Good teacher, knows his stuff
Good prof, helpful and good sense of humor
He really clarifies tough stories...and he has VERY interesting wardrobe choices
very fair, Knows his stuff very well. Very prepared for class
Awful. Expected Faulkner, Steinbeck, etc; got Spike Lee, Carver, etc.
Very witty, dry sense of humor, class is always interesting. Extremely helpful with assignments. Great sense of humor. Highly recommended.
Extremely helpful with assaignments and essays. Class was sometimes a little repetitive.
a nice prof, if you suck up to him and make like you love the material. get bored, and he becomes a jerk who blames students for a boring class. do some work yourself Bartley!
Awfully pretentious, but then he'd be the first to admit it.
Keeps class interesting. A little odd but that's what makes him interesting. Discusses topics important to the course. Always willing to try and see different concepts from a new angle. Great sense of humor. Stay on your toes or you'll miss a good joke.
Amazing person and professor! Very understanding towards a students needs and is flexible when it comes to assignments. The material is very interesting and challenging. Highly recommended!
Good prof. Good class. But if class discussion isn't your thing, avoid it.
You know a prof has too little to say when he or she gives participation marks. That's right folks: this guy will reward you for expressing your opinion and punish you for not, even in his so-called "lecture" courses. And talk about self-absor
He is the best teacher I have ever had and I aspire to achieve his intelligence and humor.
Honestly, the best educator I've ever had, and that's saying a lot. I actually put off late assignments just to attend his class. Hilarious, in that odd, intellectual way. Expect lots of laughs.
A great teacher--but "flamboyant"? Are we talking about the same guy?
American Literature: He is an awesome prof. Don't expect hand-out marks, but he keeps everything interesting and is hilarious!
Opinions on this guy are polarized for good reason. He appeals to those who like the sort of lazy lit course where you sit around and talk and every opinion matters equally. He doesn't appeal to those who demand a critical thought now and then.
very strait foreward
I thought this prof was boring at first, but as the year progresses I like him more and more. He's always approachable and always encouraging. Good guy, good class.
Bartley is the best professor in the universe. Hilarious, insightful, and brilliant. Anyone who wrote anything negative here is just jealous of his genius mind.
intelligent and witty, very insightful and fascinating to listen to, this guy makes my day.
Very approachable and reasonable...take his class if you want to learn and be entertained while doing so
Wonderful professor! Highly Recommended! Someone! Please! Teach him how to write the letter "M"!
Very approachable and helpful.
Clear, insightful; Moby Dick makes sense now
He could not come more highly recommended. He is clear, hilarious, and wise. He chooses interesting and relevant works and teaches them in a manner unparalleled. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed and improve. Do not pass up the opportunity to learn from him.
Bartley is a really good guy, not my favorite prof. He is pretty vague in his expectations and marks relatively hard on essays considering the lack of conclusive explanations and analysis in class. However, he is a really nice man and will try to help in whatever way he can.
puritans are all of a sudden the most fascinating topic ON EARTH because of him and christianity and whales and America and oh well just about everything we discussed, i'd listen to him describe paint drying
Likes to make jokes, but he always has the same facial expression so we never knew when to laugh. He's pretty good with his English but does pick favourites. Calls on random people to read out loud.He doesn't mark his essays too hard.
Bartley has all the personal qualities you could want in a prof; he's very approachable, friendly and helpful. He marks easy enough but could be a little more clear in his expectations. I never got bored of going to class and this was a 6 credit. He tosses a lot of philosophy into the mix.
A fun, intelligent, and easy-going professor who can both lead discussions and provide his own insight. He's nice to everyone, so I'm still not sure if he liked me as much as I liked him!
I loved Prof. Bartley's class. He is an easy-going, intelligent and very entertaining prof. Incidentally, he also a really good guy. As an earlier post stated, he can both lead a discussion and provide his own insight - a valuable skill in an english professor. More than anything you'll have fun in this class, but you'll also learn something.
The best prof I have ever had. He is able to let himself grow from learning the thoughts of new people, yet joins in when the conversation gets off topic. A very good teacher and a great human.
He's probably the quirkiest prof I've had. His humour and sarcasm is made unique and all the funnier from a consistent deadpan expression, and eyes that seem lost in space. He makes the material very clear and approachable, and always listens to the students rather than toting his intellectual guns.
Bartley's everything I hope for from an English prof - great lectures, great discussion, bizarre sense of humour, eclectic fashion sense, helpful, office that looks and smells like a used bookstore. Highly recommended!
The class was painful. William Bartley is indeed a nice man who tries to encourage discussion. However, listening to my fellow student's insights made me feel like I was in a remedial class. I thought... it'll be okay! He seems like a fair man. My resulting average drop disagrees.
Smart. funny--he asks a lot of questions and sort of draws you into things.
Nice guy. Knows the subject very thoroughly. Relies way too much on class discussion. The final had questions that were much more complex than what he taught. Tough marker on essays.Easy to talk to. I had no idea what I was supposed to be learning because it's basically (stupid, annoying) students who talked all class. He needs to run the class
Pretty awful, do yourself a favor and do not take this class. Hard marker and relies heavily on class discussion. If your head is full of unnecessary opinions and you feel compelled to express them, you would fit in well in this class - if not you're just stuck listening to them for three hours a week.
The best class I've taken. Lots of discussion yes but this was good. He always filled in with his own insights. He asked questions that made you think.
I really liked film studies. Yes, he is a tough marker, but he provides lots of suggestions and comments in his marking and lets you know how you can improve. I got irritated with the pretentious film snobs in the class who felt the need to put in their two cents about everything, just to hear the sound of their own voice.
I don't understand all of these "hard marker" comments. I found him to be a surprisingly easy marker! He's such a nice guy, and very helpful. My attendance was spotty and I barely used the textbooks at all, and I still managed to do very well in the class.
I think I'm one of those film snobs mentioned earlier. I never used to speak much in class but in this one I learned that thinking and learning means talking. The class was great and I recommend Bartley to anyone./
Super prof. Tough material. Puritans, Moby-Dick, Trancendentalism especially, but he made everything very clear. Loved class discussion.Very good sense of humour. Emily Dickinson! he made that crazy lady sing.
Professor Bartley was my best professor this year. I'm a science student but I will take other courses in English especially from him. My favorite book was "The Wife of Martin Guerre." It really knocked my socks off. He is very funny in a quiet way. Flag this rating
he's a tough marker, so it will really help to go and visit him after class so you know what hes looking for. very nice and personable guy. had him for Film class and loved it!
Excellent professor. Very helpful, very welcoming, which was good because the assignments were challenging. I love film and I loved the films he assigned to the class. I learned a lot about how to "read" a film.
Great prof! Very helpful! I like how someone else put it, "he is funny in a quiet way". Attendance is mandatory, class time is mainly used for class discussions so if you're not one to throw your two cents in on everything, this class may not be your cup of tea. Would take his class again!
Very funny! Extremely intelligent to, quite the heartthrob!
He is an amazing prof! He is very intelligent and helpful. He is clear with how he marks for assignments and quizzes. I cannot wait to take another class with him.
Great Prof!In class discussion is key to understanding works studied but I did not contribute too terribly much and still received most of the participation marks just for being there. He has a fantastic sense of humour and knows how to poke fun at students without being mean about it. Exams are extremely fair and gives lots of feedback on essays.
Very good Prof! He does not tell you what to think; rather he prefers students to lead discussions and share their opinions regarding the films viewed weekly in class. This is difficult class to get into and it's easy to see why. The subject (intro to film) is interesting and Prof. Bartley makes studying in depth enjoyable.
Extremely boring class, what is expected from the student is very unclear. Marks VERY hard and his feedback is useless (if you can even read it). I never wanted to take english in the first place and this prof made me hate english class even more. Probably a nice dude but bad prof overall.
Really good prof. He provides a lot of time to work on essays, and if you are having some trouble he's always willing to help.
I had poetry class. He seems nice but he always has the same facial expression which scares me. His class is highly led by class discussions. All the assignments were take-home which was awesome! If you take notes while he is talking, really helps. He made me love poems, i never used to! Its a shocker. haha Marks not tough and not easy. Good prof.
Very interesting prof. He was really into his subject matter (intro to film) and very passionate. He provided us with extra films because he wanted us to have the best experience possible. Would recommend him and his class. Very funny.
Very nice professor, extremely understanding should unforeseen circumstances arise. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches, which is amazing, as other profs aren't nearly as interesting and charismatic.
I found it hard to focus in his class, due to his monotone voice. He got distracted easily and would often lose his thought in the middle of a sentence. He was also not very clear on assignments and would take forever to return marks. On the other hand, he did have a sense of humour and was a easy and fair marker on papers.
Yhje best prof I had this year. Smart, funny, interesting
This is a great class--great films, some of them (like Bringing Up Baby amazingly good); great instructor--polite, funny, insightful man whose enthusiasm is infectious. Could answer emails a little more quickly
It was an honour to be in this class. I loved every minute of it. What I didn't expect was that he would be so humorous.
Will is a wonderful prof. Hilarious, knows his stuff and cares about his students. The material for the class he chose is interesting and relevant to the course. Highly recommend taking an english class from him.
Horrific. Very rude. I did very well, but I would never take another class from him again.
I've taken several classes from Professor Bartley, and he is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Courteous, helpful, insightful You won't regret taking a course from him. Discussion is important for him, and he really makes it work. Film class especially good
I took my first year english with Prof. Bartley and I could not recommend him more. His class is challenging but well worth what you learn from his lectures and his critique on writing assignments. One of the 5 papers from all year (a 6 credit course) was a re-write of a previous paper.
Dont take him that all I have to say
Dr. Bartley is the best; he uses humour to make class interesting and he truly is a brilliant man. He isn't the hardest marker, but you do have to have clear points and be a proficient writer to receive good grades. Skipping his class isn't an issue as his lectures are fun to be in, and he also gives marks for attendance and participation
I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're determined to take English, you could do worse. It's easy to do ok in this class, but the literature choices were disappointing. Bartley is a brilliant prof and a strong lecturer, but you'd be better served taking a less subjective writing credit if you care about grades.
His class was fun and challenging. Sometimes he was unclear with what he expected but at those times he's easy to talk to and explains himself well, he's very kind and not too tough of a marker.
First time having him for ENG288 and he is awesome! He is very insightful when it comes to films! Gives good feedback on papers and gives very interesting lectures on films. Would gladly take again.
Bartley is a really nice prof! He is a sweetheart and is always willing to give extensions if needed. He's very knowledgeable in film and I found his class fairly interesting. He did go off on tangents and then would lose his train of thought often, but if you were ever confused you could meet with him and he would explain more thoroughly.
I really enjoyed Prof. Bartley! He takes attendance so you have to go but he's an interesting prof to listen to. Very flexible with due dates and encourages students to visit him in office hours to fix up writing errors. I definitely would take another class with him!
Professor Bartley is a great guy! The stories and books he makes students read are interesting, but sometimes difficult to understand. He gives small quizzes for most of the books, but they're very easy as long as you study for at least 30 minutes. He's funny, nice, and not too harsh of a marker. Definitely would take again.
Professor Bartley has been awesome! His lectures are question based and the readings in his class do not seem like too much work. He has a cool, dry humour and many times made the class laugh. Id totally take his class again, I really enjoyed it!
Prof. Bartley is a great guy, however during covid he got carried away posting lectures. He expects you to read a new book every week (i didn't) and posts around 3-5 hours of lectures a week. Its so easy to fall behind. Only 2 essays, and quizzes are unbelievably easy with no time limit. He talks slow but lectures are pre recorded.
He is awesome! Truly great prof, especially for a first year English course.
Bartley is a kind man whose class I enjoyed. The workload was not too heavy. He always made sure that students knew he was available for any extra clarification on topics and would offer to set up one on one Web-Ex meetings. One complaint is the final, which was take home and estimated to only take three hours or less, but it took me about twelve.
We only did two essays all semester and several easy quizzes. He posted a lot of online lectures even on the weekends. The class was decent up until the final which we had 24 to work on. It was 2 essays and 6 short answer paragraphs. It took me about 12 hours to complete but he said it should not take more than 3. His marking was also unclear.
Professor Bartley is a great professor for your first year English course! He provides adequate time for you to be able to do your essays and he is always easily accessible for conversations through email or scheduled meetings. You can fall behind very easily (I took it online), but as long as you watch the lectures you should do good in his class!
Dr Bartley is wonderful and cares about his students. He is super understanding and overall a great professor. Take english with him you wont regret it
as an international student I do not recommend taking your english course with him. he does not respond to your emails. unless you give him a call . He is a tough grader when it comes to essays. His lectures are boring. I regret taking my english course with him. Just DONT!
I enjoyed learning with Prof Bartley! I really liked that he gives students creative freedom on paper topics and encourages us to participate in discussion! I had so much fun! :-)
Loves this class. Prof made understanding the material easy.
I would definitely recommend taking ENG 113 with Professor Bartley. He provided many essay topics to choose from and marked very fairly. The midterm and final were very similar in style so there were no surprises in his class. This class was definitely a mark booster.
Prof Bartley was nice, and knew a lot! However, it was often hard to balance all the quizzes, and its quite work-heavy. In addition, he is often not quick to respond to emails. So if you are someone like me who sometimes needs clarification then maybe consider a different prof or email 2-3 weeks in response.
There were four assignments for this entire class, including(!!) the final exam. I only had marks back on two assignments going in to the final, so no one had any idea what their mark was going in. Do not be fooled - attending wasn't necessary because lectures were useless. Please run from this class. It was not worth the headache.
Lovely guy. His lectures tended to be a bit dry but that's mostly because literally no one in class participated... like at all. He is an easy grader as well and doesn't intentionally try to stump his students. He took some time to provide feedback on material but his feedback was helpful.
He is a true gem. I felt bad for him because he is really passionate about his subject and no one participated in his class. There are textbooks for stories and pop quizzes. if you read then you should be good. Also I missed a quiz and asked if I could do it even though he said no before but he let me so yea. Take his class!!
Prof Bartley is a passionate professor, he cares about his students and will change deadlines to allow students to do well. He wants to get to know you, so participate! He will never show judgment to any of your answers even if you say the "wrong" thing. There's a fair bit of reading, but assignments aren't bad and he grades very fairly.
thank u for introducing me to the beauty of cinema! there were around 3 papers that i had to write, but not too daunting, he makes personalized videos for feedback and posts them on canvas when he grades papers and i really appreciated that! my fave is learning about ozu and watching early spring!
