He lectures straight out of the book. He doesn't give extra credit. You can skip class as long as you keep up with the book. He adds another chapter of orgo at the end which makes the final pretty hard. The best 2045 teacher is Dr. Land.
Dr. Harrison is a good teacher. He does stick to the book, but he is very helpful if you ever have a question.
If you don't keep up with the reading and homework, the class gets really hard. Also, watch out which TA you get.
His lectures are straight from the book. You have to keep up with the reading or you will fall behind.
dont take harrison!!!take anybody else available!!!!!!!
Lectures straight from book, really no need to go to class. Tests are of average difficulty, but definite studying is required. Seems like a very nice guy although i never spoke with him personally. TA was a freakin wacko!
Doesn't teach. Photocopies the book and puts it on powerpoint. You can totally skip class and do all right as long as you read the book. Vala is about a zillion times better. The TAs aren't all very good, either.
His chem test are the easiest and if you know what you're doing, you don't even need to go to class. I strongly recommend this to people that are somewhat familiar with some chemistry.
doesn't teach, uses powerpoint straight from the book, very unclear!
Does not really give examples of problems (except from the book). Very nice; will help with anything if you go to office hours. Chemistry is a difficult subject, and he is not bad, but he should work more problems on the board.
TEACHES STRAIGHT FROM BOOK; NICE BUT A LITTLE BORING; NO HOMEWORK; TESTS ARE DIFFICULT BUT STUDYING PAST EXAMS WILL HELP ALOT-DIRECT,DOES'T TRY TO TRICK YOU.
Teaches from the book and easy to understand. I got a 4 on the AP Chem test, but still learned a lot from him. Never did homework and still got an A. Tests are moderately easy, but studying is definitely required for them. Lectures aren't boring either.
This class is easy to get a B+ in but an A is harder to get. There isn't any extra credit in this class like others. The tests are average and the final is harder. The teacher knows the material, but he makes it completely boring because he lectures the book on powerpoint. A really fast pace class!
Good: No need to go to class. Fairly Easy Quizes and Tests. Bad: Class average is fairly low (some other chem classes have an A average). No extra credit at all. Grades: Final = 200 pts; Tests = 300 pts; Quizes = 100 pts 500+ = A 460+ = B+ 430+ = B
bad teacher, doesn't teach in lectures just shows sample problems from the book, pointless to go to class, tests are next to impossible, any other teacher is better
He is a good professor who is willing to help students all the time. If you study hard, you can learn a lot in a class and what is wrong with showing powerpoint? He really respects students, which is a rare quality missing in many professors today. Why not let it be a bit more challenging?
good teacher with easy quizzes as said. It will prepare you better for chm2046 if you do well in his class.
Well I'm just terrible a chemistry, so this class confused me. He's a very nice man and is willing to help, but the tests were ridiculously hard. My TA was great and the quizzes were easy though. There isn't any required HW, so if you cannot motivate yourself, go to a class with OWL homework.
Everything is straight from the book. I pretty much taught myself everything, and had friends in 2046 teach me. The tests are very hard, but can be prepared for easily by doing all the practice exams that he has on webct.
This teacher does not teach. He just shows you powerpoints that don't explain anything. I had to learn everything myself from the textbook and the tests were hard.
He speaks in monotone which for me meant instant sleep every time i went to class. His lectures are uninteresting and other teacher will have easier tests and grading scales.
very boring, asks questions to himself, i guess used as a teaching method but to me was just confusing. very hard tests, where the questions were pulled from i'm not sure. find another teacher.
Tests and quizzes were fairly easy. I didn't go to class (kind of boring). Mostly first semester freshmen in the class so they thought it was hard, they need to learn how to study.
Extremely boring
Boring. I might as well read the book. He practically recites the book anyway.
Nice guy. Chemistry is challenging no matter who the teacher is. Be prepared to read the book and do the hw problems suggested. I really like how his powerpoints were online; i used them as an outline as i read the book. Quizzes are easy and tests fair because practice quizzes/tests are online.
With some understanding on High School Chemistry, going to lectures, and doing the practice problems suggested, this class is not very difficult. If chemistry isnt your thing, could be difficult.
teaches straight from the book, GET THE GREY SOLUTIONS MANUAL AND STUDY GUIDE!!! that's how i got an 'A'.
His lectures put me to sleep and he wasn't very good at explaining things to students. He talks over your head. If you can recite the book from memory, you'll do well in the class.
i like him :) hes pretty clear in his lectures. if u took ap or ib chem in high school the class is a breeze but my friends who didnt are struggling. he has funny jokes in his slides like "atoms have mass? i didnt even know they were catholic." lol harrison u get me every time
I love chem and he's a good teacher. I e-mailed him one day and within like and hour he had responded and lengthened the due date so the people could fix OWL.
His class- easy. Discussion classes- easy. Clicker quizzes and quizzes in the discussion group- easy. Test- rediculously hard! He's nice and funny, but he doesn't help teach the problems, stuff that will be on the test. He tells you about the people who started it all and came up with the questions, which really doesn't help you at all on the test.
Go to class for clicker questions. OWL can be a pain in the butt. He tends to ask himself questions and stutter. My TA pretty much told us what would be on the quizzes, so they weren't that bad. But tests are SO hard!! His practice exams are NOTHING like the exams, so make sure to get study previous Horvath exams.
If you can't memorize a textbook line for line your deadman walking. His lectures sound like Ben Stein reading an encyclopedia.
He doesnt help teach the problems very much, but neither does anyone else. What he does do that very little of the other teachers do is teach the theory behind the concepts. He gives you the "why you need to know this" and relates chemistry to everyday life. I would recommend his. The quizes and clickers are easy. get horvaths old tests.
he's a great teacher. he does his best to really make sure everyone understands the material. When he gives clicker questions, he uses them to make sure people get it. Makes small jokes to keep class interested. & he is very approachable & tries to be as helpful as possible
He's a funny old man. However his teaching can be a but boring. Nevertheless he's extremely helpful. He gave clicker quizzes so that we got as many of them correct as possible. My TA for his class was sooooooo laid back, but unfortunately the tests were really hard.
Horrible teacher if you are aimming for an A in the class because the "common exams" are now written mainly by Horvath. Get Horvath's old exam if you want an A in the class. His clicker questions are crappy, boring teacher, though he is funny sometimes. Get out of his Class because you will suffer on the exams and it is not worth taking his clas
He was an ok professor but it didn't do any good because the tests are from Horvath. The class was pretty boring too.
Good teacher...easy to understand but just make sure that the test he will be giving are his because when i had him the test were standardized and Horvath has his imput on them..which made them RIDICULOUS..
He is a good professor, but the tests were ridiculous and not written by him. He teaches to his own tests but gives horvaths... watch it... study hard
A very boring class. Going to his lecture was almost pointless because it was slow, boring, and unexciting. He is a nice person, but when the lights went off and the overhead projecter came on, I was out. I ended up going to Dr. Vala's class in order to learn chemestry.
He's fun to listen to, helpful, very gentelmanly and a good teacher.
He's a really nice old man- but that's the thing, he's old and boring, haha. Tries to teach, but it just feels more like he's telling you the information than teaching it. If you have high school background, then it's really not bad at all. However, if you are chemistry impaired then you will have to read the textbook a lot. Tests are standardized
Clicker questions are ridiculous. If you haven't taken AP chem, sit next to someone who has. Nice sweet old guy, but he seems to get confused some times and his lectures don;t teach you what you need to know.
He doesn't teach you the material, he just goes through his power point really quickly. You'll end up learning the material yourself with the textbook. The good thing is that they rewrote the tests, so they're used by each chem teacher. I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher.
Had class at 7:25 AM. Went to class just for the clicker points. The clickers are easy for the most part. I would not have learned the material without having a good TA. Best advice is to do the practice tests and the end of the book problems. Also, get Dr. Mitchells practice tests because Harrison gives his own practice tests and they are easier
not the best of teachers, but gives pretty good reviews for tests. posts slides online, so you can focus more on what he is saying than trying to write it down. provides more than enough clicker points, so nothing to worry about if you always go to class.
Very nice man, but his voice is SOOO monotone! Its really kinda boring and at 725am ... you just fall asleep. I really only went to class for the clickers and kinda just taught myself the rest of it from the book. Do the practice tests and the hw questions are helpful. Not a bad class.
Be prepared to teach yourself.I did everything in that class myself.I went to everyone of his classes at 7:25 in the Fing morning.Clicker questions are BS.There are too many problems with them.He just reads off a powerpoint.Learn to teach buddy.Better off reading the textbook.Take another professor because this guy definitely does not motivate you.
Very boring. You have to go for clicker points every day, but you will sleep through the entire period.
Wow. Keafaber is the way to. I went to Harrisons pointless lectures only to have an A in the class all semester. But then when the final exam comes your like...wtf when did i ever learn this. avoid harrison at all costs
Absolutely horrible lecturer. I pretty much taught myself chemistry this semester. The entire lecture is based off of power point, which he speeds through at such a rate it is impossible to follow. Spends forever on theory and concepts when the tests are almost all equation-based. Explain things like how molecules fit together with his hands.
Horrible lecturer, had to basically teach myself everything. His clickers are the hardest out of all the teachers and the lowest points. He doesn't prepare you at all in preparation for the final, which is the most unfair test in this class
Horrible teacher! Super boring and basically recites the book during class. I learned nothing from the lectures and had to teach myself everything. Clicker questions are messed up. Tests weren't too bad but final was ridiculous, brought my grade from a solid A to a C+ TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Lectures are boring and not that informative. Do the OWL HW and do problems from the book and you'll be fine. Harrison is VERY helpful in office hours and not at all intimidating. A bright guy who will help you a lot one-one-one, but remember CHM 2045 is a weed out class!!
PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR! The class was unbelievably drab & painful. Not cooperative at all. In-class participation points were administered in the form of "clicker points" & I had a bunch of issues w/ my clicker not working & unlike every other professor, he refused to compensate me. The final was ridiculous & caused my grade to plummit. Steer clear
So boring. Fell asleep in every class. Knows what he's talking about but hard to pay attention to.
Harrison is a decent teacher but doesn't teach anything outside the book's content. Final was hard but I still managed an A.
He teaches by powerpoint and doesn't really explain the math problems clearly. but hes a good teacher and his quizzes aren't too hard. if you read the book you'll be fine. do all possible hw for more points.
Class was boring but you have to go to get clicker points, no worries you can sleep or talk in between clicker questions. Final was hard but not impossible, just read the text throughout the year to get an A. You can teach yourself the class.
quizzes are fair, tests...not so much, go to class for clicker points, do all the OWL and hope to whoever you pray to that the final is not like is was in Fall 2006
Terrible class. He is ridiculously boring. I fell asleep every day but my TA was helpful. He doesn't write the tests. Read the book.

He seems like a nice old man. But he does not know how, or what, to teach. He talks mostly of what reactions look like, and who so-and-so was. the kind of stuff thats not on the test. i basically have taught myself everything from the book. its like im paying my tuition to take the test, not learn! and btw my TA barely speaks english!
boring. doesnt really show how to work out problems.just goes over the stuff that goes around what you are learning
Don't take this class unless you love reading the book, which probably you don't. get someone else who actually teaches you the material, and does not read from power points made from the book. i heard martin was a lot better, take him or something. the test are not to bad though, just the basics, which makes his class more bearable
not too bad, just read the book and do the practice problems. I have an A
Not a hard class at all. Teaches right from the book and right for the tests. Students who don't do well should self reflect, since a lot of problems on the tests are directly from previous years. Not the hardest class to get an A in, definitely not one anyone should fail in.
He is so very boring that I could not pay attention and stopped going to class. Tests are difficult, but the book has most of the concepts and the TAs can be helpful. There is a curve.
Get a different professor for Chem 1. He's a funny guy and I genuinely enjoyed him as a person, however his lectures rarely helped prepare me for the test. All the Chem 1 professors give the same tests, so I'd really recommend trying to get a different professor.
Boring, not a good professor. Doesn't prepare you for exams. Get Mitchell instead if you can. He's more interesting, clearly communicates the material, and what's on the exam. I started going to his lecture instead and skipping mine. Most of his TA's aren't helpful either. For OWLS, have a friend in another section e-mail you the posted answe
do not choose this professor unless you want to have his period for nap time.He just reads through his power points and says "But you already know that". Honestly, if I did, I would not be in his class now would I? He seems like a nice guy and I do enjoy his random comic strips but he is not good at explaining the material AT ALL!!!!!!
Honestly, I would love it if this guy was my grandpa, but he is useless as a professor. When I would go to class I would just fall asleep so I stopped going and taught myself the material. The exams are pretty challenging but if you look at the old exams they are really helpful.
He is so boring. Just like everyone says nice guy but man, cannot teach. Get someone else.
Extremely boring chem teacher. Doesn't know how to teach or keep people interested. I stopped going to his lectures and went to Mitchells instead. He is a MUCH better teacher. Gethim if u can! Mitchell also gives a lot of extra credit on quizzes while Harrison does not.
Take any other professor for this class. Harrison really doesn't do his job or the class justice. Have to take same exams without the same background or possible extra points on quizzes.
I heard he was supposed to get fired last year, which totally explains his lack of enthusiasm/interest/ability to teach. Switch teachers while you can!
Overall, Professor Harrison's class was boring, and he wasn't that great a teacher. I usually did better by just reading the book carefully. Very thankful that the lowest test grade was dropped.
Great professor for analytical chem. I've heard horror stories about other teachers for this class, but he was always very helpful and clear. Teaches from the book and gives straightforward tests. Going to class helps because notes posten online are incomplete. Very nice guy, take analytical from him if at all possible.
absolutley terrible! get out now! his lectures had nothing to do with the tests and i ended up not even going. try to get mitchell. harrison is the worst by far
Awesome Professor for Analytic chem! compared to what else is out there if you can get Harrison you will get an A if you just learn the book.
Very boring professor. Switch out if you can. Just reads over powerpoints
He was very boring and read over the powerpoints. I went to his class in the beginning but by the end there is no reason to go. Just read over the book and go over past tests and you should be fine.
really nice old dude, but there is no point to going to his lecture because it is straight out of the book onto power point.if you read and understand the book, you should do excellent in the class.the lecture is more used for nap time than anything else.
the most useless professor ever. just read off powerpoints he copied out of the book that had nothing to do with the exams. do all the questions at the end of the book and read and u should be fine.
He seems like a very nice man, but going to his class will not help you on the tests or exams because he doesn't write them. I would recommend reading the book and doing all the suggested practice problems and exams, and you should be fine.
Has interesting theory to offer relative to the practical applications of analytical chemistry. However, the other 96% of the time is spent boring the f**k out of you with pointless sh*t that is totally irrelevant to the tests.... DO NOT GO TO CLASS....read the book, do the end of chapter problems he recommends, and look at his practice tests...
Yes, his tests are hard and you have to actually work. If you study and do old practice exams, do the comprehensive problems in the back of the back and if you go to CLC when you need help you will see a grade you want.
OMG...nice man but not really helpful...its really useless going to class, you end up teachng yourself or seeking help because you learn nothing in lecture...read the book, then read it again, then read it again...many ppl have changed their majors after these exams...STUDY HARD!!! p.s.
Lectures are incredibly boring, but he asks these in-class problems, and he will ask some of them on tests. He likes to ask conceptual questions on tests also, so you have to read the book carefully. But he's very nice and helpful, especially during office hours. You get to drop 1 out of 3 midterms, and there's the final.
Most people who do not do well in CHM 2045 for any section were NOT working hard enough. You can't get an A just by doing the minimum and if you are ACTUALLY trying and not doing well I would suggest going to CLC. Harrison's lecture is pretty pointless to go to, like everyone says. DO the HARDER problems in the back and study old tests.
Useless teacher, honestly pick someone else because you have to teach yourself. I don't care how nice he seems, as a teacher he's useless. 3 exams, 1 dropped and a final. He doesn't write the tests so no benefit of having him as a teacher. GET OUT!
How well you do in this class really depends on how much you already know about chemistry and how good you are at teaching yourself from a textbook. Harrison is a nice guy, but I would not recommend him as a teacher for this class, as he does not write the tests.
I never went to class; his lectures are pointless. Luckily, I had a good chemistry background from high school, and I think that's what saved me. If you have no chem background, choose a different professor. Otherwise, use the book, do lots of practice questions, go to tutoringzone and broward tutoring. PRACTICE A LOT. Study at least 1 hr/day.
His lectures are pretty much useless most of the time, I would see if you can find a better prof. If you're stuck, I'd still recommend going to class, because you need whatever help you can get in chem. Do the practice problems, go to tutoring, and keep up with the current material. It's a hard subject in general.
Lousy professor. Boring lectures that don't adequately prepare you for tests. Reads off an incomplete powerpoint. Classroom is unreasonably dark and his unstimulating lectures only put you straight to sleep. Study the book, do pract probs, and look over old tests. You will have to teach yourself :(
He is pretty useless, i went to his office hourse and he was really rude and unhelpful
Dr. Harrison's class is a waste of time. If you have him, switch to Mitchell or Gower. Mitchell will help a lot with the exams while Gower helps a lot with quizzes and gives exam tips. Harrison says nothing and is very relentless.
DO NOT take this professor for chemistry if you are trying to pass it. He spends more time explaining Elearning more than anything else. He doesn't adequately prepare you for exams and office hours wont help much either. I really wish I didn't take this class, but if you want to kill your gpa, i recommend this class!!
I went to class about the first 3 weeks of school and next time I saw him was when he proctored my final. lectures are completely useless, do all the practice problems in the book- they will prepare you for the quizzes. Do as many old exams as possible and TZ in order to do well on the exams.
This class is hard in general regardless of the professor but he did not make the class any easier. I went to his lectures through the end of the first exam and wish I would not have wasted my time. The quizzes were fairly easy though. Tutoring Zone is the only reason I did well in the class. Switch to Mitchell if possible.
I thought I'd do well since it's a lot of in-depth gen chem stuff but I failed the class... and I'm good at chemistry! Listen, don't take this class if you're thinking about minoring in chem, it's not worth the stress. He teaches awfully, off of powerpoints, and talks like you already know what he's teaching. I hated this class.
Not very clear, drifts off on topics, boring. Tests aren't that hard but you certainly need to STUDY!!! Tutoring Zone is a must!
Not clear, drifts off topic, teaches off of powerpoints, talks as if students already know the material, boring...making lecture pointless. His exams are multiple choice and he always has one or two questions involving something he mentioned in class to reward students who attend lecture. Helpful during office hours. Exams are easy; Final is awful!
If you are a ChemE, do not take this class unless you really want to get tested on memorization skills. You can get all the calculations right, but if you don't memorize his random little facts, you can still do pretty poorly on exams. Try taking biochem or inorganic; at least you'll learn something useful.
He's a nice person but he doesn't teach well. PASS the first exam! It's easy and they get harder after that one! If you can find another professor because honestly it's not worth the frustration. Drops one exam and you have a final. Attendance isn't mandatory and he puts you to sleep and makes you not want to learn.
He's a great guy, but his class in not. Make sure you don't get complacent in the beginning. I did and got a 50 on the first test. And the second. Make sure you understand Acid base chemistry BEFORE you start the material to be covered on the second test. And when I say understand, I mean without a doubt. 2nd test is the hardest.
His tests comprise of 10mc and 10problems. He doesn't teach you how to do the problems in class so you pretty much have to teach yourself. Even so, the problems aren't that bad it is the concepts. Make sure you know all the ones from the old tests + the concepts from his pp's + concepts from the textbook. No need to do the textbook problems.
Honestly, Harrison is fine. I don't know what kids are complaining about. He provides everything you need to succeed. As long as you read the book and do the practice problems he recommends, you're fine. His lectures are pretty boring though.
This class should be an easy A but this professor makes it difficult. His exams are difficult and extremely detail oriented. The calculation problems are easy but brace yourself for the theory..... good luck
This professor isn't the best, but makes the class easy to get an A in. Lecture isn't required just know how to do every question from his past exams and you'll get an A with flying colors.
