knows her stuff...you're relatively run of the mill art historian and classics professor
No quizzes or hw (for CLA 10C), but you CANNOT miss a lecture. You must read everything. The tests will be your grade in the class so do well on them.
Very cool professor. She's very witty and entertaining. No final in the class, but 3 exams (the last of which is worth 40% of your grade). I really enjoyed her class.
I love Raschke!! SHe explains everything in detail and it is a very interesting course. No HW or final. 3 midterms, but don't miss lecture
didn't like her teaching style-at the beginning, she said she wouldn't have us write papers cuz it's lower division course, but we ended up writing 3 essays-1 for midterm in-class, and 2 for the final! grrr......
lectures kinda boring, lights turned out so you get sleepy, missed midterm due to sickness and she was extremely unhelpful so i ended up having to take a no credit.
She is very unorganized in her lectures...she skips around.
She is a non goofe-off teacher, take her only if you are serious about learning what she teaches. Quite hard, as she assumes everyone knows the basics. Extra credit is rare. Good luck haggling over grades. Overall I enjoyed the class.
tough as nails. don't take her class if you buffoon around
Is arrogant and tends to snap at students. Class was ok, but the teacher was not very helpful.
best teacher/class i took at Rside hands down. Her accent and material is very interesting.Classes are a must.Reading is not mandatory but can help. Took two classics classes with her-aced both of them not reading although i attended every single class.
if you do not go to class...DO NOT TAKE THIS!! i made a HUGE mistake of taking her because there's no book that reflects her lectures..and her tests depend on her lectures which i missed...but fairly easy grader
She is a very boring lecturer. Most of the class is based on slides and pictures of artifacts and buildings, the rest is based on books. Her grading is fairly easy but make sure not to miss any lectures because there is no text that follows her lectures so it's crucial to attend. Besides that its ok
Class is very boring. Her guideline sheet does not help at all. Makes fun of other students that stroll in late. Hard tests. All tests are done on essay format, no mulitple choice and NO remakes. Tests based on lecture and slides. Must attend every class in order to do well at all.
she was nice, unless you interrupt class(ex: cell phone goes off, or you enter more than 1 minute late)Otherwise she was very clear about what she wanted us to learn and never put anything on the tests that she didn't emphasize or make sure we knew. I say take it but be prepared for a lot of reading
she was a great prof.
good class, very interesting, however she is strict. but you really do have to go to every class, tests are straight from lecture. does have handouts that you can follow along with and have the spellings, and use those to study with for exams. she is serious about what she teaches, and it shows.
She talks waaaay to fast to get down anything she is saying. Her study guides also don't really prepare you that much for the tests. Overall, she is a sub-par professor. Avoid this class, unless you're up to the challenge.
ur grade is determined from 3 exams only. MUST go to lecture or else ur screwed for tests. exams are kinda a pain in the ass cuz she only put likes 5 things and an essay. 5 things can be anything and so u have to know lots of material..
Whew, I am so glad to be out of that class with a B! It was challenging kuz it was never apparent what exactly the tests would be on. If you don't like coming to lecture and only read the textbook, DON'T take this class. I will say it was interesting, but I was too concerned with trying to get a B.
This class sucked the big one. I am not sure if the tests could be any more ridiculous. The tests only covered about 10 percent of the actual material that she lectured on and assigned to read.
Goes really fast and isn't that nice.
In my 10A class, there wasn't a whole lot of reading, and what we did read was easy. You do have to go to class and take A LOT of notes because questions on the exams are based on that. It's a really interesting class though. I got a B+. She nice and funny too!
All I have to say about this professor is that she is horribly mean! I missed the final cause my sister was in an accident, and she wouldnt let me retake the final! I had a B up untill that point and ended up failing the class
I loved her and her classes. They really taught me the interesting aspects of history. Yes, she can be mean, but only to those who don't respect history or school in general.
A bland professor. Hard to listen to her lectures.
Dr. Rashke is a good teacher and a good person. Yes, she is tough. But she knows what she is talking about, and she cares about students who bother to care as well.
Very difficult class. Good professor. High-paced class. Used an out of print book, though. I would have liked to see her use a newer, more updated textbook.
the course is difficult and very goes at a rapid pace. she knows what she is talking about but is a very impatient and likes to use the humiliation methods to scare students into learning. She is nice and pays attention only to those students who do extremely well. A very knowledgable person but not a very patient and understanding professor.
Really not very personable- makes it difficult to ask for help.
she was inaudible 95% of the time and she only gives midterms and a final. She is a grading nazi and a personality vaccum. stay away.
Basically, this class begins well then gradually becomes hard and boring. The second midterm is rediculous. The study guide consisted of 60 or so items which pretty much must be memorized. I felt as if she was intentionally trying to make me feel stupid or inadequate. Unless this sort of thing is your pasion, dont take it. See other comments.
Latin is hard enough as it is to learn and she does not make it any easier. She knows her Latin, I'll give her that, but she is mean and hard to approach. I totally dislike her personality and how strict she is when it comes to grading and makeup tests and absences and homework. Beware. You have been warned.
chill out people. shes super cool. the people that dont like her dont do their work. shes really easy to talk to ans shes one of my favorite teachers. relax and start putting in some effort. shes a good professor, i have an A in her class.
Very boring lectures, and she will test you on absolutely random topics from them. No curve on grades and very strict grading. Save don't expect an A from her.
Sort of rambles during lectures. Got an A in the class but was extremely stressed and confused. Expects every little thing she says and all that you have ever read to be retained. Sort of quirky and funny if you catch her on a good day. Accent can make foreign words very difficult to understand. I have a 4.0 and this was the hardest class ive taken
Took this class with a friend, only she dropped out, wish I would have done the same, eventually did, wow her classes are boring, she speaks quickly and the grading sucks, no assignments or extra credit or anything, strictly on 2 MIDTERMS and a final, which is freakin hard. Not very approachable nor does she ever give make-ups. I dropped it.
She is very knowledgeable, however she is not able to pass on information. All she does is read off of essays she wrote for class. She has no idea how to actually "teach" or educate. There is no such bad student just a bad teacher.
Stay away from this one!
She knows her stuff but is not a good teacher. Often belittles people who ask questions. Is frequently rude and mean. It is not because she is English, most Brits are not like that!! She should retire so they can add a Classicist who can actually work with students. Avoid her or be very wary!
I have taken her for CLA 50,10A, 10B, Latin 1,2...and I absolutely LOVE HER. She is a true British Professor and demands respect. As long as you are punctual take good notes, ask for a review and sit in the front; she is very knowledgeable and witty. She is somewhat hard to approach, but fun once in her office. Just don't ask stupid questions.
Grade is based only on 3 exams, which are off topic and hard If you study what she tells you on the review, you will get everything wrong. The class sucks. Terrible professor. only cool things is her British accent
stay away if you cherrish your GPA
grade based on 3 midterms. epitome of an old british historian. questions on test were totally random. kinda funny and quirky on some days. when studying, memorize all the stupid facts and thats what will probably be on the test.
Entire grade is based off of 3 RIDICULOUS test that are based off of random facts she MIGHT of mention during lecture once. Her review sections, aren't actually review sections, its just her teaching an entirely new section in the class. If you're looking for an easy class.. this isn't it, try Dr. Lowy in Anything!
Great professor, knows her stuff, and is very helpful and willing to answer questions during class, as well as during office hours. Only thing is you gotta go to her for help, she does move a little quick at first til u get used to the speed. She does kinda treat college students like high school students at times. Good professor though!
This class is not for people who do not like to study. your grade is based off of 3 exams and there is no course work which means lecture notes are vital. Not an easy A at all, you really have to study and know the material well. The professor can be hard to understand at times because she gets side tracked. If you like mythology then go for it.
She speaks and goes through slides a bit fast at times, so you have to be quick. I have to agree that the grading set up of the class is ridiculous - 3 exams, and that's it. Her grading for the tests is erratic - 1st midterm I got a 69, 2nd midterm I got a 100, and the final, I have yet to see my grade. To be safe, change the grading basis to S/N
It was definitely not the easiest class in the world, but as long as you pay attention you should have no problem passing. I found that in review sessions that if she or the TAs went over anything specifically then it wouldn't be on the test. She's very funny, and I would definitely take another class with her if I am able.
There was a lot of misunderstanding between me and this professor. She was very cruel and mean and said that I was never doing my work; but I came from a different place where my method although flawed still was respected and got the job done. I told her off! Although I made a poor impression on her, I did okay gradewise.
Prof. Raschke's Classical Studies class made no sense. I had a great desire to take this class but her lectures at useless. All she has is pictures and the name of the most random "monster" the picture hardly doesn't match the name of the character. She just talks and it is unclear as to what notes we should take.
LOVED THIS CLASS! Although I suggest that you have an interest in greek/roman mythology - it's a lot of greek/roman lit. The class was like Clash of the Titans in detail. There's no discussions but taking notes of THE THINGS SHE SAYS really helps. It might seem useless, but jot it down 'cause it might be on the midterm. I had fun in this class!
Professor Raschke teaches one of the hardest classes I've had. I won't lie, I did not pass Latin 2 the first time around, mainly because I wasn't taking it seriously. Now, it's a breeze. She knows her stuff and is extremely smart. But her fast-paced teaching and assumptions that all the students understand the material 100% is a little hindering.
Attendance is definitely mandatory. Make sure to print out the readings and make notes on them as she reviews them. You really need to know the readings because she asks that you identify the reading on where its from. Interesting but not so easy class. Take lots of notes
Classes are somewhat relevant to the tested material. She tends to go off on tangents a lot in her lectures since she is very interested in the material. Nothing impossible, if you attend lecture and can stand her pretentious comments without losing interest, you'll do fine.
Attending lecture is important. She speaks fairly clearly. Three exams that progress in weight. Each has a different format but tend toward short answer and esay questions. Not cumulative but based on recent information given. No paper.
Such a borring professor. So bland, dull, monotone. I hated her class. She skips around way too much. Is very unclear. starts out the class as if you already know about what she's teaching. honestly, she's full of herself. most borring class ive taken.
Latin is my hardest class, yet Raschke is my favorite prof. She is a bit dry at times, but has a definite sense of humor. Very willing to help students out and very concerned about her students' wellfare. Overall a great teacher and a very productive class.
This is by far my hardest class. However, Dr. Raschke is one of my favorite professors. She helped me out so much when I don't get the material. If you take this class, STUDY STUDY STUDY & learn the vocal & declensions early. It will be wise to do that in order to help with the other Latin classes.
I really like her. She is enjoyable and the topics are interesting. Her slides do not have very many words so you have to listen carefully. Her tests are short answer form but if you pay attention and study it's not difficult.
extremely incompetent and rude professor. Lectures are bland and unnecessary.I had a passion for Greece until i took this course. Exams(3) don't clearly cover material learned and her grading is extremely hard. DON'T TAKE HER!
She is an interesting professor, attending the lectures were fun due to not having discussion, but I felt like they were needed. Although I went to lecture and read the material, ended up failing 2 out of the 4 tests because I wasn't reading close enough. Remember dates, time periods, figures and the works. If you don't study hard, you're screwed.
Being with her for a year to learn Latin, I've grown pretty fond of her- but learning language in 10 weeks is difficult, and obviously must be fast paced. Do your homework, study, and go to class and you'll pass.
This class is extremely average.I usually love ancient history, but the professor just did not do it for me. There is nothing particularly interesting about her lecture style. The class has no energy.
I was interested the topic so I enjoyed the subject a lot. It is CRITICAL to do the reading and taking extensive notes to do well on her free response exams. Class isn't really exciting but it's okay. If you want to do well, attend lectures. 3 Midterms, no final.
When you try to ask her a question, she makes you feel dumb for asking in the first place. She is not very pleasant and is very confusing. Her comments she made to me made me feel like I was inferior. She is mean.
The lectures are extremely dry. She will harass you for electronic use or leaving class early. TA's are no help as they use her lecture notes and do not go into depth. Expect extremely detailed notations on test. MAKE SURE YOU READ!!! And try not to fall asleep. Go to office hours. If you fail the first test, just drop the class.
DON'T. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. Consider yourself warned.
She is far and away the worst professor I have ever had. She is extremely dry, boring, rude, and mean. She is no help whatsoever. She makes anyone who asks a question feel foolish for asking. It is a huge struggle to stay awake during the dry lectures, which is upsetting because of the high interest that i had in the subject. Avoid at all costs.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you are trying to simply fulfill a breadth requirement. She stops class when someone has to leave early or walks in late, is rude, she grades fairly hard, and is sometimes difficult to understand. She is a very tough grader. Avoid if possible!
A solid professor of Latin, at times funny and at other times demanding. In her class(es) expect to work hard for a good grade.
Do not take this class. Her grading is extremely tough, it seems as if even though you go to all lectures and do all the readings you still won't do good.
She's the worst professor I had in my life. I took her for ancient civilization Rome and she basically failed everyone in that class. When teaching lecture, she goes too fast on the PowerPoint and expects you to memorize everything. Oh and she said and I quote, "I've never curved a class in my years teaching" I tried my best and still managed a D+
tests are super tough. I failed the class and it hurt my GPA. I really wish I could've dropped. do not take this class.
I only took this class because nothing else was open and now I realize WHY nothing else was open. Don't underestimate this class, it's hella hard, hella dense, hella reading, it's NOT an easy A elective course. I along with 2 others I know so far have failed it.
Dr. Raschke expects much from her students and for many its too much for them. The work is constant and hard, Latin is a difficult language, but she is always available for help and wants her students to succeed. Do the homework and review every night and you'll do fine, its language! It requires commitment to learn.
During lecture she just talks and talks and its hard to understand what is important and what isn't. She goes through powerpoints way too quickly. Her tests are hard and you basically have to study everything and she is not an easy grader. Her lectures tend to be quite boring as well. Don't take this for your breadth class or you'll regret it.
I've taken all three classes in her CLA010 series and she is a very difficult professor, however if you do take the time to go to class and do the readings you will gain quite a bit from her classes. A lot of what I've learned in these I've been able to apply to other classes. Also, she is intimidating but is much more approachable one-on-one.
I know many people find this to be a very difficult class, but if you go to lecture and take notes, it is very do-able. If you pay attention, you do not need to read the textbook. She is a great professor and truly cares about her students. I have now taken three classes with her and I'm taking two more next quarter. Go to class!!!!
She's a great professor! Make sure you're taking notes during lecture! DON'T JUST WRITE WHAT IS ON THE SLIDE!!! Listen to her speak and write from there. She will emphasize what will be on the test so pay attention! Definitely go to class because if you do go and pay attention and take notes, you don't really need to read the book!
Don't underestimate Professor Raschke! Latin is a difficult language and she will give you lots of work (and lots of help) to understand it. She's a no-nonsense teacher but ultimately if you wanna tank your own grade she doesn't care. You have to decide to put in the effort. Overall the class is not harsh as long as you study.
WOW was this class hard. The TAs are sooo bad in this class. They'll give you a review session on materials that are not even on the tests and fly through slides and simply asking students to answer questions without clarifying ANYTHING. Also, the tests are WAYYY too long for a 50 minute time period. Prepared to not have any thinking time in exam
So much reading it's insane for a breath course. She is really moody all the time, not approachable. The class had no homework or quizzes, so was based soley on 3 exams. These exams are all free response with so many questions there's no way to finish in time. I only took this class bc it was the only thing open with no discussion now I see why.
I took this class when I was a freshman, and I still remember it b/c I failed it. This class is way too brutal to be listed as a breadth course. 3 long free response exams and that's it. Oh, and no curve. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU'RE AN EXPERT IN CLASSICAL STUDIES
