's at 8:30am. The exams are hard and there is no review so you have to prepare yourself. The papers are long but take advantage of them as best you can. She manages to be as nasty to you as possible.
First, upper level classes aren't meant for freshman, second of all, she is in her office available & willing to provide all the help you need, tests consist of prepared essays and shell read your entire answer b4 the test and tell you if its ok! all it takes a student who understands college involves work & goes 2 office hrs for help & youll b gr8
An incredible amount of work. Mainly research and writing. I took the class with a friend and we motivated each other to keep trying. Martinek's office hours are helpful if you are struggling (if you don't struggle in her class-who are you?) so be sure to utilize them. Hard to compare this class to any other, but recommend it for that very reason.
Took the class, I came down with a really bad case of the flu. Went to the doctors office and was told not to go to class. I emailed her saying I wouldn't be able to take her test but had a dr note. She told me I had 2 options. Show up in class and take it or get a 0 make ups weren't allowed. If she doesn't love you she hates you.
I F****** LOVE HER! Granted its only the 4th week of classes but I wanted to rate her niw because most of the comments about her are nuts. She's hard yes but its a 300-level course and this is college..a good college. so suck it up!! Shes tiny and bubbly and keeps you awake and interested. ADORE HER!
Does not give you a chance to do well even if you want to. No guidelines or sample papers on how to do the legal papers.
LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!!!!! She's amazing. Hard, but anyone who says shes not helpful is a lying lazy but head. She is always in her office, even incorporates more office hours during difficult weeks. She's entertaining, brilliant and dedicated. Wish we had more professors like her!
I took this freshman seminar with Prof. Martinek thinking it would be an easy. However, she really makes you work for your grades. She has zero tolerance for lateness or being unprepared for class. I really liked the way she approached the class; she's passionate about the subject. Don't take a class with her unless you are willing to work.
If she doesnt love you, she HATES you. This woman is absolutely nuts. Beware taking one of her classes. If you are late, unprepared, absent for any reason even legitimately, she doesnt care. She is extremely unhelpful and wants you to fail. I wouldnt recommend her classes to my worst enemies.
Martinek started off the first day of class telling us that we should be scared of her. Her class is really hard! The format of the test and papers require hours and hours and hours of time of research and writing. But she's very friendly in her office hours and will even set up special appointments. Pop quizzes instead of attendance (xtra credit).
She is a very good professor, however her workload is crazy. I am barely pulling a c and I work my butt and I go to all her office hours. This class is a really good class for future law students. Its a hard class and shouldn't be taken with any other hard classes. THIS CLASS WILL DESTROY YOUR GPA. I love her, wish she would lighten up on here work
i LOVED HER! she was extremely hard and you have to REALLY do the readings but it totally pays off because its a great class if you want to pursue law
I have taken 2 classes with Prof. Martinek and I am doing an Indep. Study with her. She is a phenomenal professor. If you want an easy a, don't take this class. If you want something that's worthy and hard work, take this class. She WANTS TO HELP YOU!!! GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!! Everyone who says the opposite didn't put the effort in!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED HER!! I took her intro to American Politics Class my Freshman year and it was THE reason I became a Poli Sci Major! This class is AWESOME and she makes you really love what you're learning about. Be prepared to REALY work for your grades but the pay off is worth it, Martinek was BY FAR the BEST professor I had in college!
She's smart and expects a great deal from her students. A very rewarding class to take. But she spent too much time telling us just how hard her class was; I felt like her warnings and procedural guidance for the class eclipsed her actual teaching. I didn't get my best grade in the class but I learned a LOT. She's very nice in office hours.
8:30 AM, optional attendance, but the class gets a lot easier if you go. Tests are very tricky. One paper makes up 20% of the grade, it's an easy assignment but she makes it seem complicated. Be warned: if you go to lecture, she will call on you randomly and whatever you say will probably be wrong. I'm scared of her.
Prof. Martinek is an ok teacher. She keeps the class interested but can also be too dramatic sometimes and her soap box act can get a little old. The paper rubric is very strict. You can do well if you work hard, but by no means expect to get an A simply for scoring above the average/median. You get what you get, no curves, no disputes, no BS.
I'm failing her class, but she's really great. Even her emails are stress-free. I've never been to her office hours but she was always available. I'm a transfer student so most of my classes are upper level and it's like I'm a freshman at a huge school. I blame myself for getting low scores but she's really awesome.
Never take this class, if you do not appear to your likeness she will make your life hell. Do not take this class, she has some serious issues with her past and takes it out on her students that don't fall under her likeness.
She is not a terrible teacher, she just likes to challenge her students. When I took the class I entered having an interest in Politics, I still have a reasonable interest in Politics. She did not make it easy at all what so ever, but it's college so why should she? The paper helps, just don't slack on it, and really try to come to lectures!!
There are not enough words to describe how much I regret taking this class. Her expectations are unrealistic. She clearly has issues from her past teaching experiences and there's no getting through to her. She treats the class like she has to teach you a lesson. Even the TAs complained about her in section.
The class involves a lot of hard work, and the tests require you to synthesize the material. Discussion sections are well-structured and always interesting. Professor Martinek is a good professor and very nice, but she takes the course seriously, and though lecture hall attendance is technically not required, it is much better to attend
Don't expect to take the class if you want easy work. Make an effort to go to the lectures and use office hours. The paper will help if youre having trouble with the tests.
350 characters is not enough room to explain how terrible of a teacher she is. Incredibly authoritarian (doesnt allow hoods or hats on test day, all bags placed with her, and she'll randomly assign a seat), and useless as an instructor. Picks TAs off of past grades and not grasp of material.
It was the hardest course ive ever taken. She makes it harder for her students to succeed. she doesnt want to be there the majority of the time and doesnt care if you get what she is professing or not. Ive never lost so much respect for anyone as I have for her and I had some dictator like professors in the past but they cared for student success
Her Lack of confidence shows. I don't know how she became a professor. Pretends that she knows, but we can see right through her. She tries to act tough, for no reason whatsoever. She doesn't treat students equally, so you will have to act like you care about her class. Take and forget.
Professor Martinek is one of the diamonds in the rough at BU. If you go to her office hours and ask for help and have conversations with her, she will save your semester. Her class is hard, but most 300-levels are. People criticize her for being mean and harsh, but those are the people who don't go to her office hours.
Do not take any class with this Professor. That is my advice to students majoring in Poli Sci or not. Worst Poli Sci Professor in the Department. Take courses with the best (Krasno, Robinson, Yates, etc...) I graduated from Bing (Poli Sci major), then George Mason with Master's in Public Policy, now working full time. My only advice to students.
Took her Intro to U.S. Supreme Court Harp 101 class. She was definitely a little tough for a Harp 101 class, but she was very clear with us about what she wanted with her assignments. She did give pop quizzes a lot, but she also warned us about material we should really know. She also really made an effort to be available to us! Definitely caring.
Prof Martinek is a wonderful and caring professor who goes above and beyond for her students. Ask for help and you will receive it. Get your work done early because it can and will build up.
She talks like she wants to help but is extremely unhelpful. She openly tells students to complain about her to the department because she (probably) has tenure. For a really interesting class she was completely and totally unfair. She also has 8 TAs who she does not allow to help at all.
Her class content isn't particularly difficult. What's difficult are unreasonable forms of testing that require you to guess at what type of info she is looking for. She can be rather arbitrary in her grading, as she allotted points to quizzes depending on her mood. She also deflects questions and is deliberately confusing during lecture.
Prof. Martinek IS helpful despite what some others have said. While it's true she sometimes grades in a way that is not at first clear, I have personally spent hours with her as she helped me bring my grade from a C to an A-. She's willing to help, but she won't hand hold; you need to show some initiative -- and I think that's perfectly fair.
I almost guarantee the people complaining that she's unreasonable feel that way because they did not take it seriously. It's a lot of material, but you can get through it if you suck it up, work through the reading, and ask for help. The amount of people complaining that they had to work for their grade in a 300 level class is ridiculous.
Professor Martinek does expect a lot from her students and can be very tough at times but her class is so rewarding and you really learn a lot if you are willing to put the work in. She truly cares about the well-being of her students and wants them to succeed not just in class but in life. The best class I've taken at Binghamton. Great lady!
Yes, I failed this class, but Martinek is still one of the best. She is knowledgeable, prepared, accessible both in person and through email, and an all-around amazing lady. She REALLY makes you work for it, but in the process you will develop not just intimate familiarity with the content, but an increased ability to think critically.
Unhelpful, feigns politeness but is blatantly rude, arbitrarily decides what to test you on. Makes herself available for office hours; rarely answers questions directly. I personally find her infuriating, but you may not. I would advise you to stay away if you can, particularly because her tests are formatted in an absurd, ineffectual manner.
The best PLSC prof Ive had at Bing so far; incredibly smart and truly cares about the material and her students. However, if you do not put the effort in, it is almost guaranteed you will do poorly. Know the material and go to office hours and youll be fine.
Professor Martinek is amazing. I don't think I've taken a course that was as challenging and at the same time as instructive as this one. Really makes you work for it; and if you do, it'll pay off big time. Her lectures are heavy but she sprinkles them with funny jokes. Don't take her if you're looking for an easy A.
The course material is not even all that complicated, its simply her method of testing that is absurdly difficult to the point of it being a detriment to the class. Her rationale for the test method is this is how law school is going to be, I am now over halfway through my 1L year at a T-50 law school and still havent seen anything as difficult
Amazing professor, she is tough and you have to work hard but it is worth it. I have learned so much in her class! She gives extra office hours before tests and is always willing to answer your questions and help you. Releases practice questions for exams. If you do them, you can do well on the exams. She genuinely cares about her students!
Wendy Martinek is the best professor in the Political Science Department. She definitely makes you work for your grade, but she holds office hours several times a week and is super accessible outside of class. She also releases previous exams for practice and encourages you to ask her questions. If you're willing to work hard, take this class.
Prof Martinek is one of the best profs I've had at Bing! This class is definitely demanding, but extremely rewarding. It is clear that she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Go see her for office hours and put in the work and you'll do well! Def take a class with her if you are interested in the subject!
Professor Martinek! I adore her; she is truly amazing. Pay attention, attend office hours, and put in the effort. She isn't here to give anyone an easy A, but she has taught me so much.
This professor has to be one of the worst I've had in Binghamton. Although extremely nice, she is one of those professors who takes things way too seriously. She may seem like she cares by providing a ton of office hours and such but will not help a student out who may need accommodations. Tests are extremely hard and time restraining. Don't take
Do not take this class if you want an easy A. You really need to put in the work to earn your grade. Her tests are extremely content heavy, I recommend flashcards to study they were most helpful. She is a very tough grader you need to know literally everything for the tests. She is a nice woman with lots of office hours, but a LOT of work to study
Her tests are impossible because she wants you to not only explain the right answer, but the wrong ones as well, while also tying in every possible fact of knowledge about the subject in only an 1 1/2 hours. Her grading is extremely harsh and offers no positive feedback (someone got a 15% on a paper). Terrible class and doesn't accept feedback
Terrible exams and too stubborn to talk with.
I had Dr. Martinek for two classes- Constitutional Law and Judicial Process. I would suggest taking either or both if you have any interest in US law and how it operates. Time and effort are requirements, but if it is an area of interest for you, then studying is made easier.
I never gave a review. This one I have to. STAY AWAY!
I would never recommend this class to anybody but, if you like a challenge then it's good for you. For success I recommend reading the textbook in tandem with her lectures. I think it's the worst testing format I have ever taken and I disagree with her assertions that it is designed to test knowledge. Either way, her grading is diabolical.
Tests are way too difficult. Also, I went to office hours and she got mad at me for asking questions
Martinek is the toughest prof. ever. If you don't go to office hours, she won't like you. Attendance not mandatory, but you need to go to class to get notes. Tests are borderline impossible without tons of studying. Love the topics she teaches but how she teaches is awful. If you take, be prepared to do TONS of work.
Prof. Martinek is genuinely a great professor. People say her class is really difficult, but if you put in the work it's not bad. You just have to study - which she gives many great techniques to help with. Her lectures are always interesting, and she's so passionate about the topics. She's also super accessible for questions and loves her students
Toughest grader I've ever had. I got a D and I've never gotten a grade below a B- before taking her class. Went to office hours once and she got mad at me in front of other students for asking a question - so embarrassing. Also I completed in-class extra credit quizzes and she didn't count those towards my final grade???? AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
She yelled at me for asking questions when she said any questions, at last, she didn't answer the question but accused me being not asking the question in a clearer way. She also made fun of my accent even though she could understand perfectly. She even said she would talk behind your back as a threat.Traumatized. Worst professor ever, super mean.
Is this an easy A? No. Is Professor Martinek going to help you get a good grade if you put in the work? ABSOLUTELY. She loves her students, makes herself available constantly, and makes difficult topics easy to grasp. It's con law, by nature it's tough. You need to work and study but if you prep for the exams and go to office hours, you'll be fine.
Professor Martinek is the nicest, most caring professor I've ever had. She is an endless fountain of wisdom and has inspired me to work hard and think critically. Her class, however, is the toughest, most demanding class I've ever enrolled in. If you want an easy A, or if you need this class to graduate, do not take it. It's not worth the stress.
Really amazing professor. Do not take if you want an easy A, there are a million professors for that. If you want to actually learn something, take her class.
The class was very hard and exhausting. I didn't have a problem with her until she yelled at me for asking a question in office hours. Besides that one instance she was pretty nice but is a super tough grader. Her tests are bonkers - you have to say why the right answer is right and why the wrong answers are wrong with multiple choice questions.
Professor Martinek's class is no easy feat, but if you put in the work, the payoff is worth it. Her teaching style is unorthodox, but engaging lectures and helpful office hours can make even the toughest topics manageable. unstuck ai proved invaluable for my study prep - a great supplement to the textbook.
Don't take Judicial Process if you want an easy A. You can pass if you're willing to put in tons of effort into studying for the exams, which are okay but you need to explain every concept that goes with each choice for each question. Have to attend for notes despite attendance not being mandatory. Prof. Martinek is accessible, go to office hours!
I took her for American Judicial Process and she is definitely a good lecturer. But her exams are insanely difficult. She is also a super nice person but the class is not worth it if you need it for credit. Avoid.
Dr. Martinek is hands down the best professor I've ever had at Binghamton. If you put in the effort she will do everything in her power to help you out. She genuinely wants you to succeed, but do not take her class unless you are genuinely interested in the topic and are willing to work very hard.
The content of Professor Martinek's class was amazing. She made me a much better student, and by comparison, every other class was very easy after hers. I think her grading was diabolical. More than half of the class was failing. I would study for 20+ hours for an exam and get a C. If you're equipped to do well in her class, you know who you are.
I have taken 3 classes with Dr. Martinek and I absolutely love her. Her classes are very difficult and require a lot of time and effort, but you learn and RETAIN soooo much and get some actually valuable life skills from them. She is incredibly accessible and understanding, and if you are willing to put in the effort, she will give it right back.
she was fine. seemed to care about students, but let her own emotions get in the way (snapped at students, ended class abruptly because she was frustrated). didn't really teach, poor discussion leader in seminars, cancels and changes stuff last minute. grades somewhat arbitrarily. i felt like my time was wasted, even though i loved the subject
She is a sweet woman and really does care about each and every one of her students, but her grading is genuinely so atrocious it makes you not care about the nice parts anymore. To top it off her classes are just extremely boring, I don't get why people treat taking her classes as some 3rd eye-opening experience, overrated professor, don't take.
