I would take a course on the most boring literature of all time if Wes taught it
It's the only class where the material and the' view' are equally interesting ;)
Super nice guy, amiable, could go into more depth in the lectures though
So easy-going and totally understands what it's like to be a student!
Super nice guy, but could he read what he puts on the syllabus first?
sweet hottie who says bless you whenever anyone sneezes.and the class 200+ ppl
I want to marry Wes. And have his baby.

Great Professor and friendly to students!
Wes is the man of my dreams - love the class and him too!
my god. no, i mean, he IS my GOD. *sigh* anything for wes.
i love wes. period.
Wes is the man. So groovy, so Wes.
He made Shakespeare so interesting and is so funny we would be laughing out loud
i love wes. enough said!
amazing prof, so kind, made you feel like an individual in such a huge lecutre hall, definitely my fav class of the year

Really makes comming to class a pleasure
Awesome!
Awesome!
Wes is one of my fav profs! He's super nice and so much fun! He really makes Shakespeare interesting and has a super-awesome attitude! If you have the chance, definately take a class with him!
Wes makes you love English!
Wes is terrific. Advice: take him as your TA for the class.
Wes rules! Advice: You must go to the lectures--he basically gives you all the info: you just have to listen. Don't go to him for a TA-- you get a different perspective (better broader answers)--READ THE PLAYS
Awesome awesome prof. One of the best I've had in my 4 years here. Engaging, funny, relates to the students. Open to discussions and very approachable. Made me appreciate Shakespeare! Fun class. Always looked forward to it.
My favourite professor! Fun and funny. Interesting and interested in his subject. I learned so much, and even loved going to class.
the Best professor ever. his lectures are so interesting you forget to take notes :)
lovely lovely man.
This teacher made me like Shakespeare! He rocks. He is so clear in his teachings that it's so fun and easy to follow and actually understand. He's really laid back and if you actually do all the readings, there's no way you can't get a good grade!!
Great claa and Prof! Lectures are always enjoyable and engaging and he makes Shakespeare new not stagnant like certain teachers risk doing sometimes with the way the present the material. One of the TA's was good the other comes off as unapproachable
Very engaging, and superficial - which is why his ratings are no doubt so high. That and he's an easy grader - scandalously so.
re: previous comments. I think it's pathetic that a professor would appropriate a student venue for the sake of taking a stab at another professor. Grow the **** up.
Doesn't this prof., have anything to do other than to monitor your own site? WRITE A BOOK!
Nice guy, too friendly with the students, pretty lightweight course, but then again I'm not here to be told how brilliant I am all the time.
Phenomenal professor. Always has a unique aspect to add to Shakespeare. Witty, approachable, kind, and a fair marker. My absolute favourite class at McGill.
The course was ok, but only that, overall, I was a bit disappointed (not a course for the history books).
sure wes is nice, but come on! his lectures are totally unplanned and unstructured. it's impossible to take notes on a lecture that he seems to be making up on the spot. he lacks insight and original ideas, and relies way too much on his "nice guy" reputation to get out of actually planning lectures
Love him. Maybe Shakespeare was a little easy, but his Renaissance Literature: 1590s was a nice challenge. He is a good man and great prof.
Hate him. His classes are not structured and the only thing you are tested on is your ability to memorize quotes and tie them to themes one could find on Sparknotes.com. Maybe he's better in higher-level classes, but in this case it is just plain bad.NOT HOT at all unless you like the long grey hair
amazing class, great plays, interesting lectures, nice guy, helps you, easy class.
shakespeare for Dummies.
I love Shakespeare - I hate this class. It is not what I expected at all. Whoever said it was easy - was LYING! Not only that, it's just not interesting. No play is gone in depth - about 3 classes are devoted per play. It's boring, hard and definately NOT as easy A!
I don't understand how anyone could hate him. Maybe things have gone downhill, but when I took his class, I loved it.
He's a good teacher and very nice. The 1590's course was pretty interesting. But, come on...I can't be the only one who thinks he's super hot! He's so cute.
Wes is great!
Good guy, seriously needs to learn how to teach.Basically stands in front of the class, reads his notes (which are far from clear)and goes from one idea to another.I love Shakespeare and have studied his plays many times before but I absolutely hate this class and especially the TA.Not easy at all.
This is one of the best classes I've ever taken . Wes is great! If you keep up with the plays and go to class, there is no reason why you should not do well.
I really liked him. He's not the most focused teacher in the world, but then he's just too nice to tell students not to go off on personal topics. His comments on essays were very helpful, and he was understanding when asked for extensions. I'd certainly recommend this class to anyone.
Makes this class****ty. He just stands there and reads off his notes, but it sounds like he's reading an essay or something. The conferences are useless (maybe I got stuck with a bum TA?) and sparknotes saved my ass. NOT an easy class to take at all.
Nice nice nice but he seems stressed.
Loved the class.
i love wes! the moves pretty quickly but hey, it's an intro course. plus, he makes lots of cute pop culture references in his lectures and is a really likeable prof. this is the only class i never skipped throughout the course of my first semester.
Great prof, fun course...although they go through the material with quickly. Tests are fair, although long, and the grading is fair too. It's a good course, take it!

Funny and interesting. I didn't do well in the course, but loved it anyways. Bit of a hard marker, though.
Great course to take! I'd recommend it to anyone. The exams were a little long, but It was worth it. Good for science majors looking for an interesting class to take. Prof. Folkerth is fun to listen to and he cares about his students. The TA's were really good as well!
A gut (meaning too easy) course. He's nice, but a lightweight.
BEST prof ever....SO interesting. Makes Shakespeare the most interesting subject. Loved this prof. and would take hima again in an instant.
He's nice, understanding, chillaxed, funny and cool. His teaching style is casual and unconventional, but nonetheless not particularly my cup of tea. I find myself feeling like I haven't learned very much after every class. Oftentimes, his style leaves me in an intellectually unproductive stupor. Other than that though, good prof.
Wes is wonderful! His lectures are very straightforward and engaging, and his personality enhances class even more. He's ALWAYS willing to help students out and answers e-mail asap. He's not an easy marker, you do have to work, but it's not impossibly hard either. Wasn't crazy about the film selection, but the class itself was fabulous!
He is great, his lectures are clear and very engaging. Also he is always available if you need help or anything.
Wes is fantastic. He will show you a new side of early modern studies and encourage engaging debates. Also, the seminar format means you will be learning with him rather than from him.
extremely engaging, really knows what he's talking about, offers interesting information, very good delivery
This guy will make you LOVE Shakespeare. I love you WES...you're the best! (Hey that rhymes...)
I am not studying English as a major or minor, but jumped into this class anyways...and it was worth it. One of the best profs I've had yet. He's always in a good mood and makes the material friendly to everyone. Just make sure to go to the classes to understand everything.
let me echo the love!!! Needed his help with something as Grad Chair. What a great guy!!! Kind, approchable, available, helpful, clear. Doesn't seem to consider Grad students the enemy. This is new!!!!! Prof. Folkerth is a really sweet guy :)
This class rekindled my love for studying English literature.
The best English professor I've encountered at McGill. He stimulates enthralling class discussions, he's open to new ideas and interpretations, his feedback on essays is thorough and helpful while never condescending or snide. He gave me fresh insight and perspective on Shakespeare plays I'd read douzens of times before. A true gem.
This class was amazing purely because of the Prof. He was hilarious, incredibly insightful and beyond intelligent. He made every class fun and made me love Shakespeare even more. Fantastic class.
He gives extremely boring lectures and is a tough marker.
Theodore Wes Folkerth is the worst teacher ever. He seems to be completely incompetent in English.
Really interesting lectures. Funny and will make you think. Prepares you well for the final exam, and is a fair (almost too easy) marker. Take him!
GREAT! Take his course! He is the best Shakespeare prof at McGill, he is very supportive of his students and he is extremely approchable. Do it, do it, do it!
Wes is unbelievable- he's genuinely kind and understanding. Rather than having a teaching philosophy of rigid rules and strict discipline, he just speaks about literature as something he loves and knows well, making his lectures wonderful. When I needed an extension, I asked for a day, and he emailed me back kindly offering a week. He's a saint.
I wasn't the biggest fan of the class structure and the speed that we moved through long works, but I definitely liked Wes as a Prof. He's light-hearted, knowledgable, and often funny in his lectures. It's something to look forward to when he reads aloud from the textbook, he can nail most dialects.
Professor Folkerth is a terrific professor. His lectures were very entertaining. I really enjoyed his sense of humour, and laid-back West-Coast attitude. Oh, and the man is FINE! He looks like an older version of actor William McNamara. Great job, he also looks a little like Richard Gere!!!
Not only is Wes passionate about the subject that he teaches, but he makes it easy to follow along in his lectures. Class is fun to attend because of his great sense of humour. Additionally, he gives clues for the final essay questions for exams making a good mark possible. He made me remember my love for english literature after ENGL 203.
Shakespeare on film: great class! Made a film instead of writing a 10 page paper!
Excellent lecturer! It was his first time teaching the Shakespeare class and it was great. 11 plays and a long poem in one semester is A LOT, but overall Wes is a great prof. Knows what he is talking about, entertains the class and is extremely clear with material and expectations.
Great guy, you can tell that he really enjoys the Renaissance and Elizabethan period. He is also quite funny, which makes for interesting lectures. I'd take his class again.
Very nice professor, though lectures could be boring. Did not need to buy all the books (only the poetry and short story ones..)
Wes is an awesome prof! I found his lectures super interesting and sometimes really funny as well. Definitely the prof you want to take Shakespeare with!
Professor Wes Folkerth is the reason I continued to take English at McGill. His lectures are engaging and quirky and he loves to see his passion for literature and drama reflected through his students. Very approachable and reasonable grading-wise. Reading load is bit heavy with almost a play a week, but it's worth it!
Wes is really nice, his lectures are engaging and he truly has a passion for what he teaches (Shakespeare). LOVED when he read in different British accents. So cute and actually a great guy
A great human being! Really considerate in the way he gives information and how it might benefit students. Lots of readings, but understands that it is a lot.
His lectures are completely unstructured and disorganized. It makes it almost impossible to take notes during lecture, because he goes from one idea to the next with no clear theme. He writes a lot of words on the board that are not at all relevant for exams. Impossible to learn how to study for his exams. Tough grader.
I took English classes during CEGEP and really liked them, so I thought I'd do the same thing during my first semester at McGill and I don't regret it at all! Prof Wes' class is really interesting and a breath of fresh air from my 4 PSYC classes. He looks for pretty specific things during exams, but his lectures are really interesting and worth!
Wes is the best!! He's definitely passionate about Shakespeare and his class is super engaging. This class is a lot of work but his exams are fair if you go to class and engage with all the plays
If you ever get a chance to take a class with Folkerth, DO IT!!! His kind, friendly, and funny personality makes any subject matter fun to learn about. He structured the syllabus really well, making sure that we alternated the types of ideas we talked about, and made class a great time. Sometimes late on returning work but is flexible w deadlines
A fantastic professor! Loved each and every one of his lectures. The class format, while hard to cover a play every two weeks, was organized and easy to follow. Straightforward and super inspiring!
Professor Folkerth is a fantastic teacher, and more important, an all round great guy. It being a Shakespeare course, content can sometimes be dry and repetitive, but Wes found ways around that and engaged the class with jokes and interesting analysis. One of the kindest professors Ive had at McGill and wouldnt hesitate to call him my favourite!
I love this man. Super enthusiastic about the subject matter (and makes lectures interesting because of it). Not a harsh grader and is lenient with late policies. There is a lot of reading for this class (so only do it if you like renaissance plays!) but its mostly interesting. Definitely a prof worth taking a class with!
Wes was a good professor. I took ENGL 200 with him and the class wasn't too bad. It was comparable to an advanced high school English course (AP or IB English literature). There's a lot of reading and the marking is somewhat ambiguous but I think it's possible to do well. Watch his lectures for key themes/ideas; they're helpful for essays, etc.
Wes is great. His lectures are so interesting and funny and it's clear to see why he's raved about by so many students. He's super understanding of personal pressures and is pretty flexible with deadlines if you have any issues. Great guy and great class with super interesting films.
I LOVE HIMMM. He truly is the best. So kind and caring. You can see that he is really passionate about the subject which i think is what makes his lectures very enjoyable, if you like the subject too of course. lots and lots of reading but do it because its so worth it. He made me enjoy school honestly
Prof. Folkerth's a good prof and a kind man. He delivers entertaining lectures, for the most part. I feel that his grading is fair, though he doesn't give any comments on papers, so it's hard to tell whether his grading really is fair or not.
Classes were stuffed with really interesting material and were intellectually stimulating. Also very considerate to those of us who could not attend in-person.
Professor Folkerth is a good lecturer, he is very knowledgeable in his domain. However, it seems like he treats this level 200 class as a level 300 or 400. The amount of work is exceptional for a level 200, and the assignments are hefty. He gives good feedback, and he grades reasonably. Cool class, I recommend.
One of the nicest profs I've had. Very understanding and accommodating. Passionate about the content, although I sometimes wished we'd gone more in depth on a few of the texts. He does expect long essays for a 200 level class.
Such an amazing prof! he is hilarious and extremely passionate about the subject matter. he is a bit timid at times, but he definitely makes an effort to be engaging. midterm was tough (esp those passage ID's). listen in class & take thorough notes.
Wes Folkerth is a super sweet guy, but I did not enjoy this class. The lectures were boring and semi-disorganized, and the exams were unnecessarily difficult for a survey-level class. Take detailed notes and memorize the passages mentioned in lecture, you will be tested on them later. He's passionate, I just wish the lectures were more interesting!
Fantastic. Very accommodating.
Very engaging prof, who makes Shakespeare's plays accessible. The tests are pretty tough, and good knowledge of the plays is necessary. But he does not want to trick students and there are no surprises if you attended class.
Lots of reading but super sweet, knowledgeable, and cool guy :)
Seems like a really sweet guy. He will remember your name. Lectures are a little disorganized and most of the exam material comes from them. Go to class to do well. I was a little bored, but renaissance lit isn't my favorite. You can tell Prof Folkerth loves it. Readings are dense but on the shorter side. I wish I had gone to more office hours.
Wes is genuinely an amazing professor. His lectures are engaging, passionate, and presented in a way that makes you excited to discuss the studied material in conference. The only potential downside for some students in this course is that all course materials are discussed in lectures, so there are no slides available on MyCourses.
Prof. Folkerth is passionate and knowledgeable. His lectures are disorganized, but his enthusiasm keeps you engaged. He's a really cool dude as well: caring, accommodating, with an endearing dad energy. Readings are dense and exams aren't super easy, but if you SHOW UP TO CLASS and are willing to put in a little work, you'll do well.
