He's a good professor but it isn't an easy class. However, I think that he makes the class enjoyable and really prepares you for the future.
He is a great Professor, who is funny and really smart. He makes class interesting and prepares you for life. He can throw too much shade too well, but I love it. He teaches well and you won't regret taking him!
He cold calls the students who obviously havent done the work in class, even when there are kids raising their hands, and when they cant answer his questions he will go on a 15 minutes tangent about how disappointed he is that nobody is doing the work. Super disorganized, not a nice person, and a average at best teacher. Not the worst Professor.
Dr. Gu is an amazing professor. The course is a bit lecture heavy but that is due to the class itself, ISOM, not the professor. Regardless, He keeps the lectures interesting and it really shows. Beyond the classroom Dr. Gu is invested in the academics and lives of his students. He wants to get to know his students and cares about their futures.
If you are hard working and don't ask questions for the heck of asking them, you'll be fine. I loved learning for him and definitely taking a class with him again!
Gu is OG. His class isn't too hard if you prepare beforehand, study for exam, and do what you're supposed to. He's a bit sassy, but deeply cares about his students and their goals. He will answer any question and have tons of office hours. The class is graded by very few things, however.
Class is quite easy but I would be slightly wary of Gu if you've never taken stats b4. He doesn't really like answering questions and can be sassy. Doesn't really cover basics of stats and jumps straight into application qs. One of those professors people love or strongly dislike but most people loved him/had no problem. Funny/cares about students.
The class itself is doable, but it wasnt because of content provided by the professor or his lectures, but from a lot of outiside work and learning on my own. He scolds students for not going to his office hours, but when you go he literally calls you "stupid" and makes you feel bad for asking geniune questions. Very disorganized lectures.
I went to office hours and asked a valid question. He refused to explain it blatantly just because I was confused. He thinks he's being helpful, but he's not. Also makes weird unnecessary patrilineal remarks in class that make me uncomfortable. If possible, avoid him at all costs. If not, go pre-med
I was looking forward to taking this class since I'm an ISOM major. Wow. Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. Both as a professor and a mentor, he was incredibly rude, unfriendly, cold, unwilling to answer questions, highly critical of the class, and overall just straight up disrespectful. For those who didn't take AP Stats in HS, good luck!
I dont get those reporting "unwilling to answer questions" I went to his office hour twice and he was always patient n respectful. I like that he chooses to inspire students to solve the question instead of giving a direct answer. The online page is clear n organized but concepts indead delivered in a confusing order. Should improve the syllubus
He is actually okay. A pretty knowledgable professor and sometimes humorous. This class overall is doable for me as someone who hadn't taken AP stat and bad at math. Office hour not helpful but there are TAs or u just figure out yourself. The excel projects took long time. If you have to take this class just take it, don't get scared.
He is a little all over the place and does like to cold call students in class, so come prepared. Much better in a 1 on 1 setting. His tests are pretty representative of what we learned in class. He is new to Emory so it might just be an adjustment period.
Not sure why Gu has 1 ratings - not the best professor but definitely not the worst! Yes, he can be kind of sassy but he's still respectable and funny and cares about his students. Uploads lectures/board scans/supplemental material in a timely manner. Class is pretty easy although outside studying is NECESSARY. glad I took him over Steve Walton
Dr. Gu (deep down) really cares about his students. He does not accepting half baked work or attitudes. He sometimes comes off as rude in how he phrases things, but he really is trying to help students. I wish he could be more flexible about some things like providing feedback on a project before we turn it in.
Amazing lectures. Explained the material very clearly. A bit passive-aggressive which is why I think some students don't like him, but cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. Did a good job of connecting all the material together. If you skip class, he posts slides/board scans online. Do the online modules! Would recommend him!
dont understand the negative reviews... Dr. Gu is a great prof. though he does cold call on students he also made it clear many times that if you feel uncomfortable for any reason to reach out to him
He's actually a nice guy if you get to know him! He cares about his students.
take this mans class he is a king
I think that most if not all of the bad reviews here are more due to student error than the workings of Dr. Gu. As a student who did not show up to class or office hours as much as I should have I can say that my grade was a result of my doing. The times when I did go to class or office hours I felt that I was learning without being given answers.
Not a good professor at all and super unprofessional. Try to avoid taking him if you can.
Professor Gu can be slightly harsh to his students, but its definitely because he cares about them and wants us to succeed without being handed an easy A. He was always so helpful during office hours, so I highly recommend going for any questions or just to talk! He always has a lot to share, and its a great way to get to know him.
Always willing to help students out when they struggle with topics, really cares about students learning. Doesn't try to be tricky with the quizzes or exams -- they're usually like the practice but a little harder. Would recommend taking him for ops.
Professor Gu is one of my favorite professors at bschool. He is so caring and supportive. Course structure and concept are clearly explained, with study guides and all kinds of study materials you will need on Canvas. Taking online courses is not an easy thing for me, but Professor Gu makes it interesting and wonderful!!
Wen Gu is a great professor, he inspired me to study operations more. He is great with technology and is spot on in terms of organizing the material and explaining concepts (teaching)
Professor Gu is a new professor that's gradually becoming more and more popular. The extended effort he puts into his lectures, assignments, and slides to promote student engagement and learning comprehension is clearly evident each class. he He can be stern at times; if he is, it is usually because the class is not putting in the right work.
I took Dr. Gu last spring and he was really accommodating due to changes with COVID/online learning. He is one of the few teachers I've had at Emory that truly prioritizes his students -- he genuinely cares that his students learn the material and responds to emails quickly. In addition to office hours he takes time to meet with and help students.
I think Prof. Gu heard criticisms from his first year teaching and put effort into being more caring and warm towards his students. He is an excellent professor and extraordinarily nice. Plus, he followed me on instagram.
Wen Gu is the worst professor I have ever had. He is so rude and unhelpful to his students. He doesn't give you the correct tools for you to achieve what he is expecting out of you. Impossible exams. Passive-aggressive and doesn't answer student's questions. Overall, unwelcoming enviornment.
I love ISOM 350, one of my favorite classes I've taken so far. However, Dr. Gu doesn't care about his students on an individual level. I had a family emergency the night of the midterm, scored poorly, and he refused to work with me at all. Now despite having a 99 avg besides that, it is impossible for me to make an A. Just keep that in mind
He's a decent teacher but he is SO CONDESCENDING to anyone and everyone that asks a question. I was never able to ask questions because he is so rude! If you take him, just do your work independently and figure it out on your own.
He's alright but if you get behind just be prepared to do alot of catch up work because he won't stop for you and if you ask a question he makes you feel uncomfortable. Has a good structure and is a fair grader.
He clearly puts a lot of effort into his lectures and assignments. Takes his job very seriously and truly cares that the students succeed without being handed an easy A. You really have to put all of your effort in; if you don't, he will notice. Exams are like the practice but a bit harder. Make sure you get a good group for group assignments.
Professor Gu was honestly one of the worst professors Ive ever had! Hes very condescending and his grades are typically based on whether or not he likes you! He also doesnt really follow the curve and adds different components to grades (like live class participation) that no one knows about!
Loved this class and loved Dr. Gu. My only critique would be that this isn't a very difficult course, but it is sort of difficult to get an A because the only two exams you have are only out of 18 points. So if you get two questions wrong you are already down to a B+. Kind of ridiculous, but his teaching was great.
Professor Gu was such a good professor! Participation really matters in his class so make sure you speak up and answer questions. Course was not difficult as long as you follow along and kept up with your assignments. Highly recommend taking any class taught by Professor Gu.
The material wasn't bad. Gu explains everything well and I thought it was pretty easy to get a grasp of. It is annoying though that there are only 2 tests and they're out of 18 points, so theres little room to mess up or you're down to a B. Gu is a nice person but can be passive aggressive and can come off as rude sometimes. Group work every class
great lectures and really good at explaining concepts. very clear criteria. makes study guides with practice problems for midterm and final. there are group projects and tasks at every lecture. receptive to feedback and understanding of circumstances (ie removing a project during midterms season)
I honestly think Wen Gun is devoid of human empathy. I missed a couple weeks of class because my mom was hospitalized with COVID and he berated me in front of a classroom of 60 people and didn't even blink when I started openly sobbing. He just walked away and acted disgusted. What kind of person does that? Bad professor, too. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Gu is definitely my favorite B-school prof. He is great at explaining complicated concepts clearly and offers plenty of practice that matches the exams. I had no stats or excel experience prior to this class and have not had any trouble. Plus, he has a cute instagram and gives out treats for participation! Snag a spot in his class!
My only complaint with him is that is lectures can be very repetitive and boring. Other than that, he's a very nice guy (he gives out snacks), gives extra credit, and his tests are pretty easy. Very little homework too. If you took Stats in HS, you will find this class a breeze.
He never cares for his students at all. He just makes you feel very uncomfortable after asking a question. If you take him, be sure to have a good study group and be independent in your studies. He is very condescending to people who ask questions and he is very rude to his students.
Very bad Professor. He doesn't know how to respect his students
Prof. Gu makes this class somewhat enjoyable. Although the content can be dry at times, his quips and comparisons make the material easier to comprehend. He clearly cares about his students by bringing snacks to lectures and being very accessible outside of class. The class goes by pretty quickly so don't miss a ton of lectures without catching up.
Lots of group assignments and quizzes through Canvas. Need to keep up with your work. Not the best professor when it comes to explaining information. Make sure to go to office hours. Don't forget to participate!
Very organized. Always tries to get feedback from students to improve the effectiveness of his teaching and keep things interesting. Expects a lot from his students, however wants you to do well & gives you every opportunity to do so. Gives attitude at times, but mostly when lack of effort it shown. Pick your group for projects wisely.
Delivers information in a very straightforward way. Provides good resources to help with studying. He can be mean if he feels like you aren't trying hard enough. As long as you're engaged and make use of the resources he gives, you'll be good. The group projects are fine as long as a few ppl put in a bit of effort.
His lectures are super clear and structured. He makes hard contents easy. Great Professor and great lecturer! I like him a lot!
Professor Gu does not care about his students, will not respond to your emails, and will round down your grade. Don't take his class!!!!!! His lectures are boring and he can't take a joke.
Professor Gu knows the field well but he is not a good lecturer and is not approachable. It was impossible to pay attention during his lectures which were dry and filled with awkward silences. He cant explain core concepts clearly. Lots of busy work, and watch out for the final grade and the curve. Avoid if possible.
I enjoyed having Professor Gu as a teacher this semester. His best attribute in my opinion is his ability to dive deeply into the material so his students truly understand what is going on. Students tend to do well in his ISOM 350 class, which can result in people getting curved down though.
Professor Wen Gu is probably one of the best professors Ive ever had. He is super approachable and gave me great advice in terms of studying for his class as well as how to prepare for my future. If he taught other classes I would be the first one to sign up. Love him <3
Professor Gu is one of my favorite professors I have had. He made the ISOM material easy to understand for all students regardless of if they had statistics or Excel background coming in to the course. He was very accessible outside of class and was straightforward about all expectations. Would strongly recommend!
Professor Gu is an amazing professor who cares about you understanding the content rather than just memorizing it. The grading criteria is very clear and the tests are pretty straightforward and consistent with the rigor of other assignments. Participation is mandatory. Meet with him for coffee to get to know him because hes a real gem!
Professor Gu made such an effort to get to know his students offering coffee chats weekly. He is a very engaging lecturer providing real life examples and applications. Additionally, he does a great job of tying together all the material we have learned throughout the year which helps to keep track of and remember all the content.
Professor Wen Gu is an amazing professor who truly cares for his students. He always answered questions in class and was always excited to talk over coffee or during office hours. He offered pretty easy extra credit for group projects which were extremely helpful. I would definitely take him again if he teaches another one in the future!
Professor Wen was a great professor and he was able to explain the complex material covered in ISOM350 in a simpler way that was easy to understand. He was quick to respond to questions over email and after class. He was also always excessible during his office hours whether talking over zoom or going to his office. Would definitely take again.
Overall, I enjoyed the class. He is very accessible outside of class but sometimes when asking questions he could be sarcastic but I think he just wanted us to work for an answer. I also wish there were more opportunities for extra credit and that our grades weren't hidden on canvas because it makes it hard to know where you stand in the class.
Hated his class because the material was boring and he didn't teach well. He's rude to students and isn't very helpful, but if you need to take ISOM 350 his class material is easy enough. Loathed this course but I got an A.
Mr Gu is a really great professor. He's got a lot of energy and cares that his class is informative and enjoyable. He was also accessible outside of class and did his best to connect with his students. The content is pretty clear too. I'd take a class with him again.
Professor Wen was a great professor and explained the material covered in ISOM350 in a way that was easy to understand. He used real world examples for what we did in class to make class fun and handed out candy if you answered a question. Would definitely take again.
He is so unhelpful to his students. He just gets mad and makes you feel uncomfortable when you ask him a question. You'd be better off figuring out solutions to your problems by yourself or having a good study group for the class. Also, be sure to have good relationships with the TA's as they'd be beneficial if ever Gu never answers your questions
Solid professor. Makes you work for your grade and can be stern at times, but class is pretty easy overall. Due to how easy the content is, people tend to do well in the class, resulting in you being curved down if you do not earn close to 100% of the possible points in class.
The Worst professor that I've experienced throughout my time at Emory. Literally doesn't know how to respect students. He is always rude and disrespectful.
He doesn't like students who are not understanding the concepts. He can be very disrespectful to them and will make you feel much worse. He can be mean. Don't take him unless you are a genious who can grind everything on your own.
He is so mean. Don't ask questions to him, as he makes you feel worse. Prepare to have a good study group and just study on your own.
He is a mean professor, but the class is not that hard. But beware of the curve.
He is so mean especially in office hours, and condescending to students who ask questions. Don't take this class unless you find stats easy. Otherwise, he will make your life miserable. This class is easy if you like math, as you can get through by yourself/studying with friends. However beware of the curve. It can be harsh for this course
HE IS SOO MEAN. ONE OF THE WORST HUMAN BEINGS THAT I'VE TALKED TO IN EMORY. HE FAVORS STUDENTS AND ONLY PREFERS CERTAIN STUDENTS. HE DOESNT LIKE STUDENTS WHO ASK QUESTIONS AND ALWAYS MAKES YOU FEEL WORSE. DONT TAKE!!!!!
Professor Gu teaches very well. His canvas page is very organized and class material is fun but repetitive.
He is a good teacher and puts a lot of effort into his classes. He can be a bit condescending after class when you ask him questions but with almost everything about the class available on canvas, I can understand why he would be frustrated.
He is soo mean. Don't take his class. He doesn't know how to respect students
Mean professor, but class is easy. However, beware of the curve. He is not there for any of you. You need to be there for yourself. He will not help you or guide you. He will only make you feel worse and get frustrated easily. Don't ever ask him for help.
I loved professor Gu last semester. He takes lots of time to meet with students and ensure their individual success, even buying students coffee at his office hours to encourage more of them to come. His lectures are clear and well structured and he gives you everything you need to be successful (posts recordings of class, gives practice Q's, etc).
He's not mean at all, just expects you to use some critical thinking with questions. 6 group projects w/ bonus points. Class is soooo easy if you've taken stats. Haven't met with him outside of class but I heard his coffee chats are fun. He really tries to get to know everyone's faces and names.
Professor Gu is fairly unique at Emory. While he is a talented teacher and can explain complex concepts very well, he is extremely unpleasant. He complains daily about his students and will often harass those who are late in front of the whole class. I would avoid him if possible, and if not, make sure you are on time.
Considering I am not much of a "math person", this class really isn't too difficult in terms of coursework. Professor Gu is the not the most caring of teachers and definitely has a bad attitude that he pushes as tough love. The B school curve will get you hard in this class so if you're just considering the B-school, don't start out with this one.
Loved Dr. Gu! The class was so well structured and all of the content on exams was directly from his lectures, so it was easy despite the curve. He has a unique sense of humor which can sometimes come across as mean, but he is actually very caring and helpful. He gives you back the respect you give him if you participate, try, and come to class!
Professor Gu is certainly an amazing professor at Emory University. I wish that he can see this review and know that his teaching style is very catching, inspirational and powerful. People who gave him low ratings and left comments saying that he is mean and disrespectful were just a bunch of losers and didn't dare to face any challenges.
Great professor. Very straightforward and organized class: what you learn in class is what you will see on the test. Yes, the b-school curve makes it somewhat hard to get an A but that is just purely because so many people do very well on his exams. That being said, if you study, you will do well.
Some of the reviewers have not been bantered with and it shows. Prof. Gu breaks down complex concepts to understandable tid-bits every other class. Occasionally he'll roast people who are consistently late, but never have I heard one bit of criticism from him that wasn't true, including at me. Take this class or you might regret heavily missing out
Professor Gu cares about his students and is a great teacher!
If you have drive you will thrive in this class, because Wenjun Gu delivers. His well-versed lectures, unique personality, coffee chats and office hours have given me some of the best advice and experiences I could ever hope for, because he genuinely cares. Ignore those salty students with the 1-ratings, you've got too much to gain. TAKE. HIM.
Overall, Professor Gu is a good professor if you put in effort. He makes himself very accessible outside of class and is willing to help you. However, if you consistently show up late to class, you will be on his bad side. I would definitely recommend him for BUS 350, he breaks down complex topics very well.
Professor Gu is great and cares a lot about his students. His grading is very fair and the classes and assignments prepare you well for the exams. He really cares about your learning and recaps every topic at the start of the class before moving on to new material.
Amazing professor who deserves more love. I took ISOM 350 back during the pandemic, and the class was well organized with sufficient material given for studying for tests. The curve will hurt you, because everyone did well for those exams. WORK HARD, and you will defintely get a good grade.
He was very nice and a really good lecturer. All the lectures were recorded, so class wasn't mandatory. There are a few group assignments as well as individual ones that were heavily graded, so it's important to do well on those. There was one midterm and one final. They should be really light if you pay attention in class.
Wen Gu was not an engaging teacher. His classes are comprised of entire lectures where we go over the same material for three days straight. The biggest challenge in the class is paying attention because the content is so boring. Midterm was light, haven't taken the final yet. Not the worst, but not the best teacher.
Professor Gu is a great teacher, and he is clearly well-versed in teaching this specific course. He can be harsh at times, but it clearly stems from a place of caring that his students are learning and engaged in the material. I recommend taking Professor Gu for the BUS350 prerequisite!
Professor Gu is a great lecturer. He really is caring and takes note of those who really put in effort and work. Definitely use his slides and lectures cuz that's all you need. He can be pretty harsh / mean but it is from a good place. English also isn't his 1st language either so tests can be worded in a way that's hard to understand. He good tho
Does not answer questions well and hard to follow him along in class. He cares about his students but doesn't take the time to understand their needs. I wish he could be more considerate of his student's and help them out.
Course material is super easy. AP Stats or QTM100 is enough to pass half of this course. A handful of class content/mini quizzes are on excel (which he teaches you so don't worry!). Midterm was very easy (2.5 of 5 difficulty). Final was harder (3.5-4 of 5). I screwed up on the final exam :(. ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS TO GET AN A. Great guy!
Slides are very clear, tests weren't too bad, very strict on curve and not the nicest guy
He is a funny guy.
easy course and he knows how to teach, but he has a stinky attitude towards his students. avoid getting on his bad side
Wen Gu is a great professor who cares about his students. Don't be scared because of the ratings! He cares about his students' learning geniunely. His class is not hard at all and he did a great jobs at teaching. Both classes requires minimal work compare to my other business school classes.
I should have learned my lesson after he hoe'd me in bus 350. He's a self proclaimed curving down enthusiast. Nothing gets graded within a month. Curriculum is all copied directly from the internet. Lectures are pretty boring. Feedback isn't very clear and likely just AI generated.
Professor Gu is a caring instructor who makes complex topics digestible. Though lectures can be repetitive, his accessibility and emphasis on engagement make for a rewarding experience. unstuck ai was a helpful study tool alongside the course materials.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He depends on ChatGPT to grade all work and barely connects with students, and then gets upset when students do not want to attend or connect with the material during the lecture. His insecurity and internal conflict to be liked often caused conflict in the class.
