This was a 1000 level course and she treated it like it was grad school. I don't mind a hard class or when teachers don't want to post notes. I do mind, however, when teachers won't post notes, but come to class and literally read their entire lecture from a piece of paper and expect everyone to keep up (and I am a quick note taker).
very easy class, go to class and take her notes and you'll do fine. the tests are a breeze if you either read the book or look over the notes.
I don't know how anyone could say anything negative about her. She's interesting, pretty cute (when ditsy), and the class is very easy, if you go. The only people who are going to complain are those who don't go to class, because the tests are straight out of her lectures. No, she doesn't post notes for the morons who choose not to come to class.

Great Class overall. Quite a bit is covered for those who are interested in a brief history of the world. She is a great lecturer, and is very kind and always willing to help. You must go to class and take notes. Reading.....nope.....Just take notes and study them. Great class for history credit!
She makes you work hard for your grade, that's for certain. Not as confident as she could be, but she cares a lot about teaching and tests from the lecture, you don't need the book. It's a big broad subject, so she had a lot to cove, and if you happen to miss a class, tough luck. She gets a lot of points for not taking herself too seriously.
I loved her class. She doesn't post notes online but if you come to class everyday and take notes and study them a little, you will pass this class with flying colors. She does cover a lot of information b/c this is a very broad class so I would highly recommend taking notes on a laptop if you have one. It makes things so much easier in my opinion.
All of her lectures are all you need for the tests and she only asks 3-5 questions on the books. Some of her test questions are opinionated so they are a little tricky. Just make sure to have the notes from every lecture and you're set.
Her class was pretty easy. I personally do not like multiple choice tests but I made B's on all her tests. She acts as though she is an English teacher when grading essays so the usual spelling/grammar check will not work for her. Other than that it was a pretty interesting class.
covers WAY too much information for just one test. almost impossible to know it all and she really expects you to. Not too hard if you STUDY A LOT. Grades papers extremely hard. tough on grammar and content. I have written a lot of papers and i dont think i have ever been graded that hard. GOOD LUCK
Good lecturer. The tests were a little tough, but I thought her paper grading was right on. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll learn quickly to come to class as nearly every minute of class period is spent copying notes.
She's a very good teacher. Attendance isn't mandatory but the tests come right from her lectures, which she organizes on a powerpoint thoughtout the class and you have to fill in the blanks and details, read 2 of the 4 books for reports and you will be O.K. She is very nice and smart and it is a good class even if you don't know or care about Asia
You just have to study your notes and you'll pass the class. She assigns 4 books and you have to write a paper on 2 of them. Lectured every class...gave an outline...test questions came straight from the lectures. If you don't go to class, get the notes from someone and you'll pass EASY.She's also fun to listen to because she has a newscaster's voice
Easy class, and she's very hot to boot. :)
She's a bit of a ditz, but overall very clear. Sucks if you miss a day, because there's no textbook. TOO NIT-PICKY ON THE PAPERS. Tests not bad, just STUDY.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU HAVE A REAL INTEREST IN HISTORY. If you are looking for easy, look elsewhere: this class is TOUGH. that being said, great class and excellent prof. tip: turn papers into TA prior to the due date, it will help your grade immensely. just show up, take notes, study, and read the books. Ditzy, but knows her stuff.
she is VERY sweet. has a sense of humor. would expect for the class to be boring at times but she performs a miracle and keeps it interesting. Asian names r hard to learn. the TA was kind of weird interjecting in the middle of her lecturing but he was ok. she will research a question if she doesnt have a straightforward answer for u. tests are MC.
In a rush and didnt notice that i entered the wrong class title in the review right under this one.
sorry entered the wrong class title in the review right under this one. meant to say <----.
Great Professor and person. She is really caring to toward the students. Something in her is just different than other professors. She really cares about the students.
As long as you take notes and go to class you'll do fine. Really wants to her students to do well, but act like grown ups.
The class was easy but does not take away from the quality. A bit of reading, but easy reading. This was my second course with Bendeck she is a very nice woman and very helpful. There have been a few questions she was unable to answer on the spot but she will always get back to you even if its shooting an email shortly after the class.
Great Teacher! Really cares about the students doing well. study your notes and you'll pass the class. Lectured every class...gave an outline...test questions came straight from the lectures. If you don't go to class, get the notes from someone and you'll pass EASY.makes the class enjoyable!
Great professor, she made the concepts interesting and taught very well. Very good at covering a lot of material effectively and cared a lot about the students succeeding. Go to class or make sure you have all the notes notes and the tests aren't bad
Will spend 20 minutes detailing something in a lecture then negate it in one sentence, give both as test answers and mark the one she spent tons of time on wrong. There is no book so the class is based entirely on her thoughts and opinions. Available to meet outside of class but will not address any concerns or grievances students have.
solid teacher, long essay, good books, moderately interesting subject.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I signed up for this class, which is required for my major. I was pleasantly surprised - she makes complex issues understandable. I probably learned more about economics and history from her than in an actual econ or history class. Very interesting lectures, good luck if you miss a class though.
Tests are straightforward and word for word from the lectures. The paper assignment was moderately challenging. Not a hard class to pass if you study a day or two before each test.
Lectures are hardly coherent. Though the class material itself is interesting, listening to her monotonous tone makes it difficult to comprehend what she wants us to know for the exams. It would be much more helpful if she gave out written notes or at the very least, used a textbook.
Constantly contradicts herself which makes for very confusing lecture notes. Wouldn't be as much of a problem if she used a textbook. Grading of essays is done by the TA's and exams are scantrons. Make sure you go to class because she is NOT willing to help if you miss anything.
One of the easiest classes I have ever taken. I have no idea how anyone could actually fail it. If you had a problem with this class maybe you shouldn't be in International Affairs.
You have to pay attention & write notes in this class, it is not her job to baby you. All the exams are based on your notes, so if you don't go to class you won't pass unless you have a friend willing to give you notes. The essays are easy, I recommend handing them in early to the TA so they can edit it before it's due. The exams are 50 ?'s MC.
This instructor laid out the material in a very comprehensible and memorable way that made it easy to study for the test. If you study, the tests are easy. Attendance and an attention span are required, if don’t possess either of these things you will hate this class. Only one outside classroom assignment and no book to buy.
One of FSU's best professors on Campus in the international relations field. She is very fair, concerned about her students, and makes lectures interesting from time to time. Her lectures are always clear and straight to the point. Go to class write some notes and you are guaranteed to pass with at least a B.
Overall she is a pretty good professor. If you attend class and take notes, you will do well. Going to class is key because she will not post anything online. Also, her tests are pretty easy since she doesn't take any questions directly from readings that weren't covered in class.
She lectures, you take notes. Study notes for exams. 3 multiple choice exams; 1 outside assignment (Summary Analysis that consists of 5 papers) based on assigned readings. Each paper must be 500-800 words & is graded by TAs. Not a hard class. I passed with a B because I slacked off some. Knowledge in history will def help you in this class.
What a disappointment, only 3 exams & no chance for extra credit, taught by her assistants, Sarah and Zach. If you are good at memorizing you'll do ok. Ive bought studyguides, made flashcards etc. Papers are graded poorly by the assistants. I am very good at writing papers & got a C. Already talked to advisor & changed my major Very dissapointed.
In summer express session, you only get 3 chances! All material is scholarly journals. She doesn't keep attendance. She gives outlines and lectures. Being a good note taker and being in class is important because there are no extra credit opportunities. She's strict on this! She's good. More input to better prepare for her tests is my only gripe.
Bendeck is amazing. She takes the time to help student when they need it, makes clear of what she finds important, and is hella funny. She's a great teacher and mentor.
There is no textbook, she lectures at you, and without those notes you are screwed so attendance is mandatory if only for your own sake
Dr. Bendeck is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. The course material is organized and easy to follow. It is primarily lecture based with some extra readings to help you really grasp the material. When she lectures she gives you plenty of time to write accurate notes and never goes off into random tangents.
Dr. Bendeck is one of the best profs I've had at FSU. She is extremely clear in her lectures and if you write down all she says, you'll do well. Just don't miss class. Otherwise, her tests are very straightforward - just multiple choice and truefalse. I paid attention every class and just studied about 4 hours before each test and got an A.
Professor Bendeck was a great teacher. Very straightforward, easy to follow, and clear in what she expects from her students. The tests are a joke if you read over the notes, but you do have to go to class, and the paper wasn't that hard. No textbook, and you don't have to do all of the outside readings. Very easy A.
She's definitely the best professor I've ever had at FSU. She had amazing lectures and really stimulated my interest in international affairs. There are no textbooks to read/ PowerPoints posted, however, so attendance is directly correlated with class performance. She is clear with what she expects from her students and pushes them to do well.
If you are an International Affairs grad student with a serious interest in Asia, all of her classes on China are highly recommended. The classes are largely exam-based so somewhat more study-intensive and less paper-focused than your usual grad class, but very worth it - grades fairly.
She's honestly an amazing professor. Ive learned so much from all her classes and love her teaching style. She does play games or go off on random tangents. You walk in to class, she lectures what you need to know and then you leave. No fooling around and very professional, which I love. Be a good note taker and study and you will pass with an A.
Pay attention and you will get an A. you need to attend class or you will fail and take good notes. All her classes are extremely interesting and I felt like i became so much more knowledgeable about international affairs after taking all the classes she teaches. Best professor at FSU. Her modern china and total war class are awesome
love the fact she doesn't beat around the bush or constantly makes jokes or goes on random crazy tangents.. she is clear to the point and doesn't waste her time or yours. The lectures have a pretty clear outline and you always know exactly what is going on at all times and once she's done you leave. Very smart lady
I would recommend this teacher for anyone wishing to major in International Affairs. Her lectures are highly informative. The only con about this class is you cannot miss a lecture, ever. She does not take attendance but if you want an A, coming to lectures are a necessity.
She is a very clear lecturer and it is a pleasure to go and just listen comfortably. She grades written tests and research papers very harshly. I was confident of my performance but then received a 70 on my exam. However, if you do badly she will always take time to show you what you did wrong. She does not post lecture notes so show up.
This class was one of the hardest things I've ever taken. I showed up, studied, and still didn't pass. By a margin of like 1%. She's a tough grader, and this class is pretty tough. You literally can't miss a day without it being impacted on your grade.
disappointed because i really enjoyed her class and it was very interesting to me. I never missed a day. There are 3 test and 1 approx. 8 page summary-analysis on 4 different articles. 25% Each. I worked and studied so hard yet got just enough to pass! Also her TA's were extremly unfair in grading papers and she should look over those. Good luck
Very good at explaining complicated ideas. Her Thatcherite politics may rub some students the wrong way but it doesn't interfere with her lectures. Nicely ties U.S. military history into Asian Studies. Recommended.
This is my second time taking Dr. Bendeck, because she's amazing. Her tests are pretty easy, just attend class and study. You can ask her anything after class. She is patient, funny, and kind. She will go over your test with you individually during her office hours to make sure you know what you got wrong. Hands down the best teacher I've ever had.
Great speaker and makes lectures really interesting. Very good professor and seems to care about her students. Loved her class.
The paper we had to write and the tests for this class have been really hard. She's really smart and a good teacher, but get ready to take lots of notes (other than just the outlines she gives).
This is definitely a class that weeds out students that aren't passionate for International Affairs. I recommend going to class every day because exams are entirely based on lectures. Great at managing her time and explaining material. Very knowledgeable, and approachable and friendly in office. No textbook. Study your notes to pass.
Dr. Bendeck demonstrates a clear mastery of her subjects- she is very thorough and knowledgable and makes class interesting. If you study thoroughly for tests you will pass this class easily. Would recommend submitting rough drafts early for papers for feedback.
She is very knowledgeable about the topics of the course. Her lectures are concise and interesting. If you take good notes and review them, you will find that 100% of the material on her exams is from her lectures. She provides many articles about the subject material to read, but you only need to read a few to write the term paper.
Dr. Bendeck is legitimately my favorite professor at FSU. I took INS3003 with her and decided to take INR3932 (Human Rights) just because she was taking it. Does she require a lot of reading? Yes. But does she explain things well and grade fairly? Also yes. She's also one of the nicest and most genuine professors I have ever had. 10/10
Makes lectures interesting but is such a tough grader. Biggest issue was taking notes b/c all she has is an outline and you have to write down everything she says. I wish she was more clear about what she wanted on tests or at least posted a study guide because the info is a lot and the whole test (midterm/final) is written.
Fantastic professor! Dr. Bendeck is super knowledgeable and conveys her information in a clear manor. You MUST come to class if you want to pass because she will not post any notes online. You will end up taking notes from when you sit down to when class ends.
This is probably one of the worst professors you can take at FSU. She just lectures and doesnt explain material well. The tests are full of unclear questions and material not covered in lectures. Sad this class is mandatory because it ruins peoples desire to learn about international affairs. Out of 6 classes I was taking this class was awful.
Super awesome professor! The class can be a little challenging since she doesn't post lectures and doesn't have a powerpoint really (its mostly auditory). However, she is super knowledgeable and cuts straight to the point and has no problem answering any and all questions. Just go to class and you'll be fine!
Dr. Bendeck is an absolute gem. The class was entirely lecture-driven, but she was engaging and clearly prepared to deliver each lecture and the material was always interesting. She has high expectations from students, but they are not unreasonable.
I absolutely loved her lectures! She would simply follow an outline on the projector which made the information easier to digest and take notes. Extremely passionate and knowledgeable on the subject. Dont slack on the article summaries and come to class and youll pass!
She is a great professor, probably my favorite this semester. You truly feel like you are learning. However, she has really high expectations and is a really tough grader. Almost got a 100 on her final and she would not bump my 89. Still would take another one of her classes though. You can tell she really knows the material and is a sweetheart.
Taking INS 3003 with Dr. Bendeck was amazing! You have to come to class in order to get the notes but you will want to come to class because the lectures are so interesting. The class was made up of 2 exams, a final, and a paper. Try and submit rough drafts early for the paper because it's graded really hard.
Professor Bendeck is extremely knowledgeable and her lecture style is very easy to follow. If you take notes and study before exams, you should do well. Her research paper assignment is the only thing you need to work on. Also, read the books she assigns. Theyre interesting and she has a test for each that are easy As as long as you read them.
Professor Bendeck is one of the most knowledgeable professors at FSU. With that being said her class is extremely difficult. You must always go to class because she never posts the notes online and her final essay is graded really harshly. She expects alot from her students . So if you aren't an international affairs major I wouldnt suggest.
Dr. Bendeck is an excellent lecturer and a nice person. That said, you MUST go to class and study to do well in this class. There are three exams based on lectures (non-cumulative) and you have to be in class to get lecture notes. The paper is based on readings provided to you. Definitely not an easy A, but a fair class.
Dr. Bendeck is easily the most knowledgeable professor I have ever had. She is an excellent speaker and her lectures are very interesting. I found the class to be challenging but Dr. Bendeck was very accessible and patient whenever I would ask for additional explanations after class. I have nothing but great things to say about her and this class.
She is an amazing lecturer. She keeps the material relevant and interesting. There's no textbook requirement but bring a laptop and be prepared to take a lot of notes. The tests are solely based on the notes, accompanied by weekly readings. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you don't go to class you won't know what's going to be on the tests.
Outstanding Professor! Skip class and you'll not have the notes she lectured that day as she does not post the PowerPoints or notes. Inspirational teacher who cares about what she teaches and makes sure to speak clear and slow for student to write down notes. Study hard for the exams. Go to office hours for post-exam and she'll explain your errors
Dr. Bendeck is an incredible instructor and person. She seems to know everything about everything and her lectures prove it. You have to attend class to get the exam content, but she is so engaging and knowledgeable that there is no reason to skip class. I highly recommend taking her classes.
Exams are hard but she is a great professor & makes it interesting. Class is made up of 3 exams and a paper. I would highly recommend her class.
Best prof I've had at FSU. If you're an IA major go to London with her! It adds an amazing experience to this class!
I loved Bendeck! She was a great professor that gave awesome lectures about really interesting subjects. She bases her whole class around her lectures and that is all she gives to prepare for the test, she teaches new materials up until the class before the test. She tells us our review is our notes so go to class. There are 3 tests and an essay.
Don't listen to any positive reviews about her. Dr. Bendeck will make your life hell if you take her. She is so inconsiderate of her students and doesn't care about them. Its her way or the high way. I had to battle at the department heads office about how bad of a teacher she was. If you want to hate your life, take her as a teacher.
She posts NOTHING on canvas. You have to go to class to get the info. I went to class everyday and took notes on EVERYTHING and still did bad bc she's such a tough grader. Only 3 tests and 1 paper. Not to mention she is the worst teacher I have ever encountered at school. Pleeeeease save yourself and DO NOT take her!!!!
3 tests and 1 paper. Final isn't cumulative. Everything on the tests come from what she makes very obvious/repeats in lectures. I found them easy, and I only studied a day before the test. You have multiple opportunities to turn in the 1 paper for comments/revision. She also offers considerable extra credit.
It is such a shame that this class is required for IA majors because taking it with Dr. Bendeck makes you wish you'd switch your major. She is so unnecessarily tough on everything. This is a very challenging class, especially with her. I would try to get a different teacher if possible.
Dr. Bendeck is hands down my favorite prof at FSU! She is lecture heavy, but the material is so interesting that you want to pay attention to it. Best way to study for the test is to go to class and take lots of notes and memorize those notes for the test. I am studious, so if you try and study as I did you will pass with flying colors.
I took the class over the Summer, and both "exams" where essay-formatted. I am not the strongest writer, but if you follow the comments of the TA's, you will pass. Make nice with the TA's because they will be your main line of communication and they will provie feedback for most of your assignments.
Dr. Bendeck is my favorite professor at FSU. INR3003 is one of the dryer classes she teaches but she is one of the sweetest and admirable people at the university. I want to be her when I grow up. She will make you work for your grade but I promise her classes are more than worth it to take!!
Dr. Bendeck is a serious professor who does not mess around. With her constricted attitude about her class, she becomes very inconsiderate for her students. I'm a senior now and I have taken many classes at FSU, so I know a thing or two. She makes her class unnecessarily difficult. DO NOT TAKE BENDECK. Take this class with another professor
Dr. Bendeck was amazing in her total war class. She doesn't take attendance and gives really good lectures but she doesn't publish the outline and says her study guide for tests are the lecture outlines so don't miss class. There's two essay tests and a research paper. Overall great class taught by an awesome professor definitely take but work hard
I absolutely loved Bendeck's lectures. You can tell she is experienced and passionate. I was doing well in the class until quarantine, when I missed some online deadlines that killed my grade unfortunately. Despite this I'd love to take a class with her again, definetly in person though lol.
She is not an accommodating professor. Does not give good feedback. If you score below a B in one assignment it is extremely difficult to get an A in the class. I got As in all assignments except for a 79 on the research paper finished with an 89.3. Her feedback for the paper that she was "lenient" and she should've given me "failing grade"
Dr. Bendeck is an amazing professor. Although her class is lecture heavy that requires you to be there to pass quizzes, they're very clear and she really focuses on you actually understanding and learning the content. She's very accessible and truly cares about her students. She's brilliant, in my opinion.
A well respected prof. at FSU be present and attentive in class. She can get distracted but otherwise is a very good speaker. Take good notes and you'll pass the exams that can be tough. One big essay, make sure you go to your TA's to review it and listen to their advice to get a good grade on the paper.
The key to doing well in Dr. Bendeck's Intro. to International Affairs class is writing down basically everything everything she says during the lectures. The readings are not really necessary, aside from having to read a few of them for a summary-analysis paper. Dr. Bendeck is FSU's China specialist, so her lecture on China is really interesting.
Bendeck is passionate about what she teaches and I have learned more in this Total War class than I ever have before in an online class. Graded on a few things so your performance must be above par on all assignments but as long as you take diligent notes on lecture and follow her instructions you should be just fine.
My favorite professor. never fails to amaze me. While her classes are never walks in the park you will learn something new every day!
The class consists of 8 quizzes (drops the lowest 2) and 3 papers. If you watch the lectures, read the provided readings, and take detailed notes, you will be good. I will say it is a lot of work time wise, but you do learn so much. Get ready to work hard, but if you do what is required, your grade will reflect that.
Dr. Bendeck is a great professor. This class was focused on China up to 1914. It is based on 2 tests and a paper. She is a great storyteller. If you are mildly interested in the subject then you will be constantly engaged. Take great notes as it is all lecture with a loose outline at the start of class. Test based on notes, paper is self-selected.
Dr. Bendeck is a very passionate and informed professor. She has really interesting lectures and few assignments (only midterms and a video project). She is a great professor but the class can be extremely hard, especially if you don't attend class. The information is only available if you attend her lectures, so if you go to class you'll be fine.
Dr. Bendeck's lectures are engaging and she clearly knows what she's talking about. I learned a lot from her class and as long as you show up, take good notes, and study, you'll do well. The class is graded on 3 exams and a paper, which are difficult but not too bad if you prepare. She's a great professor and gives feedback during office hours.
Dr. Bendeck is amazing, her lectures are very engaging and she's well respected. She is very knowledgeable about topics in IA and cares a lot about her students. Doesn't post her powerpoints and tests are all based on the lectures so you have to go to class to pass. There are 3 tests and one summary-analysis project all graded by TA's.
I had her for this and another class and I absolutely loved them. I've always had some criticism for every professor but I truly don't have anything for her. Both classes are graded by one project and the midterm and final. Attendance isn't necessary but she doesn't post notes so if you miss make sure you can get notes from someone. Take her!
Go to class and you should pass easily
While Bendeck's class is no walk in the park, it's worth the effort. Her lectures are engaging and she genuinely cares about student learning. unstuck study and regular class attendance are key to doing well.
Dr. Bendeck is the best, shes very passionate about international affairs and her lectures are engaging. She does not post her lectures so attending every class or having a friend to count on is really important for notes. The exams are straightforward and you will succeed by actively listening and taking good notes. Her TAS are not the best though.
Professors lectures were interesting but a lot of students struggled in this class. If English isn't your native language you might find the test question phrasing confusing. I wish the class had several quizzes on IA theories instead of map quizzes. The class had too many assignments that took away from focusing on INA Intro.
Good professor. Exams can cover literally anything you've been taught in the class so study hard for them. Her lectures are interesting and the map quizzes were a lot of fun. The policy memo papers were a lot of fun too, like a choose-your-own-path sort of deal. Pretty unproblematic class if you pay attention.
First and foremost, half your grade is dependent on the TA you receive for the papers you write. There is a MARGINAL gap between TA grading. Regarding the exams, if you do not attend class, you will not pass. Simple as that. Make sure to write down everything she says, not just what's on the board—most challenging class in the social science field.
Absolutely phenomenal lecturer, but you must attend class and note down every single word she says, as they will be on the exam almost verbatim. It can make class appear intense, but it makes her exams self-explanatory. For the essays, form a good relationship with your TA, as the rubric is strict but they are willing to help you out.
