His tests are not well written/He is a jerk/Easy to get a B in his class
Very firm but fair, his tests come from lecture, an easy class but good.
easy multiple choice tests, straight from lecture.
Good teacher, just turn off your phone or pager!!!
Exams are based almost totally on lectures. Have to go to class, especially on Fri!! Exams are a little bit confusing. Likes to talk about current issues but not much debate occurs.
I loved him. His class was easy and interesting and best of all, I got an A :D

GOOD LECTURER, MID EASY TESTS
His lectures were not boring and were easily understood, his tests came straight from the notes. One warning to others, Make sure your cell phone is off because if it rings you get thrown out
ok teacher, very anal, tests are pretty much from the notes. gotta to go to class if you wanna pass. Tests are Multiple choice.
His tests are NOT straight from lecture nor book. The choices on the test all sound alike and is quite confusing. Average test grades in class were C's and D's. His lectures are interesting, however, on 60% of it is relevant to the test.
Very arrogant. Will walk out of class. Talks about current events rather than stick to the lesson plan. Tests obviously have nothing to do with current events. Students en up feeling lost and frustrated!!
U LUCKY IF U GET ANY KIND OF B OUT OF THE CLASS...TAKE SOMEONE ELSE FOR YOUR SAKE.

He is a good teacher. Only have 4 grades and they are all tests. The test comes from the notes. But he is a good lecturer.
unorganized, confusing tests
Test questions are mostly from lectures in class; receptive to questions; easy to listen to/learn from.
This class is very easy, your final grade comes from four easy easy tests. Just go to class and listent ot the lectures and you'll easily ace the tests. He is also funny and not boring like most lecturers
BORING!!! Would go on tangents about current events leading many people very confused on what to take notes on. Most people either fell asleep or left.
Very easy class, if you go to the lectures. Most of the test questions are straight from his lectures. Book doesn't play a big part in the tests but it is good to skim it. Just keep your cell phones off!
at first you give him the benefit of the doubt, then you start to fall asleep, the you just stop going. he lied...tests come from the little details that you overlooked or thought insignificant in the book.
Don't take this teacher, he might not give much work out of class, but his tests are so ocnfusing, dont expect to make higher then a C on his tests.
he is easy if you go to lectures and know the definitions in the book. no final. good lecturer.
he chills, gets boring at times but uses old repetitive jokes to keep you interested, the test are very confusing and come from little details you cant study and probably didnt write down
just when you think you've studied...for some reason not a lot of ppl get more than a C on his tests...guess they're confusing or something. the material comes from his lectures.
A lot of times his lectures are boring. Makes it harder on you cause all his tests come from lecture. The book doesn't do you any good. He even told us that if an answer in the book is contrasting to his then use his. Just listen well to lecture.
Easy Class, you have to goto the lectures. listen and you will do fine. Book Can be helpful. Keep phone off in class
I took him for both 1336 and 1337. He is the easiest and best professor to take for this course in my opinion. His tests coem str8 from the lectures adn you don't even have to go to every class to pass them. Study vocab from relevant chapters.
Probably the worst prof I have ever taken. Test questions picks out the most microscopic information in the book, he tells you to study the major stuff then turns around and take something that's only cover in 1 sentence of a section.
retarded prof. most idiotic prof. on campus!!
Whatever this guy talks about in class wont be on the test. He tests you over random facts that you probably skipped over in the readings. He tells stupid jokes, dont bother laughing, you still wont make the grade.
took him years ago. surprise he is still teaching. horrible instructor. cannot teach. acts snobby.
this class was insane. i cant explain how tedious and hard this class is.
Barnes is a good teacher...he forces you to push yourself, and really try to learn. He encourages discussion but does play favorites. If you help the discussion and don't do annoying things like talk in class or tap your pencil, etc etc, he'll be cool with you. He likes essay tests.
He's a decent teacher, but he tests you on the littlest details that he fleetingly mentions in class. On top of it he's very arrogant and he likes to make fun of students in front of the whole class for no reason.
not a good prof.
this dude is alright. At times he thinks he is the man but just tell him to shut the **** up. I got a D but if you focus and do what he tells you there shouldnt be a problemo
this guy like to tell life stories about himself that have nothing to do with gov't. he's ok at times but i think his test suck.
This teacher sucks!!!!! his tests are hard, hes boring and he thinks hes the****!!
this guy is terrible. worst prof i ever had im my life. his jokes are so gay. his test are so hard, i went to class everyday and took good notes and im getting a D in the class. horrible teacher, avoid at all cost.
ALRIGHT TEACHER. tests are difficult, questions mainly come from lectures. he asks about the smallest details. no handouts, homework, extra credit, etc. your grade is scrictly on the 4 exams in his class. NO CURVES. he is very rude. he will point you out and embarass you infront of the 500 ppl class
DONT TAKE HIM!!!! hes a very hard teacher, his test are extremly diffcult. he just talks and talks. Dont but the book, its $90.00 and it dont help at all, just get some copies or something. the only thing you need from the book is the def.
Good Prof, better for 3319 than for 3314. Speak up in class, read and don't be afraid to state your opinion. Upper Level test is all essay, but it is based on a little reading, listening, and mostly taking a position on the issue.
his exams are straight from lecture and some definitions from the book. As long as you go to class, do not sleep, and take very good notes you will do well. I missed two class once and it really hurt me on my exam so going to class is very important!!! because he does not have any extra credit.
This guy is a horrible professor. He seems to have an extensive amount of knowledge about his subject, but he doesn't seem to enjoy teaching at all. He freaks out if people whisper or their cell phones ring and he makes it a point to publicly humiliate them. Not reccomended.
He's a funny guy. He knows what he's teaching. Make sure not to miss class though cuz his lectures are essential for the tests. Its a lot of material though, so that could be a challenge. Book is mainly for def. After test, he'll curve so thats a +. I thought he was gr8.
Yes, he's strict but why should mouths & cells go off in class? He's a wonderful teacher & if you attend class, pay attention, scan thru bk (buying bk isn't necess.,you can still pass if you use common sense with defs), you will do well.
Very good teacher, his exams are tough so make sure you go to class because the lectures are essential. The book helps only for definitions. He curves after the tests because some of his questions are very picky. Dont be afraid to speak up if theres a problem. Go to class and turn off your cell fone
Very good teacher who also adds bits of humor to keep classes interesting. Clearly states the facts and does not beat around the bush. Demands classroom respect, with which all teachers clearly deserve. Tests are pretty hard but attend lectures and hope for a grading curve and you should be fine.
he is a great professor, i really don't understand why some students complain about how he doesn't like for cell phones to go off in class, clearly its respectful towards him and other students to do so. anyways you need to take this class seriously & you'll be fine just dont let yourself fall behind
He's a ok professor. Yeah, old people are mean. Just don't get in his pet peeve about cell-phone. His tests are tricky, but if you listen and take good notes. I didn't thinkg you will have problem. I make like 71 on the first test, and 100 on the next by attending more than 1 sections.
he assumes you understand everything in the world and how it applies to polsci. who knew school board is a govt!?? i got a D in 1336, worked for a B in 1337. it helps to record lecture and rewrite notes.
Respect him and he'll respect you. Go to class and scan your notes and you'll do fine.
Can be kinda snooty, I probably wouldn't like him personally because of that, but he's a great professor. Very clear, and he's funny, too! Very stern, and he doesn't even laugh at his own jokes (eventhough they're pretty good most of the time).
sarcastic, but fair. his test seems ok but are more tricky. no final :)
HES A CAKE
GREAT professor. The book is merely a supplement. Often times you get crap professors where you learn more from the book than the class. I paid close attention to his lectures, didn't read the book, and did great on the test. He's just picky about punctuality, cell phones, etc.
He exams were mainly from lectures, so attend class and you should be fine.
smart, experienced, boring, just turn off your cell phones, and if they ring you must leave, b/c he will stop class and hunt you down. if you answer he will literally chase you out and if he finds out who you are then he will drop you. kind of scary in a way
I reaaly enjoy Professor Barnes class, he's only hard on a person when you come to class late. Overall I am happy to be a part of his class.
His class kept me awake even though it was during the evening so I think his class was great...I recomend him a lot!
Barnes is a great professor. His lectures are informative and interesting, and he has more than a few helpful hints about pet care. The exams are easy. Grades on the curve, for all of you slackers.
Great Lecturer. PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONES IN CLASS. HE IS THE CELL PHONE NAZI!!! Easy tests, just go to the lectures, most of what he says in not in the book. only 2 or 3 questions come from the book! He is a real stickler, but this was an easy A for me.
One day a phone went rang during his lecture. He asked whos phone it was and no one replied. As he was packing up his stuff to leave he told us that the material not covered on that day was going to be on the test. This guy is serious. I think he was a lawyer.
i like the way he teaches. if u really take good notes-u're ok
Great teacher, had him both semesters. did great on his tests. just go to class, turn off your phone, and be on time.
He is so freakin rude. the only thing good about this class r the lectures he calls people stupid and the tests q's are crap. if the prez gets impeached does vice take over? only if prez is removed remember that if u take this class.
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE! He hates cell phones ringing. The tests aren't too hard if you take good notes and study.
Mr.Barnes is an ex private investigator, thus he is very strict and tough.he does curve but usually only drops 1 or 2 questions ONLY if you explain to him why it is a hard question.he makes lame jokes having nothing to do with course material. UNFORTUNATELY he is the best POLSCI teacher at UH.
If you're looking for a low maintainance class, this is it! Yes, he hates cell phones and talking when not called upon, but go to the lectures and you'll pass the 4 tests with no problem. Read the chapters to make an A. His lectures are clear and to the point.
4 exams (non comprehensive :)) No final! If you come to every class, take good notes, and read the chapters, you'll do good. I made an A- and an A, and you'll learn some stuff
He is the BEST teacher for political science, and he is also kinda funny (in a rude way):) Just go to class and take good notes and you should make at least a B. He doesn't like cell phones going off, or people talking, so just avoid that. You'll definitely learn a lot, he makes it interesting!
very clear and to the point, just show up for class and learn the vocabs in the book cus they will show up in the test. overall a good teacher. no final. :D
hard teacher
Professor Barnes is a genious!! The class was funny (in a sarcastic manner) and he is clear and to the point. The class is an easy A if you read the material that you are told to read. He drops the most missed questions on the test if someone in the class gives him a valid reason as to why the majority of the class missed the question. Easy!!!!!!
He is much more interesting than the other political science professors. He has a mean streak, so please do not make any noise while in class. Not an easy A unless you love politics. With effort it is very possible to get a B+ in this class. He does not curve the grades as much as other professors, so pay attention in class and read the book!
suck being stuck there and it was worse when he repeated stuff
this professor sux
A bit of a hard ass, but he's pretty clear and straight forward. Just make sure you don't disrupt the class by talking or your cell phone. He has little patience for that. I hardly went to class this summer and pulled a C+. No essays, all multiple choice tests.
Barnes expects way too much from his students considering this is a core level class. This class was atrociously boring.
this prof. sucks !!! PERIOD!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS DUDE!!! HE IS BORING, HE HATES PEOPLE, AND DOES NOT HELP ANYONE AT ALL!!! AVOID THIS **** AT ALL COST

great professor. He is smart and knows his stuff. If you go to class you'll do fine.
Good teacher, but boring as hell. Talks in a monotone voice...
funny in an "old guy" kinda way...straightforward (very)..clear though ..kind of a hard ass too
This guy is very rough around the edges. Poli Sci is a boring subject so don't expect too much out of him. Okay guy but I don't recommend taking him unless you like to go to class and take notes. If you do you'll be fine!
Lectures are pretty long and boring, however he does crack alot of funny jokes (to help pass time), test are pretty difficult and are more his interpretations of the subject rather than straight from the notes and text.
He's old man, but pretty calm & funny, and knowledgable. Very clear lectures. Consists of 3 exams which are multiple choice. Have online quizzes & pop quizzes (so come to class). Just take good notes & you'll do fine. Even though its a MWF class, we didn't have to go to class on Fridays. I passed with a B, but didn't study so hard.
Professor Barnes is makes class interesting and is easy to understand . The class is an easy A if you attend lectures and learn the vocabulary in the text. Although he is a very good professor, he is very strict; do not dare forget to turn off your phone or put it on silent, that's his biggest pet peeve. He'll kick you out of class if it goes off.
The class is relatively easy as long as you go to class and take notes. He is very easy to understand . He also throws out the ducks who have their phone on in class. Go Barnes!
Funny guy, keeps class interesting.Really knows his stuff, and his tests are easy. Also, if a large number of people in the class miss a question on the exam, he'll toss the question out
Worse Teacher I had this semester. Class is not difficult, but be prepared for complete boredum. He stands at the podium and stares down the entire time and you have to go to class because his tests are based on class lecture. 2 papers, 2 online quizzes and 2 exams. Not recomended for a morning class but if you must, drink plenty of cofee.
hes soooooo sexy...... his class is easy. Everyone should take him. if u fail his class, youre a dumbass because he tosses questions out on his test and gives you all of the info you need to pass his tests.
sarcastic but in a good way
William Barron is not actually boring once you really start to understand art. He's seems to be a great guy. If you need help he's willing and able to offer time to help you. The only thing I wish was that the class book was more into depth.
pain in the ass guy. no study guide, lots of reading, boring as all hell.
he was fairly interesting. i thought pols was going to be boring as crap but it wasn't so bad. hes pretty sarcastic which make people think hes an ass, but i thought he was funny and he really knew what he was talking about
Dr. Barnes is a great teacher. He has clear rules and you know what to expect. He totally changed my mind about Politics. Exams are about the lectures and you dont have to read the book- but the keyterms.
He totally changed my view on Politics. I thought this class would be boring and complicated but he explained everything clearly. He got me to understand out political system a little better and you can bet I'ma take PArt 2 with him. His exams aren't very difficult if you go to class and take notes.
man dont take this classs, he is an ****. make sure u dont ever take this class , its worthless
Not always one of the easiest classes, but he is a great teacher. He explains very well and he make you become interested in what he is teaching.
he doesn't give notes, there are no bonus points. he only lecture. which is not that helpful.
this is a GOOD teacher. her explains everything with sometimes funny examples and is very clear on the subjecs he lectures. if you study your notes well, you will make a good grade. go to class. take notes. pay attention at all times. TURN OFF YOUR CELL!
Attend his lectures and review sessions because he covers everything perfectly in class. He emphasizes the main points you should know about the artist. I enjoyed the class eventhough his lectures are a bit monotonous, they're filled with extremely useful information regarding the tests.
Very arrogant and unclear about grading the rules change as the class progresses. DOES NOT help students outside of class.
very easy, go to class, don't have your cell on he'll kick you out, he's moderate not left-/right-wing. MC tests i believe 3 and a final. don't take until you've learned to study. learned alot and would go out of my way to take him again
In class he's happy to answer questions no matter how many times they've been asked (provided that you don't ask them when he's in the middle of talking) and is fairly neutral when it comes to politics. Also, turn your phone off or leave it at home.
OMG DONT TAKE HIM! His tests are freaking tricky and he is one arrogant****who loves to talk about woman, he's a dirty ol ****ed man who has mood swings and will kick you out of his class if you talk during class. If you leave early he will call you out. No lecture notes what so ever, he doesnt even give you a review or anything, his tests SUCK
He is a bit strict, especially with cell phones and tardiness. His lectures are good because they are kind of repetitive making it easier to remember things when you study. He doesn't provide his notes or a review because he expects you to take care of all that in class. He is glad to answer questions. Test are MC and can be a little tricky.
His class was very entertaining. Very strict tho but at the same time it talks in a way that keeps you paying attention on what he is saying. I like him in general. Tricky tests tho, dont recommended for international students.
Class is interesting, at times a little boring. He is strict with tardiness and things of that nature. He is very clear. It's easy to make a B on his tests, but hard to make an A. If you go to every class and take notes and read the book it's still slightly hard to make an A. But overall it's not a bad class.
go to class, take notes, and dont fall asleep, and you will get a c. study and get a b. its not easy to make an a in this class. he will embarass you if your cell phone goes off in class and for other instances. overall...take this only if youre not just taking it for a core class
eh! this class is fun...he is funny (sometimes) he is a lil strict, his test are just so tricky u've gotta be really smart to get an A...B's are easy just take note, go to class and read the text till u understand...dont CRAM b4 the test
He's a strict, and intimidating. Make sure to turn off your cell phone or to not be noisy, or he'll kick you out of his class.
I do not recommend him. Not to trash this professor but he likes to power trip. This is probably all the unruly students that he's had in the past though. Just treat this class like you would any other. Go to it, try to stay awake, take notes, read your book and pray... if you don't pray, go sacrifice a goat. Good luck.
I learned tons his class and found it easy to get an A. Test emphasis is on lecture notes and less on the text but you will still need the book. He doesn't put up with any BS, so if you are one of those ppl who needs to talk or message in class a lot, take someone else's course.
I took 1337 and 1336 w/ him, hes great, entertaining professor with great humor amidst some sarcasm, but good overall. If youre late dont walk to the front otherwise he will make sure that youre noticed. Doesnt use the textbook as much and exams are quite easy.
horrible
If you can stay quiet and take good notes, great teacher. If you like to talk and make noise, avoid at all cost.
Doesn't follow the book, just assigns chapters "related" to the lectures. Tests are based on lectures, note the way he phrases his lectures because that's how it is on the test. 3 tests make up your grade. Take good notes or bring a recorder.
Worst Teacher Ever! I don't know what everyone else is talking about. I am an A student I work hard and study A LOT.. I had to drop this class.. Don't take it if you don't have to
he's a great professor, and demands respect. there are no quizzes or homework. you take 3 tests, and no final. make sure you're quiet, and your cell phone is off. take good notes, tests are based completely on his lectures. i would def. recommend him.
very strict, but a very good lecturer. if you can sit in class quietly for an hour and a half, you will learn a lot.
This professor is GREAT! His lectures are intense but interesting. Hard to believe but true. It would be very what I mean VERY wise to buy a recorder...you will need it. You will take alot of notes. 3 Exams, no Final, the tests are easy and are covered in his lectures...GO TO CLASS very important!!!!!
For the love of everything that is holy, DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS THIS MAN TEACHES! If you do end up in his class, please do the rest of your classmates a favor and turn off your cell phone. If it rings in class, the WHOLE class loses points on the exams. Do not let this happen to you. Freshmen beware...he'll eat you alive. Take it from a senior.
He's a very good professor IF YOU GO TO CLASS. His exams are very easy IF YOU GO TO CLASS. The key thing here is go to class. If you're one of those people that like to skip alot I sugguest you find a friend that takes very good notes or don't sign up for his class. Lastly, please turn off your cell phone during exams. He'll gladly take off points.
test questions are word for word from his lectures--take copious notes, even on things that seem insignificant. He's entertaining and can be funny but his picture is in the dictionary next to ORNERY (Though I hate cell phones and people that talk in class so I'm all for getting rid of them)
This professor is very hard. You have to keep up with his lectures, attend class all the time and pay attention in order to do good in his class. The test are multiple choice-50 questions. But sometimes the questions are nothing about his lectures. Have to read textbook and take good notes on his lectures to do good. I don't recommand taking him.
If you're majoring in or if political science is your thing you'll be fine. If you don't have a clue about or not really interested in Polsci, don't take this professor. Tests are hard, a lot of study time required, recorder a must. prof is anal retentive and likes to punish class for it. Don't bother stressing over a core class. Take someone else!
he is a very effective instructor and you will understand the material, exam is also easy. material on exam from lecture mostly. very easy to get an A, it if you go to class EVERYDAY. I got an A. people saying he is bad are the stupid people who did not go to class and as a result failed and absolutely deserved to fail. but is VERY CONDESENDING
a very very mean professor...doesnt care about ur questions..nooot helpful at all and is very difficult..NOT RECOMMENDED
very mean professors, turn off your cellphones! his lectures are pretty clear, take them cause they are very useful for tests, i failed cause his tests were HARD. he had only three tests on like 6 chapters, which made it very had to study for. his class was kinda boring. I DONT RECOMMENED THIS TEACHER. unless you want a challenge.
Good teacher just leave cell phones off in class
Barnes is one of the best teachers I've had at UH. Dont get me wrong, his class is hard, but hes an amazing professor. He is very dynamic so his lectures will not bore you, and he relates much of what he says to current topics or topics with heavy impact. Helpful out of class. My fondest memory of Barnes was seeing him dance in front of class.
Great teacher, gets u interested in the subject. Because of him I actually considered in minoring in Political Science.
I took him for both Poly-sci credits because I like that he gives lecture-based test. 3 test, all 50 questions, all easy. Just take good notes, then read over them as many times the night before, and you'll be set. He is touchy about noise in the class and throws people out because of it, but if you keep quiet and to yourself, you'll be fine.
He's pretty strict but he presents the material in an effective way. Take good notes. Exams are all multiple choice so they can be tricky. After your first week of class you won't need to be intimidated anymore. Just keep your cell phone off.
he is a great lecturer, but make sure read and study notes for exams.... he is a stickler about cell phones in class and will ask you to leave if yours rings....he is NOT tolerate of any kind of talking, even if you are trying to catch what he said by asking your neighbor..he will TELL you to leave.
i hated his class. if you're looking to struggle in class, take his class. he's the most hard teacher ive ever had. his tests are pretty hard unless you read the long boring chapters in the book..
Mr. Barnes is the most awesome teacher that ever lived. It is easy to get a B, you will learn a lot, he cares about his job, he doesn't take crap from anybody and I got a perfect score for this class. I took him for 1336 too and got an A. THe people who don't like are just the lazy ones who won't show up.
Don't believe the positive remarks! This professor's ofc hrs are from 11:00 to 12 MW (only 2 hrs a wk). He discourages emails and he will put you on the spot if you ask him a question in class. He lowers your grade for ScanTron errors on tests, and he is very moody. He kicks students out of class, turn off your cell and don't say a word. Avoid!!!!!
Great professor, the people who dont like him are those who either dont turn up for class and therefore do badly on tests, or people who get thrown out of class for being disruptive... I wish more professors took control of their classes like he does, you can make an easy B by turning up to every class, read the textbook if you want an A
Sometimes he is funny. Dont turn on your cell phone or stay near the fire exit, dont talk to him on the test or you will lose points, he likes to make fun of students. But if you skim the book (LONG BOOK) and stay awake in his lectures, you'll be fine.
Hes a good teacher, has good interesting lectures, however i dont know how i managed to get a C. His test are really tricky, and there are only 3. to get an A on his tests you have to get very detailed oriented questions right, other wise you wont.
DUDE IS AN **** AND ANAL ABOUT ANYTHING EVEN THE SOUND OF CRUMBLING PAPER, IS KNOWN FOR KICKING PEOPLE OUT LOVES TO THREATEN TO CALL CAMPUS POLICE. TEST ARE DETAIL ORIENTED AND 50% OF HIS LECTURES ARE ON THE TEST. READ THE BOOK! ON 3 TEST U BOMB ONE TEST YOU DESTINED FOR A C OR FAILURE. THINKS HE IS **** ALSO.
Barnes is one of the most difficult teachers I've had. My friend told me he was but I still tryed. I ended up failing the class but don't get discouraged. Just read chapters throughly and take notes in class. I recommend to come to class every time. Don't be late. Overall he's a okay teacher but I would not recommend him unless you studyed hard!
Ok well he is pretty ANAL about stuff, but it's not like he is evil. If you read the book, you will get an A! I didn;t read the book for the first two tests and I failed one and got a C on the other one. I read for the last tests and got a freaking 97!!!! I wish I had just read over the book for the first two tests!!! GOSH!!! But i advise you not t
A lot of these ratings give him a bad review saying he is anal about things, but to me the only thing he ever seemed anal about was people talking in class (seems to be a lot of lower classmen in here) overall class is easy, just pay attention and follow the syllabus and you will be fine.
To do well...go to class
To do well...go to class. The tests are multiple choice which are helpful.
Actually took him twice for both requirements first I got a C next class A. Yes he is strict your phone conversation or text message is not important great lesson for when go to the real world and get a job. Come to and record class if possible, read the book a little but memorize the key terms and you will get an A. Does not force personal views i
he is great.. if you just take his notes the test are real simple mult. choice..text book reading helps bc some questions come from it, but not much. I'm taking him for the second part of pols also
Very good teacher. seems like an a$$ but he's not, justr anal about things. i didnt buy the book and i did great! he's a great one just anal about things.(word of advice if you com in class 30 mins late!!...dont go to the front of the classroom!)
People say he is anal, but he really isn't he just wants respect aka don't talk, walk in late or get on the phone. There are only 3 tests, no extra credit, no final. Go to class, take notes on his lecture & study all of the key points. Make sure you at least read the chapaters at least once or twice before the tests and you should do fine.
I did not care so much about political science, until Barnes inspired me with his great lectures. I like the fact that he explains everything throughly and keeps us engaged with anecdotes.
Easy, can skip class a few times. Strict but with reason. For an A read the text too. 3 exams only, very straightforward. Don't rustle, don't walk to front of class if late, turn cell off. Very wise; sees things objectively. Open to questions during class but doesn't like email or questions after or before class unless personal.
you have to really pay attention and must read assigned chapters
if you go to class everyday and take notes on his lecture and read the chapters in the textbook that you're supposed to read, you will make an A.
Just remember to follow the rules when in class, study, and you'll do fine. If you don't, life could get hard for you.
You HAVE to go to class, pay attention, take notes, read all chapters he assigns. He can be really rude, but most people have it coming to them. The class is hard no doubt. He's super knowledgable though.
He is very sarcastic but the class is not that bad. I recommend showing up to class to take notes & reading the chapters assign. No difference than other classes.
I got an A in the class, and I skipped several lectures and never read the book. His comments are amusing and his tests are easy.
Teaches his own point of view... Test questions are tricky and confusing... NO CURVE!! Dont stand too long or he will call you out.. Dont talk, no cell phones going off, obssesed with fire exits!! Three multiple choice tests with 50 q's and doesnt round your grade up!!
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. Although he is an excellent lecturer, his tests are IMPOSSIBLE. He is extremely rude, condescending, & inconsiderate of his students. He is known for his horrible temper, personality, and tests. My advice if you MUST take him: Never miss class and do ALL the textbook reading.
he is anal about things but all and all he is good. if you hav a question, ask it and he WILL ANSWER IT! 3 tests, if you listen to his lectures and then study you will get at LEAST a B. i thought he was bad but he is not, at all. im taking him next semester.
He may come off a bit strict and mean, but he's good. There are only three tests the entire semester with NO final exam. The tests are pretty easy as long as you attend the lectures. There's a textbook you can read that you just print out from a website, but you don't need to read as long as you take attend every lecture and take REALLY good notes.
Come to every class, read the highlighted sections in the textbook & stay for the reviews. There are only 3 exams, no final and the class ends the week before finals. If you come to class every day you will have no problem. Be careful with t/f questions, if class meets on Mon and Wed and the question is t/f does class meet on Mon, answer would be t
Love him, he is very strict, but it's good because the class is big but you dont have much distraction. Only 3 test, 90% based on lecture, so take good notes, and read thru book, focus on keywords. This is a class that you really learn good day to day information. I would take him again, no doubt! 100% better then Kent Tedin.
Super sarcastic remarks keep you interested and attentive. Tests are mostly lecture-based. Text not needed, but it is helpful.
horrible hard teacher! do not take! very boring! and tests are like wtf?! tricky as hell to pass.. got a c- got my credit but i need a c for my major so im extra pissed.. dont take him!
I took him both pols 1336 and 1337, he is good just real anal about things which is funny to me (cell phones ppl talking etc) go to his lectures and read the book you will get an A. I like the way he teaches ,w/ examples...even if you can give a crap bout gov he makes you understand things to where you like it
If you can't stand classes that are straight-lecture, then don't take his class. I missed a bunch of lectures due lack of interest and read the book instead and still managed a B in the class. Would've been an A if I hadn't gotten sick and bombed the last test. Also, there was no final.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. His tests are hard as HELL. I read EVERY chapter and went to class about 75% of the time and I never made higher than a C on a test. Three tests and that's it, no final, homework, extra credit, etc.
Barnes is a certified JERK sometimes. Don't even bring your cellphone in. Even if you "rustle papers" too much, he will publicly humiliate you in the lecture hall. His tests are hard and there are only 3, which make up the entire grade for the semester. Nothing else. No homework, no quizzes, etc. I really don't suggest taking his class.
His class is easy if you show up and takes notes. Its straight lecture, so let me repeat - you must show up or have someone get you the notes. He does not use power point. Other than that, he speaks pretty slowly, and has a lot of interesting stories. If you walk in late, talk excessively, or make noise he will embarrass you so be prepared.
Good thing about this class is that there are only 3 tests, 50 multiple choice. However those were the hardest multiple choice Qs I have ever taken. I didn't really study hard, I got B in the class, I think I just got lucky
Showed up to class everyday and took a lot of detailed notes. Studied like h*ll for his exams and barely ended up with a C. He's very strict and the questions on his exams are very challenging. Would not recommend taking his class.
He is the worst teacher i have ever had...very sacrcastic and thinks certain questions are dumb to ask. Very old and needs to retire. Very Dull and non interesting. Only 3 exams no curve and is very rude. He will tell u to get out of his class at any moment.
Very strict-will throw you out in front of everyone, but only if you are rude first. come in late, take a seat in the BACK right away or he'll say something rude. HOWEVER, if you are there to learn, you will learn and don't have to worry about noises etc. because he demands respect in his class.
the teacher suckss.dont take him. i dont reccomend it. your better off with the other poli sci teacher. barnes is the rudest man alive!!!!
Very good, tests are mostly from notes, if not in the notes not on the test. For questions missed by most he reduces from the grade. Hard to fail this class. Knowing that it's not so hard helps to relax on tests and class is more enjoyable and actually I learn more.
He's not that bad all you have to is go to class and take notes and read the book. If you do that you will make at least a B.
Alot of people don't like Barnes because he his strict and will kick you out if you are late or talking. Tests are challanging. Attend class, take notes, and read the text and you should be ok. 3 tests and no final. Tests are 50 questions each(all true/false or multiple choice) and there is no homework!
I took Barnes for both 1336 and 1337 and he's a great teacher. The exams are easy and he gives you a chance to ask questions before every class in case you need help. You dont have to use the textook very much b/c the exams are mostly over his lecture. Highly recommend!
Very rude, class is average i guess, not hard not easy, but it's not enjoyable. Everyone tells me he is the hardest pols teacher for 1336 &1337
He is a bit rude, be in class on time or not at all since he likes to kick out people that are late or phones go off, he is very strict
Barnes is an awesome professor and i would highly recommend him if you plan on coming to class and paying attention. Sometimes going to his class is like going to watch a comedian perform. He's amazing.
DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is very government savvy, but if you want to bring up your GPA, or make at least a B or higher in POLS 1337, THIS PROF IS NOT FOR YOU. Hard tests, no review (its all about how well and how fast you can write in his class), and good luck staying awake. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT TAKE BARNES!!!!!
all lectures, but if you take good notes, his tests are pretty easy.
Dropped his class from first impression of his personality. Super scary in my opinion. Couldn't concentrate on his strict lecture plus he scared the pants off of me! My opinion- if you want to put up with him go for it, other than that take the other route. Very much into his subject.
Really amazing! He makes the class enjoyable and very funny sometimes. Just come to class take notes. Don't piss him off. Ex. No cell phones, Do not come to class late and expect to sit at the front!, No speaking during class, other than that he's awesome and has his pet peeves just like you and I do.
this is a very good professor and speaker. clear concise, and to the point. Straightforward making it very easy to follow and understand. Always listens to questions. A very good class, I enjoyed it very much. Wasn't hard at all, didnt even need my textbook.
i have never felt so disrespected by a teacher in my life. i understand that professors need to show that they are in charge but he could at least show the students respect. i needed him to sign my gradesheet for an extra-curricular activity that i was involved in & when i asked, he yelled at me, threw my pen down, & said i was wasting his time.
Walks out on his students if a cell phone goes off in class and that person doesn't confess.
OMG, where to start...he teaches really fast and goes over a lot. The test are hard, because they are over his lectures and the 5 chapters you have to read. he doesn't tell you what the test will be over...and don't let your phone go off or let him catch you talking, can you say "kicked out of class"...embarrassing!!!
This prof does not belong teaching! He is rude and arrogant, nothing is ever his fault (I know my ID number). Take someone else. True, he is knowledgeable in his field, but not worth the headache. If you so much as listen to another student who asks you "did I miss anything" he will throw you both out even if you don't reply to the other student.
If you want to avoid this prof's wrath my recommendation is: ditch class, read the book, get notes from a buddy, and show up only on exam day.
Okay-Guys I HATE POLS, however Prof Barnes made me LOVE IT. Yes he is strict and he dealing with a lot of people so he has to make rules like turn off your cell phone and dont talk, but he is a great teacher i have learned so much from him! Just show up take notes SKIM through the chapters in the book and you'll be fine-PS he curves the test grades
If you want an A with little to no effort for an easy core class take Howard or wiggington not Barnes...
I took him for both Pols I and II, made an A- or A in them, but honestly it was waaaay more work than it should've been. From the second he started talking I wrote non-stop, also you have to read the chapters. Don't expect to get an A unless you know a lot of people taking the class and review a lot. I'd recommend Howard.
i hated him..so rude, old and annoying. he would call u out if ur fone rings in class n tell u 2 get out of his class or he would walk out. talk so fast so its hard 2 take good notes...in general, DONT TAKE HIM!
His class is easy, you just need to go to class and read the book if you do that you wil do fine. He doesn't put up with people talking and thats awesome, and if your late don't walk up to the front for a seat. Sit in the back! or you will get kicked out. He's also kinda funny in his own way, esp if you know like current events. 3 test NO FINAL!
where to begin.although attendence isn't mandatory,u NEED to go to class.he doesnt post notes online, all questions on test are from his lectures & book.u need to read the book to pass.there are only 3 test, no final and the test are 50 questions each.he drops 3-4 questions from each test.i suggest u take a different professor.GOOD LUCK!!!
Very rude. Will just up and leave the lecture if someone's phone goes off. Do NOT be late to his class and try and sit in the front. You WILL get yelled at.
If you care at all about your college gpa you will NOT take this teacher. He is incomprehensible, and I have never met a teacher who wants all of his students to fail. University officials should fire him. He expects you to know things on the test that he doesnt teach, Never in my life have I been disgusted by an instructor and i have straight A's!
All the people that are writing good things about this professor are trying to Trick you into taking him! DO NOT take him if you actually want to pass.
HORRIBLE, RUDE, ARROGANT, OBNOXIOUS, DOWN RIGHT DISDAINFUL, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, FIND A SUBSIDAIRY..YOU WILL REGRET..
He is a horrible teacher!!!! he lectures way to fast!!!! The class is so boring. The only thing that is interesting is when he kicks people out.. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT TO PAST!
I think for the most part he just shows up without a lesson plan. He is boring. I got a C and even though I attended most of the classes and read the book. He kida rambles on and on. It's kind of fun listening to him yell at people and talk about current events, but other than that I really wish I hadn't taken this class.
At the beginning, I actually liked his class, but all that changed.ONLY good part of this class is no final and occasional joking. If there is any noise, like someone's cell phone going off he WILL punish the rest of the class and walk out and still test you on material he didn't cover. He will do whatever he wants, and won't care how it affects you.
well what can i say if you have a problem with not following rules don't take him actually if you have a problem with not following rules you shouldn't be in college at all like mention before he doesnt want cell phones in class no talking ect but ist'n that the same rules for any class he just enforces them more GO to class and you will pass!
Had him for both 1336 and 1337. Hes a good professor who's very knowledgeable and passionate about what hes teaching. Tests are all essay format and you have to talk about the specific things hes looking for. Just dont let your cell ring in class cuz he'll leave and youll still be responsible for what he wouldve covered.
This professor is only a jerk if you are. I don't believe asking you to turn off your cell phone or put it on silence for a mere hour and a half is too much to ask. I skipped over half of his lectures and managed to pull off a B just by reading the book. Then again, if you actually READ for all your classes you could probably graduate college.
I don't know what class some of these people took, but I've had Barnes for both his POLS sections (1336 & 1337) and ALL OF HIS TESTS ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE, he will also DROP QUESTIONS that most of the class missed. His ONLY essay exam is the make up exam, there is no final, and if you don't mess with him, he'll leave you alone.
this professor is very passionate about poli sci. Lectures are clear but boring. Go to class, review your notes and you will pass. his tests are unpredictable 50 multiple choice which come from both lecture and the book. I regret taking this class. take it at community college. i pulled off a C.
This guy is a nightmare I barely studied took a test made a C I busted my buns for the next test...made a C. All the other people I have talked about him with had the same issue. He's okay personality wise though. If you want an A...this class isn't for you.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. Do not take this class if you're not ready to work hard. Reading text books is mandatory if you want to pass. Attendance is not mandatory but again if you want to pass the class you have to take good notes. I like his lectures and I'm definitely going to take him again next semester.
To the people who are saying getting an A in his class is not possible - it is possible if you work hard. I got A's on his tests. His tests are not that hard if you actually read the textbook, take notes and study them.
Good teacher. Lectures can get boring. Read the textbook and take good notes. Tests can be tricky. 50 questions each M/C and T/F
Straight out lecture. No powerpoint, no nothing. He's boring, goes off on tangents. If you like to listen to boring stories without any visual, not knowing what part of the book to know or like to do tests without knowing wth will be on it 'cause you wont have a review sheet or anything, and you type at the speed of light, this class is for you.
You must read the textbook to pass and take very good notes in lectures. His tests can be hard but he will throw out questions that the majority of the class missed due to a misunderstanding or something. You have to work hard but he is very knowledgable
Despite what most people say, this class is not hard at all! All I did was review, I didn't study hardcore, just a few hours before the exam. The 1st test I studied a lot and didn't do so good because I was studying the wrong way. Go to class to take GOOD notes, if you take your laptop make sure you type fast. Study/review terms from the book!
A lot of people do not like this professor because he will kick you out if you walk in late or if you talk in class, but the class is ok overall. Tests are challanging. You MUST read the book and study key points and pay close attention to his lectures. 80% of his tests come from lectures. 3 Tests worth 1/3 of your grade each! Not a blowoff class!
Overall, I enjoyed his class, if you take the time to read the chapters from the book assigned for each exam and thoroughly review your notes you will do good. Don't slack off because you will not pass, also don't make distracting noises or come in late and try to sit in the front. If you do your job and be a good student, you're going to do fine.
He's a great professor but his class is a little hard. The test are kind of hard if you dont read the book. Always attend class because most of the stuff he talks about is from lecture. Dont come in late-he'll call you out and embarrass you!He gives no extra credit so make sure you do well on the tests.
Interesting material, but not an easy class. Tests are difficult and hard. An A in the class is not impossible, but a B or C is if you study hard. Read the book and attend every lecture. Most of his stuff comes from the lecture, but if you don't read the book you will do bad too because he includes terms from book in the test.3tests worth 33.3%each
Barnes class is not a walk in the park. I recommend you going to class every day. THe tests are unpredictable, but i did notice if you study the key terms throughout out the text you can do pretty well. I really dont recommend anyone taking his class unless you are an upper classmen. YOu must pay attention to what he say in class!!!
Very difficult class. Not an easy A! Most people get C's and D's in his class. No extra credit. 3 tests worth 1/3 your grade. Not a very nice professor and has his good and bad days! Show up to class on time with the chapters read and be prepared to take notes all lecture period. Each tests covers 7-9 chapters.I'd suggest another professor.
Ok professor. Read the textbook and go to every class. 60% of material on tests comes from lectures.
Bad, rude, lecture is totally pointless, and annoying. Might as well not go to class, just read the book.
Barnes is hated by many and loved by few. Personally, I think is is hilarious and witty. People can't handle his sarcasm. The people that complain about his rudeness are the ones that don't pay attention in class. He just doesn't like stupid questions. The class was enjoyable, but its all about the note-taking, as are most college classes.
Sounds like the Clear Eyes man; he is not very approachable; class is boring and he often swears during his lectures. He does not clarify information. I had to take the class the following semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR if you want a good grade. I studied all the time and only got C's in both. I took POLS 1337 with him, also POLS 1336. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! He is rude, doesn't give a crap about his students, won't answer your emails. He doesn't let you see your tests to see what you missed and doesn't give you a clear lesson plan.
If you go to class and at least skim the book you'll get a B. He only has 3 test and no final, multiple choice. Lectures are clear and he adds some wittiness to it.
This class was pretty tough. I went to class every day (took notes on a laptop) and read every single chapter. Barnes is a bit scary/unpredictable, I stuck through the class and ended up with a B+. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ EVERY CHAPTER AND GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY IN ORDER TO DO WELL.
If you do not enjoy political science, DO NOT take his class. His lectures are long and vague. His tests reflect his lectures. If you don't like political science, you will find this class extremely boring and will zone out during his lectures.I enjoy pols, but still found it challenging.Putting in extra effort required.
He knows his subject, but is very strict, can be very rude, with dry humor, and very unapproachable! I would NOT recommend anyone taking him! You'd have a better chance at passing with a decent B or higher if you take Timothy Howard. I managed to get a C, and its hard to get even 1 point extra credit... very hard!
I'm taking him POLS 1336 right now. He's knowlegedgeable teacher. But i have a problem for taking notes in his class. Bcz my english isn't really well, and his lecture so long so i don't know how to catch up what he said. I've lots of depression for this class.
Pay attention in class(listen to what he EMPHASIZES) and read the textbook. That's all. He's a good teacher if you like the material, he gives a slight curve on tests and he'll answer any questions you have as long as you ask in class. Yes, he's strict, but after hearing people ask the same question 50 times I can understand it. Loved the class
I can honestly say that this is the worst professor I have ever had in my undergraduate experience! Don't take him, wait for another teacher or take this course over the summer!
He's actually not THAT bad. To be honest this actually is my most interesting class I have in my schedule. He answers your questions clearly, he's actually kinda easy if you just listen to the lectures. Just write flashcards for things you don't understand. For textbook, just study vocabulary and you'll be fine.
He's very hard, You work so hard just to get a D or a C. PLEASE, PLEASE don't take! Beware of this teacher...HE"S HARD.
Hard professor. Tests are tricky and no extra credit is offered. Most people end up with a C in the class, or lower. You must read each chapter in the book and attend all lectures. If you do one but not the other, you most likely will fail. no attendence is taken but you need to go to lectures. Spend 3 hours a week outside class studying!
He's not as bad as I heard. His class is pretty straightforward. I recommend bringing a voice recorder to class because he tests mostly (not all) from his lectures. Remember to read the textbook (or at least, skim).
Worst professor you can take, do NOT take him, he will screw your GPA up.
Tests are 95% lecture, and he doesn't tolerate talking in class. Has a funny, sarcastic sense of humor. Take good notes and it is easy to get an A.
Good professor, but he will shock younger students with his blunt attitude. He is very straight forward and lays out everything for you to the letter. You must follow his rules, or he will call you out. Be respectful of him and his class, and you have nothing to worry about. It is kind of entertaining watching him boot someone for disrupting class.
Attendance is definitely mandatory for this class since it is lecture-based. If you study your notes you should do fine since his exams are heavily on what he discusses during his lectures.
Great professor. He's very straight forward, just follow his instructions and you will be just fine. There are 3 main exams. The first 2 were very lecture based with some terms from the textbook, the third seemed about half lecture based and half textbook. I liked listening to him, he sometimes even had a few jokes that helped me keep listening. =)
Really good teacher, he's really knowledgeable. but he is probably the meanest teacher you'll ever have. I got kicked out of the final for asking for a pencil and the test weren't even handed out yet. Don't breath to loud if you take him because he just might kick you out. no joke
HATED THE CLASS
Professor Barnes actually wasn't that bad of a professor. Most people I talked to were just not skilled enough to actually READ THE TEXTBOOK! The Teacher does NOT go over EVERYTHING in the text, and it is the STUDENT'S responsibility to read at least the key terms.
worst professor ever dnt take him. it killed me to pull off a B! most students didnt even make that! beware!!
he knows about this subject but his tests are extremely hard, YOU MUST READ THE TEXT, good luck if you decide to take him!
He was a great teacher, and it was interesting. I recommend him. Just be able to deal with sarcasm.
Professor Barnes is quite difficult. Attendance is practically mandatory, most of the test is from his lectures. TAKE GOOD NOTES. Very intimidating. Will kick you out for insane reasons [like flipping your pages too fast, no joke] Beware, if you're a very good student you'll pass
He teaches with no visual aids, very monotone.
This class was bad for me. The professor is clear in his lectures but he has a temper. He will kick someone out of class for crazy reasons. His tests are hard and will not drop any but he will give you some extra points for frenquently missed questions and put them on the next exam. You really need your textbook because there is a lot of reading
if you have a choice, ensure you don't take his class.
I give Barns an A+. Just go to class and study the vocabulary in the book and you will get an A. Also you will need to actually use your brain on his tests, as some questions are very tricky. LOL he throws people out of class for talking while he lectures.
At the begining of this semester i thought this was the toughest class to pass because i failed the first test but then when i realize all you had to do was take good notes and study definition i did good on the nexxt 2 test and made a B in the class
Not an easy teacher but if u want to learn useful applications in politics it's interesting
This dude is hard-core! you dont wanna f**k with him or he'll throw you out in a heart beat! No power points what so ever, his tests are hard, but if you read the textbook and pay attention to half of what he says I guarantee you atleast a B... DONT talk when he starts to talk!
I would study for days and not be able to pass his multiple choice tests, but then with minimal studying I took the short answer test that was comprehensive and supposed to be SOOO much harder and got an A+. Would not recommend this professor, especially if you are just taking core classes.
Honestly all you have to do is take detailed notes and review those for the tests. If you do that, you're set. If you're lazy and you don't go to class and never study...don't expect to pass. I've taken him in 1336 and 1337. In 1337 I got a B (taken first) and 1336 I got an A. It IS possible, you just have to put a little effort into it.
Barns has 3 rules. Sit down in a chair, Shut up, and Listen. The tests always have a few trick/hard questions, but he always drops like 4-5 questions off of each test, so if you go to class and pay attention and take good notes, your grade will be in the A range.
I enjoyed this professor. I thought his lectures were interesting and he was a funny guy. He drops a few questions on his test which is helpful. However, because attendance inst mandatory, many people dont go to class. If you want to pass you MUST attend.
I loved this prof. Very funny anecdotes, but textbook was BORING, and you must read it to pass. alot of wht he says is cool, smart and funny, but pertains little to the tests, and i barely passed. very strict about tests; only 3 multiple choice tests, but no make-up tests or other assignments. i still enjoyed it.
overall lectures are interesting if you like the subject...however tests are hard and he is arrogant and couldn't care less about you. will answer questions during reviews, but will probably make u feel stupid. no extra credit, will drop top missed questions. GO to class and read the book, it can be done but TAKE HOWARD instead if you can
Thought he was grest. Reading the book determined if you got an A or a B . Didn't read the book easy B.Tests are about lectures. Pretty common sence kind of professor.
I learned so much in this class. His lectures are so interesting. His tests are not easy but if you read the book, take good notes and study those notes, you'll be just fine. Don't fall back. Start studying early and you'll get an A.
Please READ, study the terms, and go to class and you will be fine. Also, he might not tell you this but if class starts at 10:30 and you come in at 10:28, DO NOT try to sit near the front. He will kick you out without an explanation.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable. I learned a lot!
