I am part of Prof. Tholen's first class she's ever taught. You could say in a way we are her "test subjects" and subjected we've been. Subject to a barrage of test questions almost completely unrelated to her lecture curriculum. You will pass if you depend 90% on the book and the rest on her power points as a small summary/outline of the chapter.
I have never made a B in a college class. Have had a 4.0 for over four years. I made a 95 on the first exam in this course, and a 78 on the next. This is THE WORST professor I have EVER had. DO NOT TAKE HER. She doesnt care about you and wont even reply to emails. No curves, no extra credit, and NO HELP. No reviews, no homework, nothing. Horrible
My classmates and I have tried to talk to her a million times and she refuses to do anything to help us. She reads off PowerPoint slides, incorrectly half the time, and then her exams are EXTREMELY difficult and nothing like the slides. She does not prepare you. Reading the book and memorizing her slides will do nothing. Your 4.0 will be gone.
Dr. Tholen is one of the worst professors I have ever had! Her lectures consists of her reading of the power points, and student correcting her because what she says doesnt make sense. Your technically on your own, she doesnt provide any type of help or seems to care honestly. I would not take her, find somewhere else to take micro!!
I'm in her first class teaching here and the experience has been the worst of all the sciences I've taken so far. She only reads the powerpoints and oftentimes gives us incorrect information. She does not correct herself until someone points it out to her. All I have to thank her for is ruining my 4.0 the semester of applying to nursing school.
Honestly, the tests are all based off of her slides. I didn't use the book at all either, it had more information than what we needed to know. This class is all about repetition and memorization & if you can do that, you'll be fine. She isn't very helpful or good at lecturing, but it's not her job to be super lenient and fix everyone's mistakes.
Not quite sure how people did so poorly in this class, but there were people that DID do well. I did bad on the very first test, but after going to tutoring, creating a study group, and constantly testing myself and others, I did good in the end. Have some confidence:) Still wish she wasn't the professor, but you have to suck it up or do it online.
Dr. Tholen is easily the worst professor I have had here at UTA. She clearly had no idea what she was talking about; she would contradict the book, her slides, and herself several times per lecture. Any question from a student quicky "derailed" her and she would struggle to answer even the most basic questions.
the tests are 50 questions 10 t/f. to do well you have to really know the terms well, and be able to compare and contrast. lab really does help in boosting your grade, so prepare for the quizzes with time those are pretty straightforward, and its helpful to go into open lab and practice for the practicals. make sure you try on lab paper.
Professor reads off slides. Cant answer questions in lecture and office hours. Seems like she doesnt care as she approaches everything with a whatever kind of attitude. Doesnt want feedback from students when students voice concerns (strange for a first time professor).
Yes she is new to teaching, I was in the first class she taught. She had difficulty answering Qs and read directly from the slides. Not the best but only cause shes new. Still, I didnt think this class was hard. All I did to prep for exams was study from her slides, and focus in lab. Personally, i think A&P I/II is 'harder' than her micro class
Dr. Tholen was easily one of my favorite professors. I was an undergrad TA for her for two semesters, and it was hands down the best experience I had at UTA. I gained more useful skills and information working with her than any other class, not to mention she is crazy smart and always happy to help her students. Couldn't recommend her more!
Easy class. Nice as a person, but not a great prof. Lectures were mostly reading off the ppt, tho sometimes she points out what to study & what to ignore which was helpful. You need to study the ppt and read the book on your own. She had many inconsistencies between ppt and book - raise your hand and point them out. 4 tests+optional final+lab(easy)
Her PowerPoints have errors, the book is your best bet. Dont bother asking questions she probably wont answer them correctly and/or get upset. You dont even have to go to lecture as long as you read because all she does is read off her slides. Fight for your grade, if you know there is an error on the exam, her ppts, etc go to office hours!!
This class was NOT hard! It's microbio so yea you're going to have to study and memorize some things but she is very clear in what she expects from you. I only used the PPTs and studied the end of chapter questions and got A's on all of the exams. I think people saw her bad rating and just gave up before the class even started. Study, youll be fine
Don't be afraid of the reviews! She was a great professor and the class was great also. Just read the powerpoints and study the end of chapter questions as well as read through the book (if you have time) if not at least skim through it and you'll make an A.
Only showed up about 3 times for class throughout the whole semester and I passed with a B. You're still going to need to study a lot on your own even if you go to class according to other people who took the class. It's doable, just make sure you focus on the end of chapter questions. Also study her ppts and reference the book for more details.
Dr. Tholen is simply amazing!! I have totally enjoyed this class and all the things I have learned from it. I visited her after every exam and she took time to answer all my questions, she was always there to help us. If she taught all the Bio classes i would take all of them. She is clear of whats needed at the beginning, highty recommend her!!
Dr. Tholen is very nice and I enjoyed having her as a professor. My one complaint is that some of her power points have errors in them that can be confusing, but she usually caught the mistakes as we were going through it.
Great Professor! Must study along with PPT and read the book for an A. Lab only 20% of grade but a very easy. Should be 25% IMO. She is very nice and inviting during office hours. Memorize the after section MC questions for each chapter since she uses some of those exact same questions on the test. Curves are sometimes given. Would take again!
Dr. Tholen is a great teacher! She teaches really well by further explaining concepts to make it understandable and uses lots of emphasis throughout each lecture. I would definitely take her again shes too sweet. Just do your part and study, read the textbook, ask questions and go to office hours and youll do great. Shes also very understanding!
Micro wasn't bad at all! Tholen was pretty chill and helpful. Tests were not hard if you studied her ppts. Reading the book wasn't that bad at all and it was free if you used the online book. Definitely not the most boring textbook, but there is a lot of extra information in it. I thought Micro was a lot easier than the A&Ps
Dr. Tholen is really kind and the class is not too difficult. Be prepared for lab though, plenty of work. She provides extra credit opportunities, up to 5% on your total grade. I would take again!
Dr. Tholen is a really kind person. Her lectures are deceptively simple, as the exams are much harder than the information she simply provides in her power points. With that being said, she allows extra credit assignment allowing up to 5 points added on to your final grade. So you can make as low as an 85 in the class and still make an A!
Dr. Tholen is really nice & has easy lectures, but thats it. Her ppts dont reflect the test material, so you have to do a lot of extra studying from the book. Shes not a good teacher, she just reads straight off the ppt. Shes terrible at responding to messages, it took a week for her to respond by which it was too late to resolve my problem.
For Nursing Majors, this is a big chance for you to get an A and easily change your rate of acceptance into nursing school. She has echos, the back of the book she takes questions from and her lectures are the ONLY thing tested on (meaning you can skip stuff not mentioned in the ppts.) Lab will boost your grade, and she provides exam extra credit.
It's not as bad as people make it out to seem. There's an optional final if you like your grade, extra credit (up to 5 overall points), and lab is easy as long as you do your part- boosting up your grade. She DOES tell you to memorize more than what you need but I rarely read the book (only when i didnt understand the material) & got A's on exams.
Dr. Tholen is sweet but a little inexperienced. The tests are often not related to her lectures and you must study pretty hard. On the bright side, gives up to 5 points in extra credit added on to your final grade!
Dr Tholen is a nice person but she is not a good lab instructor. She is not really caring for her students and grades every assignment so hard. She took months to grade and did not put in grades until the course is over. Her presentations were boring too and she made you feel stupid if you have questions. Overall, I didn't enjoy taking her
I consider this class quite easy and fun if I didn't take Dr. Tholen. She didn't help me much, so I mostly study from my peers and myself. She missed graded me a lot and barely reply to my email. If you want to get good grade with Dr. Tholen, be her good friend. If you don't wanna make friend with her, choose other person for a better grade.
4 exams, then an optional final. She's not a morning person so if you pick 8am it will be 8:30 except on exam days which DO start at 8am. She is the lab coordinator so availability outside of class is slim. Our final was literally the day after classes were suppose to be done whereas other classes were the following week. Class not mandatory.
Do not just rely on her lectures or powerpoints for the exams. You MUST read the textbook as well because during lectures, she only reads over her powerpoints which contain basic/general information. Lab is very easy, I got an A+, just do all your assignments on time and know the material for the quizzes, but the experiments are super fun!
Dr. Tholen isnt as bad as everyone makes her seem. I took lecture notes and textbook notes and I passed with an A. Also do not neglect studying for lab because it really does help boost your average.
Professor Tholen is easier than people make her out to be. My recommendation: Study the power points and take her notes and add on to them from the textbook. I made an A+ in the class considering you can earn up to 5 points on to your final grade! One of the easiest courses of the natural sciences courses required by UTA's nursing program!
2nd exam is significantly harder than the 1st. If you answer a question based off whats in the PowerPoint and miss it, SHE WILL NOT GIVE YOU THOSE POINTS. Even if its in her PowerPoint word for word. I just cant give it to you. She doesnt even care about students she sees trying their best. Read the textbook AND study the PowerPoint for an A.
Bad professor who teaches at a high level and tests on very detailed information. Gives no indication on what to focus on for exams so the only people who do well are the ones who cheat by getting info from other students who have already taken the class. Doesn't care about her students.
Terrible lecturer, she reads straight off long slides without adding new info on side. There is no point in attending class. She doesn't respond to emails and sometimes forgets to post class quizzes during the preassigned time frame, wasting everyones time. Take any other professor if given the option. The lab section is easy with little effort.
She isnt very good at explaining key concepts and relies heavily on the textbook and slides. Simple questions would lead to Im not sure and her lectures arent very exciting to say the least because its just her regurgitating whats on the slide. I took this course during covid 19 and I could tell you a lot more about her shortcomings/no space
Lecturereading off slides. Lectures could have been more exciting since micro is actually an interesting class. Never attended class. Opportunity to get 5 points added to final grade through quizzes. Not too bad but tests are detailed. Know ppt and end of chap questions and u should be fine. No need to read textbook. Not as bad as ppl say.
Lectures are pointless to attend. Just read and study on your own. She uses a test bank for the tests so just look online to prepare for tests. She messes up a lot and gets tripped up on questions. Sometimes its like she doesnt even know what shes talking about
I never attended lectures for this class and only used the textbook and her power points to study for exams. Not a very difficult class, and lab is super easy! There is also extra credit which is up to 5 points added to your overall grade! Her lectures weren't very informative so I saw no point in attending them, but the textbook is very helpful!
Dr. Tholen is a great teacher! Not only is she funny, really nice, & understanding, but she makes class fun to learn about and very enjoyable, while including relevant topics in the field of microbiology. I would absolutely take her class again!
Horrible. She couldn't even keep her slides in order. Tests had details from books and her slides were practically blank. Took this during COVID and I had to go to lab almost 5 times a week even with high risk family - she told me to drop the class if I couldn't. SO much memorization
Dr. Tholen is really nice, and overall I think that she is a good professor. She is a bit scatterbrained at times, but I think she just has a lot on her plate. She cares about her students, and her tests aren't hard, at least during COVID. The only thing she isn't that great at is responding to emails in a timely manner.
Dr. Tholen is a really nice and great professor. The class itself is easy, as long as you make sure to read the textbook and watch/attend her lectures, you'll be fine. The textbook is from OpenStax so you don't need to buy one. The tests were open book during COVID but with Lockdown and there was extra credit available that was due before the exams
Great professor, easy to understand, and easily accessible outside of class. Read the book from front to back, DO NOT JUST focus on slides. Also, attend her online lectures along with her SI and you will do great!
Not too hard of a class but expect to teach yourself for most of it because her lectures arent helpful. She moved an exam date and made little effort to alert students who didnt attend lecture. Her communication in my experience was underwhelming.
Extremely nice prof. Just show up and participate for 2 assigned labs and take take your quizzes which allow multiple tries to pass or improve your grade. Friday mandatory meetings were moved online due to pandemic, so need to be able to download Microsoft Teams, and the meetings are around 5min. Have fun.
Honestly, she's super nice and all you have to do is go over slides and pass lab quizzes.
Dr. Tholen is very organized and she had everything posted on canvas for the entire year by the first week. She always emailed me back quickly and was helpful and kind. The exams should not be difficult as long as you watch the lectures and do the assigned reading. The exams where fair and the lab was not very difficult.
The entire course was taught through previously recorded lectures which she uploaded and you had to watch on your own time. The exams were easy as we were allowed to use this book. If this had not been allowed, the class would have been much more difficult. In general she is not very helpful and will oftentimes not answer your questions directly.
Dr. Tholen's microbiology class is alright. Lab is fun, lecture is eh. I emailed Dr. Tholen after the first exam asking for clarification on a test question and she never responded. The exams are all open book though so it's not terrible, though some of the questions are worded weird (why I emailed her in the first place).
Dr. Tholen is a good professor for microbiology. There was extra credit provided that was worth 5% of the entire grade. All lectures were recorded and posted so you could pace the class on your own. Exams were open book but reading is still important as there are 60 minutes for 50 questions. Lab for this class is fun. Overall interesting class.
Dr. Tholen was very accommodating during COVID. All class materials were posted on canvas before the beginning of the semester; including prerecorded lectures and readings. The book is FREE, so you have no excuse for not reading. All tests were open book. If you read, you will do well. A's are easily achievable, but you have to be disciplined.
Read the .pptx once at 8 pm on Sunday, you'll get a B. Do the simulations just once, you'll get a B. Read the .pptx 3x and do the sims 2x, you'll get an A. Lady is super arrogant and will never admit that she's wrong. Never responds to emails, and is rude when she does. Extra credit doesn't really help. Don't watch lectures. Don't read textbook.
Dr. Tholen honestly doesn't deserve some of the hate she gets from students, I found her to be very friendly and accommodating especially during COVID. The class is pretty straight forward and all the materials that you need are provided through canvas. If you review the PowerPoints you should be able to get an A.
She is a great professor!!!!!!
She is the least compassionate professor Ive ever met
Exams are open book but the lectures are prerecorded. This may not be suitable for those who arent good at self teaching and learning as this class is self paced. The lab portion is interesting and more interactive.
She is horrible, her class is about reading the book first, watch her lectures and do practice problems in the book which was no help, because at the end, the exams where tricky. She loves to trick question you, which in my opinion is setting me up for failure. If only she was caring enough to help us focus on what needed to be focused on.
Most of the class was self taught/online, so if you have a problem with that then I would suggest other not taking the class with her or email her to see what her ideas for the next semester are. My experience could've just been because of the pandemic so this could definitely change. Overall, she really knew her stuff and was very engaging!
Dropped the class and changed majors because of the extreme stress and workload. This class is super hard if you are taking other hard classes alongside it, as it requires an extensive amount of study time. Hard LDB quizzes every week with only 5 minutes to complete. She said everything in the chapters is fair game for the exams and was not lying.
I would not recommend taking this professor. Don't bother studying her lectures or PowerPoint because they are useless for the test. The only way to pass is by memorizing the textbook word by word. I would HIGHLY recommend taking Parks or getting access to his powerpoints if you end up w Tholen.
This woman saved my GPA. I sucked at this class hardcore, so that's why I gave a 5 for difficulty. I deserved a D or an F. I got a B because she had mercy through frequent extra credit and a healthy dose of open book. You'll probably understand her if you pay attention.
Dr. Tholen was great, although I feel bad she was given the horrible class of Bacterial Physiology by Boutte to teach: the class itself is probably the most useless you'll take at UTA. Lot's of unnecessary and unhelpful work. Tholen herself is great and very helpful. Watch out for Aida the TA; she loves to take points off for the fun of it.
"Flipped classroom style" which means there's video lectures and the class time is a kahoot and getting asked questions. A waste of time and I didn't learn anything. Tests were online with an open Ebook, so get a fast computer to look up answers. Despite her terrible teaching methods, Dr Tholen is approachable and friendly.
I enjoyed Dr. Tholen's microbiology class. I think I might have enjoyed the class more though if it wasn't in the "flipped classroom style." Get ready to read the textbook if you want to understand. I recommended going to class for the application part of the material. Overall, the tests weren't bad as it was open textbook.
Flipped style, attendance not mandatory, can join on Teams/in person. EC given out in class so will need to attend/watch recordings later to find out about EC. LOR only if you TA. Grade comes from tests mostly, read all the chapters & you should definitely pass. Lectures are participation heavy so it depends on how prepared your classmates are.
Class was so weird; you come in and Prof Tholen will sit at her desk and act cute There's NO lecture. You read research papers given and watch YouTube to learn yourself, then do group presentations, projects etc If you ask her questions she gets mad, she doesn't know what the hell the research is about. TA Aida grades give everyone Cs DONT TAKE!
I took Dr. Tholen for microbiology and she was a great professor! She is very intelligent and knows what she's talking about! Class grades include 5 exams and the cumulative final, (which can be dropped) some extra credit assignments, and the lab grade. grading is based on a points system. textbook (free) with open textbook exams! 100% recommend!
Every assignment lockdown browser/video, which makes it time consuming and hard if you have a loud home. Weekly quizzes and labs really help boost your grade. If you listen to the lectures and know everything in there you should do well and not make below an A. Read the book to clarify concepts; do all practice questions at the end of each chapter.
If you understand all the concepts in the lectures posted, you will get an A. She provides several quizzes, labs, and extra credit that count for 10% of your grade. The questions asked were not too rigorous and required memorization. She doesn't respond to emails and sometimes changes things last minute so keep up with dates.
She definitely doesn't do the flipped style thing anymore. Her lectures are informative. Friendly and very helpful as she's deeply involved with the lab. Exams are open book. This woman gives so much extra credit it's actually insane. I don't know how you couldn't at least pass this class, if not excel in it. Take her.
5 Lockdown Browser inbuilt textbook Exams + Final, 540 points for an A no curve, all extra credit >10 points, she grades them rough, boring lectures as she mostly reads off slides. The only fun thing about this class was the lab, Prof Tholen took at least 2-3 weeks to reply back even after double mailing. Wish there was another professor for micro.
This class is test-heavy but if you read the book you would do fine on the exams. Make sure you go to class because some days she gives out extra credit which really helps out your exam average. I would also do good in lab since it could boost your grade. If you can, have Kelsey as your lab instructor.
I don't really get the negative reviews about Dr. Tholen. The exams were based off the textbook and she is very straightforward about her expectations. For the exams, she lets you use the textbook and replaces the lowest exam grade if you take the final. If you expect this to be an easy A, then you are definitely in the wrong class.
The only good thing I can take from this class is that lectures are recorded on echo360. Dr Tholen has a soft voice and is always hard to hear her speak. She uses power point presentations to teach, instead of the textbook, but no content from the pp are in any of the exams. No preparation for exams whatsoever. Lab manual she wrote is confusing.
4 exams open book but 50 questions in 50 minutes on honorlock 1 final, no other assignments. Lowest grade is dropped. Attendance is not mandatory but its very helpful, she lets you know if certain topics will or will not be on the exam. I stayed after class a few times and she was happy to explain in more detail topics that I struggled with.
This is not my first time taking a course taught by Dr. Tholen, and I was honestly surprised at how horribly this course was ran. Everything is a group project except for proposal worth 35% of the grade. If you do all the group work and the slacker doesn't, too bad you get the same grade. unclear grading expectations and LOTS of reading on your own
I would not take Tholen again. She doesn't responded to emails, and when you approach her in class she makes excuses and continues to ignore emails. The lab assignments are the PET & Lab report that were never discussed in lab, nor lecture. They are 35% of your grade. In class we cover slides that aren't on exams. Extra credit counts less than 1%.
Dont take Tholen yall. Its a very test heavy course and she honestly tries her best, but we don't cover anything from the textbook, which is what all 5 exams are about. And its true that the so called "extra credit" counts less than 1%. Its 5/550 points. Dont take Bibek for Lab either, most confusing lab of my life.
She's also the lab coordinator, but labs were always disorganized/never had materials. Exams are easy, make sure to read and make quizlets. Only thing that really bothered me is that even if you did do extra credit, she said she would only put it in if you showed "effort and participation." Won't round your 89.5.
grade is pretty much open book exams and lab. exams are SUPER easy. her lectures are ok but i barely attended and i did fine. she does extra cred kahoots sometimes. the ppts are a good review but you really just need the textbook to do good on exams.
I don't understand her bad rep. Her exams are open book and showing up to class is optional. I do think her actual lectures are something to improve, but having the textbook during exams is awesome. The textbook is from 2019, so a few things like COVID-19 or monkeypox won't be in the textbook so be sure to cover that in her slides before exams.
This is my first rating on here. I must say this is one of worst course online. Reasons: Extreme work load. Every open book quiz is proctored. Lecture heavy. Bad format. TA offers no good feedback. No guidance.
Dr. Tholen tries her best to facilitate and responded promptly to emails. I think the workload was extremely heavy and required a minimum of 12 hrs/week of study time to learn information on 2-3 chapter per week. The chapter and lab quizzes allowed for online textbook access, but the textbook did not have information pertaining to the lab quizzes.
I get that some people like her because she's nice, but that doesn't make a good teacher. She reads from her slides, struggles to answer questions, she never replies to emails, and she sent me away from her office hours twice because she's too busy. Her labs are unorganized with TA's that don't know what they're doing.I received an A for the class.
I took Tholen a while ago, only rating now because a friend of mine had her last semester. Although I got a B, she is the most unreasonable person I have ever met. Exams are open book, but you have like 50min to answer 60questions. She never replies to emails, can't answer questions, and she created the lab manual that even confused our TA. 0/10
Class only consists of 4 midterms and 1 final that can be dropped. All exams are open book, so just review the chapters a couple of times and you will be fine. The lab is a lot, but that could be because I took the course over the summer. Dr. Tholen does not reply to emails and her syllabus and lectures were unorganized and not up to date.
If English is not your first language DO NOT take her! I took her during summer and her lectures are off her PowerPoints BUT her exams are off the textbook? she's very unreasonable, barely replies to emails. Exams are open book, but you have 50 min to answer 50-60 questions?
Dr. Tholen is awesome. Her course will have 4 midterms and 1 final (80%) and a lab section (20%). All exams are online. I had an 88 as my final grade and she bumped it up to an A. She is so nice and her lectures are very interesting. If you work with her, she work with you.
It's funny how student's with Bs get bumped up to an A, but students with Cs get less than 1% credit even if you did ALL of her Kahoots and extra credit work. Tholen reads from powerpoint slides and appears frazzled when asked questions in class. She also gives false info about lab. The extra credit is flawed, because its only 5 out of 550 points.
I took BIOL 4390 this past spring '24 semester. Dr. Tholen helped us new UGTAs through understanding the expectations and process of running the general and nursing micro labs. She was helpful with getting us started while allowing us to work through every task on our own. This course is highly recommended for any student wishing to work in labs!
Before taking the class students should be considerate of the prof's schedule. Dr. Tholen is the main contact for all gen micro labs despite the increased class enrollment each semester. Outside the classroom and working for her as a UGTA has only made me respect her as a person and want to work again for her and help with the lab preparation.
It is a lot of knowledge to intake, which is why exams are open books. Her labs are a bit unorganized, and TA might be confused. She does only use PowerPoint, but the PowerPoint is a summary of the chapter. Read the chapters before the exam and the tests are hard but not hard if you know how to take an open-book test. Kahoot are extra credit
tests are based directly on the textbook. It is a lot of studying (memorizing minuscule info from the txtbk) for exams that are worth 75% of your grade. her PowerPoints are not that good either... and she is not clear on what exactly will be on the test. the class is too challenging for material that is not that difficult. curves and EC help.
Lack of material to succeed in class. Nothing but exams. Reasoning “I don't want to have to do all the work now, you have to go and find that information yourself” first off stfu. Second wow. So if I have to find the material, teach it to myself then what's the point in us paying you. Go take Dr.Charles she'll set you up for success unlike Tholen.
Not lenient whatsoever and has little-no empathy or care for students. She is a karen in professor form. Lectures are absolutely boring and hearing her talk is so annoying. Your grade is based on only pre-exam quizzes and the exams themselves. Sometimes, the exams include questions that weren't even on the ppts. A LOT to memorize study on ppts.
She does not care for her students at all, telling us to memorize the slides AND the textbook, which is double the information. I studied just the slides for the first 3 exams and did good. So I did the same for the 4th exam to discover that it was crtical thinking based and 80% of it from the textbook. That exam was a complete scam, good luck.
You should take her IF YOU WANT TO FAIL. She gives you absolutely no way to narrow down what could be on exams. She does not care, her slides are useless and her lectures are boring. I used Dylan Parks' slides to guide my studying for the last two exams, and they were my best. Final exam: no one passed. highest was a 68. don't take her
The lecture section was extremely textbook test-heavy, but the lab that I took held by Dylan Parks was very fun and interactive helping boost my grade a lot. Her communication through email comes off as passive aggressive (ex. when she put the wrong lab stimulation in her syllabus and never fixed it.) All of her lecture slides are unclear.
It's unimportant that I got an A. She was uncaring; the module presentations and lectures were poor.  They didn't provide detail, you need to read the book, the tests were hard. She avoided my queries, which is unusual for a professor. Have never had one like her, would not recommend.
took her for BIOL 2444. the grade is 4 exams and lab grade and that's it. if you mess up on one of the exams, you're cooked. she says the kahoots are for extra credit? she's a liar. tests are open book but not the kind you think. be ready to lock in for those tests
She goes over PowerPoints in class that aren't very clearly put together as the info is all over the place and not clearly explained. The tests are open for you to view the PowerPoints but still don't help due to difficult test questions that aren't presented on the powerpoint or quizzes. group project also did not have a rubric or outline.
My thing is, the lack of structure in this class made it hard for me to learn. I read the textbook, did notes, answered the questions on the textbook yet it wasn't enough. The test questions can be overwhelming. Asked her questions over the material, could not give me a straight answer. Don't go to lecture and she lies Kahoot are NOT extra credit.
RUN & KEEP RUNNING. she highly depends on the textbooks but yet gives SMALL information on the powerpoints for each module that you teaching youself atp. Kahoots are lies. Poor teaching quality. reads off the powerpoints and doesnt go into details. save yourself and gpa from HER, not the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! She is the worst when it comes to lectures and answering e-mails. There is a lot of notes that you take, however the material in slides never aligns with the quizzes nor exams and the attempts are limited which isn't fair considering it is homework assignments. If you fail even one exam, you might as well drop out.
Professor Tholen has been my favorite professor. I have her for microbiology at UTA. There are no assignments only exams. Study and memorize the powerpoint= get a good grade. She gives extra credit for simply attending class and logging in on iClicker. She answers questions.
She adds extra points back to every exam, gives extra credit just for attending lecture, and lowest exam grade is dropped. The PowerPoints can be disorganized but her lectures fill in the gaps. Just make sure you read the textbook and you'll be fine!
Don't understand the hate. She doesn't teach the lectures for this class, they aren't the best, but not bad. She gives just as many quizzes - more like 20 question tests - as exams: all with honor lock & 1 chance. My complaint is the study questions were significantly different than actual test questions - felt like I didn't study the right stuff
hated this class. 2460 micro. she is passive aggressive and doesn't provide homework with multi attempts (than 2) to review for tests. she doesn't care. if you can take someone else, DO IT. material is hard and she just reads off slides. tests don't fully align with slides so read the textbooks. iclicker “extra credit” is a joke…
