Wes is a hilarious guy, and I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures. Although, you won't really learn much from them because of how fast he talks. This is a python and networking class and you will never learn python from him as he won't teach it. Good luck googling. The class is just very hard all around, and the tests are not multiple choice.
Wes is awesome. I will take him for any classes I can since I am an IS Major. 201 is a pretty easy class most of it you can google or just reason out, but Wes answers emails reliably and has office hours. Plus he is hilarious and a little weird.
Wes is awesome. His classes were super easy and he is super helpful in and out of class.
No. Just no. If you want to take this professor for IS477 goodluck getting better than a C on his tests. Study guides are worthless, they will not apply towards the test at all. All of the assignments are in python which he will not teach one bit of. All I have to say if you accidentally apply for his class is goodluck.
This is networking class. But, python is involved, which is pretty much the same as Visual Studio c#, BUT, he won't teach you how to code, meaning if you didn't get a solid ground in IS360 then you are screwed. 2 tests the entire semester, midterm is a breeze makes you think the final will be easy but it'll be the hardest ever. DO NOT miss class!
Get ready to work. This class is hard especially if you don't know Access and excel. He teaches you but still sometimes small things mess everything up. Its easy to ask him questions but sometimes it"s embarrassing asking him bcuz he'll solve what you're dealing with so fast its hard to learn from it. He talks fast and speeds through lecture.
He goes through everything fast. He provides class exercises which help. For the midterm and final you are allowed to use a 8.5x11 double sided sheet. Start projects early and maybe work in groups so make friends and make sure no one is alone. It's a hard class you need all the help you can get. Help each other and learn.
Professor Cox is very kind and understanding. He is always available to help and really wants you to succeed in the course. I would recommend working in groups on projects to lessen the work load as they can be very time consuming. Overall had a great experience in the class.
This spring was tough for all of us, but Cox transferred and managed the class well after we went to online instruction. Pay attention and take notes during his lecture, they are very useful. Project wise as others suggested, work with others would be easier, his projects and homework are inspirational and constructive. Worth the work and awesome!
Class is not too difficult and it is organized very well. Just stay up to date on lectures and there will not be any issues.
Wes is such a great professor! The workload is a lot but he is more than willing to help during office hours! I am not an IS major so this class was hard but like I said he always helps during office hours. I wish all my professors were as knowledgeable and helpful as him. 10/10 recommend
IS 201 was a little bit harder than IS 301 with JT Stark for me; There are a lot of excel projects and homework. Overall it's an easy class, and if you have questions about your excel equation he responds quickly. You don't have any midterms, just one final. I would take this class again, it was an easy A for me. Professor Cox is awesome!
A all around great professor and person. His lectures are very clear and easy to understand with little knowledge left out. I would highly recommend if you are looking to take IS201.
I would not wait till the last minute to start any of the assignments, some can be difficult to wrap you're head around.
This was a great class. I liked the professor a lot but the work that we had to do was extremely difficult. This was taken online during the whole COVID pandemic so it made it increasingly hard to learn the material needed for the homework assignments. This doesn't mean Prof. Cox was to blame by any means. His video lectures are clear and concise.
Professor Cox is one of the best professors I have had in the college of Business. His assignments are well laid out, and if done in conjunction with the labs they are super easy to complete. I took him for IS 201 and IS 477, both times getting A's in the class. If you can take him, then you absolutely should.
Great course. I actually learned a lot and find myself using excel more. I had no problems but I could tell Prof. Cox was available and helpful. I had to take it online due to COVID but I was glad for his recorded lectures.
Pre-recorded lectures that all pertain to the assignments. He does additional "pro tip" videos that help guide you through each assignment. Seventeen assignments throughout the semester. No quizzes. Cumulative final test. Overall this was a great class. He's extremely helpful and always available to help. Would take another class with him.
Probably the most chill professor I've ever had. He had prerecorded lectures that were great to review. The labs and homework assignments were never too difficult and if you were ever stuck, he includes a 'protip' video with some possible solutions to common problems for that assignment. It was a great feature that helped me a lot when I was stuck.
Professor Cox is very fair with grading and has a very funny attitude during his recorded lectures. For projects, he would forgive you if you turned it in a couple of minutes late. He is a respectful guy that replies to your emails in a reasonable amount of time and is good at explaining components of the project in detail.
Professor Cox is reasonable and kind. His assignments are all useful, no busy work, but they might take you a few hours so dont start at 10pm the night its due. Its usually easier to complete the assignments in one sitting too. Watch the instruction videos he makes for the assignments and labs because they really help. It was a great class.
Great professor overall. Very kind and reasonable. There was very little busy work which makes him stand out as an IS professor.
Professor Cox was Awesome as a Professor! Gets right to the point when teaching and very concise! It was wonderful being your student!
I loved taking this class. Professor Cox was super fun and his lectures were enjoyable. Only complaint is that the final is worth 40% of your grade and it is ROUGH. I would have cried had proctorio not been on. Im assuming Ill go down 2 letter grades because of it. Im very upset. But besides this terrible end, the rest of the class was great!
He's a great professor and very accessible when you need him. The homeworks are time-consuming and will take a few hours to do. The plus side to it is he gives the solution and tips to help you solve them.
Ive taken Wes for two different courses and loved him each time. During covid hes incredibly accommodating and lets you progress through the material at your own rate (as long as you get it done before the assignments due). Assignments and labs are time consuming but thats all you have to do and theres not that many of them. Tests can be rough
I have taken Professor Cox for two classes (IS 477 & 201). Each class is rather simple, if you kept up with the lecture videos and understood the labs. His exams are a bit rough so I would suggest creating his allowed cheat sheet ASAP and study accordingly.
professor cox is good cause he actually cares, this semester was hard but i would email and communicate why i was turning in assignments late and he would understand and give me more time to turn the assignment in. Aslong as you pay attention and do the work on time this class is a easy B atleast .
This class was challenging online. All lectures are pre recorded but sometimes are hard to follow. If you have no previous experience with spreadsheets or databases you are going to struggle through it. 1 test and it is the final, worth 40% of your grade, not easy at all.
He's a solid choice. Clear on expectations in each assignment, willing to help whenever needed. Super test heavy. We spent so much time on dense homework assignments throughout the semester and they didnt matter much bc the final was 40% of our grade. The material is too dense for there not to be a midterm and for the final to be cumulative.
This class was extremely difficult and I spent hours working on projects. The lectures were pre recorded, but don't really help you with the projects. Professor Cox goes too fast and doesn't break down concepts. Having a partner is almost a must to do well in this class. There is only 1 test but its 40 percent of your grade and its extremely rough.
I took IS 477 during Spring 21. All the lectures were async, so I did wait awhile before I started watching them since they were not necessary for the homeworks, but I really enjoyed his lectures because he would give a lot of real world examples. Wes is super accessible, and will usually respond to an email within a day. One of my favorite profs!
Really good teacher, would highly recommend. Walks you through every assignment and provides a detailed study guide. As long as you are paying attention, this class shouldn't be too much of a burden. 9/10
Amazing class, lots of assignments due in a short amount of time, but managed to get 80% of the projects done during the class labs, and is great because you get instant help when you get stuck during class.
His teaching methods are great. Very clear and concise. Doesnt waste your time explaining meaningless background information and always lectures with the intent to help you understand the material.
He is vindictive, hates suspected cheaters. Don't ever use a service like Chegg or Bartleby in his class, he will report you without any warning at the END of the semester so there is no chance for appeal within normal time limits. I have seen professors give warnings or second chances for seeking help using outside sources, but he is unforgiving.
Hes a decent professor, and is very nice if you approach him ahead of time on stuff. Dont wait til the day of an assignment being due tho, because he will not help you. His lectures are interesting, but assignments are: extremely long, tedious, and not specific in instructions, so be ready to work for hours on labs and homeworks
I love Professor Cox. I wish I could have him for all my classes. He is super helpful in class and outside. He finds a way to help you understand the material also. He is such a great Professor.
This teacher will do anything to accommodate a student, most flexible professor at UNR. Another great thing this teacher does is being able to make such hard theory easy to understand for students.
Do the labs, do the homework, study and you'll pass
Cox is AWESOME! Had both 201 and 477 with him. Inspired by online, though this semester was in-person, he still does online asynchronous lectures, and we only meet in-person for labs and review. 2 exams with a note sheet, labs REALLY help a lot with homework and concept understanding. He's very caring and supportive to our questions/concerns ^_^.
Be very careful taking this class. It was supposed to be in person but it ended up being online except exams. He tells you to collaborate with your classmates but then try to charge you for cheating. He won't even talk to you first or anything. Just send you the charge sheet. Proceed with caution. I have been told by various students that he did.
Professor Cox is a great teacher. He is understating and is willing to work with his students for max understanding. Just get your hw and labs done and you should be fine!
I thought professor cox was a good teacher who was clear on what he expected of the class. Although some assignments may have been a little confusing, he was there to answer and help. Work load was kind of a lot being an accelerated course but not too much to handle.
Professor Cox is a great professor! There is a lot of labs but before ech one he makes sure to give a lecture on the subject. He is a great help during the labs as well! Not an easy class but he makes it easy.
He is very caring and wants everyone to succeed. You have a couple labs and have time to do them in a computer lab with him walking around and helping. If you get stuck on anything, just ask and he will show you exactly what you did wrong and help you fix it. Group projects are very effective if you choose the right partner. Overall great class.
Super nice guy who wants you to pass. There's labs and homework due every other week throughout the semester. But he explains everything clearly and walks around the lab while you're doing your work, and if you raise your hand and ask a question he shows you exactly what to do.
Good class, and simple instructions for the assignments and if you get stuck he is very patient with helping you out. Honestly, a great class and will help you to learn about business as a whole. His lectures are very informative. I would highly recommend taking his course.
Professor Wesley is a great professor. The material may be a bit difficult to follow at first, but if you reach out to him personally and ask questions, he takes the time to explain more in-depth. He also responds quickly. I've had questions over the weekend and he responds within an hour. Had Zoom meetings to help with projects. Highly recommend.
Professor Cox was a good professor. He does go a bit quickly and expects you to understand the material right away so be aware of that and ask for help when needed. The labs are farely easy, the homework was a bit challenging as the semester progressed, and the tests were all written (so no multiple choice) he does allow a cheat sheet though.
He is
I have had Wesley Cox prior to this class. Previously, all of the assignments featured "pro tips" videos, which were integral to my sucess, primarily with Microsoft Access. However, this time around, his "pro tips" videos fell short, and I wish they would've been more helpful overall. P.S. My poor grade was due to my own poor attendance in class
If you're coming in completely new to programming, it will be challenging. Prof. Cox's grading style is fair. The pace of the course can be quite fast so you'll want to avoid putting things off to the last second. I was always able to get a response within 24-48 hours.
Professor Cox is very challenging but overall a great professor He is very knowledgeable about IS. while this class was extremely tough, I learned a lot and the packet tracer homeworks were pretty fun! (once you knew what you were doing). Most people say IS475 is the hardest course in the IS curriculum, but I disagree, this is. Tests are HARD tho.
The class itself can be challenging, but if you go to lectures you should be just fine. He gives a grading rubric for every single assignment and told us exactly what would be covered on exams. Dr Cox definitely wants his students to do well, and its pretty easy as long as you put in a little effort.
Super caring professor, always willing to help out with questions and grading is somewhat lenient. Some of the actual class material was a bit confusing, he does go through it a bit fast. Also lecture/lab attendance counts for 5% of your grade, you can miss up to two classes and still earn full credit for it though.
He has a very good personality and his class is pretty easy.
He is very welcoming and really cares for you. He will try to help you as much as he could. He is also very generous in giving points.
Assignments take literal whole days to finish. Plus, if you're on mac good luck. You use an online server that is super laggy and unresponsive.
He is very knowledgeable and helps as much as he can without just giving the answer, if you don't know how to use access and excel, his assignments take 2+ hours each to complete, and there is a lot of assignments due over the term. If you watch the "tips" videos on assignments and watch lectures you will do fine.
I took this class over the summer, which condensed a semester long class into six weeks, this caused all the projects and lectures to get condensed into a near constant stream of work. It's not difficult by any means, just be careful to make time to study for the exams because they're harder than you'd think.
Had him over the summer. Assignments/lab, hw, and exam (midterm and final) are each 20% worth of your grade. Super manageable class as long as you watch the lecture vids and pro tips you'll do fine. Some assignments do take a while so start them early if you can. btw Mac users have to use the remote server for Access- it wasn't bad laggy sometimes.
I took 2 classes with Professor Cox to complete the MSBA program. Even tho the classes that Professor taught were some of the more difficult ones considering that I have a nontechnical background I can say that the lectures and the class structure helped a lot to advance my skills.
He gives students a decent amount of work to complete but also provides enough time to get it done and is happy to help with any questions. Exam questions were also very straightforward and completely made up of things we had covered in class
Dr. Cox has a great class. Sometimes the content is difficult but he is very open to questions and easily accessible outside of class. He's also a very down to earth person that understands when life events come up. I would highly recommend his course. The homework is challenging but necessary to prepare you for real world application.
Pretty good lecturer with only 4 hw in the class and 8 in class labs. During labs he is quick to help out with questions. The homework is fairly simple once you understand packet tracer but that can take a little while. The tests are fairly challenging so be sure to study. Attendance is taken with a sign in sheet every class.
You have to do assignments and those assignments are quite lengthy. Try to take this class with your friends cause some of the assignments allowed us to submit with a group.
As long as you pay attention is easy to follow just wish he had a TA for the labs.
Really time consuming but not a hard class. You'll have some late nights working on things but if you have a good group for the optionally-groupwork-based projects, you'll be alright. hard but fair.
If you show up to class everyday you will learn everything you need to know on the exams, and won't have a lot of work to do outside of class. The professor is good at making time to answer questions in class and labs, so if you show up the class isn't too difficult.
He is a very good professor, he is very knowledgeable about excel and databases. As long as you pay attention and go to class, this class should be very easy to get a good grade. He will answer any question about any assignment he gives as well.
Professor Cox does a really good job explaining the material and making sure you understand how to complete your work. I never felt that I couldn't ask for help on any of the labs or larger assignments.
I feel like the class would have been better if we were in the computer lab at all times since 95% of our assignments were on Excel and Access. The assignments that were worth more points had minimal instruction and you were pretty much required to reach out to him. With no TA either, this was difficult to do outside of the computer lab.
Cox is good when you interact with him during lab or office hours but in lecture he talks so fast and isn't too great at explaining. We have a lot of projects throughout the semester but if you attend all the labs (which you have to because he takes attendance) you will be fine. Go to office hours He is very helpful there if you are confused.
By taking his lectures you could learn complex concepts in a clear and understandable manner and also he is a proficient professor who prepares thoroughly for each class, ensuring that the material is well-organized and presented in a logical sequence. he have a clear plan for the session, including learning objectives, activities, and assessments.
The best instructure I've ever had. I greatly recommend taking courses with him
I had him for the Python class, and he gave us a chance to re-submit our homework for a better grade each time. The tests are on paper, so make sure to practice a bit of code that answers the practice question and memorize it, and you'll get a good grade on the tests.
Cool class, very interesting topics. Prof Cox is a funny guy and will keep you interested during lecture. Tests are handwritten and can be tricky, big project due in deliverables the second half of the semester. Go to class and attend office hours if you need it and you'll be fine.
If you get the chance to take Wesley for any class, do it. Professor Cox has been the most knowledgeable professor I've had when it comes to coding. The classes are by no means easy, but Wesley takes time to walk around the room to ensure everyone knows what's going on, working with students individually to help them in the area they are stuck on.
This is the second class I've taken with Professor Cox and he's a great professor and very knowledgeable. If you've taken his IS 201 class, it's the same setup. Homeworks and labs aren't too challenging, but take a while to finish. Make sure to study as the concepts can get confusing fast.
There isn't a problem that he won't help you out with. He will walk you through any problems you have and make sure you gain an understanding of the material. You will be successful in his class as long as you keep up on your work and work with him.
Wesley is one of the most straightforward professors you could ask for. He is extremely knowledgeable and more than willing to help and understand situations. After having several classes with him it is clear that he builds his courses very well and labs always make sense and can be done just by following his instructions.
This class is WAY too hard. Pre-recorded lectures that don't cover everything in the homework and we're left trying to figure out assignments for unreasonable amounts of time every single week. Class time is basically office hours and a lot of us no longer attend because it's too hard to fight for his attention to get good help. Lots of exam points
strongly advise not taking 415 with him imo. i'm an honors student with a near 4.0 GPA cumulative. the class is simply terrible. class avg on midterm was a D+. lectures are all recorded and dont cover most of the stuff on the homework as others said. I have not hated any course more than this in 4 years. cant stress enough how much to avoid. run
I feel bad for leaving this review because he's a nice guy. 415 is miserable at best. None of us are learning, only struggling. I hope this class isn't offered in the future. All it did was hurt good students. 90% of this is out of our control. Y ask how we learn best via the 1st day form and implement none of it? The stress made me lose hair
Do yourself a favor and never take this class
Professor Cox is a great professor. He was very knowledgable and explains the topics very well. He is very accessible and is super helpful in explaining parts of the labs and assignments you might be having trouble on.
the other classes that have guided practice packets are good this one is not the lecture vids do not go over enough to do the homework no way to practice and no notes on the exams is harsh. I recommend his other classes this one I do not. sorry
He is a good professor in my masters
I took this course specifically because I've taken other classes with Wes. He is a great teacher but for this class specifically, the pre-recorded lectures do not prepare you well for the homework. I came into this class with previous programming experience so I did not struggle as much as others, but I know my classmates struggled a lot.
Wes Cox is a great professor. His class can be a little challenging, but if you ask for help and take the time to understand the material, you will pass his class. Mr. Cox is also a great help when coming to this class, he will take the time to help you understand the material if you ask. Good luck!
He is good.
the only problem i had was during exams. professor doesnt allow cheat sheet so you need to memorize the formulas and concepts.
Excellent Professor!
