Professor Whitney is an excellent educator. I learned so much from this class, particularly about the harms of the model minority myth. I hadn't considered its effects on Asians who struggle academically or its impact on their mental health. Her lectures are not only relevant but also insightful, addressing several topics I was curious about.
I learned a lot including about the model minority but she didn't provide much feedback.
One of the kindest and most supportive instructors I've ever had. She's very organized and uploads all materials lectures, slides, videos, and assignments on Canvas. Also uses powerful documentaries from different countries. she's flexible with deadlines, offers extra credit, and even accepts late work. I highly recommend taking it!
Professor Whitney is flexible and full of humor. She gives much flexibility if you have a lot going on in life. If you focus on a career outside social studies and want to learn about Asain cultures, I recommend her class.
Professor Ahn is a great professor. Insightful in the material she composes, making the reading quite enjoyable. Easy going, always ready to help.
Prof Whitney provides the reading/video materials for each modules. Depending on how much materials, you usually get 1 or 2 weeks to complete the assignments. Assignments are questions you have to answer based on the materials & they are word counted. Easy class if you read assignments on time. She does provide extra opportunities. No final paper.
Professor Whitney's teaching style encourages student participation and learning. Grading and assignment criteria are clear. She is accommodating regarding assignment deadlines, applying only minimal penalties for late submissions. This course dismantles the Model Minority stereotype informing on the discrimination Asian Americans continue to face.
That she is to the point and very informative and easy going to talk to. She is very knowledgeable teacher and I learned a lot about Asian history through her and I think her for the inspiration.
She is very knowledgeable and to the point. Her grading is laxed but she's very inspirational teacher and I would take one of her classes again.
Taking this class online during summer. All course materials are provided. The modules are well-organized and easy to follow, and topics that interesting and relatable. There are 2–4 assignments per week. Readings are manageable, but be prepared to write. Overall, the course is well-structured and engaging. Highly recommended!
Engaging modules and excellent taste in course relevant films.
Professor Ahn was really caring and helpful who made the course very easy and simple to complete. She provided everything at the start of the course and allows you to complete it on your own time and schedule. Although there is a lot of reading, it was really interesting and helpful to understand Asian American history. She also gives extra credit.
Professor Ahn is wonderful—her online course is one of the most pleasant experiences I've had in CC classes. She's highly organized and provides all necessary materials in an easily accessible manner, and she's very clear as to what needs to be accomplished in a week. Her directions are very precise. I highly recommend her instruction!
She is an awesome teacher and very informative and easy to follow for a online class although there was a lot of electric to what and listen to it was still fairly easy to follow. I learned a lot from his class and would highly recommend anyone that wants to take Asian 001 to take this with Whitney our professor. Thank you
As an Asian American, I often wonder my place in the history of the United States. This class made it possible for me to fill in that gap. I am a much better learned person than when I was in the beginning of this semester. Fun Class!!! I learned a lot!!!
The professor was very clear on her subject questions and very informative. Thank you, Professor.
Great Professor I recommended everyone to take her ASIAN 001 class online to get your ethnic studies out of the way. No tests, extra credit, no papers, just do your work and you will pass.
Enrolled because I needed an ethnic studies class to graduate. Could have chosen a different ethnic studies class, but I am interested in the Asian American perspective. Prf. Whitney makes the course requirements clear, and course readings are engaging and thought-provoking. She also gives extra credit assignments and allows late submissions!
I took this class to complete a GE requirement, and Professor Ahn made everything super clear from the materials to the assignments. You get 2-3 assignments each week, there's a lot of readings but they were pretty interesting and I definitely learned a lot. She also offers extra credit!
I decided to take this for Summer and this was by far the easiest class. She let's you have access to all the modules so you don't have to wait until next week to do the next module, although there are due dates. No textbook but lots of lectures and things you need to read through which isn't hard. Some documentaries and a movie.
My first thought of taking this class is difficult because its history. But when I started doing homework and reading, its interesting because I am able to adapt new things from this course. The professor is nice and she cares about her students. This course is mainly on the writing side and mostly reading, but I would still recommend it.
An easy workload with plenty of time to complete it, numerous extra credit opportunities, and the modality was online, making it convenient.
Easy-going and smooth sailing through this course. The professor is the best and caring. No rush to finish homework, but still has due dates to follow. There's a lot of reading to do since it's history, but lectures are easy to follow.
The professor has a clear text about the history of Asian Americans. She outlines them through writings and uses documentary videos to back up her stories. After completing the class I was definitely more knowledgeable on the history of Asians. Great work!
Professor Whitney Ahn is really a great professor. She has clear instructions and and provides all the information needed in lectures. Very understanding and caring.
Really great professor! Explains everything on lectures and provides great information.
My last assignment, her class is not difficult at all, the work she leaves are very good, they are questions, if you have to take this class, I recommend that you take it with her, it is incredible and super friendly. I am very grateful to Professor Ahn, she let me enter her class at the last moment, I am very happy to have taken it with her.
The professor is amazing, provided reading material, and the assignments were easy to understand and complete if you did the reading.10/10 would totally recommend this class and professor. I learned a lot during the course of the class, and I truly enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed taking Prof. Ahn's class! I learned so much from this Professor and found each assignment to be tailored toward the student's experience and the overall scope of the world. Would definitely take again! :)
I would take this class again, even with my time constraints and how busy I am with my work week she still accepts late work and provides clear question and answer assignments.
pretty nice professor who gives enough time and workload for the summer semester
Good class. You have a week to get everything done, and she accepts late work. Fair grader, got higher grades than I anticipated. A lot of reading though, and assignments can be a bit time consuming and difficult.
She's a great teacher im taking it for summer and her class is very fast paced right now but its alright since every assignment is due monday
This professor is super chill and nice! She makes a disclaimer in the beginning of the course that she will take late assignments and that she understands everyone has different schedules and circumstances- which I thought was very thoughful!
Her teaching style was excellent in my opinion. I had a lot of things to do during the summer this year, but I never had a difficult time doing the work she gave me. Although the work wasn't super easy, it was still simple and not too difficult to accomplish. I would retake one of her classes. She is an excellent professor.
Prof Ahn's 5 week summer class is relatively well paced. Most of her assignments are Q&A responding to class material and it is very important history to know! There is no paper(thankfully) and many extra credit opportunities. Would def recommend 1st as an elective.
Whitney Ahn is very kind and helpful to her students which has made this course a pleasant experience.
The professor is great Some specific qualities of a great professor might include clear communication, a passion for the subject matter, and a willingness to engage with students both inside and outside the classroom. A well-organized class with clear expectations and expectations helps students feel prepared and understand what is required of them
A well-organized class with clear expectations and expectations helps students feel prepared and understand what is required of them
Super clear and organized. No essays, not too much reading, but I still learned a lot. Would definitely take her class again.
she's cool and gives interesting assignments.
great lessons
Amazing teacher who's lecture notes allowed me to learn deeply about past and current Asian American issues that I wouldn't have known otherwise!
Professor Ahn's class on Asian history was so interesting! This is my first time taking this type of class and it was a pleasure having her. Normally, I hate reading long lectures, but professor Ahn made her lectures very informative without being long or boring! She also gives great feedback when needed. I would definitely recommend her class!
Prof. Whitney was amazing! She gave us just the right amount of material - enough to learn a lot without ever feeling overwhelmed. She's very understanding, accepts late work, and really wants everyone to succeed while genuinely learning more about Asian Studies. I'd 100% take her again!
Professors Ahn was clear with as classwork assignment and readings. The class was fast paced but was a short summer course. She also replies timely to emails and is accessible to answer any question you might have regarding course material.
This is a review from Professor Ahn's Asian 002 class at Los Angeles Valley College. Professor Ahn is one of the very best professors. This class is online-based, and you must read a lot of her materials, but you will learn a lot from it. She treats her students with respect, and she cares about her students' success. Highly recommend!
Excellent professor to take for the 2025 summer 5-week course. Straightfoward class, workload is very managable and light, no textbook needed as it is provided part of the course. Would take again for an easy A.
This class was an online asynchronous class, so there weren't any lectures. But the professor's chosen materials for the class and questions were thoughtful and fit into lessons. It was quite easy to access her if I had any questions or needed more clarification. I learned so much about Asian Americans in a short amount of time of five weeks!
I took Professor Ahn's class over the summer, and it was asynchronous. The course didn't require a textbook, and all the reading came from texts she uploaded for each unit. The assignments were straightforward, and she also offered extra credit, which was a nice bonus. I definitely recommend taking her class!
Her assignments are pretty straightforward and I love that you don't need a textbook!
I really been enjoyed my time in Professor Ahn's class. She is flexible, understanding, and extremely fair. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who needs a social sciences credit (or even if you just want an excuse to have a great teacher!).
I just wanted to put it out there that her class is wonderful, and extremely doable for those taking many classes/working. The grades and standards are made clear, and so long as you submit your work in acknowledgment to the material, you will excel. Would take 10/10 don't think twice there's no better teacher
Great class if you want to learn more about Asian American history, identity, and stereotypes like the model minority myth. Readings can be heavy, but it is well structured and interesting to read. Workload is fair—mostly reflections and participations. Overall, very eye-opening and worth taking!
Definitely will recommend to take. Lots of reading to great follow up questions and easy to understand will definitely take again if needed.
I would for sure take this class again! The class is mostly reading and answering questions and although the class I took was only 5 weeks and fully online the teacher seemed very nice!
I took her Asian 002 class over the summer. She does not require a textbook but she does have a lot of reading. Her assignments had a word count which was probably the hardest challenge for the entire class. If you reach out to her, she will respond very sweetly and fast.Lastly, she takes a late work which helps PLENTY if you have a busy schedule.
All homework is due by the end of last week of the semester. Incredibly easy A; there is no way you cannot get under an A in her Asian 101 class.
Great Professor. very caring. 100% would take him again! I got an A+. Each week is an assignment or 2, but pretty easy and straightforward. I would really recommend.
if you're trying to take this class for more units, I really recomend. The lectures/modules are very easily managable and super easy. I took this class for additional units and honestly I don't regret it one of the easiest classes I've taken. Consists of weekly participations and reflection and some readings. The documentaries were my fav part!
Really good class if you're looking for something light and doing it for additional units I really recomend. Modules consist of weekly reflections and participations there are readings every week but nothing you can't handle.
I took this class to fill my requirement for transfer, and I'm glad I took her class. Really light and chilling, in class meetings, we would be watching related films or videos. And reading materials would be provided on Canvas. There would be writing assignments due every week ( just about 300-600 words) Easy and straightforward class !!
I highly recommend her class. I prefer in person courses, but her online class was just as clear and well organized. The syllabus matched the course perfectly, and the weekly lecture notes made everything easy to follow. Deadlines were always clear, and even difficult topics were explained simply. It was an enjoyable and smooth learning experience.
Professor Whitney is the best professor I have in lacc. There is a lot of work and reading, but the professor was considerate and good grader.
This class was very interesting, the professor is very knowledgeable and response to emails in a timely manner. She is very supportive and she's an excellent grader. I would take the class again if I could and I would recommend her class to all students.
The assignments were clear and informative.
Professor Whitney was an awesome teacher. I enjoyed taking her class and i recommend any and everyone to take her class.
Professor Ahn is a great professor. She's very knowledgeable, organized, and genuinely cares about her students. Her lectures are clear and engaging, she explains the material in a way that's easy to understand. The workload is manageable and grading is fair. If you put effort, you'll do well. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend her.
I appreciate the lectures and the time she spent making sure that we were informed and aware.
Professor Ahn isn't one of those professors that make you suffer for their course. Instructions are clear, the modules are well organized, no bad surprises. She is chill, funny, and kind. Please please if you need Asian American Studies, take her class
This course was highly informative, and I didn't just learn about Asian American history; I learned about my own identity and what the earlier generations had to go through to provide the rights and democratic ideals for all Americans. The professor made this class meaningful and interesting. I would highly recommend this class!
This professor was very clear with the course materials by being detailed. During lectures she also seemed really passionate about the subject and allowed students to freely join in. Her teaching style was really simple and easy to learn. I never did find myself struggling with the course material, it was planned out well and very straightforward.
This professor is very supportive and always ready to help students with any questions or problems. She is an easy grader and gives clear guidance on assignments. The class is well-organized, and she creates a friendly, encouraging environment. Highly recommend her class!
It was a wonderful experience!
Professor Ahn is amazing. She's so sweet and understanding so do your part and communicate with her so she can work with you. There is a lot of reading to just prepare! Her assignments are very tedious so make sure you do what she asks and you are guaranteed to pass. Overall, I will definitely take her again.
One of the best gems at LACC. Prof Ahn is straightforward with you, but she is also a kind, caring, and insightful professor. She is the ultimate cultural professor in terms of Asian American History and pop culture. Attendance isn't required but you'll regret not going. Her presence alone is worth class. I will miss your class, Professor Ahn!
Very detailed and well-structured lectures. The professor is knowledgeable and I learned a lot about Asian American history, identity, and politics. The workload is steady, with assignments given on a weekly basis. I appreciated that she was also considerate of students' time and well-being, including giving us a break during Thanksgiving week!
Professor Whitney is very flexible with course work as well as grading. You will not feel any kind of pressure when it comes to course. It will go very smoothly and you will learn a lot. She focus more on making her students learn and understand rather than tough grading.
Professor Whitney is honestly one of the best profs out there. She understands that we have lives outside of school and completely works with you. Her assignments are interesting and not that long, as long as you read your modules you'll will do just fine. I wish she taught other courses so I could take her once again!
Professor Whitney is one of the best professors. She understands that students have busy lives and is very flexible with submitting late work. There is a lot of reading, but I would gladly take any of her classes.
I have never felt as knowledgeable about Asian American history as I do after completing Professor Whitney's course. I love history but not memorization on heavy exams. Her focus on reflection and understanding made learning meaningful. Her flexibility with late work greatly helped me while balancing school, work, and parenting.
It was a great course and really loved to attend this course.
She's an awesome teacher, her work is easy but it teaches. She treats other students normally and not with a stuck up air around her. The work is VERY, very easy, keep yourself informed and you will succeed and I'm sure she will appreciate your determination in the class Also attendance isn't really mandatory, just keep up with your work tho~
Professor Whitney is an amazing teacher! Her classes are very interesting. She is very understanding and flexible with coursework and grading. You won't feel any pressure in her class. You truly learn and understand the material rather than just memorizing for exams. I highly recommend her. She makes learning enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this class, lots of reading material but condensed in a digestible time frame. Professor Ahn also does great with communication if you have any issues, as well as extra credit opportunities.
If you want to take an Asian American course, I recommend taking Professor Whitney's class. The work was clear and easy to do. The professor is funny and relatable. Overall, would take this course again and recommend for anyone out there.
Super awesome
Great professor
I found my experience with Professor Ahn to be highly pleasant. Though class was not always mandatory, I found myself looking forward to going due to the community that the class had formed with her over the semester. She is a very open-minded person, and is very understanding that life has its ways to always get in the way of school.
I enjoyed taking this course, the Professor is funny, kind, and pretty lenient on assignments. There are a lot of module pages for each unit, but they are simple, quick, and easy to follow along. I would take this course again if I could, and I definitely recommend it to anyone considering taking an Asian American studies class.
The best professor I've had. Doesn't force you to respond to other classmates discussions. Very straight forward and do your work and receive the grade for the quality of work turned in. That's it. No fluff or BS.
She is clear on what she wants and keeps her word. Her class is very easy and you will have many chances to make up work. I would take her again.
Easy class if you read the lecture materials and keep up with assignments. Going to in person class is optional but is preferred if you want to really soak in what you learned. Overall would take the class again !
Love this professor! friendly for everyone.
She was a good Professor, explained the material well and accepted lat work as well along with extra credit. I would recommend taking her course.
Prof. Ahn's Asian 001 class was mind-blowingly amazing and definitely an eye opener. I have learned so much about Asian Americans, their struggles and challenges, etc, in this class. The syllabus was organzied, clear, and straight forward and so is Prof. Ahn's expectations, teaching style and grading. Highly recommend her class.
Professor Whitney is such an amazing and understanding professor. She genuinely wants to just spread positivity and the respect she has for Asian American history. This was by far the best class I've ever taken. There is some homework weekly but it more than manageable to do and she takes late assignments. I respect her so much.
Prof Whitney is very outspoken and hilarious! Shes very knowledgeable and passionate about the class and what it stands for. As a fellow Asian American, the class was very relatable and I enjoyed the course. Be prepared for lots of discussions and reflections! Best part, is she accepts late work:)
Love this professor!
this was a online class and honestly I had no issues what's so ever with him. Honestly my favorite class and I found it super easy. Definitely recommend to take his class.
Professor Whitney is an amazing professor! Her online class consists of a couple of readings per week/every 2 weeks and 2 reflection assignments. I learned a lot about Asian American history and her readings don't feel tedious! She also accepts late work until the end of the semester. Overall I definitely recommend her.
The professor clearly explains complex topics, uses organized lessons with examples, and fosters an engaging, supportive learning environment.
Honestly I took this class to get more credits and I ended up loving his class. I enjoyed reading the textbook and overall the discussions. Honestly it was the easiest online class I have taken and there wasn't that much exams. Be sure to always write one to two paragraphs when answering your dissertation questions and you should be good.
Took this class for my major. I thought it'd be quite work heavy. it is and isn't. I recommend this class regardless. Get ready to read though! Do your work properly and everything will go by without a hitch unless you're like me who turned in stuff late. Fret not though! This amazing professor accepts late work. Good luck yall!
Honestly was a good class overall. Everything was very clear and he gave announcements when it came to a new week. Overall the online class was very easy for me and when it comes to discussion posts make sure to write one to two paragraphs per question and you should be good. I would honestly retake again.
I like this professor pretty much I recommend taking this class and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)
