Lots of note taking, besure to do all the readings and u should be okay.
Lectures are long, but he mixes in alot of Matrix, Star Treak, & Rage Against the Machine to liven it up. Get the study guides from the net...they really help!
Pretty cool layback teacher. Just go to class, and use the study guides and the sample tests he post up, study those and you should be fine.

Class was boring. Uses powerpoint presentations as his lecture. Be ready to take lots of unnecessary notes. Interesting subjects. Uses new films to explain theories. If you can sit through his lectures you should be fine.
He is a really smart teacher and he really knows his stuff. He isn't the most animated presenter, but he has some entertaining anecdotes. If you pay attention, you'll learn a lot. If you need help, or just want to talk philosophy, he is extremely helpful in office hours.
Mr. Heusser was a great teacher! Very helpful when one inquired! Philosophy is a little hard to understand but he will do his best to explain it to you!
Not much feedback, none in a timely manner. Notes and presentations are very unorganized and can be confusing. Assignments were not graded in a timely manner and almost all were not responded to by the teacher.
what a cracker! he just needs to have a clamer sense of self with more self-esteem. He suffers from stage fright.
Will is an awesome professor, is a very hard class if you don't pay attention and just screw around. If you put in some effort and use his office hours, class is great and easy. Wasn't to excited about taking the class when I joined, but loved philosophy when I left. I strongly recommend Will.
Tought subject, but he's the guy to teach it. Very intelligent, clear on the homework, and details what test will be about. The final is open notes!
Don't have him! Not helpful.
Nice guy, but was hard to stay awake in his class.
Will is an awesome teacher. His class is very straightforward and he gives you plenty of opportunities to earn a good grade in his class. This was my favorite class last semester.
Very cool professor
It was my first online class, although it was confusing at first, he made it simple.
Prof. Heusser was a great teacher. His on-line course was extremely clear, well presented, and fair. I really admire his knowledge in his field and his break-it-down ability for us mortals to understand. I really enjoyed philosophy thanks to him and actually learned a lot about myself. He gives plenty of preperation for tests and quizzes. Take him!
This is the type of class you should take at school. I took it online and regretted it at the end because I ended up with a C. If I took it at school I would have gotten a good grade. He has presentations and notes online but still it didn't work out for me.
hard subject, fair teacher
Excellent Teacher, very accomodating. Would take again if i had the chance.
The second easiest class I have ever taken in Cypress. He is extremely helpful and very fun to work with. 2 exams, 1 can be dropped. U can use 3 by 5 card. The final is open notes. 2 page paper and 1 presentation. If you cannot get an A in this class, then there is some thing wrong with you.
Super nice teacher! The best philosophy teacher no doubt. His lecture is a bit boring but it is philosophy anyways but he tries to keep it entertaining as possible. 1 presentation called PRACT. 3 tests but u get to drop the lowest one. 2 hw packages. i highly recommend u do the hw! its really easy but its worth a lot! GREAT TEACHER! TAKE HIM!
He knows philosophy very well, but he doesn't know how to teach it very well. I had to drop, he was making me too nervous when he was asking us if we understand him or not and most of us really didn't.
I took the online course and enjoyed it. All the info was available and he was very patient with locked exams and computer issues. Lots of writing but none of his assignments were lame. He also stays involved and gives good feedback.
I love Will! He's such an awesome teacher. Take his Eastern Religions class if you can...we mostly watch interesting videos and slide shows! We also had a field trip to a Buddhist temple that was really cool.
took his class online. He can be very confusing and may grade a little hard, but if you actually read the book, then you will do okay. I didnt even read the book and i still got a C
His lectures are somewhat hard to understand with all the philosophy lingo. I think his class would be easier if you had a deep interest in philosophy already. He's an easy grader with simple assignments. Just read the textbook to help you on the tests if you can't understand his lectures. He's always available and open to any questions too.
he lost my paper and didnt start grading the midterm until we were in class taking the final. he doesnt make things clear at all, he answers all questions with more questions...but he is a nice guy, i have to give him that.
What is he talking about? I was lost the entire semester in his class and didint know what he was talking about. Not organized at all. However he is always there to help and his office hours work really well. How i passed IDK
So Professor Heusser is a nice guy but his lectures are SOOOO boring...mostly because he rambles on and on and on in a monotonous way. I did all of his work and went to class. Although 6 hard classes that semester, I still managed an A. Oh, and do extra credit & ask questions!
Really nice guy..but the lectures are very boring and monotone. Half the things I was lost on but I did pass. Not too clear on explaning things. I also took his Eastern Religions class and I enjoyed that..I thought I would enjoy him for critical thinking but I turned out to be wrong.
Mr. Heusser refuses to answer emails (at least generally speaking). I took his online class and if you expect to receive your final grade in a timely manner, you are in for a surprise. Communication is horrible. He had potential of being a great teacher but I would never take his class again.
Finished last assignment Mar. 15th and still do not have my on line grade. Writes rude remarks back when you ask for a rush on a grade for a transcript deadline to another University. I think because he is dept. chair he feels indestructable. /he teaches live and on line and is overloaded.
Professor is unclear in what he requires, completely unhelpful and rude. Would not recommend him to anyone!
I took this class online and it ended October 17, I still do not have my grade. The class itself is not that bad. You will have to read the book and the lectures/slide shows to get a B or A. Extra credit is offered. My recommendation is read ahead, don't wait until last minute and you should be fine.
I took Professor Heusser for Fall 2009 online & grades are not posted yet. He is well knowledged with philosophy and uses high vocabulary. His works were quite challenging and exams were hard. Do not expect an A in the class if you are not dedicated to reading nor studying. You must be well disciplined to take him, especially for an online course.
Teacher is very unclear and never keeps his word. 7 classes this semester and he is the last one to put in grades and still has to grade 6 more items. He is not professional and I don't know how he is a professor. It is December 30 and still no grades. I guess we have to wait to Spring Semester to get our grades.
took this class online. This guy still hasnt posted grades from the middle of the semester. I put a lot of effort into getting a good grade but I still have no idea what I'm getting. At one point he said he would post grades on an assignment within a few days. That was over a month ago...still no grades. This dude sux.
I took this course during Fall 2009. This class was difficult.. you really have to put effort into this class in order to pass. I ended up getting an A though. If you study and try hard enough it is possible to pass with an A. I would recommend this class to students who enjoy learning and would put their extra effort into it.
This class rocked, it was a bit hard to get an A but it was well worth it, I think you need to take this class in person so you get discussions and the such, having a philo class online seems as smart as taking a PE class online. I went in not nowing what to expect and wanted to actaully learn something new and thats exactly what I got out of it.
3 tests drop the lowest one. Homework is turned in on the lecture after the test. You can use index cards with notes on the test.
He's such an easy teacher! I forgot to turn in some study guide for the first homework packet, but he gave me full point! His study guides are very helpful. I would definitely recommend him to anyone even for nonnative speakers.
not the easiest class. lots of reading in order to understand the class. Overall Heusser is not a hard or easy. the subject is hard but i would recommend him, he's always on track and explains more if you ask. 3 exams including final and drops the lowest one which could only help you out. Discussions could be online or written or you can do a paper
I took the online version of this class. It requires you to write about a page response to a philosophical question each week (14-16 total responses). There are also 2 exams and a 3 page essay about a movie that you have to write. Only take this class if you can stay on top of weekly assignments, if you can do that it's pretty easy to get an A.
He's a good teacher. He explains well. He even lets you have index cards with notes on exam. Homework is not turned in on exam day.It is turned in the lecture after the exam. In the end, I got A in the class. I would recommend him to anyone who doesn't want to take other class to fulfill critical thinking requirement.
This class was a bit on the difficult side (at least for me o.o) and showing up to class is IMPERATIVE. You really have to pay close attention to everything he says, which can be hard because he's a little monotone. Read the textbook, it'll help immensely. Not a lot of homework, and he allows note cards on exams. :D
He's a great teacher. Very nice and helpful. You can email him or talk to him after class or office hours. Class is hard if you miss any days and don't read the textbook everyday. It can eas to get behind as homework is turned in as a packet after the exam. So do your homework daily!!
just dont.
This is NOT an easy course. Took an online class; alot of content is crammed into each week. Textbook use is low, you can even get by without one. Weekly discussions which are fairly easy; the exams are difficult and really test your knowledge on the concepts of philosophy. You can tell he's a good teacher, really into his work. I'd take it again.
Took an online class. It is time-consuming, but it's not difficult. Textbook use is nonexistent, don't bother buying the books, everything is covered in powerpoints. Just do the weekly discussions and you'll be fine. He offers extra credit, the exams are tough but he grades on a curve. I didn't have any problems at all with Heusser.
I've taken other online classes, & I wouldn't recommend this one.
This professor is very difficult. Grading papers and posting grades is not a priority for him at all. Maybe this course is easier in a classroom setting. I do not advise taking this course online, or this professor for that matter.
Very engageing and underatanding. Pushes you to learn.
The class is super confusing but if you do all his handouts you should understand the material. Practice all the proofs and tables and Venn diagrams before test and use your notecard wisely. Anyone could get B, A would be hard
Huesser is entertaining and very understanding. He gives frequent grade bumps to the point where you gain a whole letter grade. He assigns tons of homework from the book, but he posts the answers on blackboard and you can just turn in those and get full credit. The class is very confusing, but pretty much impossible to get lower than a C.
He is a nice guy but this class is so boring. I liked the Monty Python clips but that was all. He does a good job of explaining the subject. There is enough homework for practice but it is underwhelming which is good. The class is easy but don't expect to be thrilled. It is boring. The PRACT presentation was annoying. The tests are easy.
He is great. I don't know why he deserves negative comments. The class materials is the same level of difficulty no matter who you take with. He lets you have index card with notes on tests, which not all teachers do that. I got an A in the class even though I'm not a native speaker of English. I recommend his class to a friend and she also got A.
The coursework was made up of 16 weekly discussions (posts and responses), 3 MC Quizzes, 3 MC Exams, and 1 optional essay assignment. Overall, Heusser is pretty straightforward and would recommend him if you need to take this course for Gen Ed Requirements. I got an A by the end of the semester too!
I've taken several of Prof. Heusser's classes, all online, and have found him to be pretty laid back. The grading process takes a while because he goes over the discussion boards in batches and reads EVERYTHING. He's not lazy, just extremely thorough. He also provides detailed slideshows. I recommend his Ethics class.
Great Class, if you do the work you can get an A!
Awesome Instructor. Responds to emails in a timely manner. Extra Credit is offered. Exams are difficult so be sure to complete all the discussion boards and do the Analysis paper. Stay on top of things and you will pass.
Awesome professor :) Good grader and gives extra credit. Tests are easy if you study regularly. Super easy class. Strongly recommend him. A++++
great teacher
He is a really good teacher.
I have taken a couple of Mr. Heusser's classes and have enjoyed each one. He is very organized and provides detailed information on what he expects in his class.
Fast feedback! You will be able to get A easily if you do discussion, few quizzes and exams. All the discussion questions are interesting!
Cool professor. Gives extra credit, good study material, responds to your email, and grades fairly. Complete all discussions, study hard, and you should pass most tests.
There is a lot of reading. If you do it, you will pass with no problem. Discussion boards have good topics.
This class is great. You'll enjoy all the discussions.
If you take this online during summer, prepare to WORK! Class is advertised as 5 weeks, but it's really just 4.5 weeks. Very intense. You will not pass if you do not stay on top of the required discussion boards.
Professor was very organized and thoughtful.
Very organized and is clear with each lesson. Good discussion topics! Another plus is that he offers extra credit.
I took his online PHIL 100 class and I really enjoyed it. If you have never taken an online class, take his class!! Although, you might get spoiled by how great it is. This online class made me feel like I was part of a community of learner and I actually liked it more than an actual class. The online format feels more intimate and interactive.
I took the 5-week accelerated course so it was alot of work to finish in 5 short weeks. 16 dicussions (3perweek), 3 tests (with optional paper to drop lowest test), and 3 quizzes. Prof is very helpful and detailed and sends out reminders constantly. It can be hard to understand all the concepts on your own but you can always ask for help.
I took his summer online class, which is 5 weeks long. The class isn't hard, but there's a lot of work (e.g. tons of reading, 16 discussion boards, 3 quizzes, 3 tests, an optional analysis paper). Just stay on top of things and you should be fine.
If I can be honest, the professor was absolutely awesome. You could tell he was inerested in not just the students engaging in discussion boards, but he wanted to see us successful for the online course. He was patient, allowed us to stay in direct communication with him, and reiterated assignmentsdeadlines throughout the week. AWESOME!!
Prof. H is amazing. Took this class to learn more about myself and my values as an individual and came out enlightened. Lots of reading, but it's philosophy so what else do you expect? Great class, prof H will challenge you to reach deep within your soul and you will challenge yourself for consistency and truth A must-take class for life in general
I found the class to interesting. There is a lot of reading and discussions. As long as you do all the work you should be able to get a passing grade.
This class is difficult and must be ready to study for the tests. The professor is very intelligent and knows how to teach the subject. He also has some interesting documentaries that he shows to the class. He is very helpful and loves to make the class work as a group which is awesome!
great class
Helpful teacher, shares philosophically-themed jokes, and if I ever needed help I knew that he would respond.
Professor Heusser is very clear with all his assisgnments. He makes sure to explain every assignment and it's due dates thoroughly. Assignments are mainly discussion boards. He drops lowest exam! And there is an Optional Paper at the end. Overall, he is a great professor!
The Professor is very detailed oriented. He will remind you of what's due on the course in advance. He's also really god with replying email. He drops the lowest score on exam by providing assigned paper too. Overall, i enjoyed my OL class with him.
a lot of discussions, exams are tough and worth a lot of points overall good class. stay ahead by doing the discussion post
Great teacher! Sometimes topics were confusing at first but after a few examples became a walk in the park. There is one project (paper&speech) that you can do with a partner if you want. Drops the lowest test grade and is very helpful. He explains things well and helps you understand and is willing to work with you. Tests are also pretty easy.
I had a chance to speak to him over the Phone and he was very helpful, he explained thoroughly each area in which I had questions, Phil is not an easy subject, but he made it more enjoyable, the material he provided had the ideas clearer than the actual books. I will definitely take another Phil class just because I enjoyed it so much with him.
The class itself is not easy, but he made it as clear as possible. His contagious passion for Philosophy makes you want to enjoy the class . There are several ways to earn credit and he is always available, returns emails and answers questions, he is very approachable.
The class material it's not the easiest, but the teacher' assignments become very useful when trying to understand it. He is very funny, and understandable.
This was my first online course & I am very glad I took this course. The professor is great. All of the stuff you need to know is provided for you in his Power Points. It is a really great course you just need to be available so that you can put time & effort into the course. You'll sure enjoy this course.
I really enjoyed this class. It's actually very easy. I never used the textbook, studied and I was still able to pass the class with a B. His online organization is amazing, and he has such a contagious passion for this subject. :)
Overall, I thought the class was great. It was an online class so there wasn't a lot for me to expect besides a lot of reading (which there was), but there were also a lot of discussions through BB as well. There were only three exams total (non-cumulative) as well as three quizzes. His PowerPoints and study guides helped a lot with tests.
discussions and quizzes will save your score if you mess us a little on the tests
challenging online course
I really enjoyed the class. I didn't know what to expect because this was my first philosophy class but I really learned a lot. It was actually the first time a professor for an online class was this organized and I was extremely grateful for that. He also sends out emails every week reminding you about assignments so you won't fall behind
For an online class especially a somewhat challenging subject, I have learned a lot and really got into it. Will is very organized and really knows his stuff! If I were a Philosophy major, I would definitely take more of his subjects so I could learn more.
Had him for online class. 3 quizzes. 3 tests. 1 Optional Analysis paper if you wanna drop one test. 16 discussion boards. Just take notes of your textbook readings and you should be able to get an A. Tests are not too difficult. Interesting discussion board topics. Would highly recommend.
3 Tests include Final and 3 quizzes but they are all easy if you studied.
The class is some dense material. It was interesting nonetheless. You need the textbook to do the homework packets.
Professor Heusser is very nice and occasionally funny, but he's a very monotone and straight forward teacher. This doesn't discredit his ability to teach, but if you aren't able to focus with a monotone teacher, he's not for you. In order to understand anything in his class, you need to ask questions in class or go to him during office hours.
Very clear in what he expects. Very straight-forward class! I enjoyed it!
Professor Heusser explains things clearly and allows students opportunities to succeed. There is a lot of reading and the tests are difficult, however he allows enough time on the exams; unlike some other professor's. You really have to think on these questions.
Great professor! Great humor! Really enjoyed the class, highly recommend
I recommend taking his classes. He is very on top of everything. I am taking him for an online class and he has been the best online professor i have taken by far. The deadlines are very clear which makes it very easy to schedule time for the work due.
I got an easy A from his online class, and you get to watch the Matrix.
As long as you keep up with the discussion boards and do well on the tests and quizzes you will Ace the class. Professor is awesome.
The class was very straightforward. All of his discussions and weakly schedule were already listed, so it was possible to work ahead. I think he would be a funny teacher if taken from campus; he always had a weekly joke to tell. Overall I really enjoyed the class, and I might actually take another philosophy course.
The power points are amazing and contains good information very helpful and organize to review for the test
I feel that Philosophy is best enjoyed as an online class. Regardless, P. Heusser did a great job in selecting enjoyable topics. My advice would be to read ahead of time and take good notes. Also, even though he allows dropping of low scores or optional assignments it's best to do all of them. Stay organized and enjoy!
Insanely nice and accommodating.
Just do the Discussions once a week and quizzes when they are do, and you'll do fine
I would rate this Professor with a high score. Each discussion board was well thought out and Professor Heusser, made a change in my education but also in my own moral values and ethical views. His humor also made the stress level low. Overall my Professor was a 5.
A difficult class to teach. I appreciated the effort.
Interesting discussion posts every week, three exams/quizzes, optional analysis paper, and polls/surveys at the beginning and end of the class. Do the study guides because they will help you learn and do well on the test. He is willing to help students. Overall a great professor!
I was impressed with this Professor's attention to our online class. Despite his many responsibilities, he was always timely with updates and made himself very available. A lot of reading involved, but it's worth it. Discussions are inspiring and I can honestly say I'm walking away from this class with a different view of the world. Great teacher!
Took an accelerated 8 week class online, so there was a lot of reading, and discussions crammed in. Quizzes and exams were not too tough. Just read the material and study guide to be prepared and have the book with you during the exam. Good teacher with good insight and thoughtful weekly assignments.
I was not sure what to expect with this class, but had a positive experience. The material he gives helps with all quizzes and exams. Do the reading and you will be fine. Discussion Board questions really struck a cord and made me grow as an individual. I would highly recommend this class.
Interesting subject. A couple of quzzies, 3 exams (lowest scored gets dropped if you do the paper) and 16 discussion boards.
He's quite organized
Professor Heusser challenged us on our thoughts but gave us the opportunity to express towards how we felt personally. Not only does this course teach you how to analyze, you also learn how to view things in a different perspective. Prof. Heusser devotes a great amount of of personal effort & interest to this course as well as his students.
Professor Heusser does a great job on getting his student involve in the material by having weekly discussion boards due every Saturday before midnight. Quizzes can be taken multiple times. There are three exams and an analysis paper with the lowest score dropped. He has ethical jokes of the week that make an online class a little more enjoyable.
Teacher provides a lot of study material for the class, which are very useful for the exams.
This class was largely spent online in discussion forums with broad questions for reflection. If you read the textbook (which wasn't too dense or long), participate in the forum and study an hour or two per exam (3), you'll do fine.
Professor Heusser is an excellent teacher. He is engaging, funny, and provides tremendous study resources. I took his online class, discussions are vital. You must stay on top of the reading from the textbook because, while the quizzes are easy, the tests are tough. A great class, great teacher, highly recommended! Philosophy is complex
Great professor for Phil 100. He really makes you think deep about philosophy & become more aware of undiscovered mysteries in our world and universe through his online class discussions. Too much books and articles to study for quizzes/exams, but you just only need to read the main textbook to grasp the concepts/topics well. Study smart for A+!
I had Professor Heusser for Introduction to Philosophy and he was awesome. He had a clear passion for the subject and even made some jokes now and again. He's funny. The class was easy for me, but others didn't do so well on tests. Just pay attention in class lectures, raise your hand to ask questions, and read the book. I definitely learned a lot.
Prof. Heusser has a very mellow and calm demeanor, I cannot even recall a time I saw him get angry or frustrated. He is straightforward in regards to his expectations and grading criteria. If you are interested in the subject matter and pay attention, you will succeed. I consider him to be of the highest caliber of professors I have encountered.
Prof. Heusser is very passionate about Philosophy as well as his students. This was a tough subject for me within itself. There was a discussion board every week, 3 quizzes, 2 or 3 exams (I forget) and an extra credit paper available. The discussion boards were my favorite, they include interesting exercises that make you think. Would take again!
Heusser is very passionate, but phil. as a subject is difficult. There were only exams in my class. Definitely a class that needs time dedicated outside of lecture. Extra credit journals and essay due at the end of the semester. Cool dude, cool vibes. Definitely recommend making a study group to keep up with lectures and the class in general.
Prof Heussuer is a funny and informatic person. He did a great job in the online class with sending all the information we needed for everything. As this was an online class he wasn't really keen with responding emails, he responds usually 1 week later. Tests aren't bad as long as u make good notes and awnser the question on the DB philisophically.
Prof. Heusser makes you work for your grade. He doesn't respond to email very well but he tries his best to help every student. I really enjoyed his class but will admit that it was tough. His Discussion Board and Exams make up a good portion of your grade, so take good notes. There are a few extra credit opportunity that I would take advantage of.
Also took PHIL160 online. Both courses - difficult to grasp & very heavy content(concepts, reading, lecture) While knowledgeable in the subject, his lectures can be confusing bc the concept itself is confusing. The coursework is not too much, but the content itself can make it difficult. Go to class, study, ask for help, do assignments - youll be ok
He's very intelligent and gave us some excellent talking points and assignments. Our discussions were very interesting and though he would push us to solidify our beliefs and bring awareness to our belief tensions he didn't grade harshly if he didn't agree. I've chosen to take another one of his courses. Only downside is he is a bit slow to respond
All the ratings are surprisingly really high but I think a few of them are from summer. This professor does not believe in giving full credit, he says so straight up on his syllabus. Tests are out of 200 points, he says he'll drop most missed questions but never does. Summer online class, took two weeks to respond to emails. Hard class for summer.
Professor Heusser is a great teacher! When signing up for this class I read negative reviews that scared me, but honestly If you work for it you will get a good grade. He gives an extra credit analysis paper which I recommend if you didn't do to well on test. Most importantly STUDY FOR THE TEST, the powerpoints help a lot! Very interesting class!
you have 2 discussion boards a week, 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and an analysis paper. I didnt do to well on the exams but he drops the lowest one. a lot of work but pretty interesting. he just took a while to get final grading in but he is easy to reach. an A is very possible
This was a really interesting class and I enjoyed taking it. The lectures were interesting and he provided a lot of information and different view points on the topic. Tests werent too hard if you do the reading and take notes in class.
Took this class during the pandemic and there's so much work to do with such little clarity. I don't mind the work load, but there was seven paragraphs to read that provided little info on the class itself. Be prepared to teach yourself
He grades Discussion Board posts late.
Extremely pretentious as an online professor. SO MUCH reading (though I got by without doing any) + weekly discussion boards. Hard to contact online. Probably most confusing and disorganized class I've ever taken, and the exams are HARD and don't even follow the readings. He doesn't grade anything until the very end of semester, does offer e.c.
Well, when I signed up for this class I saw the reviews and they weren't too bad. The Professor gives you all the info for the class up front, but then is disengaged for the rest of the class. Does not interact with discussions or tell you how you did to improve. Tests are auto graded but didn't receive final grade until 2 months later.
His instructions and announcements are VERY wordy (confusing). Discussion boards (majority of grade) every week, 3 Exams (one can be dropped for a Paper). He doesn't grade discussions until the end of semester, so you don't know your grade until all assignments are completed which is stressful. You don't get feedback unless you email him.
He's extremely wordy and there are tons of useless links and pages on canvas that make it very confusing to navigate and read through. He doesn't give feedback on anything you write unless you ask for it. This professor is meh but it's an easy class. It's literally just disc posts and exams. Also you can get by without reading the textbook at all.
Canvas page is kinda unorganized & its hard to find stuff so I'd say take his class in person if possible but you can see he's truly passionate about philosophy and is trying to help students get the best grade possible. he offers extra credit and drops you lowest exam score for a paper and he considers effort and participation in your final grade.
