Tough class. Grade is based off of 5 quizzes with the lowest one being dropped and a cumulative final exam worth 40% of your grade. Lectures are very up tempo and at times difficult to follow. Need to read the book to really understand the material. Helpful in office hours and nice person overall.
Duim is really good at explaining and prepares students well for quizzes and exams with clicker questions and practice problems. I suggest going along with the textbook for more clarity. Office hours were really helpful. There was no curve because mostly everyone did really well. A lot of old quiz questions were put on the final exam.
Need to put in the effort and really understand the material, but if you understand the lecture notes and can do the HW, you will be fine for quizzes and final. No tricks, just understand the examples in class and how to apply the equations. It was her first time teaching the class too. Go to her office hours!!
Good professor, but no curve makes it very difficult to do well. Would no take
Must go to class every day because she does not release notes. Very hard class.
Duim is definitely one of the few (if not only) professor at Davis who has a fair grading criteria. Her 5 quizzes and the final are all FAIR. She tests you on what she lectures on, you just have to study. Pchem is definitely hard, but she made it possible to actually feel good about the class. I know I am going to miss her next quarter ! Take her
Lab TA is only thing that matters. Actual lecture and quizzes are easy if you pay attention. The lab reports are where you can get in trouble.
Duim is a great professor. She explains the concepts very well and her quizzes are easy if you go and listen to her lectures. No trick questions. Do the homework problems for practice and you will do fine.
PChem is not an easy course and there're not many good pchem profs too. Dr. Duim is a smart and caring prof who teaches pchem well. Biweekly quizzes, dropping one quiz. Textbook required as you need it to study for her quizzes. Her quizzes are fair game. They're similar to the practice problems on the homework and lecture. Overall, great prof :)
Her dry style of teaching was not for me. The lectures are 50 minutes of furiously trying to keep up while she scribbles down notes. My biggest problem was that she would blaze through practice problems in class, without giving you a chance to work it on your own, and the practice problems often did not reflect the quiz material. DO not take.
Dium was a wonderful lady, and I enjoyed her class. She would spend probably 30% of lectures going through pointless, difficult to follow proofs, but thats my only complaint; her quizzes were fair and doable. Do practice homework and examples from class and you'll be just fine! No curve, really. Class was just slightly harder material from genchem.
She is a great lecturer. Her lecture is super organized and easy to follow. And lecture audios are on canvas. The quiz problems are often similar to clicker questions and textbook problems. Make sure you do the textbook practice problems and go to lectures.
Dr. Duim has been one of the best chemistry professors I've had at UCD. She went through the notes together with the students and was responsive to questions. The quizzes tested conceptual understanding, so at times they seemed a bit harder than what she did in class. But the overall structure of the class was doable, and she was a kind person.
Class is the most boring thing ever with her just reading from Enderle's reader. Tests are way too long and difficult.
She's nice but just reads from Enderle's reader and writes down notes from it while explaining. It's impossible to understand because she speeds through examples and switches from screen to screen. Lecture is bland, there's too many groups assigned on the OWL homework, and tests are difficult. Overall, her teaching style is just not for me.
She's sweet but her teaching overall makes you wanna fall asleep. She just directly reads from Enderle's reader and doesn't add any spice to the lecture. Her tests are quite hard too!
Professor Duim was a good professor, basically just used Enderle's reader to teach the whole quarter. It was her first time teaching gen chem, so she just taught how Enderle did. Midterms were really hard, but Chem 2B is just hard in general. Honestly she was a decent professor, OWL was really helpful in solidifying material.
Class is not superb but not bad. She's a nice lady. Lectures read off from Dr.E's readers. The 1st MT average was a 56%, 2nd one was a 67%. It's very easy to confuse when to use which equations, but if you knew the differences *CLEARLY* it's no problem. Midterms aren't too bad. Generous curve--got 82% overall in the class and ended up with an A
Duim read straight off of another professor's reader and rarely went into more detail. She struggled to answer students questions in a way that was easy to understand, and became angry at our class when we did not understand the test material and did poorly. She graded generously, but many people that passed still didn't understand the material.
Writes the majority of her notes on an ipad and she goes at a medium pace in lectures which made it easy to take most of your notes in class (also depends how fast you write) and if you miss something, she's one of the few gen chem prof that record their lectures! Her exams are relatively easier that other gen chem prof I'd say too. Very kind!
It is clear that Dr. Duim is extremely intelligent. However, she doesn't teach very clearly at all. I was often lost and confused to the point where the textbook didn't even help. However, post-labs and labs seemed to be easier and more manageable than in 2A. I will have to retake 2B. It was very difficult and not well taught.
Professor Duim is an okay teacher, I never felt fully lost but I also never felt fully engaged in her lectures. She taught straight out of Enderle's reader which was nice but we didn't get to ever hear it said in new ways. Her tests were too long and her averages so low that there was a pretty good curve at the end.
Dr. Duim is incredibly intelligent. She is passionate about her class and her students, and if you work hard you can get the grade that you want. Also, be sure to go to office hours. She is great at explaining concepts 1 on 1, office hours are the reason I got the grade I did in her class. I would definitely take her class again.
It was her first time teaching this class, and she was alright. Didn't like the discrepancy between homework and practice problems compared to exams, but it's to be expected since she's first. She's trying her best and I respect that a lot! Her exams are based mostly on certain parts of lecture, and not homework unless she goes over them explicitly
She really cares for her students as she always encourages you to go to office hours and will post events that may interest her students. Her tests were fair, though you have to go fast. Her lectures were a bit confusing to me, the reading was obnoxiously long, and homework is confusing and not that useful for tests, so do them with a grain of salt
AMAZINNGG. shes such a queen. very clear in lectures and lots of office hours to answer any extra questions. i didn't rlly like that lab attendance was required bc it was so long but I'm glad I took 2B with her.
honestly idk why she's rated so low. She is very clear in lectures goes over lots of examples and goes at a slower pace than other professors that I've had. I'd say her tests are straightforward and easy to do well as long as you time-manage properly. She's sweet and ready to help her students any way she can. A great option!!
Very clear and concise, patient and respectful. Always stays 10-15 min past lecture to answer questions. Tests are very fair and very doable if you can manage your time properly
I absolutely love Prof Duim! Her lectures are super engaging, she's easily accessible and the expectations for exams are pretty clear (if you look at the practice tests she provides). She has also been super understanding about the pandemic and genuinely seems like a caring person. I've truly enjoyed her class and felt that I've learnt a lot!
I really like Dr. Duim. Her lectures were very organized and she was straightforward. She gave lots of examples in class and asks for questions. The tests are hard and there is a lot of homework, but they are manageable. You definitely need to study outside of class. She also brings awareness to different cultural holidays and current events.
Dr. Duim is an AMAZING prof for che2b. Her lectures are clear and concise. She always goes through practice problems and thoroughly explain concepts. You definitely have to put in work outside of class, but thats how it is with all chem classes. Tests are easier than other profs and exactly like the practice tests given; just keep track of time.
I love her lectures because she gives a lot of examples and explains everything really well but her tests feel too long for the amount of time she gives. I ran out of time on every test this quarter. The class is difficult but she tries to give lots of examples and make it easier.
If you want a professor who will go in depth into irrelevant subjects to the point where the class is so far behind that she rushes through important concepts and you're now left to teach yourself or your friends teach you then she is the one for you. Yeah, professors are humans too but yikes..
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!! This teacher does not care about her students. Actually, one of the worst professors I have experienced - she seriously celebrates peoples struggles due to her inept teaching ability. Good luck trying to teach yourself when you do not even know what to expect on exams. Stanford graduate? More like Stanford reject!
Horrible teacher. Puts something that we learned the last 5 minutes of lecture before a midterm on the test and made it to be 35% of the test, which everyone got wrong. Copies Enderle's reader for everything, might as well read that instead. I wish Davis just gave us Enderle's lecture link rather than have a teacher copy of him.
She gave a lot of examples in lectures, but went by pretty quickly so I felt lost most of the time. Discussion worksheets and OWL hw really helped me learn. Midterms were really difficult, especially with the weird time limit thing she did. Went into the final unsure if I would pass, waiting on grades rn. If you're not great at chem, good luck :)
When I had to go to class, I would pray (p.s. I am not even religious) that something would strike me over the head to bring me away from this miserable class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO! Even if they are seats open, I recommend to do it next quarter with any of the other professors. Save your sanity by not taking her, good luck
I took this class cause my friend was taking it too, big mistake. I knew I should have stuck with Gulacar. I cant stress how much this class has made me suffer. I learned more in a hour review session with Enderle, than this whole quarter with Duim. If that doesnt say anything to convince you to not take this class, I dont know what else will
Went on tangents and tried to squeeze in the lessons right before an exam, expecting us to master it immediately. If you want to pass CHE2B, take any other professor. I might have to retake this class now. She and Enderle will teach 2B again, but I am going to going to do every thing in my power to get Enderle because I will not last with her again
Tests are horrible and she doesnt teach well. I would give zero stars if I could. CHOOSE LITERALLY ANY PROFESSOR BUT HER!!!!
Everyone is bashing Duim because of their grades, but chem 2b is just a tough course. Dr. Duim was always eager to teach and gave excellent help. Shes super nice and you will not regret having her. Definitely would take her again!!
She has a structure to her lectures that she tries to follow but falls behind due to the sheer amount of content this course has. Honestly my only complaint would be that the midterm time limits were too short for the amount of work the questions ask, but she doesn't deserve the 1 star ratings. Your TAs are there to help you if you need it.
I do not get the hate for her. She is one of the sweetest professors I have had in my life. I am far from a chemistry natural and my test scores were not the greatest. Despite this, she was very helpful when I went to her OH and her lectures were very clear. Take her because you will not regret her. I struggled but I passed because she was good.
This is one of the hardest classes I've taken and I have also never received such low grades until now, however she was very adamant in helping us students understand the material. Her lectures were very straight forward and as long as you paid attention and followed along, it was somewhat easy to grasp the concepts. One of my nicest professors!
Dr. Duim does a great job in condensing complex chemistry materials into comprehensible lectures. Her exams are manageable if you study ahead of time. Because of online distance learning, she made homework/ lab worth a bit more so that they can balance out the three exam grades. She also has an adorable pupster; what more can I ask for?
Look Prof. Duim is a nice person, I agree with everyone. Shes really caring for her students, but thats about it. Her midterms are so hard because of the time constraint. I recommend a different professor if possible, she isnt the best choice if you really want to do well.
To be honest, I didn't do well in her class, but that wasn't a reflection of her teaching. She was able to get through a lot of the material given the time she has, and sometimes it was rushed, but if you go to her OH and ask questions, it was really not a problem. Her tests are difficult but if you study enough you will be prepared.
I honestly loved her class! Chem 2B is a hard class. However, she has SUCH clear lectures and straightforward breakdown of hard material. You have to read the book and study a lot, but that's college. Her exams were also a reasonable reflection of material if you do the weekly reading. Go to OH, develop a good study strategy, and you'll be fine.
Prof. Duim simply cannot teach Chemistry. Her tests and teaching style are so broken. Frustrating beyond belief. IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Its not about the rigortrust me. Chemistry is not hard if the teacher is competent. If you sign up for Duims class, you are signing up to fail. You have been warned.
I genuinely feel bad for anyone who took this class with Professor Duim. No more suffering in silence. We were all watching the same movie! This course was a mess from start to finish. Low averages on midterms too. Days before the final, she gave a mass announcement insisting that we can just late drop if we were struggling. TERRIBLE TEACHER!
I personally really liked Duim as a prof and as a person in general. Felt as if her tests were fair, ad long as you took notes and practiced the exams she made available. Her first test had a strict time limit which threw many people off, but she listened to us and gave us more time. A little underprep. for the final, but a solid choice still.
Tough class but her expectations weren't overly clear most of the time. Very nice and caring but nice doesn't get you the grade. Would give a 3/5, but giving a 2 because she had trouble answering/explaining her own examples. Take this class with another professor if you can.
Duim is a decent teacher who explains topics well but she is not the best at spacing her time. Her tests sometimes don't cover what she talks about making them hard. She is super accesible when it comes to office hours and asking questions.
Overall the class was okay. I liked the organization of Dr. Duim's lectures and appreciated her clear notes that she provided ahead of time. However, I felt the tests had so much material on them with so little time that they largely just tested your luck of guessing a multiple choice question correctly, rather than your actual chem knowledge.
Before this quarter, I was worried since the rating of this professor is slightly lower than other professors. Now, I feel really lucky to learn chemistry from her! She spent lots of time answering after class and her lectures are clear and organized. TAKE HER CLASS!!!!!!
The professor offers lots of examples in the lecture, which takes up a lot of time so some concepts are not given enough time to be well explained. Tests were hard, but enough resources are offered to prepare.
Dr. Duim is a good professor. She provides a lot of examples during her lectures and always stayed after to answer questions. She was very accessible outside of class in OH. You can tell she cares for her students and their feedback. Her exams were challenging but fair.
Not the most exciting class in the world but it's general chemistry so I can't say much there. Dr. Duim goes over all the information really well and so I didn't have to do any readings for the class. The tests had a good mix of challenging and easy questions and there's enough time to complete them. Decent curve too. Overall a solid choice.
Duim only cares if you can complete a 40 min exam, not your knowledge of chemistry. The ratio of questions to time is impossible. She makes questions dependent of each other, so if you mess up one you're doomed for the rest. I haven't even finished the quarter yet, but I can already tell she doesn't care for the success of her students. A shame.
The fact that she makes homework, pre-labs, and post-labs due on the same day of our second midterm is absolutely insane and goes to show how she doesn't empathize with her students. The new online lab system was down and we're expected to complete all missing assignments in a laughable and ridiculous time frame.
TA's seem belittling to struggling students. You would think that if the midterm class average was 49%, the professor would see the errors in her teaching (but of course she'll blame students). She'll take 5-10 minutes to solve one problem and expects us to solve 25 in 40 minutes. This class isn't worth your struggling, seriously.
Happily sending students to SJA for small unintentional mistakes, that's all you need
does not care about students AT ALL and is not willing to help even during COVID/ online school. tests are insanely difficult with little time (think 10 multiple choice in 15 minutes and 2-3 long answer in 20). lectures don't cover a lot of material and she teaches ENTIRELY from Enderle's reader. do not take this class
Her thought process of helping students is "hmmm, let me set up a review session and solve problems that are NOT EVER going to appear on the exams. That'll rile them up!"
the day of the final she's making a 50 question worksheet due for all students where we must show work. Owl assignments aren't similar to test questions either, she always throws a curve ball for no reason.
Her lectures were clear and had a lot of example problems. Wrote out her notes and was available during office hours for questions. She was organized and taught based on Enderle's reader. However, she wasn't accomodating towards students. Wouldn't let me take an exam earlier because I was fasting and heard stories that she was rude towards others
Tough class but if you really want to succeed you will. Go to office hours and be in constant contact with your TA and you will do well. 2 midterms and Final with lab and homework.
Worst. teacher. I. have. ever. had. period. Oh my god. Lecturers are horrible and I learned nothing. Does not answer your questions, has the TAs answer them and they do a horrible job of doing so because she goes so fast during the lecture. I would giver a lower score than 1/5 if I could.
Was a pretty easy class for physical chemistry, and the final exam was extremely easy. She wasn't the best for helping us understand the material but the hw provided were helpful.
Her lectures go very fast, but I enjoyed the content and the way she outlines the material.
We only had quizzes and a final. She explains things clearly but there is a lot of info per lecture and difficult to stay engaged at times.
Dr Duim is a phenomenal teacher and I wish I had her for Che107AB because I might actually understand something. Watch all the lectures, do the practice, read the textbook as recommended, and study for quizzes. My biggest issue was with the TAs, they constantly were misgrading and refusing to fix misgrading, were unfair and worsened this class.
I would say Professor Duim's teaching methods are flawed. Most students I know who are in the class have said that they are confused or unclear about the concepts taught. Expect yourself to do A LOT of self-learning, you would have to review and relearn everything in your own time. Although she has a syllabus, she has a hard time sticking to it.
Have fun teaching yourself every concept with no helpful resources for exam prep She goes over 1 basic example in class and expects you to know how to solve completely different complex problems Way too little time for the number of questions on exams then continues lecture after exam
Professor Dium is a good knowledgeable lecturer & def doesn't deserve these 1 stars. Chemistry in general is a hard topic, so studying outside of class is obviously a must. The negative reviews simply shows that they did not study enough. She explains concepts well and gives many examples. Her exams difficulty and length is very fair. Just study..
bro please save yourself while you have time she has 3 midterms and a final and she dont even curve the tests bruh
Dr. Duim would be a great professor if it weren't for the workload. Her lectures are easy to understand and she gives a lot of example questions, but we cover material very quickly. She gives 3 midterms and its very difficult to prepare in time. They cover a lot of material in a short amount of time and the curve is limited.
I like her better than Enderle because it's actually possible to get an A on her tests. She does go fast and it's easier if you have some background knowledge, but she reviews the content of the previous lecture in the following one to solidify your understanding. If you work hard and use the resources, it is possible to get an A.
she probably wants us to die
Prof Duim has 3 midterms which gives you only about 2 weeks to study for each one. Next she does not give ANY practice questions. For the last midterm she sent out 2 practice exams with only 2 QUESTIONS actually relevant to the material. On top of that the curve is not nearly as generous as the other profs. Extremely unfair situation.
"So as you can see these are degenerate orbitals" No you're the degenerate. Woman cannot teach. Be prepared to spend 4-5 hours a day studying. Lectures are useless. Claims she is receptive to constructive criticism but proceeds to gaslight herself thinking she's doing good. Offers little very practice and gatekeeps curves/ # of Q's for midterms.
Honestly, Duim isn't that bad. She doesn't have much practice exams because she's barely started teaching this course. The average for the midterms are usually high, so her curves aren't generous, but her exams are manageable if you study and go to OH. Her lectures are quick and easy to follow along. Bad thing was the lectures were at 7:30 am.
duim is not bad at all. she is a very dry lecturer, but everything that she teaches is actually on the exam. the exam material is very predictable & very possible to get 100 on. she does a small review of the last lecture before each lecture which is nice. shes not at all as bad as many people make her seem. "easy" exams=high averages=bad curve
The test grade has almost no curve because it uses standard deviation, the mean is C+. It means you can get a C even if you get nearly 80 on the test. The test with no practice exam The OWL and discussion questions are not related to the midterm. She has 3 midterms in one quarter, which means you only have 2 weeks before the next test. RUN!!!
She is not bad as she is rated. Her course design doesn't set you up for failure. There are 3 midterms but that means more opportunity to fixed you grade and less material per midterm. Plus that means the final isn't worth as much. Only concerns are that I had the 2 times a week 1.5 hr lectures at 7 am. But thats not really the professor's problem.
Professor Duim is not as bad of a professor as she is rated. She cares about her students and wants to help them, however a lot of people don't take advantage of her office hours, lectures, and practice questions in class. I like the 3 midterms because it means each was only 18% with the final 22%, less pressure on each exam.
tbh she wasn't bad. i was scared to take her bc of the bad ratings but i rlly liked her. the class was hard, but her lectures were rlly easy to follow and she was very helpful if you had any questions to ask. her TAs are so bad tho, mine was not organized and never came to class on time. other than that you'll succeed if u do hw and discussion ws!
I really enjoyed professor Dium's lectures and found them extremely useful. I also think that her exams are fair and more conceptual based (which means just memorize the lecture slides). However, she did not go in depth with her material which made taking the final very difficult.
Run away from her course! Little even no curve! The curve is really stupid!!!! And her courses is stupid and boring and pointless I did not learn any thing from her lol (I get A+ in CHE002A but only get an A- in her 2B courses) she even do not give us many practice exam and some of the question she test is new for you!
Professor Duim was overall a pretty good lecturer. The lectures were clear and concise and the content did match the midterms so there were no surprises. However, there were 3 midterms, which meant that because you had a midterm literally every 2 weeks, you were ALWAYS studying chemistry so your other classes were forced to be on the side.
Please do yourself a favor and dont take her. She lied the whole quarter about the curve, gave no practice material and when the quarter ended she didnt give us a curve at all. The percentage you got was the letter grade you got. She is so bad I would recommend waiting to take chem 2b till the following quarter with another prof. Ruins GPA.
She has 3 midterms giving you barely anytime to study for them. She says there is a curve but there isnt. Which means in order to get an A in the class or even a B you need to be getting above an 85% raw score on each exam. Even if the average for an exam is in the 60s there will not be a curve.
Teaching during lecture is average, but if you're willing to put in the hours to learn outside of lectures and use prep material you'll do good on exams. Fast paced and no prep for the final. TA was nice but absolutely HORRIBLE at chemistry, so taking Duim kind of sets you up for failure if you're not someone who has some natural affinity for chem
I was honestly really scared to have this professor for chem since her reviews were absolutely atrocious, but I can attest that such negative reviews were unwarranted. It's a STEM class, so don't expect her to just spoon-feed you all of the answers. If you want to get an A in the class, attend lectures and office hours. Her expectations are fair.
Terrible teacher compared to other 2B teachers, WITCH, if you have other options on teachers take them, she barely curves compared to other teachers and her lectures do not help at all so have fun learning it on your own
If you value your sanity, don't take this class with her. I have never been more frustrated with another human being in my entire life. Chem is a hard subject and no prof at Davis will make it easy for you, but at least other professors give you resources. I honestly would have been better off skipping a quarter of chem and waiting for another prof
Duim doesn't accentuate important info + likes asking conceptual questions on midterms. If you don't naturally understand chem (aka me) the only way to do well is to attend EVERY office hour (even with no questions yet) and rewatch ALL lectures. Curve is awful because the midterms are reasonable. I think the curve for this quarter is less than 5%.
Don't expect a huge curve. Pay attention during lectures because she doesn't have many practice exams for CHE 2B since she is newer to teaching it. But 100% go over the lecture slides and OWL homework because sometimes she uses similar questions.
The class was difficult with a very small curve because test medians were high, but not high enough to feel safe about your grade. All chem profs had no - grades except her, and she gave two problems(vs. a test) for practice before midterms and didn't give final grade cutoffs so you have to hope your grade was curved enough to make a difference.
I agree with what the bro said: save your life and run away from duim.
Harsh curve
As a straight-A student last quarter, I work so hard and receive no curve at all in this class. I finally got B+. I would say run away from this professor.
the curve is definitely, completely, absolutely unreasonable!!!!!!!! everytime got a higher score than average but still only a B grade, and the tests are sooooo difficult!!!! very different from practice exam and there would be some weird questions that never mentioned.
zero curve and she lied about the fact that there would be a curve. She is literally ruining peoples gpa. No practice exams before each midterm. Stay far far away from her. The course syllabus says that the class would be graded on a curve, and yet there was no curve. I find it strange that other classes have a curve but her chem 2b class doesnt.
Professor Duim explained the material clearly, using analogies when appropriate. She is friendly, approachable, and receptive to feedback. She encourages questions in class and office hours. She is a strong proponent of the growth mindset and clearly cares for her students' wellbeing. Chemistry is no easy subject, but Duim is a good professor.
Prof Duim's midterms are fairly easy, almost too easy. The final, written by Enderle, will kick your grade down a level or two if you get complacent with how straightforward her midterms are. With that being said, if you prep for the final with Enderle's materials/reader, it isn't difficult to pass the class.
Duim was an awesome professor! Her lectures were written on her iPad really clearly. Her tests are on covered material, so very predictable and doable. She recorded lectures and posted notes after class! She DOES curve, but if the class scores 70% on average, then the curve won't be big...not her fault. She had helpful models in office hours.
Very sweet professor, did a lot of extra work to help support students. The class overall was difficult, but that is to be expected with a chem class, she actually made it easier to learn. Homework was distributed well throughout the quarter, and were good supplements for lecture.
First off the majority of the people who are writing reviews are mad because there was a very small curve, when all of her midterms had a 70% average which is a C. She was extremely caring and nice to all her students. Her lectures were straightforward and posted 2 hours after class for review. Truly an amazing teacher and I would take her again.
Those of you who got an A or a five stop your nonsense talk, you just learned about it in high school or something, so it's easy for you. In fact, she is very strict for those who have not studied chemistry.
Practically no curve at all, tests are always significantly harder than practice exams. Will not agree to meet with you outside of class and is not helpful in office hours. Doesn't make an effort to get to know her students.
Horrible- does not help students
She was okay. Professor Duim did review sessions at the beginning of each of her lectures with iclicker and her teaching style isn't that bad. I will say, her tests aren't terribly hard, but they can easily confuse you. It really was a meh sort of class. You really can't love or hate her.
These rly low ratings are overexaggerating since some were her 1st 2B class, she is a decent Chem prof. Notes are disorganized, but covers the material. Was hard, but hw and practice tests helps. Gives few practice tests which is hard to evaluate your understanding, but are close to the actual tests. Like any course, you will need to self teach.
Duim is one of the best chem 2 professors in Davis! I really appreciate her clear and thorough lectures along with her fair exams. She provides study material before each exam and really wants her students to succeed! I highly recommend Duim for chemistry! Only note that students may not like is that her curves are not super big compared to others.
Her lectures aren't the best since she tends to go a bit fast, but she does record them which is my preferred method of viewing so I can go at my own pace. The tests were pretty fair, not too difficult. Not a lot of HW, and the HW could be better, a lot of scenario repeats on OWL. Finally, she organizes her canvas well, overall solid professor.
Took Che 002B in spring quarter. Reading the reviews from winter, it seems like she has improved a lot. She gave us practice tests which were relatively similar to the actual exams. She is a decent lecturer too. Overall, an okay class, should not bee too difficult to pass or even get a B if you study.
Took CHE 107B. Biweekly quizzes instead of midterms, with very straightforward questions that sometimes were identical to homework problems. The textbook was only required for HW problems, with the HW itself being very short. Final was extremely similar to the quizzes and also easy and fair. Duim is a very clear lecturer.
overall she was good nothing too amazing but nothing awful either. gets straight to the point but you definitely have to go over notes or rewatch lectures on your own time to fully understand. homework was easy for the most part, not too hard tests either. she's average but super nice!
I actually really like Professor Duim. The workload was reasonable, the practice exams mimicked the midterms, and her office hours were very helpful. There is little to no curve which isn't ideal, but if you study and work hard, it shouldn't effect you at all.
Overall, Duim's lectures were nothing special. The class was very lecture-heavy, and at some times there could be confusion which is the nature of the course. Her midterms were very fair, but the final was definitely not. It was supposed to be made in collaboration with all the chem 2B professors, but the content is very different from the midterms
She's not the best, but definitely manageable to pass the class. People say she doesn't have a curve, she does though, it's just not that big. I ended the class with a solid B with a 79.14%. Beware though, the final will most definitely hurt your grade.
I loved Professor Duim. These other reviews are ridiculous and untruthful. I have never taken more fair exams in my life. They perfectly reflect the material, and you will never see anything you have never seen before, same went for the final. Prof. Duim has clear and concise slides and makes learning chemistry a breeze. I recommend her 100%
Class isnt as bad as her other reviews say. There are 3 midterms which surprisingly was beneficial. her midterms are very straightforward, reflect exactly what she teaches, but the final is HORRENDOUS! Nothing like the other exams. She gives little to no curve. I had raw score of 73 and she gave me a C on registrar so curve did not impact me.
Her lectures are very clear and straightforward. She uses slides and does a lot of example questions in class which are really helpful to understand the context. She gave us 3 midterms each 18% and 1 final 22%, The midterms were not too bad as long as you study the practice exams. The final was HARD but it's cuz it's not her own exams.
Duim's lectures I found to be very clear and concise, but her tests were MUCH HARDER than her examples. Everything that you learn from her, take it and times the complexity by 2. I would only take her if one of the better professors isn't available. Explore your options people!!!
She ight
I'm not a huge fan of Professor Duim. I took her course last Winter Quarter. She's okay, but I didn't really see that she made a lot of effort to connect with her students. Tests were also difficult, but if you study (and I did not do that nearly well enough) you will be fine. Her course is a good backup if you can't get a better professor.
Really caring professor. I really struggled in chem but she was so kind and helped me when I had health problems and worked with me after I couldn't take a NP/incomplete spring quarter of last year. Thanks Dr. Duim, you're the best! Go to office hours! :) You can do it!
The most cruel thing she did was lecture after our midterm. You could leave though since everything was recorded. There were 3 midterms, lab, homework, and a final. I thought her class was fair since every question on the midterm had a lecture that corresponded with it. There were definitely no tricks but she did lecture fast.
I don't understand why there is so many negative reviews. The pro does very well in organizing and teaching. The content is hard, but the pro is not, while it is true that there is barely curves.
Lots of people seemed to do well in her class but the lecture and quiz styles were not for me. Practice problems also never seemed to line up all the way with the material that was taught and no equations were provided on tests though you do get a cheatsheet. Still did well though so can't really complain all that much.
We have 3 midterms and an final in the end plus first midterm avg score was 45%. It was too long, and we had only 50 mins for it. Only mock exam was the best you could look at to have an idea of what to expect. Most people still haven't finished the first homework she assigned cuz it's not dated on canvas.
Run!! She wasted her lecture time, so clever as her, finding a solution which is pre class lectures to compensate the fact that she can never finish her lectures.(this occupied students' time). She is bad at explaining things, she made people confusing. Her midterms are much harder than practice exams. She made mistakes in midterm1 question.
Her lecture structure and format was easy to understand and was very well organized. It is midterm heavy, but they generally reflect the practise exams that she provides. As a professor she is passionate about the course and is very helpful in office hours. The textbook is not used much, but it can be useful to help reinforce certain concepts.
chemistry is hard so i think thats where a few of these negative reviews come from. midterm heavy for sure but its 2 chapters each so v. doable, makes final have less weight. i really like her, her slides help me once I go back and look at it in my own pace and process info. homework is additional help. prac tests usually give u a hint ab midterms.
She's good when she actually explains things but for a lot of the major concepts, she really just didn't give them enough time. Rushed through an explanation into practice problems. Practice problems are really helpful, but only if you know what's going on. Three midterms was a lot, but the homework & practice exams prepare you well.
she's an alright professor. Her lectures were definitely too fast for me so I had to go back and go thru the recordings after class. 3 midterms, including one on week 9 was a lot but it removes some weight from the final so I get why it was done that way. Overall, she is a good option if you can't get one of the better rated profs.
I liked her. Definitely could've explained more about some concepts in lectures but overall still a good lecturer. MCQs on exams are harder than the FRQs because the practice exams' FRQs mirror the actual FRQs pretty well. 3 midterms generally helped peoples grades and a final worth only slightly more than a midterm helped reduce stress.
Prof Duim is a good professor who cares alot about her students. The slides are organized and the practice exam material she gave us is super helpful to succeed. There are no tricky/confusing questions on the exams. Standard Curve. She could improve on her pacing though. At the end, we basically covered a full chapter in one 50 minute lecture.
She had a pretty rough start as our MT1 averages were in the mid 40s range. But the tests became fairer as time went on. 3 midterms which ended up being beneficial as it lowered the final weight. Lectures were straight to the point. Curve was solid, but not very life changing (due to higher averages). Take her if you are looking for backups.
She's a good professor! Do the homework and the practice exams and you can pass the midterms! Go to her office hours too.
Good prof, but lectures fast. Slides are comprehensive and practice tests are similar to real tests. There were 3 noncumulative midterms and a cumulative final. First midterm had a 47% average, but later midterms had averages in the 60s, resulting in a decent curve. OWL homework and discussion was also helpful for learning.
There were three midterms and a final, but it was nice because each weighed less. Good lectures but doesn't take a lot of time to answer questions. The study guides were similar to the tests, so as long as you complete those, you're good to go. Watch out for at least one trick question on each test though.
Class consists of 5 quizzes, 1 dropped and 1 final quiz worth 30%. Gives a strict time limit of 25 minutes per quiz which involves free-response calculations and usually 5 multiple choice questions which is not enough time. Can also be quite rude in office hours and is obsessed with people cheating in her class. Avoid her.
Duim is a fair professor. Her lectures are okay, but quizzes are fair and questions are usually pulled from the textbook/in class problems. The class is 5 quizzes and a final, with one quiz dropped.
Pretty easy class. She has 1 final, 5 quizzes with 1 drop, standard drug project that no one should get less than 100 on. Homework was easy too. She allows notecards on her quizzes and exams so you literally should not be failing when you basically have the answer in front of you. The median in the class is literally above a 90. Learned a lot too.
Dr. Duim is an amazing professor and given the nature of this class, I could not have asked for anyone better. She cares about your education, makes you feel comfortable when puzzled, and is very understanding. All lectures and recorded and slides are thoroughly made and posted. Study the material well and go to office hours and you will do well!
Awesome professor! Your grade is based on weekly online quizzes, homework, chapter quizzes, and a final exam. She drops the lowest quiz, and you can use a cheat sheet. The content is straightforward, but you must review it weekly to succeed. An A is achievable.
Dr. Duim is an amazing professor. Her lectures are very organized, is very clear on what she expects the students to know, her practice exams and review questions at the start of every lecture prepare you well for the quizzes. Highly recommend!
The material is pretty dense but Duim presents it in a very clear manner. She's super accessible outside of class and as long as you keep up with assignment deadlines and take advantage of the practice she gives, it's pretty impossible to do poorly in her class. She also allows cheatsheets, which really helped with the density of the material!
I really like Prof. Duim. The content of CHE 2B is dense and she does have to cram a lot into her lectures, but content is clearly outlined, plenty of extra resources are available, and she's very accessible outside of class. She clearly cares about her students as well. Definitely one of the better chem profs.
I don't know why Duim is rated so low, she is a very good professor and her tests are pretty straight forward. Even though her attendance isn't mandatory, if you show up for the lecture, I'm sure you'll have no trouble understanding the material. AMAZING professor! Very helpful too!!
well-structured lectures, iclicker not graded, 3 midterms, somewhat fast pace in lecture but good explanation check recording to complete your notes, homework on OWL2, 1 practice exam posted before each mid, exam EXTREMELY similar to practice so just do it, there's 2 point wrapper for mid1
Professor Duim's Lecture's are very dense, and often fast paced, so you will often have to review videos to complete notes. It's best to do the practice exams as the practice exams and midterms are very similar. Her lectures are straight forward, and her way of using examples makes it very easy to understand difficult to grasp concepts.
Professor Duim is a kind professor who is helpful inside and outside class! The lectures are well-organized and there is IClicker participation, but it is not mandatory. Despite there being 3 midterms, the practice exams are comparable to actual test material. There was also an exam wrapper for MT1, which was a good extra credit opportunity.
I enjoyed Professor Duim's class. Lectures were clear and practice problems were helpful. I appreciated her dedication to following up in an email or the next lecture with answers to questions she couldn't answer in class. We spent a lot of time on the first half of the content, so the last couple of chapters were rushed.
I had Hayashi for 2A and found her teaching to be similar. Her lectures were concise and easy to understand, but they were quick. We had three midterms and one final (to reduce the weight of the final), and all were doable. She rushed the last two chapters but provided extra resources to study for them. Overall, I recommend her!
Best professor! love her, people that give her bad ratings got a bad grade in her class. Attend lecture and do the homework and you'll be good.
Dr. Duim is a truly inspiring professor. It's an honor for me to have her this quarter. She tries to explain everything and answers all of the questions. Her lecture is well-organized and she is accessible outside of class as well. The midterms is the same as practice, which should not be a problem if you study. Just the final.
i was preparing for the worst because of the reviews but she is lowk fine. i think there were some concepts she could have explained better bc i had to self study for some of them. but other than that her exams are SO similar to the practice exams. the final was rlly hard because her exams were easier and the final was all enderle basically
Duim gives excellent lectures and explains the material in a way that was easy for me to understand. Three midterms, but the content is divided nicely and the practice exams are VERY close to what you will see on the exams. This also makes the final weigh less, which is nice because it is pretty difficult. Don't be scared off by the bad reviews!
I've always hated chemistry as a class, just as I thought I couldn't hate it more, I was proven wrong. Prof Duim is a good person and lecturer, her curve sucks though. If you are taking Duim just remember her practice tests are not similar to her exams at all ,no curve ,and she doesn't put up Enderle's reader, you are better off with any other Prof.
An overall good prof. Giving great lecture, while the lecture may be a bit slow and the prof spend too much time reviewing which we need to catch up at the later part of the quarter. Giving easy midterms and the practice test is similar to the mts. However, the three midterm is a bit stressing.
I loved Professor Duim! Her lectures were super engaging, and I really appreciated that we actually discussed the content. Her practice tests were almost identical to the real exams, the homework was really helpful, and she was always happy to help during office hours. Overall, she's an amazing professor who made me enjoy chemistry!
Very nice professor. Lectures were easy to follow and she went through examples in detail. Gave 3 midterms instead of 2, but that made each one worth less and they covered less material. She gave a practice test for each exam and it was similar to actual test. Homework very helpful. Overall a very good chemistry professor, it's just a hard subject.
Exams are not too hard; clear lectures
Her lectures are really good and easy to take notes on. Three midterms, but I personally like that because each one is on less material. Our first one was on one unit. Midterms are very easy. Homework isn't bad. I liked her as a professor a lot.
Super clear lectures, organized class, lots of extra help and resources available. One of the best CHE 2 series professors imo. Gives clear study guides and practice midterms are very similar to the test. She does 3 midterms instead of 2 which could be a pro/con. Good test averages, great professor.
Definitely good at what she teaches. Class included 3 midterms instead of the usual 2 that other professors give, which allowed me to retain information quite well and perform great on each exam. She gave an "exam wrapper" that allowed us 2 extra points for one of our exams. I recommend using Enderle's reader to study for the final.
Prof Duim is an amazing professor who makes chemistry interesting and easier to understand. Don't listen to the bad reviews, she is amazing.
Prof. Duim gives great lectures, and her practice exams have similar structure to the real midterm and with answers included, which helps a lot. She is also pretty approachable and you should definitely go to her in-person office hour. Also the classes is with 3 midterms instead of 2, so they are more spread out and more schedule-friendly.
Very very sweet and educated. She cares about her job and her students. Lectures are very helpful, she does a lot of practice problem which are similar to what's on the test. She also gives good practice exams and tells you EXACTLY what will be on the exam. 100% recommend.
Professor Duim was a really great professor, her lectures were clear and informative and the exams were not terribly hard as long as you studied with the many resources she provided. She is very kind and you can tell she cares about her students and likes to teach.
Duim is super reasonable in her tests! Her tests are usually pretty similar to the practice tests. She does a pretty good job during lecture and genuinely cares about her students! The curve wasn't super good during my quarter, but honestly the tests were so reasonable that it wasn't needed.
nice professor.
She is a great professor with mom-energy that made learning 2B easier and more fun than other STEM classes I've taken at Davis. Not really an amazing class, but pretty good for chem, would take again. 3 midterms are rough but make the final worth less.
she is very nice and gives very clear lectures. She definitely deserves better than higher 3.
She's ight.
currently have a 68% in the class. i failed the first two midterms but got higher then average on the 3rd midterm. average was failing for first midterm i think. hopefully the final doesn't drop my grade because i've been doing close to average. she is really really sweet though, feel like i can talk to her about anything.
I'm not great at chemistry, so this class was especially tough even though I tried. Do all the homework and discussion worksheets. Practice exams aren't very similar to the real midterms—multiple choice is different, and short answers, while similar in format, are much harder. It's discouraging when the class average is 40–45/60.

It's ridiculous that her rating is not at least a 4. Prof Duim is such a caring professor. She is very clear in lecture, always open to questions, and makes the material very manageable (Chem 2b is pretty abstract). Exams always very similar to the practice exams. I just had the final and I think the Duim section was the most prepared. She is great
OK professor not the best but just average. I heard from other people before me that there is barely a curve. I personally had to do my own studying I could not understand material in lectures. 3 midterms. Hard final and everything just felt rushed at the end. Lots of Homework (one assignment on owl had 32 parts to it 3 questions on each part).
She really is great and only gets bad reviews because she gives 3 midterms instead of 2. She cares about students and is the only reason I passed this class.
Her lectures were very organized but felt quick at times. I can tell shes been perfecting her curriculum for a long time. She is caring and she cared about answering questions and helping us understand. There were three midterms and a final, so it felt fast paced. I liked how she posted the plan for the week / semester. Lots of textbook reading.
Prof Duim is one of the better chem teachers at Davis, her lectures were great with a nice mix of definitions & practice problems that actually helped me understand the material. I felt well prepared for the free response of exams but the mult choice was hard. She only provided 1 practice test for each but the disc worksheets were good for studying
Absolutely terrible curve, might as well have said in the syllabus that there isn't going to be a curve. Otherwise solid professor but completely robbed of a curve.
Having taken Hayashi for 2A, it is harder to get high scores on Duim's exams--her tests are out of 60-70 points and her MCQs were really tricky. She goes pretty fast in lecture, so if you should lecture prep by reading the textbook beforehand. Prof is super caring and always willing to pause lecture to answer any questions.
Very organized digestible lectures. I bombed the first midterm (literally below the average), but the exam wrapper helped me gain a few points back and helped me realize how I had to adjust my study habits. She is everything an educator should be. It made me really happy to see her show us her photo with a capybara. Not sure why her rating is mid
Had Farahat for 2A so Duim is a much clearer lecturer and more engaging. Content was more abstract than 2A so midterms weren't too difficult but her curve was confusing on the syllabus and didn't tell us what it would be "until end of quarter" (not a big curve). LAQs on practice exams were literally the same (switched numbers) on midterms and final
She really made chemistry fun for me. CHE002A was hard, so I was nervous going into it, but she was lovely. She really cares about the class and wants you to succeed. There are 3 exams plus the final, but there is less stress percentage wise on each exams. Her lectures were great, but they are slides heavy.
Wonderful professor, the material moves fast but her organization really helps to stay on top of it, for midterms and the finals do the practice midterms and review owl homework's and you should be fine! She is a very caring professor who wants you to succeed !
Let me state that Duim is a caring professor and she wants every student succeed. However, her tests are diabolical imo. The MCQs are harder than the long answer portion and worded very poorly. Additionally they have huge weight to them, so if you get a few wrong it can completely bomb your score. She is great, her tests are not.
Very good professor who's approachable and cares about the success of her students! Straightforward, simple teaching style w/ lots of resources for the exams. Practice midterms are basically identical to the actual exams. My main gripe is her weak curve and how she rushed through the most important content of the final exam. Great prof overall.
If I could take all of my chem classes with one professor, it would be with Professor Duim. Her lectures are well structured, and she fits in time for practice problems to let you try independently before going over them during lecture. Before exams, she gave the percentages of each unit on the exam, and what problems you can practice.
Uses Iclicker to engage students by using questions related to what you just learned, very much a stickler about significant figures in midterms and final when grading. She's very interested in the concept of learning and understanding and will try her best to explain quantum chemistry to you. Much of her content is memorization.
She explained concepts well, and the example questions she did during class were very helpful. The pre-lecture videos were always short, and she always went over them during the lecture. Practice midterms were also very helpful. Sometimes the homework was a bit much, but if you start early, you should be fine.
Duim is an amazing professor. She plans lectures very well, and everything she puts into the exams are either from the lecture or practice exams. Be prepared to study lots, but just know that you're off to a good start with Duim!
