Cumulative exams and final, had to study a LOT and other folks in class didnt do so hot. Prepare to study and come to class. He loves WOW and is a fun person but as a teacher is kinda hard
Young and inexperienced with teaching, but probably learning his way with each new quarter. He's definitely entertaining! Hard material to learn on your own, so attending class is highly recommended. He will do his best to explain everything to you until you get it.
His tests were much harder than they needed to be. He tried to trick you with questions which I did not like but I understand why he did it. He was fun but the returned quizzes and exams and labs always smelled like smoke. He is very helpful though if you have a question.
I took general chemistry 161 with this teacher. He is young 27 and wears a world of warcraft shirt every day. You will learn a lot in his class but you will fail it because the exams are very difficult and labs are very time consuming.
Attendance alone is not enough to keep up w/ this class. TAKE INITIATIVE. Teacher expects you to do a lot of homework (ungraded) without you giving a lot of incentive. Concise, detailed writing on labs is important. Not good about returning graded work back to students in a timely fashion. Friendly guy, you will suffer if you slack off though.
Class was manageable. Wes is a fun guy and his lectures are pretty clear. Take good notes, and do the HW problems that he recommends(for practice if u need it). Also be sure to complete all of the labs and never show up late to a lab. Exams were a little challenging but manageable if u dont fall behind. getting an A is far from impossible.
Lectures weren't boring & goes over things pretty clear. Ask questions if unclear & he will be more than happy to go over them. Homework is not mandatory, but highly recommended to pass the class. His multiple choice is tricky & application problems require an understanding of all concepts put together. Exam + lab based grade.
While Wes is a great guy, and a fun teacher, his obsession with tricking people is a bit much. Nearly every question on any given test is a trick question, and tends to be ambiguous on what he is asking. He is not very forgiving in grading, and uses trick questions to give his students a C grade, rather than attempt at using a grade curve
Wes was not a helpful teacher at all- he was very rude and I didn't enjoy his class at all. He didn't have interesting lectures. You could read your textbook and save yourself the time of taking up space in his lecture since all of his notes come directly from the textbook (word for word).
Wes is a good teacher if you come to learn. If you have no interest in the lectures and leave class on a regular basis he will not be the nicest person. He is very strict with his labs and takes points away quickly. Very helpful and approachable. Tests are hard b/c he grades based on if you know the concepts. Overall a good teacher and class.
The one thing which really bothered me is that Wes will take lab points away from everyone if one student does something stupid (like pouring reagent back into the bottle). This is irrating because in lab I'm usually trying to concentrate on my own experiment rather than seeing that my classmates don't mess something up. other than that he was ok.
Horrible teacher. Will eat in class and talk with his mouth full. Does not really help you or explain material well. He is oblivious that half the class is failing b/c of his lack of teaching skills. He will also be distracted by questions from students that don't pertain to the lesson. Save yourself from the stress and take a different teacher.
Wes is the worst teacher I have ever had. Everyone in the class did horrible in exams but he doesn't feel that it reflects on his teaching habits at all when 72% of students fail exams. If you plan on taking this course from him be prepared to have to use the textbook to teah yourself the material becuase he doesn't explain things well at all.
Wes is a pretty decent teacher. He's always open for questions when he's giving lectures, so make sure to ask if something is confusing you. He is a little stingy on points (for example, tries to trick you on tests) but it's just because he wants you to get the material. He definitely prepares you for Chem 161, which is the point of this class.
This teacher is smart and good at chemistry, but not very helpfull and overall a bad teacher. His tests are very tricky with limited amount of time for the amount of work. Sometimes he will give quizzes and labs without going over the subject matter. I would not take another class from this professor.
Wes has been a great teacher. People on here give him a hard time for being tough. He goes over the information very well and continuously asks if anyone has questions. If you don't understand something, just ask! If you study the lectures and go over the optional homework you will do fine in his class. I am excited to take him again next quarter!
I have taken Wes' class twice now. 140 and 161. I have personally enjoyed his class but I know alot of students have struggled. He is hard but he is fair and strait foward. If you have a hard time following directions then this may not be the best class for you. But if you put the time in and actually study hard then youll do good.
Wes has to be one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He not only is highly inappropriate, but he also made a significant amount of people cry and/or drop out because of his rude and bully-like behavior. You do not need to go to class because he practically teaches straight off of a P.P. slide. I would not recommend him...
He is arrogant and belittling. He refuses to believe he might be the problem if students are struggling. His multiple choice questions are tricky, and he will dock points for the most random, nit-picky things. I will not take a class from him!
He is strict, but fair, like others have said. I showed up 11 minutes late for our first lab and was kicked out. Trick questions on quizzes and tests. He teaches exactly what you need to know though and made it very easy for me to understand.I missed the final but he let me take it at the beginning of the next quarter.Overall he is a cool funny guy
Wes is a good teacher, he always tries to be fair but also is very strict. During lectures he'll always try to make sure everyone understands so don't be afraid to ask questions! His exams and quizes are tough so you have to be well prepared. Overall he's a great teacher, one of the best ones I've had.
Really funny guy but you have to attend class EVERYDAY in order to get a decent grade. Very picky grade and will dock you points for little things like 5 points off a 15 point lab just for sig figs, overall great and clear teacher. Willing to spend time out of class to help students. Really tries to help people succeed. Study hard.
Wes is a great teacher. I had him For 161 in the Winter. He was extremely helpful and clear in his explanations. He was extremely fair and the tests were pretty easy. I have seen him take off points on labs for sig figs and lack of safety in the lab section of notebook. There are also time limits on tests. He is an excellent Teacher though!
Wes is very clear at what he expects. But he wasn't a very genuine professor. Sometimes I felt like I was being tricked. He offered help but I felt like he wasn't very excited about teaching it. I gave up at the end of the quarter because of his negativity. Don't take this class if you usually need/like help from the professor sometimes.
Wes can be a good teacher and is clear about expectations. Quizzes are every day so if you know all of the material very well you can do just fine but unless you know it all you will be struggling. Many of the students did. A major point is that tests are timed so if you are a slow worker you should not take this class.
Wes was a pretty chill dude, straight out of neckbeard convention. He wore a different World of Warcraft shirt everyday, camo cargo pants, combat boots, and drove a motorcycle. Lol. He was a solid teacher and very clear with expectations, his course felt difficult at times but if you actually do the homework he assigns you'll do great.
Wes is an awesome teacher who keeps lectures interesting. Be warned that you DO have to keep on top of your work and study hard to do well, don't be afraid to ask questions if you're the slightest bit unsure of anything!
He keeps things fun with jokes, videos, and cartoons. He does well in lecture. My issue, and most other peoples' as well, is his quizzes and tests are ridiculous. You have to put way more effort into his classes to get by which is frustrating as hell. Expect to get stressed out unless you are amazing at this stuff.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Love chemistry, not after having him. Absolutely NOT enough time on the exams/quizzes, only a FEW students ever finish on time. Refuses to post grades on the colleges grade checking website because hes "Not allowed to". Not true. Never know what your grade is unless you go to his all around inconvenient office hours.
I do not recommend this professor. His lectures are explained well, but his exams/quizzes are extremely difficult to complete on time. Also, his grading is very harsh. (For ex. one could be docked a letter grade on an assignment for a few minor errors, when no rubric was given). Lastly, he prides himself in the fact that he's failed a whole class.
Wes surely knows his chemistry. His lectures are pretty entertaining. His exams are relatively easy, but his quizzes are way too hard. He's not flexible with his office hours, and he doesn't seem eager to help his students. Prepare for plenty of studying if you're taking his class.
His lectures were fun & understandable but quizzes & exams are what get you. There's not enough time to finish & grading is very harsh. Office hours are very minimal & thats the only way to find out your grade. If your taking his class be prepared to put in at least a couple hours each day studying just to get by.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. Tries to trick students on tests, prides himself on the fact he fails students. Always says " you can take it again!" Do not take his classes. if you are reading this up yours!
I like Wes as a person, not very much as an instructor. His quizzes and exams are timed and makes sure it's long enough so you don't go back to check your work. However, he's very reasonable with lab reports and very lenient with HW assignments.
He answers e mails 247 whenever you have a question, and is always willing to answer questions or go over tough subjects with you. The exams aren't easy, but doable. Easy grader for labs, and not much homework. He doesn't force attendance, but I recommend it.
He uses PowerPoint slides that are available to his students which is helpful. However, he goes through lectures really fast and if you ask questions, he'll make you feel stupid. Unfortunately he doesn't update grades on Canvas and good luck trying to find him during his office hours. It is possible to get a negative score on an assignment of his.
Lectures were exciting, quizzes were fair. When it came down to his exams, he really tested your knowledge of the concepts and the extent of your studying. Somewhat harder than examples given in class, so prepare for them. Also he did several "alternate universe" questions which were very hard. Put the work in and you'll enjoy the class!
I have never struggled so much in a class before, this said, I absolutely loved him. I learned the most from him then I did in 161 or 163. He is hilarious and makes every lecture exciting. Exams are very very tough but he curves them as well as the entire class at the end of the quarter. If you want to learn, take him!
I have over 90 credits and Wes was, by far, my favorite teacher! He actually explains the text during lecture instead of just summarizing it. I would email him at 1 am with a question and he would get back to me in less then an hour most of the time with very clear answers. Also gives lots of ways to get points and lets you redo 1 exam.
Gives pretty good lectures and answers any questions you have. Not a very tough grader when it comes to labs, which is very welcome. Grades a little tougher on tests, so make sure to study hard for those.
Wes is a great guy and is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He definitely knows his stuff and will try to clarify something if anyone is stuck. The labs are pretty easy . This was one of the more challenging classes I have taken. The tests are very difficult and require you to have a complete understanding of the material.
Wes is by far my favorite chemistry teacher I have taken. Not only are his lectures entertaining, I actually learned a lot from this class. Be aware, his exams are pretty tough and he does like to put trick questions, but if you work hard you will succeed. Great professor.
He was a funny guy, he made slice shows for every chapter. He make the lecture clear. Quiz every week and 5-4 tests per quarter. It's not hard if you knew the material.
He does NOT try to trick students on tests, but some people might feel that way if they didn't practice the material. Get the textbook recommended by the professor. Do the practice problems. This is not a "show up and learn" kind of class, you have to do as much work outside of the class as you can. Grading criteria not super clear, but grades fair
Wonderful teacher, especially if you ask for help. Online homework program is $30. Writes his own quizzes that are very unique. Do the problems in the text assigned at the end of each section as well as the online homework before quiz/tests and you'll be in great shape.
He had a sense of humor and stood over my shoulder until I figured out his instructions. He was a good chemistry teacher.
Wes has a casual teaching approach but does a good job of conveying the information. If you do all the HW, and the readings from the textbook, and edit the labs it should be an easy A. The strangest thing was that he does not post grades online, or disclose them by email. The reason is to make sure that you come and talk to him though.
I had a lot of fun in Wes's class and got a good understanding of the material.
if you do the work and pay attention to what he is teaching youre good. dont miss labs and come prepared for them. i loved his class and would take it again if i could.
This class is very difficult and the grading at times will not feel fair. Wes will try and make jokes but by the 8th week they feel like you're being antagonized by your torturer. Expect to bomb the quizzes, everyone does--that doesn't mean you shouldn't try but don't beat yourself up too much. Study a lot and stay on your toes, he will trick you.
This class is almost difficult and there is no extra practice and example in his class. He just works on textbook examples. But the exams and quizzes are harder. you should Study a lot and stay on your toes however he will trick you by the unexpected questions. he is not friendly as he seems and makes you feel stupid when you ask a question.
Wes is awesome! His lectures are great and he explains the material VERY well. He is clear about grading criteria and what is going to be on his exams. This class requires a lot of time and effort, but I enjoyed it.
He is a harsh grader and rarely gives specific justification as to why he marked you down. Quizzes are the hardest part of the class. He quizzes on things he mentions in lectures or expects you to be able to assume but doesn't so much quiz on things that are in his power points. His lectures are him reading his slides and making side comments.
Super funny guy and relatable, not too erudite but doesn't treat you like a child.
Wes is an entertaining teacher - he's funny and nerdy in a good way. His lectures are fun and educational. However, he can make students feel stupid for asking questions. His quizzes have questions that seem like tricks and seem to be contextual. This class is fast-paced and study groups are essential to getting clarification.
He is funny and mean at the same time! His quizzes and exams are really hard more than you think! If you want to get a bad grade just take his class, enjoy.
He makes the class really hard, and he makes the students stupid when they ask him! I think the teacher should help the students, but I didn't see any help from him!
He doesn't show any help for the students and in any time if there's a student ask him, he will make that student is a stupid! I can not really understand him! for real, If you want a bad grade, take his class!
If you wanna take a bad grade in Chem, just take his class! I hope that was so helpful! Thank you :)
Wes is a super tough grader. It is almost impossible to get A in his class. lab reports are fine, but quizzes are too hard. I would NOT take his class again.
I think some of the people that reviewed him are bitter they didnt pass. He is hilarious and actually teaches! He is helpful and gives you the time and answers you need. He will give extra help. Im still in the class, so we will see what grade I end up with, but after taking chemistry previously with someone else, Im so much more confident!
Please do yourself a favor and save money. He constantly goes on about his bad hearing because he rides a Harley. Takes up class time about video game characters and how great of a student he was. His quizzes are incredibly hard. Hell give you 1/10 points for being one sig fig off or half points for not having units. He does NOT care if you pass.
He doesn't care about your progress. You have to fight for your grade to pass this class.
GO TO CLASS. Also study!!! Use the tutoring hall they are super helpful. As for the teacher dont suggest he is in the wrong, he doesnt take it well. When it comes to material he could have covered a few more things in detail. Also your final is a standardized test it isnt created by him or the school its made by a company called ACS.
Wes is awesome. There were lots of times we were given problems in class and then could work through them and get his feedback. I worked harder for this C than any of my As and Bs but I made it! This was my third time taking it, and I really responded well to his methods. You will have to work hard, but his sense of humor lightens the mood!
He's not bad, just a harder class. Labs/hw not too hard, a lot of online quizzes, final exam was a waste of time b/c Wes said he didn't know what was going to be on it, half the stuff on the exam wasn't even something I learned. Would not really recommend. I only passed b/c I had smart friends who helped me understand more than Wes himself.
His quizzes are so unforgiving. Many students taking his online class during the coronavirus have only been able to score up to 80% on quizzes despite even sharing answers via discord (we are allowed to). You won't be told which questions you get wrong so you are left confused on what you should improve on. Would not take this guy again.
Prof Wes fails to have any compassion for his students. He has decided to have the class take a mid-term, quiz, lab, and the final all in the last week of school. This is ridiculous and he has made it clear he does not care if his students pass or fail this course.
The worst teacher EVER
I think professor Wes, given the circumstances, and teaching online did a good job this spring quarter. I think his bad reviews on here are by students that clearly failed out of the class and are bitter. His live lectures were decent, but he made his standards clear from the beginning. Chemistry is a hard class, gotta put in the effort!
Granted we all were hit by COVID-19 and most teachers had to adjust to online teaching, but Wes really didn't even try to adapt. During finals week we had a lab, a midterm, a quiz and a final, all due before Friday. When we emailed him about this he goes "life is tough". Also doesn't show you what you did wrong on tests/quizzes so hard to improve.
not sure why there's so many low rates for Wes. Given COVID , he was pretty understanding and did his best to accommodate students. He was always willing to help out and answer questions via email, I felt like he really cared about how we did in the class! It was a bit stressful towards the end with a lab, quiz, exam and final due, but doable.
Fully online because of COVID. He does live YouTube lectures twice a week; you can ask questions live and rewatch the lectures (super helpful). He explains things in such simple terms that it feels easy when its not. He lets you take tests and exams twice. He is VERY CLEAR about what will be on the test; no tricks. Loved his teaching style.
I feel lucky to have taken CHEM131 with Wes and it was a fun class for someone who doesn't like chemistry. He's very personable and a good instructor. I did feel he was a tough grader on labs and his quizzes can be tricky but he gives 2 attempts and releases the answers. Also helps that exams are almost identical to quizzes - so study past quizzes!
Great teacher! His class was fun!! Quizzes were the same as exams. His is class easier than I thought. There are labs but those are easy, you can finish them in one day but he does give you a week and a half to work on it. Gives hard and soft deadline for quizzes and labs. Gives lots of extra credit on exams. Would recommend him 100%!
Wes Hillman is a character to say the least. He knows what he is talking about, however the way he teaches isn't very online friendly. He streamed his lectures on YouTube so participation was limited to the chat feature. His videos could be .5 hr long if cut down. Don't bother emailing him, he will just tell you to watch the videos for information.
He is funny, and he knows a lot. Just take quiz and exam with caution and you will be fine.
I had him a few semesters ago and it was really hard for me to understand what he was teaching. Some of the wordings for the tests were confusing as well and I didnt like how you couldnt see your grade at all until its posted on your transcript.
Update: I took Wes in 2017 and bombed, I hated every minute and almost quit STEM. I'm successful now, I aced a gen chem retake and was the best orgo student at my university in my year. Wes will make you feel stupid and make you want to quit, but he's not representative of STEM education, he's the only the worst of it. It gets better, I promise.
I liked how chilled back he was. I really appreciated how he gives second chances on his midterm. His labs are very time-consuming.
Wes is difficult to understand when he teaches. I think he forgets he is teaching NEW students & when you ask him a question, he makes you feel ignorant. To curse while teaching is unprofessional; it has no place in the "classroom". If you like to know what your grade is, don't expect it for a week or two. Read quizzes carefully.
I was not a fan of the YouTube livestreamed classes: they decreased engagement. The only way to ask questions was through the chat which had about a 30-60 second delay, and there was not a guarantee of your question being answered to satisfaction. Otherwise a decent teacher.
Professor Hillman is a great guy, but a tough teacher. I took his chem140 course and had to withdraw. He is one of the hardest chem teachers to take at EvCC. I retook the course with another teacher and got a B. Prof. Hillman uses YouTube and Discord to communicate with students, no required homework and exams are the only things graded.
Wes is a tough professor. He gives you plenty of time to study and work on chapters 1-5. Chapters 6-10 are slammed into a short amount of time. No time to study adequately. Only 5 labs but 25 lengthy questions each. 3 large exams, 2 within a week of each other. 2 takes on quizzes with the first attempt not being graded before the second.
good teacher but hard to follow because he doesn't explain in detail why and when you have to do certain steps. he's not bad just forgets we know nothing. lectures are 2 hours tues. and thurs. could definitely be shortened. asking questions is done best over email, he actually helps there. chem is hard but i do think he did the best he could.
Not worth taking chem with Wes. The quizzes matter so much and missing the small points with that and on the lab reports, is horrific, his feedback is terrible and the when asking question were told to reread the directions. No office hours just ping or DM on discord.
Prof. Wes is a funny and knowledgable dude but I don't like his teaching style. I missed an assignment and my grade plummeted. When I asked what to do he basically said that I wouldn't recover and that it was probably best to drop the class and take it another time. I would only recommend taking his class if you got an A- or higher in chem161&162
Wes is horrible, take his class if you wanna fail. He is a really hard grader and his instructions are always unclear.
I am having a wonderful time with Wes Hillman in my CHEM&140 class. The class is pretty hard, but I enjoy it, and as long as you actually do the work and pay attention, you can succeed easily.
Do NOT take this professor, tons of homework and the lectures are at a very fast pace, if you have a full time job this professor is not for you.
A bit unprofessional at times, but funny and interactive with students. Gives 8 points of extra credit on exams and a chance to retake one assignment for better grade, including exams. You have to put in effort to understand and learn concepts. Would recommend for those specifically interested in chem, not those going for a credit. Not an easy A.
Wes is a very down to Earth professor and likes to crack jokes often which makes the lectures very enjoyable. This class definitely does feel like a weed-out class however, his grading is quite strict and it's very hard to get full points on something even if you think you did it completely right. Study study study and you should be fine!
DO NOT take this professor. Harsh grader and lectures are hard to understand. Lots of reading material required even to understand the assignments. The exams are unrelated to the material provided in class, & any missed assignments plummet your grade. Overall don't recommend it. If there is any other professor available other than Wes, take them.
Wes is a hoot! He has a great way of explaining complex material. The class does not have any graded homework, which leads your grade to be determined based on very few points. The quizes and exams mirror the material covered and he offers a one-time retake on whatever you wish to use it on.
Wes is condescending when you ask a question and replies with short, rude emails. There was little to no practice in class and no review for the tests/quizzes. Not even for the final. Additionally, there are no retakes and you cannot fix mistakes on labs. He's entertaining but lazy to say the least. This class costed me my sanity.
Wes tries to make the class fun and all, but he leaves out a lot of major details and doesn't have structure to his teaching. In my honest opinion, he is rude and condescending when it comes to asking about when grades are posted or a question regarding to understanding the material
Hard class, but he does well at explaining things. You have to be on top of your homework/prelabs/studying or you wont do well.
