i had a problem with the weekly quizes, thank you very much...and the FINAL
No Comments
A lot of work. Did more work for his class then all others combined
extremely hard, so much friggen work
nice guy....but way too much work weekly...final is insane....dont take him
V. nice guy, but really hard and he thinks his class is your ONLY class.
Ridiculously hard, and he spits. Not nice, lives in his office.
Anyone who chooses to take his class is insane
Quizes and Tests are EXTREMELY difficult...is cold as ice and has NO mercy
No Comments
if the mountains of work don't kill you, his stuttering will
Good guy, insane amounts of work, final was nuts
Good in class teacher but tests/quizzes are HARD and reading load and hw loads are ABSOLUTELY INSANE theres no way a NORMAL college kid can keep up w/ the reading.
he's a nice guy, but i feel bad...he lives alone in an apt in bridgeport and stutters. really hard, lowest grade i have ever gotten at FU was his class
really nice, and i like his voice. he challenges and inspired me
I'd rather get open heart surgery than take him again
He's kinda goofy but I learned so much and he tries to make it interesting.

Good Guy. Class is tough, but interesting. Its not as bad as the other ratings. He makes you laugh and has very easy quizzes every friday.
very interesting class, not so easy though. Abbott rocks, he has the best stutter and erases the blackboard dilligentely
Avoid this man at all costs......especially if you see him bushing his teeth and shaving in Gonzaga
sux....don't take avoid this one
great guy. Erases the board with a passion, and makes you laugh. Easy quizzes every friday. a lot of reading though.
easy quizes but still you gotta read like a chapter a week and answer a lot of questions per chapter. he gives good lectures and loves history. he knows what he's talking about.
Fool don't be jiven my main man Abbott just cause you ain't a history major.
I hated this teacher. It was a chore to go to class. There are much better teachers out there for HI 30
Fire Marshall Bill. He looks like him and acts like him too. You're probably looking for a nice easy HI30 and you won't find it here. He's hell bent on correcting what he considers to be rampant Univeristy-wide grade inflation...by giving you a C.
his lifelong goal is to be on the history channel. very demanding, strict on proper grammer in papers, no more quizes though. do not take
Great prof!
Great teacher!
Dr. Abbott really likes history, so he gets really into teaching it. It's a bit of work, but you actually learn in his class. I liked the class, but it isn't for everyone.
He's a really nice guy but he is a really tough grader. He's really rough on your grammar and it almost seems as though that counts more than the content. But overall, he does keep you interested
This class isn't an easy A, but an A is still possible. It's just a challenge. If you're looking to just get a good grade, pick another teacher. But if you're relatively intelligent and want to learn something, Abbott is a fantastic teacher. My fav.
He's a nice guy--he's just an ridiculously hard grader--my papers may not have been A's but they certainly weren't low C's. When i was proud of a paper--I definitely wasn't in agreement with the grade
if you're looking for an easy HI 30, keep looking. His life's mission is fighting grade inflation, so no freebies here, but A's are possible and I'm not a history major. Pretend you have good grammar for the tests or he'll nail you.total nerd, but good
I found him to be very approachable and helpful. I found his grading to be very fair. Im not a history major and he made it seem interesting. Bright and very knowledgable. Thank you for a great semester.
A lot of work, but not too bad overall.
Hard grader, knows what he's talking about. Makes students basically answer own questions from workbook when he is asked a question about it. Lot of work!
terrible teacher, too tough of a grader and expects too much from students. says that 5-7 hours of work are needed PER NIGHT to get an A, and i dont know about anyone else, but if i did that, i wont have no social life, no fun, and all my other grades would suffer. DO NOT TAKE HIM
very sweet guy, he means well, but expects wayyy too much. Unless you have 5 hours a night to spend doing history work, I would advise you to keep looking.
Unless you feel like you should be attending Oxford DO NOT take this guy.
Good teacher, but hes a ton of work and a very hard grader if you want an easy class def dont take him!!!
He is a very intelligent man who demands alot from his students. A tremendous amount of work for HI 30, but is very helpful..go to his office hours if you are concerned about your grades
DROP THIS CLASS NOW, RUN FAST AND FAR AWAY! assigns and INCONCEIVABLE amount of work, doens't know how to explain anything, and it is impossible to stay awake in his class (and he hates you if you say one word) thinks that everyones lives should revolve around HIS class, papers are graded ridiculous
This class is so much work.A quiz every Friday on ridiculous amounts of material. Grades papers extremely hard.Is very unclear when answering questions. Is very knoledgable of this subject. Way too much work. Hard to stay awake. Final is extremely hard. Have fun if you dont drop it! haha
great teacher, has to teach a lot of material and tries his best- is very willing to talk to you after class in his office- gets really into what hes doing
You will learn a lot. There is a great deal of work. I found it helpful to pair up with another student to complete study guides for the weekly quiz. Demands strong writing skills.
I graduated in 2004 before this stuff was online, but this guy was one of my least favorite teachers I had at FU. I didn't like his approach to the class, with basically just a ton of memorization and he seemed to become irriated quite easily.
Brilliant and dedicated to students
So enthusiastic about what he's teaching and more than willing to work with you and answer every and all questions you have. A lot of reading and workbook questions, so don't do it if you have another heavy-load class.
One of the best prof. at Fairfield. if you dont like history, you will at least appreciate it, after taking Abbott. Makes history very interesting, tho it is a lot of work. Quizzes all fridays, but they help for the final. hard grader on papers, specially on GRAMMAR, but you will probably learn more history than what you've ever done in your life.
The weekly quizzes he gives are so much more important in your grade than he gives any implication to... the papers are also very very important, and his final was absolutely ridiculous. I looked at my friends HI30 finals and I would have gotten an A in any of their classes but I got a C+ in Abbotts class. So much material it was impossible.
This guy knows his stuff, he may be a tough grader but he prepares you for the upper level courses. You may not get the easy A you want from the other joke Hi30 sessions, but if your a history major you will want to take his session
If you like history, or care about your GPA dont take this guy. If you can handle his stuttering and mumbling then its the rediculous work load that will kill you. This guy made my sophomore year hell.

NEVER TAKE ABBOTT :'(
definatly a difficult class, but a real nice guy. go to his office hours, he will help a brother out. other raters are being reallllly dramatic.
awful...do NOT take this class for ANYTHING ever. completely ridiculous grader.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
it's alot of reading, quiz-taking, and not so much note-taking. he's a very informed and intelligent professor that tries to engrave in our heads the importance of being informed. to do so means to read! he does what he can to give an in-depth view of the world. this means looking at events from every different aspect of life.
Abbott's class is a touch nut to crack, but once you do, you will KNOW your history! Believe me, I'm in a 200 level history class now, and it's a cake walk after taking it with Abbott.
Great guy. He loves what he does. He does however think that everyone else loves what he teaches as much as he does. The work load is excessive and requires a significant amount of time and effort. However he is a very fair test/quiz grader, BUT very hard paper grader. You do need to try hard but don't judge a book by it's cover. Great teacher.
this guy is a character. he knows the material very well and is very helpful. the class is not that hard if you enjoy history
hardest class i have ever taken... insane amount of work that you have to know such finite details... its rediculous... taking it as a non irish history major i feel like i made one of the worst mistakes of my life
He's smart, engaging, and one of the most passionate professors I have ever taken. He will not only teach you about the subject, but will improve your writing skills much more than any English professor. Do your work, participate, and ask questions, and you'll be fine. Great guy
do not take this class! worst decision i have ever made.. he went to oxford and makes you feel like you're there right with him. he will ruin your life.. if you have a soul stay clear.. if you want to graduate with a decent GPA, you wont take this class. horrible is an understatement.
RRUUUUUUNNN
HARDEST class I have taken here. There is soo much material it is ridiculous. He is a nice guy, but this class was murder for mee. He grades really hard on the essays (best 2 out of 4, so you really only have to do 2). The midterm and final are SO hard...you will study your life away for them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Bill Abbott is the man, and not nearly as hard as these people make him out to be.
Pretty tough class, but very helpful teacher. He'll spend as much time with you as you need to help you get the grade you want. Nicest guy. Really great prof.
If you like to read chapters at a time from a textbook, and answer about 50 qustions per chapter about that material, have accumulative midterms and finals, and like a hard grading teacher--take him. After about a month he stops taking attendance. Real nice guy, absolute genius. Lots of reading and questions.
I took him for tudor/stuart history and he was great. He really knew his stuff and exhibited a lot of passion for the topic that kept the class interesting. I'm a history major.
please notice the only good comments this horrible professor is getting are from the history majors.. for hi 30, im warning you not to take him.. easily one of the worst professors here at fairfield and ive had some pretty bad ones
This guy will read your essays, comment on them, and then give you a D- on them anyways. He is ridiculously hard professor compared to the other history professors in this school and has no mercy for little mistakes. He failed me for HI 30 and i retook the course at a community college to transfer credit and got a B there. My advice: avoid Abbo
He is a really nice guy. It is obvious that he really cares about his students and has a real passion for history. It makes you happy to see him get so excited over it. If you do the workbook and read the text you'll do fine. The only thing is that he does grade pretty hard on essays but you have a few chances to make up for it.
Really hard class but he allows you opportunities to rasie your grades (quizzes every Friday - drops the lowest two) and if you write all 6 of required 4 papers, he'll take the highest 4 grades. Knows a lot about subject but does not teach it well. Office hours don't help THAT much but maybe you can get pity points?
Everyone said Abbott was impossible and not worth taking. False. Although he is a difficult grader on papers, the weekly quizzes are an easy way to raise your grade. If you fill out the workbook (mine was about 75% done) and are a half decent writer I'm sure you can get a good grade. Seeing him for help also not a bad idea. Very passionate teacher.
very hard
He is such a sweetie. Honestly HI30 is hard no matter what prof you get. He tries really hard to get everyone into it. Just do the workbook questions and answer questions and he will love you. Also ask him specific questions and go to his office hours. The exams were tough but not impossible. Hard grader on papers!
HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY LIFE. There are essays due every week, and he grades them harder than any english professor I have had. He is enthusiastic and the classes isn't boring, but MAJOR blow to my GPA for a core class. This class was just so damn hard. Cried after the final. Nightmare just nightmare. Good luck if you take him.
He always preached know the order. Know it chronologically, yet he continually spoke out of chronological order. His stutter also made it impossible to follow. The one good thing was he was good at free handed maps on the board. There was a weekly quiz and a TON of homework questions each week. DON'T TAKE HIM.
Abbott is not as scary as everyone makes him out to be actually I initially HATED history and I learned more in this class than any other one. Given there is a ton of work but in the end you will come out much more well-rounded in history than anything else. If you put the time and effort into the course you will receive at least a B-.
History is a lot of work, no matter who your professor is. Dr. Abbott knows this, and gives you everything you need to succeed. He gets a bad rap because people don't want to work for a good grade. If you do the workbook, you'll be fine. He's helpful and wants to answer your questions! He is not out to get students, though he is a tough grader.
My favorite teacher this semester. His class is a lot of work but I love history, so I love his class.
Based on things I had heard about him, I was scared to take his class and was even considering dropping it, but after the first class, I decided to stick with it and I absolutely love him. He truly cares about his students and loves teaching, and you can tell. There is a lot of work, but its not unmanagable. Definitely my favorite teacher so far.
Professor Abbot is a great teacher. He made history that most of the time is boring interesting. It's true that you have to do three take home essays and you have a quiz every week. However, he gives you all the tools u need to succeed. Great guy who cares about his students. Definitely would take him again!
Hard as hell...but maybe the best professor I've ever had. Absolutely brilliant guy. Really interesting. I won't lie. It's insanely hard. I got an A but I busted my butt. Stay away if you want an A and a social life.
I thought it was a walk in the park compared to AP Euro. Abbott is a sweetheart!
don't let the bad comments scare you. professor abbott is the best professor at fairfield!
His Class is very hard and alot of work, but he is a great teacher and really wants to help his students
Very helpful! Really wanted his students to succeed, but a lot of work for a core course!
Professor Abbot is an extremely passionate teacher. He is very knowledgeable and physically excited about his subject. I had him for the Honors class so we had A LOT of work, but it was an enjoyable class anyway.
I had him for the Honors class. It was a lot of reading and writing, often times unreasonably so. But he was very passionate about his subject, and very enjoyable as a professor. If you are into history I strongly recommend him, otherwise he is probably a bit too demanding.
He's very tough; the class is a lot of work, but if you do it, you should be fine. Definitely fill out the workbook and form a study group if you can (especially for midterm and final). It's a very hard class, and requires a LOT of studying. Excellent prof if you're a history major; he knows everything. Much less fun/enjoyable if you aren't.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Believes in "grade inflation" and is very difficult. Do not take any of his courses. As a result, I absolutely hate history.
two tests, midterm is 10 geography map, 10 ranking for history events(the one you never heard in class), 10 matching for terms' definitions. 5 or 7 short answers, one essay. Final is double the size of midterm. He give quizzes twice a week, sometime three. You have to read 900 page book, fill out a 300 page work book with like 15 question each page
Besides midterm and final, there are 6 essays required. I'm not a history major, y even bother for me to learn so much. I though if I tried harder I might get a better grade, but I was wrong. Drop it when you can, first week or as soon as possible. Do not be like me, did not drop it because I wanna try the midterm and it was too late to drop after
I took so many APs in high school and this was the hardest class i've ever in my entire life taken. I had no idea a history class could be this hard. He is a great professor though and cares a lot about his students. Really interesting. Go to his office hours. He will always help a lot. If you are looking for an easy A, forget about it.
literally the hardest class i have ever taken at fairfield U and i am a double major in finance and accounting
Definitely knows his stuff but teaches it in the most boring and least-efficient way possible. I have never worked harder in a class and I got my first C+ ever. Going to class is literally pointless, he doesn't even teach you anything important for the quizzes. This class could easily be an independent study class. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Took 3 of his classes. Fair grader, not a lot of quizzes or tests, interesting lectures.
gives a quiz every week(22% of final grade) Somewhat difficult essay grader, grammar is extremely important to him. 4 Essays(31%), a midterm(11%) and a final(26%) and 10% class participation would not take him again. I would suggest him if you liked history and are a good writer. smart man, interesting lectures, lot of reading
Cool professor, easy to talk to. really fair, gives you a rubric attached to the syllabus. for our class we had an essay and quiz every two or three weeks; the essays are easy, the answers are straight from the book, the quizzes are harder and you should study from them. know: maps, terms, big ideas. I got As on the essays and Cs on the quiz.
Great man, tough teacher. Stay on his good side because it is nearly impossible not to be. His knowledge of history is unmatched by anyone i've ever met.
This course was easily one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I spent hours reading the textbook and days in advance studying for the midterm and final (which weren't too hard). He also grades the essays extremely hard. Overall, in order to do well in this class you HAVE to read the textbook, answer the homework questions and participate.
Hard class, but if you put the work in - you will excel. He really cares about each student and is definitely willing to help. This course is textbook heavy and he gives a quiz every Friday on the reading. A wkbk is required, which has numerous questions - and those questions are going to be the SAME ones on the quizzes, midterm, and final.
Took him for HI216, class blows. The guy knows a lot but his lectures are all over the place. You have to read a ton and get either an essay or quiz every week. Good guy and will help you if you ask for it but you could learn as much by never showing up to class and just reading. Definitely don't take him.
Very happy for company and willing to work with you outside of class. He gives you a 300pg workbook in the beginning of class where you have to read the textbook to get the answers. All the quizzes/tests are based off the workbook. Enjoys maps/geography. Little area for negotiation.
Professor Abbott is such a nice guy and is an expert in his field. He has his doctorate from Oxford and Undergrad from Berkley. This course is reading intensive and you have a quiz each friday along with 4 essays throughout the semester. He is always available for help and loves when people come for office hours. A really kind man, but hard class.
Abbott is definitely a nice enough guy with a passion for history, but this class was an incredible amount of work. Extensive homework every week that took a ton of time to complete. He's also a meticulous grader when it comes to essays and quizzes. Overall, he's nice and very willing to help but this class was wayyy more work than I expected.
Professor Abbott is one of the nicest professors at Fairfield, you can tell he's super invested in his job too which means a lot. He is so smart and so funny, and gives you all quiz questions before you take it. Plus makes really thorough study guides for midterm and final. He is always available for extra help and knows history like no other.
Professor Abbott is a person who is willing to do anything to make sure that you understand the content of his class. The class does have a lot of homework, but if its extremely doable and if you do it then you will pass. Be sure to participate in class, and you'll get an A. Don't be a brat and just do the work.
We had Bill for Honors - he gets frazzled easily but he's a nice guy
Abbott is a really nice and funny guy who knows a lot about history. However, he gives a ton of work that if you don't get a head start on will hit you like a ton of bricks. Oh yeah, grammar and spelling count on all essays. Good guy, knows his stuff, but really makes you work.
Abbott isnt a mean professor. He is super nice. He tries to fit 1,000 years of history in one 50 minute class block. He gives a workbook that will have all the best quiz and test answers so its up to you to get it done, but its soooooo much! He is way too smart and expects everyone to keep up. He is a very difficult grader.
This class is a negative. Run.
Guy is a branaic and means well. However dont take this class. Homework is awful, weekly quizzes, essays are graded hard no matter what and the exams are brutal. Again, nice guy but hardest class Ive ever taken.
He is a nice man and cares. If you put in the work and visit him during office hours, he will definitely help you! He grades grammar pretty tough, but go to the writing center and get it checked. If you find a partner in your class and split the workbook each week, it will be fine. The class is difficult, but if you put in effort, it's manageable.
Dr. Abbott is very sweet and is a very knowledgable man. As this is an introductory course, he expects the entire class to know everything there is to know about history. I put in the work in the workbook, so I ended up doing fine in the class. If you re expecting to get an easy A, do not take this class. He's Very accessible but too hardcore.
He said he took attendance but he only did so in first few classes. He is sweet, knowledgeable, and respected. He is so enthusiastic in class and you will find him really interesting if you want to study. Please take him he's the most likable professor I know. You should study for the quiz and exam but everything is quite clear!
very hard teacher. He tries to fit to much history into the class and its a lot. He cares but expects way to much from you. He is a super super tough grader when it comes to grammer
hardest class ive ever taken in my life. worked my butt off to get an A-. incredible amounts of homework and papers. hes a tough grader too. incredibly nice guy and is an absolute brainiac about history and teaches well, but the workload is overwhelming
Professor Abbott is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history. He gives you a workbook which has questions for each chapter and gives a weekly quiz on the questions in the workbook from that chapter. There are 6 essays throughout the semester but he gives you a good amount of time to work on them. He is very approachable.
Professor Abbott is a great person but not the best professor. Lectures are all over the place and not clear, a ton of homework and reading, assigned 5 papers where he expects so much from you in a nearly impossible word limit (600, 800, and 1200), and tough grader (especially with grammar). You really need to work hard for a good grade here.
I had prof Abbott for honors and he was great! He was a little bit of a harsh grader, but I would take him again. He's so knowledgeable and provides great background information regarding what we discuss since he knows most of us aren't history students. Participation is important, and he welcomes everyone's ideas. Very caring and enthusiastic!
Professor Abbott is a nice man but avoid this class at all costs. So much reading and quizzes every week, harsh grader. Would not recommend. If you do have to take him, split up the weekly workbooks with a partner.
Intelligent guy, but just an insanely tough class. I thought this would be fun learning about Irish History, but this is not what I expected. His tough grading, high amount of readings and essays made me lose confidence in History. STAY AWAY!!!!
Hes really nice and a good person but he expects to much of his students. You have do 50 questions a week for homework and there are quizzes every week. There are so many essays you have to write and he's a really harsh grader. He doesnt realize students have other classes to study for. Do NOT take this class
Professor Abbott is incredibly knowledgeable and truly a nice man. This class is hard and he's a tough grader but if you work hard and go see him you will succeed. Just get on his good side and show him you're trying! Gives all quiz question before so don't bother reading, just memorize those. Papers are short, but he's crazy about grammar.
Just avoid this professor. He is such a nice man but not a good professor whatsoever. Constant readings, weekly quizzes, and a few essays including a closed book final. Thought I was barely going to make it to the end of the semester. If you have him, good luck.
A nice guy overall and very smart but not great at teaching. Expects you to know more than you should for a 1000 level history course. Such a tough grader when it comes to papers so make sure you proof read because grammar is a big part. Expected you to know everything for the final and it was tough. Would not take again too stressful.
Classic case of a smart guy that demands way too much of his students I worked harder in that class than all my other classes combined and only got a B. He is an impossible grader and have over 80 pages of reading per week. Do not take him if you don't have to
I put countless hours of work into this course and still saw no reward. I remember reading the reviews at the beginning of the semester thinking that he could not be that hard and I could get thru it. DO NOT THINK UR DIFFERENT LIKE I DID AVOID THIS COURSE. KILLS UR GPA AND IS SO STUPID HARD. do yourself the favor and take some other course.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Wrote a paper and he gave me a 3 out of 20 for grammar. If your not a history major, do not take this class and tank your GPA.
Prof Abbott is very knowledgable however he assigns 100+ pages of dense material reading per week and 25 questions based off of the reading. The quizzes are all based off of the questions but you have to read meticulously to find the answers to the questions in the material. Very much cares about grammar in papers,
Class is all over the place, but he is nice. He is a harsh grader on papers, the tests themselves are set up to make you fail (40% geography, which we do not learn in class). For a 1000 level history course this class is impossible, I'm a STEM major and put more work into this class than my major classes. Go to office hours for participation points
Don't take Professor Abbott's class if you're looking for an easy A. It takes lots of work, but it is one of the most rewarding classes I've ever taken. He cares about his students and has funny lectures; he's an all-around good guy.
I took Professor Abbott's War in Western History class and although it was extremely reading-heavy, he made it worth the time; his lectures are entertaining and cover a ton of material. Be prepared to do the readings he assigns because his quizzes are all based on that. It is manageable but time-consuming. I loved him and would take him again.
Hardest yet most rewarding class I've ever taken! Tests are all questions from reading (LOTS of Reading) and geography of the world from reading. Papers have strict word limits, and he's a TOUGH grader. However, he wants nothing more than for his students to succeed. He's caring, hilarious, and lectures are awesome. Put in effort and you'll be fine
Dr. Abbott is a tough grader, but his class was very rewarding and a very enjoyable experience. He has very fun lectures and is accessible outside of class. His quizzes are pulled directly from his review material and are straight forward. As long as you prepare for them you will do great. My favorite professor this year and I would take again.
All the five star reviews on here are prof abbott writing them about himself. Do not take this professor.
Professor Abbott is by far one of the best people on campus - he is so caring and funny, but his class is a nightmare. It's 90 pages of assigned reading a week, but if you look through the quiz questions in advance and take good notes in class you'll be fine just by skimming through the books. You definitely need good time management.
My favorite professor! He made the material very interesting and is clearly very passionate about what he teaches. Many essays and a large amount of reading, but if you keep up with it, you will find that this course is very rewarding. Accommodating when needed, which was extremely helpful to me. I would definitely take one of his courses again.
The class will be rewarding.
Don't take if you want an easy A. He was definitely nice, but SO much reading and the midterm and final are so difficult. He does curve them though which is good or else the whole class would fail. 4 mini papers, a midterm, a final. get. ready. to. read. if you do not read the 100 pages a week you will fail the class.
Professor Abbot is a very nice person and is very passionate about the subject. However, I found the work load excessive. It was extremely hard to enjoy the class when I was constantly stressed about getting the work done every week.
This class is awful don't take it
Horrible class. Its lecture only and the lectures don't help. He grades essays like we are Phd historians. He expects you to read and understand close to 40 pages a week of texts that are barely in English. Quiz every Friday. The final is cumulative and contains over 300 pages of reading. If you have to take this class, good luck, you'll need it.
Professor Abbott is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever had. He cares deeply about the subject matter and provides great feedback on papers. The course load is difficult, with a quiz every Friday, but if you do the readings and questions he provides in advance you'll be fine. Be prepared to dedicate about five+ hours a week to this class.
Nice guy but one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. 30+ pages of reading per week that come with 30+ questions from his workbook that he wrote. Quiz every Friday that he picks 3 questions from the week and you pick one to answer. Very hard grader on essays and the final is awful. Get ready to memorize an insane amt of material maps and dates
DO NOT take this class. This was probably the most work I have ever had to do for a class. Nice guy but the amount of work given is ridiculous. Save your GPA and take a different course. If you have to take this professor, drop it as soon as you can.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR CLASS AT ALL COSTS. Although he is a nice guy who wants his students to learn, his expectations for an introductory-level history class are absurd. The workload is excessive and is not worth it at all if you are not a history major. If you need the credit for this course, I highly recommend you choose a different professor.
Although he is very nice, he expects way to much of an intro level course. His grading doesn't really make sense and is super harsh, especially with essays. Don't take this class if you want no stress or an easy A.
Professor Abbott is a nice guy but his class is extremely difficult for an introductory course. There are a ton of weekly reading/questions and quizzes every week on that reading. He is also a very tough grader on the 4 papers that you have. It is possible to do well but not without extensive preparation and time spent on the material.
So many lectures and so much homework. He wrote on the syllabus that there should be 2 and 1/2 hours of homework per 50 minute class. Unfair grader, tests off of his drawings of maps. He think his class is the only class to exist.
As a history major, this is still by far one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken for very simple reasons. The papers are fine. He wants what he wants and if you give that to him you will do well. Term memorization exams in 2024 are crazy... taken every other 3000-level and none have had that. Not necessary for history anymore.
Professor Abbott's class is a serious commitment, but if you engage with the material, you can learn a lot. Stay on top of the readings and use unstuckstudy for extra study prep - it really helps.
DO NOT TAKE. HARDEST CLASS EVER. TOUGHEST GRADER AND SO MUCH STUDYING.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. HE IS THE HARDEST GRADER EVER,ESPECIALLY ON PAPERS YOU WILL WORK SO HARD AND IT WONT PAY OFF. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Don't take this guy. Bro won't even let you use grammarly
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. He lectures the whole time, and you can barely understand him. He is a VERY tough grader, no matter how hard you worked on the assignment. He HATES using technology, never replies to emails, and doesn't use his blackboard.
He was the worst teacher I have had in my 4 years at Fairfield. I took a simple 2000-level history and he expected us to be full-time historians knowing everything about the world. All the grades are made up from the texts and quizzes as the HW is to just do an obscene amount of readings to "prepare" for the class.
Super nice guy, he definitely loves his job, but just doesn't do enough. There is so much reading, it is extremely hard to keep up with, and you can't get away with not doing the readings, you will fail. He is a very tough grader on all written assignments takes 5 points off per error. Do not recommend at all, never again taking a class with him.
Professor Abbot shows that he is very passionate about history since the 15th century, but his teaching methods are very outdated. As a mechanical engineering major, I did not need this added stress on my schedule. Nice guy, bad class.
Professor Abbott is very passionate about history. However, he grades extremely hard, especially for a 1000 level course. The actual course readings aren't that bad, it is only about a chapter each week. He grades his papers so hard and provides no feedback. You will work very hard on his papers only to earn a 70.
I think Dr. Abbott is so nice and understanding with his students. He keeps lectures engaging, and while the work can get heavy(weekly essays, readings, etc.), he doesn't have hard deadlines and he grades very fairly.
Professor Abbott is an extremely tough grader, leaving you no feedback on what you got right or wrong. He looks for absolute perfection in everything and thats simply not possible with the amount of work he assigns. The readings per week become extremely overwhelming when you add them into the workload of all your other classes.
Very kind professor and very funny, however hardest grader EVER. Quizzes every week in class that are all writing, literally nothing can prepare you for them. 500 pages of reading a week. Four papers throughout the semester. You have to put in a lot of work to get the results you want and sometimes thats even too challenging.
