If you can stay awake, it is easy
just take lots of notes and u'll do well. i have to agree..he quite intelligent
prof. boyle is very smart. i found comb-over delightful.
his lectures stimulate my mind and his chizzled good looks stimulate my lips .
mind expanding material. tests are all essay/short answer form. A isn't too difficult to attain.
CREEPY FKING GUY BULLET HEAD WITH A COMBOVER HAS A HABIT OF STARING INTO SPACE DURING LECTURES AND A HABIT OF SAYING YOU KNOW THAT SORT OF THING
His Class sucks some major dick. Big Time
The challenge is staying awake....
ZZZZZZZ
If you go to his class everyday and take really good notes you'll get an A. He is very smart intelligent. He does stare off into space alot

Initially, I got the impression that he was very unapproachable--but I was wrong. Dr. Boyle is very fair and intelligent. The material (Metaphysics) is pretty difficult.
The guy is BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.....
This guy is crazy... you have to get used to him. he's kind of boring but as long as you sort of understand what he's saying you'll do fine. weird guy but its funny.
zZzzzZZzzZz..oh i`m sorry professor who? i think i fell asleep through his self introduction.
This guy is the worst professor ever. The only good thing is that u don't have to buy a book but the class is very boring. Test are kinda hard...avoid this yeacher pleassseee!!!
He is the worst professor ever. Drop this class ASAP!!! Unless you are able to stay awake while being bored to death. He is unclear in his explanations and does not answer questions. Not one person got an A on his first test. That says it all.
Good Professor...Knows his stuff n knows how to explain it..test are not that hard as people make it sound...if you take good notes n understand wat he is talking about you will do fine..N also no text book for him.
wow i diddnt stay awake in one class. i even had my boy with me in class and all we did would laugh afterwords on how we both fell asleep! sooooo boring and however if u like squirrls and trees then u will love this class
this class was so boring.. there's no point on going to his class at all. he is so boring and at the end of his sentences he always says "you know that kinda thing" what's that all about? he jump from one topic to another... hello??&
o my god he is so hot but the most boring i think he has no clue what he is talking about.if i had to take his class again i would leave school and become a wal mart worker.so its up to you!!! RUN
Im gonna tell you one thing there are 100 tiles on the sealing.......
he**** me in the boys bathroom, i hate him
if the man wasn't so boring i might have done well but he is just too much and i advise strongly against him.
this might be one of the most boring teachers in history. if u have trouble sleeping and need some rest then maybe this is the class for u. but that is all he is good at doing. hard test ant not clear in his lessons. his class is a narcoleptics dream!
The best professor you can ever find on earth. No papers,no reading,no book, and no final. He gives you the questions to the test beforehand. It's very important to taperecord his lectures.I didnt have to work hard and I got an easy A.Take him.Really good.
HOW DOES HE KEEP HIS JOB
Very boring professor. It is difficult to stay awake during his class. There is no homework and no reading for his class. All you have to do is take notes and memorize them ALLLLL for the test.
Just thinking about this class makes me tired. I dunno, I think everyone summed it up pretty well. Tests are based on notes, so if you take good notes you'll be ok...trouble is it's difficult to take good notes cause you're too busy falling asleep.

This man might as well be exhaling sleeping gas. More boring than Michael Bolton. On exams, put Vaseline on your hand cuz it'll fall off before its over. Also, bring a pillow for your pillow. Don't sit near a window cuz u might get an urge to jump.
Professor Boyle is the best professor i've had. He is a very good teacher and his exams are straight forward. I really enjoyed his class this semester and hope i can take him again next semester. By the way, he is kinda hot too!
Alright guy, class is boring though. I've never fought sleep so hard before. The tests are a bit hard if you don't study from your notes and you better take good ones at that...
The biggest bore in the universe.
BORING. I dreaded every lecture. Easy tests though. You'll space out in his class, just stay alert enough so that you can copy down every word he says and regurgitate all his ideas. You don't learn anything new, but such is the plight of the SJU student.
I thought he was a good professor. No papers, No book, NADA. what you must do is take lots of notes, Try not to fall asleep, study those notes b/c thats all you have to study from, the tests are 5-7 questns and answer as best you can, mostly short answer
the class can seem long sometimes, but he is a very intelligent person and you can learn a lot from him. Write as much as you can on the test-he'd rather have you get halfway through it and be more complete in your answers. Willing to help outside of class
Interesting topics discussed but can be quite soporific. He only gives 2 tests and a final. No other work. Just take good notes and write everything you know for the answers on the tests. Very easy if you study and practically memorize your notes.
His classes are very interesting, he's a very nice man and very helpfull if you need him. I've taken him twice so far and am very happy with the results. It's not so hard to get an A in his class, as long as you know the material. There is not book required and exams are on class notes.
No hwk, no book, just 2 exams and a final. It's an easy class but u have to STAY AWAKE which is VERY difficult. He's a fair grader though. Must memorize everything in your notes for the exams.
omg he's go boring..if u can listen take notes and spit them back out on a test. .then ur golden. this is an easy A for u .. no text book.. no homework.. just listen and try to stay awak e in class don't take tueday,thursday.. try to get MWF no way u can stay focused for 2 hours straight..
MOST BORING AND HARDEST CLASS. HE WEARS THE SAME TIE AND SUIT EVERY DAY!!!! FROM THE START HE ADMITS NO ONE GETS A'S. NO TEXT-MAYBE A BAD IDEA. THE NOTES ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE. WATCH 0UT FOR THE CONVO ON THE CAT AND THE TREE. I STUDIED LIKE CRAZY, ALL FOR A C (PASS/FAIL THIS CLASS) I DID. GOOD LUCK
Professor Boyle is a great professor in his ideas and his way of explaining things....Listen for the Fido the Dog examples. It may be hard to stay awake because he is really monotone but if you can, he is really interesting Take his class as an elective or as an auditor for the class. Willing to help
The only class that I didnt get an A. He is impossible and time stands still in his class. It is more interesting to watch paint dry and I retained absolutely nothing from his class.
Nice guy but not the most exciting. Class is always very quiet. His grading policy is very lenient as long as you study for the tests [one midterm, one final]. That's all. Just a really nice guy.
he's a nice guy and it sounds great when you hear you don't need to buy a textbook for his class but!!! it is hard to stay awake in the class and you NEED to take all the notes down for his tests which is hard if you do not have exactly what he said. His tests are also weird.
He explains things very abstractly and expects for you to just "KNOW" what he's talking about...For the tests, it's strict memorization. You don't learn that way! Then, when you think you did your best, it wasn't because he doesn't give A's. The good thing: no textbook, no homework.
He is so boring. I fell asleep in every class. He's very unclear and his exams are like 15 essays long
It's hard to stay awake in his class but it is not that hard to do well. His lectures are very abstract, so be sure to pay attention and write it exactly as he says it. Just memorize notes for the test and you'll do well. He takes attendence so don't miss class too much. No textbook. Not too bad of a class; I recommend taking him.
talks the whole time, listen, take notes, ask questions if you don't understand cause he gives good explanations, write a lot of notes and you should be alright
People might say he is tough, but if you are good at note-taking, then it is an easy A. Just understand the notes and this class would be a breeze.
horrible. totally notes, strict on attendance...no book, no clarifications. Only 3 tests, but you never get any of them back to learn what you did wrong. how could you then possibly know what you were doing wrong? DONT TAKE HIM
Listen to these people! Go to class(hes big on attendance), take IN DEPTH notes, his tests are all essay based on exactly what he says. He's a nice guy and knows a lot about philosophy. he makes great points and is very insightful. Just take notes and study them and youll do fine.
OMG! So boring @ 7:35 in the morning, by 8:15 I was sleeping. RUN THE OTHER WAY!
he is so boring; bring coffee, drink redbull, this man will put u to sleep. come everyday, take note and just write whatever he said in class on the test, u'll get an A. as long as u say what he says and never disagree u'll be fine. i got an A- because i missed a couple of days. lol, his comb-over is hilarious!!
I took him for 2 classes. he is easy if you come to class and take down notes. No book in the 1000 class, and one book in the 3000 class. No PAPERS!!. Essay form tests and he gives the topics you need to study the class before the exam. Easy grader on tests, just write everything you know even if it doesn't really answer the question. TAKE HIM!!
Attendance strict, the entire class is him talking, and you taking good notes, 3 tests, no textbook, no papers, no homework, no reading, nothing. Just take notes, study them, and you'll get an A. His class is so boring though but take notes, study, and you should be fine.
dont take him. in all my philo classes i learned atleast one thing here i learned nothing. he just wants u to write wat he says and does not care if you understand it or not. dnt buy the book, there is a copy in the library
This guy the biggest A...... doesn't not how to lecture, botring, and strict. do not take him if you know whats best. its nit about being easy or hard, he just can't teach for s...
awesome prof...no book just attend class and study what he lectures...otherwise easy
GREAT PROFESSOR, HE IS A REAL PHILOSOPHER. If you are not up to listening to philosophy, and thinking to understand, don't take him. I woul strongly recommend him. Easy A. Just study your notes, and understand them. Just a final and a midterm, no book. excellent professor. Definitly take him if you have a chance.
Easy. U just need ur notes, thats it. Carefully listen to him in class and just repeat his lectures on the tests and you will get an A. No textbook, no hw, no papers. Just three tests with about 10 questions. Class can be really boring, but don't fall asleep, u need to listen to him and come to class cuz u only got the notes to rely on for exam
Easy A for smart kids. Not an easy A for dumb kids. You choose which group you belong to. You have to take A LOT of notes in his class, and you have to pay attention to what he says. He has 3 tests during the semester, non-cumulative. His tests are based soley on his lectures and the notes which you take in class. Memorize ALL your notes.
Go to every class. Take notes. For tests, you write down exactly what he said in his lectures and you'll get an A. 3 tests, non cumulative, about 10 questions each. No hw. No papers. Just show up to class, write down as much notes as you can from his lecture, word for word, and spit it all back on the test. EASY A if you can do what I just said.
If you like to listen, take this class. If not, you're gonna fail. No text book. Not interesting BUT he's reallyy nice. He let's you take the test over if you missed it.. he's funny sometimes and his hair is like stuck to his head but other wise he's nice :) Oh, and he has an attendance sheet so if you're not there, have someone sign you in :)
Only three tests. No text, no papers. Just write down whateever he said on his lectures. A lot of writing on tests. Class is ridiculously boring, but an easy A for good note takers and writers.
Great. Just Take notes on everything he says and you will be fine.
If you go to class and take ALOT of notes you'll do fine I guess. Do not take him in the morning or else you'll fall asleep. Really boring. 3 Tests 1 paper.
easy, got an A. didn't even buy textbook. just listen, write down ALL the NOTES, spit it back out on paper. i liked him. no hw really, no readings, 1 paper i think (bs easy as sht) a couple of exams (4 or 5) but really easy if you follow and copy notes.
Very easy, as long as you take excellent notes. Just write down what he says word for word and you'll do fine. 3 tests, no papers, no homework, no textbook. Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. Exams are just questions on the notes, which makes up your grade, so TAKE GOOD NOTES. If you have them- guaranteed A.
Good Professor. Just make sure you take A LOT of notes. He uses a lot of examples too so as long as you write down what he says word for word, including the examples and repeat everything on his tests, you will do great
I'm a psych major so I found this class to be somewhat relevant. My best advice: Grab a recorder and record the classes and fall asleep in the back row after you sign in. I did and got an A+. Just tell him exactly what he told you on the tests.
Ok, he is sort of a decent professor. Most people do crappy on his first test which is mostly what happens. You have to literally copy ALL of his notes to do good on the test. He lectures and hardly writes on the board so I recommend that you type if you are a fast typer or that you audio record his class. His later tests are ok.
I read the reviews and didnt believe they could all be true. I was wrong :(. He's not a TERRIBLE guy, but its SOOOOO BORING. Its so hard to get into it, or even to copy the ntoes to spit it back out. Its ridiculous. One of my worst times at St Johns.
You must take a lot of notes. He also makes you summarize chapters from the text book and hand the summaries in, which is basically pointless. The tests are all based on class lectures which you must memorize to get an A. Its not an easy class but an A is possible.
JUST REMEMBER TO TAKE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS! And memorize them word by word then say the exact same thing on his tests then u will get an A!
this class is absolutely ridiculous. he makes absolutely no sense and you learn nothing about philosophy. the class consists of him philosophizing on things such as desk, squirrel and especially tree. the class is based on all notes and if you do not copy them word by word you will not do well. and everything to him is immaterial
Textbook:On Being Human- Vaske,It was out of print few people gotit and charged to make copies!Prof said "just get it somehow!"2 papers due summ. two chapters in the book.Very slow, boring class.Take good notes, come to every class.I've had 7 PHI courses before, didn't learn anything here. He's arrogant, thinks he's better than any other phi prof! Hard
Hes not that bad of a professor the subject itself isnt that easy but u cant blame that on him! u really do need to show up to every class and bring ur laptop to take notes fast. his tests are exactly what he says in class so its not like hes gonna trick u or anything. 2 tests and a final, and like 3 summarys from the chapters in the book. not hard
He deserves more credit than given. If you pay attention in class and are a good note taker, definitely would recommend taking him. Helped me learn a lot about philosophy. Write down everything said, memorize then spit back out in essay form on test. do not miss class, and if you have to get the notes from a good note taker!
Nice guy, class is alittle boring if you don't like philosophy.he's extremely helpful if you just ask. Show up to class, take good notes, and regurgitate them back on the test and you're guaranteed to do well. Not alot of work at all, all we did was two one page papers summarizing a chapter from the book. Tests are entirely from notes.
You will do great in this class if you take good notes. Good notes are essential to even pass the class. But his voice is very monotone-like and will put you to sleep if you didn't sleep the night befre class!!
He's a really nice man. Uses the textbook extensively so when studying for the test, review the key points straight from the textbook and you'll be fine. He lets you have a bunch of absences
You must be able to keep up with his fast-paced lectures. Take good notes!! It's a must because the exams are all based on his lectures. He knows his stuff and the class was great because it gave me a new perspective on things. He uses simple examples and he often shares cute stories about his life. Work hard and you'll do well. Take NOTES.
What a gentlemen. Great professor. Must take class notes. Test is mostly from class notes. Great professor someone I admire. Great intellectual conversation. Just don't be disrespectful to him and he will always have a great conversation and the utmost respect. GREAT PROFESSOR!!!! I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM BOTH CLASSES, METHA PHYS. & ETHICS.
please don't take him if you want an easy phil. class or if you want to stay awake. his voice is so monotone that you fall asleep even if you get a full night's sleep the night before. you have to write down every single word he says or youll be screwed for the exam. i thought i was a good notetaker, he proved me wrong. save yourself.
borrringggg! talks about NOTHING!
I could care less about that dead reverend father owens that hes constantly talking about. doesnt teach and the entire class is one long session of nonstop babbling about nonsense. draws squares triangles and circles on the board. what the hell?
He babbles about nothing for the entire class time and just draws lines, which eventually turn into awkward arrows. Talks about the subject matter for about 10 minutes TOPS and for the rest of the time practices line drawing and talking about how people that he graduated with are heads of phi departments and hes just a lowly professor. DONT TAKE!!!
Prof. Boyle is a great guy. All that I had to do in the class was pay attention and take notes, then write what was in my notes on the test ans it was an easy A. If you aren't up for paying attention and writing what he says you will not do well. If you can stand to take his notes the class is very clear and you will do more than fine on the exams.
I get up at 6AM every MWF just for this satanic rhetoric?!? talk about inhumanity
Ughhhh! He is beyond boring. He just lectures the entire time. There are a few chapter summaries and a few tests which are ridiculous. BEWARE!
I will have to agree- one of the most boring professors you could ever take. Lectures the entire time, so if youre the kinda person who will fall asleep, DO NOT TAKE him. otherwise he's fine though, he's understanding- I missed a test and he let me make it up at the end. As long as you have notes you'll be fine- he's not a hard grader.
Bring your laptop! Either record or type down his lectures and spit them back on the tests. Easy A. You don't even have to understand it, just repeat it back and he is happy. Tests are 5 or 6 essays, but the hardest questions are the last. He tells you to take your time and be thorough even if you don't finish, so just babble on the first few!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! you seriouslly will regret this decision every day u go to class. oh yeah class, which u start with a prayer. ughh. his lectures are more like monologues so bring a pillow.he is not open to different opinions. btw dont be late/go to the bathroom a lot.he kept track 1 week and told me i cant go so much! lmfao!
Philosophy itself is a hard subject to grasp so don't blame this man. He's actually very good at what he teaches. I got an A in his class. All you have to do is copy what he says, try to understand it (he doesn't expect you to get it 100%), and just put everything he said back on the test booklet.
I took him for philosophy of Ethics and then again for Metaphysics. Philosophy is a boring (and pretty much useless) subject, but he explains it very well. Just write down everything he says, and then repeat it back to him on the test. Three tests per semester and no homework. Definitely take him.
I try to learn and take notes but all this guy does is talk, he jumps around way too much. Does not get the class involved at all. Save yourself get someone else.
He rambles on and on without transition. His "notes" are nothing but arrows on the blackboard. You have to write down whatever comes out of his mouth. His tests are long, but you will get an A if you regurgitate exactly what he said back on the exam. A very boring class, and very hard to pay attention, but you need to if you want an A.
His class is pretty boring, and you have to come to class and take good notes because his tests are based solely on what he says and how he says it. He's understanding though, and if you miss a test and have a good enough excuse, he'll let you retake it.
Its really hard to understand what he says but dont understand it. Just copy it and try to memorize it when you go home. He does grade easily and gave us extra credit opportunities this semster. One paper two raise a letter grade for overall. and another for the third exam. I got an A.
He's a great professor because you really don't have to do anything other than type out the things he says. he allows computers so just type it down and remember it for the exam. he was an easy A
Get an A in this class by sucking up. If you are on his bad side or he doesn't know you, forget about an A. If you are an atheist, do not tell him. If you participate and offer scientific explanation for things, it will not go over well. Textbook is useful for extra credit assignment. Used it once for two hours. Definitely don't buy it, borrow it.
DON'T TAKE HIM! He is so boring and often rants off topic. If you don't bring your computer to this class, you'll probably fall asleep. The tests are all written out and you better make sure you have as many notes as possible to study good. Worst class I've ever taken. I strongly suggest taking somebody else.
Nice, just take down notes. study them. No othe way out.
BEST PROFESSOR AT ST JOHNS TAKE HIM AT LEAST ONCE
idk what everyone is talking about. this guy really opens your eyes to philosophy, his views are very interesting and so are the people's he teaches. he likes hearing opinions and if you have a good class that talks, the class is really intriguing. a whole bunch of notes, bring laptop and type about everything he says.
He is extremely passionate about what he teaches! He is very intelligent on phi. and outside sources- it's amazing. If you have a genuine interest in phi take this course with him. He's clear and likes it when students participate/ ask q's. Literally write down everything he says and you'll be A-ok! Thanks for the great lecutres Dr.Boyle!
This professor has to be the most boring professor on campus. A laptop is a must , but be prepared to take a boat load of notes , and write down everything he says. He teaches like its highschool no cellphones , no talking , just good ole' fashion notes and boredom
TERRIBLE! unless you are an amazing note taker that is willing to memorize every single word he says in lecture do not take! his grading methods are unclear and he require so much from exams.save yourselves!
AVOID ANYWAY YOU CAN He talks all period and switches subjects every 10 seconds making notetaking which is a MUST impossable to make neat. HE IS BORING^123124 the class is more like a theology class then a philosophy one
God Awful. I like to spend the class counting how many times he says being. Makes the time go by faster.
He is unbelievably boring, paying attention is a major challenge. Taking notes is a must but he just rambles on and on. His tests are ridiculous. It's pretty much based on his opinion on Christian metaphysics. If you don't take notes you'll pretty much fail. Textbook has nothing to do with the test
Can't recommend this teacher, at times he seems clever, but at other times he just is dull. He changes his topics non-stop, and he goes on about the details. Don't take him unless you have patience, and a laptop. He is avid about religion, and meta-physics,that half the time what he teaches isn't even philosophy
BORING. Had him for a 7:30 am and struggled to stay awake. All you do is take notes, as he talks and take one mid term and a final. Dropped the class after the mid term. It wasn't hard but it was based on weeks of notes. All questions are open ended.
Really boring, Impossible to know what will be on the exams because he just rambles on all period about random philosophical ideas.
He's a very nice guy and has good intentions with teaching, but it's so hard to understand the points he tries to make in class. To grasp even a little bit of what he talks about you need to really think outside the box. Class isn't organized and he switches subjects abruptly and with no warning. He is REALLY nice, though, and not a hard grader
he talks like yoda.but about metaphysics...star wars isnt that cool..so dont take him unless you want to be really confused.didnt buy the text book.says "being" "essence" and "existence" in every sentence twice. boring boring boring. bring laptop. but pay attention unless you want to fail....its an easy C-B class definitely not an A
Copious (one to two notebooks) notes needed to pass, let alone get an A. Does not lecture so much as voice his own conjecture; does not specify key points. Literally anything said could be on an exam, which necessitates the amount of notes to be taken; without exaggeration, example exam question: "I said x, what did I say after this?" Avoid.
He's a nice man, but his intentions for testing is unrealistic. Final consisted of 10 questions in which you have to awnswer in mini essay form. He wasn't clear on what exactly was on the test, and expects you to memorize every single thing he said. Avoid him if you can, it is definitely NOT an easy A. Even studying for it, I was still confused.
He is a very nice guy but the class is insanely boring. Bringing a laptop to class is a must. Copy down everything he says word for word and just repeat it back to him on the test and you'll do fine.
BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD, EASY A. WHAT A GREAT GUY!!!!!!!
Guy doesn't make any sense. Repeats everything twice. Horrible, extremely boring, every negative experience you can get from a class. Don't take this class.
Do not take this class!!! Lots of notes needed and he just talks his life away and he's boring. Isn't engaging and does not care if no one pays attention.
This class is incredibly boring. Boyle is not a good teacher. He repeats everything, stutters, and makes close to sense at all. Bring a laptop because you will be so bored in this class, surfing the web will become a must. I DO NOT recommend.
He is the most confusing person I have ever come across in my life. He makes no sense and always gets off of the main topic. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Class is boring, tests are hard, and he will probably ruin your gpa.
Rambles on incoherently, repeats himself and stammers class after class. Very unhelpful, unengaging, and the WORST part of it is that he tests on stuff he never mentioned. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
OMG this man is probably the most boring "being". Repeats himself every two seconds, you have to record what he says in order to know what the hell he's talking about. Taking his exams are soooo hard since you have to memorize what he says. When he talks it's like he's learning his damnself. smh DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
A genuinely caring professor. If you read, ask questions, and study you should get an A. The class isn't very engaging though. His lectures can be boring because of the way he speaks. The way he write his notes can be odd if you're not paying attention you might not get it.
Honestly, if you're a good note taker and pay attention to his lectures, you'll get an A. He even offers an extra credit paper summary on two chapters of the textbook, which bumps your grade up a letter. I recommend not to buy the textbook unless you think you'll need the extra credit.. EASY A - take notes, study, & you'll do great.
Literally the most confusing professor ever. You have to take really good notes to pass the class, bring your laptop because he changes topics so quickly in lectures. There are three tests, and you basically have to remember everything to pass them! He does give extra credit which helps. If you take him, just take your notes and study... A lot
very boring class. he talks and talks about philosophy and doesn't seem to have any organization at all. he writes stuff on the board, but that just makes it more confusing. he gives 3 test, and those are all 7 question essay answers, and you have to do every question. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, I WISH I HAD
I was scared to take this class because of all the reviews on here but its honestly not that bad. You just have to take a good set of notes, I just took my computer to class and typed pretty much the entire time and studied those notes for the tests and got solid A's on all of them. He's not as bad as all of these reviews say!
Dont take him.He rambles on about confusing things. He stops and analyzes words and the Latin roots in class.I found that very interesting, but that hardly related to PHI.I think that he is very intelligent but does not know how to relate his words to the class.Several times I would have my hands raised, but he would ignore me. u wont see your tests
learned nothing about philosophy. Kiss up to him and act like you care. Write EVERYTHING he says in your notes. He's looking for "details" so just memorize literally word for word the important stuff he says in class and write it verbatim on the exam. If you take up more than 1 exam booklet, youll probably get an A on each exam.
The most influential and intelligent teacher i ever had. The people who don't like him have no capacity to understand logic and common sense. He is a must for any who wish to expand their understanding of world and life.
He rambles on and on and goes off topic to explain the latin roots of words. His lectures are long and boring. He starts every class with a prayer and is very religious. All his tests are 9 question and all written. The tests are all out of 30 points. I do not recommend this teacher, at all
Terrible professor. Not just because of the long lectures but because he has no level of organization what so ever. He gave us our syllabus a month after classes began and for our first test he used a girls notes to tell us what would be on the test. I truly believe he comes to class with the intent to hear himself talk and not to teach at all.
The ABSOLUTE WORST! avoid at all costs. Confusing material that has nothing to do with philosophy. Ridiculous exam questions. Terribly boring!
Avoid at all costs if you want an easy A. Professor is highly unorganized and often takes pauses mid class to think about his next "lecture". Must take notes and pay attention to each word to spew back on to the exams thus making metaphysics even harder to comprehend.
I took him for Metapysics (which is already a dfficult class to grasp) and he made it even harder to understand. Very nice and if you take notes, don't miss class, & record everything he says you might be okay. He tends to talk to himself during lectures. When taking tests, use all the time he gives, he tends to give you a better grade if you do.
Taking this class is seriously the worst thing I have ever done with my life. Avoid this professor at all costs. You can tell he's a good guy and knows the subject, but he just wasn't meant to teach. I loved Intro to philosophy, but this class ruined philosophy for me :(
Prof Boyle is a difficult grader. His lectures are very deep and he tends to jump from one topic to another. He almost don't interact with class at all and doesn't advise you what will be on exam. I could not recommend taking him.
It is not that bad; he never gives homework and does not expect you to talk or participate. Take notes periodically on whatever he says and zone out for the rest, it does not matter. The grading is just three exams that you have to study a bit, but an A is easily obtainable if you take decent notes.
He's okay. Take the notes and you'll do fine. However, it's a challenge as his lectures are extremely long and boring. If you want an easy A, I recommend you do NOT take this class. Take it if it's only your last option.
He's one of those professors that are super intelligent so sometimes he goes off on things like the door is a door, but its so much more. if you go to class and take notes you will pass. Tests are written, he grades the them more quantity over quality, so just keep repeating yourself! also, NO HOMEWORK- EVER!
All his tests are based on what he talks about in class. He doesn't give any papers out and makes little to no reference to the textbook that I bought for the class. Well, he does write a few words on the board but they generally don't make sense. Like, a single word in the lesson and random arrows pointing to nothing. There are 3 exams in total.
He's not a bad person, but he's a very peculiar teacher. He talks highly existentially, like every sentence is unnecessarily lucid. His lectures are excruciatingly long as well. Take notes on what he says and you should do fine, as it's crucial to the 3 tests that you have in the class as your only grades. I don't recommend him, however.
His lectures are extremely long and they make little to no sense. He goes off and talk about random things and puts nothing on the board. His tests are all short essays. He isn't mean but I would never recommend him to anyone . You will fall asleep in class
His lectures are super long and often went out on tangents that did not connect to the material. He definitely repeats himself (which is good - thats what will be on the test) but you really should pay attention. if you're not a horrible test taker and you are able to just repeat whatever you heard in class (and write a LOOT on tests) then take it
He gives very long monotone lectures and a very tough grader. All his tests are essay type questions. If you can avoid him do it. Also try your best to go to EVERY class because the tests are based on his lectures.
Literally the most annoying monotonous man I've every experienced. He has the weird rule that you're not allowed to go to the rest room whilst in the class. IM PAYING THE TUTION, I WILL GO TO THE BATHROOM. All he does is expand on the textbook, so you probably don't need it. He drifts off into a tangent that makes absolutely NO SENSE!! Worst class!
Seems ignorant of students with different religious backgrounds. If you struggle with understanding catholic religion try to find a different prof. Because he wont help or send you to a tutor. Monotonus and repetitive lectures.
Even though his lectures can be very long and sometimes boring, he really TEACHES something. After his class, my sense of Philosophy and my perception of the world changed. He really is a great and challenging Professor, loved him !
Although his lectures can be long, if you write down everything he says you shall be fine.
Just rants on and on all the time. Brutal to sit through class.
Professor Boyle is not someone you should fear. If you are respectful, pay attention, and really care about your classes, you will do well. He likes when you ask questions and speak up. He will call out students for not paying attention or for being on their phones. Only three tests. No PowerPoint presentations; you must take notes from lectures.
If you are genuinely interested in getting a solid and basic understanding in metaphysics, and actually want to learn something then he is definitely your guy. He does make this super complicated subject a bit easier to understand and interesting. He is a very kind guy if you talk to him outside of class. The class is lecture based, with 3 tests.
He changed my perspective on life. Amazing professor. He's not only a great professor but a great man. There honestly aren't enough characters available to describe the man William Boyle truly is. If you take what he says seriously you will understand exactly what I am talking about.
An overall amazing professor and a holy man. Just a life-changing class. Would definitely take any class with him again.
write alot on the tests he will give you a higher grade even if it's nonsense that sounds right
Dr. Boyle's class is very lecture heavy. You should definitely take notes because the tests are based off of the lectures. There are three tests (essay format) and no homework at all. Don't bother buying the textbook because he never mentioned it again after the first class. As long as you show up to class and take notes you will be fine.
BEWARE! He is very boring. Easy if you take good notes to study for the exams. That is if you can even stay awake. Usually snack to stay awake but no food rule. Talks about how a door is a door and its essence. Made me hate PHI. Grades are based on 3 written exams. Our class somehow skipped over the 2nd one so our grades were based on only 1 exams.
I would only take him if you are truly passionate about Philosophy. He does not write any notes for you and when he does write something on the board its usually because he's thinking out loud. This means that you have to listen to every word he says which is not easy because he speaks in a very monotone voice. It is easy to get lost in the lesson.
boring boring boring, if you take notes in class you will get a decent grade on the test, but thats if you're able to pay attention bc he rambles about random stuff that doesn't make sense.
No course structure, midterm and final that's it. If you're not a believer in God, do not take. Every other word out of his mouth is God talk
Boring, tough to sit through his class. Only have mid term and final, if you can take good notes you'll get an A but he writes gibberish on the board.
The class is not that much to handle overall, but there is only a midterm and a final. Additionally, Boyle tends to get sidetracked often and you just end up writing down every single thing he says, and having to study all of that for the two tests.
Easy concepts, but boring as hell and so hard to pay attention in class. Whole class is basically him thinking aloud and mumbling to himself.
Hello from the other side. My major is philosophy but I have to say that I didnt do well in his class. Yet, no homework, no materials, . Test is base on the note and i have no idea what I'm learning. If you look for good Pro philosophy , let's see Pro. Kennedy.
the class itself is not hard. There is only a midterm and a final. however he mumbles to himself and doesn't do powerpoint or blackboard. He is very old fashioned and does everything on the chalk board. its a bare minimum but can be extremely dreadful. he also hates it when people leave to go to the bathroom and gets upset if you leave.
Professor is nice but he wont even let you use the bathroom if you dont ask and dont you dare leave cause you will get yelled at if you come back his voice is boring and you will regret taking this class everyone falls asleep and his grading is not fair he talks about the same thing every class and expects essays on his exams on different topics
Do not take him. Very old fashioned scribbles on the chalkboard and he repeats the same thing every week. Tests are all essay format. Very low monotone voice confuses himself and talks to the wall. Absolutely avoid at all costs.
There is no homework but he lectures the whole class and wants very little participation. Has a monotone voice that makes it hard to pay attention. His tests are all written with info from your notes. He writes on a blackboard but he never writes the important stuff. Smart but doesn't know how to teach or explain things if you don't understand.
(partly online due to covid-19 pandemic) Professor Boyle is a nice professor and definitely knows what he is talking about, but this class is best for those who thoroughly enjoy philosophy. Most of the class is lectures with a few exams and a midterm/final. He did provide extra credit. If you're ready to work hard for it, an A is possible.
This class is terrible no syllabus to what we should do in this class he mentioned to not get the textbook soo I never bought. I dont know how he taught in person but this man can not teach online. He just posts hour long lectures to blackboard and really doesnt respond to emails either
For this class, it was mostly prerecorded lectures on blackboard. If you take good notes from the lectures you should do fine, but the lectures are repetitive. The midterm had questions and the information came from the lectures. Though emailing could take some time for Dr. Boyle to respond back.
Dr. Boyle is a very kind man and answers emails very efficiently. Due to Covid-19, the class was fully online and was lecture heavy. Only 3 tests, one being the final. All test answers are found in the lectures. However, he is very confusing in his lectures and takes a while to get to his point. If you take notes on the lectures, you will do fine.
By far the worst professor I have ever taken. Drones on to make the lectures an hour and half long, and only tested on about 10 mins worth of the material mentioned in the video. Class consisted of two short answer tests and a short answer final. Gave no grading feedback on the exams. Avoid taking him, unless you are set on P/F to get it over with
I would avoid this class at all costs. His 90-minute lectures are so boring, confusing, and rarely make sense. He gives 3 tests based on these lectures so it is important that you pace yourself in watching them and taking notes. Trying to watch them in one shot will not be good. He has zero personality and a monotone voice. Just don't take!
Strictly prevented people going to the bathroom. Not sure he even knows what he is talking about. Over half the class time is spent with the him retelling stories from his life that have no relation with the lesson including 1. Donald Duck 2. Driving preferences (doesn't like the left lane) 3. Garbage cans 4. Chokeholds 5. Styles of walking
Worst Professor I have ever had, seen, or heard of in my life. Not fit to teach college students. Take any other Professor or wait until next semester.
I would not recommend taking any of his classes. Although he is very versed in philosophy he has a hard time teaching and tends to mumble a lot and doesn't fully explain anything. He is very test heavy and his tests are literally written on paper in cursive. His class is super lecture heavy but again he's horrible at lecturing.
This class was a mess. His teaching was all over the place and hard to follow. Most of the time I had no idea what was going on because it seemed as though he was speaking more to himself than the class. He would lecture for the full class time in a monotone voice. I would not take him again.
This man literally just speaks about nothing the entire class period. There are no PowerPoints, no structured note taking techniques, nothing. You have to try to decipher what he's even talking about while he's in the middle of his tangents. We only had two tests and no homework, but you're going to have to teach yourself the material.
dropped this class on day 1 before it even ended. Don't take it if you dont absolutely have to
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE. All he does is mumble all class. For attendance, he asks the class which side of the classroom received it first. You'll have absolutely no idea whats going on because it is as if he is speaking to himself during his lectures.
Professor Boyle was one of the worst professors I have had at SJU. This class has ZERO homework assignments and your final grade is just based on 3 exams. The only good thing is if you have the textbook you get extra credit. PLZ do yourself a favor, just don't take his class!
he has never opened up his brief case he brings or written on the board. he talks like he has a word limit he has to reach and It is impossible to follow what he is saying. He goes off on tangents about nonsense for 1.5 hours twice a week. genuinely don't get how he is teaching
genuinely the worst teacher I have ever had. Talks for 1.5 hrs straight nothing written on the board and you'll fall asleep 15 minutes into class. no direction in what he is saying and no class participation. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Genuinely horrible. This professor doesn't let students use the bathroom because he decides they are irresponsible. He has stopped lectures to call out students for arriving late or going to the bathroom. He doesn't use Canvas, tests are based on what he says in class, if your notes are not perfect, you're not passing. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Dr. Boyle is an interesting guy, all he does is talk about nonsense to pass his class is to make sure you talk about his nonsense. His class is all over the place, but at least he tells you what is going to be on the exam. He repeats a lot of things and you aren't allowed to leave the class + will call you out. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Great Professor if you ask me. No H.W, just need to pay attention in class and read some(very few) texts and you will get A. He actually made Metaphysics easy for me to understand. Great prof again and would take again. Very easy if you are willing to learn.
I just sat through the most painful college class, and it was our first class. No disrespect, but the man is clearly unfit for the job. All he did the entire class was ramble under his breath while everyone was looking at each other wondering what is going on. Whoever is telling him he is still capable of teaching is just blatantly lying to him.
Sitting in his class for 3 hours a week is torture. He doesn't even teach. He just rambles and mumbles about random stuff while half the class falls asleep. He doesn't stop talking for a hour and a half every class. Nobody in the class knows what's going on. Most people feel bad for him because he is very old and clearly not fit to be a professor.
He talks like he has a word count he has to reach, his monotone voice has half the class asleep and the other half on their phones, I don't even think he understands what he is talking about, the longest hour and a half every Monday and Thursday, he has a very strict bathroom policy too, at least he mostly tells you whats going to be on the exam.
Don't take this guy. There is no HW, no in class assignments, or work in general. He doesn't even use Canvas. He sits and talks for the entirety of each class. There are 2 tests which are difficult. If you decide to take him please just buy the textbook he recommends for extra credit.
Grade is based on only two exams which he is super strict on. Not allowed to use the bathroom. Rambles for the 1.5 hours about absolutely nothing. I was genuinely lost each class. Does not try to engage the class at all. No clue why he is a professor, this is the worst class I've ever taken as a 3rd year but I had no choice.
The guy rambles and talks in circles for 1.5 hours. He doesn't give credit, if you buy the digital version of the textbook. He does not use canvas nor does he assign any homework or assignments to reinforce what is "taught". Lastly he is a slow grader. Semester ended 2 weeks ago and nobody in my section knows our grade, which was based on 2 tests!
Trust the reviews, they are pinpoint accurate
If you can drop the class, drop out of his class! He was terrible can't understand a word and I sat in the 3rd row. Had to cheat to pass.
Dr. Boyle is an extrodinary Human being. Have you ever heard ....."the teacher appears when the student is ready"? If you are seriously interested in the human condition you will cherish all the time spent with him. It's been 25 years and his lectures still resonate with me. His classes are the most impactful of my St. Johns Experience.
