Professor Bandara is one of the best professors I've had at SLCC in the 2 years I've been going here. He was a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka, so he definitely knows what he's teaching. The essays for this class aren't too bad, mainly because he'll help you out if you're struggling and let you resubmit papers. Real funny guy. Has a thick accent though.
He is the best teacher I've had at SLCC, he is very understand and teacher the subject with clarity. He is unbiased and teaches each religion fairly. He's a pretty funny guy and I would take a class from him again.
He is a great instructor and takes you through each religion from its beginning to the modern times. The term doesnt seem like it is long enough and there is so much more to explore.
He has a very thick accent, which makes it difficult to understand what he says. He doesn't stick to his powerpoint and jumps all over the place. Expect a solid amount of ESSAYS and a heavy amount of extra reading. This class has very long lectures and a heavy workload as well. Also, be prepared for his crude humor and his loud know-it-all attitude
I really enjoyed this class. The class structure: the readings, assignments, are well organized. Posted online PowerPoint is very helpful. He though does not like those who chat, text and use electronic for fun during class time because, according to him, no one should disturb other students. Wijitha Bandara was one of my best professors, and he c
Wijitha is hands down, the best professor I've ever had. He's always there to help you out, and enjoys forming (appropriate) relationships with students. Teaches the subject matter extremely thoroughly and is very well educated. Doesn't allow phones in his class, which may bug you.
Dr. Bandara is a great professor. His first hand experience in Buddhism and great insight in other religions, practices and scriptures makes him a special scholar. I am so glad I took his introduction to world religions class. He cares a lot about students' learning and has "a zero tolerance" for texting. So Phone addicts hate his class!
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. He is not flexible at all. Very poor English, does not understand most questions asked. never answers any questions fully. MEAN and hard to understand! By far THE WORST teacher EVER!!!!!!
Difficult to understand, clarity of instruction is poor at best. Must learn from book in order to keep up. Instructor easily misunderstands questions and leaves a lot to be answered.
Students who attend regularly, follow his instruction carefully love professor Bandara. I know that the students who do not like his instructions hate him. Take his class and you wont regret. He is one of the best professor I ever had.
Amazing teacher! He does his best to keep you interested in his class. There is a lot of homework but nothing really hard, he is very flexible with due dates. He is hilarious and has lots of great stories. Knows the material and how to explain it.
GREAT!
Wijitha was a great teacher. Yes there is somewhat of a language barrier, but nothing extreme. He is a former Buddhist monk, who gives you great insight into other regions of the world that he has lived in. Go to class and he bumps your grade up on level. Dont use your cell or laptop for other things because he will lose his lid. 4-5 essays, quiz
A great class with clear instructions. Each tradition has an assignment and a quiz with multiple choice. A lot of rich information of 5 major religious traditions taught with much attention to their history and culture. Wijitha's passion towards religions made this class exciting one. I am glad I took this class.
Professor Wijitha Bandara has a crazy interesting background. Being that he's from Sri Lanka, he can be a little hard to understand at times. He has tons of interesting course material and tries his best to make sure all students are following what he is teaching. He is also friendly and funny. This was by far my favorite class for this semester.
Worth taking, would retake if I can afford.
this class; Intro to world religions was a great class. The class taught five major religions in detail and examine their cultures and history thoroughly. I enjoyed this class.
This course is filled with quizzes, group discussions, tests, and essays. The teacher is nice and there to help you in any way, but I didn't enjoy the class as much as I wish I would have. Teacher doesn't assign a lot of reading but expects you to watch long videos each week to understand the assignments and be able to pass the tests.
Great professor for many reasons, but his cultured history plays a huge role in how well this Religions class is taught. He will do anything to help his students succeed in the class as long as you DO NOT TEXT OR USE YOUR CELL PHONE. He feels very disrespected by this. He is very passionate about his education and believes we all should be
Very good professor with a wicked sense of humor, treats all religions equally. I am glad I took this course.
I am currently in his class. I am grateful for his care for students. Expectations are clear, lessons plan are given, PowerPoint are available and the rest is up to students. I heard that professor Bandara has always been caring and very helpful.
Great Class! Learn not only religions but also culture, philosophy and history. So far I am loving this class.
He has been my absolute favorite teacher at SLCC so far and I loved his class, he has real world experience that he brings to his lectures and make it fun and very interesting. Take notes and you will have to go see a religious ceremony from two different cultures but that's easy and so worth it.
Very unorganized, unclear instructions. His syllabus was confusing this wouldn't be a huge deal except that he is rude, has poor communication skills & is unwilling to work with you AT ALL. Horrible experience, received a grade I didn't deserve.
I have taken two courses taught by Dr. Bandara on religions. I have never noticed him being rude to students. He was willing to help students in many ways. His courses as I experienced were well organized. His passion on religions, enthusiasm and humor added fun to class. Talking, texting, were not tolerated, which i appreciated.
Wijitha is a very good teacher. If you are willing to read and attend his class regularly, he will help you reach your goal.
Profesor Bandara is an amazing Teacher. His lectures are fun and interesting. The class as a whole seems to be motivated and engaged. If you can do the reading and pay attention, then you will have no problem passing this class. If you do so happen to have a hard time, he is more than willing to work with you. Great class. Would do it again.
Dr. Wijitha is not only willing to clarify expectations, but is also willing to work with you. He works off of the premise of respect and desire to learn. Put in the effort and be respectful (i.e. no phones, participate) and it will pay dividends. Religion can be boring, but he uses humor to lecture and keeps the class engaged. Light reading. Fun.
I am a straight A student and his online course was the most painful class I have taken to date. Others I know loved his lecture class, have great things to say about him. Expect to write numerous essays, abandon your personal life. I spent 5-6 hours per day (everyday!) on this course and still doubt that it will be enough to maintain my GPA.
One of the best classes I have taken. Expectations and goals are clear, syllabus and assignments are well planned and designed. His humor makes studying religion much easier. I recommend his classes to those who are interested in religion, culture and philosophy.
He expects too much of you as if his class is the only class you are taking. Quizzes aren't timed but you have only 1 shot to get the answers right and even after you finish the quizzes, they lock so you cant even view your answers to see what you missed. The setup he has for everything is confusing. Good lectures though but not an easy class.
There is a lot of reading, however it is broken up into sections with video presentations to help you absorb all of the information. Professor Bandara responds quickly to any questions and offers a ton of guidance on questions. The mandatory site visits were by far my most favorite assignment I have ever done. He updates grades very quickly.
Very good professor with great humor. A plenty of readings yet no pressure because what I read is covered in his lectures. PowerPoint lectures, educational documentaries and humor make his class warm and welcoming. His willingness to help in writing, reading and understanding religious plus philosophical concepts makes learning easy.
He gives great feedback on assignments, but has the worste online lectures. He expects us to buy the book and to understand everything written within as well as all of his 30 minute lecture videos that nobody can understand because of his heavy Indian accent. There is a lot of material tested on that is not even mentioned in the book.
He used to be a Buddhist Monk so he is very educated on his religion topics. His classes are always funny and I feel like I get something out of them every time. Paper and quizzes are kind of hard, but he lets you redo things if you do bad on them. He really wants to help you get the best grade possible.
Professor Bandara goes out of his way to present the material in the most engaging way possible. He has a gift for taking incredibly difficult and dry subjects and turning them into everyday examples so that people can not only hear what he is saying but also understand the underlying message he is trying to get across. Highly recommend to everyone
Great class:! I learned a ton from it, admit that there's a lot of work but professor Bandara help you . Students are allowed to revise their essay and re-take quizzes. I strongly recommend his classes.
Professor Bandara is an amazing teacher. He does all he could helping students. Good class and I enjoyed it very much. I would re-take if finance was not a factor
Professor Bandara was a great teacher. He was always saying, if you need help, just ask. Religion is a difficult topic but if you attend class and do reading then you'll be fine. Nothing was in his tests that he didn't cover in class or wasn't in the textbook. If you aren't looking for an easy way out, this is a good class.
Great class!
If you show up to class willing to listen and take notes, you will set yourself up for an easy A. Wijitha really cares about each student and even meets privately with you twice in the semester just to make sure everything is okay. I highly recommend this professor. Participate and he'll love you. Joke around with him, it makes the class fun.
He's a real gem TBH . The way he teach develops more interest in me for world religions. This class is always so interesting and infomative.
He is not always clear about what he is asking. Do NOT compare religions in this class, just learn them. Is willing to answer questions, but get ready for the whole class to know that somebody asked the question because he emails everyone the answer, not just you!! Difficult to understand with his accent at times on his pin-casts.
If you send any emails, be prepared for him to answer to the entire class!-email rants... Hard to understand, but luckily has the script at bottom of power points. Can be a hard grader even if you include everything he wants in a paper. Personally, don't care for him at all, and would advise others to be careful if you sign up for his class...
Great class. Professor Bandara's contagious passion for the study of religion and humor makes his class great. He is willing to work with students individually. I highly recommend his class.
This guys is great! Every steps is clearly explained on the first day of the semester. We had fun with discussions, reading was supported by his own personal experiences as an x Buddhist monk, jokes a lot, friendly and very supportive. If you follow his guidelines you can ends up with good grade. Take it and you wont regret.
Mr. Bandara is such an awesome professor. He brings humor and fun into the classroom, which makes the long lectures bearable. He is really understanding and meets with students two times a semester to go over your grade. Is not hard on late assignments, and cares about you and your grade.
I'm sure that he is a great teacher in the classroom, but he is not a great teacher to take a course from online. I would not recommend it.
Took his class online he gives good feedback when you get a bad grade that way you improve in the future. Lots of reading for this class and lets of essays.
Great Class, very good professor. Lectures are insightful, class is organized and whole semester is easy if you follow his instructions. He care about students and help as much as he can. professor alos meet with students as many times as needed. I recommend this class.
Lectures were interesting. Open tests (including final) and quizzes. Class needed more organization. NO due dates on any of the 6 papers, site visits, discussions, etc. Due dates only applied to tests and quizzes. He may change this in future semesters. VERY easy grader, accommodating, you can submit papers for feedback & submit til desired grade
Just finished taking this class online, and I would NOT(underline and BOLD) take this class again from this teacher. Discussions were confusing, and the class was not very well structured at all. Teachers grading was also very harsh, and his tests were ridiculous, they usually took a few hours to complete . Would NOT recommend.
I was a straight A student for his online class and admit that there are many essays and readings yet the professor was very helpful. I loved the discussion board where students share their insight. This is a very good class if you are willing to read and write.
I have taken a class from Wijitha who is a great teacher. I reccommend his classes for two reasons, he care about students' success and hie classes are less stressful.
Witjitha is a fun instructor! He has is knowledgeable in world religion. He makes class fun and enjoyable. I would take his class again.
I am currently taking professor Bandara's class, which I enjoy very much. I am Learning a lot and gain insight cultural norma and values with fun. I strongly reccommend his classes
He is super funny and meets with you once at midterm and once at final, he really wants his students to succeed and it shows. Super knowledgeable about world religions and actually can make some prospects of them hilarious. Turns a boring subject fun.
If your goal is to learn absolutely nothing, take this class. You also get the pleasure of reading a horrifically dry textbook, along with taking quizzes and tests up the wahzoo. Not to mention the ridiculous discussions due every week and the four quite confusingly laid out papers you get to write. This class is a gem! I do NOT recommend it.
He is an amazing teacher and very compassionate, he actually called me on my cellphone during finals because I missed a quiz that would have helped my grade and he unlocked it for me so I could take it, he really went out of his way. I would take this class in a heartbeat I learned so much.
My least favorite professor at SLCC. I've tried to take this course twice from him, but end up dropping it because I simply can not stand him.
I am taking Dr. Bandara's summer class - introduction to Buddhism. I love this class and professor's knowledge about Buddhism and Buddhist practices
I am a student of Professor Bandara's online class. He is very responsible, prompt response to emails, and grade on time. Tons of reading but he is willing to work with you, so this course is worth taking.
Wasn't able to understand professor. Very hard class. Would love to take this class with a different instructor.
Had to take this class for a general education credit. He is a great professor! The class is interesting, he makes lots of jokes and is pretty funny. He does have a thick accent so if that is something that bothers you be aware, but I am able to understand him just fine. He tells us to buy a textbook but You dont need it.
I am not sure how it is possible to dislike him. He is hilarious and makes the class super fun. I am not sure if he understands our American political correctness thing though so if you are easily offended by a very direct sense humor then don't take him. :) overall he was is a great instructor who really cares about his students.
I just completed Dr. Bandara's class and recommend that you should take. His knowledge about religions and history is amazing. Talk to him and he is willing to help you as much as he can
An awesome teacher who genuinely wants the best for his students.
He was helpful with giving me extra time to do late assignments and get better scores on tests. However, the lectures were very confusing most of the time being all over the place. The teacher had a thick accent and it was difficult to follow the over all class. I liked his lenience toward passing with the best grade possible but get ready to read.
I really enjoyed Professor Bandara's class. He was very willing to work with you on due dates for tests and essays. Tests were hard, but are open book and online. He meets with you individually through the semester to make sure you're where you need to be with grades. I appreciated his unique insight into world religions, especially Buddhism.
I have been enjoying Wijitha's class this semester. It has been a great class. He is funny, smart and caring.
Wijitha Bandara is one of the better professors at slcc. He sits down with his students individually twice a semester to see how they are doing in the class. In my three years of going to this college I have never had a professor who cared for his students like Wijitha does. His lectures are on point and his students are always included.
VERY HORRIBLE. You will learn nothing. PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS ESPECIALLY YOU'RE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT. He doesn't care at all. Very awful class management. He Didn't respect at all.
Coronavirus has stopped my favorite face to face class of this semester.
I loved this course. It was so easy to navigate and get done. He graded things fast and answered quickly to emails. He was available to talk if needed.
I took his religions class and I had a great time. He is a little difficult to understand at times, but if you ask a lot of questions it works out. He is a very chill grader and will tell you to go back and fix things to get a better grade. He is super funny in his lectures and you can tell he is very passionate. Cool teacher. Would recommend.
Worst class and worst professor ever. So confusing and unclear what he wanted us to do and what he was teaching. He would bash on other religions that weren't his own and was disrespectful which made a lot of us feel uncomfortable. I liked a few of the projects. But this was the worst religions class I ever took.
Dr. Bandara is a great professor with a contagious passion for the study of religion. He is very compassionate towards his students, and desires that everyone succeed in his class. He is always willing to work with students individually in order to ensure their success.
I am in Wijitha's class this semester and like him very much.
I am so grateful to have a quick 5-minute meditation that refreshes, relaxes, and calms my mind before class starts. I love it. Thank you, Wijitha for teaching this class.
He's super funny and his lectures are the best I've ever had. He should probably be working at a better college. He explains everything in a way that's really memorable and connects material to so many other ideas you can tell he's clever and cares about the idea of religion in a very anthropological way. I wish I needed more GE classes he taught.
I am learning a lot about the religious diversity in America and how Americans deal with it. A great class.
This class had way to much reading each week. It never stopped and it was hard to get everything done in time. It was very confusing on what I needed to get done each week. It was an online course and I rarely had interaction with him. I just did the work and watched the videos provided.
I feel like there's an average amount of work given. But towards the end of the semester, you have to write multiply essays and feel the workload is pretty heavy. I also don't like how strict he is on grading. But the material taught is pretty interesting.
The course had a lot of reading but the are very interesting. Professor was willing to open closed assignments when I gave the reason for missing them. Professor also let us know when he was online available and willing to set up zoom meetings if necessary.
I LOVED Dr. Bandara, he is adorable & so knowledgeable. I took 2 of his classes; Rels2300 is pretty much self-teaching, insane amount of reading, if you fall behind it takes some major effort to get back on track. Rels2400easiest class I have ever taken. If you make your presence known, he is more than willing to work with you.
Get ready to write a paper/answer questions with only a really vague prompt! Sums up this class. Asks the most simple question but then you have to write 300+ words and if you dont stick exactly to what he deems fit then youre docked points. Nice guy but it sucks that I hated a class I was excited to take.
I am currently taking a Wijita's class and love it. He caring and insightful. Everyone in class pays attention to his lectures cause all can take a lot from them.
I really love his class. And actually learned a lot from him.
This professor was a good teacher and did good going over material but the midterm and tests sucked. The midterm consisted of 4 questions with a requirement of writing 500 words per answer. One of the questions was basic and could be answered within 3 sentences and did not need to be a requirement of 500 words.
This course is highly recommended for its clear guidelines and supportive environment. The professor is known for being engaging, approachable, and always willing to assist students with their needs.
Really great prof! His lectures were always so in depth and he's super knowledgable in the religious aspects of life and in all religions! There were lots of essays to write in the semester and he was a bit of a tough grader but not terrible. I'd take this class again if I could.
