Very friendly, cares about her students. Helpful and clear.

really nice, fun, a real character, cool, real person, easy to talk to, approachable, HELPFUL in office hours. a GOOD teacher.
i can't stand her. she is such a bad teacher that at first she almost comes across as not being intelligent. now i have decided she completely knows her stuff, she just happens to be unable to explain it all with any clarity.
Wendy definitely graded harder than the others, I thought I was doing so badly (so many C's on lab reports!), so I took the class for pass/fail. I actually did very well, but it was too late. Go for Dalbey...
She's a nice teacher but not the brightest in the business.
very hard grader and doesn't curve the class. students are expected to complete an answer booklet, which makes up 90% of the quizes (5 of them) and the final. however, if you understand the booklet and answer them correctly, you will do fine.
wendy was a very caring and dedicated teacher. she always was willing to do anything it took to help you understand what was going on. after talking with her I always felt like I knew how to do the work ahead of me. I'm going to take another class w/her.
wendy is a pretty easy grader if you do her little booklet thing. all the quiz questions come from the booklet, so if you study hard enough you will get an A. it is clear, though, that she doesn't always know what she is talking about.
Wendy is ****in awesome. she was good to all her students as long as you got the work done on time with suffiecient effort asnd understanding of the material. Why they let her go is a mystery to me and a problem that should be corrected. Wendy we all ove you. Stay up. peace.
almost too easy. very interested in helping students. smells like cigarettes. not the smartest person around.
You are the best
She is a good teacher....wants all of her students to pass. Very very helpful and understanding to her student's problems. I wasn't interested in this stuff at all, but now I'm into it. I love how she rocks the diet rockstars!!!
Really caring and respectful professor. Willing to help student understand the concepts and very approachable. As long as you do her problem sets from the reader...you're set! Quizzes/final taken straight from the problem sets so make sure your answers are correct. Would totally recommend taking biochem with her. Thanks Wendy for all your help!
Clear, prepared, and helpful. She cares about her students and loves biology.
the best bio teacher i have ever had. very organized notes, which you print out and bring to class to fill in. she gives problem sets that are not due but used on her quizes. I took this in the summer so it was hard to keep up but i kept up well and did well. Very good overall.
Wendy Rothwell is a wonderful human being. Her class on the human genome was way easier than expected. I'm mixed as to whether thats a good thing.
She is a great teacher, and very helpful!
i loved her teaching style where she uses outlines for notes and work booklets to help you study for tests. maybe that seems very high school for some people but i thought it was refreshing because I knew exactly what the professor wanted me to know, and it was less time spent flipping through my crappy looking notes before a test. i like how she's kinda ditzy acting, it's cute and makes her approachable to easily intimidated students like myself.
Quite possibly the best instructor I have had. Extremely clear, helpful and knowledgeable. Tests are well written and reflect the notes.
she teaches biochem for the summer session. class consists of 4 or 5 weekly quizzes and a final. 90% of all test questions are problems word for word from the reader. this is absolutely the way to go if you need to take biochem and are around for the summer. it was almost too easy.
GE class but still really good. She makes it very easy to do well in her class and is so nice! I look foward to having other biology classes with Wendy.
I love Wendy! I'm not a science person, but I understood the topics in class, and I was interested. She's really excited about the subject, too. She gets off-topic and wastes time sometimes, but she's still a really good teacher. I highly reccommend the Human Genome class.
She's the kind of person you want to just put in your pocket and walk around with. That way, when you get upset, you can pull her out and she can smile and laugh and tell a story and make you happy again. Class was a little over-simplified, but I blame the students, not the teacher.
Wendy is definitely the most enthusiatic and caring lecturers out there. Both the lectures and exams are so straight forward (80% of the quizzes/final come directly from the reader). Lots of info, but she lets you know the important stuff. That being said, she taught us some cool things (Atkins, Heart Attacks) which ties into the biochem processes.
She provided interesting lectures and was very upbeat, but I don't know why some student would want to put her in their pocket.. (2 entries down) She is obsessed with Diet Rockstars and cats. There's not much else to know.
If you need the TN, I recommend you take this class. Wendy makes this course very accessible to everyone! It does get boring, but her enthusiasm pulled me through. Her notes are clear; you won't ever need to open the text. Composed of super easy HWs and exams that are fair. Getting an A requires some work, but it's NOT hard to get. Take it already!
She makes Biochem very easy... she tells you exactly what you need to know. An interesting and clear lecturer. I highly recommend taking biochem in the summer with her.
real sweet teacher who curves her test like crazy so at the end of the class (most) pass. its really laid back (boring), so if u cant take the heat dont take the class--everything is based on her lectures (EVERYTHING!). hw is pretty weird, but easy--no discussion!!
awful class.
She's a real sweetheart, enthusiastic about what she does. She'll help you and answer al questions. If she doesn't have an answer for you, she'll go home and look it up and get back to you the next class. Tests are directly from the lecture notes, so go to class and follow along!! It's not that hard people. Good GE credit.
She means well, but she's awkward. She always seems nervous. The class was pretty easy, just a few HW assignments, exams, and papers. The HW is really important, if you don't turn it in at all your grade can drop a lot. All in all, the class was interesting.
My favorite professor at UCSC! Took her for 20A this summer as well. Tests are based purely on lecture and usually MC/TF, one word answers. She's eccentric about the subject and sorta quirky in a cool unique way. If she doesn't know an answer she will look it up and have the answer the next lecture. I wish she taught upper division classes.
As a non Bio/BME major taking this class, I got confused about what exactly she was talking about. I still managed a pretty easy A though. You probably want to go to lectures and cram a lot for tests.
The class was difficult, but not impossible. If you complete all the assignments you will be fine. Class is not necessary to go to if you get the lecture notes.
This was an intro to biotech class. It was new on campus, first time taught. The lectures were pretty boring but it helps alot on the test. If you just study from her lectures you'll be fine in the class. Her homeworks were pretty easy. If you do all her homeworks, you'll be fine.
Wendy is a does a really poor job as a teacher. Her teaching methods are very boring and useless. She explains things in a very unclear and confusing manner. Additionally Wendy is an extremely hard grader; make sure that you read her test questions thoroughly and answer them completely.
While certainly not a subject of utmost interest for me coming into the class initially, I'd like to say that biochem100 is a really easy and fun class. Lectures and handout questions from the booklet basically are your exams. If you do them and get the answers, you're good to go. Easy A. Word for the wise, read each question carefully. :D
Really nice, sweet teacher, very enthusiastic for her subject. Human Genome isn't a very interesting class though, mostly just a review of basic biology, easy for anyone who took AP in high school or any bio classes in college. Didn't really talk much about the human genome project because we fell behind, she's easily distracted by questions.
I hate Bio, but this class is not really hard. You have to try really hard not to pass. If you do all your homework and read over you lecture notes, you're good to go. Easy way to fulfill the T2 requirement.
REALLy cool class. Interesting and pretty easy. She has notes already made and basically you go to class and fill out the blanks. And her tests are all based straight out of the notes. Clear and simple. Very enthusiastic teacher especially for morning class. Enjoyed this course very much.
Wendy is a wonderful professor. Though she can be distracted by questions, she'll always look up the answer if she doesn't know. If you need personal help, she is great and very approachable. Workload isn't hard for a T2 class, though study well for exams, as certain minute details of DNA and the genome can be difficult if you don't like chem.
Wendy is a very talented professor. She knows everything there is to know about Biology. Your grade is based on how much effort you put in. She doesn't try to trick you, she doesn't want you to do bad, she just wants you to learn a little bit about biology. The material in this class is similar to AP Bio. You actually have to work but great class!
She is a great professor and such a dork! She always laughs at herself and gets very excited about the subject she teaches. It's obvious she loves her job and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Great professor, I would take a class taught by her again. Material is not too hard either.
I had no prior knowledge in the subject of her class, but she made an intimidating topic completely understandable and approachable. I adored her class and learned a ton; I definitely reccomend it, especially for a GE
Very cheerful teacher, sometimes a little awkward, though not in a bad way. There was no curve for my class, however, she gives extra credit points for catching mistakes, which basically gives you at least a 5% grade boost. Despite 2 C midterms and a B on the final, I ended up with an A in the class.
Fantastic teacher. She's a great lecturer and makes everything very easy to understand. If you don't understand something from lecture, she's available afterwords to answer any questions. Not only does she answer them well, but she really understands what you're asking, and answers appropriately. She is the reason I decided on bio major.
Very good teacher. Made genetics easy to understand. Homework is easy and helps your grade a lot. Tests aren't that bad, and help your grade more than hurt it.
As far as teaching a topical biology course I'm sure she's just fine, but when a professor is teaching upper division biology they should go a littler further than reading off a powerpoint presentation. If you show up to lecture, take vigorous notes and get the answers at discussion you'll get an A. Otherwise an utterly useless class and prof.
Wendy is really enthusiastic and always has a smile on her face. She really loves what she teaches and gives very clear useful lectures. She really wants everyone do do well and there really isn't and excuse not to an A!
Took her Intro to bio engineering class (as well as her human genome one).Wendy is such a wonderful professor! Clear lecture notes with enough detail. I'm not saying the class was easy because it wasn't. Shes there to answer ANY questions but its still your responsiblility to learn the information! Just study the lectures and go through the text.
Here's the thing: Wendy is really great, but her class is not easy. For the midterm I studied only the lecture notes she provided for us and I got a D; you really have to study the drawings and figures as well. I went to her office hours and it seemed like she genuinely cared about my grade in her class. I would recommend her class!
You absolutely in no way need to buy the textbook for this class; she never uses it. In fact, she mostly contradicts it and tells us why it's wrong. So yeah, don't buy it.
easy.... but her quizzes at the end are kinda hard if you don't pay attention, and that is hard when class is at 6:00 pm.
She's alright. Study the lecture material and you will do fine. 1 midterm and 1 final. 3 page research paper. Short hwk every week. Took the class because had a good experience with her before. She even wrote me a letter of recommendation for a scholarship. Attend lecture for drawings not included online that help with tests! Don't buy the book.
I think that Wendy is a really good professor. Her lecture outlines are long but give you all the information for the tests. I hardly used the book, I wouldn't recommend buying it unless for cheap. As long as you understand the material and study her study guides, you will do fine. I have had her for two classes and she is really nice.
this class wasnt quite as easy as i expected. the homeworks were very easy and if you give the paper some good effort you will get lots of points for it. The problem for me was her tests. Rothwell uses a packet of multiple choice, short answer, matching type test and you have to know the details to do well on it. managed a b+. take as a last resort
I did not enjoy this class. The homework could be completed by an infant. I did not appreciate the note format and how much paper it wasted. The first three weeks were 8th grade bio review. The class gives the impression that it's an easy-A joke right up until the first midterm. The tests are bizarrely difficult. The class does not prepare u 4 them
Professor Rothwell seemed kind at first but when I pointed out a grading mistake on my homework, she was extremely rude to me. The exams were ridiculously difficult and she'd mumble to herself a lot during lecture which I found really annoying. If you're taking this class for a TN, pick a different class or take it as a P/NP.
She is so sweet and awesome! I've had her for multiple classes. Her lectures and the notes she provides you with are very clear and concise so you know exactly what to study for. Of course its going to take effort on your part to do well as her tests are challenging (which i enjoyed) but also VERY FAIR!
assigned midterm the day after halloween, god that was so terrible I couldn't even enjoy that weekend that's how sad it was
She is very enthusiastic about teaching even if she isn't the best at it. Great at answering questions and usually looks up answers to questions she doesn't know. I personally like genetics/biology so I enjoyed it overall but many get bored by her lectures. Midterms are okay if you put in the time to study. Homework is only following instructions.
This course is easy if you come to every lecture and know how to study. If you do the assignments and study for tests an A is very attainable. Wendy really cares about her subject, and she is very clear about what material will be on tests. Her lectures are really clear.
This class is designed & taught as if she were teaching science majors. I did not understand the majority the topics. I did all the homeworks (which you could turn in late!), 43/50 on the paper & failed all the tests and got a C+. Yay for curves! She's a nice lady & it is heartwarming to see a professor love what they are teaching :]
Wendy is a great professor who is really passionate about teaching. Her class definitely requires work but if you do all the homework and study for tests you will be fine. She is very helpful and is always urging students to go to her office hours. Her tests can be difficult but they are not unfair, yay for curves. Overall a great instructor.
Wasn't bad at all. Don't bother buying the book,as you will only need to study from the lecture notes. Free points with the paper and the homeworks (50% of the grade). Tests can be tricky, and are more about semantics than about how much you know science, but are curved. She's very knowledgeable, but sitting through her classes was very boring.
Exams are much more detailed and difficult than the guides suggest, but she curves. Homeworks and paper are easy. She def has a passion for what she teaches and her humor is endearing. Be prepared for some detailed chem and bio, I was expecting more of an overview type course.
This class is really technical and if you're not into the material then it will be torture for you to go to class. She is sweet and very passionate about her work, she puts a smile on your face. (: Only take if you're a BME major or BIO major. for GE take something easier. like 80h
If you're planning to take Human Genome for a GE (not easy), I HIGHLY DON'T recommend her. I was excited for a genetics class, but found the lectures off topic and not engaging. It was dry & filled with an excess of awkwardly bad jokes. If you go to her office hours, she's nice and tries to help--but definitely not good at teaching.
Don't know what the previous person is talking about, this Human Genome class is really easy and the lectures are straight forward and generally interesting. All you need to do to do well is go to class and study the lecture notes for the test.
the class moves at such a fast speed it's very hard to keep up and it's so easy to get behind. Turn in all of your homework!! Office hours are super helpful but her class is not very interesting. I had an interest in genetics prior to Biotech and she definitely took that interest away.
Her class is very fast paced. It was hard to keep up but she will sacrifice her time to help you if you couldn't make it to her office hours. I honestly didn't understand anything in class and she said her tests are very detailed (I agree) but if you memorize her outlines she provides, you'll do fine! (I was surprised since I didn't know a thing!)
She is very sweet and helpful. Her lectures for Bioethics were easy to understand half of the time and complicated the other half of the time. Some of her lectures are rushed and have to be reviewed for the midterm and final.
Had her for Bioethics and this quarter for The Human Genome. She clearly has a strong interest in the subjects she teaches, especially genetics,s and it shows through her teaching. She's really fair and nice. If you e-mail her with an interest in a topic she'll send you back articles on it. She's really smart but also knows how to explain it simply
Very genuine professor. Doesn't expect much out of her students, and she doesn't offer very challenging material. Exams are based entirely off her lectures. No point in buying book. Easy A if you study lectures. One fault. I wrote an essay and got a bad grade, because I was expressing a theory I had; instead of following her prompt...
She wasn't very helpful; it was really hard to communicate with her. The subject matter was interesting, but she made it really boring. I don't suggest taking this class.
This was my least favorite class, but she was a nice teacher. I did not use my textbook once because she bases all her tests on the lecture notes.
Class is mostly memorization but there is tons of it. Background in Bio is helpful but I got an A without it. Wendy can be boring as the quarter wares on but she is very clear and nice if you go to lecture.
Everything is based on lecture outlines and notes written in class. Don't buy the book. One 3 pg essay, midterm, and final. Hw is based on online readings/ notes. Just memorization and diagrams are useful. Study guides and sessions give you the answers to the test. She's REALLY nice and will help outside of class but her lectures are boring. A
She tests directly from her lecture note outlines (outlines are online). You do not need to buy the textbook. I did not use the textbook and received 92% on the 1st midterm and 94% on the 2nd. Just read over your lecture notes every day (takes about 20 min) and you will get an A. There are 4 HW assignments that take about 2 hrs and 1 3 pg paper.
Class is super interesting if you put in a the time. I'm a senior biology major and without having a background in biology I think this class would have been very tough. Lots of material but all so interesting and important to know! Wendy is very nice, approachable and enthusiastic. Take this class if interested in science but not for an easy GE
A very knowledgable and respectable professor. She is also quite open-minded. Content was interesting, however she expects you to know and memorize a heavy amount of information for her midterm and final. Do every single homework assignment and you should at least receive a passing grade for the class. For exams, she curves, if that helps you.
It was easy to get distracted in her class because of how boring her lectures were. You can just study and memorize most of the things from lecture outlines to get a good grade. Just make sure you follow all of her guidelines.
The material is very dry and dense though she releases a study guide before tests narrowing down what you need to study. Know everything mentioned, clarify unknowns in office hours and you'll do well. Homework is worth a very large portion of your grade. Textbook is un-needed as most figures are available online. There is also a minor curve.
Was very easy to get the A even though I only attended class once a week to turn in homework. Homework was fairly simple and had clear directions and was more of a "Walkthrough" of a site or article than actual work. She tells you in a study guide what topics will be on the test and sticks to what she says. Great, enthusiastic and kind professor!
She does not care about your learning and does not put in any effort to help you. Class is extremely boring.
She does not care to help or care for the students who do not understand the course. The lectures are very long and boring. The homework assignments are somewhat clear but the topics we learn are not very organized. Beware of using a lot of printing paper and ink for lecture notes. Her TA is alright but not very enthusiastic in teaching either.
Rothwell's a very nice professor who's extremely clear about what you should expect from the class. Her lectures are a tad bit boring, but she basically tells you everything you need for the test via the study guide. The study guide covers EVERYTHING on the test, so make sure you do the study guide and know it well. If you do so, tests are easy
Rothwell is absolutely wonderful. She's very easy to communicate with and extremely helpful, but don't let this cloud the fact that attendance is required!! A lot of reading, homework packets, good lecture notes are needed in order to pass with anything better than a C+. I'd definitely take another class of hers.
Rothwell is a nice lady who's generally reasonable with grading, and I found that her interest and knowledge in the class material really came through in her lectures. There's only 4 homework assignments, and they're usually not difficult. Tests are based off lectures, but some questions can be asked in a tricky way. Overall solid class.
She is extremely knowledgeable about biotechnology, and will inform the class about the latest updates in the field. She welcomes questions, even during lecture. If she doesn't have an answer for you, she will research it on her own time and get back to you the next class. The class covers a lot of material, so expect to study hard for tests!
She can be confusing to some students, but I found that if you take good notes, (even is it feels like you've been in class for all eternity) you will do well. Also, study study study for the midterm and final
One midterm and one final. All you need to do is print out her notes and attend lectures. Textbook is not mandatory but it def helps if you want to understand more bc biotech can be confusing. She can go through a lot of stuff in one lecture, so make sure to stay on track. Hw is easy but the test might be a little hard if you struggle in the class.
The tests are based on her lectures (she gives you outlines to these online and you take notes on them). It helped me to also read the book but it's not tested on the book at all. She's very accepting and was very aware of her influence and made sure to teach acceptance via biology and to question everything. She was amazing!
Awesome professor. Helps you in any way possible. Uploads lecture outlines, TA notes, and topics of what's coming on the exam straight from her lecture, which you can watch online on webcast. Exams are not tough at all and the final isn't cumulative so as long as you understand what she's saying in lecture you'll do good on the exams
Very straight forward teacher and provides a very good outline for you to study. she never required outside reading and everything she goes over in class is what is on the test.
Wendy is a good professor but her teaching style is pretty boring. This class is easy but that doesn't mean you should underestimate it because there's a lot of information that is not exactly common sense to most people. There's a midterm, 3 page research paper, and final which are all fairly easy. Study and don't procrastinate and you'll be okay.
By far one of the best teachers, and coolest classes I've taken at UCSC! She is a super cool, and passionate instructor who genuinely cares about making sure the students understand the material she's covering. If you have a basic knowledge of biology/chemistry it will be a breeze. That being said still study, some of the questions are pure memory
Rothwell is a concise and interesting professor who is super knowledgeable about genetics and is good at explaining things so that even beginner can comprehend. The grading was super clear (3 non cumulative tests, 4 hour long homework, one paper) and she was always reachable outside class. Lectures are webcast so you can make class up if you miss.
Wendy is super sweet, her lectures are pretty slow/broadcasted. Weekly hw based on her lectures due in class, one research paper w/group presentations, and midterm and final. This class is memorization heavy and would be VERY difficult if you haven't taken various bio courses already.
Amazing teacher, she's very knowledgeable, understanding and a bit quirky. She gives you lots of opportunities to be successful in class, but if you don't show up to lecture or KNOW the material, you will do badly. The tests are incredibly difficult and precise to truly see your capability. Don't expect an easy A unless you're already familiar.
Overall, I think Professor Rothwell is bio teacher that can actually explain things WELL, which I have found really rare for bio professors. The class wasn't that difficult, and this is coming from someone whose last bio class was in high school. hws are pretty easy. lectures are broadcasted, and if you listen and study, you will do well.
This is a very hard class, if ur not know the material itself (beyond the notes) very well u cannot get a good grade. Professor DID NOT make the Exams based on the Notes!! HIGHLY suggest taking with p/np. If ur not a bio major PLEASE DO NOT TAKE this class. NOTICE: NO EXTRA CREDIT will be provided!!!!
