No need to explain!!! Just don't take his class!!!Very unclear!!! Extremely BORING!!! You spend half the time in class trying to figure out what he's trying to say!! I had him for Com 110...and I dropped that class with a quickness!! Take LAMBROS instead!
Dr. Jia is very unclear and he makes this class redo assignments that are completely unnecessary and impertinent to actually learning! Do not take this class from him! I know so many people who have dropped...and I made the mistake of not dropping this class...
He is a good professor. He's one of those teachers who does really well in his field, yet fails to clearly explain the material. Beg, cry, and your paper wont be do Wed, it will be due Friday.
Wenshan Jia is a great comm. teacher. The class involves a lot of interaction and little work. 2 papers that were more like just personal experiences that you relate to communication concepts. A MC and T/F midterm that was easy if you study. It's quite possible to get an A if you do the work.
Dr. Jia is awesome. Though he may be unclear at times, he tries extremely hard to make the class as interesting as possible. For all you kids who dropped his class, you guys lost out on a double counting class :P i highly recommend taking his class because he really does care about the students
This class may be a little boring at times, but the topics are still very interesting.Papers are kept 4 the beginning of the semester and interactive presentations are spread out the rest of the semester. He also encourages students to utilize his office hours. He is very skilled in his field.
i think Jia is excellent. he's definately very learned and educated in his field. if you want him to be specific you have to get specific. he'll be able to tell who really cares about the class and about learning and who doesn't
it seems like the people who had jia for com 110 or 195 did not like him...but i had him for com 211, and i LOVED his class. he does knows a lot about his subject, as everyone said. and yes, the clsas is easy and it double counts! i guess just don't take him for com 110 or com 195 and u'll be fine!
The class isn't too hard if you just read the directions and listen to what Jia has to say and do the work. He's knowledgable in his field and is willing to help you out with whatever you need. Deadlines aren't always set in stone either.
He's def. nice, and means well-If you are having problems he will def. try and help if you go talk to him. As for the class, it was completly boring, his lectures scattered and assingments unclear. I would stay away if you are a com major and actually want to learn...cause I didn't.
There is a lot of work in the class but overall it was pretty easy. You could talk him into anything. My only complaint is that he wasn't clear enough on his assignments. The mid term and final are a piece of cake.
how can anyone say he is great??? this guy is the worst professor ive ever had. i am a comm major and i am furious that i have to keep taking him until i graduate because he cant be fired!! if you dont have to take him, DONT! he treats students like they are stupid. its not fun.
everyone else's comments bout jia is pretty promising n sweet, but as for now- i must say, i never dreaded comm classes as much as i dread all of his. too much researching, reading,n papers N impossible standards! his classes have consumed all my time for school(and all my print credits)
Jia is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is sooo boring, loves to talk about his own work, and is confusing. I am a comm. major so I had to take him, but if you have the option not to I would suggest don't.
No one cares about how wonderful China is and how smart you are. This was the worst class I've had so far at Chapman. He's not hard, but the bordom will lead you to suicide. I also had a lot of trouble understanding his english. Aviod at all costs!
He is a very nice man, I will give him that. His tests are very difficult, and yes he is a horrid teacher. the good news is he is relaizing this, and my class is starting to break him in. he is trying very hard to be helpful- lets you re-take tests, is very flexible w/ deadlines, and not too bad
one word: Tenure.
i hate this class and i can't stand wenshan's way of teaching. he makes me so frustrated sometimes. he's waaay to prideful... can't admit if he makes a mistake. quizzes are fairly easy, but he tends to mark down for dumb reasons without justifying why. he always goes back on his word and then acts as if we're the crazy ones. no thank you.
His class is very hard to sit through, because his lectures are very hard to understand. He does not provide helpful feed back. His assignments are unclear.
Yeah, he's kind of unclear and his lectures are often rambling and pointless, but you have to accept that to an extent-- the class is very easy. I didn't really study for the midterm (I just skimmed the assigned chapters) and finished it within 7-8 minutes. One 6-8 page paper, but he's not a hard grader. Not as bad of class as it's made out to be
hes FRESH OFF THE BOAT. he might be smart (but what comm major is smart? he called a skate board a "roller coaster" hes a comm teacher that cant communicate....he sucks
Wenshen Jia is a very smart man.Intercultural communications is a TOUGH class. Just pay attention, take notes,& you'll be fine. Theres a mid-term, a big paper, 3 group projects, and a final. By the way, the "fresh off the boat" comment is totaly uncalled for. Its ironic though, seems like you didn't get a good grade in INTERCULTURAL communications
He's an okay guy. Talks A LOT about China. Seems like the only "other" culture he really cares about. Inflamed our whole class though, making a comment that us West-Coast Americans are very much the cowboys and indians. Where the heck did that come from?
rambled forever and never connected things i learned nothing and i went to every class
just like the other person said. He rambles and goes off on irrelevant subjects. Not to mention the fact that his material is very uninteresting. But he seems like he's a nice, smart asian man.
He doesn't use powerpoint slides, but he uses transparencies but he won't back the damn projector up to enlarge the damn transparencies. I STRONGLY recommend you get this class over with during interterm, because you'd probably want to commit suicide if you were in this class for 16 weeks.
I started off the semester in two classes with this guy. It took less than 2 weeks for me to realize that if I ever had to sit through another one of his lectures I would just die of BOREDOM, because he talks soooo slooooow and about absolutely NOTHING!! its just a pointless hassle to waste your time with this guy! yes, i dropped the class and ran!
Unfortunately, everything posted here is TRUE. He is a BRILLIANT MAN - there's no doubt he knows his stuff (Just Google his name!), however knowledge of a subject does NOT mean you're going to be able to teach it. His lectures ARE boring. He DOES use faded transparancies. If you can get past that though, it's a fairly easy class.
I don't get all the reviews saying how hard his class is. There's no doubt that he and his class is boring and that his lectures are unclear and pointless, but the class is so easy. Just goes to show that Chapman students feel entitled to everything and the second something like a light language barrier comes up, they whine about the class. Jesus.
Take Jia for the capstone course! You are allowed to pick any topic that interests you, and can rewrite papers. The class is basically writing 5 papers, each building off of the one before it. Just meet with him a couple times and send him emails and he will love you. An easy A if you just try a little bit.
I was so scared to take this class, but it wasnt that bad. Send him papers and stuff to look over ahead of time and he will be so impressed. For tests and quizes pretty much memorize practice problems. Dont bother reading, just show up. Any campus event can be extra credit, just talk to him. I ended up with a B+, but could have tried harder.
Easy class. Lectures are boring (I had him for 3 hours), but the class was an easy A. He let us take open book tests, and offered extra credit. Also, he seemed willing to help anybody who needed it, and was understanding.
not too difficult, hardly use the book until the final. 2 open book/note tests incl. the final. lectures are scatter-brained and incomprehensible. uses very abstract terms to describe subject matter. favors projects on sinoism.
Class is SOOOOOO boring! Lectures are stupid and pointless, but if you can manage to sit through it, it double counts, and overall, it's a pretty easy class. If you want to learn everything there is to know about China, and not communication, then you should take this class.
What a joke, loves the sound of his voice, won't answer questions, and always talks himself up. If you hate profs who put up one slide and talk about it for 3 hours, avoid this class... I wish I had. Also, his ideas of "American culture" are completely off; for the tests, go with what he would say, not what you would say or what is actually right.
going to class was a daily struggle. jia is painfully boring. although he promises broadening your cultural perspectives, he is extremely biased and ethnocentric towards Asians, his own background. It's basically a study of everything he's interested in. we never studied australia, canada, africa, russia, europe, south america... he makes up words!
Everyone told me this teacher was impossible to understand and that the class was very difficult. He really knows his stuff and is proud of being a teacher. Read the book and do not fall behind on the blackboard postings and you will do fine. I made the mistake of not reading the book for the first test.
let me sum up Jia's class or should i say Culture Mountain...this is what i learned: that my parents paid too much for me to listen to him babble about crap. all he cares about is china and the chinese people in the class, he tells you to google everything...in chinese, he makes up words that have meanings, which he also makes up, you learn nothin
This really is the worst class ever. You would think that as a professor having to teach an interterm class one would try and make it a little interesting. I find myself constantly drifting off and completely tuned out to what he lectures on, which is primarily China. This class is awful!!!
Chapman University should be ASHAMED that they let him still teach. He is honest to God the worst professor I have ever had. He is very proud of himself, and teaches solely from his own famed lectures and writings. He accepts NO opinions other than the right opinion (his own). If it's the last thing I do, I will make sure he gets fired. What a wast
I cannot rate Jia any lower for this class. He cannot see beyond his own misguided, China-centered, egotistical ideals to teach anything remotely resembling a coherent lecture. If I were to ever ask Chapman for my money back for a class, this one would be the top of my list. Avoid at all costs.
the worst professor ever! Very unclear and does not teach what should be taught, instead focuses on his studies and asian cultures in a COM THEORY class! Chapman needs to get rid of him or stick him in a lab instead of teaching!
Hes a nice guy. go to class listen to his lectures. tests are 30 questions multiple choice and T/F. i bombed a test and he let me retake it. the final was open note too! one project. Hes from china and is very knowledgeable. cool guy
I had professor Jia for two classes last semester. He is one of the most compassionate teachers i have ever met. Many people dislike professor Jia because of his high expectations. However, if you are truley interested in obtaining a greater understanding of the subject matter, you will find that he is one of the best teachers Chapman has to offer.
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I cannot understand what he is saying, and the class should be called ASIAN communication not intercultural communication. He is entirely biased and has not taught anything about communication throughout the world
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I cannot understand what he is saying, and the class should be called ASIAN communication not intercultural communication. He is entirely biased and has not taught anything about communication throughout the world
Literally the worst professor I have ever come across. TERRIBLE. Stay away from him at all costs. If by some miracle you can A) stay awake in his class B) Understand what he is saying and C) relate EVERYTHING to China, then you may be OK. But if not, do not take his class.
This is one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The fact that this professor is tenured is shocking. The material is dry on it's own and he makes it equivalent to the Sahara in summer. He is IMPOSSIBLE to communicate with (ironic) and unless you're obsessed with China, you'll learn very little. Don't waste your time or your money.
One of the worst teachers I have ever seen. I cannot believe this guy is on tenure. He does NOT speak english and his intercultural class is a joke. He talks about how great Asia is and compares it to the current state of the US pointing out the recession and war. This teacher is the WORST.
Great Teacher! If you pay attention and do the work you will get a great grade. Always available for extra help!
If you are willing to do work and try in a class, take Intercultural with Jia! He's horribly misunderstood. One of the nicest and most caring people at Chapman. Wll always help you if you are struggling and truly cares about his students learning. If you get perfect attendance he gives you an extra 5% on your total grade at the end too. GO JIA!!!
Jia's thesis course is definitely more work than others in the com department. That being said, at the end of the semester you have a fantastic research paper that can be used to help you get a job or build on with a masters degree. Jia also helps you get published if you are interested. You get what you put into the course.
Really nice guy, really tries to help his students. He's a little dry, but if you want to get 3 easy credits, definitely take Jias class
Great great teacher. He is so nice and so misunderstood. As long as you pay attention, he will give you a good grade. He really cares about his students
Great Teacher! Always available for extra help. Very smart man, learned a lot from this class!
Has spent the entire first hour talking about the origin of his last name. If this is any indication as to how the rest of the semester is going to be I can tell we are not learning a single thing.
He's not as horrible as most people say he is. Sure, he's not the most entertaining professor, but he makes sure you understand what's going on. The class is relatively easy, as long as you do the work and pay attention. Easiest 3 credits I've gotten.
Jia is subjective with your grades and doesn't fully grade your assignments based on it's quality. IF he likes you (rare) you will do well, if not, he will most possibly give you a terrible grade. Jia is not a good professor. Do NOT TAKE HIM.
People said that I should not take him, however I learned so much and thought he was a very smart man.... class can be boring at times but its worth it
when he takes points off it's usually .25 with the whole assignment being 10 points. Confusing about what exactly he expects since he says one thing and expects more even though never stated. nice, intelligent guy. Consultant report is the only hard thing.start before finals week and you'll be fine. only used book for student teaching chapter.
If you go to class and listen to what he says you will get a good grade, and enjoy the class. He marks off very small like .25.. do your work and pay attention and you will get a good grade. Really enjoyed taking his class.
He tells you to read the textbook but marks you off for putting what the book said on quizzes, because the book is wrong and he's right apparently. Takes himself way too seriously and tries to make the class harder than it needs to be.
Wonderful professor. Very well educated and knowledgable. He is one of the most caring and disciplined professors in communications. Highly recommend him if you want to open your mind to new perspectives and take on a moderately challenging course. A true scholar.
He's a very knowledgeable guy, lectures aren't the most exciting but his PPT's are straightforward and his requirements are clear. There's no reason you shouldn't do well as long as you show up for lectures and study what he tells you to study! One of my favorite professors so far!
Fabulous professor! One of the most intelligent communication professors at Chapman. I had the highest respect in what he tried to teach us. One of the most interesting and valuable classes I have taken so far at Chapman. He is not as terrible as students say he is. Take him when you have the chance!
SO BAD. I was not absent once during all of interterm and he marked me down as absent twice, giving my grade a 10% reduction. If you take this class, make sure that you know he's marking you there.
Quite literally the WORST professor I have ever had.His class is extremely boring and he makes no effort into make it interesting. Very few lectures he did were not helpful. Very vague on assignments but with high expectations on certain standards and formatting, and then grading harshly. UGH I will never get over how much I hated this class.
Excellent professor. Very smart and articulate. He's timely in his correspondences and offers help when you ask for it. Anyone can earn a good grade if they pay attention, attend office hours, and prepare for class. His class is very doable and there is a lot to learn from him. The negative rumors are only true if you do not do the work.
I couldn't understand him at all. His grading methods were impossible to follow, and he never posted grades so nobody knew how well they were doing in the class. When people asked questions in class, he would repeat himself over and over again without offering a different explanation. He's nice, but frustrating.
Worst professor I've had at Chapman. So unclear. Every day due dates change, assignment criteria change, I met with him to clarify due dates and he said "I don't really enforce due dates, just do things in the right order and turn the final product in on time" he then proceeded to give me half credit on every assignment i turned in for lateness.
This professor is extremely unclear about what he wants from his students and will not help you no matter how many times you approach him. I took this class over interterm, which was hell! The workload is ridiculous and the class is incredibly boring. He is intelligent, but also self-centered and can't teach what he knows. Don't take him, trust me.
Professor Jia knows his material, unfortunately this doesn't translate to class lectures. His assignments are vague, and overall it's extremely difficult to understand what he expects from projects and assignments.
For a communication professor, it's ironic that he's an ineffective communicator. Although the class material was somewhat interesting, the lectures were dry. Shame, because he is smart. The biggest issue: he is very unclear about expectations and "assumes" everyone knows what to do. Even asking him questions didn't result in a clear answers :(
Was the worst teacher I've ever had at Chapman. Extremely boring and changes things last minute. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS TEACHER!!!
Worst class I've taken at Chapman thus far. Biggest waste of my time. He assumes all students know what's going on in the class even though he hasn't explicitly explained anything. Doesn't like answering questions if he's answered it more than once to someone else. Lectures are so boring. Take home tests were ridiculously hard. DONT TAKE
I had him for COM 411 and COM 329 this past spring and he was great! He is a smart man and a very fair grader. You will learn so much in his classes. If you are struggling, he will help you. You must attend class, pay attention, participate, attend office hours, do the online discussions, work on a few group projects and you will receive an A!
HIS CLASS SUCKS!!!!! Do not take this class if not necessary! His lectures are long and so boring. Everyone walks out his class either seriously confused or questions his ability to teach at a college level. He doesn't even make sense half the time and you begin to wonder if he's actually speaking english at times...
Dr. Jia is intelligent, not always clear, but if you ask for help he is always there. He really wants you to learn and make use of the things you are learning. Students give him way too much of a hard time when it might just be that they were the ones not paying attention. The horrific stories students keep circulating are grossly exaggerated.
Great professor, learned a lot, and one of the best communication professors. Students are too dim to realize that he knows what he's teaching until they learn to listen.
I LOVE THIS GUY!!!
Terrible professor! I had no other choice but to take his class and I regret it. I have learned nothing. It is his way or the highway and his way happens to be extremely confusing. Most of the time he doesn't answer students questions and they just give up because they aren't getting an answer from him. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I can tell that he is very intelligent, but his directions aren't very clear when it comes to projects. Lectures are very long and boring, accompanied by powerpoint slides that are extremely text-heavy and confusing. The textbook was my most expensive by far and you're expected to read it all. He is available outside of class to help though
Worst professor I've ever had. So unclear, doesn't speak english well, completely horrible teacher. Doesn't answer questions, pointless assignments. I learned absolutely nothing. Put in so much work. He uses his own textbook and there are so many errors in it. Such unclear grading criteria too - same multiple choice answers but different grades.
Do not take this professor. He doesn't explain anything well at all and you don't know what he's talking about 90% of the time. HIs lectures are very dry and his slides are text heavy. He helped make the textbook and its full of mistakes. Take the courses he teaches with a different professor.
Professor Jia was one of the worst professors I have experienced during my time at Chapman. He doesn't tell you what grade you have until the very end and he gives a lot of unnecessary group projects (20 person group projects) He makes attendance mandatory but the whole time is talking about random stuff. The layout of his tests is horrible
Jia is very educated and learned, but sucks as a teacher. His class is either him giving long, boring lectures, or groups presenting on chapters of the book (that he wrote). You're graded by attendance, 2 group projects, take home midterm, and take home final. However, he doesn't post grades until after semester is over. It helps is he likes you too
Awful at lectures. Thick accent and hard to understand. Participate and you'll do fine, but you'll constantly be stressed out about your grade because you have no idea what's going on...
EVERYTHING HE SAYS IS CONFUSING. HE DOESN'T TEACH. HE WANTS YOU TO LEARN FROM A TEXTBOOK HE WROTE. Ridiculous. LITERALLY TAKE ANY OTHER TEACHER FOR YOUR SAKE
He is a really sweet teacher and wants to help you learn just isn't the best teacher. He gets a bad reputation but if you just do the assignments you'll be fine.
I've never had a teacher bad enough to write a review about here until I had Professor Jia. He is a horrible teacher. There are no instructions for any assignments, no grades until the semester is over, he practically makes the class teach each other, and the few lectures he does do are completely irrelevant. Save yourself and don't take his class.
He's very nice, but his expectations/instructions are really unclear. For being a COM professor, he's not great at communicating. Lectures a lot. For Fall 2021, he is giving us our final late and had to ask our class when the final was. A bit sad that a professor doesn't even know when our final is.
The negative reviews left for Professor Jia are inaccurate. I was hesitant to take his class after looking at his ratings, but Professor Jia is genuinely one of my favorite professors in the department. He cares about his students and is passionate about what he teaches. He is intellectual and kind. I would take any of his classes without a doubt!
I. Wish. I. Dropped. I took this class to fulfill a GE requirement and I hate it. I don't know my grade because he doesn't input them. His lectures are stupid and barely cover what is on the midterm. He expects us to teach ourselves through group projects covering his textbook. Save yourself don't take a class with him.
Professor Jia's class was a mixed bag. His lectures can be hard to follow, but engaging with the material through group projects and the textbook helped me learn. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for review and study prep. Overall, a challenging but manageable course.
