been trying to get into his class. my friends all had him and loved the class. "sarcastic, witty, picks great topics." has covered vonnegut and clockwork orange in the past. can anyone else who's had him vouch for him?
He is a great professor. He makes every lesson fun and makes a lot of jokes at the same time he teaches. He walys has time for his students. It was honestly my favorite class.
Great Professor. Always there to help and he's a fair grader. His lectures are really interesting along with his reading material
Great guy, good teacher. Can make simple ideas more complicated. If you enjoy writing, take this class.
he is ok.
He is definitely a good teacher, helps his students succeed, not much hw, fair grader, amusing class, actually makes the class enjoyable, never boring.
Farley's the****. One of the best professors I've ever had, he remembered me two years after class and often stopped to talk to me about whatever was on his mind. Really likes his job. Admits to having Bobby Brown fantasies...
So far hes been amazing...good, funny guy. "The correct answer to that question is the Man's plan to put a Brother down." that was his answer to every questoin. lol hes great.
One of the best professors I've ever had at Stony brook. he remembers people way after ur semester has ended! true person and very intelligent!
Prof. Farley is pretty cool. Taking his class really got me to thinking more "outside the box". He'll go out of his way to help you if you need it (extra office hours). His class is very liberal, in the sense that you choose your own thesis topics, in reference to a particular book. That's a plus!
he's a really nice and funny professor. He's kind of strict about papers but he's always available to help you out with ideas and suggestions...and if you show interest (like go to his office hours) then you are most likely gonna get a good grade...so i def. recommend him!!
Wilbur is awesome. He doesn't give many reading assignments. You'll know which ones you have to do. He cancells classes once in a while. He funny, interesting, and cool. He grades fairly, doesn't expect you to use huge words in writing, which is cool. definitly do the optional final assignment. He raised my grade :)
wilbur is helpful during his office hours. usually his classes are lively and interesting; makes morning class less dreadful. He may seem weird and unpredictable at first, but he's alright.
He is very friendly and very helpful. He is also very funny. He will not get angry and will try to make class as interesting as possible. If you do the few writing assignments and the final essay and go to class then you will get a good grade. GREAT TEACHER!!!
Do your work in his class and if you make the effort to go to his office hours, you can most likely get an A. Very interesting teacher, he may seem strange at first, but he's one of the most friendly professors I've had.
very nice guy. open-minded and helpful. He can offer u really great ideas while u revising ur papers. Don't be afraid to go talk to him. Keep in mind the following advice. believe in yourself all the time and wilbur WILL c ur effort!
FANTASTIC professor, great guy. Available for help and bs sessions about "Star Wars" philosophy. Fantastic teacher, made class discussions incredibly interesting, and it was his first semester teaching 204. Easy work, good readings. No quizzes, no tests, just essays. Hysterically funny and smart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
he is very understanding and helpful
Fantastic teacher! One of the best professors i have had at Stony Brook! The material we go over is interesting and fun; the class discussions are down to earth and not intimidating at all, and over all he is just a great guy to talk to about literature. Go out of your way to take him and you will not regret it !!!!
Excellent teacher, funny guy, gives a damn. Go to office hours for anything and he will try to help. Highly Recommended.
Professor Farley is awesome. He's really quirky, but will make you laugh. He gave us really enjoyable reading assignments, as well (ex: "Slaughterhouse Five" and cool passages from the text.) There are only a few papers to write, and he gives you a lot of creative freedom with them. He always takes attendance, so go to class and you'll do fine.
You will not find a better teacher out there. He is an intelligent, funny, interesting man that will make the class just fly by with his sarcastic comments and obscure pop culture references. Take a class with him and you will be talking about him for years.
hes my favorite teacher i've had so far at stony brook. funny, friendly and cool. take him!
Dude is opinionated, so just go along with his diatribes. He'll help you with your papers during office hours. Just agree with him, and you'll do okay.
He is AWESOME!!!! One of my favorite teachers ever. He is funny and cool and the work isn't too hard. He is very helpful and do his best to help you pass. I highly recommend him!
Best writing professor I've ever had. A little strange, but will definitely help you with your writing. You'll get out of this class what you put into it.
Wilbur is amazing, yes I call him Wilbur. Had him my first semester at Stony and he still remembers me! Great guy, knows what he is talking about and extremely helpful. If you can, take WRT 102 with him!
Wilbur Farley is in my top two favorite professors of all time. He's hilarious and really makes going to class enjoyable. I loved the classroom discussions. He's a really cool person.
Farley is one of the best professors I've ever had. He cares about teaching you, and is willing to adjust his lesson plans depending on the needs, concerns, and questions of the class. He isn't strict on deadlines and is easily available during office hours. The only demerit I'd give him is that he doesn't hand things back on time, or at all.
He gives lot of A. Even though you don't do well on the writing, if you go to his office and see him often, he will definitely give you an A. At the end of the semester, He says to write a short essay about what you deserve to get for your final grade. If you have reasonable arguments, you can get whatever grade you want.
Tries to make the class enjoyable by cracking jokes. He is generous while grading but only if you meet the requirements and put in the effort. A bit intimidating during conferences and office hrs but he will help you. He holds more than the required number of office hrs so take advantage of those.
One of the best writing professors. As long as you put thoughts in your writing, an A is inevitable. Highly recommended.
Great professor. You can write whatever you want within the limits of the theme of the class. He's a very intelligent man, a little odd at times but very smart. He also likes you to ask a lot of questions so ask and make the man happy.
OMG. I thought this class would never end. He talks incessantly and goes on and on about Foucoult and all that crap. If you call him on it, he doesn't know what he's talkin about. Easy grader, but complete pseudo-intellect type. ultra PC, so be careful.
looks kinda like kanye. heres the deal wif this professor. u dont need to be the best writer in the world.wats required to get an A in this course is attend office hours to discuss your essays. the more effort you put into this course, the better your grade.don't waste ur time proofreading ur essays b/c he doesnt care about w/e trash you typed
Best writing professor ever! Talk to him during his office hours, he's an awesome person.
Yeah... awesome professor. He's pretty chill. He doesn't do a lot of silly things like force you to have your essay formatted really structured and with all these requirements fulfilled. On the other hand, he does expect you to write the papers and put at least a little effort into them. And he's the funny insane. Dances while teaching. Hi-larious.
You will write a bit in the class, but not too much considering its a wrt class. He is really funny and has a way to get everyone into the course material. When no one would want to respond to him in class he would always say, "Have I told you guys so much I hate you?!" very playfully!
Easily one of the best professors I've had, and the best course I've taken. He is such a cool guy and the subject was interesting. Just participate and put some effort into your writing and you'll get an A. All we did in class was talk about superheros, and watch films! Very fun, thought-provoking at the same time. Wilbur Farley is the man!
Probably one of the coolest professors around. He makes class fun and very interesting. For a pointless freshman seminar, he actually made something out of it
Seriously best class ever. He's such a great professor and makes the course material interesting. 75% of the time we were watching movies and discussing them. Make sure you take this class!
Easy prof, easy A, take his class if you already took AP English in highschool. You won't learn much from him, but I got an A because I can write well. If writing is not your strong suit you will most likely fail the portfolio since you do not learn much from him.
Worst class my freshman year. The dude totally politicized writing assignments, so if you aren't in agreement with his every word, and he talks all class long, you lose.
THE WORST TEACHER STONY BROOK HAS. THIS CLASS WAS A CLASS ON CULTURE RATHER THAN WRITING
Just sit back and let him talk all class and nod your head in agreement. Go to his office and make him think he's helping your essay. He ruined all my work.
Terrible. Absolutely terrible. If you get on his bad side, you stay there. I worked so hard in this class and ended up becoming a worse writer with a bad grade. If you have the opportunity, do NOT take his class.
HORRIBLE. Criticizes papers in the rudest way possible. Chuckles and shows frustration if you do something wrong in office hours. NEVER HANDED BACK ANY CORRECTED WORK. Maybe once actually but that's it. He has a questionable history. Overall, if you're bad at writing, don't expect any improvements from him.
I might drop him. Too political. What's with all these writing teachers tellin us what to think. Im sic of it.
He barely grade the essays and work in class and always talks something which aren't relevant to the class materials. He is not a responsible professor. The textbooks we use in class not that helpful. Mostly, I felt that he doesn't focus on what he should do for WRT 102, instead, he gives too much online assignments.
He barely grade the essays in class and rather talks something which aren't relevant to the class materials. The textbooks we use in class not that helpful. Mostly, I felt that he doesn't focus on what he should do for WRT 102, instead, he gives a lot online assignments.
He is very talkative and active but not in what he should do. He is very critical at the writing, I gradually lost interests to go his office hours. He is not responsible at grading essays. He isn't even collect essays from students, we never get any essays back. His teaching is wasting student's time. He will mislead students. He isn't responsible
Great professor. Always willing to help.
Great Professor A lot of opportunity for Office Hours and interesting lectures very sarcastic hard to catch sometimes. But does a terrific job at helping students mold an effective essay through any medium (Analysis, Research, or Informal) Take WRT 102 with Wilbur Farley!
You don't need to be an amazing writer to get a good grade in this course. Just put in effort, attend office hours, participate in class, and revise your papers. Also, be active on blackboard, he checks! He grades you based on how much effort you put into the class. Make him get familiar with your face and name.
Farley is a character- awesome to talk to, and very thought provoking. The class is discussion-based, so you get out what you put in. He really wants to do the best for his students. Highly recommend!
I took this class, like many other for the university requirement. He's very helpful and if I had a chance I would take him again. Unfortunately he failed me but that was my fault for not finishing the last essay. Other than that, a really easy professor as long as you do the work and show up.
Awesome teacher, if you put in the work an A is definitely achievable
DO NOT TAKE!!! Doesn't return work with corrections unlike every other writing 102 teacher. If you actually want to improve your writing do not take.
If you want a teacher who edits for you to make your paper perfect he's not the person. You will have to work for an A. But I feel international kids really shouldn't take this class with him because American politics might be a little confusing for them. Over all very good class. Lectures can be boring, but make sure you go.
horrible teacher, doesn't grade any homework, honestly the worst teacher i've ever seen in my entire life, yes he is funny but not a teacher that can help u with ur study. Don't take his class
Not helpful with writing course
Had fun in his class until i realized I have to submit a portfolio. He taught more politics than writing in that class which ends up with me not passing the portfolio. Fun guy, but would be better off as a pole sic professor, not writing. No feedback whatsoever. Unless you come to his office hours which interfere with my other lecture
Wilbur makes his class extremely clear. If you follow his guidelines and see him during his office hours you will pass with flying colors. I feel like many people are intimidated by writing 102 but honestly Wilbur makes it such a great experience. I honestly didn't put a lot of effort in and got a great grade. Make sure your active on blackboard.
He's a great professor, your graded on your papers and attendance. This class is very easy If you already know how to write a well structured paper. If you don't know how to do so don't take this class. His main focus is to get his students to learn about how they work as writers. Its not to teach you how to write
He is a nice guy and is helpful when developing your papers, but he has high expectations and is a TOUGH grader for a 100 level class.
Professor Farley is one of the best I've had at Stony Brook. He has reasonable expectations for your work, and is more than helpful in getting you to where you need to be. Go to his office hours!!!
Professor Farley melted my brain by exposing my macho, Nietzsche inspired tirades for what they were, a cheap attempt to appear smart and intellectually rigorous. His persistant, and patient discourse over the course of many emails and office visits where we discussed my work truly tightened up my writing.
He's a nice guy. If you enjoy engaging lectures you will learn something. The writing is easy if you do it and difficult if you don't. He will like you if you make him laugh. Lectures are mandatory which was the only annoying part aside from the portfolio that is needed for all WRT 102 classes.
He's a good teacher overall. Very lax and may take a while before he grades any of your papers.
Worst writing class. He's all over the place and unfocused. Doesn't listen to your points you try to make in your paper. He's all about liberal indoctrination so be careful what you say;)
I mean, he is great, just little bit unfocused during class time and graded really really slow.
He is one of the worst professor ever. I have literally cried in front of him. I showed him three different paper, he rejected all of them. I asked him for help but he would always say abstract things that made no sense. Had to write paper about science and idk what, something I was not interested in. I wish I had taken it with someone else.
The only thing that you can learn from this guy is to care about your readersand there is nothing else that you can getalsohe is a harsh grader always with ambiguous feedback at least for me.
Is office hours are not friendly. He does not directly tell you your flaws and keeps on asking questions about why u did this and why u did that. so office hours were useless. He is a really funny professor but his lectures are really boring.
I don't know why everyone is carping about how bad he is. I took his WRT 102 freshmen year and didn't even pay attention, did not do any of the blogs or weekly posts, and in the end I still got an A. Sure, I didn't get much from his class but it is extremely easy as long as you do the major assignments and try on the E-portfolio. Funny guy too.
Don't take his WRT 102 class anyway. He can't provide any help for your essay. In addition, he always ask some questions that you can't answer.
In this semester, his topics for the classes all had something to do with censorship and based on the film and articles he assigned, it is very easy to see where his political orientation lies. If you say anything contray in the paper or blogs, he will go out of his way to argue with YOU and EVERYTHING in your papers. Beware what you say.
Very all over the place, never graded any of my assignments or gave feedback. Gives ambiguous answers to your questions that leave you even more confused. Always asks you things that you can't really answer and doesn't offer too much help on your writing. Make sure to do the blogs and discussion boards and put effort into your E-Portfolio.
Avoid his class if you can... there is many good professor for wrt102. Everytime when I show him my essays, he focus on criticism and want me to rewrite the essay. It happened because of his unclear expression and wrong instruction that he supposed to receive from writing department. I barely passed his course even I did hard work in his class.
I thought at best he would give me a B, but I ended up getting an A in his class. Just show that you care, and go to his office hours. His office hours were a bit annoying because he'd ask questions that I wouldn't have the answers to, but listen to his feedback and apply it to the work. I was semi-consistent with the blogs/discussions.
An amazing writing professor with many techniques that will without a doubt improve students as writers. He will always find a way to make the class interesting.
I visited his office hour 4 time for help in my essay and he always ask me question that I couldnt answer. He never gave any useful feedback I could use and avoided giving any guide/direction to help you write better. He always give this as a answer Im not writing your paper and if i do give you a advice, you would be writing my paper.
I've been in the country for not too long but professor Farley made writing very interesting to me. Participation in class matters a lot. If you go to office hours he'll consider it when he grades your work. The downside is he doesn't provide much feedback unless you show up to office hours. I went twice during the semester and got an A.
I don't understand why professor Farley has so many bad ratings, but he honestly is a great professor. He is hilarious and adorable. Yes, he may ask a lot of questions that you can't answer, but you can consider his questions when you write. The only downside is, you don't have a clear rubric as to what he wants, so his grading is a bit harsh.
Do not take this class. The lack of concern this professor had for his students during a pandemic was clear. He gives vague prompts and tares apart your paper non-constructively. We had a total of about 6 essays throughout the semester, and he didn't even view 4 of them (I checked the google docs), and graded based on the final paper. Worst. Prof.
The professor acted liked he cared about us and proceeded to not grade any essay submissions or give any feedback. He wanted us to go to office hours but they never lined up with my schedule and he never answered any emails regarding that. If you went to office hours he would not help but ask vague questions that made no sense.
Very misleading and unclear. Spends the entire class going off on tangents ( as most english teachers do), and saying corny jokes. Doesn't give great writing advice, and is not willing to help. Do not believe or accept his professional advice about your writing, make sure to get a second opinion. Overall annoying and waste of time.
Mr Farley is another woke political activist posing as a writing instructor.
Careful with this guy. He has a reputation of not treating everyone fairly. Definitely a critical race theorist. Espoused Marxist ideas
Professor Farley is a really solid choice if you're taking WRT 102. The reason for that is that he has very high expectations. If you go to office hours he will give valuable constructive criticism. To some, this level of criticism may seem insulting, but this criticism helped elevate my papers and easily pass the portfolio.
Writing 102 with Dave Chappelle
Professor Farley gives great feedback when you ask him but you should go to office hours. Not everything is due exactly when its specified its due so there's some flexibility if you can't make a deadline. He is funny in class and participation/attendance is a big thing for sure. Overall, really solid teacher and definitely recommend.
He's very eccentric. Has weird standards for a WRT 102 class. I took an upper division writing class at the same time and had to put more effort into 102. His advice isn't super helpful in office hours, I'd go for the extra points for your grade, but just go to the learning center 100x more helpful.
His class isnt terrible but does cause unnecessary stress. Also, personally going to him during office hours was never beneficial to me since he never seemed to actually help me but found different reasons to critique my work.
I thought Wilbur was a chill dude. Take his class if you actually want to improve your writing. I thought my writing was decent, but Wilbur critiqued my writing style very directly in office hours. Address his critiques = you get an A. Also I lean somewhat to the right; every professor in SBU is left. Just don't write Ayn Rand shit and you're fine.
I actually kind of liked him as a professor. In most classes, he would go off-topic and ramble. Very VERY relaxed with due dates, just get the work in. Sometimes his feedback isn't really clear, but overall pretty good.
Genuinely looked forward to his classes. He is very accessible outside of the class and helps you tremendously with the portfolio. Workload isn't too much. Attending office hours is highly suggested. He is very helpful and advocates for his students. Would definitely take another course of his.
Farley really gets his students. He's VERY engaging in class and will easily provide assistance outside of it. I personally had to revise my final research essay during the semester after his class and he met with me weekly for an hour and guided me through the process exceptionally. I truly learned from this course that you get what you put in.
Incredibly unhelpful during office hours. Has a condescending attitude and will go off on tangents for no reason. He literally will answer your question with another question and you'll pretty much end up with no actual feedback on your essays. He thinks he's being profound and intelligent when in reality he just spews BS.
Beware, he is overrated. His lectures may be fun, but his office hours are horrible. He does not offer good feedback as all he would do is critiquing your papers or asking you vague questions like "why did you do this?" So his office hours leave you even more lost. Even though I put a lot of effort into my papers, I did not pass the portfolio.
Farley was such a character (in a very good way). He was super engaging and fun to listen to for two times a week. Although he often went off on tangents about things, he helped me change my mindset on writing, which helped in passing the portfolio. There isn't much work done in lecture, so a lot of it has to be done out of class, though.
I was very nervous on my first day with Professor Farley due to some concerning reviews I read beforehand. Ten minutes into class, he completely changed my mind. I always looked forward to coming to class due to his teaching style, jokes, and lively energy. His office hours were always fun, and I always appreciated his honest feedback.
Work is light but piles up during the end of the semester. I never went to office hours, just pay attention in class and do the work and it's an easy grade. Farley values true writing so as long as you can explain your work you're good. There's a curve for the class progress to make sure everyone gets at least a C. Portfolio is super easy to pass.
I thought his class was okay, there are definitely better professors for WRT102 so I suggest you take it with them. But overall, he's not a bad teacher. He mostly yaps a lot in class, so it's basically a class where you can do other work. I would say he can give harsh feedback but I would say the writing assignments are not too bad.
Farley's class was fun, but you will be required to write several essays at once, and there's not really a clear date distinction. Doesn't really matter as long as they're all done by the end of the semester though. Lectures were pretty useless and they were only there for him to answer questions, but attendance was mandatory. Harsh critiquer also.
If you don't want to improve, drop it. Keep this if you will work hard and make an effort to stand out, he will notice, and you will come out of the class with a good grade. I don't doubt that there are definitely other WRT 102 professors who are an easier A, but he gives such good feedback and will always expect what he thinks you can accomplish
his lectures were mandatory and not helpful. hated going because he would just ramble. he's not very good with feedback either. but! if you go to office hours he gives decent advice, it's just really indirect. moderate amount of work in this class, but he's really lenient.
Good professor, really wants you to do well and improve during the semester. However, lectures were sometimes confusing and the way some things were taught were a bit hard to follow and understand
