Birkhill is the best college professor you can have. Not only is the guy very intelligent, he's fair and lets you know exactly what is expected of you. You will write your hand off, but his examples are hilarious and you'll never be bored. A must take!

He loves to talk and write a novel on the board... if you take a 6-9pm class, dont expect to ever leave before like 9:15pm! If you like long classes with lots of notes to take, this is your prof! if not, stay away!

he really wants questions if you are not underatanding something. a very thorough prof. who cares about the health of his students. i recommend him to anyone who needs and elective or likes psyc.

Prof Birkhill is the best, he is clear about the material and very helpful if you dont understand somthing. A lot of note taking and no leaving class early! He is one of the best Profs at UM-D! The test are all multiple choice and he tells you in lecture all you need to know. Take Him hes worth it.

I really thought this class would be interesting, but honestly this guy BORED me to death. His class is SO boring. You take notes for the whole class period. WHO STILL USES THE BLACK BOARD? AND HIS EARASER, oh lord. His exams were annoying because its based on the book and we took 90 pages of notes

Great teacher!The guy who said that 90% of the stuff is from the book must have been sleeping. All you have to do is go to class and take the notes he writes on the board and you will pass with ease. The bad part is expect to write for the whole class period and stay the whole time. Great stories!!

Really nice guy, but be ready to take endless notes. Seriously youyr hand will suffer but ya know, its an easy class jsut read offhe notes and skim the book. You will be set, very fair exams and grading and just an overall great guy.

Very fun, interesting, clear and straight forward. Keeps your interest the whole class time (he uses it all and goes over sometimes) writes down all the facts needed for the tests. Very very funny guy who knows his stuff. Love him!

Easy class - attend class regularly, take the notes, don't bother buying the book - tests are word for word from the notes, very entertaining professor, i would highly recommend him!

A little tough, because of the wording of the questions on the test. He gives you answers to many of the questions. Dont' buy the book, study the notes REALLY well, and take the online quizzes from the book's site. Enjoy his stories!

Prof. Birkhill is one of the best Psych professors at UM-D...if you get the chance to take him, do it. He's very clear, his tests are easy, and he keeps the class entertaining. The only problems I had with the class were that he writes insanely fast (your arm will be on fire by the end!) and he always keeps you to the very end of class. Take him!

Dr. Birkhill is the most kindhearted individual and it shows in his teaching and entire attitude toward life. He devotes so much time and energy to psychology. He'll tell you straight forward that "this stuff turns me on" and he's not lying. He utilizes every last second of class time. I would recommend him a hundred times over.

He made a long evening class session fun. Some people don't like taking that many notes or are freaked out by him, but I say he's a great instructor and a good person. If you know your notes REALLY well, you'll get an A. I tried reading the book but found that I could get an A on his exams without reading.What's cool-no papers in his class!!! :)

This guy is long winded... don't expect to get out early of his 3 hour classes.. he'll keep you extra long. He is a little nutsy too, but I learned a lot... so can't complain too much.

Dr. Birkhill is a crazy man. You will not get out of class early and you will not be able to pass his tests without taking notes. Oh and on the subject of notes, I recommend a laptop. You do not want to be writing for three hours at the speed he writes. You will need a new hand before mid semester. Tests are from his notes!

Quite possibly the greatest teacher Psyc teacher ever. Go to class, take three hours of notes, read the notes and ACE his three exams. Its pretty simple. 80 to 90 question exams, 95% of which are from his notes. His notes are in fact exam questions. Notes are a must and the class is three exams and that it.Take Bill Birkhill is you have the chance.

It's all been said: your grade is based on 3 verbatim exams and an optional paper. He writes everything you need on the board (and it is alot); write it down, study it and you will do fine. The class was very interesting and he is a great, entertaining prof. I DID NOT buy the textbook or even look at it once and i still recieved an A+ in the class.

This is the best professor I had in my life!! He summarizes all the important stuff from the book and writes them on the board with his own hand!! Just study the notes really good and you'll get an A+ in all of his classes. 99% of the test questions come from the notes!! There are no papers required at all. Oh and he tells the funniest stories ever!

This professor will keep you for the entire 3+ hours of class but will give you 80% of the test material through his notes, which he writes word for word on the board. Seems like he is using the book more this semester so your going to have to buy it. Overall, a great professor with many interesting stories as examples.

Birkhill's class is very straight forward. He writes on the board for three hours and his exams are about 80 percent from the notes. Attendence is not mandatory, but is good for some extra credit. Just three exams and a optional paper. Enjoy

He is halarious. Great teacher and full of energy. One of the best psych teachers, equal with prof. Sheldon. Exams aren't bad, goto class, take notes, study them and your golden. However he does incorperate text book terms not gone over in class. Lectures are long but very interseting and he uses very strange but memorable exmaples.

Hilarious, easy, full of energy. You take notes for 3 hours, and if you study them, you'll ace the exams easily. Gives extra points for attendance. Has crazy stories (you'll never forget the material if you listen to the stories). Take him!

Dr. Birkhill is awesome, fun and entertaining. He knows the material well and makes you understand it with his teaching method of using examples. I will definately take another of his classes if I need one.

Great teacher and willing to help boost your grade as long as you are willing to put the work in. Putting a little effort into studying makes the exams simple and he offers easy bonus points. I don't recommend skipping any of his classes as his notes are the only way to get at least a B in his class. Would take again if I was a psych major.

Great professor, not too easy but definitely not too hard. He made sure to write everything out on the chalkboard and helped us practice for each test. He made the final project "optional". The only down-point is that he always takes the entire class, you'll never get out early, but he doesn't waste time. I would definitely take him again.

He is a great professor. He keeps the class interesting with good stories. His tests are pretty easy if you just study the notes. He usually will only put one or two questions from the book on the test. The only downside is that you never get out early, but he keeps the class interesting so that doesn't really matter.

If you don't like sitting through 3 hour long lectures then I wouldn't suggest taking him, but he is really funny, interesting, and spirited in what he teaches and I would definitely recommend him. He is my favorite teacher and his tests are straight from the notes. He doesn't try to trick you, he really wants his students to do well.

AMAZING PROFESSOR! He definitely keeps you entertained during class, he makes funny jokes and he really knows his psychology. Overall, he's just a really nice guy. Very fun to talk to in and outside of class. Probably one of the best professors at UMD, I would reccommend him to anyone.

I liked his class a lot you should go to class, he writes everything on the board but not a bad thing because his notes are basically the test but you do need to study the material. Only bad point is he takes the whole time in his 3 hour class you will not get out early but at least you won't fall asleep

He's extremely knowledgeable about what he teaches. Having been a practicing psychologist, he brings stories from past cases into the lectures. Believe me you'll never forget the stories since they're so funny. 3 hours of note taking but his test are from the notes so I do recommend attending class and using a laptop. I HIGHLY recommend him :)

Not a bad class. Lots of sitting and note-taking, but he's pretty funny and the tests aren't bad. He knows the stuff really well and he tries his hardest to keep the lectures interesting. The only homework is a departmental requirement that you do a couple of experiments. Not much bad stuff to be said about him.

Had him for a 3 hour class, and he used all 3 hours. That's the only negative I can come up with. The man is very funny, sometimes unintentionally, and has examples for almost every topic discussed. Tests come almost directly from his notes so write down what he writes on the board and you'll do great. Highly recommended

Interesting guy who has a lot of quirks but overall class is straightforward and tests are multiple choice based almost exclusively on lecture. He makes sure to utilize every second of allotted class time, so don't ever expect to get out early. Textbook completely unnecessary.

Read his ratings before I took the class and they all were right. He's a great professor and funny. He writes very detailed notes on the board and keeps you till the last minute of the 3hrs. Most straight forward teacher at U of M. What he writes on the board is EXACTLY whats on the test, therefore no need for the book. Stay until the last minute of class because at the end of class before an exam, he reads off a good chunk of the qestions that will be on it. DEFINETLY take him!!! Hes so funny and cute

I can really appreciate his style of teaching, He lets u know what you need to know before each test and has the most amusing stories that relates to subject matter and aids in retaining the information.

Excellent professor. I hope all mine are as fun loving as him. As prior comments read, he is a notes guy. EVERYTHING on the test is from the notes he writes, so be sure to attend every lecture. He makes the material fun with his outrageous stories. He's 5'5 100lbs soaking wet, which adds to his awesome fun teaching style. BIRKHILL RULES

BY FAR THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN. The way he teaches the class is amazing and it will make you love psychology if you don't. His tests should be easy if you just study the notes and he will give some test questions/answers before the day of the test. Overall- I would recommend him to everyone. I wish he taught other subjects!!!!

Oh boy, this guy is hilarious! Although I wouldn't say his class is easy, he makes the subject very interesting. I vividly remember many of the examples he gave, and so will you if you take his class. His examples are what make the material stick! Just go to class, take notes, and study them to do well! He goes over exam the lecture before exam!

This instructor is beyond hilarious. The first couple exams were easy, but they got harder towards the end. TAKE NOTES. About 90% of his material from his exams come from his lecture notes. Also I do not recommend you leave class early because he takes attendance all the time. I highly recommend this instructor.

Birkhill is great! His exams, as you've probably heard, are 90% from his notes, 10% from the book. Don't read the book. Spend that time memorizing the notes and getting 90's on the tests. He curves each exam by 5% so that will make up for any missed book questions. 3 pg paper w credit based on completion. Overall a VERY easy, stress-free class.

Lectures consist of him reading aloud his notes and writing them verbatim on the board . Awful. Find a few friends who type out their notes and just take turns having them email you their notes, no point in showing up. Attendance doesn't really matter. The paper is just basic citation work (relevant topic, 3 pages, 5 sources). 3 exams, pretty long.

You NEED to read the book now or at least skim over it. I memorized all the notes and ended up with an A-. He is adding more book questions to the tests so his class is not as easy as it used to be. 0% chance of getting out of class early and if you skip, make sure to get the notes from someone else.

Professor Burkhill is by far one of the best instructors. He goes over in his lectures very thoroughly what he wants you to know for the test. only three tests and the questions come straight from the lecture notes that you take in class. He is funny and understanding. Attendance is important, one 3 pg paper.

Dr. Birkhill is a strange character, but is passionate about psychology so he'll try to give you a lot of information -- so much so that he'll go over class time. I took him for a 3 hour evening class; don't. I'm sure he'd be much more bearable if the class was two days a week. Overall, he's not a bad professor.

I can't imagine why anyone would give Dr. Birkhill a bad review. He's truly an asset to the university and is one of the most knowledgable professors there. Exams are pretty much the notes. Memorize them and you will pass. The book is not really needed but he says 10% of the exam is from the book. He pretty much teaches you the DSM 5, cool stuff.

Dr. Birkhill is a GREAT professor. He lectures heavy and writes the exam answers on the board. Roughly 10% is from the book but the rest is from what he writes. Study what he writes and you will likely get 90%. He KNOWS his stuff and doesn't back down from complainers who try to argue.

He is an amazing professor. One of my professors took him more than 20 years ago, so that should say something about his experience. You will have to take 3 exams and write a paper; nothing else to be graded. If you hate writing, invest in a laptop because he writes everything. He is NOT a harsh grader. If you study his notes, a "B" is likely.

Writes paragraphs and makes class longer than the actual time. Tests are worded weirdly and can be confusing. He does care and will try to answer your question, though he might not understand it when you ask and go off on a tangent about something else. I would recommend using a laptop to take the notes and read the textbook to make more sense.

Dr. Birkhill is wonderful! But very lecture heavy; you have to go to class, take good lecture notes and skim the chapters of the book. His tests are easy as long as you have these notes. He is very knowledgeable! Sweet man, love to have a class with him again.

USE YOUR LAPTOPS to take notes trust me im saving you some time. He writes everything verbatim so you will do a lot of writing. You do not need the textbook its a waste only 10% questions will be on each exam, but take your educated guess. Also finish the 5 participation points before December, or do the alternate assigments before december too.

This class was a breeze. The hardest part was having to show up at 6 and stay there until 8:45. His lectures may be long, but he explains things VERY well and even throws in some quirky stories relating to the material. There is a textbook, but DO NOT BUY IT. I never read it and got a 47/50 on every exam. everything is in the notes, study them.

For exams like 90% of them are directly from his notes, the rest from the book. You might be able to pull off an A with just his notes but I read the book just in case. Follow the criteria for the essay and you should be fine. You don't have to go to class but you'll need the notes from someone. I really liked him as a prof. Very sweet guy

I took Dr. Birkhill for a few classes. I received an A+ in PSYC 300 and a B+ in PSYC 440. He is extremely hilarious ! His funny examples helped me to remember the concepts. I took notes, remembered it, and applied it to the practical exam-questions. He gives excellent feedback, and he's so nice! A stress-free course. Easy A+

Dr. Birkhill is great! All you have to really do to get an A is listen to the lecture recordings and make sure you at least skim through the chapters. There are 3 tests and they're pretty much exactly from the lecture notes/study guides that he posts. Would definitely recommend him! (This is for PSYCH 101 by the way not 171)

Super easy class. I dont think I spent more than a full day on this class. As if I didn't even take psyc. 3 exams. 92 is an A. 3 research credits (not graded but required). Research is online, fun, like taking a survey, finished in a couple of hours. All the questions are on the internet and can be found in quizlet sets so go ahead and study them.

Psych 101 is a wonderfully straightforward class. He writes lots of notes and you copy them down word for word; he kindly covers exclusively what you need to know to get an A on the exams. The only grades are three exams, so study (flash cards and re-reading notes make memorization easy). Some students here blame Birkhill for their own poor effort.

The class wasn't too bad if you're good with memorization. The lectures are long, but they're worth attending; he writes pretty comprehensive notes on the board, which are really important for the exams. Never puts anything into Canvas, and grades depended on 3 exams and one optional paper.
