sooo easy!!
I love the fact that he interacts with the class and has fun with a boring subject...
He was the best math professor ever! He was very clear to a math idiot like me. He was even funny. I got an awesome grade. My recitation teacher Donald Ambrose was awesome too. Thank god I had them both.
He's a very good teacher. Not strict at all. Funny, nice guy. And best of all...you actually learn in his class unlike some other BS professors.
Awesome professor! I loved him, very funny, makes the class easy, very helpful. Best math professor i think in the school.
Greatest math professor ever with enthusiam.
He's one of the few professor at Stony Brook that can teach. Calculus is less threating with him as the professor. He also lets class of early every lecture, right when you had enough.
this guy suuuucks!! mediocre teacher, when unable to solve a problem the biggest bull****ter i know. --- the comments below were probably written by himself!
I graduated two years ago but I still remember my freshman calculus hottie of a teacher Mr. Bernhard. He's very passionate about teaching and he's a great guy.
Explains things mad clearly... not hard
Bill Bernhard understands that not everyone is in love with mathematics, so he doesn't rattle off a bunch of math-speak. He's a very approachable, funny, down-to-earth guy. You can tell he loves his job, and he's great at it. If u have to take math...
self absorbed. thinks hes gods gift to teaching. cocky. i agree that he wrote the comments below. get over yourself.
Awsome teacher. Explains material and objectives well. Understands the students as well as how to help them.
Hes a real caring person
Awsome teacher. No question, he was my favorite.

Bill is possibly one of the best teachers I have ever had. There is no one more concerned for the well being of his students, and I hope one day I will be half the teacher he is today.
He's awesome! Take every class you can take with this guy!!!
A fine instructor who seems to have a lot of heart, though little interest in the loftier elements of mathematics.

hes an awesome teacher, plus the class is really easy...it helped to have alredy taken this class in high school...then bomb the math placement so i couldnt take calc :P
Awesome guy. You keep teaching us how to teach, Professor Bernhard..!
This guy is amazing! He teaches the class like we're in high school, but treats us like adults. He is really fair and will keep explaining it to you till you understand. I wish he taught ALL the math classes!!!
He is an AWESOME professor. He makes the topic extremely easy, which makes the class easy to pass with at least a B. Just make sure to go to your recitation because that is 40% of your grade. Do well on exams, quizzes, and do your homework. Believe it or not, they count. But the professor is VERY good, one of my favorites.
You will never, ever, ever find a better teacher or person. Having him as a professor made coming to Stony Brook worth while. You should beg and fight to have him as a professor, math will never seem so easy.
Very good professor. Makes it seem like high school again. His midterm and 1st quiz were easy. the 2nd quiz was a bit difficult, however the final was very unfair. I was not expecting this from him.
This guy I think is overrated. I don't compare him to god. He taught an extremely easy class, very well. Everyone in Ward Melville or Stony Brook should hve the Berhand experience.
bill is AWSOME he is one of the only math professors that actualy makes learning math berable if you are not a math person take his class but wach out for his T.A's they arent as awsome
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE MAN! Bill is honestly the best math professor, teacher, instructor that i have ever had. If you need precalc or calc and his class is open TAKE HIM
I love Bernhard! Iam not a math person, he makes learning math extremely easy. His homework questions and tests sometimes can be deceiving. You cant just attend lecture and expect you'll have no problem doing homeworks and do well on tests. You kinda have to think on your own. He's very funny and intelligent. He's kinda cute too.
Bill is an excellent teacher, he had a good sense of humor and and made math easy to learn. He's the best!
Bill is awesome. He brought so much of his knowledge of the real world and gave us so much insight on "how" to teach. No busy work! Everything he had us do was worthwhile.
amazing teacher, clarifies all questions in class.
Terrific math teacher. He makes math a lot more fun than it normally is! Also he takes his lectures slow and makes sure you understand what is happening when you do a problem.
One of the best math professors at stony brook. TAKE HIM! he makes math fun.
Bill is a great guy. He is friendly and always trying to make math fun. This class isn't the easiest. Don't take it if you don't need it for your major! There are easier classes for that.
Bill is a great teacher he makes Math interesting. The class is challenging but do the HW and go to lecture and you should be fine. Forget the math learning center it's useless!
Great professor! His TA's suck.... well at least some of them
best math professor at stony! makes math interesting and fun. i always had a hard time with math and i actually understood lots of what we did because he taught so well. take any class you can with him!
Took Calc 1 with him this summer. Great professor. Explained everything very thoroughly and kept things interesting and fun. I highly recommend taking him if you have a hard time with math!!!
I had a lot of trouble throughout the summer semester with his course and tried to get help from him and all he could tell me that taking the course in the summer was intense... waste of time and money... garbage
Hes a great teacher.. but not a great professor he's kinda lazy does not go into depth..didnt have office hours..all classes ended an hour early..just gives hard and fast rules to work with problems..if you are really interested in math id not recommend him or this class take 141..but if you just want to get an A and get done..he's your guy..
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER! He really helps you understand math and makes everything simple. He explains everything well and makes the class seem as if you were in HS again. Always stops to ask if anyone has questions. Easy class as long as you go to lecture you'll do good on the tests. Review the HW and webassign (such a pain). He's funny too =]
awesome
Very Funny and entertaining. He makes it easy to sit through a math lecture.
AWESOME PROFESSOR. He makes Math very interesting. If you think you're not good at math then take 123 with him. He'll show you the ropes. 2 midterms, 1 final. And it's true that some of his TAs suck, especially since some of them are fobs. For me, listening to my fob TA was counterproductive because his way of teaching was much more confusing.
Bill (he goes by his first name bc he's cool) is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is an amazing educator, he teaches extremely well and makes math easy to understand. He goes through lots of examples in class, answers all your questions thoroughly, and provides lots of examples/problems. His tests and homework are very fair.
Bill is really nice. I love this class. The grading is fair. His explanation is clear. But he is a lazy instructor. No office hour and always free us an hour early.
I was teriified when I first found out I would be taking pre-cal being that I did not have math my entire senior yr, but Bill made it entertaining and I learned a lot in his class. He teaches on the top of his head which shows he know's his stuff! I recommend him to anyone taking pre-cal! I loveeeee Bill! ohh yea that's what we call him!
I loved this class. Math was never my thing, the highest math I took was Geometry. I came into this class. I loved him, he was funny, well prepared and knew the material. He taught very well, with examples to back up everything. He always encourages to ask questions during lecture and after. HE has a very good way of teaching, and honestly is the be
honestly the best professor at SBU. Usually math professors do not do a good job in explaining, but he does. He has an intense passion for teaching and making sure everyone gets the material .. take him, he will get you a good grade provided you do your part in revising the material after class. I LOVE HIM. :)
I love bill. Hes a really cool professor and sometimes funny. He explains everything really clear. Just pay attention in class and you will do just fine.
Bill is an amazing teacher. He is really clear and he doesn't mind if you interrupt him with a question. I actually enjoy going to math now. I would recommend him to anyone.
AMAZING teacher. I actually look forward to going to his class. He's absolutely hysterical, and explains everything so well.
I never thought a calculus class could be so hilarious. Great teacher as well. Everything was crystal clear.
Best math professor in SBU! Thanks Bill
Best Mat professor at Stony Brook. Musch better than the advance classes professors. He should be a 131 professor.
HE IS A MUST TAKE! Not only is he hilarious, he is an amazing instructor. I enjoyed his class very much, his lectures are clear and his test we're fair. I would take him again without a doubt!
Bill is awesome! i hate math but his class was always fun and he makes everyone laugh. He makes the material extremely easy to understand, and is really really really helpful. I don't think i ever got an A in a math class in high school and i got one in his class which is pretty unbelievable. Overall really great class and amazing professor.
THE BEST TEACHER!!! Take him if you can!!! Makes everything VERY clear and makes class fun. He also makes the exams fair. He's awesomee.
Hes the man.
on top of the fact that he is a great professor, he is hilarious as well. he makes me actually want to go to lecture. tests are alright as long as you know the material and study beforehand.
seriously TAKE HIM!!!!!!!! He is THE BEST!!! He explains everything so clearly, and he is freaking hilarious! He really made me wanna go to class. The test were fair if u studied and did the homework. I got an A in his class!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!
Bill is awesome!
there is not a single negative thing to say about bill. he's hilarious and one of the best teachers in stony brook. i dumped my lecturer for him.
BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. He is amazingly funny, and explains the concepts rather well. I wish I had him for calc. :(
he is definitely overrated. he only teaches you enough that u pass the course. the class really didn't prepare me for calc
This is probably one of the best professors ever in Stony Brook. Easy A. If your not good at math. Take it. Huge curve.
Bill is an excellent teacher who is funny and keeps the class engaged. He is also very clear and his tests are extremely fair. If you go to class and do the homework you will get an A
The best math teacher I have ever had. If you take calc in SB this guy is who you want teaching. Awesome lecturer, funny, engaging and helpful. MAT 125 was a breeze and I am not a math person. This guy is just awesome in general AND speaks english, huge plus.
Probably the most helpful math teacher you will EVER have. He makes things ridiculously clear, and he makes everything hysterical :D
He's like any other math teacher. If you don't understand the material, you NEED to seek help or you will be screwed for the tests. He's a good teacher, and will explain things in full clarity. I'd take him again
Best teacher ever. He keeps the class engaged, and only teaches what we need to know. Yes he is smart, but that doesn't stop him from being a good teacher. He brings fun into mathematics. If you work hard and seek help you will be fine :-)
Great teacher, keeps the class funny and interesting. Has an aptitude for education
Hands down the best math teacher I have ever had. He makes math come to life in a way that no other teacher I have had could do.
Bill is an amazing professor. The best math professor I've ever had. Makes things so easy to understand and he's really funny too. Never lectures the whole time (>1hr). The tests are hard though.
The best math teacher I have ever had. He is extremely understanding and caring. He is also very helpful and funny! I'm so lucky to have him for calc next semester. I am not a math person and he makes math bearable and i actually get excited to attend his class!
This man...is heaven sent. I am a horrible math student. I had him for pre calc and calc 2. He so clear in teaching the material. And he is one of the most generous graders ever. If Thanks to him, I can graduate. Amazing professor. Best math teacher at stony brook. Just make sure you go to class. He does half the work and you do the other half.
Bill is top notch but I failed because of the TA they barely spoke English, however Bill is awesome he explains everything well but its the TA he has.
Bill is an extremely friendly and helpful professor. He fully explains each concept. And doesn't make you feel stupid or dumb for not understanding something or asking a question. Makes the class enjoyable by telling jokes. He always ends the lectures early. I would highly recommend anyone to take his class.
The Best Math Professor! Hands Down!
Listen. I HATE math. Math is the bane of my existence. If you have a math question, you're better off asking a toddler than asking me. HOWEVER, Prof. Bernhard was easily the best professor I've ever had at Stony Brook. He's super involved with his students, he teaches at a nice pace, and the homeworks and tests are pretty easy. If you can, take him
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. Keep in mind that easiness has nothing to do with him but with the course coordinator who makes the tests. His classes are never boring, despite it being math, and he does a great job explaining the topics. If you cant get in his class I suggest skipping your other lectures and going to his.
This professor is AMAZING. I literally SUCK at math. He made precalculus easy and interesting and he is freaking HILARIOUS. He makes the class interesting you and actually look forward to the class. I'm rocking the class with an A!! and I SUCK at math. I highly recommend Bill
This man knows how to teach Calc
great teacher, easily the best math professor at stony brook
This man makes a challenging subject very understandable. Stony brook should definitely give this guy a raise because not many could do the job better.
I skipped my actual lecture hall and instead went to his class. He was so well-liked and able to convey the material so well that the lecture hall was packed to the brim with people sitting the aisles, easily 100 people extra over capacity with students from other lecture times because he made the math understandable.
Best Professor Ever!
so i took bill last semester when he taught 123. the whole class just loves the dude. hes funny and tries to make the worst subject in school interestering. he is able to get ur attention and makes a hard subject very clear and easy to understand. bill is the best math professor in stony brook period. its in ur best interest to attend every class
Bill is amazing. He made calculus so understandable. CALCULUS! He made calculus fun and interesting! I always looked forward to his class! I highly recommend Bill for MAT 123 and 125. I wish he taught 126 though :( Anyway, Bill is amazing. TAKE HIM FOR ANY MATH COURSE
Bill is a really good professor. Makes everything clear. Tells awesome stories and gives Snapple facts. You can tell he loves teaching and calculus. Take him.
I suck at math to start out with. William Bernard however, is one of the best at explaining mathematical concepts, than any other teacher in my entire life. He is truly an excellent teacher of the subject and truly an amazing person as well. Don't be afraid to ask him questions if you are confused after class.
Awful grader
Easy class with difficult exams! Must go to class but Bill is a GREAT PROFESSOR! If you do not go you're not only missing out on the material but Bill is just a great instructor!
Bill's the man. Had trouble with series before I took his class and he made it feel fun for me. Very clear, concise, and able to convey the cool things that math can do. Highly recommend him, just because he makes you want to go to class.
Professor Bill is the absolute Best. The grading is not entirely his fault.
Bill is a great professor. I recommend him to all students. Math has always been my weakest subject but after taking a course with Bill, I enjoy it now. He makes the material easy to understand and does a bunch of practice problems that are very similar to the ones on the exams. Just attend class, do webassign, and do the practice problems.
If you taking this course in the summer, bear in mind that it's not an easy course. However, doable if you work hard. To be fair all classes in the summer are fast paced and maybe overwhelming. If you do what he asks you to do you will truly enjoy the journey with him.
Hands down the best professor in his field. It was very rare that I had any questions because he was able to explain the material in such a clear and concise manner. I HIGHLY recommend him for any math course.
His teaching skill is good, however he teachs how, not why. You can know how to do the question and pass the exam, but you don't really see the whole picture. Besides, he only teachs about 1 hour out of 1.5 and doesn't have certain office hour. I don't recommend his class if you want to learn math in a more theoretic way.
There are no words good enough to describe this man. He is heaven sent. Math being my worst subject, I was intimidated of calculus, but Bill made me not only understand it, he made me LOVE it! His knowledge and passion for math is obvious. Not to mention that Bill is hysterical - you will never enjoy math more! LOVED HIM!
Bill is a great professor who is very clear and concise. He keeps the class interesting with personal stories and jokes. However, grading on tests is done entirely by TA's and is atrocious.
I struggled a lot with math my freshman year, and I'd say it's thanks to Bill that I have it all together again. He is very clear, and does not assume students know things -- he appreciates silly questions because he views them as a learning opportunity. Thanks to him, I'm a lot more confident in my ability to do math, and am an AMS minor now. :)
The greatest part about Bill is that he explains everything, he does not assume you know things already. I took regular pre-calc in high school and then tested into this class. I thought it was going to be really tough, but with Bill it was manageable.
Crystal Clear lectures. Comfortable for me to ask questions and really wants his students to understand the material. Helps you anyway he can. Attendance is not mandatory but is obviously recommended if you want to learn the material correctly.
Amazing teacher, funny, but beware that his class isn't Echoed. He also writes on the whiteboard instead of using the projector etc. Genuinely tries to get you to understand what he's teaching. You only use the textbook for practice work, I personally haven't used it since the first three weeks. Class average is high, beware.
Bill is a great professor. Most people seem to not understand math well but he will take his time and go over anything and everything in the class. if you have a question he will answer it clearly. He also keeps you engaged for the entire class. I'd take him again in a heart beat if he taught MAT 132.
He's a really good teacher, but he tends to be a little bit slow while explaining. His tests are not tough at all, they're really similar to the review exams. He has a geeky sense of humor, which i really enjoy.
This man is amazing! He makes learning calc 2 amazing whether or not you took it in high school. The way he explains the different concepts is very helpful and clear. He has an amazing sense of humor and truly knows how to teach a large lecture. I give him lots of credit for running a middle school and still being able to make it to campus on time.
Took him last semester for mat125. He's the reason why I stayed in 125 rather than move up to 131, which was my level. I liked him and learned SO much from him that I decided to stay. He's funny, intelligent, and cares for his students. Rarely have I met a student who dislikes him. If you have a choice, take him. Especially if you're bad at math.
Easily the best math professor you'll have at Stony Brook. It seems like he enjoys teaching and has fun teaching.
Even if you've taken Calc before, go to class! He is very enlightening, and teaches new methods that you may have never been taught. If you don't go to class you may fall behind, but attendance is not taken and you are not required to attend. Textbook is used often but free online versions are available. Do NOT buy from bookstore.
Although I love math, he increased my passion for math exponentially. He literally explains the history as well as the concept. Truly an amazing professor.
He actually cares if you learn the material, clearly loves teaching, and gives practice midterms that really help for the actual midterms. Except that final. You really need to study for that. Only drawback is that he doesn't use the echo system and uses the whiteboard not the projector. Awesome teacher, would love if he taught AMS 261
Bill's lectures are great and you are missing out if you're cutting class. I don't know if this usually the case (Fall 2014), half of the materials were included in the AB calc, so if you took AB, this class shouldn't be hard for you. His test can be tricky so prepare for it.
Don't like calculus? That's okay he makes it bearable. I loved his class! He went over all possible questions and explained everything thoroughly. He makes you want to participate so definitely speak up! Calc is not easy so someone else is struggling too! Must take!!!
Prof. Barnyard is the only professor I've had that actually made calc bearable. He explains well, loves answering questions, and knows how students think and forms his lectures around this. The homework isn't easy, it actually kinda sucked for me but I'm really bad at calc. However, he's fun and a good prof, take his class if possible.
Best professor I've ever had. He makes lectures interesting and the content clear. He is humorous at times so the class isn't as boring as other math classes. The tests are very fair but you will need to study and pay attention in lecture if you want to get an A for the course.
Literally the best professor I have had on campus thus far, love his teaching style, you can really tell that he cares about the students in the class and his tests are really reasonable. Just go to class and listen (how could you not he is so good at keeping your attention) and you will get an A easy.
Bill is a great guy, had a great semester with him. It isn't an easy a but he's definitely your best option. some hw is challenging, and he made the first two exams very doable but the final was impossible!!! that isnt the same for every exam though
One of the very few professors that actually TEACHES. You learn in class and don't have to open up the textbook even once. His exams are perfectible but that finals was insane. Sit in the front and listen in class and you should do well.
I would recommend Professor Bernhard to anyone weather you're struggling with math or gifted in it. He does the best job I've seen of keeping math interesting for those who enjoy it as well as those who don't. I had taken calc 2 one before him but dropped it because of poor grades. He really helped me understand the subject and pass the class.
Bill is the best math teacher I've ever met. Don't miss his class! If you are waiting for an interesting math class! TAKE HIS CLASS!!
OMG! Bill! He's such a good professor. He's chill af and makes calculus bearable. He cracks jokes and gives plenty of examples in class. The paper homework is optional but it'll help you on tests. He doesn't rush the material and will end class early if there's not enough time to explain the next topic. High recommended and would take again!
He's so sweet! Also is the principal of a middle school. He makes math easy to understand. He will show you how to do all the problems, but tests are few, and there are only 5 questions. You need to study and can't get by on lecture alone. He's so helpful, and cares if you are having problems. He'll also pause for questions.
Bill is amazing! I took Calc BC in high school and really struggled with it and hated it. But Bill made learning calculus fun-he is hilarious and shows passion toward the subject. He makes sure that everyone understands the material and clearly explains everything in detail, even in a large lecture. You will not regret taking this course.
GREAT GREAT PROFESSOR. I took Calc AB as a senior in hs, and if you were able to get a 5 in AB, getting an A in this class should be around the same effort. If you want to study for the exams, just look over the lecture notes and Textbook questions; all samples from both of those come from the professor himself. Really funny, and great professor.
3 exams, 1 is optional. Takes into consideration if you improved through the 3 exams. Straight forward, good sense of humor, curves the final grade, and everything you need for the class is free. Definitely try to get him. Class is late but it's worth it.
Bill is a great professor and his personality makes the class so fun. I enjoy math to begin with but Bill made it even better.
Bill is fantastic. I wish every math class I take could be with him. He is funny, and he is good at explaining things in ways that you can understand. His class wasn't easy, but the expectations were pretty clear, and he made practice tests and other ways to study readily available. If you're going to take MAT125, take it with Bill.
The attendance is not mandatory but you just can't miss Bill's class. The way he teaches is life which "behooves"(his favorite word) you to attend every lecture. Exams are not quite difficult. The final was a joke. But the web work was tough but it will prepare you for any challenging question on the final. Looking for AMS161.... Go for Bill!!!
He'll get to know you better if you participate in class so sit in the front and ask questions. Textbook wasn't so necessary to read as long as you understand the concepts he's discussing in class.
He is a great and hilarious teacher. He can explain all the concept very clear and easy and in the fun way. Take his class! You won't under any pressure. You can learn a lot. Sometimes, i can see people from different section in the class because he is REALLY GOOD teacher.
Makes math entertaining, fully explains but works at a fast pace. If you only took AB Calc andor aren't so great at math like me you'll have to play a lot of catch up. Friendly, reasonable - was supposed to get a B- but he saw improvement so he gave me an A- , don't let his charisma trick you, his tests are fairly difficult and there are curveballs
Best math teacher ever. I hope he will teach other courses but he did not. Go to class, take some notes and you will get an A. do not buy the expensive textbook. you don't need it if you really go to lectures.
One of the best professors I've ever had! Very chill and can explain the topics extremely well. Very reasonable, willing to give extensions for webwork when he found out it crashed right before the assignment was due. Also willing to de-emphasize midterms if you do extremely well on the final. Take his class it's worth it:)
He's very helpful. Funny guy too. Lectures are key to doing well in his class. Don't need textbook if you take notes and pay attention to his lectures. However his webwork can be a pain.
I had not taken a math class in 1.5 years until AMS 161 with Bernhard. The first test was tough for me because there was material that normal math students knew. However, when we started series, that was level playing ground. If you attend office hours, look at youtube videos for series (patrickjmt), and learn basic trig concepts, you will get an A
Bbernmath is literally the best math teacher i have ever had in my entire life. He was my first math teacher at Stony Brook and he made my fall semester great. He tries, and succeeds, to make the class relatable to students. He gives good advice and good reviews. 10 out of 10, would and have recommended. Love that man.
His lectures are clear and he covers all aspect of a concept so you'll leave lecture knowing all the Do's and don't's. He gives you problems and teaches the concepts as he goes instead of throwing definitions and expecting you to understand what it means. Take this professor for first time Calc students. Take notes, go to lecture you'll do well.
Best math teacher in my whole life! love him, funny and helpful
he makes learning fun and understanble. Just pay attention in class, do homeworks ( which are very easy) and you should be set for an A or about that. Quizzes are like a bonus as long as you pay attention.
Bernhard makes you want to go to lecture. A true teacher who cares about how his students are doing and really knows how to relate to the class. Very enjoyable and helpful.
Great professor, however he doesn't give much in the way of outside of class material, and the textbook is pretty useless. If you go to lecture however, you'll do fine.
Bernhard was a great professor for AMS 161. Taught the concepts in a way that even people who aren't good at math got the point of the lectures. Was willing to count the second midterm twice, which meant many of us didn't have to take a final if we did good. Overall, his class was much easier than the MAT 132 equivalent. Awesome guy!
Great professor, really down to earth and entertaining. Your work is cut out for you in the syllabus. Dont buy the book, you can find it online easily (check sbu reddit). Homework, which is once a week, is easy credit (you have multiple attempts to get it right) and final is optional.
Great professor, funny and entertaining guy. Wish I could have him for all of my other math classes.
The best.
Prof. B. rewards high-scoring students by exempting them from the final. He gives lower-scoring students additional chances by shifting the weight of each exam in your favor if you show improvement over time. The lectures are funny, almost always end early, and he basically gives most of the test to you beforehand.
The GOAT
Go to lectures because he's a great teacher and super funny! Material is pretty easy and tests are similar to review sheet.
Teaches very clearly and is extremely funny. Says midterms tend to be similar to the practice exams but with different numbers, but don't trust him; it's more different than similar except for the competency test. Looks like Riff Raff's brother.
Did not make the concepts clear enough and his style of teaching is confusing.
He is too busy trying to be a stand up comedian instead of teaching material. The whole semester he wrote with an invisible marker and wrote so small you couldn't see from third row. Final and midterms are on average on 5 QUESTIONS, get one wrong and there goes your GPA
Calculus sucks lets face it but Professor Bernhard made it somewhat enjoyable. I took calculus with him over the summer and it was the best decision I made. He gives 10 homework assignments all of which take under an hour to do. He also allows us to design the test. He made it as easy as he could and explained everything slowly to ensure we got it.
One the greatest teacher's I've had. He's clear with his thoughts and you'd always get out of class with something new. He jokes once in a while which makes his lectures enjoyable. I extremely recommend him to everyone!
BBern is amazing. Great Math teacher. Really makes you understand the material. The tests are similar to practice tests but watch out, sometimes he grades very harsh and gives little partial credit. Go to lecture, take good notes and you will do well. Hope I get him next semester for Calc B...
Amazing professor... Best teacher I ever had.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He teaches so well and is so funny throughout his lectures. He tells cute stories about himself and his past experiences that are hilarious and explains the material in a simple and organized matter.
Bernhard is the greatest Calculus professor you will find at SBU. He teaches some of the hardest topics in a fashion that makes it easy for students who were not comfortable in Calculus I to understand. You are better off going to lecture than using online resources. Beware that the final is 40% of the grade, you can RUIN your semester in 1 test!
Professor Bernhard is one of the funniest teachers I've ever had, and at the same time he makes Calculus II easy to understand and even fun. The class is graded only on tests and the online weekly homework, which is really easy to get done, so make sure you prepare for tests. He is accessible for questions after class and is willing to reexplain.
He makes a lot of joke. But the grading system is laid out but its still kind of unclear. Get 100% on webassign, try to get a 80 and above in the first two midterms and study hard for the final part 1 and you should be at B level if you do poorly on the final part 2. go to class unless you understand the material.
Great professor, truly teaches the material, gives similar practice tests.
Bill is the greatest math professor to ever grace Stony Brook University. I don't think I've ever met anyone who can teach math as well as he can. If he's available, take him.
Need I say more? It behooves you to take the legendary BBern again and again.
One of the funniest and best professors you will ever have, can make a 7pm lecture enjoyable. Always willing to answer questions and has review sessions before exams which are very similar to actual exams. A must-take for any class
He is by far my favorite Math professor and an absolute favorite professor at Stony Brook. His lectures will behoove you so you wouldn't even want to miss a class. The class is not hard if you focus on the lecture. The tests are the exact same format as the practice tests. As said before, he holds review sessions before all his tests. Love him!
Great professor who explains things easily.
Great professor. He's very clear and funny. His tests are very fair and similar to the practice exams!
I wouldnt have gotten an A if he wasnt my teacher. I missed classes here and there but he does a good job with notes so get those from a friend and you will be fine. The key to an A is taking his practice tests seriously. They are literally the SAME as the real test, but obviously with different numbers, etc. But exactly concepts and format.
He is the only professor that has me excited to go to class. If you can have him, you should take that opportunity. Makes learning fun like no teacher I've ever had before.
I love Bill so much. The best professor ever. He explains every little thing in math which helps in understanding better. He always ends lecture early but he gives you all the information necessary to pass his tests. His lectures are also fun because he is hilarious. Homework is due every Sunday and his tests are fair, he practically tells the test
Best lectures ever
The best math professor I've ever had. I am not a math person and it would be enough for me to study the night before the exam to get above a 90 on the test. Tests are so similar to the practice test he gives but a bit harder so you need to practice. Make sure you go to his reviews before the test.
Amazing professor. Really works hard for you to understand the content of the course. Hilarious btw. LOVE HIM. Also, a lot of homework on my math lab so do well on those, since they count.
Amazing
Best professor
Breaks down all concepts into very digestible material. 10/10 fantastic professor.
Calculus II was definitely where many students began to learn the difference between high school mathematics and college calculus, but Bill made the class more than bearable. His enthusiastic demeanor resonated with the class and evoked lots of participation (not mandatory). He does explain topics fairly well and is very efficient with his lectures
Amazing professor, he doesn't overwhelm you with material and content during his lectures. They're condensed and get straight to the point. To study, just keep doing previous exams. Also, your grade is pretty much dependent on improvement throughout the course. If you can, take him!!!
Just take him. Trust me, you will not regret it!
Bill is great! I took him in the summer and he is very thorough with the material he teaches. He is so understanding and funny so you don't get bored with all the math. He makes sure you understand the material before the exams and will review all the questions the class before. Very inspirational and an amazing professor!!
One of the best mathematics professors I have had so far!
Great Lectures. He does not follow the order prescribed by the textbook, but by going in a different order, he showed the true beauty in math. Wonderfull adjunct.
Bill is literally the best. He makes math seem super seamless and easy to understand. If you aren't super great with math, you might need to do some reviewing outside of class but if you take good notes you should be fine. He basically gave the final to us. Used questions with similar wording to the review, just different numbers. Best math class
Prof Bernhard, or as he likes to be called Bill, is a very well respected caring professor. He is very good at explaining things from the very bottom so you can go into calc with no knowledge of it and come out of that class feeling like you really learned a lot. He is also funny in his lectures and makes his class very enjoyable.
I mean I just didn't like the class overall bc I took it so late at night but he's really good as a professor.
I love this man, he makes his late night classes amazing. I love the way he teaches and his very easygoing personality. His lectures are like performances, they're always amazing and breathtaking. I highly recommend him if you need Calc 2.
Professor Bernhard was my favorite so far! Gives amazing lectures and keeps everyone engaged. He is such a funny person so lectures don't drag on and ever feel boring. His teaching style is amazing and you will learn as long as you listen. The homeworks are helpful. His tests are a little hard but if you practice previous problems, you will be good
This teacher knows how to make lectures easy to pay attention to. However, I think your recitation teachers are just as important, if not more, if you want to pass. He also drops the lowest test grade, which personally helped me out a lot.
This might be quite possibly the best professor from Stony Brook. He takes one of the stupidest math classes and makes it easily understandable. The curve for this class is absolutely massive and his pre-exam reviews are the same questions as the exams with different numbers. Also his lectures are the only ones I would go out of my own free will.
I took Bill as my math teacher and he's the greatest. His lectures go through each point that you need to know for the tests and he makes calc easy. The homework wasn't hard either and the midterms and finals were all part of the lectures. Make sure you understand the material, go to office hours, talk to him after class, and you'll do great.
There are 2 midterms and biweekly hws, so make sure to do them all. The course is easy but it would be loads better if we didn't have to teach ourselves. This professor is extremely disorganized and rude. There is no generous curve when it comes to grading and he is not willing to help or make exceptions for anyone. Never understood the hype.
Bill is a great prof to take for AMS161. His lectures are 3 hours long, but you learn a lot and he goes through a lot of examples. He has online HW due every 2 weeks which isn't too bad but you should start them early. He gives practice midterm/finals but they're pretty similar to the actual tests.
Bbern makes lectures entertaining and fun to sit through. Very knowledgeable in calculus, however there is only one lecture per week and biweekly homework assignments with two exams counting for 80% of your grade. If you don't refresh yourself on the topics, you're not going to have a good time. He does his best to ensure everyone understands.
Professor Bernhard was the best math teacher I have ever had. His humor, attitude, and overall outlook on mathematics was something I've never seen from anyone else. He truly is a gem of a person and a teacher and you can't go wrong taking a math class with him.
Bbern is the best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures are very easy to understand, and he will go over things again if you ask him to. His tests are pretty fair since the practice ones he gives out are very similar. Recitation was mandatory so make sure to go to those for credit. I'm taking AMS161 next semester only because he's teaching it.
Bbern was quite lenient in his grading and structured his midterms and finals the way he did in his practice exams and very lenient through the process of online class. He behooves us to attend lectures so he doesn't record them but overall great professor, personality, and leniency. Hopefully lightsaber makes to the physical lecture halls soon :)
If you want to get your money back on your education--don't take his class. His lectures tend to be way easier than other professors. Yes, it can be quite nice since it will give you an easy A. But in the long run, as you advance to upper-division math classes, you wouldn't be able to compete with your peers because he didn't teach in-depth enough.
Bernhard (nicknamed Bbern) has an amazing personality and his lectures are never boring. That being said, his grading system is pretty heavy. HW is 20%, and the other 80% is a midterm and a final, each being 40%. Most people did bad on the midterm, so he allowed the final to be the entire 80%. The HW was light and he explained things well.
calc 2 is a hard class, do homework and the test review
Professor Barnyard is the best out there
Bbern is leagues better then any math professor at SBU
I took this class in the winter because I failed Mat 131 but taking this class with BBern really made me like math.
this prof literally made me actually like math and become a math major. i hated math before taking this class but he actually makes it enjoyable and he actually cares about us understanding the material. goated professor. if you need to take calc for credits take this professor
BBERN YOUR A LITERAL GOD! BEST PROF I EVER HAD!
An absolute goat.
Professor Bbern was my first maths professor. His lectures are much likely like a movie that explains things clearly. He answers every question as many times as you want and helps students to get things clear very easily. I wish to have more maths classes with you!!!!!
Professor Bernhard is a funny guy. All his lectures are enjoyable.
Warning: if you take Bberns class, every other math teacher you ever had and will have will look bad. I went in dreading calc 2 because of Zoom but that means nothing for this class. He makes you genuinely love math and understand the what, why and how behind every concept he teaches. Will answer every question with care. Truly transcendent.
prof bbern was the best i have had and he made the lectures fun which is never the case with any other class. He is clear of any instructor in his department. definitely take him
great Professor, reads the room very well and keeps students engaged. Possible to get an A as long as you study his practice tests.
It might be tough if you don't pay attention in lectures but he has review sessions for tests that make ot pretty easy if you don't.
he is literally the best math professor I've ever had! I was in MAT131 and i got a 66 on the first midterm before deciding to drop down. i'm very happy that I chose him- his class is fun and he can end class half an hour early with everyone understanding the content well. his review sessions are amazing and he helped me score 100 on midterm 2!
He's an incredible lecturer, it's easy to succeed in his class if you go to lecture and listen. He teaches every concept well and he makes jokes in lecture so it's not all boring math.
Professor BBern was definitely the best professor I have had at Stony Brook so far. His lectures are amazing and he really goes in depth with his examples. He is an extremely funny and caring professor and I am definitely going to miss him as my professor.
Really amazing lecturer. My biggest complaint is that lectures aren't recorded which means you can only study based off your notes. Luckily if you search up "AMS 161" on YouTube you can find some recordings.
Prof. Bernhard is honestly the best professor ever! My previous calc prof was so awful that I didn't even understand anything. However, Prof. Bernhard makes learning calc so easy. He teaches what will be on the exam and clearly states what is expected for the course. His tests are very fair. I would highly recommend his class! He is a 11/10!
Bberns was the best professor I had at Stony. He helped explain everything well and answered every question we had. He made the class fun for everyone. He was funny and very knowledgeable.
Midterm and Final are very similar to his practice exam, very easy and there is about 8 homework per semester. Overall great professor.
Best teacher. Teaches once a week and manages to only use half his 3 hour class time but really teaches the information so you're ready for the hw. Midterm and final is practically given to you during his review sessions. An easy A and you really learn the material.
absolute goat
this guy is just goated if i ever meet him in person i wanna buy him a meal
Genuinely a good professor. Took him for AMS 151 (and eventually online AMS 161), very efficient and great at teaching new concepts over a short time. Note: AFAIK, most of his lectures are "3 hours", but he'll be done in half of that and then answer any questions you have. Further reason to give him GOAT status as a prof.
Great professor that makes you actually enjoy attending class. Plenty of attempts on homeworks. Exams basically the same as the reviews he does. As long as you attend his lectures you'll do fine. Worst case just make it to his review lectures because he re teaches the problems you'll see on the test. Love bbern hes the best.
BBern has basically everything you'd want in a professor. He teaches very well, is funny, and is understanding of students and their needs. Lectures are scheduled for 3 hours but he usually only uses about half of that, and still manages to make calc 2 easy and even kind of enjoyable. He's a great professor and a great person as well.
I took MAP 101, which is algebra and arithmetics. I liked this professor a lot. I'm not good at math but he made learning and understanding math very easy. I would 100% recommend him especially if math is difficult for you. He broke it down more when you didn't understand. He's funny, nice, and overall a good math teacher. Would take him again.
Best math professor!!! Easy A if you do the required practice before exams and homeworks.
Partial credit on the exams. Could get final answer wrong, but get majority credit. Lectures are clear and easy to understand. Exams are not difficult provided you spent 2-3 hours reviewing material a few days before.
The best professor ever, he's just so kind and patient. He's so good at teaching calculus as well, which is super hard to do. Being in his class was like a breath of fresh air. Please take him!!!!!!
Great at teaching and always answers any questions you have. Lectures always ended early. He teaches the material that are on the exams and does a review for each of them. There was like 5-6 homework assignments that were pretty easy and you had a week to do them. I never really liked math, but he made it enjoyable.
Best professor I've ever had in college. Asked us to call him "B-Burns" on the first day. I took the lectures that were once a week for three hours and he let dismissed us early all the time. If you're not good at math like me, try not to miss his lectures because he does exam reviews. Overall easy class and had a fun time listening to his lectures
A professor that truly cares about his students. He explains things very well in his lectures and takes time helping his students understand the material. 100% recommend taking him.
This might be one of the best professors I've ever had. He really enjoys teaching this class and it makes the class so much easier. The only thing your graded on is 4 exams. Prof will review exactly everything that is on the test a head of time.
He's so great and nice and soooo amazing at teaching!! If I could, I would take him for every math course in the future. He explains things in a great way, his tests and homework are fair, and the way he goes about teaching the course is very student sensitive. He cares a lot!
In his lecture, you will never feel a chaotic movement from topic to topic. Each narrative flows smoothly into another, and as an idea or an explicable theorem develops, it will certainly answer any question.
Great lectures that made everything perfect to understand. I rarely left confused. He teaches by example. Tests are like the examples in class. The problem is we did not cover enough. The class felt more like Calculus 1.5 than Calculus 2. We did not learn most of the syllabus (did about 50% of it). We did not do trig sub, part frac, and much more.
He's amazing fr. Made me understand and like calc 2. Study his review sheets heavily because its very similar to the test. The only thing I would say is that the tests weigh extremely heavy in his class. Like this semester all 3 tests weighed 80% combined. Because of this, one bad grade could potentially put you a grade letter below.
Professor Bernhard is a godsend - made calc 2 actually enjoyable. His lectures are super clear, and review sheets are spot-on for tests. Definitely use unstuckstudy ai and attend every class for the best chance at an A.
Bbern is fantastic. The class was easy to understand even though it was Synchronous online. He's very fair, and I'm taking him again for AMS 161 next semester. I highly recommend, also the exams are exactly like the reviews, and the content isn't too hard.
He clearly cares about his students, he repeats problems step by step if anyone is confused, he gives you the layout for the class weeks in advance. Don't feel turned off by the 3 hour long classes. He's always ended it no later than 2 hours. I'm not that big of a math person but the way he teaches makes calculus 2 feel really easy.
Awesome teacher! He's very patient and he explains really well. He always lets you out early and doesn't waste time teaching what he needs to teach. His test are very straight forward and aligned with the teachings. 10/10
I could worship this man. I just get emotional when I think about him like he's amazing. Like truly amazing amazing amazing just do his class you will NOT regret it.
I actually really enjoyed taking his class, best professor ever! He'll always stop to explain if you don't understand anything during his lectures. He gets straight to the point and always ends class early. Would choose to have him again if I was able to!!
He's a great teacher. He's good at keeping the class engaging and breaks down problems to make them easier to understand. The class is very test heavy with tests making up 90% of your grade, but if you attend the review sessions (there will always be one a week before an exam) the questions he goes over will be very similar to those on the exam.
Professor Bernhard is great. However, one con about his class is that the final is literally half your grade, not to mention how brutal the TA graded on the final. He took off all of the points for one question, even though I made one small mistake, and gave me no partial credit. Like um...?
His lectures are THE BEST. I can not express how much I love this professor. Absolutely take AMS 161 over MAT 132.
He's very nice, and I can see why so many people love him, but he's overrated. He started the class with power and geometric series, which was extremely confusing, and I feel like when he started rambling on about series and stuff I was just so lost on how to do them but that could be my dumb brain not sure.
If he could be my professor for every math course I take I would pick him. He is the best and is very understanding and knows how to break and explain the math well. There was weekly homework and I did have to purchase the textbook to have access to the homework online, but this was my favorite class my fall semester.
His lectures are easy to follow, the homework is relatively simple, and exams are basically the same as what he presented in his reviews. However, I feel that he often glazes over specific information, and instead opts to just give the general idea. Thus, you might not get as much as an in depth and detailed learning from this class.
He knows what he is doing, and genuinely wants to see his students succeed. 10/10 recommend him, especially if you're going into a math-heavy field like engineering.
The best possible math professor at stony PLEASE take him whenever you get the chance he gives homework every week and makes the lectures interesting. definitely made me consider taking calc 3 if he taught it but he doesn't :( and I don't even need to take it. But anyways please take ams 151 or 161 with bbern he is the goat of math professors
yo lol this guy low key goated he should get an award or something like that
This professor is amazing!! Very enthusiastic about his teaching and breaks down problems. You will grasp information quickly!!
B Bern is the goat. Hands down best math teacher ever.
BBern is genuinely one of the easiest calculus professors you can take compared to literally any others. His lectures are less than an hour long each, his homework is straightforward, the midterm is exactly like the practice, and you don't really need to spend too much time for his class. He's also stupidly funny and everyone loves him for that.
His teaching style is very helpful because he includes the class, gets straight to the point, and wrapped class early every time. He also understands students' needs and adjusts to them. He goes over every topic and explains every single step and taught us everything we need to know (tips and tricks too).
nicest calc professor, one time i didn't do one of the hw assignments and when i emailed him he said it's chill and i didnt have to do it, he is a blessing to Stony Brook.
Explains concepts very clearly, practice questions pretty much match what is covered on the exams. Exams are worth 80% of the final grade.
