He is a really cool guy and a pretty good professor. The class is tough because he teaches it like a large lecture in that he spits out a BUNCH of info and isn't really interactive with the class. Take good notes and go to class and you'll be fine.
The only good thing about him is that he's funny. Class was very difficult. Talks SO fast, I had to bring my laptop to keep up in notes. Essay tests are crazy: he'll ask 5-6 ID questions, you choose 4, and write a full page (in the big blue book) on each--however the study guide had 60 (SIXTY) possible ID's to choose from! Way too unrealistic. AVOID!!!
Prof. Hussey knows his material and his lectures were great. I found him very helpful and he was available through email and office hours. He engaged the class and answered questions. He welcomed discussion and stayed on topic. His class was hard but if you went to class, took great notes, and read your book, you will do fine. He talks fast! lol
Knew what he was talking about and passionate about it. Hard to keep-up with his lectures because he talked so fast. Usually took about 5 pages of notes a day. We had a novel and 2 textbooks. I did not read much all, but I went to all the lectures and got an A. Study guide has over 30 terms. Must be able to write a page on each; 5 are on each test.
He is an awesome professor. He teaches upper division and expects you to be upper division. He hands out study guides prior to the tests but based on his lectures it is kind of easy to tell which ones he will use. He has lecture outlines online. Funny and will answer any question. Offered a study session with pizza before the final.
He talks really fast and grades strictly but the tests are really straight-forward if you go to class. He does 'secret lectures' that don't show up on WebCT and are guaranteed for midterm or final. The paper is fairly easy too and his humor makes the lectures engaging. Even though this was his first semester at CSUS, already one of my favorites.
This individual should not be teaching this subject...he warned his gov 180 class not to take him..I wish I would have known...I would not have taken him...his lectures do not coincide with his exam questions...I suggest you use the text not his lectures...SPSS is a pain and somewhat useless with his class...
No compassion - spent the day of the final in Student Health Services for 4 hours, with the flu (I don't even want to mention what I was going through). They gave me a shot that put me to sleep for two hours and tried contacting him...He wouldn't let me reschedule and I sat in class and had to leave to puke. Got a bad grade, wonder why...
I just have to put some input...I have spoken to 19 students regarding his current class and their feelings about his teahing techniques. every comment was negative and can't wait to put comments in at the end of the semester...I woiuld warn anyone from taking him unless of course you become a teachers pet...
I like Professor Hussey and I'm surprised more people don't as I'm hardly a top student or anything like that. I listen in class, take notes, get A's and B's on the HW, bomb the quizzes like most people -- that's why he's adding points at the end of the semester. The project and presentation aren't that bad. I don't get why people aren't happier...
It's an upper division class -- expect to do upper division work. Wes has very high expectations for students and he does not budge from them. It is not too hard to do well if you pay attention, do the reading, and study (like you should do anyways). Highly recommended.
I loved professor Hussey!!! He was funny and extremely engaging. His class was a challenge, but well worth it. You will know the politics of California very well by the end of the semester.
This class was harder than it needed to be. The expectations are very high, and while he is available for help, he makes you feel stupid if you ask a question. The quizzes have nothing to do with the work, and you are left alone to figure a very complicated program. Plan on spending all of your time on this class. Not recommended.
He's really enthusiastic about the topic. Class PowerPoint lectures were interesting and relevant, but you'll have to do at least some of the reading. He gives study guides (IDs) for the exams which is helpful (although they're long). As long as you go to most of the classes & do at least some of the reading you'll be fine. Would recommend!
Attend class!!! Not all information is in the books, he adds so much more info to his power points. His mid term and final are RIDICULOUS.. Keep up on the reading and you'll be able to pull something out..
Hilarious and witty professor. Very direct style of teaching..doesn't go off on soapbox speeches. Stays on topic! Open to ideas and very helpful.
Great professor, but the class material is dull. Doing the homework projects is like having a root canal done without pain killers to numb your mouth and gums. It will take all of your time and may affect your other classes. Caveat (Beware)
Hussey is an excellent professor, who expects you to attend lecture and read the books. He is always willing to help, and happy to clarify, which is sometimes necessary when you get into the nitty gritty. Yes this class is difficult, but he tells you exactly what he wants so there's no excuse. I recommend him highly!
He's known as being a staunch right-winger among the other professors in the department, but only once did that ever shown through in his class, and only slightly. He treats opposing views fairly, but demands you back up your opinions. The subject matter is difficult but he guides you through it well. Very funny and lively lectures.
Only professor who could have kept me awake in a 5:30 class after being on campus at 8:00 AM. Funny and has an extremely quick mind. Does not wear his ideology on his sleeve like most Government professors. The class was difficult; I think he could have made it easier if he'd wanted to. Not much help when it comes to questions/take notes!
Likes to make students feel dumb for asking questions. Mid term is super hard, I havent taken the final yet. His research paper is easy and he gives almost the whole semester to complete. Total "Drama Queen"! Two students recently came about 2mins late to class and he walked out leaving the rest of us who were on time sitting for about ten minutes.
Most informed, intelligent and hilarious sense of humor - expects a lot of his students, but gives a lot to the class! His lectures are the best in the Government section ... only one class left in Government, so I know. If you want to learn something about California Government or Statistics, take Hussey.
Almost everything you need to know is from lecture. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to go to class to get a good grade. When it comes to the midterm and final make sure you choose to have a review session over a study guide.
He does a great job lecturing and his exams are pretty much straight from the lecture. Take good notes! He's pretty funny, but also a tough grader. Be prepared to study hard for the midterm and the final! One paper(30%), midterm(30%), and a final(40%) for the work load.
Loved his class. Will make you laugh if you are open to sarcasm and pessimism. Need to be there for lecture, and will not pass without being there. Exams relate exactly to lecture. Grade is based on 2 exams and one Proposition paper. Does offer Extra credit, but each is only 5 or ten points.
Hussey made California government interesting and full of life. As a jokester, his stories were light hearted and connected to the course material. You MUST attend class to do well. I fair amount of memorization but put in some effort and you'll pass with flying colors. Definitely one of my favorites.
He knows what he's talking about and lectures are interesting. There's only 2 exams and a paper. He's an extremely tough grader. The exams are difficult and you are required to remember every little detail in order to get a decent grade.
If you don't show up to class, you will not have the info for the exams. Everything on exams is in lectures. You don't need the book if you're present. Best lectures ever!! Super funny...
I took his first "Political Parties." It's two key term tests and a giant paper as the final. The tests are the most challenging I've ever taken--in regards to the number of terms he assigns for each test. You write a page in the large blue book on 5 terms but he makes you need to memorize 40. That's a lot of excess information to learn.
Only a midterm, 8 pg research paper, and a final. MUST attend class!!!!! You will not pass if you don't attend. His lectures are interesting, and he makes them funny! Do not have to read Holy Land, he will only deduct a few pts from final. And make sure your paper is polisci and NOT a criminal justice paper.
It seems as though lecturing comes naturally to him. He is confident, passionate, and makes witty jokes. I never feel uncomfortable asking a question in class. The exams were sort of difficult because you had to write one page on several terms and remember everything! The research paper is sort of easy. I would take him again!
Awesome lectures. Funny. Clear on expectations. Gives study guides for exams. Assigns readings but no quizzes. Types up lecture notes for students to bring to class. Recommend going to lecture, it's interesting- even if you're not a government buff, and it will help you in the long run. Exams done online, final done in class. I would recommend him.
Brilliant professor, interesting and humorous lecturer. Not an easy class; exams are super detail oriented. You cant just know the overview and succeed. Warning!! Do not wait until the last hour to take the online exam because if anything goes wrong (such as computer or mouse glitches) you will not be able to re-take the exam and will be strewed.
In order to pass the class you must attend record lectures, put in a lot of work the class is not easy. If your simply taking it for GE suggest to take GOVT 1. Only 2 online exams which are tricky suggest to do study groups, 1 paper tough grader. Final requires to know 60 terms & U.S. presidents begin studying from day 1.
This class is hard if you don't pay attention or take any notes. He talks very fast, so be prepared to write fast or bring a voice recorder. His lectures can be boring and some days, they are funny. There are two online quizzes which are about 1 hour long. For the final, you have to know 60 terms and he picks 9 to be on the final.
He is excellent, and very knowledgeable about the subject he teaches. This is my second class with him and have enjoyed it.
As said in the tags, skip class you wont pass. His material is lecture heavy, and requires you to take notes. His 'slides' are nothing but flavor text and offer nothing in test material. 2 Tests, 1 required online forum assignment, and 1 paper. Solid choice but he will make you earn it. Forgetting to do the online assignment failed course.
Took this class over summer, came to every lecture and he rewarded us with an optional final! Go to class! You'll be fine! He does lecture a good amount, however his lectures are very interesting. Highly recommended!
im minoring in govt, and to get as many classes out of the way, i took 180 in summer. First off, Im not much of a studier. Really, i barely ever study, but had to for this class(a little more than usual), I got a high B(midterm), went to an extra credit event, & didnt need to take final to still have an A. Really fun class and very informative!!!
Awesome professor and lectures. He says text books are required but I didn't open them and got away with an A-. Took it over the summer and only things that were graded were midterm and final. Each are very easy if you pay attention in class and take notes. Does take role but only so if you had perfect attendance you didn't have to take the final.
DON'T TAKE 154 IF YOU LIKE YOUR SANITY. STRUGGLING TO COMPLETE 16 PAGE PAPER HE ASSIGNS...
Hussey is the best! I took him for 154 and 155. He's insanely knowledgeable and his lectures are engaging and funny. Doesn't take attendance, but all of the test material is from lecture. Essay prompts were actually really neat! His office hours are the real gem. He'll always help you and tell you what you need to do to do well in the course.
Prof Hussey makes his lectures interesting and engaging. There is one in class midterm, one online exam, and one 7 page paper. The class isn't hard as long as you study the material. He doesn't take role but going to his lectures is what's going to help you pass.
Very straightforward professor. Only had 3 assignments that were all based on lectures: 1 written midterm, 1 MC online exam, and a 7pg paper. He required 3 books but I never used them, however they can help during the online proportion. Lectures were long, and he talked fast but if you take notes and attend youll be good. Would recommend.
He's very smart and his lectures are interesting and funny, if you like dry sarcastic comedy. Don't need to read but go to every class. Basically midterm, final, and one paper. For tests gives you a list of terms and lets you pick a few on the exam. Very detail oriented. A very nice guy, more professors should teach like him.
He puts his own spunk into the lectures. Overall he is a good professor and I would take him again. There were 2 tests and 1 essay which made up all of your grade. He does not babysit you and expects you to do what you need to do on your own.
1 midterm, 1 paper, 1 final. Attending class is not mandatory, but you will pass if you attend class. Textbook is not needed if you attend class. Almanac book is needed for the paper, but is reserved for you in the library. Lecture heavy, but hilarious.
The lectures are on the dry side, yes - even by Poli standards. Testing is also rote - test/test/paper. Wesley isn't what I'd call good with people, he has an introverted manner which can make it rather difficult to have a talk with him. He's also very unforgiving, class wise and interpersonally. Recommend another option if possible.
Typical CSUS grad gov class. Grading (& % of grade): 20 page Research paper (30%), lead 1 class (20%), 1 on 1 oral final (20%), class participation (30%). He is extremely knowledgeable, but the class isn't very interesting/challenging. Does a poor job at managing discussions/students. No feedback given, & a totally subjective "participation" grade
Really great professor! He is really funny and knows a lot about CA politics. I am planning on taking him again in Fall! He is a little awkward, yes, but that's what makes him so much cooler than some other professors!
Professor Hussey's lectures were amazing, but his requirements are impossible. He has two midterms (online, SO HARD! and each question was given 1 minute to complete and then a couple of extra minutes left over), and one paper (minimum 7 pages and he expects a lot). A lot of political science majors love the class, but it is not an easy A at all.
Had Hussey for POLS 182A, which is the 3 hr Thurs night class in Spring for the Sac Semester Program. Greatly respect him as a person, and he's HILARIOUS, but I HATE the way he grades. His tests are ridiculously difficult, & 1/4 things weighed towards your grade. Tests & papers are crucial. I showed up to every class & got 93/100 for participation.
Great professor. Passionate & knows his stuff. 2 online timed midterms mostly on the textbooks. Yes textbooks with an s. Have to be there in class to know what he will test you on. Lecture heavy. Very hard grader. 1 final essay on a Proposition of your choice with requirements. Available outside of class and willing to read your essay before due.
Class is a lot easier when taken as a summer class. 2 online exams, 40 questions each. Get about 50 minutes. Read the book and listen carefully to his lectures. When he repeats something twice, write it down! You may see it on the exam. He is very friendly and funny. Do not walk into class late, he will make fun of you.
Incredibly difficult exams. Nearly nothing from lectures are covered on exams. Makes it very confusing what to study for and is unhelpful. Nice guy and his lectures are entertaining but does not know how to make an Exam off covered material
The lectures were awesome. But screw his exams. It doesn't really matter if you read or not. 3 Exams... Class Averages: 1. 22.4 of 36 2. 20.3 of 35 3. 20.9 of 35 We pass only because he curves all the grades, most questions are not online. Very bipolar questions, either really easy or really hard (tricky / EXTREMELY specific). No middle.
Exams are not based of the lectures. It was the WORST class I have taken this semester. Was not sympathetic towards students even though we had massive changes in our lives. Please avoid this Professor so you could safe your grades. Being student is hard enough but having a horrible Professor could ruin a semester.
Hilarious and great lecturer. Makes what would be a dry subject very interesting however his exams are AWFUL! Incredibly difficult to study for despite what he emphasizes during the class. Stay away! Likable guy but Id rather have a kitchen sink thrown at my head than take his class again fr
Likable professor. Makes the class intriguing but holy hell buckle up for his tests. I really hope he reads these and adjusts the way he grades. Exams are brutal and his ego prevents him from making any real sort of study guide which he jokes about. Spare yourself and stay away!
Awful awful class. Tests are based off of 3 textbooks that he self only covers and instead emphasized his lectures. But of course little from his lectures are on the exams. No study guide, no going out of his way to help students. Avoid this class if you can. Heard hes better with his other classes but take my word for it and dont take this 1
This is one of the meanest professors I have ever had. Took him for summer school (zoom) and on the 1st day of class he cursed at a student for burping on zoom. So of course teacher wouldn't post this recorded zoom because of his guilt. Many questions on exam are not in book or lectures. Class average on exams is 70%. Almost impossible to pass.
Hussey is a real one. His lectures contain all exam material, and exams are stupid easy if you watch your lectures. He has no filter which can keep class entertaining and for a political science professor you will be surprised that the class feels informative without bias. Don't buy your textbooks if you know you'll go to all lectures.
I had professor Hussey for POLS 180 & 155 and by far was the best profesor Ive had at Sac State! Very smart, caring and shows that not only does he like to teach but also that his students pass the class. He makes the lectures so interesting that people want to jump in and comment. He is a fair grader and will give extra points at the end
Lectures are necessary for tests, you won't need to read if you take thorough notes. Online courses: He won't record lectures so us students all did it instead and would send them around. That's what got me the A. Term paper is not as simple as he will say, ask a lot of questions. He is a condescending person but it's at least its an easy class.
Professor Hussey is a sarcastically hilarious teacher, but at the same time he can be quite rude and patronizing. If you want to pass the class take extremely good notes since the tests questions are strictly from what he says in class. Try your best in this class because grades are only based on three test and one final writing assignment.
Graded on 3 exams and 1 paper. No feedback given. Average grades on test were low C's and D's so he would "curve" the grade so everyone managed passing grades. Crappy grader, mildly entertaining person, bad teacher.
Your grade is based off attendance & a fat paper due at the end. He's a tough grader in the sense that he expects you to fully understand what you're talking about (as he should). If you briefly talk about a topic & then move on, he will still give you some credit for at least mentioning it. Really opinionated. Always available to answer questions
2 tests and a reasonable paper at the end. Lectures are heavy, kind of ambiguous, and inconsistent; I had to check my wifi connection multiple times to make sure it didn't quit on me because he suddenly stopped talking. Other than that, he seems scary but he's actually hella cool. Taking him again next semester.
He has assigned readings, but I never did them. He is a fast talker which doesn't bother me, but my friend said she had trouble keeping up. His lectures were fascinating! Exams were online so he made them intentionally difficult but he also gave a huge curve to each (like 14%). Use the Wayback Machine (aka Internet Archive) on your paper.
The professor has hidden bias that he reveals through his lectures. He (intentionally) asks questions on his exams that he has not covered in class. When he speaks, he talks so fast that no one can keep up. His enunciation is (horrible)... often blending words to the point that they lack coherence. This is the worst professor at CSUS.
lectures are extremely boring and hard to follow. He is loud and cusses a lot in his lectures which I find really unprofessional and irritating to have to sit through. Attendance is mandatory even though the only assignment in the class is a 20 page research paper due at the end of the semester (you can write it with a partner).
Do not take this professor. Hes nice and approachable but this class was horrible. %70 of our grade was based on one 18 page essay due at the end of the semester & %30 was based on attendance which was mandatory. So each day you miss a class your grade goes down. The lectures also dont help for the paper so youre on your own. AVOID TRUST ME
If you are a procrastinator, do not take this class. There's a 18-22 page paper at the end of the semester, but in my opinion, the lectures do not help at all. He is very knowledgeable on the subject matter and he's passionate about it, but it's super hard to follow. It's a graduate level paper for undergrads.
Hussey is not a good professor. His lectures are poorly given, he speaks far too fast, slurs his speech, and is overall not interesting to listen to. He gave me a low B on my final paper, despite the fact that I followed his prompt completely. I even met with him to clarify it, and I wrote based on the information he gave me. Avoid him!
He is very knowledgeable about political parties and how they work in America and other nations. No homework, quizzes, or exams; just one huge research paper (18-22 pages) due at the end of the semester. Don't buy the textbook, it's not needed. Instructions were clear and easy to understand. Attendance is 30% of grade. I thought he graded fairly.
Lectures were extremely fast-paced. It was really hard to understand him, he mumbles all the time and eats up his words. Honestly, I couldn't understand about 30% of what he was saying during the lecture. DO NOT take this class if you aren't an auditory learner because he just talks the whole lecture with few to no visuals in his lecture outline
This class is one paper that is 20-22 pages!! He was fair and gave the entire semester to do the paper. START EARLY, this paper will catch up to you if you don't start early. You can work with a partner or alone, and he is very willing to help at all times. Although you have to show up to class the lectures don't directly connect to your paper.
Hussey's teaching style didn't suit me. Lectures were hard to follow. I was lost most of the time. Attendance isn't required but I recommend. There are two exams, one paper. Exams are online but hard. Instructions for the paper make NO sense. He's not helpful when you ask for help. Don't take this prof. I'm saying all this as a straight A student.
Very funny and nice professor, but the course content itself is challenging and the lectures were too short (1hr 15min) to go over everything sometimes.
Lecture heavy is an understatement; tells you what he repeats will be on the test... its not. The test is designed to stump you and he expects most students to get a C on the tests. I don't think professors should be setting students up to fail. Really fast paced but my class was 3 hours long, and he would almost never give breaks, it sucked.
He puts things on exams that are not in the lectures. He's hilarious, but not clear on his grading with papers, and his tests usually get the class an average of a C. He is strictly a lecture-type, and doesn't post notes. He also does a lot of trick questions and tells us we don't need to know it for the exam and then he puts it on the exam.
Extremely hard tests, talks the entire class. Very strong about his opinions. Only grades 3 exams and 1 paper. No late work, gives extra points for tests because everyone does bad, that should tell you something.
As a student who has always been in good academic standing and has never had issues with professors, this particular professor's behavior to be incredibly unprofessional. He loves to shame and call out students for no reason for his own amusement. He teaches government yet he holds strong anti-government views, which he pushes onto students.
Hussey is not an easy professor for this course he was my only option. Three exams one paper if you fail one of the exams you have to live like a monk to get a pass in the class. All of the questions on the exam come from his lectures so write down EVERYTHING he says. The questions use his language and are very specific. Course is doable but hard.
got a 70 on my final paper because it was “too short” the requirements was 7-10 pages and i did 8… half of the time the test questions were niche.
Most of homework will be essen. taking notes, or recordings you make. Three exams, answers most found 3/4 lecture, 1/4 textbook, only lasts an hour or so at home. Advice: do final paper with research partner, pick a relatively simple prop. Great lectures, funny and engaging, love office hours. Will help to find footage of Arn. Schw. gov. announce..
GO TO CLASS. TAKE NOTES, RECORD AUDIO OF LECTURE IF YOU CAN! Although attendance is not mandatory you're gonna want to be in class in order to pass his test. No other assignments than 3 exams and one research paper. GO TO CLASS!!!
